NIGHT OF

CHAMPIONS 21.02.21

Welcome 2 | Motorsport UK

On behalf of Motorsport UK it gives me great pleasure to welcome you to our Virtual Night of Champions celebration. Tonight we recognise our most prestigious titles, the British Championships. Our winners have overcome a season like no other, and against the odds, excelled in their chosen disciplines to claim the ultimate accolades in UK motorsport. We also take this opportunity to recognise outstanding achievement right across the motorsport landscape with a series of special awards, covering motorsport volunteers, clubs, media professionals and more. New for 2020 were the Community Supporter and Organising Team of the Year Awards - a chance for us to acknowledge and thank those

within the motorsport community who went above and beyond in a difficult year. Everyone engaged in motorsport in this country is part of our Motorsport UK family and it is only right that we also recognise those who make such an exceptional contribution to our sport. I congratulate all of tonight’s prize winners but also thank them – and you – for being part of Motorsport UK. Best wishes for another safe and successful season ahead.

Hawthorn Trophy 10 | Motorsport UK

HAWTHORN TROPHY

Lewis Hamilton

From: Stevenage, Hertfordshire Mike Hawthorn was the first driver from Britain or the Commonwealth to win the Formula One World Drivers’ Championship. His title victory in 1958 paved the way for unparalleled success for his fellow countrymen; since then, nine other Britons and a further four Commonwealth drivers have won over 20 titles at motor racing’s highest level. Hawthorn lost his life in a road crash in January 1959, just a few months after his F1 success. The Hawthorn Memorial Trophy has since been presented annually to the most successful British or Commonwealth driver in the previous F1 season. In 2020, Lewis emulated Michael Schumacher’s record by winning his seventh F1 title. Factor in his career total of 95 race wins and a record 98 pole positions, and Lewis is now arguably the most successful F1 driver in history.
