T

here is no end to the launch of new vehicles in the country. That in essence also means that we have to review new vehicles very regularly. In this issue of Motown India, we have reviewed the new Ford EcoSport which comes with an all-new 1.5 litre petrol engine. The company claims that more than 1600

changes have been made to the new model. While a few are subtle, some are quite significant. We particularly liked the new front end of the new Ford EcoSport. The rear of the vehicle is untouched, which again we felt was a wise thing to do for the company. On the two-wheeler front, we have reviewed the new Suzuki Intruder. No, it is not the heavy cruiser that goes by the same name, but it is a new 150cc motorcycle from Suzuki with an engine that is also found in the Suzuki Gixxer. While the bike is quite an agile piece of machine, its shape is a bit on the odd side. With its bulbous front fairing, the bike looks a bit odd in proportion. While it performs rather well on the roads, it does not score big on its style quotient. We have also reviewed the Triumph Street Scrambler, a smart motorcycle from the British manufacturer. In the B2B section, we have a special report on the Mayapuri auto scrap yard in New Delhi. It is Asia’s largest scrap yard and it faces an uncertain future and gets no support whatsoever from the Indian government. We have kept our pages limited and our reports short and interesting!

Finally, after a race that saw some very tough manoeuvres, Lewis Hamilton of Mercedes secured his fourth Formula One win as he came in 9th in the Mexican Grand Prix. The race winner was Red Bull’s young Max Verstappen who recorded his third Grand Prix win. Polesitter Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari managed a 4th position. Hamilton and Vettel came together at the start, crashing their vehicles into each other, which led to to their dropping back. The Ferrari driver recovered to fourth and Hamilton’s 2 points from his 9th standing was good enough to wrap things up with two rounds to go. Vettel needed 16 points to maintain his title hopes, and that meant second place, which was taken away by Valtteri Bottas. Verstappen shared the podium with Mercedes’ Valtteri Bottas (2nd) and Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen (3rd). They were followed by Vettel, Esteban Ocon of Force India, Williams’ Lance Stroll, Sergo Perez of Force India, Haas’s Kevin Magnussen, Hamilton and McLaren’s Fernando Alonso to make up the first ten in the race.. Sahara Force India scored 16 points in the Mexican Grand Prix as the team secured fourth place in the Constructors’ World Championship for a second consecutive year. Max Verstappen’s end of season form continues to go from strength to strength as he took the dominant win in Mexico City. The Dutchman led from the third corner after a dramatic collision involving title rivals Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel. Hamilton suffered a puncture in the smash. With all the drama behind him, Verstappen cruised to the chequered flag in front of Valtteri Bottas and Kimi Räikkönen and added to his previous victories in Spain last year and Malaysia earlier in October. Even though Verstappen dominated the race to score a resounding win, all eyes were inevitably on the two title seekers Vettel and Hamilton as they touched on the opening lap. The story thereafter was not just about the Dutchman’s superb victory but a lot on how Hamilton recovered from last place to win the coveted title.

MOTORSPORT MAHINDRA ADVENTURE - THAR FEST 2017

TORQUE DRIVEN Report: Joshua David Luther

I

t was an incredibly pleasant evening in the city of Kochi when the Mahindra Adventure Club Challenge was flagged off on October 14, 2017. I was invited to the dreamy city in the southern state of Kerala to witness this off road motorsport event. Within minutes of it all beginning a large crowd gathered to watch the carnage fueled by heady doses of torque. To begin with the organisers (Mahindra Adventure) had designed a series of muddy trenches and steep ditches to be navigated by participants which would mark the first leg of the Club Challenge, these were the night stages and they would set the arduous tone of the challenges which lay ahead. As many as 11 teams with their Thar vehicles in multiple categories were competing in the Club Challenge. These contestants came from across the country, some from even as far as the North East. Each team comprised of one pro stock Thar, one modified Thar and one pro-

16 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2017

mod Thar. The tasks looked simple but were much more challenging in reality. The night stages had teams running along a slush pit with deep trenches carved out of the land which were camouflaged with mud and grime. Most teams found it difficult to clear the first of the night stages its self and had to be winched out by their team members. The objective of the club challenge was just that, to assist your team members in clearing obstacles and collecting as many flags as possible along the way. For those who cleared the tricky slush pit in the night stages - the second stage proved to be too challenging to overcome and none of the teams were able to move on to the third and final stage. While most teams were using a winch to tow their stock Thars out of the mud, the NIOC team led by Bijender Singh used a tow strap which proved more efficient than a winch. The second leg of

the night stages involved scaling a steep gradient at a bend and was quite tricky. The day stages as well were no less challenging, some required rolling over logs with their stock Thars. Most of the jeeps got their axles wedged precariously over the logs and need to be towed out. Nearly all of the stages required team members to winch each other out be it over mud, logs or rocks! But the mother of all these was the demolition derby stage. This was the last and final leg of the Club Challenge which required competitors to drive over scrapped buses, trucks, SUVs and cars. The Club Challenge promised an action packed two days of unfiltered torque and testosterone. Most competitors looked muddied and worn out by the end of the day but all with beaming smiles on their faces. All participants and their Thars displayed immense capability but it was a team from the North East - AHOR EJAMSA which won the coveted prize.

ALL-NEW FORD ECOSPORT (AT) PETROL (TITANIUM +)

SPORT(Y) MODE Report: P.Tharyan Photography: Afsar Baig

I

n a country where car buyers are obsessed with engine capacity and sporty performance, the freshly designed new Ford EcoSport with a brand new 1.5 litre petrol engine mated to a six-speed automatic transmission is bound to attract a lot of new buyers. We check out the new Titanium + variant of the EcoSport from Ford India. Incidentally, the new Ford EcoSport comes with close to 1600 new parts. The new Ford EcoSport also comes with an option of a 1.5 litre diesel engine.

EXTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The new Ford EcoSport has been smartly overhauled from the front. The compact SUV now comes with a bold and chunky trapezoidal grille which has been moved up and the blue oval logo of the company sits right at the centre of this grille. Earlier, the logo used to sit right on the tip of the bonnet. From the makers of the iconic Mustang you can always expect a smart job and the new Ford EcoSport is a testimony to that. The new Ford EcoSport has a new set of headlamps with LED Daytime Running Lights (DRLs). The headlamp has projector lenses with the traditional halogen bulbs inside. Maybe down the line, we can expect that to be replaced by the more modern Xenon bulbs. The headlamps are bigger than what was in the outgoing model. The fog lamps too have become bold and big, Apart from the refreshed front, the rest of the vehicle remains same in terms of its design element. Ford India has not tinkered with the rear looks of the vehicle. Many customers may have given a thumbs up to the spare wheel mounted on the

18 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2017

tail gate. The antenna has also been mounted at the rear of the vehicle from its earlier position which was in front. For the Titanium + top end petrol variant that we drove, the company is now offering smart 17 inches alloy wheels. This means better control and a more aggressive stance.

INTERIOR DESIGN AND FEATURES The interiors have been revamped big time in this new Ford EcoSport. The black leather-stitched seats with its white lining make the car look upmarket. The seats, both in the front and rear have become a lot more comfortable with great under thigh support as well as lumbar support. The steering wheel is a lot softer to feel and very sporty in its looks. The plastics and other materials used inside are of good quality. There are oodles of storage spaces in the car. The rear seat now comes with an arm rest that also has space for mugs & small bottles. There are 25 smart stowage spaces. There is space in the glove compartment, space just above that to keep your mobile phone etc, space under the co-passenger seat in front, space inside the front arm rest, space on the door panels with surprisingly deep cavities to store a lot of things, and last but not least, a very ingenious boot space. Ford India calls it adjustable cargo management.

in the Titanium + variant of the new Ford EcoSport, you are kind of impressed by the smart, revamped dashboard. Now we have an 8 inch floating touch screen and a smart instrument cluster. The analog speedometer, tachometer and a couple of other dials have brightly lit needle tips that give the panel an upmarket feel. I was a tad disappointed with the TFT screen in the instrument cluster where the digital information looked a bit hazy. As for the 8 inch touch screen, it is very upmarket, I was impressed by the user-centric interior design of the cabin, especially with the placement of the knobs, controls and the 8 inch screen. The touchscreen, I felt was placed so perfectly to the driver’s line of sight. The centrally located media bin can easily accommodate a big sized smart phone and one can also make use of the two illuminated USB ports. The new Sync 3 infotainment system in the car allows one to control not just the entertainment but even the aircon, the connected smartphone, all with voice commands. The system is also compatible to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Rain sensing wipers and automatic headlamps make up the other exciting features of the all new Ford EcoSport. The vehicle also comes with reverse parking camera. The moment the car starts the

20 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2017

reverse parking camera is activated and you get to see the rear view on the 8inch screen which switches off as the car goes beyond the 15kmph speed. This is a fascinating safety element, besides of course features like the six air bags, ABS, Traction Control, etc.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The all-new Ford EcoSport has got a new petrol engine. It’s a 1.5 litre Ti-VCT engine which is smaller, lighter and more efficient than the previous generation. The 3-cylinder engine produces 121.27hp and a peak torque of 150Nom. The performance is similar to the Ford 1 litre EcoBoost turbocharged engine. Obviously the company felt that a 1 litre tag is not going down too well with customers and hence has put that engine on hold. This new 1.5 litre engine is not turbocharged and is mated to an all-new six-speed automatic transmission. Now that is where all the excitement comes in. With the key fob tucked away, you can start the engine with the press of a button. There is a “D” mode as well as an “S” mode in the vehicle and also paddle shifters, a segment first. In the D mode, I felt the engine was very sluggish on the take, especially when I tried pushing it. But I guess the mode is perfect for those looking for more fuel efficiency. But in the S mode, the vehicle is an entirely different beast. The engine calibration is at its best here as the power delivery gets so linear and powerful as we

step on the accelerator. More importantly, the engine sounds so purposeful that you feel its punchy character. Automatic gear changes are unfortunately not reflected on the tiny TFT screen in the instrument cluster. It’s only when you start using the paddle shifters that you get to see the gear positions on the tiny screen. The winding roads, the long straight stretches and even those odd patches of rugged land did not upset the vehicle. The steering is light initially but as the vehicle gathers speed, you can feel it getting a lot more purposeful. The suspension is a fine balance between the stiff and pliant, which means that even on uneven and rugged surfaces you do not get tossed around like a ship in a storm. Body roll, is minimal and controlled. As for ride and handling, the vehicle comes out as a perfect embodiment of good engineering.

VERDICT The Titanium + petrol Ford EcoSport compact SUV offers a perfect blend of practicality and performance. As for the comfort and ride qualities, it’s at par with some of the cars in the higher segments. The new automatic transmission delivers a brilliant performance as the engine is more than willing to slip into an aggressive mode as you shift the gear from D to S. Paddle shifts allows you to thrash the car around a bit.

he Suzuki Intruder M1800R is a big bulky cruiser that is meant for only for those who can handle a big bike. You also need deep pockets to buy one. The common man is left admiring and ogling at it like Romeo looked at Juliet, perched high on her balcony. This is probably the reason why Suzuki Motorcycles India Private Limited decided to bring the Intruder to the Indian market in a new 150cc avatar.

DESIGN AND STYLE The new Suzuki Intruder is essentially a miniature version of the 1800cc beast. So you get a similar design silhouette. However, the claddings on the sides are bulkier on this bike. You get curvy and smooth flowing lines running from front to back. The big triangular headlamp

upfront adds to the bulky proportions of the bike and it is bound to leave an imposing impression when out on the road. The front head light consists of a large halogen bulb accompanied by an LED projector light. The tail-lamp is full LED. The red stitching on the black seats is appealing. What did not sit too well with me was the plastic quality around the tank and the exposed wiring which could have also been tucked away in a neater manner. While the foot pegs for the pillion are decent, they would have been better if they were slightly longer.

The beefy twin exhaust looks really good and is perhaps the only part of the bike to be treated with some sharp lines. Sadly the muffler doesn’t do much to the sound of the bike as it emits sound similar to other 150cc bikes. I honestly would have preferred a fatter tyre at the rear to fit in with the rest of the proportions but the 17-inch 140/60 tyre that you get is the widest in the segment. The front gets a 100/80 17-inch tyre. The

22 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2017

bike is long and low slung, and gets a decent amount of chrome sprinkled all around. The handlebar is on the flatter side and not a raised one but that does not hinder your riding in any way. The seat height at 740mm is ideal even for short riders. Being a 6-foot tall person, I found the bike comfortable to cruise in but I doubt that people taller than me would share the same opinion. The

instrument cluster is one of my favourite parts of the new Intruder as it is fully digital that displays a whole host of information in a very legible manner. You can keep track of your speed, fuel level, rpm, and there are two trip meters as well. The instrument cluster could have been positioned slightly higher.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE The engine found on the new Intruder has

www.motownindia.com

#SUZUKIINTRUDER150CC

been borrowed from Suzuki’s own Gixxer. So you get the same 155cc 4-stroke, single cylinder, air-cooled engine but it has been tuned to provide a better low and mid range response due to the cruiser nature of the motorcycle. It puts out 13.9hp @ 8000rpm and 14Nm of torque at 6000rpm. The Intruder is definitely quick to accelerate and finds a nice comfortable spot when cruising at 60-70kmph. The engine has been mated to a smooth 5-speed transmission that shifts effortlessly. We were riding the bike through the twisties of Lavasa in Pune so we did not get a proper straight stretch to test exactly when the bike starts to run out of breath. What I did find out was that the bike, despite its cruiser nature, is quite maneuverable. It was able to negotiate some really intricate turns as I went

www.motownindia.com

through various hairpin bends and even when I was trying to navigate my way through some really bad patches of land (more on that later). This bike is going to be great for city riding where slithering through traffic is a common practice. Reaching speeds of 100kmph comes in easy and so does coming to a halt. With standard disc brakes on both wheel and ABS, this bike has been packed to the rafters in the braking department.

potholes that rattled it a bit . Overall, it was a very comfortable ride and thanks to the 170mm ground clearance, I did not bottom out even once. The rear tyre did a great job of giving solid grip as well. The fuel tank can accommodate 11 litres of fuel which is a bit less when you consider how big the tank looks from the outside. It returns a company claimed fuel efficiency of 44kmpl which is decent in this segment, although not the best.

The suspension setup has been borrowed from the Gixxer as well. So you have the same 41mm telescopic forks at the front while a 7-step adjustable mono-shock hidden at the back. As mentioned before, I went over some really bad roads with gravel, loose rocks and potholes. The suspension setup on the Intruder easily absorbed the smaller undulations and it was only the bigger

VERDICT The new Intruder is definitely going to click with enthusiasts who want to own the ‘Intruder brand’. It definitely has a few rough spots but the engine and suspension performance are bound to make you like this bike, especially if you are a city dweller.

nly a few kilometers into the ride I realised the new Triumph Street Scrambler is one extremely versatile bike. The bike gets almost all the right equipment to enable it for the road and beyond.

DESIGN AND FEATURES The Triumph Street Scrambler is a modified version of the Bonneville Street Twin. Aesthetically it looks better carrying forward a rough and macho appeal. Some noticeable additions on the Street Scrambler are the two into two scrambler style exhaust setup, an engine bash plate and beefy Metzeler Tourance tyres. To be described accurately, the Street Scrambler is one part retro, one part modish and one part rugged. It also gets purposeful detailing and minimalistic looks. Taking a closer look one can notice many other more meaningful changes which have been implemented on the Street Scrambler, the first being, a 19 inch front wheel which is bigger than the one on the Street Twin. Additions like machined foot pegs and brake lever don’t just add to the rough road look of the bike but also improves grip while riding off road. Triumph has also added an interchangeable pillion seat and aluminum rear rack to improve the utility aspect of the motorcycle. Other changes which have been incorporated to improve the ride are wider handlebars. Triumph has also improved the suspension

www.motownindia.com

setup on the bike. The Street Scrambler gets KYB 41mm forks in the front with 120mm of travel and KYB twin shocks in the rear with 120mm of travel. Rider seat height on the Street Scrambler is also higher than the Street Twin. The rider seat is 40mm higher, set at 790mm but that does not hinder the riding comfort too much and will still be quite accessible for the average rider. In terms of kit the Street Scrambler has also been equipped with Ride-by-Wire and a torque assist clutch.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE Powering the Street Scrambler is the same 900cc twin cylinder engine which does its duty on the Street Twin and the Bonneville T100. The parallel twin motor is not in the same state of tune as the Street Twin. Peak torque of 78.84Nm comes in quicker at 3050rpm while peak power of 54bhp comes in a tad bit later at 6000rpm. These simple changes do not dilute the pure motorcycling pleasure derived from the British twin cylinder motor. The Street Scrambler may not be the quickest of the lot but it definitely gets enough muscle to keep you coming back for more. On road the Street Scrambler is quite well mannered and Triumph has added the right kit to ensure unfiltered performance. The bike gets switchable ABS and switchable traction control which can be turned off to enjoy this motorcycle’s abilities off the beaten path. The engine has been mated to a 5-speed gearbox. Shifts are quite crisp and the engine goes through the first two gears pretty

NOVEMBER 2017 | MOTOWN INDIA | 25

WHEELZ & ROADZ A riding experience quickly. The third, fourth and fifth are marginally taller and revving up on highways truly feels liberating to the soul. What makes things more pleasurable is the meaty grunt from the exhaust. The Metzeler Tourance tyres on the Street Scrambler come with a block pattern, the ride on tarmac is quite smooth and sure footed but the real fun begins off road. Take the Scrambler down a beaten path and the 120mm of travel in both suspensions and the larger 19inch wheel upfront will make the world of difference. Not to forget also is the grip provided by the tyres in slushy situations. The machined foot pegs do well in helping you keep a good hold over the motorcycle and the ground clearance is enough to clear most obstacles. While riding off road the underbody bash plate is definitely a handy addition and can save you in some sticky situations. The suspension travel also proves handy while riding over bad roads and the tuning is just right to ensure you get adequate control. On tar, the ABS and traction control combined with a well engineered disc brake setup ensures adequate safety for the rider. The braking is progressive and lacks no bite keeping the rider is always in control. Speaking of control, the rider also gets taller and wider handlebars which are a boon while riding off road and also improve the riding posture while on tarmac. Triumph has managed to keep the weight of the Street Scrambler restricted to 206kgs which translates into a breezy ride.

VERDICT The Triumph Street Scrambler is an immensely capable motorcycle which is not just easy to ride on tarmac but also on some jungle trails. The only hiccup we had with bike was mild heat emanating from the silencer which sits right under your thigh.

ero Glamour is not a new name in the Indian two-wheeler market. It has been there for years now and through all these years it has been known as a commuter bike that has looks from a segment above. The year 2017 witnessed a new avatar of this 125cc bike and we got our eyes and hands on it to see if the bike can still justify its name.

We had the Black with Sporty Red colour variant and it looked quite bold. The new Glamour looks best from the side where you can really see the

#HEROGLAMOUR rising design of the bike. I was not so impressed by the front though as it looked a bit too simple to me. The rear of the bike, however, looks great, thanks to the stunning LED taillamp that looks even better at night. The instrument cluster also has a contemporary design with an analogue dial for showing your current speed and a digital display to show you things like your fuel level, average fuel consumption and trip meter.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE What sets this new Glamour apart is the Fuel Injection system it gets. Hero calls it the ‘Programmed FI’ as it pumps in fuel based on the data it gets from the sensors. This in turn not only provides for a better fuel efficiency but also makes the throttle response pleasing. You will notice the significant increase in power, the moment you accelerate. While the climb in speed is linear it does happen rather quickly and makes overtaking in city traffic, a breeze. The 124.7cc single cylinder, 4-stroke engine now produces 11.5hp @ 7,500rpm and 11Nm of torque at 6,500rpm. Another thing to like about the new Glamour is the 4-speed transmission. Initially I was a bit skeptical about just having 4 gears to play with, especially considering how some of the competition such as the Honda CB Shine SP and the Bajaj Discover 125, have their engines mated to 5-speed transmissions. However, I was quite satisfied with the transmission on the Glamour. Not only does it feel adequate for city and even highway usage, shifting the gears is smooth as well. It was just the first gear that I felt gets out of breath a little too soon but the rest of the gears provide you with ample room to cruise and have a great time on the bike.

the Glamour. They added a great set of suspensions that do well when pitted against the bad and broken city roads we are so used to encountering in our daily commute. I took it over some speed breakers as well and thanks to the 159mm ground clearance, the bike went over them without the frame coming in contact with the ground. Going fast is only one half of the job for a vehicle, stopping is equally important. There is a 240mm disc in the front and a 130mm drum brake in the rear that give you ample confidence whenever you pull the brakes. The wider 90/90 18 inch rear tubeless tyres lend a good control over the bike when taking corners and going over sandy terrains. The front gets 80/100 18 inch tubeless tyres. The riding position is pretty comfortable too and the seat is long enough for two people.

VERDICT The new Hero Glamour is a great bike that does all that you would expect from a 125cc commuter bike and it also adds a few intelligent things in the mix. The Programmed FI definitely makes the bike ride better than the carbureted version and the looks are nothing less than glamorous. It is very functional too and gets a long seat, soft suspension and smooth gearing. Where it loses out some points is in terms of the cost. This fuel injected variant comes with a price tag of Rs 69,845 (ex-showroom Delhi) which brings it dangerously close to some 150 and 160cc bikes.

ost people would refuse to make the switch from an Internal Combustion (IC) engine powered vehicle to an electric vehicle simply because of poor range, lack of charging infrastructure and sluggish speed. But the Okinawa Ridge can change your impression on the crucial fronts of range and speed. We take a closer look.

ENGINE AND PERFORMANCE

DESIGN AND FEATURES

On offer are Eco and Sport riding modes. In Eco the speed has been limited to 35kmph. The Sport mode allows the rider to tap into the full potential of the motor enabling it to reach a maximum speed of 55kmph. In Eco mode the throttle response is slow and sluggish. The Sport mode feels more active and alive. With just a small twist of the throttle the Ridge gets going and that too pretty quickly. In Sport mode it does not take the scooter too long to attain its top speed of 55kmph. But that figure may not be sustained for too long and a noticeable drop in performance can be seen with a drop in the level of charge.

At first glance, the Okinawa Ridge design is futuristic and the looks are voguish. The fascia sports a large headlamp which casts a decent beam and gives this electric scooter the smart looks similar to the Honda Dio. The bikini fairing houses turn indicators which also add a touch of attitude to the scooter. The stance of the scooter is stylish and smooth flowing lines give the Ridge a very peppy appeal. In terms of dimensions, the Ridge is nearly as large as conventional scooters. The quality of materials used in the construction is surprisingly good and can infact be considered a benchmark for electric scooters in India. Speaking of quality even the build and fit of the scooter is remarkable. The switch gear as well is above average and does not leave an impression of cost cutting. Adding appeal to a stylish stance are alloy wheels wrapped in tubeless tyres. The scooter gets a digital instrument cluster that displays level of charge in the battery, speed, odometer and time. The Okinawa ridge has also been equipped with a key fob that gets an anti-theft feature. It can also be used to remote start the scooter. The scooter also features a broad saddle which we found more comfortable than most other scooters we have ridden so far. Also on offer is a back rest for the pillion rider. The company has catered to adequate storage space on the scooter. The under seat storage is decent. It houses a rather large charging unit. The space left is adequate to fit in a half face helmet. The footboard up front is roomy and reasonably broad.

www.motownindia.com

Powering the Ridge is an 800W electric motor propelled by a 60V VRLA battery. While the company claims a top speed of 55kmph for the Ridge scooter, this may vary depending on the level of charge in the scooter and of course the weight of the rider, riding mode and style of riding. The range as well has been claimed at 80-90kms.

While the woes of refueling may be put to rest, one does need to constantly keep an eye out for the level of charge left in the led acid batteries. This is where I faced a problem. The level of charge is not always accurately indicated in the instrument cluster. But our estimate is that if you are riding all through in Sport mode the Ridge can do a total of 50-60kms. The overall performance of the scooter is complimented by good brakes and a neatly tuned suspension which provides adequate cushioning on mildly rough roads but is easily rattled by larger bumps and potholes. The scooter handles well in and around traffic, it feels surefooted and light and that adds to the fun of riding this around town.

VERDICT The Okinawa Ridge scooter is quick and if your daily travels are around the 50-60kms mark then this is probably the most convenient and economical option around.

ALL-NEW LAND ROVER DISCOVERY

A maverick at heart Report & Photography: P.Tharyan

W

hether it is day or night, traffic is a nightmare in a city like Mumbai or as a matter of fact anywhere in the world. But when you are taken to a place, away from the madding crowd and incessant traffic and given a splendid set of wheels to experience, it’s like an elixir that sets your mood right. You come alive to a new world and a new experience. At Land Rover, an experience is never as ordinary or predictable as a Monday morning. It’s different, it’s ingenuous and it’s extremely proven. Jaguar Land Rover India launched the Land Rover all-new Discovery at the SRPF Ground in Goregaon East in Mumbai which was followed by an experience drive in a cordoned off area. The vehicle was launched in the presence of Rohit Suri, President and Managing Director, Jaguar Land Rover India Ltd. (JLRIL), and Mark Turner, Brand Director, Overseas Region, Jaguar Land Rover. But unlike a boring press conference that usually follows a vehicle launch, journalists were made to experience the new set of Land Rover wheels, driven by trained instructors, in an area with several

precariously steep and tough hurdles. Overseeing the drive experience was Ashish Gupta, Founder of Cougar Motorsport and a qualified and trained instructor of Land Rover vehicles. While the capabilities of the vehicle are immense, it’s equally important to know how to handle the vehicle through the various obstacles. And that requires skills of gigantic proportions. Realistically speaking, with the right set of skills one can manoeuvre the car through all kinds of climbs and descents, through deep water, sand, snow and mud. For the first time on the Discovery, Terrain Response 2 is available as an option (standard on the First Edition) that automatically selects driving modes to achieve the best possible chassis and powertrain setup for various conditions. Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and Gradient Release Control are also on offer with the All-New Discovery to enhance driver control in trying conditions. Permanent four-wheel

drive comes with a choice of two intelligent systems; a single speed transfer box for optimal on-road conditions or a two-speed box for challenging conditions. The vehicle’s off-road geometry is class leading. We got to experience that as the new Discovery was carefully and skilfully driven by the experts. A best-in-class approach angle (34°), ramp angle (27.5°) and departure angle (30°) enable negotiation of the toughest of obstacles. All Terrain Progress Control (ATPC) which is a state-of-the-art system enhances control over challenging surfaces while launch Control enables smooth pull-away on surfaces like wet grass, ice and sand and maintains a constant speed between 1.8 km/h and 30 km/h. Land Rover announced the launch of the 5th generation Discovery in India with prices starting from Rs 71.38 Lakh (ex-showroom). This versatile SUV will be available in two powertrain options, the 3.0 litre diesel delivering 254.79hp and a 3.0 litre petrol delivering 335. 26hp.

OFF ROAD ACTION IN A PORSCHE CAYENNE Report: Joshua David Luther, Photography: Neeraj Panwar

hen you hear the name Porsche the first thought that crosses your mind would probably be a cute looking red coloured roadster with an exhaust note that terrifies other motorists. Well you are not too far from the truth. Porsche undeniably makes some of the best looking and even better handling sports and super cars in the world but they also make SUVs! And while the world knows all too well the capabilities of their sports cars, little can be assumed about their SUVs. Well I had the opportunity to clear the air in this regard. I was going to get some off-road action in a Porsche Cayenne which on road in India would be somewhere north of Rs. 1 crore. To begin with let me throw some figures your way. The Porsche Cayenne that I was driving gets a 3.0 litre, V6 diesel mill which belts out a neat 245bhp from 3800-

36 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2017

4400rpm and turns a beefy 550Nm of torque from 1750-2750rpm. The engine comes with an AWD (All Wheel Drive) and has been mated to an 8-speed automatic gearbox. On road this mammoth SUV can attain a top speed of around 220kmph and goes from 0-100kmph in approximately 7.3 seconds. Well now that you have been informed of its capabilities on paper let’s talk a little more about how it fared. We halted right before the adventure trail and were asked to put the SUV in lift mode. For those of you who don’t know the Cayenne comes with two levels of lift. I selected level two just be extra careful. The second task was to switch to off road mode. This is also where all the various electronic driver assistance programmes would automatically kick in at the right time. Surly enough the driver aides came to my rescue without me having to do much at the first obstacle itself. I was rolling over a steep curved climb when the SUV infront of me stopped in the middle of the climb. The vehicles hill hold

function kicked in and I had to just wait for the driver infront to clear the track. With the hill hold in place I gently accelerated and the 550Nm of torque ensured a smooth climb up. Going further on the adventure trail we covered multiple steep climbs and drops, axle twisters and articulation angles. Surprisingly I was not even breaking a sweat sitting comfy in the plush interiors of the Cayenne. As we rolled along, it hit me that I am doing all of this in an SUV which costs more than a crore! Well to be honest it was not the trail then but that very fact that made me sweat a wee bit. Through loose sand and mud, over rocks and pebbles the Porsche Cayenne rolled gracefully. A must mention is that all of this was being done with road tyres which is mighty impressive. We further moved on to a man made off road test track. The track gave us a chance to check out the Cayenne’s capability over various obstacles like chicken holes, rumble strips, an acceleration and braking zone, articulation pits and climbs, steep gradients and slush pits. This was where I could quite accurately gauge just how capable the Porsche Cayenne was. All of it seemed so graceful and effortless as this SUV just breezed through the course in a matter of minutes. Well some credit also goes to your truly for driving decently well. At the end of the day I was quite happy as I concluded this not to be an overpriced and incapable SUV but truly competent of taking on some moderate trails. To be accurate about its competence I shall end by saying this “all you need worry about is the throttle inputs and the direction you are pointing it in.”

Lamborghini goes nostalgic with its first SUV, the LM002

wenty-five years after the legendary LM002 ceased production, Automobili Lamborghini will launch the Urus on December 4, 2017 in Sant’Agata Bolognese, again creating a new class of Super SUVs. In advance of the Urus world premier Automobili Lamborghini looks back on its SUV legacy in order to recall an extraordinary automobile. The black LM002 (chassis #12231) from the Lamborghini museum, entirely-restored by the classic department Lamborghini Polo Storico represents Lamborghini’s original SUV creation: the LM002 is widely considered as the father of luxury SUVs. Turning heads in sophisticated city streets,

the LM002 was equally at home in dirt, gravel and snow.

The LM 002’s development started as a project to develop a high performance off-road vehicle for military use at the end of the 1970s, with the name of Cheetah. B2B SPECIAL REPORT

MAYAPURI: ASIA’S LARGEST AUTO SCRAP YARD Report: Motown India Bureau

M

ayapuri in India’s capital city of New Delhi is Asia’s largest auto scrap yard. Here in Mayapuri area, in the filthy, run down sheds, old, discarded and accidental vehicles are either stripped to their bones and sold as scrap or their innards or working parts are salvaged and sold in the resale market. Believe it or not, India does not have a single automated shredding facility in the country. As for a scrappage policy, despite the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers (SIAM) desperately wanting the government to introduce one, there is none in place. So who are these people at Mayapuri and what do they do for a living? People working here claim that it is Asia’s largest scrap yard for old vehicles and other metal and plastic products. “There are close to 1,500 to 1,600 spare parts dealers here who have thousands of employees and hundreds of thousands of daily wage labourers here,” says Narender Singh Chawla, owner of ABCD, an auto, bike and car dealer. Most of the shopkeepers refrain from calling themselves scrap dealers, rather they want to be known as auto spare parts dealers. Scrap dealing in general is regarded as a menial job and hence nobody in Mayapuri wants to be known by that term. Many of the dealers have amassed considerable wealth trading in scrap and auto parts. “I have an experience of 40 years in this industry which has been running here in this place for the past 70 years. For 30 years it was being run at Motia Khan and for 40 years it has been here in Mayapuri. The future of this business is quite uncertain. There are multinationals coming in to do this very same work which we are doing. It is not clear as to what will happen to all of us who have been toiling here. The government has not made any clear

policy for us,” says a worried Chawla. India today has more than 7 lakh cars and over 4 lakh trucks and buses which have reached end-of-life stage. This means that the Indian market has a huge potential for auto-shredding. Recently, Union Steel Minister Chaudhary Birender Singh had noted that by 2025, around 28 lakh cars and 12 lakh trucks and buses will reach their end-of-life stage. Last year, Mahindra Intertrade Ltd., a part of the Mahindra Partners Division of Mahindra Group, and MSTC Ltd. (a Government of India enterprise) had signed a formal joint venture agreement to set-up India’s first-of-its-kind greenfield auto shredding and recycling capability. This auto shredding facility is likely to come up sometime in 2018. This first-of-its-kind in India auto shredding facility will establish an Integrated Automotive Recycling capability for end of life vehicles - from collection, compaction, transportation, depollution, dismantling, shredding, recycling, and disposal. India imports around 6 million tonnes of scrap steel every year and is the second largest importer of scrap after Turkey. By 2025, the Minister had informed that India will be able to generate 7.5 million tonnes of scrap every year. But with big multinationals announcing their plans to get into auto shredding, the scrap dealers of Mayapuri are a worried lot. “We have abided by the Modi government’s ‘Swacch Bharat Abhiyan’. There are many cars which are lying abandoned in the streets of Delhi. We bring them here and dispose them as scrap. We are creating jobs and employment opportunities for the people. What is to happen to these people in the coming times is what troubles me,” says Chawla. Chawla claims that he has information that the Tata Group is exploring setting up an auto

B2B SPECIAL REPORT ““I have an experience of 40 years in this industry which has been running here in this place for the past 70 years. For 30 years it was being run at Motia Khan and for 40 years it has been here in Mayapuri. The future of this business is quite uncertain. There are multinationals coming in to do this very same work which we are doing. It is not clear as to what will happen to all of us who have been toiling here. The government has not made any clear policy for us,”

- NARENDER SINGH CHAWLA shredding facility. He says that Tata officials often visit Mayapuri to find out how vehicles are being scrapped here. He is also aware of Mahindra’s plans to set up an auto shredding plant. “If multinationals and corporate companies come into this business then what will happen to us. The government has not made any policy for us. We have been working in this field for 70 years. I am worried about our future,” he says. A walk through the labyrinths of Mayapuri will shock an outsider by the manner in which the old vehicles are dismantled and stripped. A four-wheeled vehicle can be stripped of its innards in a matter of 25 minutes. The good parts are put aside for resale. They can include anything from a distributor coil, an engine part or even a laminated window glass or windshield. Whatever can be reused

48 | MOTOWN INDIA | NOVEMBER 2017

definitely has immense resale value. Buyers for good auto parts come from not only all over the country but even from abroad. Any good automobile part has a resale value. For example, Chawla explained, a motorcycle handle in good condition can be fitted on to an e-rickshaw. Scooter tyres can be used as tyres for an ice-cream cart. Aluminium, copper and steel scrap are sold to scrap dealers at the prevailing rates. But all the frenetic activity at Mayapuri has left the entire area in a total mess, something that could make a body like the National Green Tribunal breathe fire! Chawla points out that the Delhi Development Authority had allotted space for all the shops to be set up in Mayapuri. “The work we are doing here is valid because of the allotment from DDA and this is automatically a license for us to carry out

this scrapping work here in Mayapuri. DDA gave us these allotments to set up shops to scrap old vehicles. If the government wants to shift us from here we request them to give us space where we can crush these vehicles. We request the government not to sideline us but create a policy for us as well which will benefit our generations to come and ensure the safety of their future,” pleads Chawla. Now it is for the Government to take up the cause of people like Chawla. The government, if it wants, can retrain the people working here, set new standards for scrapping old and discarded vehicles, ensure that the hundreds of thousands of people working here continue to remain employed and most important, make sure that the environment is kept safe and clean. The other option for the government is to throw the baby out with the bathwater!
