“It was a pleasure to have Tom with us in Turkey and certainly proved to us why he was so worthy of winning our inaugural RX Talent Search”

general news The initiative was a joint venture between the Motor Sports Association (MSA), IMG (promoter of the FIA World Rallycross Championship) and FirstCorner (the company behind RX Lites). On his maiden competitive rallycross outing the 28-year-old won a heat before finishing third in the final, behind Swedish drivers Kevin Hansen Jr and Thomas Bryntesson. “What a ride!” said Onslow-Cole. “For my debut weekend, it couldn’t have gone much better. It’s so different to GT racing but I think some of my BTCC skills came in handy. I’d like to thank the MSA, the World RX Championship, RX Lites, Olsbergs MSE and Rockstar Energy Drinks for making this weekend happen. If I have it my way, I’ll be back soon.” Paul Bellamy, MD or World RX, added: “It was a pleasure to have Tom with us in Turkey and certainly proved to us why he was so worthy of winning our inaugural RX Talent Search. It can be difficult for some drivers to adapt to the challenges of rallycross but Tom did a sterling job and proved he is a natural talent with a mature head on his shoulders.”

MSA NEWS | OCTOBER 2015

Evans kick-starts preparations for ‘best ever’ WRGB Fresh from second place in Corsica, FIA World Rally Championship (WRC) star Elfyn Evans returned to home soil in north Wales yesterday (8 October) as the star attraction at a special Wales Rally GB preview. Evans joined a cast of fellow rallying luminaries and local dignitaries at a busy Llyn Brenig Visitor Centre on Denbigh Moor. The setting overlooked Brenig reservoir, which will host Wales Rally GB’s Power Stage. “We’ve been working hard behindthe-scenes and there’s a real feeling that everything is beginning to come together now,” said Evans, 26. “Hopefully we can capitalise upon that at Wales Rally GB and continue what has been an amazing run of form for Welsh sport recently.

“It’s an absolutely fantastic event and I’m really looking forward to competing so close to home. I genuinely believe we have some of the very best stages in the world. Obviously I want to enjoy the event, but we’ll also be pushing for the best result possible and the podium is definitely the goal.” Evans was joined at Llyn Brenig, by Hyundai pairing Kevin Abbring and Seb Marshall, and promising young Welsh talents Osian Pryce and Tom Cave. Others present included

legendary former co-driver Phil Mills, multiple downhill mountain bike racing world champion Gee Atherton and VIPs from event partners Hyundai Motor UK, Network Q and GreenThumb. Underlining the significance of the event to the local economy, Ken Skates AM – Welsh Government Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism – was a prominent attendee, enjoying a blast through the forest alongside Evans in his Ford Fiesta RS WRC.

M-Sport to host next BRC open day The next open day for those interested in being part of next year’s revived MSA British Rally Championship will take place at M-Sport in Cumbria on 13 October. M-Sport will allow prospective teams and competitors to use the test stage at its Cockermouth facility. Championship officials will also be on hand to introduce the new-look BRC and field any questions. For more information, email brc@msaevents.co.uk or tweet @MSA_BRC.

Next month’s Wales Rally GB (12-15 November) will be the focal point for a number of initiatives aimed at inspiring the nation’s ambitious young talent. More than 1500 local students are expected to visit the ‘Big Bang’ Industry Awareness STEM Event in the Deeside Service Park. The marquee will host 36 companies from Airbus to JCB, plus a large exhibition area featuring the Bloodhound Supersonic Car, simulators, wheel-changing competitions and a host of other attractions. Deputy Minister for Culture, Sport and Tourism, Ken Skates, said: “This event is a fantastic way of engaging young people with Wales Rally GB. Getting young people involved through exciting, hands-on activities is one of the best ways to show them the relevance and importance of STEM subjects.” Students will also be treated to guided tours of Toyota’s neighbouring Engine Plant and the Service Park, and there will be two design competitions organised by the Engineering Education Scheme Wales (EESW) on behalf of the Welsh Government.

Clearing a safe area for spectators Clocaenog East Shakedown stage

Preparing Welsh forests for Wales Rally GB Many of the most legendary forest roads of Wales are managed by Natural Resources Wales (NRW). Two-hundred-and-eighty-two kilometres out of a total of 310 are looked after by the environmental body for Wales, a total of 91 per cent of the entire rally route. The woodlands NRW manages are vitally important for people, the environment and the economy of Wales. This beautiful backdrop is an epic setting for world famous rally teams to compete at the highest level but they are also used for mountain biking, outdoor learning, walking and much more. This means that planning for such an event is really important. It begins by reviewing the proposed route and programme dates before granting permission for Wales Rally GB to use the land. While hopeful competitors are submitting their entries for a chance to compete, NRW teams are already thoroughly checking the route for obstructions and clearing away any undergrowth. This is to secure the best and safest viewing points which

are identified by the rally organisers for spectators to watch their favourite driver speed past. Welsh forests are home to an amazing variety of plants and animals so this work needs to be sympathetic to the natural environment. And these areas are also vitally important for the commercial timber industry in Wales with around 850,000 tonnes of timber sourced from these forests each year. So before the rally arrives NRW must prepare for the event by closing all harvesting and haulage on the rally route for 1 week before the rally begins. Their customers, contractors and teams work together to make sure that timber equipment is removed and the sites are clear for the event. The rally roads themselves are arguably one of the most important aspects of the event for the competitors. As each navigator is memorising the rally route

and preparing their route notes, NRW’s Civil Engineering team will have driven the whole route several times to check for pot holes and defects. Grading machines are brought in to mend any damage and prepare the surface for the high speed action. Preparation work on the rally roads begins in early September and continues right up until November, followed by restoration works starting immediately after the rally. When November arrives the final route inspections are completed and NRW gives access for the rally organisers to set up advertising banners and communication points. NRW is ready once again to host the world’s most famous rally drivers and navigators as they descend upon Wales. Enjoy your time in Wales, but please do so safely and responsibly.

Spinal Track team ready for Race of Remembrance A team of four disabled racers is among the entries for the second Race of Remembrance at Anglesey (6-8 November) in support of Mission Motorsport. Last year’s inaugural event generated a £13,000 profit, which Mission Motorsport directed into its City & Guilds project; the charity is now an accredited provider of vehicle-related courses preparing and developing the Armed Forces’ WIS (wounded, injured & sick) list. Organiser Jon Earp said: “The Race of Remembrance was originally a way of raising our profile as a charity and to demonstrate the sheer determination of our Mission Motorsport beneficiaries. What the event has become is a conduit for those

from different walks of life but with similar stories and challenges, a celebration of the moniker ‘anything is possible’, and an opportunity for disability to compete on an even field against the able-bodied.” The 1000km event has attracted a capacity grid of 45 teams. As per last year, the racing will pause at 11am on the Sunday for a remembrance service.

MSA NEWS | OCTOBER 2015

The MSA’s Environmental Award was created in 2011 to recognise truly exceptional or outstanding contributions towards environmental responsibility and the active promotion of sustainability within motor sport activities, events and communications. In 2012 The Rt Hon the Lord Drayson became the inaugural recipient for Drayson Racing Technologies’ excellent B12/69EV electrical prototype racer. The following year Williams Hybrid Power won this award for its ingenious flywheel energy recovery systems. These winners have been engraved on MSA’s stunning new trophy which has just been made to honour this prestigious award. The trophy will not necessarily be presented annually and will only be awarded if a truly exceptional or outstanding nomination is received. The solid Silver and Malachite trophy pictured with its English Burr Walnut case is an MSA Board award for which an exhaustive selection process for its production was undertaken throughout the UK. The winning design was submitted and subsequently executed by Helen M London, an inspiring young artist specialising in Sterling Silver work (www.helenlondon.co.uk). Helen has been working as a silversmith for ten years, having graduated from her degree course in 2005. In 2006 she became self-employed and jumped at the opportunity to design and create this trophy for the MSA. This large scale project was a perfect next challenge for Helen. She was drawn to the engineering aspect required but feels that her greatest achievement is how her elegant design conceals the complexities of the handmade construction. “From start to finish”, she said, “the project took me nearly a year to complete. Each piece of the trophy had to be made

14

separately and could only be fitted together in the last few days of construction. So it was a really lovely moment finally to put all the pieces together and see my design depicting a ‘Cradled World’ come to life before my eyes.” The English Burr Walnut case was hand produced by award winning designer/maker John Jacques from Radiance Furniture Design (www.radiancefurniture.co.uk). John creates beautiful, original fine furniture from his studio workshop in Wiltshire. His work combines functionality and innovation, with each piece designed and crafted to the highest quality. John said, ‘It was really good to be involved in the process to create the case for MSA’s Environmental Award, and great to collaborate with Helen on this exciting project.’ James P Hollins was appointed by MSA to oversee production as he is an expert in period antiques with a wide knowledge of precious objets d’art and production techniques. “I was really delighted to lead this project for the MSA and to achieve such an outstanding result. Helen and John are very talented and I expect to see further great things from them both”, he said. The MSA welcomes nominations for this award until mid-October each year and the 2015 deadline is set for Friday, 16 October. The award process and nomination form - plus those for other MSA awards - can be found on the MSA website at msauk.org/awards.

Under 17 Motor Club The Under 17 Motor Club raised over £1200 for North West Air Ambulance in recent months by running Production Car Autotests at North West car shows.

Machars Car Club

The latest event, the Footman James Classic Car Show, saw 26 drivers give over 100 passenger rides. Each day provided three hours of live action to fill with a PCA event, and the commentators promoted the fact that for just £30 those watching could drive their own car at similar events.

Members of Machars Car Club added Go Motorsport stickers to their cars and lined up for a photo at a club Autotest last month. Founded in 1950, Machars Car Club caters for a wide variety of motor sport, and is involved in the organisation of Autotests, 4x4 trials, stage rallies and sprints. Members can be found competing in all areas of the sport as well as in non-competitive roles such as marshalling, timekeeping and scrutineering. Visit www.macharscarclub.co.uk to find out more.

Airedale and Pennine Motor Car Club Airedale and Pennine Motor Car Club gave Harewood Hillclimb (19-20 September) spectators a taste of club motor sport by running an autotest, which also raised money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance. Club members could take part in four timed tests over the weekend, while also providing passenger rides for a modest contribution to the air ambulance. As well as raising just over £100, the club welcomed eight new members. The club thanked Go Motorsport, Harewood Hillclimb, Keighley Motor Club all who contributed to Yorkshire Air Ambulance.

Drivers from Accrington Motor Sport Club, Bolton le Moors Car Club, CSMAclub NW MSG, Knutsford and District Motor Club and organisers and drivers from the Under 17 Motor Club all helped in this great promotion for motorsport in the North West. Steve Johnson, Go Motorsport North West RDO, would like to thank all the PCA competitors and marshals from local motor clubs for their help in running Go Motorsport Live in the North West.

Liverpool Motor Club Liverpool Motor Club rounded off a busy month by looking after the on-track action in Greenpower’s North West heats at Aintree Circuit (23 September). The Greenpower Trust is a charitable organisation that promotes engineering as a rewarding career. Students have to design, build and race small lightweight electrically powered cars, or their school can buy a kit car to develop. There were three races at Aintree, catering for different age groups. Greenpower’s Jeremy Way, a successful competitor, said: “Liverpool Motor Club play a significant part in setting up and operating the event, and

yet again proved invaluable in creating the 2015 event so we extend our sincere thanks to their Chairman and members for their generous support. “Please help us spread the word that this country needs engineers to secure the future of British industry. If you have connections with a school or college that might be interested in competing in Greenpower events in 2016, please tell us!”

Cadet minimum driver weight As published last month, there will be a minimum driver weight in the Cadet class with effect from 1 January 2016.This minimum driver weight will be 27kg and is the weight of the driver with only mandatory items of PPE (i.e. no rib protector etc.) as per MSA Regulation (U)17.29.6. The kart community is also reminded that the Bambino class now allows participation until the end of the year of the competitor’s eighth birthday. This should assist in accommodating some of the smaller drivers who may otherwise have moved up to Cadets.

Kart class technical regulations The karting community is advised of several updates to kart class technical regulations from 2016. 2016 Rotax regulations The Rotax EVO base engine unit only will be introduced from 1 January 2016. All accessories, electrical components, carburettor, exhaust system and other associated ancillaries will remain unchanged until further notice. The details can be found on the JAG website here. 2016 TKM regulations 1 January 2016 will see the introduction of a new EeziStart decompression valve in the TKM 2-stroke classes, making push-starting easier and aiding electric start engines. Full details can be obtained on the Tal-Ko website here. 2016 X30 regulations With effect from 1 January 2016 there will be a number of variants to piston markings, reed valve markings, ignition, wiring loom and push buttons. TECHNICAL / SPORTING REGULATIONS

MSA issues 2016 Tyres Lists 1A-C Following a meeting of the MSA Production Tyre Advisory Panel, the Motor Sports Association can now confirm Tyres Lists 1A-C, for use where required in 2016. To view 2016 Tyres Lists 1A-C, please click here. The new Tyre List 1C is for Competition Tyres compliant with the EEC Regulation 30 standard, and intended exclusively for use in racing. This incorporates tyres previously listed under 1B that do not comply with new legislation. Tyres designed for use on cars first registered before 1 October 1990 are exempt from EU Regulation 1222/2009 for tyre labelling. Therefore a number of tyres remaining on list 1B will only be valid for cars registered before that date – those tyres are appropriately annotated within list 1B. These lists were originally published on the MSA website in September, with Dunlop Direzza DZ03G mistakenly shown in 1C instead of 1B. This has now been corrected, with apologies for any confusion.

Towing eyes The first image, captured at a recent meeting, shows a metallic towing eye. It was bolted nicely to the chassis rail and a loop of webbing strap was added, presumably because the opening was less than the 60mm diameter required. This loop was joined by a simple nut and bolt with two large washers, and the webbing strap ‘holed’ to accept the bolt. If webbing is ‘holed’ or the edge cut, the strength of the webbing is very seriously compromised. This is not an acceptable method of joining or securing straps to vehicles. The second image shows where a competitor had used a standard vehicle manufacturer’s towing eye. In terms of strength it may be adequate but the internal diameter fails the minimum 60mm requirement (applicable for Circuit Racing (Q)19.1.3). In Sprints & Hill Climbs (S)10.1.15 only recommends suitable towing eyes, with no dimensions. Also in Stage Rallying (R)48.1.13 requires towing eyes of “adequate strength and size” but again with no dimensions. Competitors are reminded always to check and be sure of the specific regulations for their vehicle and event(s).

Extinguisher/ cut-off points The relevant regulations for extinguisher/cut-off points are: (K)3.2.2: “The triggering point from the exterior must be positioned close to the circuit breaker (or combined with it) and must be marked by the letter “E” in red inside a white circle of at least 10cm diameter with a red edge.” (K)8.5 “The triggering system location must be identified by a Red Spark on a White-edged Blue triangle (12cm base), and the ‘On’ and ‘Off’ positions clearly marked.” Pictured is an example of what not to do, as it fails on both the size and design of the identification stickers – only the location is correct. Note also that (K)8.1 states: “The circuit breaker, when operated, must isolate all electrical circuits with the exception of those that operate fire extinguishers.” Therefore if the engine is running, the breaker operating the engine needs to stop and not, for example, be running off the alternator.

Frontal Head Restraints (FHRs)

MSA NEWS | OCTOBER 2015

Competitor guidance

What is an FHR?

A Frontal Head Restraint (FHR) is a system designed to reduce injury by limiting forward head movement in the event of an accident.

Do I need to use an FHR?

Is my helmet compatible with an FHR?

From 1 January 2016 the use of an FIA-homologated FHR is mandatory in MSA National Events * for the following competitors:

FHRs can only be used with helmets on Technical Lists No.33, No.41 and No.49. Additionally, for MSA National events only, they can be of SNELL SA2015 or SAH2010 standard:

All drivers and co-drivers in Stage Rally events, with the exception of Historic Category 1 vehicles (pre-1968).

FIA Technical List No.33 – Approved helmets according to FIA 8860-2010 & FIA 8860-2004

All drivers in Circuit Race events, with the exception of Period Defined vehicles (pre-1977).

FIA Technical List No.41 – Approved helmets compatible with FHR according to FIA 8858-2010 & Approved helmets compatible with HANS according to FIA 8858-2002.

All drivers in Sprint and Hill Climb events, with the exception of Roadgoing category vehicles & Period Defined vehicles (pre-1977). For details on Period Defined vehicles, please see the definitions in the MSA Yearbook Section B (Nomenclature and Definitions).

Is the FHR I am interested in FIAhomologated? FHR systems must be FIA-homologated. There are currently two FIA FHR standards: FIA 8858-2002 and FIA 8858-2010. The FHR will bear the FIA homologation sticker, in a prominent position, stating compliance with 8858-2010 or 8858-2002.

FIA Technical List No.49 - Approved helmets according to FIA 8859-2015.

What does this mean for my helmet’s standard? All FIA 8860, FIA 8858 and FIA 8859-2015 standard helmets are compatible with FHRs as a matter of course. Snell SA2005 & SA2010 standard helmets must be listed on FIA Technical List No.41. Helmets approved as compatible with FIA Standard 88582010 and shown on Technical List No.41 part one will feature the FIA ‘Helmet compatible with FHR systems’ label shown below.

Helmets approved as compatible with FIA Standard 88582002 and shown on Technical List No.41 part two will have the FIA approval label shown below. A full list of FIA Homologated FHR systems can be found in FIA Technical List No.29. The FIA Technical lists can be found on the FIA website at the following address: http://www.fia.com/homologations

18

FOR MSA NATIONAL EVENTS ONLY* – Helmets to Snell SAH2010 and SA2015 standards are approved for use with an FIA-homologated FHR without the need for additional FIA labels. For these helmets the

anchorage posts must be marked as homologated to FIA 8858-2010.

Does the harness need to be installed in a specific way?

Can I fit helmet tether anchorages myself?

The harness shoulder straps must be mounted between 0-45 degrees below the horizontal. However, when used with an FHR, the harness shoulder straps are recommended to be mounted between 0-20 degrees below the horizontal, as shown in the diagram below.

For helmets approved in accordance with FIA standards 8858-2010, 8859-2015 and 8860-2010 and for Snell SAH2010 and SA2015 standards for MSA NATIONAL EVENTS ONLY*, the anchorages can be fitted by anyone. If you are unsure as to how to fit the helmet tether anchorages, please refer to the helmet manufacturer or agent for advice.

To achieve this angle the harness may need to be mounted to a harness bar incorporated into the vehicle’s ROPS (Roll Over Protection System).

For helmets approved in accordance with FIA 8858-2002 and 8860-2004 the anchorages may only be fitted under the supervision of the manufacturer or their appointed agent. The FIA label is applied to the helmet to confirm that the anchorages have been fitted by the manufacturer or their appointed agent. It is not possible retrospectively to fit anchorage posts to helmets approved as compatible with FIA 8858-2002.

Are the helmet tether anchors homologated? The post anchors will be engraved with FIA 8858-2010 or FIA 8858-2002. A list of homologated post anchors can be found in FIA Technical List No.29.

Are the FHR tethers homologated? The FHR tethers will bear an FIA label detailing Standard 8858-2010 or FIA 8858-2002.

Can I fit a harness bar to my ROPS? FOR MSA NATIONAL EVENTS ONLY*, regulation (K)1.2.2 has been amended (see below) to allow a harness bar to be fitted to any ROPS, including homologated ROPS, without affecting the existing homologation, providing that it is compliant with (K)1.3.9.

A list of homologated tether systems can be found in FIA Technical List No.29.

Do I need to use a specific type of harness?

(K) 1.2.2. The ROPS must not unduly impede Driver and Co-Driver access to the vehicle. Members may intrude into the interior space by passing through the dashboard, front side trim, rear side trim, and rear seats which may be folded down. ROPS must not extend beyond the front upper or rear suspension mounting points of the vehicle. Any modification to a homologated ROPS (other than fitment of door bars and harness bars) is prohibited. Tubes must not carry any fluids.

All FIA homologated harnesses are compatible with an FHR. There are specific FHR harnesses available on the market, which some users may find more comfortable to use. *An MSA National Event is an event held under the authority of National or Clubman grade permits within the territory of the Motor Sports Association.

If you have any queries regarding the fitment and use of an FHR, please do not hesitate to contact the MSA Technical Department on 01753 765000 or technical@msauk.org.

Team UK driver Evans takes career-best finish MSA Team UK driver Elfyn Evans scored a career-best second place finish on last weekend’s Tour de Corse Rallye, France’s round of the FIA World Rally Championship (WRC). The 26-year-old and his co-driver Daniel Barritt stormed into the lead on the first day, ending Friday 30 seconds clear of his rivals. Finland’s Jari-Matti Latvala took the lead on Saturday lunchtime and held on to the finish, with Evans finishing the event in second place just two seconds behind. “Needless to say we’re delighted with the result,” said Evans. “Coming here for the first time and seeing how tough the conditions were going to be, I never imagined that we’d be leading the rally by such a strong margin.

Lloyd does the double in Shanghai Team UK’s Daniel Lloyd won both in the penultimate round of the GT Asia series the Shanghai International Circuit (25-27 September). Lloyd and his Craft Bamboo Racing partner Darryl O’Young dominated the weekend’s proceedings in the #99 VLT-backed Aston Martin V12 Vantage GT3, claiming victory in both one-hour sprint races. “That was an incredible race,” said Lloyd. “The car was awesome; I went from fifth to first in the final five minutes so I’m over the moon. To get a race win on only my second race with the team and on a circuit that I’ve never been to before is fantastic.”

Performance Master Classes MSA coaches continued working with drivers in junior championships across the UK during September. Rupert Svendsen-Cook helped young karters in the MSA Kart Championships at Shenington, speaking with drivers and their parents about all aspects of professional motor sports. Meanwhile Adam Gould spent a day with BARC Junior Saloon Car Championship drivers at

Silverstone. After delivering the MSA anti-doping presentation to all drivers, Adam spent the afternoon working with competitors individually by answering questions and providing technical driving advice. The same weekend, MSA Coach James Wozencroft worked with Fiesta Junior racers at Rockingham, looking at technical aspects of the circuit and offering advice on sponsorship.

Rowland – backed by the Racing Steps Foundation – wrapped up the championship with a round to spare, having scored seven race wins so far this season. “We’ve done it and right now – I’m over the moon,” said Rowland. “In saying ‘we’ I should make it clear that means everyone at Fortec who has helped to make this possible and the Racing Steps Foundation which provides me with such fantastic support. Go Motorsport at RallyDay The fifteenth RallyDay at Castle Combe (19 September) featured Go Motorsport displays from the Fern Autotest Team, the Southern Counties Autocross Championship and Devizes and District Motor Club. These displays highlighted the affordable end of club motor sports. The famous Marshal was on hand to emphasise the importance of volunteers, and was pleased to meet former World Rally Champion Ari Vatanen, who features on the ‘Ari Needs You’ RallyFuture posters. Andrew Bisping, MSA Regional Development Officer (RDO), supportED the event and said: “This was the second major event I’ve been at this year where there has been a striking number of former members of a club stopping by to talk to us. It’s a good reminder that attracting outright new members is great, but it’s also worth remembering people whose membership has lapsed, perhaps accidentally, and may be attracted to rejoin if you approach them.” Colin Anderson, leading the Autocross display, said visitors showed great interest in the discipline and he looks forward to those conversations creating new competitors next season.

and District Motor Club and Bath Motor Club and to all the volunteers and drivers. You have done Motor Sport proud”

Go Motorsport organised a Production Car Autotest demonstration with passenger rides at last month’s Hullavington Emergency Services Show. The PCA, run in conjunction with Devizes and District Motor Club and Bath Motor Club, ran with a non-stop queue for six hours, with 350 rides given. Passengers included Charlie the Critical Care Bear mascot of the Great Western Air Ambulance charity, the local BBC Radio reporter and Angus Macpherson, the Police and Crime Commissioner for Wiltshire. The day can be summed up by social media comments from the likes of Nick Hilbert: “Last year I was the passenger. This year the Driver! Contact your local Motor Club for details.” Kerry Hammond wrote: “My son absolutely loved this. Thanks guys. You made his day.” By close of play some £870 had been raised for the event charities – the two clubs then increased the total to £1,000 from their own funds. RDO Andrew Bisping said: “This was an amazing day. To show so many people a controlled environment to drive spiritedly, but safely, alongside the Emergency Services was fantastic. I send a huge thank you to Devizes and District Motor Club and Bath Motor Club for their efforts and to all the volunteers and drivers who made this event such a success. You have done Motor Sport proud through your efforts in a very public way.”

Donington Park Richard Egger, Go Motorsport RDO for the Midlands, and members of Loughborough Car Club organised a driving activity day at Donington Park for Loughborough Grammar School students. The day gave students the chance to drive a Nissan Micra, Ford Puma or a Range Rover, while taking part in driving activities such as steering and a start/stop exercises. The day also gave the students new driving skills and a newfound interest in grassroots motor sports.

“I definitely enjoyed learning new skills and I am really looking forward to next year and learning to drive in a few years. Hopefully I will be able to join Loughborough Car Club” Josh Harris, a student at Loughborough Grammar School, said: “We were very lucky to have our field day at Donnington Circuit with Richard from Loughborough Car Club putting on a fun selection of driving activities for all of our skills. I had never driven before so started off in the automatic Micra and managed to keep most of my tennis balls on the bonnet, but it was a lot more fun after they had fallen off! “I didn’t get a chance to drive the Puma as I still need to learn to use a clutch but having a go in the Range Rover was amazing! I definitely enjoyed learning new skills and I am really looking forward to next year and learning to drive in a few years. Hopefully I will be able to join Loughborough Car Club and learn even more. Thank you to everyone who helped on the day, it was amazing.”

Clark continues to enthuse youngsters Junior 1000 Ecosse Challenge co-ordinator David Barlow joined Scotland RDO Alison Clark for a special visit to North Muirton School in Perth, introducing 260 pupils to motor sports. Barlow took a J1000 Micra rally car and a Skoda Fabia R2 – surprisingly, it was the Micra that most enthused the pupils. “They were amazed that such a normal car could be transformed into an affordable rally car,” said Clark. “We need to sow the seeds of enthusiasm at an early age, and hopefully this will translate into car club membership.”

The generation game? The Clan name Wallace is synonymous with a tenacious spirit, which could not be truer of the rallying Wallace family from the Angus region of Scotland, writes Scotland RDO Alison Clark. Father Colin has been involved in rallying for 44 years and is spotted at most Scottish events. Son Craig has driven and co-driven on events and helped organise rallies. Craig’s wife Lynsey started navigating on road rallies in 2006 and swapped seats in 2013 to drive on the Saltire – she has recently become an official. The couple’s daughter Niamh sadly passed away at just five days old. The support the Wallaces have received from the motorsport community has been phenomenal. To date, over £3,400 has been raised for the hospital that looked after Niamh and the figure is still rising. “I’ve been blown away at how much we have gathered,” said Lynsey. “We’ve had fellow competitors and rally fans donate, and the fund received the proceeds from programme sales at the Granite Rally.” It was at June’s Summer Stages at Crail that Lynsey was motivated to become an official; a conversation with veteran scrutineer Willie Greig gave her the confidence and inspiration to apply for her Trainee Scrutineer’s licence. Willie and partner Diane are regular scrutineers on the Scottish motor sport scene and are always on the lookout for new trainees. “Willie said to me, ‘I want you to have your licence application in the post this week,’” recalled Lynsey. Seven days later Lynsey headed to Knockhill for her first event as a Trainee Scrutineer. In her first three months, she has attended 11 races and rallies and is thoroughly enjoying her hands-on training. “I have learned so much in such a short space of time,” she said. “The Blue Book has become my bedtime reading!” No technical or mechanical knowledge is required to become a Trainee Scrutineer. Go Motorsport Moore’s Month Updates from South West RDO Kevin Moore “For this year’s Rally Day at Castle Combe circuit I assisted the Central Southern Go Motorsport RDO, Andrew Bisping, in providing Go Motorsport support. The static display of cars from Devizes Motor Club and the Autocross contingent of the ASWMC were well supported by club representatives and competitors alike. “Out of curiosity I wandered around the show to observe how other motor club stands faired by comparison. It quickly became apparent that no matter how exciting the array of cars being displayed on a stand, if there were no ‘staff’ manning the area there would be little or no interest shown by the attending public. “This goes to show that although a club presence at a show is a great way to market yourself, it is essential to ensure that the stand is manned at all times throughout the show. An incentive for those representing the club is that they will have the opportunity to view the show for free. A simple rota for manning the stand should be mutually agreed to break-up quiet periods during the day. “It is essential that stand staff are easily identified and appear approachable. It is also important to have some sort of ‘product’ available to share with the public. This could simply be your most recent club magazine, a membership application form or a flyer explaining the various disciplines and how to get involved. “Marketing your car club is no different to promoting your business. Remembering this and offering good value for money will work wonders for club morale and future development. “If you would like support or guidance for a promotional opportunity or wish to discuss any ideas please do not hesitate to contact your GoMotorsport Regional Development Officer. “See you again next month.”
