Despite how it looks outside as I write this, the season is fast approaching and we are well into the busy boat buying period. I had the privilege this month of helping some friends buy their first motorboat.

They are both quite experienced boaters, having sailed and lived on a barge, but this was their first foray into the world of cruising motorboats, and it was great to

be able to help them through the potential minefield. What was even nicer, was the excitement evident in their two young children, who were crawling all over their prospective new weekend retreat, and deciding where they were going to sleep.

Hopefully this will spark in them that something that was ignited within me at a similar age. If there is one thing we need, it is a new generation of boaters waiting in

the wings and, call me old fashioned, but a weekend on the water, visiting and exploring new places, is just so much better than the latest release on the Gamestation X7. If you, or anyone you know, is currently in the same situation, then our series of boat buying tips is sure to be useful.

This month we look at the important aspect of engines and machinery.

While I can’t offer a personal one-toone service for every potential new motorboat owner, you can follow our simple guide to what you should be looking out for when searching.

On the subject of boat buying, we have been doing a bit ourselves.

I have hinted recently about plans for a new project boat, and we have finally sourced one. I am going to leave you in suspense until next month, when we will introduce ‘Leonora’, but in the meantime for those of you treading the sales pontoons up and down the country, happy hunting.

NEWS Dunkirk Little Ships take part in ‘Dunkirk’ movie Association of Dunkirk Little Ships

A new movie, ‘Dunkirk’ retells the dramatic events surrounding the World War II evacuation, Operation Dynamo, and is set for release on 21st July. The director called upon a number of original Dunkirk Little Ships and their owners to recreate their famous rescue mission as part of the film.

These were Hilfranor, Elvin, Nyula, Papillon, MTB102, Caronia, Mary Jane, Endeavour, New Britannic, Mimosa and RIIS I. Many scenes were recreated back at Dunkerque, while other film locations include the coastal towns of Weymouth and Swanage, in Dorset. Director, Christopher Nolan’s cast includes Kenneth Branagh, Tom Hardy, Cillian Murphy, Mark Rylance and Harry Styles (from the boyband One Direction). Nolan also met with six veterans who served on the beaches at Dunkerque, including Royal Navy beach master, Vic Viner, who sadly passed away recently at the age of 99.

Beaulieu Boat Jumble 40th Anniversary Beaulieu Boat Jumble will be celebrating its 40th Beaulieu Boat Jumble 1980 anniversary on Sunday 23rd April. The first boat jumble was held on Sunday 16th April 1978 and saw more than 7,000 visitors browsing 270 stands. Beaulieu Boat Jumble is now a popular event on the boating calender and is claimed to be ‘the largest outdoor sale of maritime items in Europe’ topping 20,000 visitors. This year, a new layout will see ‘Trunk Traders’ in their own separate zone, while other sections such as the new and used boats for sale, ‘Boatmart’ area and initial ‘Boatmall’ area staying the same. To mark the anniversary event, children under 12 will be given free admission to the show for the first time and there will be a special reduced ticket price for teenagers. Advance tickets are on sale until April 13th at £8.70 an adult and £5 for 13 to 17-year-olds. Standard event tickets are £9.70 for adults and £6 for 13-17 year olds. It will also be a special anniversary for electronics company exhibitor, BHG Marine, which will be celebrating its 70th year and has just opened a new BHG Service Chandlery at the Beaulieu River Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour. For Beaulieu River mooring holders, an event-day shuttle bus will run from 9am to 6pm from the Buckler’s Hard Yacht Harbour to the Beaulieu attraction. Axopar 37SC NEW BOAT

The Finnish boat builder, Axopar has launched a new flagship model to its range, the 37SC. The streamlined 37 ‘Sports Cabin’ sleeps 2-4 with a double forward cabin with toilet and, without losing the full walk-around deck space, can incorporate an optional double aftcabin. The SC model was unveiled at Boot Düsseldorf in January and joins the existing 37 Sun-Top and T-Top models. It will be available with various outboard configurations, with twin 225hp-350hp engines, giving 35-45 knots. Prices start at €82,850 and the 37SC is available in the UK through Offshore Powerboats in Lymington.

Bavaria E34 NEW BOAT

The German boat builder, Bavaria, has announced its next model in the new E-line range, the E34. At just over 10 metres overall, this aft cabin cruiser will provide 4-6 berths with two double cabins, two toilet compartments and a spacious saloon with helm binnacle and panoramic windows. Like its larger E40 sister, the E34 will be available as a sedan or a flybridge version and will be fitted with single 60hp, 110hp and 220hp Volvo Penta diesel shaftdrive engines, with an electric hybrid drive option.

Prices start at ÂŁ157,391 for the Sedan version and ÂŁ167,826 for the Fly version, fitted with a D3 110hp (prices are ex VAT/ex works). Clipper Marine is the main UK distributor for Bavaria, with regional dealers Tingdene Boat Sales, Burton Waters Boat Sales and Marine Sales Scotland.

Thames Used Boat Show announced This coming April, a new event will see a showcase of new and used boats for sale at Thames & Kennet Marina on the River Thames. The 10-day, free-entry Thames Used Boat Show will be held between the 14th-23rd April and hosted by Tingdene Marinas at its Thames & Kennet site at Caversham Lakes. The on-site broker, Tingdene Boat Sales, will have motorboats from its new ranges on display, Bavaria, Broom Boats, Antaris, Da Vinci Yachts and Viking, as well as a selection of used boats for sale on its dedicated pontoon. The broker is appealing for used boats for sale to particate, with a free listing, berthing and exterior washdown among the incentives. Boat buying incentives include discounts on annual marina berthing and chandlery goods, plus boat handling tuition and free lifejackets.

NEWS Brundall Boat Show

Call the NCI

The three marinas in Brundall have joined forces to host the Brundall Boat Show on Saturday 20th May 2017. Broom Boats, Norfolk Boat Sales and Norfolk Yacht Agency will collectively host the show, which will form part of the Broads Outdoor Festival.

New and pre-owned boats will be available to view on the water, alongside local marine business exhibitors. There will also be key events scheduled throughout the day across the three marinas, with food and entertainment. Matthew Harvey, Managing Director of Broom Boats, said “With the absence of Horning Boat Show from the calendar this year, we felt the region needed a boat show, particularly given the Broads is synonymous with boating. Brundall has fantastic facilities, so together with our neighbours at Norfolk Yacht Agency and Norfolk Boat Sales, we hope to provide visitors with a great day out.” The event is open 10am-4pm.

The National Coastwatch Institution (NCI) provides eyes along the coast at 50 lookouts in England and Wales and the voluntary organisation is encouraging boaters to use them. The stations report observed incidents, can provide actual weather conditions and forecasts, and keep a listening watch on VHF channel 16, local channels and also on the NCI’s dedicated channel 65. Motorboats invited to join Southampton Parade of Sail Southampton Sailing Week is a new event set to grace the Solent, with 6 days of sailing and water activities in and around Southampton Waters. A key part will be a Parade of Sail taking place on 27th May, which will see boats of all shapes and sizes gather and parade along the River Itchen. Participating boats will gather between the Northam and Itchen Bridges before midday and, led out by a Svitzer tug, will parade under the Itchen Bridge pictured. Boat owners can register via the website here. Spectators will be able to see the action from the Itchen Bridge, along the waterfront at MDL Marina’s Ocean Village, Woolston and Weston Shore.

Honda concept outboard The outboard manufacturer, Honda Marine has given boat owners a glimpse into the future by revealing a concept engine at the 2017 Miami International Boat Show. Designers at Honda’s Advanced Design Group drew inspiration from the 2017 Acura NSX Supercar for the striking prototype, making it taller, slimmer and more sculpted than current engines. The ‘Nouvelle Blue Pearl’ coloured outboard features honeycomb mesh trim and a floating winged blade. Honda Marine indicated that there would be different colours available should the engine go into production.

NEWS Prestige 460 NEW BOAT The French builder, Prestige Yachts has unveiled the plans for a new 460, which will launch at Cannes Yachting Festival in September. Powered by twin Volvo IPS500 or IPS600 engines, the new 46ft flybridge will take over from the Prestige 450 and sleeps 4-6 with two double ensuite cabins, including a full beam master cabin, plus a 2-person crew cabin. Designed by Garroni Design and engineered by JP Concepts, the 460’s interior and exterior offers similar styling to the new 630 and 680 models and will feature enlarged wheelhouse windows. Brighton Marina to host new and used boat show Brighton Marina is set to host an all-new Brighton New & Used Boat Show on the weekend of 1st-2nd April. Show visitors will be able to view new and used RIB’s and motorboats, ashore and on the water, along the newly developed West Quay. Boats for sale and stalls will be manned by Brighton’s onsite marine tenants, which include Brighton Boat Sales and Ancasta International. Other show features will include lifejacket clinics run by the onsite chandlery, Nicky’s Chandlery, as well as a series of liferaft demonstrations in conjunction with Seago Ltd. The chandlery will also be hosting a Flares Disposal Day on the Saturday between 10am-3pm. The free-entry event is being organised by Brighton Marina operator, Premier Marinas and will be open 10.30am to 4pm. Port of London launch new Tidal Thames App The Port of London Authority (PLA) has launched a free app to provide easy access to the latest navigational information on the tidal Thames. The PLA’s first ever app ‘is aimed at making planning trips on the Thames easier’. Features include live tidal data from twelve locations along the 95 mile tidal section of River Thames, an events calendar, mooring locations and facilities and an alert system for Notices to Mariners, which detail the latest information on events, engineering works and recent changes that users need to be aware of before setting off. The app is available from the App Store for Apple devices and Google Play for Android devices.

NEWS Public slipway to close on Loch Lomond The Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park Authority has announced that it will be closing the slipway at Milarrochy Bay on Loch Lomond. Unfortunately, as this is only one of two public slipways on the 24-mile-long loch, it has caused much upset amongst local boaters, boat clubs and visitors. In an online statement the authority listed health and safety as one of the reasons, saying ‘Milarrochy Bay is increasingly popular with families and other people including swimmers and kayakers, and the risk of people launching boats from vehicles and trailers, without staff on site to supervise them, is too high’. Cost was another factor detailed, it said ‘numbers of motorised launches at Milarrochy Bay have been consistently falling over the last few years. The fee for launching powered craft comes nowhere near to covering the cost of staff. The cost of staffing at the appropriate levels to safely facilitate launches, works out to be £54 per launch, which is almost the same as the £55 launch fee boat users pay for a whole year. This is simply not best use of public money.’ The authority stated that there will no reduction in launching fees, and added ‘The cost of providing safe public launch facilities far outweighs the annual fees for boat launching.’ In a statement to a local paper, one boat club argued that the Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway was not always accessible, indeed in the past, this busy slipway in Balloch has been closed for events such as the Great Scottish Swim. The authority addressed this point and said ‘When planning any event that requires the Duncan Mills Memorial Slipway to be closed to the public, we will consider access to the loch at other locations. Decisions will be made based on the particular circumstances of the event.’ The Milarrochy Bay slipway will be closed from April 1st.

Historic boats expected at Fambridge River Festival Yachthavens/East Coast Photos

The free-entry Fambridge River Festival is now three years old and this year the event will see a number of historic boats in attendance. Held on Sunday 28th May at the Yacht Station at Fambridge Yacht Haven on the River Crouch in Essex, the historic line up will include Vic 96 a Steam Coasting Lighter, Puffer a 44ft Gravesend Bawley, a 1961 Touchstone Tug from the River Thames, a 72ft classic gaff and James Steven’s No 14 Lifeboat. Onshore, there will be live music and stalls for local yacht clubs, arts and crafts, marine equipment and services. The local pub, The Ferry Boat Inn, will be providing an outdoor bar area and BBQ. There will also be demonstrations by the Burnham-on-Crouch RNLI Lifeboat, Essex Marine Police and South Woodham Coastguard Rescue Team.

Monograde or Multigrade oil changes I was interested to read your answer to the question about oil changes in the February 17 issue, recommending a change from the manufacturers recommended monograde 30 or 40 SAE to a multigrade. I would suggest for some engines this might not be the best advice. My engines are Caterpillar 3116 and the manufacturers also recommend the same monograde oil.

In a document about diesel engine fluids there is a specific warning about changing to multigrades. I quote ‘Multigrade oils use high molecular weight polymers as viscosity index improvers. When the crankcase blowby flows through the turbocharger and the aftercooler, the viscosity index improvers can adhere to the turbocharger compressor and aftercooler core. The fouling of the turbocharger and aftercooler can cause reduced air flow, loss of power, and increased black smoke. The emission of black smoke results in buildup of soot on the transom of the boat.’ I would suggest that before changing oils search the web for information first to see if there are any warnings for your engine. Gilbert Park Editor replies: Thank you for your email. My advice, specifically regarding the MerCruiser engine in question, is correct, and the same does apply to many other engines, but you make a good point. We would suggest all boat owners check with a dealer, if they decide to move away from the oil recommended in their owner’s manual, and in many, but clearly not all, cases, a swap to a good quality multi-grade should be acceptable.

Helsinki’s Vene Båt show saw a number of interesting boat launches.

We paced the hall to bring you the best of the new models for 2017

T

he winter months tend to be known in the industry as boat show season.

In quick succession, and in the space of five months, we have Cannes, Southampton, METs, Paris, London and Düsseldorf, surely enough GRP and boating related equipment to satisfy even the most ardent boating enthusiast. Despite this, there is another show in early February that we like to attend every year as a sort of finale to the show season. At the Vene Båt Helsinki boat show you will see one of the finest collections of new practical and affordable motorboats on display during the winter.

This is not a show for sailors, nor a show for the super rich, as there are no yachts and the largest boat you will find will be what many

exhibitors at the Cannes boat show will call ‘entry level’. In short a perfect collection of shiny GRP for the Motorboat Owner reader.

Helsinki also just happens to be a fantastic place to visit in February, where you will find frozen harbours and snow like we used to get in the UK. Southampton and London are great and convenient. Düsseldorf is unrivalled in its size. Paris is a wonderful place to visit before Christmas, but next year I would urge you to keep some cash in reserve and try Helsinki. I don’t think you will be disappointed, but you will need your hat, scarf and gloves. We trawled the three halls at Helsinki’s Messukeskus Exhibition Centre to bring you the best ‘uutuus’ (that’s new in Finnish) boats for 2017.

Aquador 35AQ

The 35AQ is the first Aquador to come out of a link-up between the builder and prolific Norwegian designer Espen Thorup. The result is a very different Aquador to what we are used to, but equally a very practical and usable model. It is also the first boat that I have seen, certainly at this size, with a heated front windscreen, something that has been around on average family saloons since the early 90’s. This two cabin, one toilet compartment wheelhouse boat also features a continuous seating arrangement along the port side that, with the wheelhouse doors fully opened, completely merges the inside and outside spaces. The offset wheelhouse delivers a deep, wide side deck to starboard and a sliding door next to the helm provides easy deck access for the skipper. Engine options are single or twin sterndrive diesels and, based on the current Euro price, the 35AQ should start at around £250,000. UK dealer: MGM boats www.mgmboats.com

Sea Ray 320 Sundancer

Not all of the interesting boats on show are built in Scandinavia. This new model from Sea Ray started a fierce debate about what constitutes a bowrider, day cruiser or sports cruiser. In the 320 you actually have a little bit of all three, as Sea Ray has managed to fit a sunken bow that contains three sunloungers, while retaining the sort of headroom you would expect on a 32 foot sports cruiser. Ok, so the galley is in the cockpit, which in my mind makes it a sort of day cruiser, but you do get four berths, a separate toilet compartment and a fantastically sociable cockpit. It really is a boat that crams more into its hull length than should be feasibly possible.

Strictly speaking it may not be the best boat for northern European waters, but move it a few hundred miles south and I can’t think of a better boat, at this size, for family fun in the sun. Barchetta 26

The Barchetta, 26 at first glance, appears to be an exotic day boat with hints of 60’s Italian style and flair, but there is rather more to it.

Nordkapp 805 Enduro

The low slung, sleek lines of the 805 Enduro are rather remarkable when you consider that this boat, like the Sea Ray, has managed to include a bow lounging area as well as a cabin below. OK, the cabin headroom is somewhat limited but it is still quite a feat.

The unusual cockpit side windows are not just a design feature. The builder wanted to include easy side access into the design, so the cill at the bottom of the glass is formed from non-slip GRP, to provide a step for this purpose. I can think of no real practical reason why I should want to own an XO DFNDR, but that doesn’t lessen the desire in the slightest. Just look at it. Anyone that thinks a 110 is better than a Range Rover is going to love this boat, and I suspect the name is more than just a nod to the car in question. In truth a roll cage is about as useful on a boat as self-righting flotation bags on a car, but you can’t argue that they don’t look the part. It’s even got a roof rack to store some spare wheels or tyres, or whatever the boating equivalent may be. It’s black, it’s got fuel cans strapped to the front, it has spot lights on the top and the one at the show was fitted with a pair of black 150hp Evinrude G2’s.

elcome to part three of our guide to buying a used boat, and what to look for before committing to an offer and a professional survey. This month we are going to look at the boats mechanical systems.

A used boat purchase is, quite possible, one of the largest financial commitments many of us will make. With a motorboat, there is no doubt that much of a used boat’s financial value is tied up in the

engines and other machinery. With a mid-sized diesel engine and drive system retailing at around £30,000, it makes sense to do whatever you can to ensure that these parts of the boat are in tiptop condition. Interestingly, most pre-purchase surveys do not focus on the mechanical aspects of the vessel.

They may comment on appearances, but are unlikely to delve into the working of these expensive bits of kit, or provide

any real useful information. That is why it is particularly important for a buyer to do some research for themselves, and, if necessary, employ a separate expert to look over the engines. Of course, the sea trial will also provide lots of useful information about the condition of a boat’s mechanical systems, but if you can at least make some basic checks first, you have given yourself a head start.

In Part 1 and 2 we talked about the hull and interior. This month we look at machinery

MACHINERY - ENGINES

Inboards, sterndrives and outboards The big one, and probably the one item that a used motorboat buyer worries about more than any thing else. Whether your boat has a small outboard for its main propulsion, or a pair a whopping inboard diesels, the engine, or engines, will represent a large part of the boat’s value. So, what checks can the layman make to ensure that they are in good, serviceable condition?

The first thing to check is whether there is any service history. Engines that have a documented servicing regime, that complies with the manufacturers recommendations, means that you start on a very good footing. Any problems will almost certainly have been dealt with during their lifetime, and the

chances are that these engines will be in as good a condition as you can expect for their age. The next consideration is engine hours. Low hours are not always a good thing, as engines can deteriorate through lack of use, just as much as they can from being heavily used. I would rather have an engine with the right number of hours for its age, with a good service history, than a very

low hour engine with none. But, what constitutes the right number of hours?

A good yardstick is around 50 hours per year, ideally with evidence that those hours have been clocked up reasonably evenly throughout the engine’s life.

Unfortunately engine hour meters are not always a good indication of the hours an engine has run. Many will have stopped working, some will have been replaced, and lots of the digital displays from the 1990’s will be blank.

This is where you have to become a bit of a detective and use the boat’s log and maintenance records to tie all of the information together.

Next it’s time to get down into the engine room, or, if it is an outboard, remove the cowling. First impressions count here and the general cleanliness of the engine room, engine and other ancillaries will tell you a great deal about how well the whole boat, and particularly the engines, have been maintained. If the bilge if full of oily water, or the engine is covered in corrosion or salt crystals, you should start to question how well cared for

Engine hours can be used to determine the kind of the life the engines have had

the boat has been, under its present ownership. Equally, if the boat is old, keep your expectations realistic. A 20 year old engine and engineroom are bound to be showing some signs of their two decades of use. This is where viewing a few examples of the same, or similar, boats start to pay off. You will get a feel for just how an engine room of that particular age should look, and good ones or bad ones will start to jump straight out at you.

Looking over the engine itself, check for evidence of water or oil leaks.

Again, old engines may have some minor leaks, but even these should be used as part of the bargaining process, with a view to getting them fixed, if the sale proceeds. Areas to pay particular attention to are around the water pump, exhaust components and crankshaft.

Oil leaks from the latter could be quite labour intensive to fix. Evidence of extensive corrosion on the engine or its components should raise concerns and may indicate a long standing leak.

The next thing to do is check the engine’s service items. This can help to back up the service history paperwork.

If the oil and fuel filters look like they have never been changed, but the paperwork says the boat has just had a service, it’s time to start asking some searching questions. Also check the condition of any belts and pull the oil level dipstick to ensure the oil level is correct. You should also check the colour and condition of the oil. It should be golden brown if the engine has just had an oil change, or a nice gloss black if not. Any hint of milkiness of the oil means it has water in it, which could indicate a head gasket issue, or other serious problem. Also, pull the oil filler cap and look on the underside of it and down into the valve gear. This is another area where milky oil will collect, if there is water in the oil. It is also a good idea to open the coolant header tank on an indirect cooled engine. If the water inside is a rusty brown colour, it indicates that

coolant changes have not been kept up to date and the engines internal components are starting to degrade.

Even if the coolant is a nice green/blue/ yellow colour, but the header tank itself is stained rusty brown, this tells you that the boat at some time has been allowed to run for too long with old coolant, or has suffered from overheats at some point.

MACHINERY - DRIVE GEAR

Shaft Drive

If the boat you are looking at is shaft driven, then you can check the gearbox oil level, oil condition and check for leaks.

You should also check, as best you can, the condition of the stern gland. If the boat is afloat, is it leaking excessively? If it is a traditional stuffing box type, does it look well maintained with further adjustment available? If the boat is on the hard, get underneath and check that the stern tube is well fixed to the boat, that it is damage free, and that the shaft sits centrally within it. If it looks offset, this could indicate an alignment problem or a bent shaft. If the boat has a P or A bracket, grab hold of it and ensure that there is zero movement.

Check the propeller for damaged blades and ensure that the rudder is well secured and in good condition. All of the underwater gear should be checked for corrosion problems. The shaft usually suffers in the areas you can’t see, but the bronze parts, such as props and

rudders, should have a good bronze colouration to them. Any hint of pinkness indicates dezincification and may require replacement.

Sterndrive

Old sterndrives can be a money pit if they have been neglected.

First you should check that items like the U joint and exhaust bellows are in good condition, commensurate with the service history. They should have been replaced within the last two years at least. Any cracking of the rubber would be enough to worry me. Any splits or holes, Sterndrives should be well maintained and particularly in the U joint bellows, and I mainly corrosion free. A split or damaged would be walking away. Anodes should bellows is likely to mean an expensive bill 28

be within service. It doesn’t matter if they are near the end of their life as long as there is enough left to be doing their job. Corrosion on the drive body is inevitable to some extent, but if it looks extensive, to the point where it is more than just on the surface, I would be concerned. In worst case scenarios, the corrosion can go right through the body, losing all of the oil and exposing the gears to the water. In this case the drive is almost certainly a write off, and will need expensive replacement.

Many drives will have aluminium props, and these are easily damaged and also susceptible to corrosion. Bear in mind a new set of aluminum duo props is around £500 when making an offer on a boat with damaged or corroded propellers. While checking the props, look behind them and see if there is any oil around the back of the hub. Drive shaft seals are a common failure and, although not expensive to replace, may have allowed water into the drive. If you can, pull the dipstick from the top of the drive and check the condition of the oil. If the boat has been recently run, milky oil here indicates water ingress. Unfortunately, on a boat that has sat idle for some time, any water will gather at the bottom, which means it may not be evident on the dipstick. The only way to tell would be to drain some oil off from the bottom, which is beyond the scope of your initial inspection but maybe something to bear in mind if the sale proceeds.

Another area of concern should be the power trim and tilt. Check the rams for evidence of oil around the end seal and,

if you can, extend the drive upwards so you can check the operation of the trim as well as slowing access to check the shaft of the ram itself. Any corrosion or pitting on the shaft will require replacement, as a leak will not be too far away. New rams could be as much as £500 each and, if you have four that are all leaking or damaged, you are looking at a hefty bill. Not only that, in some rare occasions, you have to remove the engines to allow removal of the rams.

Some rams can be repaired in situ with a new seal kit for considerably less but, do your research first to ensure that yours can be repaired in this way. Lastly, get a good firm grip on the drive and see if there is any movement that might indicate worn components. A small amount of side-to-side movement is acceptable but it should be pretty solid in the up and down plane.

Outboard Gearboxes

Like a stern drive, the gearbox is prone to water ingress. Without a dipstick, the gearbox oil can only be checked by draining, so it is important to look for evidence of an oil leak from the shaft seal behind the prop. Also check the condition of the aluminium propeller.

Small amounts of damage on aluminum props can usually be repaired for considerably less than the cost of a replacement. If, however the prop is weakened by corrosion, replacement is probably the only option. Also check again for corrosion to the gearcase and the condition of the anodes. If the outboard has power trim and tilt, check the operation of this, and that there are no oil leaks from the hydraulic ram, pipework and pump.

MACHINERY - OTHER SYSTEMS

Trim Tabs

While you are working around the transom, you should check the trim tabs. If they are hydraulic, check for evidence of oil leaks. If they are electrically operated, with externally mounted motors such as Eltrim models, check that the small rubber gaiter is in good condition, as water ingress here will ruin the motor. If you can power up the tabs, ensure that they both go fully up and down and that they do so at a similar speed. Electrically driven ones that operate slowly is an indication that the motor may be failing.

Other engine room checks

Back inside the engine room, check the oil reservoirs for any drive trim, or trim tabs. The oil, usually red in colour, should be clear. If it looks like strawberry milkshake, then there is water present.

Also while here, inspect the boat’s batteries. They should look clean and be free of any bulging of the casing and any corrosion on the terminals. If you haven’t yet checked the fuel tanks, here is another chance. Look for evidence of leaks or corrosion. Replacing tanks is a labour and cost intensive business.

Generators If the boat you are viewing

has a generator set, treat this as another engine. Check for evidence of a good servicing regime and check the condition of the oil and the coolant. You will also want to see and hear the generator running at some point. If it is not possible to do so at this stage, add it to your list of checks for the sea trial.

Bowthruster

Hopefully you have already checked the outside of the bowthruster while inspecting the hull. On the inside, check again that the tube is firmly fixed, with no signs of cracking or delaminating. Check that the motor is correctly and neatly installed and that the wiring is in good condition. If the thruster has its own battery, ensure that this is secured in place and free of damage. Some thrusters have a separate oil reservoir and a pipe to feed it to the gearbox. Check that this is topped up with clean oil and is all leak free. If the boat has a stern thruster fitted, carry out the same checks for that.

Fire systems

I would put money on the fact that more than 50% of portable fire extinguishers onboard all of the used boats for sale in the UK, at any one time, are out of service. On any boat, see these as a service item and expect to replace them, they are not expensive and the cost of getting them serviced will often outweigh the cost of a replacement.

Engineroom systems are a different matter. A good automatic engineroom system can run to quite a few quid, so if there isn’t one, or the one installed is old and past its service date, it would be fair to throw the cost of replacement into your calculations when making an offer. Don’t be surprised to find outlawed Halon extinguishing systems on some older boats. These will certainly need replacing, and you also get to deal with the difficulty of disposing of this greenhouse gas.

Gas With gas systems there is little that you can

check. The flexible hose from the regulator should have the manufactured date printed on it. There are no specific recommendations for how long the service life of this hose is, but 5 years seems to be accepted as the norm. Luckily there is usually only a metre or so, so replacement cost is insignificant.

You should check, as best you can, the integrity of the gas locker and any exposed pipework and joins. If possible, and with the owner’s or broker’s permission, you could test the flame failure device on all burners by lighting them and then listening for the clunk of the solenoid closing after extinguishing. Any gas appliance without a flame failure device, or with a faulty one, should be changed.

Heating If the boat is fitted with diesel fired warm

air heating, you should test this for operation. They are a great option to have, and in my mind worth paying a bit more for a boat with one fitted, but if you are paying more, you really should ensure that it is working. If this can’t be done at this stage, it’s another job you could add to the list for sea trial day.

By now you should have reached a stage where you have a good idea of the work the boat may need to bring it up to scratch. Using this information, you should be in a position to make an offer if you wish to proceed. The offer should be subject to survey and sea trial, and confirmation that items you may not be able to test until sea trial, such as generator, heating, bow thruster etc, are in good working order. It goes without saying that the sea trial is mostly about checking the operation of the engines so this doesn’t need to be implied.

Once your offer has been made, and accepted, this is the time to employ the professional surveyor. You don’t have to do this, and indeed on small value boats you may deem it unnecessary, but I believe that if the cost of the boat is a significant amount to you, a survey is well worth getting for peace of mind. Without doubt, a surveyor will find things that you didn’t, They are, after all, trained to look for them.

They also have access to kit and experience that you cannot replicate. With the survey in hand, and assuming nothing of a material nature was found that makes you decide to pull out of the purchase or renegotiate your offer, it is time to organize the sea trial.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a YDSA or a IIMS accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

Ask anyone who knows me what I am likely to have on my feet at any time, and on any occasion, the answer will be deck shoes. Weddings aside, I can’t think of an occasion when I am likely to slip anything else on. I do the garden in them, I work underneath my car in them, I decorate Motorboat in them and, of course, I go boating in Owner them. They have a phylon (yes, that is a real thing) midsole, which offers lightweight cushioning, and soles that are said to provide safe and reliable grip in the most demanding of conditions. So have they lived up to their marketing hype? Well, I can confirm that they are indeed very comfortable. I usually find that deck shoes, especially if abused, tend to lose their shape and support rather quickly. These are still as snug and supporting as the day I first donned them. I can also confirm that I have remained upright the entire time, and that includes maneuvering around some wet decks, as well as negotiating some typically wintery pontoons. Like many deck shoes though, they are produced with dinghy sailors in mind and so come with breathable panels that are designed to allow water out, but which also allows water in. This means that they are not as waterproof as I, and the average motorboater, would really like. These panels also allow a stiff breeze to penetrate, which may do wonders for foot odour, but also means that they could be a little chilly on the coldest of days.

Pricewise, they are pretty competitive for a branded technical deck shoe, but if you are not fussed about having this year’s colours, you can save a few quid by buying up last year’s stock, which Henri Lloyd seem to be selling off at just £53. Neale Razor cut soles provide great grip

A

re you looking for a cruising motorboat that offers voluminous acomodation, comfort and oodles of deck space? This month we have been looking at a very clever, British-built trawler-style boat that has been with us for over 40 years, the Corvette 32, a model that combines the handsome looks and characteristics of a traditional-style trawler yacht, but yet has the ability to offer speeds up to 28 knots.

The Corvette had a rather turbulent history, with its design being sold on and resurrected four times over a period of 36

years. It was originally designed in 1972 by British naval architect Terry Compton, of the company Compton-McGill, and was first built in 1974 by Hampshire-based, Corvette Marine.

We suspect some inspiration may have come from the American trawler market, and the likes of Grand Banks, but the Corvette 32 is a very British design, and great things had been achieved aboard this chunky boat measuring exactly 32ft. It offered six berths in two separate cabins, a flybridge, a raised aft deck, fully walkaround decks and an aft master cabin,

British-built aft cabins of the 70’s included the Solar 32, Freeman 32 and Ranger 36, but there was simply nothing quite like the Corvette in the UK. The boat was originally powered by twin diesel Volvo Penta or Mercedes-Benz engines, which, believe it or not, were mated to sterndrives or V-drives. This engine configuration encroached on the aft cabin significantly, but the builder still managed to squeeze in a double berth.

MD32A engines, the Corvette 32 made its debut at the 1974 Southampton Boat Show, priced at £27,540.

We understand that the Lymingtonbased company built approximately 10 32’s before going into liquidation in 1977.

But all was not lost. In 1984 the 32’s moulds were bought by newly formed Nottingham-based company, Corvette Cruisers Ltd. After producing a few more V-drive boats, the builder switched to a conventional shaftdrive configuration, which was not only of great benefit to the aft cabin, with the engines now under

the saloon floor, it also provided better handling. The boat was reborn. MDL Boat Sales, based at Penton Hook Marina at Chertsey, was the main Corvette dealer during the 1980’s and exhibited the allnew 32 at the 1986 Southampton Boat Show for £58,995.

During the late 80’s, the builder introduced a Mediterranean version of the Corvette 32. This was essentially a 4-berth aft cockpit trawler boat, with a large flybridge and a full beam covered aft cockpit. We came across one such example for sale in the UK a few years ago, but we have been unable to find out how many of these were actually built.

In the wake of some quality control issues, the struggling builder sought to revitalise the 32 in the early 90’s by introducing a refined Classique version.

Sadly this move was shortlived as the company fell into liquidation in 1991/2.

Between 60-70 Corvette 32’s were built at

the Nottingham factory before it closed.

The boat builder, Seacoral Motor Yachts based at Reedham in Norfolk, bought the company in 1992 and a dealership was established with the Shepperton-based broker, Boat Showrooms of London.

Seacoral sought to revitalise the model in everyway possible, and rebranded it the ‘320’. Larger engines were on the long list of refinements, and the revised model was exhibited at the 1992 Southampton Boat Show priced at £110,802.

By 1997 a non-flybridge, Europa version was being offered. Designed to appeal to those looking to explore UK or European waterways, the Europa has a helm position on the aft deck and a lower airdraft of 2.6m. However, the design did not prove popular, and we understand that only one of these was built.

Seacoral’s build quality was highly regarded, and consequently the 320 grew in popularity. The company also raised

its profile by helping owners of older 32’s with refits and renovation work.

Operating under a revised company name, Corvette Marine, from 1994/5, the 320 was built at the Reedham factory until 2008 when, unfortunately, the recession forced the factory to close its doors. Approximately 12 320’s were built under the Seacoral name, and 46 under the Corvette Marine name. This equates to roughly four boats a year produced over a period of 14 years.

But again, all was not lost and the Corvette was to rise again from the ashes for a fourth time, thanks to US boat builder, Fleming Yachts. The builder reignited the Corvette Marine name and set up production at its Tung Hwa factory in Taiwan. The two previous owners and managers of the Reedham factory, Steve Robson and Rod Nixon relocated to Taiwan to oversee construction and conception of a new model. In 2010, Fleming launched the new 340 model, which was based on the same 32ft hull.

The 340 is a heavier boat, at 7500kg, and crucially, the aft walkaround decks have vanished to provide a full beam master cabin with an island double berth, and a one-level raised aft deck above. It also has a larger integral bathing platform, which brought the overall length up to 34ft 10in.

Five 340’s have been built to date.

On the used market today the Corvette spans a massive price range of £40-£180k.

The 00’s models with larger engines will, of course, be among the most desirable and hold their value of £100k upwards on the used market. 90’s boats fitted with engines of 200hp upwards are an appealing compromise to a savvy buyer, offering speed, value for money and build quality. Finally 1980’s 32’s are usually the

most affordable on the market, and you are likely to find that doting owners have ironed out many of the quality control problems suffered during this era. While these might be a little underpowered, they could prove superb cruising liveaboards for inland and coastal forays.

Despite its troublesome past, British boaters have really taken to the Corvette and, it seems, once you have owned one you will be loathed to part with it, nor find anything to match it for space, size, ability and comfort. As one owner said, “You really don’t feel like you’re on board a 32 foot boat. It feels like a little ship.” Consequently these boats tend to stay in an owners possession for a long time. So what are these boats like to live with today? We stepped aboard a 1995 Reedham-built example to find out more.

It has a very practical Scandinavian feel. The wheelhouse is light and versatile as a main living area

and you will immediately feel the comfort and security of the wheelhouse. This spacious main living area combines entertaining, helming and cooking facilities, which all sounds quite utilitarian but is actually extremely practical and a very comfortable space. A large windscreen and side windows provide partial-panoramic views, with two smaller opening ports looking out across the aft deck. Some mid 80’s 32’s can be identified by a smaller, sliding wheelhouse window above the galley on the starboard side, allowing space for an extractor vent above.

An L-shaped seating area on the port side offers seating for four people, storage, and a table that drops down to create an occasional double berth. Interestingly, U-shaped saloon seating was offered as a £2.5k extra on a 90’s Reedham pricelist.

The galley unit is immediately opposite the dinette and is edged with a very

sturdy grabrail. Here, lift-out panels in the worktop conceal a sink/drainer and a four-burner hob. Below the worktop is a generous-size fridge, a large shelved cupboard for storage and a gas oven and grill with pan storage underneath. A lack of galley storage was addressed by later builders who fitted eye-level cupboards above the galley windows for crockery storage. The galley usually has a moulded GRP worktop, which can stain easily.

Consequently, we are aware of one owner replacing this with a Corian-effect top.

The helm lies slightly off-centre to port, and offers good visibility out of the boats huge three-pane windscreen. An adjustable single helm seat on a loose pedestal is seen on early boats and this can be moved over to the table. Later models may have a seat on a fixed pedestal, which is better for sea going boats. You will note there is no navigator’s seat but

this matter was addressed in much later models by shortening the dinette seating and slotting the nav seat into the small gap on the port side.

Dashes and dials are arranged on panels ahead of the helmsman. This invariably leaves bracket mounting the only option for larger pieces of equipment, such as a radar screen or chartplotter.

Whilst in the wheelhouse we would recommend inspecting the wood surfaces and cabin linings for stains that could indicate leaks, in particular below the windscreen, windows and next to the side door. The end of the galley unit is one area that might well be suffering from exposure to the elements. It is possible to get under the decks on the starboard side, if you move the side steps away. This reveals a hole just

Making use of the bow shape, the forward cabin offers two berths and a central toilet compartment

large enough to crawl into.

The Corvette boasts an average headroom of 6ft throughout and, as you move through the boat, the feeling of space and practicality continues. Moving forward, a companionway door and top hatch opens up to reveal the boat’s rather unconventional forward cabin. After you have descended steeply into the space, you will find that the cabin is divided into two by a central bow toilet compartment and wardrobe. The cabin offers two generously wide single bunks each side and plentiful storage, with every cavity utilised for drawers, cupboards and open-fronted lockers. We would recommend inspecting the bunk upholstery for stains, as leaks from the deck air vents are a common problem. The toilet compartment is a good size and is fitted with an escape hatch, a sea toilet and a sink unit with a shower mixer tap and storage. Overall this cabin is ideal for children or two adults sharing.

A door and a set of steps aft of the galley lead down into the spacious aft cabin master suite. Despite the encroachment of

the early engine configurations, and the changes of ownership, the layout in this cabin remained fairly similar throughout its build. Inside is a double berth to port, with a hanging locker, and generous toilet and shower compartment to starboard.

One thing that may be different from boat-to-boat is the exact placement of the double berth. On the very first boats, this berth was flush against the port side.

However, by the mid 80’s, an angled berth was introduced allowing access to both sides of the bed. A choice of these two layouts was offered with the 90’s 32 Classique, and Seacoral/Corvette Marine continued with this. 00’s boats will usually have an angled berth.

Again every cavity and crevice of this cabin has been utilised for lockers or shelving. On the Seacoral example viewed, we particularly liked the way the dead space under the port side decks had been utilised as an open-fronted chart locker, and the additional lockers and drawers inside the massive wardrobe are surely a godsend. More storage, and the boats two

40-gallon water tanks, can be found under the aft berth. A panel in the base of the transom dresser unit can be removed to inspect the boats steering gear.

While customisation during build was fairly common, significant changes to the layout were rare. However, we have seen one very unusual 2+2 berth variation.

This particular boat had the galley in the forward cabin with a bench settee and corner fridge unit on the starboard side of the wheelhouse.

Several different wood finishes may be seen aboard Corvettes, the most common, and most popular, being teak. The 1995 Seacoral example we viewed had been fitted out with mahogany joinery, which had been stained darker at the request of the owner in build. The dark wood may not be to everyone’s taste and could limit the market for resale. However, we are told that a few days work by a wood joiner could reveal a lighter shade. With a two-tone wood effect proving popular on modern boats, highlighting and

varnishing only certain wear areas, such as trim and edging could be an option.

Traditional teak and holly flooring was a popular option in the wheelhouse. A generator and diesel heating are two useful extras to look for. During the 00’s, a 6kva generator priced at £7k, and a 5kw Eberspacher heating system with four outlets was available for £3k.

On Deck The Corvette’s side decks are absolutely incredible, so much so that in normal conditions there is usually no need to use the superbly sturdy metal guardrails when moving about on deck. The side decks are over 2ft wide in places, and are enclosed by a deep bulwark that is topped by a chunky teak toerail. The onelevel decks extend all the way around the boat, narrowing at the stern between the transom and aft cabin moulding. The boat also sports very impressive trawler-like deck hardware, with metal-lined scuppers, rubbing strips, fairleads and chunky

The Corvette has incredibly wide decks, which make this boat a joy to crew or singlehand. You will note that late 320’s have stainless flybridge trim detailing, as opposed to teak, seen on early boats

stainless steel cleats.

Most Corvettes were fitted with teak decks as standard. These not only look fantastic, they are usually very practical and hardwearing. However, teak decks need to be maintained and as there is a lot of it on these boats, it is crucial to make sure that these are in good condition. Also be aware, teak-faced ply was used aboard many 80’s boats, which can be prone to rot. If the decks are in poor condition, and replacement is the only option, this could set you back many thousands of pounds.

Removal of the old deck is a mammoth job, and to be done properly the aft deck

seat mouldings and stanchions will need to be unbolted, which can only be achieved from the inside by taking down the headlining in the aft cabin. Be aware that some may choose to cut corners by cutting around the stanchions, and only replacing the exposed teak.

A vast anchor locker set into the sunken foredeck easily swallows up large fenders and, although it is self draining, this locker seems to stay quite wet, so we would recommend checking the anchor chain for corrosion. A large hatch in the starboard side deck reveals the boat’s gas locker, and its two 4.5kg cylinders.

A protruding side step on each side of the aft cabin moulding leads up to the large aft deck area. This spacious, flat deck is enclosed around the stern by sturdy metal guardrails and vinyl dodgers. Again there is likely to be differences between early and later boats here. We know that GRP L-shaped seating deck boxes were available in sets of two as a £1292 extra during the 00’s. These are extremely useful for storage, and are placed in the corners of both the flybridge and raised aft deck levels. Be aware, these may not be bolted down to the decks. The aft deck might also be enclosed by characteristic ‘Corvette’ vinyl dodgers, which were a £470 extra in the 00’s. Finally, on much later boats the aft deck may well have been transformed into a four-person alfresco eating and entertaining area, with two inward-facing bench seats and a table inbetween.

Inspect the side door frames, as on 00’s boats these may be white painted aluminium, which can be prone to corrosion. Flaking or bubbling paintwork is often a sign of this. There are several DIY temporary options detailed on the

Corvette Motorboat Association website, but ultimately a powdercoat refurbishment as the best long-term answer.

Flybridge A central set of wide moulded steps lead up to a spacious, trawler-like flybridge.

The flybridge offers a very commanding central helm position and the forward part of this area is enclosed by an integral helm moulding, with sturdy metal guardrails (usually with vinyl dodgers) continuing aft. You will note that the helm position does not have a Perspex wind deflector that is commonplace on many flybridges.

Instead, the stylish flybridge moulding scoops and deflects the wind away from the helmsman.

Through the years there were a few different flybridge layout configurations available. Some boats will have an L-shaped seat moulding, which extends out from the port side and offers seating for three. The interior of this seating module offers plentiful deck storage and, with two large access hatches facing aft, is capable of swallowing up the largest

An unusual hull shape offers speed and seakeeping

exterior seat cushions, brushes and other deck equipment. Other boats might just simply have three identical helm seats on individual pedestals. 00’s 320’s usually have a central three-person bench seat.

The integral helm and windscreen module is quite minimalistic, but is most practical for exposure to the elements. It incorporates a full width sloping dash, with switches and dials displayed on a central recessed panel (protected by a Perspex cover) in front of the helmsman.

The throttles are usually mounted to the left. Navigation equipment, if fitted, is usually to the right of the helm. Raytheon/ Raymarine equipment was fairly common on these boats, and later sea-going boats often have an 8-inch Raymarine E80 installed here. The helm module has a hatch to allow access to the steering and instrument wiring, and also provides access to storage within the console.

Hull and Handling The Corvette, as a shaftdriven boat, has earned an excellent reputation for its stability and solid responsive handling at fast and slow speeds. Information on the seakeeping and handling of early boats fitted with V-drives and sterndrives is difficult to find, although the former shoud be almost as good, if not identical.

The 32/320 is a heavy boat, and bow trim may have been an issue in these versions, so trim tabs would be a useful feature to look out for. At the time of writing, we were unable to track down any V, or stern drive examples, and would love to hear from any owners of these aft-engined 32’s.

Essentially a semi displacement cruiser, the Corvette does have quite an unusual hull shape. It has a very broad bow with a shallow vee entry, a round bilge centreline with flat underwater sections to generate lift, and a keel for slow speed stability. At sea, these boats have very broad shoulders, confidently pushing the water and waves aside for a dry ride, and a reassuring ability to carry on at a steady pace in choppy seas. Because of their unusual shape, beamy 13ft width and very bluff bow, we understand that these boats are a little tricky to lift out of the water, with not all boatyards having a suitable crane or hoist.

The 32 also has the remarkable ability to turn absolutely flat at speed, and comes with equally impressive slow speed manouvering, although a bowthruster may offer a little extra peace of mind in windy conditions. Please note longer rudders were one of the many refinements Seacoral made to the 320 during the 90’s.

Ten years later, in 1997, Corvette Marine at Reedham were offering Volvo, Perkins Sabre and Yanmar engine options.

The five Volvo Penta options ranged from 110hp TAMD31D’s offering 12 knots and priced at £134,478, to 230hp KAMD42P’s giving 24 knots for £158,625. Next were two Perkins Sabre options, namely M225’s or M265’s giving top speeds of 22-26 knots. Top of the range were three options were available, a base engine Yanmar options, 190hp 4LHA/DTE’s option being a pair of 65hp MD31A’s priced at £185,591, 250hp 6LP/DTE’s at giving a 10-knot top speed. While top of £190,896 and finally, 300hp 6LP/STE’s at the range were twin 200hp TAMD41A’s, £192,758. Several years later 315hp 6LPA/ giving 22 knots. Intermediary options STD’s were being fitted priced at £197,576. were 100hp TMD31A’s giving 14 knots, was added to the length for improved lowspeed handling.

Most boats from the 1990’s onwards will be fitted with a stainless steel radar arch.

This was often adapted for inland use and, hinged down, gives an air draft of 3.2m, meaning it was possible for these boats to venture as far up as Oxford on the River Thames. For customers in the Channel Islands and similar areas, beaching legs, complete with a stainless steel keel band, were available at a cost of £1742.

These engines propelled the boat to a top speed of 28 knots, and proved popular in the last years of production.

Through our research we have uncovered a few ‘engine anomalies’ that were untraceable to any of our brochures and pricelists. While twin engines are common, we understand a few singleengined boats were built in the 1980’s.

Furthermore, the 1995 example we viewed was fitted with a pair of 230hp Yamaha ME 420Dti engines. While Yamaha engines were fitted regularly to many sterndrive-powered sportscruisers during the 90’s, inboard versions were seen more in the commercial sector. The ME 420 is based on a 4.2 litre Toyota engine. Parts for some of the older engines, such as the MD32’s, are becoming difficult to source, which is something to be aware of if buying an early model.

Engine access is via hatches in the wheelhouse floor. Earlier boats may simply have two hatches, which is quite limiting for access, while later boats, from the Seacoral era onwards, are usually fitted with a series of hatches, so the majority of the floor can be removed.

One owner had numbered each hatch for easier reassembly, which is an excellent idea. Access to the starboard engine is generally better than the port, although the physical size of the engines fitted will dictate how much room you have to play with. Additional access to the back of the engines is provided by a removable panel in the aft cabin.

Be sure to inspect the boat’s two 90gallon fuel tanks for leaks. We understand that mild steel tanks were used in 1980’s boats, which are known to suffer from corrosion due to salt spray being sucked into engine room vents. Consequently

some of these boats were fitted with new stainless steel tanks under warranty, or at great expense by their owners. All 320’s built by Reedham and Corvette Marine should be fitted with stainless tanks.

Conclusion The Corvette is a no-nonsense cruiser that can turn heads with its traditional good looks and, most importantly, can offer cruising comfort at any speed you wish to travel at, whether it be for inland or coastal use. Its interior is comparable to much larger boats, and its two-cabin, two-toilet layout is ideal for a couple with occasional overnighting guests, or a family with children. If you choose wisely, you’ll have a boat that will look after you now, and for years to come.

Before buying any used boat, always employ the services of a IIMS or a YDSA accredited surveyor and, if you have any doubt about the engines, a separate engine survey by a suitably qualified person is recommended.

Trevor Dann Corvette Classique I have been around boats since 1978, with my former years spent yacht racing around the cans, as well as offshore, mostly with the Royal Navy, and also instructing.

I married and we had two girls, who didn’t like tacking, so I bought my first motorboat. This was a Dutch barge style boat with single shaftdrive, which proved a bit small. I was looking for a Corvette when, after a disappointing viewing in Cornwall, I ended up with a consolation prize of a Fairline Turbo 36 called Ocean Belle. Although this was a cracking boat, it wasn’t quite right for us.

My wife insisted the next boat had to be a Corvette, to at least get it out of my system and, sure enough, in 2015 we bought a 1991 Corvette 32 Classique.

marinised bus engines.

The boat offers superb sea keeping, sensible accommodation, and an aft cabin to rival the legendary Turbo 36, complete with ensuite. For kids and dogs it has wide, safe side decks, with a two bar ‘fence’ right around the boat for freedom and safety. It will happily plod along at 8 knots in displacement mode, yet is spritely when required, with speeds of up to 18 knots. Engine parts are cheap and readily available, and no special tools are required to complete a strip-down and rebuild.

We renamed the boat Boadicea, which has its own story. For the 1991 Fastnet I skippered a Sigma 36 from the legendary Britannia Sailing School called Boadicea.

Also, when I was searching for a name, I discovered that the Royal Navy had a Bacchante Class Corvette called HMS Boadicea in 1890, so it had to be.

The Corvette certainly isn’t ‘out of my system’ yet. Myself and a fellow Corvette owner, David Morrison, have set up the Corvette Motorboat Association website for owners and enthusiasts interested in the Corvette. My goal, when I have time, is to take Boadicea around the UK, and then through the French canals to the Med.

Running a 200hp two stroke

Q Just how thirsty would an early 1990’s two-stroke 200hp outboard be? I have seen a boat I like, but have been warned that the engine will be expensive to run.

A Old technology two strokes like this one do like to

drink the fuel. A 200hp outboard of this era is likely to consume as much as 80 litres per hour (18gph) at full throttle. Driving at a more sensible cruising speed should reduce this to something in the region of 45lph (10gph).

Whichever way you cut it, an engine of this type is never going to be as cheap to run as a four-stroke, or even one of the modern generation two-strokes. Having said that, it should be cheap to buy, so that goes some way to offset the extra running cost, and then there is the sheer fun of running a big old two stroke. The acceleration and noise is something to behold, if you like that sort of thing.

Domestic water pump

Q My domestic water pump on our Broom 38 keeps briefly

running. It happens about every five minutes or so and will run for a second before shutting off again. It is driving me mad and I cannot work out why it is doing it?

A Basically, the system is losing pressure. It sounds like it is losing

it very slowly, but enough to cause the pump to run momentarily to bring the pressure back up again. First check the easy things. Are any of the taps dripping? Don’t forget to check any cockpit of transom outlets too. If not, there could be a leak in the pipework somewhere. This won’t be more than a drip, but should leave a telltale wet patch or puddle somewhere, so you will have to trace all of the water system pipework as best you can. Another possibility is a faulty pressure relief valve on the calorifier. This could be allowing a slight trickle through, which you will never see as they are usually plumbed overboard or directed into a bilge that may already have some water in it. If the latter, you can test this by putting the end of the pipe into a clean dry container and see if it collects any water. One last possibility is that the pump itself is letting water flow back. This is a hard one to test for, but you could try fitting a nonreturn valve just before the pump, which may cure this particular problem.

No fix on Belfield Chartplotter software

Q I have just installed a Belfield

Chartplotter on my laptop, as a backup to the fixed unit on my boat. The GPS receiver I am using, GlobalSat BU-353S4, is connected to a USB socket. I have a little utility program to prove that it is picking up from the transmitting satellites, and it does appear to be working as the map shows up to 12 satellite-signals being received. However, despite having been left running for a few hours, it obstinately shows ‘no fix’ in the status line. The correct baud rate is set (4800) and I must be connected to the right USB socket to be seeing satellites at all. Any thoughts why there is no fix? Does the unit need to be in motion to obtain the initial fix?

A No, the unit should not need to be in motion to get a fix, but as laptops are

not my speciality I handed this one over to Mr Belfield. Here is his answer: From your information, I think the problem lies with running the utility program. The NMEA signal from the GPS can only be received by one application at a time.

You need to ensure you have completely exited from the utility program before running Chartplotter, if you are not sure reboot the computer but do not run the utility program. Run Chartplotter, click on the menus: ‘file’ and ‘instruments’, make sure the baud rate is set to 4800 and the appropriate com port. I am pretty sure this will resolve the problem.

30 footer for single-handing and fishing

Q I want to upgrade my small outboard fishing boat to something a bit bigger

and something that I could feasible stay onboard and go cruising in, as well as fishing. The problem is that I am usually on my own and am a bit unsure about single-handing a larger boat. I am thinking about a boat of around 30ft. Is a boat of this size easy to single-hand and are some better than others?

A Single-handing is not that difficult once you get used to the idea that you

need to plan ahead and prepare for any docking maneuvers. I have undertaken many single-handed passages on boats up to 50ft without any difficulty. I usually stop just outside of the harbour, but within its shelter, to rig ropes on all corners and fenders on both sides. Then, if at all possible, find a berth where you have the elements working with you to help keep the boat where you have put it for that short period after you leave the helm but before you have a chance to get a line ashore. If conditions are a bit trickier, there is no shame in asking for help from other boaters on the pontoon, or staff at the marina. With practice and thought, any boat of around 30ft can be single-handed with ease. Having said that, there are certainly some that would be easier than others to single hand, and specifically I am thinking of those with walkaround decks and a side door by the helm.

You don’t mention budget, so I’ll gloss over that and suggest that something like a Targa 27 or 31 or a Sargo 28 or 31 would be right at the top of my list. They are all comfortable, sea worthy boats that would be a doddle to crew on your own.

Battery switch position

Q I have a boat with a pair of batteries and a switch

that allows me to choose either battery, individually, or both at the same time. What is the correct way to use this switch to ensure both batteries are always being charged, and that I don’t get caught out with a flat battery that prevents me from starting the engine?

A The ubiquitous 1, 2, both, off switch is an easy and cheap way to manage a

duel battery bank, although not the most user friendly. Assuming you have the engine start battery connected to number 1 and the domestic bank to number 2, you should start the engine with the switch set to number 1. Once running, you should select ‘both’ so that both batteries are being charged. When you are moored up, or at anchor, you select number 2 so that your domestic needs are taken care of only by the domestic battery. This means that even if you drain your domestic battery, you still have a fully charged starting battery. When you need to fire up the engine you just flick the switch to number 1 and off you go, switching back to both to recharge the domestic battery as you go. When you leave the boat you select ‘off ’ to disconnect everything. For this reason items like automatic bilge pumps should be wired direct to the battery with a fuse, rather than through the switch, so they always have power if needed.

Q I would like to venture up the Thames this summer

on my Sealine 360 Statesman. How far will I get before headroom becomes an issue? I have the removable whale tail but would prefer to keep it in place if possible.

A I assume that you also have the light mast that is mounted behind the radar tower,

in which case your air draft is going to be a little over four metres. According to the brochure, the 360 has an air draft of 3.91m so, assuming that your boat is standard, you should be fine as far as Cookham Lock cut bridge at 3.81m. Having said that, you will need to be careful passing under Windsor Bridge at 4.01m as river levels can change.

If you do lower your arch, you should be able to get all the way up to Oxford, with the lowest bridge on the way being Culham Lock Cut Bridge at 3.78m.

River picnic boat

Q I am about to move to a house

on the river and fancy getting a boat for the bottom of the garden. Not looking for anything too big or fancy, as we won’t be staying onboard. Our use is most likely going to be a visit to a pub for lunch, or a family day out with a picnic by the riverbank. What brands should I be looking at?

A This is just the kind of use that has seen a massive growth in the UK of Dutch

sloop type boats. As always, much will come down to budget. At the affordable end you have the Corsiva range. Starting with the 475 from just £12,590. If you like the idea of environmentally friendly boating, the new, Danish-built Rand Picnic with its electric motor would be a great buy. Although you have said you won’t be staying onboard, one thing that may be worth considering, especially after a pub visit, would be a toilet compartment. You would need to move up in size and budget, with boats like the Interboat 25 and 750 or one of the Waterspoor range, such as the 777 Aviator, but this will make family days out just that little more comfortable. Other brands to look out for include Antaris, which start at 5.2 metres, and Maril, which go up to 8.8 metres.

Seine formalities

Q I’m looking to cruise up to Paris this

summer. Are there any formalities or paperwork needed for cruising the Seine?

A You will need to purchase a navigation

licence, a VNF Vignette, for the non-tidal waters of the Seine. This can be obtained online via the VNF website or from the VNF office at Rouen. The licence provides 16 consecutive days and is based on the area (length x beam) of the boat in metres. You will also need an ICC and CEVNI RYA qualification. Finally carrying the Carte Guide de Navigation Fluviale’s Navicarte 1: La Seine aval du Havre à Paris is also compulsory for navigation.

When The cruise will start on the evening of Sunday the 28th of May with a pre-cruise briefing. We will return back across the Channel to Brighton on the 10th of June where the cruise will terminate.

Where This year we will be running a two week early summer cruise to the Normandy coast of France. We’ll start in the Solent and will head south across the Channel to the port of Cherbourg. From here we will take in a number of ports on the French coast. Final details are still being prepared, but destinations are likely to include Saint Vaast La Hougue, Dives sur Mer, Deauville, Honfleur, Fecamp and St Valery en Caux.

How much does it cost?

Entrance fees are ÂŁ415 inc VAT per boat regardless of size. There is no limit to the number of people onboard and no hidden costs.

Can I come?

All subscribers to Motorboat Owner are eligible to sign up. Spaces are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

Can I bring any boat?

We can accept any boat that is capable of making a cross Channel passage, has a range of at least 100NM with at least a 20% fuel margin, and a cruising speed of at least 16 knots.

ocated between Calais and Belgium on the north French coast, Dunkerque is a sheltered and impressively diverse port with a rich history. With easy access, good facilities and excellent mooring opportunities we think it is simply one of the best boating

Dunkerque began as a small town next to a natural basin, formed by a river as it flowed out to the sea. The town grew as a fishing and trade port, and with the later construction of locked basins, it was used as a base for the French navy.

Historically this part of town had a high concentration of manufacturing and maritime companies, and consequently became highly prized and a major target in times of war.

Well known and referred to as Dunkirk by the British, the port saw confusion, survival and loss during the World War II evacuation, Operation Dynamo. Here over 338,000 British and allied forces were rescued from its beaches and piers between May and June 1940. Known locally as the Battle of Dunkirk, the town

and port was all but flattened, with many navy ships in the inner basins destroyed.

77 years on, a new movie ‘Dunkirk’ is set to be released on the 21st July 2017 and shows events unfolding as soldiers become trapped in an impossible situation, awaiting rescue. Much of the film was shot at Dunkerque, and a selection of the Dunkirk Little Ships recreated their famous rescue mission as part of the film.

Today Dunkerque is the third largest port in France. It has two entrances, with commercial canals and huge docks

interlinking them. It is a place of great industry, with many trade, energy and commercial industries operating from the Dunkerque Port West. The city itself lies approximately a mile inland, and is dotted with historical and tourist landmarks. The sprawling city centre has a busy, cosmopolitan vibe, with a large shopping precinct, and an abundance of restaurants and cafes. With easy access and plentiful mooring opportunities via the east entrance, Dunkerque is more than just a useful bolthole or springboard to the inland waterways network.

Approaches

Pleasure vessels are not permitted to enter the commercial west entrance, Dunkerque Ouest, so entry is via the east entrance, Dunkerque Est, which is straightforward.

Despite being 24 hours access, we would recommend arriving during daylight on a first visit, due to its busy approaches and confusing array of shore lights.

For passages from the UK, boaters must be aware of the Traffic Separation Scheme (TSS) that operates in the Dover Strait and follow the enforced rules. Here, pleasure vessels must cross this busy shipping channel at 90 degrees. Commencing a Channel crossing at the narrowest point

at South Foreland makes for the shortest crossing time. Be aware, being a narrow channel between landmasses, the tide in the Dover Strait can be very strong. It is always a good idea to have an east going tide, wind direction permitting, as this will be carrying you in the right direction as you cross, and also as you travel up the French coast. This route also allows you to pick up the marked deep channel that Entry to Dunkerque Est is straightfoward, follow Jetee Est (east pier) pictured. Approaches from the UK east coast usually mean crossing the Dover Strait separation scheme

leads inshore of the shifting sandbanks that lie off the coast, between Calais and French/Belgium border. As you exit the separation zone you should see the two north cardinals, RCW and RCA. East of these is the safe watermark, DKA, marking the start of the inshore channel.

The marked channel crosses the approaches for Dunkerque Ouest (the west entrance), so be sure to keep a good look out for commercial traffic exiting or entering here. Dunkerque Est (east entrance) lies just under 8 miles east from here. At this point the industrial face of Dunkerque will be plain to see from seaward. With smoking or flame-topped chimneys, huge hanger-like buildings and large cargo ships inside the port basins, it is perhaps not the prettiest of approaches.

La Sirene is an interesting buoy to look out for on your approaches to the east entrance. Located approximately one nautical mile due north of the entrance piers, a scantily clad mermaid sits on top of a yellow special mark and it has become something of a symbol of Dunkerque.

In your final approach to the port you will see the lighthouse on Jetee Oust (west pier), with its distinctive red brick and decorative three-flange base. Inbound

The large Bleu Marine (0033 328639333) Uship chandlery is located in the docks in Route d’Ecluse Trystram. It is open 2-6:30pm Mondays, Tuesday-Friday 9am-12pm and 2-6.30pm and Saturdays 9am12pm and 2-7pm. Bleu Marine also offers lifting facilities with a travel hoist, and hardstanding plus engineer and maintenance services. Just yards away is Nord Yachting (0033 328212913) which is a Yanmar, Volvo Penta, Mercury, Nanni and Beta Marine engine specialist. The Grand Large marina is equipped with a slipway hoist, which has a capacity of 24 tonnes and hardstanding available.

The slipway is only accessible/used three hours before and after HW.

Where to fill up

There is a self-service, credit card operated fuel berth at the Grand Large marina, which is open 24 hours a day. This is located on the innerend of the visitors pontoon. There is a fuel berth at Yacht Club de la Mer du Nord, inside of the visitor pontoon and between F and G pontoons.

Dunkerque may look quite forbidding and industrial from seaward, but entry via the east entrance, Dunkerque Est, could not be simpler

following the Jetee Est (east pier) in a southeasterly direction. Once inside, there is a speed limit of 5 knots in the channel, docks and marina approaches. From this point, visitors are also asked to monitor the port’s VHF Channel 73 as they transit the harbour and, if necessary, contact ‘Dunkerque VTS’ for information.

If you are approaching from the west, from the coasts of Holland or Belgium, use the buoyed channel, La Passé de Zuydcoote, in your approach to Dunkerque. Again, this channel cuts inshore of the sandbanks lying off the French/Belgium border.

As you proceed down the channel, on the starboard side, you will pass the white, 59-metre high Risban lighthouse, beside which you will see the entrance to Trystram Lock. This is one of three locks

that lead into the inner port, and its many basins. Soon after on the port side is Port du Grand Large, which is the main marina for visitors. Further south east along the channel lies the Yacht Club de la Mer du Nord (YCNM), a modern lifting bridge and smaller marina for local fisherman.

The Dunkerque Marina Port Office has produced a useful virtual tour that allows you to view the entrance and various parts of the port before arrival.

Where to moor

Dunkerque Neptune is the name given to the network of marinas run by the port, offering 655 berths. These are the Port du Grande Large marina, Bassin du Commerce marina and Bassin de la Marine marina, the latter two are located

By arrangement, Trystram Ecluse and lifting bridges are timed to access the inner basins

The boulangerie/pattisserie, AlRawdha is just yards from the Port du Grand Large marina in Avenue des Bordées. The massive E-Leclerc supermarket in the Centre Marine shopping centre is absolutely superb and a 25-minute walk (1.2 mile) from the Grand Large marina. It is also just 350 metres away (4-minute walk) from the pontoon at Quai des Hollandais in Bassin du Commerce.

It is open 8:45am-7:30pm Mon-Sat. The Carrefour Express Malo Les Bains is a 22-minute walk (1 mile) east of the Grand Large marina, crossing the pedestrian footbridge over the river. This is open daily, 8am-9pm Mon-Sat and 9am-1pm Sun. A food market is held at Place du Général de Gaulle every Wednesday and Saturday.

Transport

The main bus terminal and train station is at Place de la Gare, which is due south of the Bassin du Marine.

From here SNF trains serve Lille and Paris Nord. Useful DkBus routes include route (Ligne) A to Gravelines (1hr trip), bus number 2 to BrayDunes and 8 to town from the Grand Large marina. There are good car and pedestrian ferry connections to the UK, with Norfolkline DFDS Seaways Ferries operating services to Dover from Dunkerque West and P&O operate a regular Dover-Calais route (Calais is a 40-minute/28-mile drive from Dunkerque).

Port du Grand Large offers 24hr tidal access and is on the site of a former shipyard with huge ramps

inside the locked port. However, for a visitor, the Grand Large offers 24-hour tidal access and easy access to open water.

The 315-berth Port du Grand Large marina opened in 2004 and was built on the site of a former shipyard. The marina has an outer floating concrete pontoon breakwater with entrances either side.

Leaving the breakwater to starboard, visitors use the west entrance, turning into the basin and towards the long visitors alongside pontoon seen to starboard. This pontoon is easily identified by the orange-

coloured Sauveteurs en Mer Dunkerque lifeboat, which has a permanent berth on the pontoon. There are berths for up to 25 boats alongside and rafting is to be expected in busy periods (approx three deep). The pontoon is equipped with coded security gates, shorepower, and fresh water, with a self-service fuel berth and pump-out at the inner end. The marina was dredged in 2016 and we are told that there is a minimum of 2.5 metres depth at low water springs.

On shore, the very contemporaryshaped red building is the marina office and facilities. The marina reception is open 7 days a week from 8am-12pm and 2-6.30pm and can be contacted on 0033 328632300 or VHF Channel 9. The cost of an overnight berth for a 10-metre motorboat is ₏24 in peak season.

The marina is part of the TransEurope marina network, so those berthed in affiliated marinas may be entitled to a 50% discount. Beyond the marina building is the impressive FRAC (Regional

Contemporary Art Fund) building, an art gallery that is housed in an old shipyard workshop. A yellow-coloured building houses a restaurant that overlooks the marina and the huge launch ramps of the old shipyard seen to the east.

It is quite a walk into town from the marina, approximately 25-30 minutes (1.5-mile). The best and most scenic walking route is along the waterfront, along Quais de la Cunnette and Anglais, then following roads south towards Place Jean Bart. Alternatively, you can use DKBus number 8 into town from the FRAC Gallery. There are also shops at Malo des Bains, just under a mile away.

Slightly closer to town is the Yacht Club de la Mer du Nord (YCNM). This 24-hour access, 250-berth marina is located on the starboard side of the entrance fairway and offers up to 50 visitor berths. Visitors are usually berthed alongside a long outer pontoon or within the marina itself. On site there is a restaurant and toilet and shower facilities, where showers are €1, use of the hairdryers is €1 and use of the laundry is €2. There is also free WiFi, fresh water and shorepower available. We would always recommend ringing ahead to arrange a berth, on 0033 328667990.

Dunkerque is a gateway to the French inland canal and river system. Routes via Dunkerque’s Petruis Bridge and Darse Lock provide access to the 4.5km long Canal de Furnes, the 8km long Canal de Bergues and the 21km long Canal de Bourbourg. Routes south lead to nearby Gravelines, the Somme, Seine, converging into the Saone and eventually the Rhone, which transits south to the Med. Canals branching off this to the east lead to Belgium. Be aware that all routes are subject to depth, width and height restrictions. A VNF Vignette (licence) can be purchased at the VNF office just before the next lock, Jeu de Mail. Visiting boats are usually instructed to use the Trystram Lock to enter and exit the docks. This lock, and the two lifting bridges that follow, operate to a strict timetable. However, in misty or foggy weather, the port may prohibit the movement of pleasure boats inside the port. Inbound vessels may wait temporarily on the Grand Large visitor pontoon. Once inside, there is shorepower

and fresh water available on the pontoon, and coded toilet, shower and laundry facilities available at the marina opposite, which is a 10-minute walk around the basin. Be aware the pontoon is accessible to the public, so we would recommend taking security precautions when leaving the boat. Where to eat & drink

Dunkerque has a bewildering choice of restaurants for all budgets. Being a coastal town, seafood will often feature on menus, with oysters and dishes such as moules and frites available. Also, as Dunkirk is just 9 miles from the Belgium border, Flemish-influences may also be seen.

The restaurant at the YCMN, La Table de Yachting (0033 328636733) is popular with boating visitors and locals alike.

There is also a good choice of waterfront restaurants overlooking the Bassin du Commerce at Quai de la Citadelle. These include Le Puzzle (0033 328240490) and Le Sweet (0033 328630429). Another popular restaurant offering a huge variety on its menu is Restaurant Le Edito (0033 328210101), which is at the north end of the Bassin du Commerce. L’auberge de Jules (0033 328636880) in Rue de la Poudriere and Aux Waterzooi (0033 328631270) in Quai des Hollandais are also recommended for seafood.

The paddle steamer, Princess Elizabeth, is a permanent resident in the Basin Marine and is due to open as a restaurant in June 2017. Built in 1927 the steamer took part in the Dunkirk evacuations in 1940 and will be sympathetically renovated to house the restaurant, offering ‘refined local cuisine with a British touch’.

Finally, if you are berthed at the Port du Grand Large, the on-site Le Grand Large Restaurant and Bar is a convenient place for a drink or a bite to eat. It has outside seating overlooking the marina and offers French specialities at affordable prices.

A visit to the Musee Dunkerque 1940 is a must.

Boating abroad

There are no customs formalities, although French border patrols do sometimes board vessels entering their waters. If boarded they will ask to see passports for all onboard, boat papers and ask questions about where you are going, and where you have come from.

You should carry the following with you, the boat’s insurance certificate, original registration certificate (SSR or Part 1) and, if you have it, proof of boat’s VAT status. Your national ensign (red, blue or even white) must be flown at appropriate times. You will also need a French courtesy flag, which should be flown at all times while in French territorial waters.

Places to visit

We can highly recommend a visit to Memorial de Souvenir, otherwise known as the Musee Dunkerque 1940, which is just a short walk from the Grand Large marina. Through artefacts, photography and memorabilia, it depicts Dunkerque during the evacuations of World War II’s Operation Dynamo. It is both fascinating and moving, and we would recommend watching the 12-minute film, which includes actual footage from the time. The museum itself is housed in a 19th century fortification, Bastion 32, and aptly, this served as a headquarters for the French and Allied forces during the Battle of Dunkirk and Operation Dynamo. We

are informed that the museum is being renovated to ‘double in size’ and will be re-opening in July this year. Entry is €5 for adults and free for accompanied children.

The Musee Portaire (Port Museum) is another interesting place to visit, it is located in an old trading warehouse on the Quai de la Citadelle, which overlooks the historic Bassin du Commerce. It tells the story of the port from its humble ‘fishing’ beginnings and, among its exhibits, is the German three-masted tall ship, the Duchesse Anne and the Sandettie Lightship, which was last in service in UK waters in 1989. Tickets for the historic vessels and museum are €14 for adults, children aged 7-12 years and OAPs are €12 and a family ticket is €32.

Another must-see landmark is the beautiful belfry tower, Le Beffroi de Saint Eloi in Rue de l’Amiral Ronarc’h, just to the east of the Bassin du Commerce.

Built in 1440, this 58-metre tower is open to the public via the Dunkerque Tourist Information Office, which is based on the ground floor. A lift carries you up inside the bell chamber where there is a short

Lifts up are timed to avoid bell times, which is something to be wary of when making your descent back down the small spiral staircase to the lift, as the noise is deafening. Adult admission is €3.50, children aged 7-12 are €2.50, over 65’s and students are €3 and a family ticket is €9. Season opening times apply so it is advisable to check the website for details.

The soft sandy beach and dunes of Malo les Bains, to the east of the entrance, stretch all the way to the Belgium port of Nieuwpoort and were, of course, of great significance 77 years ago for Operation Dynamo. Today it is superb place to explore or relax on a hot summers day and fantastic for younger crew members too.

Tours of the docks are available aboard the Texel, which docks at the north east corner of the Bassin du Commerce. Tours are approximately an hour and tickets are €9.70 for adults, children aged 5-12 are €7.70 and a family ticket is €30. I

n the search for a small sportsboat, the name Sea Ray would be all but impossible to avoid. They have been building boats in the US since 1959 and, although they build motor yachts up to 65ft, they are better known over this side of the pond for the sub 35ft sportscruisers and the excellent range of small sportsboats, bowriders and cuddies.

Sea Ray became part of the Brunswick Group in 1986 and sits alongside a similar range of boats at the smaller end from Bayliner. Proponents of each brand will

argue their respective merits until the ‘cows come home’, but with a slowly diverging range, Sea Ray seems to have positioned itself as the slightly more up market sibling. We take a look at one of their newest models, the 250 Sun Sport, to see if this reputation is deserved.

Initial impressions of the cockpit are good. There are acres of seating in the aft section, shaped in a large U-shape around a nice teak table, easily big enough The 250 Sun Sport has a clever knack of for six. backrest can also be set up as a rear facing lounger, or even laid completely flat, to turn it into a sun bed. The boat also comes with a small table leg that allows the cockpit table to be lowered, thus turning the whole aft part of the cockpit into a large sunbathing area. The locker beneath the starboard seat is self-draining and, in the cockpit sole, there is a decent sized wet locker. Although this is not as big as you might find on similar boats, it is plenty big enough for a wakeboard or two. Our boat didn’t come with any form of canopy, but options include a simple mooring cover or a full-on canvas package, the latter of which would prove very useful in the UK. Access from the cockpit to the bathing platform is via a step up and walk through part of the transom on the starboard side.

This part can be fitted with a backrest to complete the U shape cockpit seating, but left without, and with the corner cushion removed, it provides easy access to a very useful transom area. To start, there is a large double aft facing seat, which can also be used as another sunpad, or just somewhere to change or dry off after a

The bathing platform is huge, and comes with an under slung bathing ladder on the starboard side, a couple of low level grab handles for people in the water, a towing eye and a transom shower, which should just about cover most peoples watersports needs.

This aft facing seat, and the aft part of the cockpit seating, all lift electrically to reveal the 250’s engine room. With it fully extended, you have great access to the engine’s top, sides and aft end, so maintenance in these areas should be simple. The same cannot be said for the front, which sits tight up against a tank, meaning belt changes may be a little tricky. Our boat was fitted with the optional, and larger, V8 engine. The more compact standard 4.5ltr 250hp V6 motor should leave a little more space at the front for this important maintenance task. installation was neat and tidy, with a pair of batteries to port and the leg trim pump to starboard.

Back in the cockpit, the helm has a kind of retro feel about it. Maybe it’s the engine instrumentation with their 1970’s style

A second forward facing seat is a great feature, and offers your crew a well protected ride

shrouds that remind me of MkIII Cortina, but whatever it is, I like it. The seat has a lifting bolster and, although not full on ‘bucket’, it does have raised side supports in the base to help keep you ‘planted’ when driving vigorously. The throttle is well positioned and the helm also gets a comfy elbow rest, a cup holder and a good cubbyhole storage alongside the seat.

Everything else about the helm is well laid out, with all switchgear and controls easy to see and easy to use. One downside to the dash is that there is nowhere to flush mount any kind of multi-function display, not even a little one. If you want any more

electronics, they are going to have to be bracket mounted, which is a shame as it will spoil the rather tasteful dash design.

Opposite, the navigator gets a comfortable forward facing seat, which is a plus point, but its positioning means that the elbow rest and grab rail are more decorative than useful. Like the helm, there is a large cubbyhole for bits and bobs as well as a cup holder and a handy 12V charging socket.

To move forward, Sea Ray has provided moulded steps on the sliding cabin door and an opening section of the windscreen in the middle. Support for transiting

The cabin is reasonably spacious, with good sitting headroom, and is ideal for the odd overnight trip

this passage comes from the windscreen surround, but once you are out on deck, there is only the good non-slip surface to keep you safe. There is no pulpit rail at all, but two on-deck rails do provide something to grab hold of if you are feeling nervous, although you would need to be on your hands and knees to make use of them. On our test boat, the opening section of the windscreen had a catch to keep it secure when in the open position.

This is good, but we found it could not be released from the cockpit, meaning you have to release it as you come down from the foredeck, which takes one of your hands out of service for the important job of steadying yourself.

enough to store a couple of small fenders, if required.

Down in the cabin you get a fairly standard cuddy cabin layout. There is a twin V-berth arrangement with an infill to turn the whole cabin into one large double. Without the infill in place, the cabin provides decent sitting headroom and comes with two small opening ports and a bow hatch. The two side cushions lift to reveal lined lockers, while the locker beneath the bow is unlined and where you will gain access to the optional bow thruster, if fitted. An easily removed panel on the aft bulkhead provides access to the rear of the helm, and the electrics. At the aft end of the

cabin, a sea toilet is fitted beneath the removable cabin step.

Underway With the mid-range engine the 250 is a bit of a rocket ship. It jumps up onto the plane in under four seconds and reaches speeds of a shade under 40 knots. Considering the size and weight of the boat, it defies

Responsive, forgiving yet fun as well” the normal rules of larger sportsboats feeling a bit staid. The boat responds well to trim, and requires quite a bit to get the hull running at full speed. Set the trim right and stick the throttle at 4000rpm, and the boat will run comfortably for as long as the fuel lasts. You don’t even need to trim in when turning, as the hull grips superbly and handles a bit of chop with ease. Mid range pick up is good, with brisk acceleration whenever a bit more speed is required.

The driving position is good, whether seated, where the screen offers great protection, or leaning against the raised bolster, where your head is above the top of the screen for a wind-in-your-hair experience. Visibility is excellent when Motorboat Owner © Digital Marine Media Ltd

seated or leaning, although when leaning, the top of the screen is just about in your line of sight as the bow rises, until the hull is properly on the plane. The screen comes with just a single wiper on the helm side, which does a good job of maintaining visibility in spray or rain. The navigator’s seat is quite low down, which means it is well protected behind the screen and yet still retains good visibility forward. The screen protection doesn’t stop at the helm though; it offers good wind protection for most of the cockpit, with only the transom seat really getting any wind when motoring.

In short, the 250 Sun Sport is very easy to drive. It is responsive, forgiving, composed and confidence-inspiring. It feels akin to driving an expensive sports car.

Conclusion The 250 Sun Sport does everything that you would expect and, despite being nearly 26ft in length, it doesn’t lose much in the way of sportiness or responsive handling. So, does the Sea Ray justify its premium reputation and price? Put simply, yes. Look closely at the materials used and you do see where some of those extra pounds go. Get behind the wheel and the higher cost is quickly forgotten. A Mercedes and a Mondeo will both get you to where you are going, but with the former you just know that the extra cost was money well spent, and it feels like this with the Sea Ray. It’s hard to put my finger on it, but the Sea Ray 250

The 250 Sun Sport is a fun and easy boat to drive

Sun Sport does seem to be in a league above some of its US rivals. In fact I would put it in the same class as some of the prestige Scandinavian models, and that is no faint praise.
