EDITORIAL

Welcome

to boom time. According to the latest industry sales statistics (VFacts YTD August), Australia has just posted its fourth consecutive month of record sales and its highest August outcome on record. Light commercial vehicles were strong contributors to the healthy August total. Sales of utes and cab/chassis 4X4s rose by 23 percent over the same month last year, and two-wheel-drive models increased by 2.7 percent. In total, the light commercial market rose by 2793 vehicle sales (16.7%), and the heavy commercial vehicle market increased by 451 vehicle sales (16.0%) versus August 2016. Diesels remained the preferred engine of choice among light commercial buyers during August. Sales of diesel engine light commercials to private buyers rose 26.3 percent, while diesel sales to non-private light commercial buyers rose 18.8 percent compared with the same month last year. The top selling vehicle of any category was the Toyota HiLux, followed by the Ford Ranger in second place.

When you delve down into how some manufacturers support their products and follow up on sales leads, it’s fair to assume that each manufacturer would make a major effort to attract fleet sales. Admittedly, there might be less profit mark-up in a business fleet sale than in a private sale, where the vehicle can be loaded with accessories plus a finance package, but it’s here the profit to the dealer might come from a different source, such as through service and maintenance agreements. A recent conversation with a leading finance and leasing specialist revealed that some manufacturers completely ignore the opportunities available from selling to fleets.

DELIVERY

P6-7 Editorial DEL74.indd 6

There are similar blockages in place when you look at product support through the service and maintenance departments of many dealerships. In many instances the service and maintenance options available from a dealership are organised for the benefit of the dealership, rather than the customer. Service departments that close at 5:00 p.m. don’t have any regard for the business or fleet user. Service options need to be sufficiently flexible to enable rosters to provide evening or weekend servicing for commercial vehicle operators. Loan vehicle options also need to be tailored to provide a commercial vehicle of a similar kind to that being serviced, not replacing a ute or panel van with a hatchback.

“provide a commercial vehicle of a similar kind to that being serviced, not replacing a ute or panel van with a hatchback”

The sales game is all about having the right product in the right place at the right time and at the right price. Out of the total 155,553 light commercial sold in the first eight months of this year, 46,258 went to private buyers and 94,395 went to business buyers. Government sales accounted for 10,383 and rental companies took 4517 vehicles.

6

They have no fleet policy, no fleet manager and basically no interest in representing their products to fleet customers. This is all potential profit opportunity, but because of their blinkered approach and preoccupation with selling to private buyers they leave this area untapped and unserviced.

When buying a commercial vehicle for business or fleet use it pays to look at what service support is available and whether it fits in with your working regime. Dealerships that are linked to heavy commercial vehicles almost universally provide service options that are out of normal 9:00 to 5:00 Monday to Friday timing. It’s feasible therefore for the vehicle to be dropped off at the end of a working day and collected either later in the evening or early the following morning, ready to start work again. As more operators maximise vehicle availability in their fleets, the need for flexible service options could totally change the buyer relationship with a supplying dealer. Removing the need to hire in replacement vehicles because of a more convenient maintenance option has the effect of reducing total operating costs. There is also the opportunity for the dealership to benefit from exposing the customer to its latest product range by loaning a newer version as a temporary replacement. Providing a small rental or loan operation using the commercial vehicle fleet also solves the problem of a VOR (vehicle off-road), when awaiting a non-stocked part, and reinforces the commitment of the dealership in supporting the customer.

The current emphasis in the mainstream media on moving the vehicle buyer to alternative fuels would suggest these options are increasing as more customers adopt these technologies. The statistics tell a different story, with the private light commercial vehicle buyers opting for seven LPG-fuelled vehicles versus 3872 with petrol power and 42,379 with diesel. In the non-private light commercial vehicle segment, the figures are 8954 for petrol, 100,314 for diesel and just 1 for electric.

If your information on the latest exotic prestige car, or even run-of-the-mill passenger sedan, comes from a publication that possesses a history of automotive involvement, such as Wheels or Motor, then the advice supplied has a substantiated and solid source. Writers that cut their careers reporting for national newspapers or specialist motoring magazines, or providing informed commentary for TV and radio, established their own levels of credibility as they shared their knowledge, enthusiasm and ability.

When it comes to analysing the countries of origin for vehicle imports of all categories to Australia, the globalisation of the auto industry becomes very apparent. Thailand, also known as the Detroit of Asia, has supplied 195,541 vehicles this year to our market, most of which are utes and cab/chassis derivatives. Japan still leads with 227,937 vehicles, Korea sent us 117,092 vehicles, and Germany provided 60,222 vehicles, the USA some 33,716 vehicles and England came in with 23,739 vehicles. With over 27 countries involved, it’s easy to understand how local vehicle manufacturing wilted against the pressure from overseas.

How many readers have even noticed the names of the web writers that revel in their five nano seconds of fame before their six paragraphs of confusion disintegrate into the ether, where they remain lost and largely forgotten, remembered only by advertising agencies looking for a short sentence of product reinforcement that can be used in brand advertising?

In our December issue we will be reporting on which vehicles gained the approval of Delivery Magazine’s judges in our annual evaluation of ability and performance. It used to be the case that winning an award was a prestigious event. The Best of the Best, Numero Uno, Ichiban or whatever the language of choice, the winner was judged by experienced and qualified members of the industry based on a knowledge of the technical aspects and abilities of the products under scrutiny. Then came the world of the website, where any member of the public, whether qualified or totally ignorant of the industry, could register a domain name and achieve a public voice. The explosion of websites covering the motor industry is a particular case in point, as the reader has no way of knowing whether the appraisal of the vehicle appearing on the web is based on any technical assessment. In many cases it remains unclear whether the commentator can even drive with any level of skill, or has a background in the auto industry based on having worked in or around the motor vehicle in its various stages of transformation from design sketch to final production. What many of the websites have in common is the announcement of some award process, designed to attract advertising from the manufacturer in question as a means of supporting the originator of the website as they sit at home at their kitchen table with their laptop. And hereby lies the second problem. If the viewer pays nothing for the access to the website, the revenue can only be accrued through a financial involvement of the advertiser, suggesting that the apparently unbiased, true reflection on the abilities of the product, as espoused by the web writer, may not exactly match that definition.

The gaggle of today’s web writers (and here I struggle to use the descriptor of motoring writer), has, in the main, left the commercial vehicle industry alone. The necessary requirements of the appropriate class of truck driver’s licence has diverted the web writers’ attention away from comparing vans, light, medium or heavy trucks, people movers and buses, none of which can be drifted with enthusiasm around Eastern Creek Raceway. But the plethora of awards issued by the web writers have in the main destroyed the value of a “Best of Breed” award, leaving this accolade now largely meaningless. For the past 14 years, Delivery Magazine’s team of experienced truck writers, together with the assistance of some of the nation’s leading fleet managers, has rigorously evaluated and compared competing commercial vehicles in each marketing segment to produce a winner. For 2017, that all changes. From now on, the Delivery Magazine judgment will be based on the assessment of the technology and innovation applicable to the vehicles available on the Australian market. For 2017, the Delivery Magazine Technology and Innovation Awards will recognise the achievement of a select few of the manufacturers that bring to the Australian light commercial vehicle market a range of products that stand out from the crowd in terms of excellence. All will be revealed in the December issue. Until then, thanks for joining us, stay safe and enjoy the drive. Kind regards,

Chris Mullett Managing Editor/Publisher.

espite the years of being subjected to the “Not so Squeezy” ad campaigns of Mitsubishi Fuso, being squashed between big blokes on a narrow seat is neither glamorous, nor even remotely pleasant.

Aussies are actually a race of LARGE people, and fitting in workers with bulging biceps and shoulders the width of a pickaxe handle is never to produce a comfortable result. Unless of course you aim for the latest breed of people movers for workers – the crew van. In place of an unrestricted cargo area, the crew van usually features a false bulkhead midway in the cargo space, mounted behind the sliding side doors and screening off the rear. That keeps the cargo or tools of trade in a safe compartment at the rear, while offering comfortable seating for three across the vehicle, accessed by the sliding side doors. At the smaller end of the market sit the Volkswagen Caddy Crewvan and Renault Kangoo Maxi Crew. Renault kicks off with the 1.5-litre, turbocharged diesel Kangoo Maxi Crew at $29,490 with a six-speed manual transmission. There’s no additional rear bulkhead but the three-seat centre row cleverly folds flush into the floor, enabling the Kangoo to be a real dual-purpose vehicle carrying goods or people or a combination of the two. Payload is 750 kg, fuel economy is 4.7 l/100 km. Renault Australia’s Light Commercial Vehicle division is to introduce an automated transmission for the Kangoo diesel for the first time, before the end of 2017.

CREWS CONTROL

The two-pedal turbo-diesel Kangoo will use a similar sixspeed Efficient Dual Clutch (EDC) automatic transmission as fitted to the 1.2-litre petrol-engined Kangoo, launched in Australia in February this year. The six-speed EDC is an automatic dual dry clutch transmission. The ideal gear for any driving condition is selected automatically by an electronic control unit. Gearshift control is of the ‘P-R-N-D’ type, plus an ‘up/ down’ ‘manual’ shift mode. A push forward on the gear lever directs the transmission to downshift, a pull backwards to upshift.

The Renault Kangoo diesel EDC is a swift shifter, thanks to an ultrafast shift time of just 290 milliseconds. The transmission’s ‘creep’ control also makes life easier in crawling traffic, pulling away gradually when the brake pedal is released. The EDC transmission also offers Hill Start Assist as standard, ensuring safe starts on an incline when partnered with the creep control system. The Kangoo EDC’s 81 kW/240 Nm of power and torque from the 1.5-litre diesel engine offers an ECO Mode, cutting fuel consumption by up to 10%. When activated via a switch beside the handbrake, ECO Mode modifies the management of the gearbox ECU (Electronic Control Unit), enabling gearshifts at lower rpm.

FEATURE

As with the entire Renault Kangoo range, the diesel EDC variant will be offered with a three-year/200,000 km factory warranty and three-years of roadside assistance. Service intervals are annual or every 30,000 km and Renault’s cappedprice servicing means the first three scheduled services cost only $349 each at any Authorised Renault Dealer, nationwide. Caddy is powered by a 1.4-litre, TS1220 petrol four-cylinder with 92 kW and 220 Nm of torque, matched to a sevenspeed DSG transmission. Fuel economy is ranked at 6.0 l/100 km and it can be optioned with various seating options from two, three, four, five or seven seats. As the seats increase in number, the cargo area decreases accordingly.

The Kangoo is the pick of the small crew-van segment. Next up for the medium segment it’s Renault Trafic Crew at $46,780, versus Mercedes-Benz Vito Crew Cab at $52,720 and the Hyundai iLoad Crew at $40,790. The best fit-out is undoubtedly again in the lap of Renault, but it loses on points through not having an automatic transmission option. In terms of value for money the Hyundai iLoad romps home with appeal. Mercedes-Benz scores through having the highest safety levels, best driveline and seven-speed auto to return 6.4 l/100 km.

TRADIE TIME 4x2 UTES

Delivery reviews the 4x2 ute market and finds a world of difference facing the average tradie. (Words Stuart Martin)

T

here’s something to be said for a genuine workhorse, and the 4x2 segment has less family truckster about it - these utes are all about work.

The 4x2 marketplace race has tightened but remains led by HiLux in this segment, ahead of the Ford Ranger, both recently facelifted but still sporting the same fundamental line-up. The Ranger model line-up starts and finishes at XL – available in single, super and dual-cab guise, but when looking at the cab/chassis format the only powerplant on offer is the updated 2.2-litre, four-cylinder diesel, producing 118 kW and 385 Nm with a six-speed auto or manual. The XL is priced from $27,690, or $31,190 for the Hi-Rider version, and we spent some time with the latter in manual guise. This sits on 16-inch steel wheels with 70-profile tyres, but still manages to deliver a solid ride on the road – a heavier-duty suspension with a bigger payload potential (1480 kg versus 1265 kg on the 97 mm shorter low-rider) is the likely culprit, but once a few hundred kilograms hit the tray you’d expect it to settle down nicely. Comfortable seats within a decent work-oriented interior accommodate the driver and passenger well, but the plastic steering wheel (albeit with sound, voice control, trip computer, phone and cruise controls) is something of a letdown. There are two 12-volt outlets (although not in the dash top storage area), a USB input and Bluetooth within the Sync system to call emergency services automatically after an accident, provided the phone is connected. The updated manual gearbox has a new gearshift linkage for a much-improved gear change, and the 2.2-litre certainly feels up to the task, without being as brawny or greedy as its 3.2-litre sibling, claiming 6.8 l/100 km fuel use (although it was in the 8s during our drive, which is about where the ADR claim for the bigger engine sits) on the ADR fuel consumption combined cycle. 14

“The last of the Holden Commodore utes will have left the Elizabeth factory, marking the end of an era”

TRADIE TIME Extra cabin space is a feature of the XL Super Cab (although it is six-speed auto-only) for $35,890, while an extra $2000 buys the dual-cab version. Ute buyers can have the 2.2-litre engine in XL single ($29,190) or double-cab for $37,190, but anyone wanting the beefier 147 kW/470 Nm 3.2-litre in-line five-cylinder is restricted to the pick-up body style. It is offered in XLT Super Cab for $47,790, and the Double Cab surprisingly asks $200 less, but both models get access to the optional (at $800) XLT Tech Pack that includes adaptive cruise control with forward collision alert, driver impairment monitor, plus lane-keeping and lanedeparture warning systems. At the other end of the spectrum is Foton’s Tunland range, which now kicks off at $26,990 for the dual-cab ute (there’s no longer a single-cab option), with power coming from the 2.8-litre Cummins 130 kW/365 Nm Cummins turbo diesel.

This Chinese sourced one-tonner comes with a 2.5-tonnes braked towing capacity, offering only the five-speed manual gearbox to drive through the rear wheels via a Dana rear limited slip differential. The absence of an auto will limit its appeal for a further 12 months before a rumoured auto joins the ranks. Great Wall has returned with a revamped Steed, offered only in a dual-cab body but with a 100 kW/205 Nm twolitre petrol or 110 kW/310 Nm 2.4-litre turbodiesel model – the latter is $26,990 and the former is $24,990. A leather-wrapped reach and rake adjustable steering wheel, front, side and curtain airbags and power-adjustable driver’s seat are on the features list but there’s no auto on offer yet. No longer a dominant force in the ute market, the last of the Holden Commodore utes will have left the Elizabeth factory as you read this, marking the end of an era. Prior knowledge of its demise, plus a relatively low towing capacity of 1600 kg and payloads below 900 kg before occupants inhabit the cabin, have reduced its workhorse appeal.

4x2 UTES

The Commodore range starts in six-cylinder six-speedauto-only guise for $33,490 and that buys 210 kW and 350 Nm, with the SV6 priced from $37,190 for the automaticonly model. The high-performance SS – powered by the 6.2-litre V8 and on offer in standard six-speed manual and automatic – is priced from $43,990 with top spot occupied by the 6.2-litre 304 kW/570 Nm V8 SSV Redline for $52,490. With the SSV Redline comes a sportier FE3 suspension tune, 19-inch alloy wheels, rain-sensing wipers, Brembo brakes, tyre pressure monitoring, leather trim, lane departure and forward collision warnings. Despite the tradie look, these are basically sports cars with very big boots, as the payload is less than 600 kg. HSV’s Maloo starts from $79,990 and also falls into that category, putting fun into function with a supercharged 6.2-litre V8 offering 400 kW and 671 Nm, but you’d better get in quick if you want one of the final models. Those in the market for a worker will find the Holden Colorado, which is offered at a pinch under $30K for the LS single-cab/chassis at $29,490 or $34,490 for the fourdoor Crew Cab; it has a new nose covering the same 147 kW/470 Nm six-speed auto (440 Nm with the six-speed manual) drivetrain.

The vinyl-floored LS is standard with the lower-grade MyLink Apple CarPlay/Android Auto touchscreen infotainment system (but with no integrated satnav), with digital radio, a USB input and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Safety features include seven airbags, rear parking sensors and reversing camera (on ute models at least), stability control and a rear limited-slip differential. The ute-bodied models only run from here up, with the LS dual-cab asking $35,990, rising to $38,990 for the LT, which adds fog lights, side steps, 17-inch alloys and carpet flooring. The 4x2 range stops at the LTZ crew cab, which wears a price tag of $42,490 and gets the top-spec MyLink, its own satnav, climate control, power-adjustable driver’s seat (which needs a greater range of adjustments), autodimming centre mirror, 18-inch alloys, rain-sensing wipers, heated exterior mirrors, forward collision, lane departure warning and tyre pressure monitoring systems. Isuzu has updated its D-Max with a refreshed drivetrain, improving emissions and outputs while bolting a six-speed automatic to the upgraded 3.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder.

4x2 UTES

Like the Ranger, Isuzu offers its entry-level SX cab/chassis in low and high-ride variants, starting at $28,500 and rising with the extra clearance to $31,700 – it is an old-school workhorse that feels as though it can get the job done in a relaxed manner, with a one-tonne payload and 3.5-tonne braked towing ratings. It has a leather-wrapped steering wheel and Bluetooth but the noise and refinement falls short of the opposition now.

There’s a 2.5-tonne braked towing capability for the Pik-Up (they’re coy about a braked towing capacity for the Genio), but the absence of an auto and relatively anaemic looking outputs make these a tough sell. In reality, the Genio punches above its weight, even at maximum payload.

The space-cab ute is offered only in the higher-riding model and only with an automatic transmission, asking $35,500 for the useful space behind the seats.

Mazda’s BT-50 4x2 range kicks off with the single-cab XT for $25,570, the only model powered by the 110 kW/375 Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder that it shares with the Ranger.

The SX is also offered in a dual-cab ute – $34,500 for the lower-slung model or a high-ride version asks $38,000; the dual-cab/chassis model is offered for $37,300.

Everything else is propelled by the 147 kW/470 Nm 3.2-litre five-cylinder, starting with the XT single-cab for $28,815 or the Freestyle cab asks $32,745; add exactly $2000 for the dual-cab.

Mahindra has single and dual/cab models on offer in both the Genio and Pik-Up range, with an 88 kW/280 Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel, coil-sprung front and leaf-spring rear suspension, one-tonne payloads but only a five-speed manual gearbox on offer – the former starting at $20,990 and the latter from $19,990.

18

DELIVERY

ISSUE 74

The ute bodystyle is only offered in two variants and both are powered by the 3.2-litre five-cylinder – the XT dual-cab is priced from $36,545 and the XTR is priced from $41,630. In time the next generation Mazda will result from a product sharing agreement with Isuzu Ute, ending the link with Ford.

TRADIE TIME entry-level workhorses are, by and large, leaf-sprung under the rump and a single-turbo diesel engine, starting from $25,990 for the single-cab/chassis RX model. Sampling this model in manual form, the RX offers strong outputs buried beneath a gruff manner that’s slightly on the noisy side. Not as refined as its twin-turbo sibling further up the range, the Navara’s single-turbo’s 120 kW and 403 Nm is at the pointy end of the segment for output and pulls cleanly from low revs, as well as sipping at the diesel very gently for its efforts, claiming 6.4 litres per 100 km. It offers good vision and decent rear vision mirrors, as well as a clean gearshift action on the six-speed manual. The ride quality for this level of Navara is better than the segment average, suggesting a well-sorted rear leaf spring that can still carry a decent payload – 1359 kg, the best of the single-cab models.

Mitsubishi’s Triton is seen by many as the best value for money in equipment terms, if not outright capacity for towing or payload. The range is all GLX model spec – six-speed manual, vinyl floor, air conditioning, reach and rake steering adjustment for the plastic wheel, helm controls for sound system, phone and cruise control, 16-inch steel wheels, dual front, side, curtain and a driver’s knee airbag, a reversing camera (with a genuine tray) and stability control. It claims a 1.3-tonne payload, an 1800 kg braked towing capacity, front disc and rear drum brakes, coil front end and a leaf-sprung rear – starting with a 94 kW/194 Nm 2.4-litre petrol single-cab/chassis for $22,300. The same designation in a 133 kW/433 Nm 2.4-litre turbodiesel asks for $25,800, with the option of a fivespeed auto, but it drops in payload to 1165 kg, although 1800 kg braked towing in the petrol is beaten by the 2500 kg rating for the diesel.

The cabin is work-ready with cloth trim and vinyl flooring, but it’s not completely devoid of features – a plastic steering wheel feels a little cheap but has controls for sound system and phone, there are three 12-volt outlets (including a handy one in the dash top tray) and a USB outlet, as well as Bluetooth, stability and traction control, five airbags (front, side and one for the driver’s knee) and automatic headlights (but no rain-sensing wipers). It is also available in a King Cab model that adds a proper amount of space in the rear at a starting price of $28,490. Dual-cab buyers in the Nissan showroom are restricted to ute bodystyles (at least in 4x2) and that line-up starts with the RX at $32,990, with the ST model slipping in at $39,990 with the more powerful 140 kW/450 Nm twin-turbodiesel engine, a reversing camera, 16-inch alloy wheels, satnav, LED headlight and daytime running lights, a leatherwrapped steering wheel and an auto-dimming centre mirror. The top-spec 4x2 model is the Navara ST-X at $44,990. That asking price adds 18-inch alloy wheels, poweradjustable driver’s seat, leather trim, heated and folding exterior mirrors, dual-zone climate control, keyless entry and ignition, carpet floor mats, rear parking sensors, a tubliner and Nissan’s Utilitrak load restraint system. The revamped Toyota HiLux is top of the 4x2 heap and has a wide choice of petrol and diesel engines on offer in its all-one-tonne 4x2 workhorse line-up.

A dual-cab ute body is offered in Triton GLX guise for $36,000 but only in a diesel-auto combination. The features list is similar to the cab/chassis models as payload drops to 975 kg but it pulls a maximum braked trailer of three tonnes hanging off the rear.

The Workmate cab-chassis in 122 kW/245 Nm 2.7-litre petrol form is priced from just $20,990 for a single-cab with a five-speed manual or optional six-speed auto, but rises to $30,690 for a dual-cab.

Nissan’s Navara was revamped with a Series 2 model update, which included major coil-spring rear suspension revisions that were first mooted as required by Delivery magazine when the NP300 Navara first appeared. The

There’s also the 110 kW/343 Nm 2.4-litre turbodiesel engine – only with five-speed manual transmission – in cab/chassis single-cab for $24,990, or a Workmate dualcab ute for $33,990.

Standard fare includes air conditioning, cruise control, power windows, seven airbags, stability control, a reversing camera, reach and rake steering adjustment, vinyl flooring, 16-inch steel wheels, Bluetooth and audio controls on the steering wheel.

Volkswagen’s recent Amarok upgrade introduced the V6, but that engine isn’t in a 4x2 yet, where the power comes from the 2.0-litre bi-turbo diesel 132 kW/420 Nm four-cylinder, driving the rear wheels via an eightspeed gearbox.

The SR model range is offered in 130 kW/420 Nm 2.8-litre turbodiesel in five-speed manual single-cab/chassis priced from $28,490, or there’s an SR 175 kW/376 Nm 4.0-litre petrol dual-cab auto that remains on the price list at $41,990.

The 1901 kg dual-cab/chassis TDI420 version is priced from $38,490 and the TDI420 dual-cab ute starts from $39,990.

Ute bodystyles are also available in HiLux SR guise, priced from $35,490 for the extra-cab, $39,990 for a dual-cab, and offering premium cloth trim, carpet flooring, chrome door handles and seat height adjustment among its list. The range tops out with the SR5 dual-cab for $47,890, with 18-inch alloys, LED headlights, climate control, leatherwrapped steering wheel, satnav and digital radio among its features. All are offered with the 130 kW/450 Nm 2.8-litre turbodiesel with the six-speed auto, dropping to 420 Nm when there’s a clutch pedal. 20

With a 3.0-tonne braked towing capacity, fuel use of 8.4 l/100 km is served by the 80-litre tank, and with room for a pallet between the wheel arches it adds to Amarok’s claims to fame. The features list has dual front and front side (but not curtain) airbags, stability control and an electronic diff lock, USB input, Apple CarPlay/Android Auto, Bluetooth, a trip computer, rubber flooring and heated power-adjustable exterior mirrors. Surprisingly, given the height of the ute body, there are no rear sensors or camera as standard, while auto wipers and headlights, and fog lights are also optional.

2017 AfMA Fleet Awards

CELEBRATING EXCELLENCE The AfMA Fleet Awards seek to identify advances in best practice in Fleet Management and to bring these to the attention of its members and the industry.

Over 140 people gathered at Doltone House on September 14 for the 2017 AfMA Fleet wards. The night was a great opportunity to network with like-minded industry professionals and to acknowledge environmental, safety and overall leaders within the fleet industry.

Since their introduction in 1996 the awards have recognised new approaches and applications that have produced substantial reductions in costs, lowered emissions and improved safety outcomes.

Drawing attention to advances in fleet management techniques, the application of technology, fleet safety and raising awareness of the fleets impact on the environment, the Awards have inspired many to begin their own voyage towards best practice.

TRENDY TRADIES’ TRAVELLING TOOLBOX T

o suggest there’s been solid growth in the LCV 4x4 dual cab segment of the Australian new vehicle market is akin to suggesting the Coalition has a mild dislike of alternative energy options.

The multipurpose machine that tows both tools and toys, dependent on the day, as well as potentially carting kids to school and tradies to the site, has exploded in popularity due to better road manners of the various contenders. The market leadership battle is a two-horse race – the new champ from the Blue Oval against the long-reigning monarch from Toyota. So far this year, in the 4x4 market HiLux is lagging behind the top-selling Ranger, but it’s still daylight to the thirdplaced Triton. The Australian-engineered Ford Ranger, recently facelifted but still sporting the same fundamental line-up, has some models asking top dollar for the Blue Oval privilege. The diesel cab/chassis line-up is all XL – like the rear-drive range available in single, super and dual-cab guises, with the 118 kW/385 Nm 2.2-litre four-cylinder and 147 kW/470 Nm 3.2-litre five-cylinder on offer under the beefier facelifted front. They come with a standard rear diff lock, Bluetooth phone system with emergency assist, stability control, front and side airbags, a reversing camera and sensors (on the ute models) among the range-wide features. 22

The XL single-cab starts from $39,090 (a sizeable jump from the entry-level 4x2 model), or $41,590 for the fivecylinder model. A workhorse XL Plus Single is offered for $46,790 with dual batteries, canvas seat covers and 17inch wheels (up from 16s) as standard fare. Additional room behind the front seats is one of the benefits of opting for the XL Super Cab for $44,090 or forking out another $2000 will add full rear doors. There’s also a 2.2 double-cab on offer for $43,590. Aim for a ute-bodied Ranger and pricing starts at $45,090 for the 2.2-litre engine in XL dual-cab, or another $500 buys the bigger engine in XL super-cab guise. The more powerful 3.2-litre in-line five-cylinder is the only choice above that, with the XLS dual-cab asking $48,890, an XL Plus dual-cab workhorse demanding $53,290, the XLT dual-cab wearing a $55,490 price tag and the Wildtrak flagship starting from $59,590. The top-spec Ranger gets rain-sensing wipers, climate control, tyre pressure monitoring, auto-dimming mirror and the full safety list of adaptive cruise with collision warning, lane departure warning and auto high beam. Alphabetically close but worlds away is the 4x4 Foton Tunland range. It is the only ute powered by a 2.8-litre Cummins diesel (a 130 kW/365 Nm) and is only offered as a dual-cab, starting from $29,990 with 2.5-tonne braked towing, one-tonne payload, and a rear LSD, but no auto.

Delivery Magazine delves into the growth of the offroad load carrier for the recreational tradie – Stuart Martin reports

Great Wall trotted back into the Australian 4x4 ute segment on the back of a Steed, which is offered only in a dual-cab one-tonner body style. It has some merit in terms of cabin comfort and features, as well as a workable low range, but only a 110 kW/310 Nm 2.0-litre turbodiesel, 171 mm of ground clearance and a manual gearbox for $29,990. The Holden Colorado underwent a major front-end overhaul, with suspension, steering and transmission tweaks being among the changes beneath the revamped snout – and it has given the Thai-built workhorse more to brag about than just cost. Pricing is still something the Colorado has in its favour. The LS single-cab/chassis starts from $37,490, rising to $40,990 for a space-cab and the four-door will set you back $43,490 for the crew-cab. Vinyl flooring is standard in the LS, as is the entry-level MyLink infotainment system on a seven-inch colour touchscreen, with USB input and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Safety features include seven airbags, rear parking sensors and reversing camera (on ute models), stability control and a rear limited-slip differential. Only the ute-bodied models are offered from here up, with the LS dual-cab asking $44,990, rising to $46,990 for the LT, which adds fog lights, side steps, 17-inch alloys and carpet flooring.

The LTZ range starts in a space-cab for $48,990 or the dual-cab wears a $50,490 price tag, with the Z71 priced from $54,990. Power and torque went unchanged from the 2.8-litre turbocharged four-cylinder – 147 kW and 500 Nm (but only from 2000 to 2200 rpm) with the auto, and 440 Nm (across 1600 to 2800 rpm) when teamed to a manual. What has been revamped is the interior, with a MyLink touchscreen control system, full smartphone integration as well as its own satnav and digital radio reception. Road manners of the LTZ tested are much improved, showing the benefits of involving the Colorado’s Australian engineering team with nicely-weighted steering, reasonable ride and load-lugging prowess with 3.5-tonne braked towing and 1.0-tonne payload for much of the range. Rear disc brakes would be nice – the Amarok V6 has them and so does the Great Wall Steed (guess which one doesn’t really need them) – as the Holden can feel a bit underdone in the stopping department with a load on board. Former GM bedfellow Isuzu has updated its D-Max with a refreshed drivetrain, improving emissions and outputs, while bolting a six-speed automatic to the upgraded 3.0-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder.

We spent a bit of time in the LS-T and it maintains its role as “Old Faithful” with a relaxed demeanour from the 130 kW/430 Nm 3.0-litre turbodiesel, albeit one that’s on the noisy side.

Its entry-level 4x4 model is the EX cab/chassis starting from $34,800, with the price rising to $38,000 for the SX in the same single-cab/chassis guise. The SX space-cab/ chassis model starts from $40,700, with the more luxurious LS-U also on offer in space-cab form for $46,200.

The leather-trimmed cabin is showing its age but has been given a lift with a touchscreen satnav infotainment system, and its 3.5-tonne towing capacity, genuine 1.0-tonne payload, five-year warranty, roadside assistance, cappedprice servicing and a solid reputation for getting the job done keeps people going their own way with the breed.

Dual-cabs also start in an SX model, asking $43,200 for a cab/chassis and another $700 for a ute, which is all that’s available for the rest of the Isuzu Ute range. The LS-M is priced from $46,400, an LS-U is $48,300 and the top-spec LS-T asks $54,200.

A stint behind the wheel of the base-model cab-chassis 4x2 does remind occupants of the D-Max’s veteran status – it still gets the tough towing and lifting jobs done and the engine and automatic upgrade were welcome, but the Isuzu is starting to lose touch with the top players in the field.

of an auto and relatively low outputs make this one (like Foton and Great Wall) a tough sale. Mazda’s BT-50 shares plenty under its less-appealing snout with its more-handsome cousin, the more expensive Ford Ranger, until its deal with Isuzu for a replacement eventually bears fruit, but, unlike the 2WD range, the 4x4 utes are all propelled by the impressive 3.2-litre five-cylinder engine.

Mahindra has single and dual-cab models on offer in both the Genio and Pik-Up range, with an 88 kW/280 Nm 2.2-litre turbodiesel, 1.0-tonne payloads but only a five-speed manual gearbox on offer for a starting price of $24,990.

The entry-level single-cab/chassis XT starts from $36,850, rising to $40,815 for the roomier Freestyle cab, while $2000 more will buy the dual-cab. The ute bodystyle skips the single-cab and starts with the XT dual-cab for $44,615, with the XTR Freestyle model priced from $47,675.

alloy wheels, climate control, upgraded centre screen and trim tweaks), while the GLX+ club-cab model asks $38,500. Seen by some as the best value of the Triton range, the GLS provides the upgraded 4WD system, improved infotainment with full smartphone integration, xenon headlights, leather steering wheel and 17-inch alloy wheels. The Exceed starts from $48,000 with auto headlights and wipers, rear diff lock, front seat heaters, and an autodimming rear mirror among the highlights. Nissan’s Navara had a Series 2 model update that included major revisions to the coil-sprung rear suspension that were first mooted as required by Delivery magazine when the NP300 Navara first appeared. The entry-level workhorses are by-and-large leaf-sprung under the one-tonne-rated rump, with front, side and a driver’s knee airbag as well a single-turbo 120 kW/403 Nm turbo diesel engine with six-speed manual or seven-speed auto, starting from $31,990 for a DX single-cab/chassis and $32,990 for the RX model on 16-inch steel wheels with remote keyless entry, a rear window demister, but retaining the plastic steering wheel.

the flagship GT gets digital radio, power-adjustable driver’s seat, heated exterior mirrors, and leather trim among it extras, and sits at $51,790. It is a strong package but misses out on some of the active safety features introduced to the Ranger in the last update, and its warranty (a two-year unlimited-kilometre warranty that can go to three years, but is then limited to 100,000 km) is not up to segment average. Mitsubishi’s Triton is seen by many as the best value for money in equipment terms – the Exceed flagship is priced from $48,000 when much of the segment dwells well beyond $50K in top-spec guise, or in the case Ford and Volkswagen a $60K price tag is on the standard bearer. It is not up to some of the competition for outright capacity in towing or payload terms, but the Triton is well equipped, quiet and deceptively capable – it is one of the few that has reach and rake steering adjustment and the ability to select all-wheel-drive on the bitumen. The 4x4 range is powered only by the frugal 2.4-litre turbo diesel (133 kW and 430 Nm) with six-speed manual or five-speed auto, anchored by the GLX 2.4 single-cab/ chassis for $32,500, or the same designation in a clubcab model asks $35,300, while a dual-cab ute GLX starts from $36,250. Ute body shoppers start with a GLX dual-cab from $37,000, the same asking price for the GLX+ model (which adds

Dual-cab buyers are restricted to ute body styles in all bar the $36,990 RX cab/chassis, with its ute equivalent priced from $39,990. The SL priced at $43,990 retains the cheapfeeling plastic steering wheel and cloth trim, but improves on the infotainment front with six speakers and a larger screen; there’s still no touchscreen or nav but the driver does get manual height adjustment. The SL’s payload slips just under a tonne (987 kg) for the suspension that has been toughened up (not completely to the detriment of the ride quality), with braked towing capacity unchanged at 3.5 tonnes. The more-refined and muscular twin-turbo 140 kW/450 Nm powerplant starts in the SL dual-cab model and above, providing a more refined soundtrack as well as better outputs, frugal fuel use and a more civilised delivery via the seven-speed auto. It also powers the ST, which slips in at $46,990. The top-spec model is the ST-X at $51,990, and it gets leather trim, satnav, heated seats, dual-zone climate control and a leather helm among its highlights. The revamped Toyota HiLux has returned to form at the front of the sales pack and has petrol and diesel engines in its 4x4 workhorse line-up, although the vast majority sold are diesel burners. The SR kicks off the dual-cab line-up with a 4.0-litre petrol V6 that is auto-only at $48,490, rising to $56,390 for an SR5.

“The multipurpose machine has exploded in popularity due to better road manners of the various contenders” The diesel cab/chassis 4x4 line-up starts with the 110 kW/400 Nm 2.4-litre turbodiesel (with six gears in manual or auto form) in the WorkMate single for $36,990, or the extra-cab rises in price to $40,490.

Dual-cab utes start from $43,490 for the TDI400 Core (an auto adds $3000), while the Plus ups that to $47,490 with the addition of carpet flooring, automatic headlights, rainsensing wipers and 17 (up from 16) inch alloy wheels.

The up-spec SR is equipped with the 130 kW/420 Nm (450 Nm in the six-speed auto) 2.8-litre turbodiesel and is priced from $39,490 in single-cab or $44,490 for two rear doors and more space in the cabin. Of note is the manual (despite a 30 Nm handicap) tow-rated to 3500 kg, while the auto’s braked towing capacity drops to 3200 kg.

A 3.0-tonne towing capacity, near-1.0-tonne payload and the ability to sneak a pallet between the wheel arches are among the Amarok’s claims to fame.

Ute body styles in diesel form start with a WorkMate 2.4 double-cab for $43,990, with the SR raising the stakes to $44,490 for the extra-cab or $44,490 for a dual-cab with the 2.8-litre turbodiesel. The flagship 4x4 is the SR5, which in extra-cab is $52,390 or $54,390 for the SR5 dual-cab, and a rear diff lock, reversing camera (standard on the bulk of the ute range), satnav and digital radio reception are among the standard fare. Volkswagen’s Amarok is a class leader for refinement and car-like road manners, but the arrival of the V6 has overshadowed the still good 132 kW/400 Nm four-cylinder models, which start in dual-cab/chassis guise for $41,990 for the TDI400 Core manual, rising to $44,990 for the TDI420 Core eight-speed auto.

The 165 kW/550 Nm V6’s arrival has given the Amarok the sort of punch for which it has always been yearning, and it needs the four-wheel discs to haul it in – the Sportline starts from $55,490, rising to $59,990 for the Highline and leaving the Ultimate as the flagship for now at $67,990. The big Volksy has been lauded for the reach and rake steering adjustment, infotainment inclusions, genteel road manners and quiet cabin, but lambasted for the absence of curtain airbags, limited legroom aft and none of the automatic emergency braking systems that appear on its passenger cars beyond multi-collision brake, which doesn’t stop the initial impact. There’s no easy pick for a winner in this segment, but, if someone was going to leave one in my driveway, it would be the V6 Amarok.

THE VAN MAN V

isitors to Sydney airport can gain an immediate impression of the importance of the van segment to the courier market simply by walking past the huge DHL courier depot located adjacent to the domestic terminal. It’s a hive of activity as dozens of yellow beelike Ford Transits of varying size hover around the site, collecting and delivering packages for the airlines.

DHL is part of one of the largest logistics companies in the world, but there are many such courier, PUD (pick-up and delivery), and logistics companies in Australia – and they all rely on the humble van to keep their businesses buzzing. A total of 16,602 vans have been sold on the Australian market in the first eight months of 2017 (VFACTS 2017), forming part of the total light-commercial vehicle market that rose by 12.8 percent in August. With workplace health and safety, duty of care and chain of responsibility now holding prime places in Australia’s commercial environment, it is no longer acceptable to put drivers in anything less than the safest vehicles. The major players vying for medium-van business are Mercedes-Benz, Volkswagen, Hyundai, Renault, Ford, LDV and Toyota, while IVECO’s and Fiat’s mid-roof versions of their large vans manage to just slip in to this segment. 30

DELIVERY

Rob Randazzo and Brenton O’Connor review the small to medium van sector Fleet buyers are now almost universally going for vans with diesel engines and automatic transmission, a trend that some light-commercial vehicle manufacturers have been slow to address. Sales figures (VFACTS) for 2017 to the end of August for medium vans show the Toyota HiAce van leading the segment with 34.3% of the market (4924 sales), followed by the Hyundai iLoad with 28.7% (4127 sales), the Volkswagen Transporter 9.4% (1352 sales), Renault’s Trafic with 9.0% (1290 sales), Ford’s Transit Custom 6.3% (900 sales), the Mercedes-Benz Vito 5.5% (794 sales), LDV’s G10 5.0% (724 sales), and the LDV V80 1.7% (241 sales). Sales of the Fiat Ducato and IVECO Daily vans totalled 687 units and 158 units respectively, covering both long and short-wheelbase versions – some of which would not fit into the medium-van category. If you are looking for a small load-lugging van, your choice will come down to Citroen, Suzuki, Fiat, Renault or Volkswagen. However, with 81.4% of sales for the first eight months of 2017 (VFACTS) going to Volkswagen (56.2% or 1301 sales) and Renault (25.2% or 583 sales), it would be fair to say the other brands are unlikely to be on fleet buyers’ shopping lists. In the medium-van segment, Ford’s latest version of the Transit Custom has a new engine with a six-speed auto transmission driving the front wheels. This model recently jumped from fifth position for year-to-date sales (6.3%) to fourth position for August with an increase to 10.1% of the month’s sales (VFACTS) – and a 3.4% increase on August 2016 sales. The larger Transit 350L has also increased sales volume, and these sales boosts can almost certainly be attributed to the six-speed auto option in both vans.

THE VAN MAN

There’s much to like about the new six-speed automatic Transit Custom, including a new, more powerful Euro 6 engine, reduced fuel consumption, stop/start technology, extended service intervals (12 months or 30,000 km), a payload of 1035-1334 kg (depending on model), dynamic stability control with rollover mitigation technology, and an impressive cab with full bulkhead and seating for three. Hyundai has always had an auto in its iLoad, and it has been a popular medium-van choice over recent years. It continues to be fit for purpose and perform well, but it has not progressed as far as some of the competition in offering a five-star safety rating like the Transit Custom and Vito, or more ratios in the transmission to bring fuel economy level in line with the more frugal competitors – iLoad has five ratios, while six is common, with Vito and Transporter offering seven and the Daily offering eight-speeds. The iLoad (8.8 l/100 km), HiAce (8.7 l/100 km) and LDV G10 (8.6 l/100 km) are the thirstiest vans in the segment, compared to the Vito (6.1 l/100 km), Fiat Ducato MWB (6.7 l/100 km), which just sneaks in to the medium-van

category, and the manual-only Trafic (6.2 l/100 km). The new Transit sits midway with a combined-circuit fuel usage of 7.2 l/100 km. LDV’s G10 van was full of surprises when tested earlier in the year, but lower levels of fit and finish, higher fuel consumption, lack of an ANCAP rating and unknown parts and service reliability will weigh in heavily against the G10’s lower initial pricing when contemplating total cost of operation. Toyota’s HiAce retains market leadership in the mediumvan segment, yet it is the second least fuel-efficient, has basic seating for the driver and just one passenger (both sitting over the engine), its three-year/100,000 km warranty has the shortest service intervals of six months or 10,000 km, it produces the second highest levels of CO2 emissions and the least torque, has the lowest payload (SWB – 955 kg), and, like the Chinese LDV, has only two airbags to earn the HiAce just four stars in ANCAP rating. Toyota’s strong service network underpins its sales performance – but for how long? DELIVERY

Volkswagen’s 2017 Transporter has not yet received an ANCAP rating, but, with six airbags (equal to the Vito and Transit Custom), fleet buyers and private owners have kept the T6 model as the third most popular van in the segment – just! In August, Australian buyers bought fewer Transporters than Trafics and Transit Customs, and Volkswagen dropped from third to fifth in the sales race (VFACTS). The Transporter still uses Volkswagen’s seven-speed dual-clutch DSG auto transmission, which has not been a favourite of Delivery Magazine. It is shame that the T6 has not inherited Amarok’s brilliant eight-speed ZF auto as used in the Daily. Vito is Mercedes-Benz’s commercial entrant in the mid-size van segment, and is one of the safest and most fuel-efficient light-commercial vehicles on the road. With a full five-star ANCAP rating and a fourcylinder Euro 6 turbodiesel that produces 100 kW at 3800 rpm and 330 Nm at 2400 rpm, the Vito 114 CDi Delivery tested punched well above its weight thanks to a superb seven-speed auto transmission driving the rear wheels. This is a true one-tonne van with is payload of 1130 kg, and it will tow a braked trailer weighing 2500 kg if need be. The Vito only has seating for two, but you can be confident they will both get where they are going safely. The medium-wheelbase IVECO Daily 35S17A8 V van with a cargo volume of 12 cubic metres is bordering on the large van segment, but due to the huge 16 cubic-metre model competing higher up in the range it gets a nose into the medium sector. This big IVECO has much to offer, and is a vast improvement over previous models. The cab provides a comfortable environment with its suspended and heated driver’s seat, excellent forward visibility, reversing camera, full bulkhead, big touchscreen for GPS and reversing camera, numerous storage spaces and dual passenger seating. Our test van had the optional higher-output 3.0-litre Euro 5 engine that produced 125 kW at 2900-3500 rpm and 430 Nm at 1500-2600 rpm through an efficient eight-speed auto transmission to turn the rear wheels. The dash-mounted selector was not a favourite with any test team member, and some had issues with limited seat adjustment, while others had difficulty with side-mirror adjustment. Another common comment was about overly light steering that gave a slight floaty feel. The 35S had a token 400 kg load in the capacious cargo area, but this was only a fraction of its 1565 kg payload limit and did not hinder this big van’s progress in any way. Fiat’s long-wheelbase mid-roof Ducato 180 is another van that hovers between the large and medium-sized van segments.

THE VAN MAN

The smallest Ducato has a cargo volume of 8.0 cubic metres and payload of 1605 kg, but Delivery’s test van was 13.0 cubic metres with a 2145 kg payload, which was even bigger than the IVECO, and it is packed with comfort and safety features. Last year’s testing highlighted the Ducato’s extremely hesitant sixspeed automated manual transmission and it remains a negative that outweighs the positives of this van. With seating for three in the comfortable cab, a strong torquey engine (130 kW/400 Nm) that complies to Euro 6 emission standards, huge cargo area volume and payload, competitive price and funky European design, this van should be a top-seller – but it needs to follow IVECO with the adoption of the ZF eight-speed automatic. The final van in the mid-sized category was the most talked about van (for all the right reasons) by the test team – the brilliant Renault Trafic. Also available as a standard van with the option of a single-turbo (66 kW/260 Nm) or a twin-turbo (103 kW/340 Nm) diesel engine, the version tested this year was the LWB crew-cab, twin-turbo version. Trafic comes with a clutch pedal and a manual gearbox, rather than offering an auto option, and this situation is unlikely to change until mid next year. This omission alone is stopping the Trafic from launching a true challenge on the mid range segment.

FEATURE Our crew-cab had seating for six (including the driver) and still had room behind the full bulkhead for 4.0 cubic metres of tools, toys or parcels, as long as you did not exceed the 1118 kg payload. The Trafic was a pleasure to drive, and with a six-speed manual it pulled well. Styling, inside, and out, is European and classy, and the RRP of $42,990 (before on-road costs), four airbags, exceptional fuel economy (6.2 l/100 km), long service intervals (12 months/ 30,000), standard-fit reversing camera and ability to carry the crew and their gear, will keep the Trafic climbing up the sales ladder. Purchase decisions from within the small-van market are a far less complicated task, as there are realistically only two options – Volkswagen’s Caddy or Renault’s Kangoo. The Caddy actually created the small-van market, and continues to dominate sales (more than twice the Kangoo sales), even in the wake of Dieselgate. It is a great little van that offers a number of options and configurations ranging from a SWB manual 1.2-litre turbo petrol producing 62 kW and 160 Nm of torque, right up to the TDI250 Maxi auto with its 2.0-litre turbodiesel that pumps out 75 kW at 4000 rpm and 250 Nm of torque from as low as 1300 rpm right up to 2800 rpm. Prices range from $24,990 driveaway, up to $35,990 (plus on-road costs) and both the 1.2-litre petrol and 2.0-litre diesel use less than 6.0 litres of fuel per 100 kilometres (5.9 and 5.3 respectively) – the 1.4-litre petrol TSI220 is the thirstiest of the range with consumption of 6.2 l/100 km. The Maxi has seating for five and a maximum load volume of 4.13 cubic metres, while the smallest caddy variant will carry the driver, one passenger and 3.2 cubic metres of cargo. Renault’s Kangoo is the up and coming contender in the small-van segment, and, while sales are well below Caddy’s, they are on the rise. Delivery’s time in SWB, auto, 1.2-litre Compact was a pleasant surprise. While it is the spartan version, able to carry 3.0 cubic metres and 540 kg payload, it was comfortable and functional. As this model does not have a bulkhead, there was some noise intrusion from the cargo area, but it was not overly obtrusive. A simple frame behind the driver’s seat would provide some protection if needed, but mesh reinforcement between the bars would be safer. The six-speed dualclutch auto performed well, and helped keep consumption and emissions at Euro 6 standards, with fuel usage of 6.5 l/100 km. The 84 kW/190 Nm petrol engine was more than capable of keeping up under all traffic conditions. Renault is set to become the light-commercial vehicle manufacturer to push the boundaries, and the one other manufacturers will need to watch. LARGE VANS “More than a box on wheels” was a slogan used some years ago by Mercedes-Benz, and it rings even more true today when you consider the various options from van manufacturers. All bar one are European in origin, with the odd one out hailing from China. Fiat Chrysler Australia (FCA) sells its Ducato MAXI in two roof heights, and in four wheelbase lengths, producing cargo volumes that range from the low-roof short-wheelbase with 8.0 m3 of capacity through to the extra-long-wheelbase mid-roof which can carry 15 m3 of cargo. Corresponding payloads are from 1525 kg through to 2145 kg. Pricing for the base model van in short-wheelbase, midroof guise and a manual transmission is $38,990. As with all variants of the Ducato, a full torque converter automatic is not available; however, Fiat offers a six-speed automated manual (AMT). Fiat’s warranty includes coverage for a period of threeyear/200,000 km and service intervals of 24,000 km mean less time in the workshop and more time on the road. The tow capacity of 2500 kg should satisfy most users. In the same large-van segment, Ford offers its Transit VO, now with a new six-speed torque converter automatic transmission joining the six-speed manual. Now very much back in the race, the new transmission offering will broaden the appeal of the big Ford to owner-drivers and fleet operators alike.

The service intervals are a relatively short at 15,000 km and the standard warranty offering provided by Ford is threeyear/100,000 km. However, the Transit has the ability to offer up to 3500 kg of towing. IVECO’s Daily comes in three distinct ranges, with each providing a variety of wheelbase lengths and roof heights. The Daily is unique, providing a choice a sixspeed manual or ZF’s eight-speed automatic torque converter transmission. The 35-130 (which defines the gross weight and the engine horsepower) is available in three different wheelbase lengths with low and medium roof options. The carrying capacity varies from 9 m3 and 1630 kg of payload, through to a 16 m3 and a reduced payload of 1475 kg. Stepping up to the bigger offering, is the 50-170 that can be rated for either a car or a light truck licence with the higher GVM. Offered in three wheelbase lengths and two different roof height options (medium and high roof), cargo capacity again is varied, with 12 m3 and 2062 kg for the mid-wheelbase and medium-roof variant, through to 1804 kg and 20 m3 of for the biggest version. IVECO also offers a 150 kW (210 hp) option with even more spirited performance.

There are two variants of the Transit that meet our classification for a large van due to their legal payload capacity. The 350L mid-roof has a carrying capacity of 11 m3 and a payload of 1295 kg. Stepping up to the bigger variant, the 470E Jumbo dual-wheel, the carrying capacity increases to 15.1 m3 and 1946 kg of payload. Pricing for the smaller of the two begins at $47,680 and bumps up to the $54,180 for the 470E.

MORE THAN A BOX ON WHEELS 38

DELIVERY

ISSUE 74

MORE THAN A BOX ON WHEELS Service intervals on the Daily range are an impressive 40,000 km, and the warranty is again three years/200,000 km. Towing capacity is 3500 kg. The Chinese manufacturer LDV offers its V80 as an alternative to those looking for a large van to purchase at a reduced price, and is available in both a five-speed manual and a six-speed automatic gearbox and a diesel engine producing 100 kW. The V80 is available in two wheelbase lengths and in three roof-height offerings. Carrying capacity begins at 1204 kg of payload and 6.4 m3 of volume, through to the largest offering that provides up to 1389 kg of payload and 11.6 m3 of cargo volume. The LDV pricing starts at a low $30,490, which will appeal to the price conscious buyer. LDV is backed by service offerings of 15,000 km and warranty is three-year/100,000 km. Given its relatively new entry to the Australian market, LDV remains an unknown quantity until it establishes some bona fide credentials Mercedes-Benz hits the Aussie large van market with its Sprinter range, which to put simply, is hugely extensive! Up for grabs are four different power ratings, including both four and six-cylinder engines varying in power from the base model with 70 kW through to the 3.0-litre V6 engine that produces 140 kW. The Sprinter range is available in a choice of either a six-speed manual or Benz’s own 7G-TRONIC seven-speed torque converter automatic. Buyers of the V6 variant only get the automatic transmission version.

The base model 310 CDI, starting at $44,490, is only available in the standard wheelbase length and offers two roof-height options. When moving up the range to both higher power and heavier payloads the choice broadens. Here the Sprinter is available in four wheelbase lengths ranging from a short wheelbase through to the extra-long wheelbase, while roof heights range from standard height and high roof through to a super-high-roof option. Cargo volume ranges from 7.5 m3 through to 17 m3, with payload options from 1235 kg to 2510 kg dependent upon the model selected. Given the complexity and varying options available, a potential purchaser needs to spend time with a trained sales executive in order to select the model best suited to the customer’s requirements. Mercedes-Benz has been renowned for its industry leadership when it comes to safety, and the Sprinter is no exception. The Sprinter has and continues to be the market leader when it comes to both active and passive safety. All Mercedes-Benz vans include three-year/200,000 km warranty and service intervals are 25,000 km. The braked towing capacity of 2000 kg is lower than some of the competition, reducing appeal for those who need their van to tow heavy trailers. Renault comes to the large van market with its Master range and both front and rear drive options, dependent upon the model. All Master’s feature the same 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel delivering a respectable 120 kW. Two transmission choices are on offer and include a six-speed manual and Renault Quickshift – which is a sixspeed automated manual. With a van range that spans 8 to 17 cubic metres, and payloads from 1.6 to 2.2 tonnes, there’s a Master to suit most applications. Pricing kicks off at $43,990 for the short-wheelbase front-wheel-drive variant. The Master has service intervals of 30,000 km and warranty is on par with other manufacturers at a very respectable three-year/200,000 km. For those needing to tow with their van, the 3000 kg towing capacity of the Master ticks the box.

LARGE VANS Similar to the Sprinter, the outgoing Volkswagen’s Crafter will soon be replaced with an all-new model with a range of power, wheelbase, and roof height offerings. The current majority of the Crafter range is powered by a 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel, with power outputs ranging from 80 kW through to 120 kW, and there’s also a fivecylinder option available on selected variants. The model replacement will be sourced from a new factory in Poznan, Poland, and will feature an automatic transmission for the first time. Until it arrives, the current Crafter is only available with a six-speed manual transmission.

Pricing commences at $45,500 for the base model TDI300 mid-wheelbase standard roof height. When it comes to carrying capacity, the Crafter can carry between 1297 kg and 2210 kg of payload, and for volumetric loading the Crafter range carries from 9 m3 on the mid-wheelbase through to 17 m3 of the long-wheelbase variant with high roof and extended overhang. Volkswagen offers a three-year unlimited kilometre warranty and the service interval offering is 30,000 km.

“With options such as blind-spot assist, crosswind assist and collisionprevention assist, the Mercedes really takes safety to another level.”

MAXIBUS APPEAL

With three major players to shift higher volumes of passengers, the choice for the buyer has never been better.

M

inibuses by their very nature have never been exciting, or even in some cases pleasant to drive. Forever the compromise between providing seating for people and storage space for luggage, the Japanese-style rectangular boxes that pass for passenger transport are uncomfortable, unwieldy, and unresponsive on the road and basically nasty things to drive. They are, however, cheap. Stepping up in stature and ability brings the buyer to consider only those models that are available with an automatic transmission, being the IVECO Daily, the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter and the Renault Master. Two out of the three feature full-fluid automatic transmissions, with the odd man out being Renault which offers a six-speed automated manual as its choice for those that want the vehicle to do the gear shifting for them. 42

Slated for launch before the close of 2017, the Daily Minibus comprises three model variants and two seating capacities: 11 plus driver and 16 plus driver. IVECO Bus national manager – ANZ, Steve Heanes, said the initial dealership appointments provided strong coverage for the Daily Minibus across most areas of Australia. “All Daily Minibus dealerships appointed to date are either existing IVECO full-line or light-duty dealerships – this provides us with over 25 outlets across Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia and Western Australia,” Mr. Heanes said.

ISSUE 74

22/9/17 8:08 pm

MAXIBUS APPEAL “The Daily Minibus uses the same underpinnings as the Daily van and cab/chassis ranges, meaning that these dealerships will be well versed in diagnosing, servicing and supporting the Daily Minibus range when it arrives”. Mr. Heanes said this was the first time dealerships had been appointed to sell IVECO Bus models, but, given the retail nature of the minibus market, it was a logical decision to utilise the IVECO Network. “Buyer demographics for the Daily Minibus are quite diverse – we envisage that these vehicles will enter service in applications including airport and hotel shuttle work and related, as well as for medical-based applications including patient transport,” he said. “The platform is flexible and provides for straight forward fitment of lifts and wheelchair access equipment for use in disabled transport and for aged care facilities”. On offer in the range is a powerful yet fuel efficient Euro-6rated engine rated at 180 hp and 430 Nm, a class-leading eight-speed full automatic transmission and the convenient electric bus plug door. These features are complemented by a wide array of active and passive safety equipment including front and rear disc brakes with ABS and Electronic Stability Program.

IVECO’s ‘ESP9’ safety package is also standard and includes a myriad of other safety features such as electronic brake force distribution, anti-slip regulator, drag torque control, hill hold control, adaptive load control, trailer sway mitigation, hydraulic rear wheel boost, hydraulic fading compensation, roll movement intervention and rollover mitigation. Further adding to the safety equation is a driver’s airbag, daytime running lights, a steering wheel with integrated controls, pneumatic suspension and a lane departure warning (LDW) system. The Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Transfer Minibus is a firm favourite with Delivery Magazine, and although now nearing its due date for replacement, it still maintains its competitiveness across this segment of the market. With drive-away pricing of $66,490 (until 31st December 2017), this 12-seater is based on the Sprinter 313 and comes with a dual front passenger seat as standard, plus a remote operated powered left-side sliding door and a slide-out step to improve access and egress. It comes with some important safety “smarts”, such as cross-wind assist, front SRS airbags for driver and passengers, Bluetooth and touchscreen infotainment, a multi-function steering wheel and daytime running lamps.

“Stepping up in stature and ability brings the buyer to consider only those models that are available with an automatic transmission”

PEOPLE MOVERS Optionally available are collision prevention assist, high beam assist, blind spot assist, and lane keeping assist, reversing camera, integral satnav and the highly capable 7G-TRONIC PLUS seven-speed fluid automatic transmission. There are more options to consider than an Australian politicians election promise, including whether to chose from a medium height or high roof alternative, plus clever safety benefits like window airbags, plus high capacity rear air conditioning. Power comes from a 2.2-litre, four-cylinder, in-line turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine with 120 kW at 3800 rpm and peak torque of 360 Nm rated at 1400-2400 rpm. Like the Daily, this is a rear-wheel-drive model, but whereas the Daily is running at Euro 6 emissions levels, the Sprinter is back with the pack running at Euro 5 levels. With ride and handling ability being exemplary, Sprinter is a pleasure to drive with low interior noise levels, easy access and egress for passengers and plenty of headroom to avoid bumps when moving about the interior. And now we come to the Renault Master Bus, with a factory built 12-seater (including driver) that’s based on the Master L3H2 long wheelbase. The front-engined, frontwheel-drive format enables Renault to keep the floor height down low, meaning fewer steps to enter the saloon area. At 2.47 metres, the roof height provides plenty of headroom for those entering or leaving the bus, and there’s no compromise, with 1.88 metres of interior cabin floor to ceiling dimensions. Additionally, with an overall length of 6.2 metres there’s plenty of cargo space available to prevent the need for towing a luggage trailer. Access into the cargo area is though two full-height and full-width barn doors at the rear. These open out to provide full access, and with suitable racking and a cargo barrier fitted behind the rearmost seats it will be possible to store luggage safely on different levels. The seating configuration is based on a front left and centre seat alongside the driver, followed by three rows in the rear in a two-seat, three-seat and finally four-seat layout. Each seat is finished in a cloth trim, is capable of reclining (except for the rearmost row), and features lap/

sash three-point seat belts. Two of the seats are also fitted with ISOFIX mountings for child restraints. Today’s traveller expects immediate communication options, and adjacent to each seat is a double USB point for charging phones and tablets. An auxiliary air conditioning unit in the rear looks after high demand heating and ventilation requirements, and there are LED strip lights blended in to the side panelling for ambient lighting, in addition to the main cabin lights. The side windows are also fitted with curtains. Access into the main passenger area is via an electrically operated plug-type side door, and as this opens it triggers a slide-out step. There’s a high specification of additional features available through two option packs, the Premium Pack and the Lifestyle Pack. The former adds automatic headlamps, an enhanced satellite navigation system, hands-free remote key, premium carpet on the floor, USB sockets adjacent to the passenger seats and the powered plug-type door. The Lifestyle Pack adds leather seat trim, an alarm, auto headlamps with rain sensing wipers, lane departure warning plus the USB sockets, carpeting, powered sliding door and enhanced satnav. Renault has adopted a common mechanical specification for all versions of the Master Bus with a 2.3-litre, fourcylinder, Euro 5 emissions rated turbocharged and intercooled diesel engine. Producing 110 kW at 3500 rpm and with peak torque of 350 Nm rated at 1500 rpm, this engine is a willing performer. The shift protocol of the six-speed AMT provides smooth and well-calculated ratio swaps with none of the surge and decline feel of early AMTs when they changed gears. We’d still suggest starting from rest by using the handbrake to promote clutch engagement feed as this provides a more positive feel to the selection of first gear engagement, without any accompanying time lag as the gearbox apportions power to the front wheels. Maintenance intervals are at 30,000 km periods, cappedprice costs for the first three scheduled services are $349.00 each, and it’s backed by a three-year/200,000 km warranty extendable for four to five years and with 24-hour roadside assistance.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE The Mercedes-Benz van range is unmatched throughout the LCV market

A

s people movers go, the Mercedes-Benz V-Class V250d is probably the most expensive way to cart a crew from A to B, but it’s also doing it in a style befitting the $87,155 price tag.

The V250d takes much of the Vito’s mechanical package – a 2.1-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder, albeit offering in this guise 140 kW/380 Nm, a claimed 6.3 l/100 km thirst (we saw an average of 8.6) with the standard seven-speed auto – and cloaks it in a sharp three-piece suit. The good bits of the bus range carry over, including the comprehensive safety package topped by the crosswind assist function within the stability control, front, side and full-length curtain airbags, tyre pressure monitoring, auto emergency braking and rain-sensing wipers among them. The German manufacturer’s passenger-car influence extends to the seven-seater (there’s an option for eight) 46

DELIVERY

ISSUE 74

with V-Class receiving the centre stack and dashboard to upgrade the front of the cabin to levels similar to the C-Class passenger car range. Other niceties include an electric park brake, LED adaptive headlights with high-beam assist, ambient interior lighting, illuminated exits, optional 19-inch alloy wheels and a 15-speaker Burmester sound system. Power adjustment for the heated front leather seats is on the doors, à la the passenger car range, and the centre screen now sits atop the dash, rather than being integrated into the dashboard. The tablet-style centre screen positioning is not to all tastes, but it controls phone, digital-radio-equipped infotainment and car systems via a touchpad and roller wheel, the Benz version of BMW’s iDrive.

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE It displays the view of the 360-degree camera system to good effect, making those tight private-school carpark manoeuvres easier, with parking sensors and poweradjustable, heated and folding power mirrors also involved. For an alert driver it should be near impossible to come into contact with anything detrimental to personal or mechanical welfare. Both rear doors are power-operated, but dash-mounted buttons for the driver or pillar switches for those trying to disembark, make school or airport drop-offs simple. Both rows of leather-trimmed seats get ventilation and storage pockets in the doors, but only the third row gets easy access to a 12-volt outlet – there’s one on each side. Both rows of seats feature fully-integrated seatbelts and are able to slide to tailor legroom and loadspace to the passengers or the available cargo. The powered rear tailgate covers a split-level boot with a luggage divider system that swallows a reasonable loadspace, but it won’t rival the Transfer bus for swallowing a stack of suitcases.

In a world where workplace safety is paramount, putting your office on wheels means the safety of your transport is paramount, and nowhere are you going to find a safer trade transport than Vito 114 CDI. While not the most recent arrival in the segment, it remains the yardstick, and with a price tag of $46,400 this Benz van still brings high functionality to the segment. The van was lightly laden – well short of its 1130 kg payload – but enough to show the ride quality prefers some weight in the cargo bay with an assured confidence that it could happily carry the bulk of its maximum payload all day without complaint. The 2.1-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder is found under the bonnet in much of the Benz workhorse van range, and in the Vito guise it produces 100 kW and 330 Nm, usually bolted to a six-speed manual gearbox.

The test vehicle had been upgraded to include the sevenspeed automatic, which adds $2614 but doesn’t manage to add a left-foot footrest as part of the deal. The cabin is a comfortable and well-executed workspace – storage binnacles in the dashboard, as well as door pockets and in-dash storage, with the optional three-seat bench and bulkhead in the test vehicle, the latter keeping noise from the cargo bay to a minimum. The rear load bay is accessed from a sliding side door on each side, as well as the rear door. In the evaluation Vito the lift gate had been replaced with the optional (at $650) barn doors for easier forklift loading into the 3.0 m long load space. A reversing camera and sensors at both ends make it easy to get the 5.4 m long and 1.9 m wide Vito in and out of tight spaces. Driver aids are amplified by the test vehicle’s optional Driver Assistance Package which adds – for $1455 – collision prevention, blindspot and lane departure warning systems, as well as rain-sensing wipers and a leather-wrapped steering wheel.

The Valente MWB is the working-class cousin of the V250d and shares much mechanically with the sharper-dressed luxury people mover, albeit with a greater similarity of appearance to suggest it could double up collecting airport customers rather than kids from the private school. That’s not to say the Valente isn’t able to cart crew, kids or cargo in any number of different combinations to good effect, as this model is remarkably capable of performing in dual roles of people mover and cargo carrier. Again powered by the 2.2-litre direct-injection turbodiesel (that’s Euro 6 compliant) and producing 120 kW and 380 Nm, the latter from 1400 through to 2400 rpm, the drive is directed to the rear wheels via a smart seven-speed auto transmission.

Frugal fuel economy results – a claimed 6.3 wasn’t quite matched but it didn’t stray into double digits – results in a good range from the 70-litre tank, with the transmission not hunting through the gears while making good use of the torque spread on offer. The Valente makes do with the LCV-standard small-screen infotainment system with a width of 5.8 inches to handle Bluetooth and USB input, and can still carry an optional (at $818) satnav system. Its design is pre touchscreen technology, which is a little old school these days. Ride quality can be a little abrupt when empty, but once a few behinds are in situ on some of the eight seats, and there’s a load in the rear, the Valente rides with aplomb and is far from a barge when bends are involved. The rear glass has no scope for movement and the ventilation isn’t as comprehensive as that in the V250d, but the two rows of seats can be moved and folded (or removed) to deliver a comfortable and spacious passenger area, as well as swallowing a solid load of cargo. A good turning circle deployed by reach and rake adjustable steering, parking sensors at both ends and a reversing camera make manoeuvring the 5.14 m long 1.93 m wide people-mover a relatively easy task through tight city streets, with good-sized power-adjustable, folding and heated exterior mirrors. A safety features list with front, side and curtain airbags and the stability control system, includes (but is by no means limited to) the useful crosswind assist. 48

The long-serving Sprinter van is not surprisingly starting to show its age in some respects, but the veteran status doesn’t diminish the secure driving experience delivered by the $50,859 van, which just topped $60,000 with options. Despite its generous dimensions, the near-six-metrelong Sprinter 316 MWB CDI as tested is not difficult to manoeuvre at slow speeds and provides the driver with light steering, dual-pane mirrors with rear parking sensor indicators and reversing camera (part of the $1495 parking package), and temperate throttle response all add up to easy carpark work. The driver sits upright and has a good view forward (only marred by reflections of the dashtop) through a tall glasshouse, with reach and rake adjustment for the plastic steering wheel but no left footrest, the latter cheapening the cabin feel a little, although the presence of satnav (even on a small screen) offsets that to some extent. The dashboard is equipped with myriad storage areas, with more in the doors and overhead. It also has a walk-through to the cargo area between the two comfortable manually adjustable bucket seats. Traversing metropolitan roads, the ride quality is on the firm side when lightly laden with 200 kg, well short of its 1470 kg payload, with eight cargo tie-down points to secure the load. Out on the motorway, the 120 kW/360 Nm 2.1-litre turbodiesel – in this case running through the optional $2614 seven-speed auto – builds reasonable speed without excessive fuel use (it ran under 10 l/100 km) or noise from

CORPORATE GOVERNANCE the engine bay, but it’s the lack of noise through the rear cargo area (which is accessed by a kerbside door and optional rear barn doors and does without any insulation on the walls) that is even more impressive.

The cabin, with air conditioning throughout the rear, is accessed by a power-operated kerbside sliding door that is complemented by an electrically retractable side step and fixed handrail to allow easy access to the passenger compartment.

The safety features list is topped by standard Crosswind Assist, something of a comfort given the near-2.4 m tall vehicle is mixing it with B-doubles at 100 km/h. The test vehicle was also equipped with the Driving Assistance Package, which adds collision, blindspot and lane departure warning systems as well as auto high-beam.

The driver gets a conventional gear selector in the dash (not the stalk-style gear shift that is far from the favourite set-up in other Benzes) and reach and rake adjustable steering – sadly it’s only a plastic steering wheel to twirl.

Despite being near to its replacement date, Sprinter can hold its head high as still being directly comparable with everything in this segment and achieving better scores than many of the competitors. Utilising much of the same drivetrain as the lower-roofed 316 van, the Transfer Minibus 316CDI is set up for shifting up to 12 occupants, with the driver and two occupants up front, and a further 9 accommodated comfortably in the rear in a 4-3-2 configuration. Unlike the smaller people-movers in the Benz range, the seats are fixed but the set-up allows for a considerable luggage space behind the row of four at the rear, accessed by standard 270-degree rear barn doors (that thankfully don’t clash with sliding rear door when all are open) and a rear bumper with integrated step.

The Transfer loses the walk-through feature to the threeseat bench, which converts to a two-seater configuration when the middle backrest is folded forward to reveal a document tray. The functional front is further bolstered by overhead storage and a number of open and lidded storage areas atop the dashboard similar to that of the equivalent van models, although the Transfer is equipped with bi-xenon headlights with separate LED daytime running lights. Sharing the 120 kW/360 Nm 2.1-litre turbodiesel rearwheel-drive configuration with the load-lugger van range, the Transfer is equipped as standard with the seven-speed auto, and builds reasonable speed without excessive fuel use (it ran under 10 l/100 km) or noise from the engine bay. The test vehicle was fitted with the upgraded air conditioning and the high-roof package, which added a spacious feeling to the rear occupant space.

T

he IVECO Daily range has been a story of continuing improvement since its launch, as the Italian manufacturer fine tunes the specification for the Australian market to make it very much more competitive and decidedly more attractive to purchase. The Daily light-commercial range encompasses vans of all sizes, from low-roof models to high-roof, varying length wheelbases, and increased cargo volumes that maximise space through different roof height options. It pays to be very specific when looking at Daily van specs as the interior cargo volumes now available include models with 7 cu m, 9 cu m, 11 cu m, 12 cu m, 16 cu m, 18 cu m and a massive 20 cu m. What this option range provides is everything from an around-town local delivery van to an on-highway, interstate delivery truck for express parcels or even light removals, given the amount of interior space.

As commercial vehicle operators know well, the service departments of car dealerships usually shut at 5:00 p.m. on weekdays and don’t open at weekends. To find service and maintenance options running into the evening or over weekends you have to take your trusty van or truck to a commercial vehicle dealer, where service options exist to suit the operator, not just the service manager. Commercial vehicles need to be out working and not off the road during business hours. Unless a similar loan vehicle is available, the operator loses revenue earned by the vehicle and increases their operating costs by having to hire in a replacement. That’s where buying a Daily or similar alternative through a commercial vehicle dealership pays dividends. IVECO Australia has looked closely at the Daily range and reduced the complexity of the product variations so that a typical specification brings with it an inclusive list of standard safety features and benefits.

DAILY EXERCISE

In this mix of product IVECO adds to the light and medium vans and cab/chassis versions with single-cabs or crewcabs, together with larger vans that require specialised drivers licences in the 4.5-7.0 tonnes categories. Finally, there’s a minibus version, offering an eight-speed fully automatic transmissions and a choice of different interior trim levels.

DAILY EXERCISE When considering alternative vehicles in this highly competitive segment it’s worth comparing the active and passive safety systems to see just what you get for your money. Remember that with Chain of Responsibility legislation getting greater attention each year, you have a responsibility to place your employees in a safe working environment. With the Daily and its ESP9 list of safety features you will be gaining the following benefits: ABS (anti-lock braking); EBD (Electronic Brake Force Distribution) to share the brake force safely between the front and rear axles; ESP (Electronic Stability Programme), maintaining vehicle stability by selective brake application; and ASR (Anti-Slip Regulation), which prevents the driving wheels from losing traction.

“The Daily as a package is now extremely attractive”

There are of course more inbuilt safety features, and these include DTC (Drag Torque Control), which acts on engine speed to reduce the braking torque; Hill Hold Control, which holds the vehicle stationery on an incline; LAC (Load Adaptive Control), which compensates for the load distribution; and TSM (Trailer Sway Mitigation), which detects the presence of a trailer and adapts the ESC control strategy in order not to negatively influence the dynamics of the trailer being towed. And yet there are more safety features, with HRB (Hydraulic Rear Wheel Boost) to increase brake pressure to the rear wheels in an emergency braking situation; HFC (Hydraulic Fading Compensation), which detects the potential for brake fade and increases circuit pressure; and RMI (Roll Movement Intervention), which mitigates high speed rollover situations that can develop from sudden driver input. The RMI system extends its operation to Roll Over Mitigation to prevent the onset of a rollover situation, again caused by external influences or sudden driver inputs that affect stability. In choosing the right Daily for your van or light truck operation, IVECO suggested the single-cab 50C17A8. With a wheelbase of 3750 mm and a GVM of 4495 kg, this can be driven by a car licence holder and it comes with a price tag of $60,995 including the tray. Next up for the challenge was the 35S17A8 V Daily medium van with a high roof that offered a 12-cubic-metre capacity with a wheelbase of 3520 mm and a GVM again of 4495 kg. Its price tag, which includes a plywood floor, is $60,200. The third Daily off the rank was in the form of the large 16-cubic-metre volume 50C17A V model with a wheelbase of 4100 mm and again with a GVM of 4495 kg, which in this example provided a payload of 1954 kg. Again supplied with a factory optioned hardwooden floor, the retail price is $71,000.

FEATURE Power for the Daily range comes in several choices, all being four-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled diesels, but with different power and torque outputs. The test vehicle featured the 170 hp/125 kW version with variable geometry turbo and leaving the 205 hp/150 kW alternative on the wish list. Torque ratings here are 430 Nm at 15002600 rpm, stepping up to 470 Nm at 1400-3000 rpm. There’s no doubt that the latest Daily models to join the Australian market are better built than their earlier siblings. Steering response has been improved and for a driver running over broken road edges there’s little influence on the directional stability. The cab itself is easy to enter and comfortable for a day behind the wheel. The performance from the 170 hp engine is well up to the demands of shifting even a full weight cargo, and with the eight-speed ZF automatic transmission it becomes a pleasure to drive any of the different versions available. The cabin is well equipped with intuitively-placed instruments and controls and an efficient climate control system. Other benefits include four-speaker audio system

with FM/AM tuner, CD/mp3 player, mp3 player with USB drive, AUX input and Bluetooth connectivity. Radio and phone controls can be accessed by the steering wheel. When the Daily models first surfaced in the Australian market they were accompanied by some annoying rattles and the occasional originating from the front suspension. Not so for the latest versions, with better road manners all-round and a much quieter cab interior. Options such as interior plywood lining for the walls and floor protect the van from damage resulting from the load, and there are plenty of tie-down points to keep loads secure. The Daily cab/chassis is also impressive and it proves the Europeans are well ahead of the Asian manufacturers when it comes to providing creature comforts in a light truck habitat. In crew-cab form there is seating in the rear for four passengers, complete with storage space under the seat. We would recommend Daily to anyone looking for a van larger than the typical one-tonner, and, with pricing that is much more cost competitive, the Daily as a package is now extremely attractive.

ino is full of optimism for a record year as this year it celebrates the highest sales figures since the truck sales boom of 2008. With an improved product range, and with more upgrades to come, there’s every reason to believe the positive attitude of the company is set to continue. Bill Gillespie, Hino’s general manager of brand and franchise development, told Delivery Magazine the company was also buoyant about its current record order bank, with fleet orders undergoing a surge in response to the committed focus of the company on safety, aftersales service and customer support.

“Our ‘Built to Go’ range of pre-bodied trucks represents about 25 percent of all sales, with the remainder being cab/chassis models for individual bodybuilder selection. Since making fully-automatic transmissions available we have seen around 80 percent of 300 Series buyers and 50 percent of 500 Series buyers choose the full fluid automatic option,” said Bill. Product strategy manager, Daniel Petrovski, is confident the adoption of a fluid automatic transmission is the key to future sales success, this being a far more popular trend for drivers than a corresponding automated manual transmission (AMT).

“A fluid automatic transmission is much smoother in operation and it enables the engine and driveline to benefit from full power ratio changes, without the engine having to power down between gear shifts. The vehicle doesn’t lose momentum during gear changes, and for the driver it provides a much smoother and faster shift pattern,” said Daniel. The 300 Series and 500 Series wide cabs also benefit from being the first Japanese truck ranges to include vehicle stability control (VSC) throughout the product line-up. This feature, together with reverse camera monitoring, will be continued throughout the remaining members of the Hino range as the next-generation models are introduced into the market. “It is our view that items such as vehicle stability control, reverse cameras and blind-spot cameras should be included on every light truck as a safety benefit,” said Daniel Petrovski. The “Built to Go” pre-bodied options apply to the steelbodied tipper and the Trade Ace aluminium dropside tray range, with or without ladder racks, on the 300 standard and wide-cab models.

Greater refinement adds appeal to Hino’s 300 range

HAPPY HINO The 4.0-litre, four-cylinder, turbocharged and intercooled, direct injection diesel engine is the standard engine throughout the 300 Series. This produces maximum power of 110 kW and 420 Nm when fitted with the standard cab and the five-speed manual gearbox with single overdrive ratio, or the six-speed automatic transmission, with double overdrive ratio. The wide-cab versions have a higher output rating of 121 kW and 464 Nm and are available only with a six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed automatic transmission.

Delivery Magazine drove examples of the short-wheelbase, factory-bodied steel tipper and the medium-wheelbase Trade Ace range, both of which can be plated for a GVM range of 4495 kg to 8500 kg. The tipper body dimensions come in at 3.0 m, 3.1 m and 3.6 m with volumes of 1.9 cu m, 2.1 cu m and 3.0 cu m respectively. The tray dimensions are 3300 mm long by 1880 mm wide for the standard cab with the 2525 mm wheelbase, or 4500 mm by 2100 mm for the longer 3430 mm wheelbase wide-cab version.

With the engine emissions level currently conforming to Euro 5 rating, the 4.0-litre engine exhaust system uses a catalytic converter with diesel particulate active reduction system, rather than the next step of incorporating selective catalytic reduction (SCR) and the use of AdBlue.

If you have personal memories of bouncing around in early steel-bodied light tippers, then you are in for a treat as the ride quality is so far ahead of those early examples. Access into the cab is easy, thanks to wide opening doors and a well-placed step and grab handle.

Without the need for AdBlue, the DPF filters the soot particles from the exhaust to minimise these emissions into the air. As the DPF is a sealed filter in the exhaust system it needs to be regenerated to avoid blockage. In order to do so, as the exhaust system heats up, the DPF can self-clean by burning off the soot particles. Alternatively, engine management systems can activate a regeneration sequence if the DPF has not sufficiently regenerated.

The driver gets a spring-suspended seat (wide-cab only), which takes out any final roughness, and there’s plenty of leg and shoulder space to find a comfortable driving position, aided by a steering wheel that adjusts for reach, height and rake. Instrumentation-wise it’s all easy to see, with columnmounted wipers, washers, indicators, exhaust brake and cruise control actuation.

The large-screen infotainment system displays vision from the rear-facing camera and locks in vision from the right and left-mounted blind-spot cameras fitted at the front of the chassis immediately behind the cab. Those familiar with the 300-Series will also notice the air intake has been extended in height to mount flush behind the cab roof on the driver’s side. This was changed in line with the new 4x4 version and continued across the range. Running with just over one tonne of payload in each truck, the engine and automatic transmission showed how well they work together, with a performance ratio well up to the movement of traffic around Sydney streets. There was never any suggestion of sluggishness, despite each unit having turned over less than 2700 km at the start of the drive. The 300 Series is light to drive, the steering for the wide cab is a power assisted recirculating ball design, while that of the standard cab is power assisted rack and pinion. There is sufficient steering “feel” to satisfy most drivers and the truck tracks straight and true on the road, without any tendency to wander. The turning circle is amazingly tight, seriously better than the majority of utes, and enabling the driver to turn the truck around without the usual back and forth shuffle. The key to driver acceptance lies in the six-speed fluid automatic transmission, as this is able to push through the power supply smoothly and continuously without the annoying on-again/off-again/on-again shift protocol of the AMTs fitted to light commercials. AMTs work really well in heavy trucks, but universally become a real annoyance when fitted in light commercials and passenger cars. The original justification for fitting AMTs was based on lower cost and improved fuel economy, but with some AMTs adding a price tag in excess of $2000, when the price of a fluid auto was usually around $1000-$1500, 56

DELIVERY

ISSUE 74

clearly debunks that argument. Hopefully in time the AMT may go the same way as the space saver tyre, largely now discontinued from Australian spec vehicles. The light truck design has in the past been something of a lone forgotten sheep when it came to perceived safety, but, with the 300 Series, Hino has brought safety into being a major feature. Driver protection starts with active safety, and the inclusion of ventilated disc brakes front and rear make sure the stopping department is up to top levels of performance. Anti-lock braking with vehicle stability control and traction control should temper the behaviour of any younger drivers that might let enthusiasm overtake their ability. If something untoward does occur, the cab is rated to ECE R-29 rollover protection and cab strength, and is fitted with dual SRS airbags. In terms of service and maintenance costs, the Hino 300 and its larger cousin the 500 Series are covered by fixedprice servicing with intervals of 20,000 km or six months. Hino’s service network understands the trucking fraternity’s need for availability during the working day, with many of its dealerships offering out of normal hours servicing. So you can drop off your vehicle after work and collect it the following morning ready to start a fresh day. Some dealerships also offer a mobile service unit option, and there are also contract maintenance options available for those that like that reinforcement of delegation with full record keeping. If something goes pear-shaped, there’s a full 24/7 breakdown service support in place. In a nutshell, the 300 Series rewrites driver expectations in terms of ride comfort and safety, producing a wellengineered and well-executed product range that’s not short of interior space, while offering a high level of equipment.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER Can Chinese truck manufacturer, JMC, drive a wedge into the Australian truck market? – Report by Chris Mullett

H

aving endured this stop/start/stop process of introducing new products from overseas manufacturers attempting to take the Australian market by storm, there’s now a new player entering the market in the form of JMC Motor.

Founded in 1968 and part of the Jiangling Motors Corporation Limited of Nanchang, China, the company is claimed to hold the 120th position amongst the top 250 companies in China. Employing close to 17,000 personnel, the company has operated a joint venture operation with Isuzu Motor Company since 1997, plus it operates a passengercar making joint venture with Changan, which sells vehicles under the Landwin marque. With the company building Isuzu Trucks for the Chinese market it is perhaps a coincidence that the JMC truck range bears a striking similarity to the designs of Isuzu within its own range of products that are marketed under the Conquer nameplate. These light trucks are available in short-wheelbase 4x2 form as the Conquer 2750 (55-90-SWB), in mediumwheelbase form as the Conquer 3360 (60-90-MWB) and 3360 (67-110-MWB), and in long-wheelbase form as the Conquer 3815 (75-110-LWB). The engine common to these products is an early version of a Ford Transit unit (also assembled by JMC in China, together with the Everest, under licence from Ford), and produces 90 kW at 3200 rpm with 315 Nm of torque rated between 1600 and 3200 rpm in the first two models, rising in output to 110 kW at 2800 rpm with peak torque of 375 Nm rated at 1600-2800 rpm in the upper two models. This is a four-cylinder, 16-valve diesel with high pressure, 58

common-rail direct injection, using a turbocharger and liquid cooled intercooler. In line with Euro 5 emissions levels the engine exhaust system uses SCR and AdBlue to achieve the desired results. The transmission is a Getrag 6MT1420 six-speed manual (also built in China), with air over hydraulic drum brakes. The suspension is leaf spring all round, with eight leaves on the front and a seven plus seven spring pack on the rear, and it runs on 7.5x16-inch 14 ply tyres with duals on the rear. If things go to plan, there should be an AMT version available within the next 12 months.

DIVIDE AND CONQUER

“With the company building Isuzu Trucks for the Chinese market it is perhaps a coincidence that the JMC truck range bears a striking similarity

GVMs range from 5500 kg up to 7500 kg, but the lighter rated models can be de-rated down to 4495 kg in order to take advantage of the car licence provisions for drivers. Payloads run from 2377 kg for the de-rated car licence version, through the standard weight of 3377 kg and peaking at 4702 kg for the Conquer 3815 model. Given the association between JMC and Isuzu for the Chinese market, the overall appearance of the body is somewhat reminiscent of the Isuzu product, but whether the panels are in fact identical, or could be used as replacements is a matter for conjecture. FEATURE The cab is typical of the smaller-weight Japanese style cabovers, and access and egress is again to the same standards. The driver’s seat is neither air nor spring suspended, although this is on the cards for future models. As could be expected by the size of the spring pack, the ride is on the harsh side, no doubt because in its home country this model would be subjected to overloading abuse by owners keen to make the best available use of each trip. With a one-tonne weight up against the headboard the ride was also choppy, but it has to be said that the engine and transmission worked well, with a good match of ratios and available power. Unlike the JAC Truck models that have disappeared from Australian roads, the steering on the recirculating ball-type steering box is relatively direct , without the wandering that was obvious in the JAC and subsequent Higer bus applications. While the driver and passengers are aware of road imperfections that are not completely damped out by the suspension, the truck goes where it is pointed, a factor that the JAC did not necessarily provide. JMC is currently investigating appointing a factory tray supplier to source the completed unit from Australia, but may also pursue a factory-supplied steel tipper from home base. The big question for those considering the purchase of this newcomer to the market comes down to the vehicle’s intended use. For the collection of fruit and vegetables from the local market on a daily basis, and then transporting the load to the retail shop, the driver will not be phased by the harder than normal ride standards, as long as it performs its daily task without mechanical failure. The influencing factor here will be the ability to save $6000-$8000 on the purchase price by comparison with the established Japanese-owned alternatives. As was proven by purchasers of the late and unlamented Kia Pregio, if the price is right then the buyer can ignore the lack of sophisticated safety features and higher comfort interiors. This is basic transport, but it’s affordable for those that accept it for what it is offering as a load carrier that’s fit for a specific purpose. The dealer network is currently numbering around 20 outlets, with more planned to expand the company reach. It’s also important to note the truck range as available currently in Australia is only part of the total product range. There’s a ute option called the Vigus available as a pick-up in 4x2 and 4x4 that’s been available for the past year with a petrol or diesel engine, albeit units that conform to Euro 4 emissions standards. This model is a precursor to the next-generation Vigus that will soon be available with Euro 5 compliance and host of interior upgrades that shift the competitiveness of the model much closer to the current expectations of the market.

The next-generation Vigus will shift from a five-speed manual to a six-speed upgrade, linking in ABS with EBS, an improved audio entertainment system and steering wheel controls. An automatic transmission is mooted for introduction within the next 12 months.

FIRE RESPONDER W Ed Higginson reports on new ideas for those handling call outs to fight small fires

hen it comes to sourcing the right body for an emergency response there are many suppliers across Australia able to provide a broad range of options. Although the choice of designs might appear endless, the materials used in their manufacture are usually limited to steel, aluminium or fibreglass.

An Australian business that is a well-known supplier of specialist equipment to the emergency services and heavy industrial sector has launched a new light truck body made from an alternative material that it believes will challenge the current market and impress everyone that takes a look. PT Hydraulics can trace its origins in Australia back 70 years to a business known as Ritch Engineering, which turned into SBX Power Hydraulics. PT Hydraulics was created in 2003 when the management team bought out the previous existing business and set it on course to become a well-known and trusted brand in its field.

62

ISSUE 74

Until recently the company has comprised of four divisions, with PT Rescue focusing on the emergency services offering a wide range of specialist tools such as the jaws of life, vehicle lifting airbags, fire-fighting hoses, environmental foams, plus much more. PT Industrial supports the mining, power companies and industrial sector, with PT Rail working with the rail industry and PT Hire supplying equipment across all three other areas.

PT Hydraulics has now launched its fifth division. PT Bodies will focus on the development of vehicle bodies, initially concentrating on the customer base of PT Rescue, but quickly expanding across all divisions of the company, plus looking at potential new markets as they become available. During a recent trip back to the UK, the manager of PT Hydraulics, Stuart Coulton, came across a compact firefighting ute, set up with an impressive body made from polypropylene. As a seasoned fire fighter himself, and after years as a fire chief in the UK, he quickly appreciated the

FIRE RESPONDER benefits and scope that this product could offer the Australian market and set about bringing the range of bodies over to be evaluated for his own client base. So, what makes the material so special? Polypropylene has been around since 1951 and is the second most popular synthetic plastic in use today. Polypropylene features in everyday products such as clothes, building construction, automotive parts and even polymer banknotes. For the vehicle bodies, polypropylene is the highest grade available and comes in solid plastic sheets that can be easily cut to individual requirements. The bodies are made to order, with customer requirements being modelled on state-of-the-art CAD software to ensure the body design is fit for purpose, and, most importantly, strong. Once approved for construction, the body is laser cut from 15 mm polypropylene sheets for the floor and 12 mm sheets for the walls. This is plastic welded together to form an extremely strong body that can be mounted directly to the vehicle chassis, without the need for a sub-frame. This form of construction produces a much lighter body weight, some 20%-25% lighter than a comparable steel or aluminium body, which ultimately benefits fuel economy and vehicle payload potential. With some forms of fabrication it is not unknown for a completed body design when fitted to a vehicle to already be near to its gross weight limit or maximum carrying capacity before being loaded. The new polypropylene designs herald a shift to plastic as a strong and lightweight material that is much more advantageous than alternative, heavier materials. As a result of these new materials and designs the manufacturer is so confident of the final options available that it has backed the product materials with a 10-year

warranty. This warranty continues to apply even when an existing body is transferred onto a replacement cab/ chassis during its working life. Stuart explains: “PT poly bodies are extremely durable and have a superb resistance to impact due to their strength and flexibility. In most low-speed impacts there is little or no damage as the polypropylene absorbs the impact and springs back into its original shape. “At a higher speed the plastic eliminates the shock transfer through the body keeping damage to a minimum. Polypropylene will not crack, corrode or suffer from stress fractures associated with driving on corrugations of the Australian outback roads. Our bodies are so strong they can withstand the impact of a sledgehammer, try that on a steel or fibreglass body!” After seeing photos of a vehicle overseas that had been involved in a severe rollover, it was impressive to see that although the ute’s cab was written off, there was little damage in the body itself, allowing it to be transferred to a new vehicle for future use.

FEATURE

Polypropylene has been used for making vehicle bodies in the UK for over 10 years now and has proven to be a viable alternative to established production materials. Over time, the product has proven itself repeatedly and has grown in popularity, with one business building nearly a 100 units a year. When compared to traditional materials, the new polypropylene designs provide reductions in weight, plus improved heat resistance. The material is not prone to cracking like GRP, nor does it corrode like metal. It can withstand a variety of aggressive chemicals, plus it is 100% recyclable. It also has better sound insulation, which helps when small generators or pumps are mounted inside the body. The manufacturer is also confident that pricing will be comparable to similar designs using traditional materials. When it comes to repairing the product in the event that it is damaged during its life, the manufacturer states it is as easy as simply cutting out the affected area and plastic welding a new piece in place. Since their availability on the market in Australia and New Zealand, PT Bodies has placed units into various fire and rescue teams for full evaluation and claims they have been received with good feedback to date.

FIRE RESPONDER

“The emergency services have embraced these new compact bodies that are a lot more compact and versatile than a traditional fire truck, plus easier for off-road use. There is also a demonstration fire-fighting body fitted to a Mercedes Sprinter cab/chassis currently working its way around the country for trial purposes, with PT Bodies confident it will gain a lot of interest,” said a company spokesperson. “Over the years, the advantages of small compact vehicles with go-anywhere capabilities have proved extremely valuable. Mainly seen in the small CFA utes or paramedic’s cars, these types of vehicles are becoming more commonplace and PT Bodies expects that this trend will increase,” the spokesperson added. Although the initial focus has been with PT Rescue’s existing customers in the emergency services, coupled to its existing range of specialist products, the company can also see a wide scope of emergency response and work vehicles that would benefit from the expanding product range. These include applications such as where a compact body is required to carry heavy equipment, pumps, compressors, hydraulics, etc. As well as fire-fighting and rescue teams, the current product range covers industries such as the utilities sector, mobile workshops and delivery vehicles. The company’s in-house design team can facilitate any bespoke design for the tradie wanting a specialised layout for shelving and tools whilst still wanting to maximise the payload. Other alternative options include a personalised ute body design for camping and touring applications.

THE RAM FEATURE

H

ere’s one ute that could never be likened to a shrinking violet when it comes to presence and ability. As a standalone division of Fiat Chrysler Australia (FCA) since 2009, the RAM Truck brand has confirmed it is an ideal solution for Australians needing a vehicle with high-capacity towing abilities that blend high torque availability with the stability and safety not available from smaller-capacity vehicles.

At first sight the size is daunting, but the overall dimensions seem to blend into the Australian landscape as you get more used to sitting behind the wheel, especially when there are hundreds or even thousands of kilometres of bitumen ahead of you that need to be covered. The RAM Trucks family is on the increase, and the most recent additions include the Code Black version of the RAM 2500 and the Redback Laramie. In place of the mass of chrome that usually takes pride of place framing the grille, the Limited Edition Code Black opts for an aggressive matt-black grille with black, heavyduty wheel arch flares. The black treatment continues from the grille to the front and rear bumpers, the badging and the door-mounted rear-view mirrors. The 20-inch black finish alloy wheels are factory fitted with aggressive NITTO ‘Terra Grappler’ 275/65 R20 A/T 126/123R all-terrain tyres. And of course there’s more, in this case the new RAM REDBACK 2500 limited edition. The RAM REDBACK 2500 is instantly recognisable thanks the new black PowerWagon grille which replaces the traditional RAM ‘cross-hair’ chrome grille with the RAM badge at its centre. The PowerWagon grille is emblazoned with RAM across its centre in striking bold silver letters and, to ensure there’s no mistaking the new limited edition from the rear, for the first time in Australia, the RAM name is also spread across the width of the tailgate, too. 66

ISSUE 74

The RAM REDBACK 2500 also features massive tow hooks at the front colour coded in bright red, like the fangs of the spider after which it is named, as well as bonnet and side decals, black side steps, and REDBACK badging. The RAM REDBACK 2500 is available, of course, in Flame Red, but for owners looking for something a little more subtle it is also available in Brilliant Black.

REPORT

THE RAM REPORT

For those that get a buzz from driving the ute with the largest capacity diesel engine in the market the 6.7-litre Cummins turbo diesel engine produces 276 kW of power and 1084 Nm of torque and is coupled to a six-speed automatic transmission. Don’t think of it as a fuel guzzler. As a recent PowerTorque test run of over 2400 km proved, this engine is capable of frugal fuel use as low as 10 km/litre over long distances, while maintaining high average road speeds.

As we reached our destination in Toowoomba the average fuel consumption recorded dipped to 9.9 l/100km, but as we pulled up to photograph the final result, it clicked back up to 10 l/100km. Try getting anywhere near that from a Toyota while averaging 88 km/h over an each way trip of 1200 km. The RAM 2500 Laramie offers a payload of 913 kg in the tray, and, depending on the type of towing hitch, with a 50 mm or 70 mm towball or pintle hook, the maximum towing capacity is rated up to 6942 kg. For those wanting to tow with a 5th wheel or goose-neck trailer the RAM 3500 is now available in two versions, one rated at 4490 kg GVM and able to be driven on a car licence, and the second version rated at 5309 kg GVM that requires a light rigid truck licence to meet Australian licensing rules. The down-rated RAM 3500 continues to offer a maximum towing capacity of 6171 kg, but the payload in the tray drops from the 1713 kg load of the normal RAM 3500 to 894 kg to provide a GVM of 4490 kg. Additional features for all models include twin-mode exhaust brakes, switched chassis electronics with a tow/haul mode and factory-fitted controls for separate trailer brakes, as well as a spacious 1930 mm length tray.

FEATURE

One of the unique upgrades for 2017 line-up is the innovative RamBox storage system. Mounted on either side of the RAM 2500 Laramie, they turn the load area into a vertical-sided box and create two lockers the length of the load area. This feature capitalises on the space that is wasted in most utes and turns it into a flexible, easily accessible, versatile and secure storage box. These lockers are weatherproof and are included in the central locking, or locked separately. They have their own lighting and they create a space that is 152 cm long and provides 243 litres of storage space on either side of the RAM. This RamBoxes are easily accessible, regardless of the load being carried in the main tray, and have lids that open a full 90 degrees. The lockers incorporate drain holes so that they may be used as cool storage with ice and space

68

for up to 140 drink cans on either side. For work or play use they are large enough to hold items including a set of golf clubs, helmets, toolboxes, kayak paddles, fishing rods or chainsaws. The RamBox system also includes an adjustable and lockable bed divider that creates individual compartments in the pickup bed to separate payload equipment such as tools or equipment. It can be conveniently stowed in the front of the bed when not in use. The cargo box itself is also fitted with a cargo rail system with sliding, adjustable cleats for infinitely adjustable tie-down versatility. Even with the RamBox system in place, the RAM 2500 tray is still wide enough to take a standard pallet and the load bed divider may be used to hold the pallet – and its load – firmly in place, allowing the rest of the tray to be used for other items while securely separated from the palletised load.

THE RAM REPORT

The standard equipment list features heated and ventilated front seats that are ten-way power operated for the driver and six-way for the front passenger, with all seats leather trimmed. As well as 12-volt power outlets, there is a 240-volt 100-amp mains power socket; the ventilation system is climate control dual-zone; the steering wheel is heated; the pedals are power adjustable; a sun roof is standard; the audio system has nine speakers and a sub-woofer; and the dashboard includes a vehicle information system. There are also two rear cameras, one for the cargo area and another for reversing, which display on the 20 cm

touchscreen display. Emphasising the sheer size of the interior of the RAM Laramie truck, the 2017 model gains a second microphone for the standard Bluetooth hands-free system, so that both driver and front seat passenger have their own microphones in the roof lining above their heads. The change has been made to ensure that the front seat passenger has the same voice clarity as the driver, despite the width of the interior of the RAM Truck. An official nationwide dealer network and a threeyear/100,000 km warranty that includes 24-hour roadside assistance back the RAM range.
