EDITORIAL

T

he year just got busier in the run up to Christmas, and the rush by manufacturers to introduce new models is going to be continuing well into the new year.

The ute segment is recognised as the fastest growing section of the light commercial vehicle industry, and, in this issue, Stuart artin reviews the long-awaited W marok prior to its national launch, to establish whether it lives up to all the expectations. Ssang ong is suffering an identity crisis in the ustralian market, as its current distributor, T C , appears to have lost the marketing will to support the brand. n the same way as reat Wall shifted its presence from T C to for the ustralian consumer, the Ssang ong brand may well continue in our market as the result of intervention by its parent company in South orea, or by the giant ahindra corporation that owns the brand. issan’s new avara has been on the market for not quite 2 months, but has already undergone a suspension revision that aligns all its models more closely with ustralian expectations. full road test of the new suspension upgrades will appear in the next issue of Delivery, but, in the meantime, we take a look at a concept vehicle for off-road rescue and recovery that issan displayed in ermany at the Show in anover. s a sign of the times, the avara concept uses drones to help cover a search area when looking for missing persons. rones have also caught the imagination of ercedesen , and these form part of a concept called the ision an. The aim is to be able to drive to a central location and to deliver parcels to their final destinations in the local vicinity by using robots and drones carried on board. ut the big news for ercedes- en is the unveiling of the -Class due for release in urope in the th quarter of 20 . Delivery Magazine headed off to Sweden for a bit of neutral territory where the erman manufacturer gave a great insight into the new ute as well as its plans to introduce electric drivetrains in ito vans. The basis of the new en -Class is founded on the issan avara, and you will be seeing more of the issan outline on the road as there’s also going to be a version sporting the enault badge. lthough enault has not yet announced plans for an ustralian introduction date, the brand is kicking substantial goals in its sales performance own nder.

Mitsubishi’s Triton comes under the spotlight in this issue as Stuart artin headed off to the linders anges to take a little behind the wheel of this impressive load lugger. ot enough focus is placed on the outstanding all-wheel-drive system the Triton shares with the ajero. eing able to lock in all-wheel-drive through a selectable centre differential for travel on bitumen in bad weather conditions is something that most of the apanese-style one tonners can’t match. Mitsubishi is to be commended on its technology and for bringing the Triton to market at such a price competitive level. yundai light trucks are heading back onto the ustralian market with a new range of engines and transmissions and an intention of pushing back the tide of Chinese importers that simply don’t make the grade. ave Whyte gets back into the saddle to see how the new models compare. There’s movement in the large van sector, with ercedes- en , and olkswagen all signing off on new replacements for the coming year. xpect the brand, better known for its heavyduty truck range, to market the van range through its distributor enske Commercial ehicles. t’s a direct competitor for the new W Crafter, and both products are built in the same new factory at o nan in oland. ercedes- en will announce its new Sprinter next year, ending its association with W as far as sharing the previous manufacturing facility in ast ermany. inally, we profile Crown quipment, probably the highest profile manufacturer of lifting equipment, and join in the celebrations of over 0 years of innovation. It has to be said that from a dimensional and styling perspective the Berlingo looks better than the Kangoo, although the Kangoo certainly feels the more sophisticated design in terms of ride comfort, interior noise levels, handling and general appeal What this design means is that a courier can use the cargo space during the day, even able to accept a pallet in through the rear barn doors, which fold out after releasing the check straps. The distance between wheelarches is 1218 mm in the Kangoo, just beaten by the Berlingo at 1230 mm. THE NUMBERS GAME

Despite all the setbacks of the past year, VW continues to grow LCV sales across the globe. The Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles empire continues to grow sales, with global deliveries up 9.1 percent as the company delivered 350,800 light commercial vehicles to customers around the world from January through September 2016. The T and Caddy ranges were particularly successful over the first nine months of the year, with deliveries of 146,900 Transporter models corresponding to an increase of 17.3 percent, while the 117,000 Caddy models delivered to customers represents an increase of 12 percent. With 43,200 vehicles delivered in September, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also recorded a significant increase from the delivery figures for the same month in 2015 (+19.3 percent). In the Australian market, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles also set new precedents with record year-todate sales as of September 30, achieving 10,644 sales year-to-date, beating the previous best mark of 10,282, which was set last year. It was also the brand’s best September with 1411 units, just eclipsing the 1130 achieved in 2014. Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles growth was 7 percent for September and 3.5 per cent year-to-date. Transporter sold 297 units in September alone, achieving a total result for the first nine months of 2016 of 2297, surpassing the 2073 record set in 2013. As we continue towards the end of 2016, the VW group is also putting a lot of emphasis behind the launch of the V6 Amarok as a flagship for its ute range, plus preparing the groundwork for the launch of its all-new Crafter, which heads to the showrooms in early 2017. The IAA Show in Hanover, Europe’s largest commercial vehicle event, provided the opportunity to launch the new Crafter, which will be built in a new production facility in Poland. The development of the new Crafter is a product sharing exercise with MAN and is a significant change from the previous product-sharing agreement that saw the VW Crafter and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter being

built alongside each other at the same factory in Ludwigsfelde, in what used to be known as East Germany. One of the highlights of the IAA Show was the world debut of the e-Crafter, specially designed for emissions-free service in city centres and due for public launch at the end of 2017. From the very first designs for the new Crafter, electric power was incorporated into the plans as a drive system variant, as outlined by Dr. Eckhard Scholz, chairman of the board of management of Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles. The character of the new Crafter has not been changed by the electric drive system and has a kerbweight of 2541 kg with a payload capacity of 1709 kg. The load space dimensions are 11.3 cu. m with a maximum internal height of 1961 mm. The load width available between the wheel arches is 1380 mm and the maximum cargo space length is 4855 mm. With a permitted total weight of 4.25 tonnes, the e-Crafter is powered by its 100 kW electric motor with peak torque of 290 Nm, to the maximum permitted speed of 80 km/h with the maximum payload of 1709 kg. The e-Crafter’s battery pack, which is made up of 312 Lithium-ion cells, has a total capacity of 43 kW/ hours and is stored under the cargo space floor, maintaining the standard cargo area dimensions. With a projected range of more than 200 km the batteries can also be charged back up to 80 percent in 45 minutes. In the small-van sector the Caddy remains the top selling contender, with the current range of SWB van, Maxi van and Maxi Crewvan, all now powered by the 1.4-litre, four-cylinder, TSI BlueMotion, turbocharged and direct injected petrol engine. There are currently no diesel alternatives available in this category. Available with a six-speed manual or seven-speed DSG twin-clutch automated manual transmission, maximum power of 92 kW is produced at 4800 rpm, with peak torque of 220 Nm rated at 1500-3500 rpm. Already available with stop/start engine technology to reduce fuel consumption when in heavy traffic or stationary at traffic lights, the Caddy range is now available with Forward Collision Warning and City Emergency Braking as standard fitment. The same inclusion now extends across the range in all VW panel vans, crewvans and people movers.

FEATURE Pricing for the Caddy starts with the TS1220 six-speed manual Maxivan at $28,590, rising to 33,090 for the Maxi Crewvan fitted with the seven-speed DSG transmission. Over in Europe, VW has recently launched a commercially oriented version of the “e-load up!, which adds a smaller dimension for those running light goods on inner city runs where parking and access space is at a premium. The new e-load up! has two seats and four doors, and space in the rear for light parcels and small goods, all within an overall length of only 3.60 metres. Using a sustainable and environmentally friendly electric drive, the e-load up! can access zero emission ones in ma or cities while o ering up to 990 litres of cargo volume in the area from the rear hatch to the mesh partition. ith a level cargo floor and a ro ust steel lattice on the continuous partition, the maximum payload for the e-load up! is 360 kg at a vehicle weight of 1230 kg, or in the standard trim with a conventional petrol engine the payload is 474 kg at a vehicle weight of only 921 kg. The delivery van's small exterior dimensions give it a turning circle of only 9800 mm.

The model's combined electrical energy consumption of 11.7 kWh/100 km and a range of 160 km give it an efficiency class rating of A+. perating costs are also reduced by the fact that all electrically powered vehicles are currently exempt from the vehicle tax in Germany. The load up! petrol-engined version is also the most efficient vehicle in its class, with fuel consumption of only 4.4 litres per 100 km. In this format the petrol engine produces k matched to a five speed gear ox. The eco-load up! with natural gas drive boasts consumption of only 2.9 kg per 100 km. This model has two steel gas tanks with a total capacity of approx. 11 kg that are mounted on the underbody. The display at AA included no less than 33 examples of the latest Transporter. Heading the list was the Multivan anAmericana, which com ines the comfort of the Multivan with the o road capa ility of an SUV thanks to the proven 4MOTION all-wheel-drive. It is also available with front-wheel-drive only and with petrol or diesel engines ranging from 84 kW/114 PS. Thanks to an extra optional 20 mm of ground clearance and 17" alloy wheels (18" as an option), the Multivan anAmericana is optioned up with tinted rear windows, smoked LED rear lights, a Highline radiator grille and the anAmericana logo on the B pillars. hen destined for a harsh life, the buyer can include the optional che uer plate floor in the passenger compartment and ru er floor mats. The 201 range of Transporter T eries variants o ers a choice of engines and driveline of five diesel engines and two petrol engines, delivering between 62 kW and 150 kW.

THE X FACTOR

rom whichever aspect you choose to evaluate the current performance of Mercedes-Benz, the company is kicking goals. It s car sales are continuing to climb skywards, its new Vito and V-Class van range is one of the best on the market, there s a new Sprinter under development, and a new range of class-leading heavy trucks ust going on sale. The only market segment where it didn t compete was that of the ute, and now that s all about to change. There s a trend these days towards brand synergies as different manufacturers link their research and development divisions together to produce similar, but different, models in a particular category that shares platforms, engines or components. inking Mercedes-Benz with enault is not a new idea. Both brands have been selling a small van based on the same mechanical basics and marketed in rench form as the angoo and in Germany as the Citan, supposedly an abbreviation for City/Van.

The Concept X-Class will only be available as a dual-cab and it will be sourced for the Australian market from the Nissan manufacturing plant located in Barcelona, Spain.

Going up a notch in size and being able to carry more than one tonne as a payload sees the same family relationship, this time in the ute segment with Nissan marketing the Navara and Mercedes-Benz adopting the dual-cab, coil spring suspension version from Nissan and calling it the X-Class.

In an interview with Delivery i e in Stockholm, Sweden, Dr. Dieter Zetsche, chairman of the board of Daimler AG and head of Mercedes-Benz Cars personally explained some of the finer details surrounding the display of the first two versions of the yet to be released Concept X-Class ute.

In its top-spec models the driveline will consist of a pure Mercedes-Benz V diesel at Euro and using AdBlue, a corresponding MB 4MATIC automatic transmission and permanent all-wheel-drive, again using the MB system that is derived from that used in the Vito light commercial vans.

ecognising the importance of the Australian market, which has adopted the ute as a ma or player in vehicle sales, Dr. Zetsche elaborated on the details released to the general market.

Mercedes-Benz has modified the existing Nissan Navara ladder-frame chassis, reinforcing cross bracing for upgraded strength and to enable higher performance results from the redesigned and uprated coil spring front and rear suspension. The Nissan design of five-link rear suspension has also had the Mercedes-Benz treatment, with completely upgraded spring and damper settings to enable a payload of up to .2 tonnes and maintain a towing limit of . tonnes.

The two concept models on display represent the higher end of the range spectrum, which takes the Nissan Navara N as its base and then builds on that design through its alliance with enault/Nissan.

FEATURE Large diameter 22-inch rims and 35 x 11.50 tyres differentiate the “Powerful Adventurer high-spec version of the Concept X, which showed its front and rear electric winch mount.

Mercedes-Benz is also using its own rear axle in this topspec model, featuring a wider track that assists stability at speed in an overall package that combines all the current known MB safety features. Centre and rear differential locks are also included to aid off-road ability. While buyers of the top-spec models get the full Mercedes-Benz experience, there will be alternative 2WD and 4WD models added to the range in time, and these will be offered for sale with four-cylinder diesel and petrol engines together with additional manual and automatic transmissions sourced from the existing range of Nissan powerplant options, but still retaining the dual-cab configuration. No single-cab or space-cab versions will be built with a Mercedes-Benz badge on the bonnet, as the company believes that future growth in the lifestyle and luxury combination depends on dual-cab versatility.

The interior of the Concept X has experienced a complete redesign in line with the current MB look and feel used in the C-Class sedan. The inclusion of all the Mercedes-me communications and entertainment systems shows how systems have today become modular for selection and fitment into different vehicle designs. Meanwhile, the exterior virtually bristles with safety systems such as -degree radar and sensor monitoring.

segment, the decision to include four-cylinder engines and optional 2WD/4WD rather than permanent all-wheel-drive in the lower priced and lower spec d models re ects the driving force of the German manufacturer to achieve global sales across all options of the ute s potential customer base. The current sales success of Mercedes-Benz with its passenger cars has provided the impetus for MB to examine other available options, and with the new ute it plugs one of the remaining gaps in its overall product line-up. The success of Concept X-Class is predicated on the assessment by MB that sales of utes will increase by percent by 2 2 on a global basis.

THE X FACTOR

Although not announced officially, Dr. Zetsche, together with Volker Mornhinweg, head of Mercedes-Benz Vans, agreed that an AMG high-performance version was highly possible within a reasonable timeframe of the official launch. It should be stressed that the two different models presented for evaluation were, as the description indicates, examples of the concept of the future model. The chassis on display featured drum rear brakes, and this, in Delivery’s opinion, would be replaced on the production models with a four-wheel disc brake fitment, especially since the rear axle is sourced from Mercedes-Benz. That scenario would probably not relate to the additional 2WD/4WD selectable models that can be expected to feature the standard production Nissan drivetrain and powerplant with one petrol and one diesel four-cylinder engine from Nissan, together with Japanesesourced manual or automatic transmissions.

Mercedes-Benz Australia is currently considering whether the X-Class ute will be available only through MB passenger vehicle dealerships or additionally through commercial vehicle dealerships when it hits the Australian market. Other key markets will be Argentina, Brazil, South Africa and Europe. Dr. Dieter Zetsche said, “With the Mercedes-Benz pickup, we will close one of the last gaps in our portfolio. Our target – we want to offer customers vehicles matching their specific needs. The X-Class will set new standards in a growing segment”.

HI-RIDING D-MAX A payload of 1060 kg and a 1790 kg kerb weight means it is not going to be accused of lightweight status either, altho gh the latter fig re is more svelte than some of the segment sales leaders. The 4x2 High Ride scores points for a 3.5-tonne braked towing capacity (its lower-slung siblings stop at 2500 kg), although the anti-lock equipped braking system has retained the rear drums to work with the front discs. The safety features list extends to stability and traction control, emergency braking assistance, dual front and side airbags, three-point seatbelt for all four seating positions, with pretensioners and load limiters for the front pair. But, sadl missing is a reversing camera and parking sensors with a further demerit point being the fitment of halogen headlights rather than the Pro ector versions of the high spec models. Loading the tub up and securing the load using four tie-down hooks in the tub does settle the ride substantially. Just under 300 kg of timber had the D-Max riding almost demurely b comparison to its iggl and livel road manners when running with an empty tub. Longer loads can be accommodated by dropping the tailgate, which extends the load platform without obscuring the number plate. The nladen ride is not be ond the segment average for vehicles with a ladder frame chassis and leaf-spr ng rear end set-up for lugging a load, but it’s neither the best nor worst in the class. The 16-inch steel wheels are wrapped in all-terrain tyres and controlled by a front suspension that has double wishbones, coil springs, gas dampers and a stabiliser bar, while the rear is held p b a set of heav -d t allo -steel oversl ng the low-rider has ndersl ng springs leaf springs and gas dampers.

The powerplant la s claim to an AD laborator -derived f el se fig re of l 00 m on the combined c cle, rising to 9.7 in the city and falling to 6.9 on the highway. With the exception of Ford – which charges comparatively obscene amounts for some of its LCV machinery – the cheaper (but not better) Navara RX kingcab model (which is priced $5000 cheaper in 4x2 and 4x4) will cause price tag consternation. The arrival of Holden’s new Colorado, the return of Great Wall with its Steed (and a promise of more models) and a resurgent Toyota means Isuzu has its work cut out for it, at least until a new-model D-Max makes its way to that brand’s second biggest market. The D-Max remains one of the old faithful of the ute brigade – not the most powerful, or most lavishly equipped, but a workhorse that doesn’t feel like it’s going to shirk the work.

Will a V6 diesel be enough to take Amarok to the next level? Stuart Martin reports

A substantial injection of horsepower, a makeover for the front end and upgraded interior headline the changes to Volkswagen's Amarok.

The German brand's load-lugger has long been a yardstick for ride quality, refinement and tray capacity since its launch here in 2011, but the installation of a V6 (donated to its cause by Audi) has shot it to the top of the list for power and torque in the segment. The new powerplant will be available at a starting price under $60,000 – $59,990 for the Highline, or $67,990 for the Ultimate, pricing which keeps it attainable for buyers. "The most important thing about the price point is that it stays within range, I never thought it would to be the cheapest, but as long as it's within range of the competitor, the Ranger or the HiLux," said VW Commercial Vehicles director, Carlos Santos. The 90-degree, 3.0-litre, turbodiesel V6 has 24 valves, a variable geometry turbo, high-pressure direct-injection (using multiple injections per stroke) and produces 165 kW between 2500 and 4500 rpm. Peak torque of 550 Nm is on offer between 00 and 2 00 rpm and it lays claims to an fuel economy figure of . litres per 00 km. The additional 15 kW of urge from its overboost function is available when more than 70 percent throttle has been demanded by the driver and is for up to 10 seconds. 28

ISSUE 69

Volkswagen claims the overboost function is of particular use between 0- 20 km h and offers up an overtaking time of . seconds between 0 and 20 km h 100 km/h is reached in a claimed 7.9 seconds. The engine has been upgraded for light commercial use, with the addition of a larger-capacity sump with a honeycomb insert, different pistons and cylinder linings for off-road work and the vibration damper previously a light-alloy version – is now made of steel. With production yet to ramp up in the brand's South merican factory, the first examples of the -powered Amaroks will come from Hanover in Germany. On the subject of supply in the short term, production numbers may be limited to between 300 and 400 vehicles from the launch to the end of the year and will probably leave a waiting list well into 2017, according to Carlos Santos. "We're landing 400 here this year, we have more orders than that already," Mr. Santos said. The brand has well over 7300 expressions of interest in the new V6-powered Amarok, with almost three-quarters registering for a test-drive – interest not previously seen for any Volkswagen model. "With 70 percent of the leads being for test drives, we think based on normal conversions from a test drive being one in four, given we have supply, the challenge is delivery times, and we're looking at three or four months wait – we get more consistent supply later in the year," he said.

UPPING THE ANTE

The brand has more than 41,000 Amaroks on the road here – Australia being the largest export market for Amarok – and, despite being the oldest ute in the current marketplace, has continued to grow and will set a record sales year. The Euro-6-compliant V6 is the model's only powerplant in urope, offered in three power levels 20 kW 0 m, 0 kW 00 m and the kW 0 m being brought here – but the twin-turbo four-cylinder range will continue to be sold to Australian buyers in the lower-spec models. The V6 powerplant will feature in the Highline, Ultimate and marok s new flagship ventura model, which will appear during the second quarter of next year. The new engine is an auto-only proposition at this point, teamed to the carryover eight-speed auto with paddleshifters in Ultimate guise). Customers looking for a manual gearbox and dual-range transfer case bolted to the will have to wait until near the end of next year for a six-speed manual. The updated drivetrain puts the marok well ahead of its predecessor s 2 kW 20 m twin-turbo four-cylinder, as well as the revamped olden Colorado’s kW and 00 m, issan’s 0 kW 0 m avara, the 0 kW 20 m offered by i ux and the kW 0 m five-cylinder in the ord anger and a da T- 0. The W offering will have the prestige ute high ground until ercedes- en brings its -Class to market, but not here until 20 it will reportedly run a kW 20 m turbodiesel V6.

The new W drivetrain has been accompanied by a cabin and features upgrade, adding the touchscreencontrolled satellite navigation system, digital radio reception, full smartphone integration, power-adjustable front seats, leather trim, dual- one climate control and heated front seats. The styling of the face-lifted model remains familiar squared off and conservative with a new-look grille featuring twin chrome bars and inheriting some of the styling cues from its passenger cousins. The top-spec interior has also borrowed much from the passenger car range, with a new upper dash panel and trims, offering appa leather for the first time in the segment. Safety features now include tyre pressure monitoring and the multi-collision braking system, added to the six airbags, reversing camera, parking sensors front and rear and six airbags from the previous high-end models, but no curtain airbags, or no adaptive or active impact prevention systems. The Amarok is brought to a halt by four-wheel disc brakes 2 mm up front and 00 mm at the rear a feature W says is appearing for the first time amongst its competitive set. our-wheel discs are a rarity in the class and thus far only seen on the revamped reat Wall Steed, but the Chinese light commercial is certainly not viewed by W as a direct competitor.

The update has brought about a change in the gross combined mass – rising to 6.0 tonnes – with the braked towing capacity remaining at 3.0 tonnes, which VW said puts it close to those with a 3.5-tonne capacity in realworld terms. "If you load it to the maximum of 3.0 tonne, and it has a GCM of 6.0 tonnes, with a tare mass of around 2.2, the residual payload is around 800 kg, some of our competitors have a larger towing capacity but the payload is much lower," said VW's product marketing manager, Nick Reid. 30

DELIVERY

ISSUE 69

"What we also have to remember is the tare mass is one driver and 10 litres of fuel, not passengers or other equipment, it's a useable payload for practical applications," Mr. Reid added. The rear tray capacity remains largely unchanged, retaining the 1222 mm width between wheel arches for loading a pallet, something it remains uniquely able to do in the class.

The first drive of the upgraded marok with the was completed in examples of ltimate, although side steps were removed and the wheel tyre package reverted from inch to a -inch wheel tyre package for the off-road section.

UPPING THE ANTE

s a result, the ride quality might be a little more pliable than the standard ltimate wheel tyre package, but we ll have to wait for a standard car for a definitive verdict the test vehicles rode firmly but with good bump absorption and compliance. The rear end could skip a little on serious bumps when unladen, but a 2 0 kg load in the rear was found to settle the rump nicely. Cabin refinement already a hallmark of the current marok remains remarkably good for a light commercial, thanks no doubt to the quiet nature of the new powerplant in an already quiet vehicle, which even when imparting its full force was far from intrusive. The incessant surge of torque was a highlight, particularly the subtle but strong part-throttle in-gear acceleration that could almost but not quite make the overboost function redundant at full throttle the big ute also delivers considerable but civil thrust. The four-wheel-drive section showed the absence of a transfer case doesn t preclude it from getting solid amounts of dirt and dust in its wheelarches, with the off-road mode helping the suite of electronic safety systems deploy off-road mapping to maintain forward momentum while retaining the vehicle s subtle nature. espite the sporadically-strenuous driving off-road, tempered by some high-speed twisting roads and open road cruising, the vehicles were all in the realm of or 2 litres per 00 km at the conclusion of the launch drive, testament to the long-legged eightspeed auto and its ability to hold th gear in the face of steep ascents. The only complaint is a carry-over concern from the preceding model the steering is direct but feels over-assisted, which puts it behind the ord and a da for top tiller status. Some of the plastics used in dash and door panels look reasonable and robust, but on the hard side, which detracts only a little from the overall feel of the spacious cabin. The addition of the has put marok firmly back at the top of the C ute list priced within close range of the anger as it now has the powerplant, if not the active safety features, to take the ustraliandeveloped Thai-built ord head-on.

If you’ve made the transition from incandescent globes to LED lighting then you’ll not need convincing of the amazing upgrade in power and performance, right through the range from small hand-held torches up to additional lighting for heavy trucks.

LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT

Once you take the LED path for many applications the benefits outweigh any disadvantages, the only point of contention being where the longer beams of the xenon products still outperform the brilliance of the LED alternatives. Start with the Hella Miniform, a great pocket-sized LED inspection light that doubles as a pocket torch. Complete with a flip-out integral stand, a strong magnetic base and a foldout hook to hang off something handy, this little wonder emits 250-lux at half a metre distance, with a choice of two intensities. t recharges off a S port or via a mains adaptor provided with the unit. Adding auxiliary lighting to the front of a light commercial can produce problems when it comes to the actual mounting of the light because of a lack of suitable positions, unless it’s also intended to fit a bullbar or nudge bar.

LIGHT ENTERTAINMENT Hella has some great additions to its Australian line-up, just in time for Christmas.

Hella has come up with a strong mounting system that incorporates a steel support behind the vehicle registration plate on which can be mounted a Hella LED Driving Lamp ar. lternatively, the light bar can be mounted by drilling two holes in the bumper bar or lower grille support area.

Available in two lengths, 350 mm and 470 mm, with 12 or 16 high performance LEDs, these light bars are fully waterproof, weigh just 700 kg or 950 kg and yet they provide a significant upgrade in lighting output. ecause of Hella’s expertise with lens design, these light bars effectively work like a conventional round driving lamp with the lenses aligned in a strip that focuses the light emission onto the road ahead.

Delivery magazine has been evaluating these LED driving lamp bars and can verify their performance and their ease of fitment, making them a quick fix solution where mounting space is at a premium. These are long-distance projection beams, not to be confused with the low-cost Chinse manufactured light bars that just illuminate the area immediately in front of a vehicle when driving off-road.

When mounting areas are available, such as a bullbar, Delivery can also highly recommend the LED Luminator round driving lamps. Available as a compact unit with a width of 181 mm or in full size mode of 222 mm, they project a beam of 1-lux value up to a distance of 580 m. For those wanting a greater depth of beam performance, then it’s a move to the Predator Xenon Gas Discharge driving lamps that take a pencil beam out to 900 m at a value of 980-lux. Where space is still limited, or if there are concerns over inhibiting airflow through a radiator, the allye 4000 Xenon Gas Discharge compact units feature a casing diameter of 170 mm compared with 222 mm, a narrower depth of 139 mm against 153 mm, but retain spectacular performance rating up to 1-lux at 1000 metres for a pencil beam, or 500 metres for a spread pattern. With more than 2 , Nissan EVs sold worldwide, the company is at the forefront of this fast-developing sector and ideally placed to apply its expertise to explore new vehicle sectors and consumer opportunities in the future. When docked in place, the battery packs are constantly in charge mode, using power generated by the vehicle s 2. -litre 4 kW/4 Nm twin-turbo diesel engine to ensure they re ready for emergency use when re uired. Each is a 2. kW unit and utilises seven Nissan EV battery modules inside a weatherproof machined aluminium housing. Two input charge sockets and five output discharge sockets are integrated into each battery pack, which features recessed ends to allow it to be carried easily. In a rescue environment they could be used to operate specialist cutting or heavy-lifting e uipment, and have been specifically designed to provide an efficient alternative to a petrol generator. With zero emissions and no ammable fuel, portable battery packs can also be used in enclosed spaces such as a building or a cave. Additional power sockets are integrated into each side of the pick-up s load bed.

EUROPEAN REPORT

As part of its Intelligent Mobility vision, Nissan is working to explore how its pioneering EV battery technology can be integrated further into society. These prototype battery packs provide a real-world example of how it could be applied to new sectors, to provide cleaner, more sustainable power solutions. Occupying the rest of the space in the load bed are two pull-out fibreglass trays. The shallow upper tray contains lightweight items such as two-way radios, ropes and an axe. The lower tray is deeper and narrower, storing larger items such as an oxygen tank and resuscitation kit, life jackets and buoyancy aids. Key to the car’s rescue role is a drone, a DJI Phantom 4 with an operating ceiling of 6000 metres. Weighing just 1380 grams, it can fly at speeds of up to 20 metres per second for close to 30 minutes and can relay images back to the concept car. These are viewed on a pop-up HD screen hidden in the load bed wall.

Compared to the standard Nissan Navara, the overall ride height of the Navara EnGuard Concept has been raised by 50 mm, creating extra ground clearance and further enhancing the vehicle’s ‘go anywhere’ attitude. The wheel arches feature bespoke overfenders, with new moulded side steps between them. The passenger compartment features a completely redesigned roofline, which is 136 mm higher than on the standard Navara. It incorporates a powerful 360-degree LED lighting rig, with emergency blue strobe lights fitted to the four corners and visible from any angle. Matching strobes are integrated into the top of all four overfenders, plus in the redesigned front fog lamps and redesigned rear light clusters. Choice of colours and their location was given very careful consideration during the vehicle’s development, with special focus on its role as a rescue vehicle. For example, Nissan research revealed fluorescent green is the most visible colour in daylight, and also most easily identifiable by people affected by colour-blindness. Having it on the wheels and side steps means it’s quickly spotted by the headlights of approaching vehicles. Being based on the top-spec Tekna trim grade means the Navara EnGuard Concept comes with many standard features that would be useful in a rescue situation. These include the NissanConnect sat/nav system for finding the fastest route, plus dual-zone climate control and heated seats for occupant comfort. Most useful would be Nissan’s pioneering Around View Monitor, a 360-degree camera system that displays an unobstructed bird’s eye image of the vehicle and its environment on the dashboard screen. It’s an ideal tool for rescue workers, allowing them to navigate difficult off-road terrain without causing delays by having to get out of the vehicle.

FEATURE

Can you really take a workhorse from the building site to a proposed World Heritage site for a holiday? Stuart Martin goes trekking in the Flinders Ranges with a mob of Mitsubishi Tritons. Australians are not – generally speaking – a nation of workaholics, and its adoption of 4WD light commercial utes has not come about purely because we have a plethora of boggy worksites. It’s a lifestyle choice where we need a vehicle capable of carrying and towing tools – sometimes to areas of limited traction – as well as taking toys and tykes to similarly-slippery situations. There’s no better demonstration of this side of the LCV equation than a recent trip to the Flinders Ranges in South Australia’s mid-north, piloting a mob of Mitsubishis, the main focus for Delivery being the Triton 4x4 dual-cab utility in varied guises. finalist and contender for Ute of The Year for the past two years, the current crop of Tritons wear competitive price tags that would please the bean counters, as well as capabilities and capacities that won’t shame it at a boat ramp or building site. Starting the road trip north from Port Augusta in a $40,990 GLS manual dual-cab, the transport stage was a 00 km sealed-surface jaunt that demonstrated the refined in-cabin experience – wind, engine and road noise all well-quelled, or, in the case of the powerplant, not overly intrusive anyway. The six-speed manual gearbox in the GLS was consistent with previous examples of the breed, delivering a clean shift and a solid feel to the action, although the powerplant didn’t demand an excessive number of shifts on the open road, happily lolling along in 5th and 6th in the bottom third of the tachometer, just below the beginnings of the boost range. The alloy intercooled 2.4-litre with 16 valves – eight of which are variably-timed intake – also has a variable geometry turbocharger to offer up power of kW at 00 rpm, but the lack of apparent effort on the open road cruise is more due to the peak torque of 430 Nm at 2500 rpm.

Real-world fuel economy in the mid-to-high single digits is not out of the realms of possibility in this sort of terrain, although less likely if the back seat and tray are laden to the point of getting close to maxing out the payload, for this spec being 950 kg. Braked towing capacity of 3100 kg – obviously when not sporting 950 kg of payload – and an overall gross combined mass of 5885 kg equates to the shouldering of a solid load when required. The ride quality, via 17-inch alloy wheels and ridgestone ueler T tyres, suffers for the lack of a load in the tray, but not as much as some. Nor does it drop its rump toward the road like others such as the Nissan Navara NP300 (although its maker has recently released a model update with changes to the underpinnings, including the coil-sprung rear suspension .

The Triton is within segment norms when hitting the rougher stuff, juddering only a little and rumbling quietly across corrugations in the unsealed roads, but refinement is one of its selling points. nother attribute is the flexibility of its W system, which offers rear or four wheels operating on the bitumen by way of an unlocked centre differential it allows the security of extra traction in sealed surface driving, as well as wet or unsealed surfaces.

The changing road conditions in the linders anges amply demonstrate the usefulness of this variable system rear-wheel-drive on the fast dirt can be amusing but not always wise, but loose gravel on verges or in between wheel tracks can be a trap, and, while the stability and traction control are worthwhile back-ups, not having to call on them at all is a more relaxed manner of travel. ore testing terrain is in store at Willow Springs station, a pastoral lease of 0,000 acres that also offers some challenging W tracks and some of the region’s if not the nation’s most panoramic and stunning 0-degree vistas along its Skytrek W route.

FEATURE But it takes a decent 4WD with decent clearance, underbody protection and low range to get there, and the Triton does it without fuss. In fact, much of the climb was completed with zero throttle – as an experiment, the GLS was left in first gear low range and left to idle up a loose, steep, rock covered ascent. It completed the task, dropping on occasion to as few as 600 rpm but it never shirked the task given. Keeping things clear of the hard rocks strewn throughout the journey is a 30-degree approach angle, ramp-over measurements of 24 degrees and a 22-degree departure angle, although the latter is hampered by the low-slung towbar installation. Ground clearance is listed at 205 mm, which isn’t classleading, and neither is the 500 mm wading depth, but it didn’t cop too many knocks during the Skytrek run. The manual gearbox doesn’t run away downhill either, delivering solid engine braking without the need for an electronic hill descent system; switching to the top-spec xceed automatic and there’s one less cog on offer, but the upgrade in equipment is accompanied by a jump in price to $47,790.

The GLS already has a features list including a leatherwrapped steering wheel with phone, audio and cruise switchgear, xenon headlights, dual-zone climate control, side steps, mud flaps, cruise control, power folding exterior mirrors, a touchscreen USB/Bluetooth equipped sound system with digital radio reception (not much good in the outback but nice around town), and reach and rake steering adjustment. If you want to step up further, the Exceed gets leather trim for the seats and around the cabin, keyless entry and ignition and power adjustment for the driver’s seat. It’s also equipped with a larger (seven-inch) touchscreen displaying 3D satellite navigation, rain-sensing wipers and dusksensing headlights, and a rear diff lock, but there’s no rear vents in the dual-cab range, which would be an issue in searing summer conditions in this region.

FLINDERS KEEPERS Safety gear includes seven airbags – the standard six plus one for the driver’s knees – antilock brakes, stability, trailer sway and traction control, hill start assistance, and a reversing camera (standard on GLS and Exceed), but no rear sensors as standard.

The chance of getting off the beaten track on holiday in a tool-of-trade ute is a far easier ordeal than it once might have been a more refined, car-like package doesn’t erase the chances of queries from the back seat about estimated times of arrival.

The itsubishi’s warranty covers five years or 00,000 km whichever comes first , with four years or 0,000 km of capped-priced servicing required every 2 months or ,000 km the first service for a x diesel is 0 and subsequent services jump to 0. ncluded in that price is a year of roadside assist that – on new vehicles – is extended for an additional 2 months each time the vehicle is serviced at an authorised dealer.

The Triton is not the most powerful ute on the market, nor does it have class-leading towing or load capacities, but sharp pricing, decent features and much-improved driving characteristics make the Mitsubishi a worthwhile addition to any tradie’s shopping list.

If you are the type of person that views the idea of replacing worn tyres as a grudge purchase, then it’s highly likely you leave the servicing aspects of your vehicle to your local dealership and basically hopes it never breaks down. Tyres are the components that literally keep your car on the straight and narrow path. They influence how the car moves, corners and more importantly stops. Yes, you can buy the cheapest-priced replacements in town, but the chances are they will lack the technology that provides the best cornering, handling, performance and ultimate safety, plus they’ll be noisy. In the long term the cheap tyre will not stay the lowest-priced alternative as it will wear out more rapidly and need replacing earlier. Service intervals are on the increase, meaning you have to concern yourself less than used to be the case even perhaps ten years ago. From a time when every 5000 km meant an oil drain, replacement filter, new spark plugs and a brake adjustment, it’s not unusual to see those regular service intervals now extended out to 25,000 km and, in some cases, even further.

Reliability is now expected, but even though the engine makers have extended their service intervals, there’s still the need to check some items regularly, such as tyre pressures, fluid levels such as the oil, water and windscreen washers, brake lights, indicators, parking lights and headlights. There’s one more component that seldom gets a mention, and that’s the battery. While the function of the battery remains to provide an electrical charge to the vehicle, there’s so much else that’s changed along the way that the battery has now taken on a lot more responsibility for the overall performance of the vehicle. No longer is it a weekly requirement to unscrew the caps from each cell and check the level of the electrolyte. Today’s sealed battery cases minimise evaporation, but there are still things that need to be checked, albeit now more commonly on a monthly, rather than a weekly basis. The modern auto battery has to cope with so many variables of power requirement that are way different from simply making sure the starter motor turns over the engine and the lights work. It’s also now imperative that you fit the right battery for the job and don’t buy on the basis that the cheapest will be the most appropriate. That premise changed a long time ago. A recent visit to Century Yuasa, Australia’s leading aftermarket supplier of vehicle batteries and the sole manufacturer of batteries in this country, provided much food for thought.

CROWNING GLORY

Batteries may be a fit and forget item until they fail. But, if you want the best, then Australian-made Century Batteries should be your first-thought purchase.

At its Brisbane factory, Century Yuasa manufactures 1.5 million batteries each year, providing a high percentage of its annual total sales of 1.9 million units. With 600 employees, this is a viable and profitable ustralian manufacturing operation that ensures Australian motorists have the opportunity to buy Australian products that are designed not only for our conditions, but also for the specific vehicles we drive. Not all batteries are equal, and, as the experts at Century Yuasa are quick to point out, the technical abilities of different batteries make it now necessary to choose the appropriate unit for a specific application if you want to ensure that you get the best performance. For on-road SUV and 4WD application, choose the Hierformance battery, for an on-road and soft off-road S and 4WD choose the Ultra-Performance version, for heavyduty off-road W s choose the verlander x . f you are a truck operator, there’s a different battery design for short haul, around-town delivery trucks, compared to a further version for long haul interstate work in multi-trailer -double and road train configurations. Then there’s a version for marine use in boats and a smaller unit that’s ideal for motorcycles and ride-on mowers.

And there’s more, in the form of a unique tougher version that’s able to withstand the constant starting requirements of what manufacturers now call idle stop start or intermittent stop start SS when the engine shuts down, as the vehicle is stationary at traffic lights. The engine may not be turning, and even if it is, it needs to run in excess of 1000 rpm before the alternator delivers a charge in return to the battery, which during this period of inactivity is still providing the power for lights, heating, air conditioning and the entertainment system. atteries that supply the internal power requirements for motorhomes and caravans are yet another variation that demands a battery design that can specifically handle long periods of supplying constant power without recharging. These deep cycle batteries are a totally different design from a typical auto battery.

eing able to resist the affects of extreme heat or cold are just part of the features and benefits of a Century uasa battery. The double-layered lid and advanced labyrinth lid design aid in the retention and condensation of water vapour that is produced in the battery during operation and charging. It prevents leaks during tilting and vibration, and, if the battery is overcharged, the excess gases it produces are safely discharged by the integrated central venting system. The design incorporates an integrated flame arrester to prevent the risk of a reaction between oxygen and hydrogen. Water loss is reduced by 40 percent, and this in turn extends the service life of the battery by up to 30 percent. Century uasa has been making batteries in ustralia for 88 years. The company’s in-depth knowledge of the climatic and operating conditions that are unique to our country have been instrumental in the final designs of the batteries it makes here for our use. In Europe batteries need to be able to cope with minimum temperatures as low as -18 deg. C. In Australia the upper limit of temperature tolerance for Century batteries is +80 deg. C. The development work completed in Australia is what lies behind the ability of the new Overlander 4x4 battery. Its hybrid technology design, incorporating both calcium and antinomy plates, produces dependable starting power plus added semi-cycling capabilities. This allows the battery to handle the discharge from additional accessories without damaging the internal components and affecting the overall life of the battery. Furthermore, 4x4 batteries are subjected to pretty torrid conditions. Not just extreme hot and cold temperatures, but endless corrugations and bumps. These conditions create havoc for batteries, attacking critical internal components, which in inferior design batteries can lead to early failure. Century has addressed this with thicker full frame cast plates improving the strength and durability of the battery. Additionally, the Overlander has Century’s exclusive Platelock™ Technology, an adhesive that binds the battery plates securely together to provide superior vibration and impact resistance. This is a vastly different construction to your normal car battery, and essential if you want reliable power in your 4WD on rough terrain. All claims about the Century Overlander 4x4 battery have been tested at 75 deg. C. This is much hotter than the universal battery standard of 40 deg. C, and far more realistic to the underbonnet temperatures of Aussie 4x4 vehicles. 46

VIVA THE VITO

Working hard means any chance of respite is worth taking, so getting from job to job in relative comfort is a plus. How much you pay for it and what it’s worth to have safe, comfortable and capable transport for you and your equipment is also a question asked by tradespeople and fleet managers across the country on a daily basis. The Mercedes-Benz brand has several examples of Delivery Magazine’s silverware in its trophy cabinet, thanks to standard safety equipment and car-like driving manners key to the vans’ solid performances in the judging each year. The Vito won the 2011 title, but in its current guise is playing second fiddle to the larger Sprinter when it comes to racking up awards from this publication. We’re revisiting the big load-lugger in its 114 longwheelbase form, this time sporting Continental tyres instead of the Hankooks that were wrapped around the wheels when the ito rolled up for final award judging and attracted criticism for excessive road noise when travelling on typical course chip Aussie roads. A list price prior to on-road costs of $46,400 isn’t bargainbasement – it’s in the Ford Transit ballpark on price alone but the standard inclusions offset the top-end tag. Tick some option boxes and the price tag won’t take long to top $60,000 as the road test vehicle’s $61,350 demonstrates. For that outlay the maintenance schedule runs at 12 months or 22,500 km service intervals – with service plans on offer and there’s a warranty of three years or 200,000 km, whichever arrives first.

The road noise criticism was one suspected of being more a tyre than vehicle issue, so the first impressions behind the wheel of the Continental-shod Vito were better than we had previously experienced. There was still some road noise – even more so when traversing the traditional Australian coarse-chip rural roads – but it was not as intrusive as the Hankook’s howl. This earlier concern is indicative of just how a particular spec of tyre combination that works on uropean roads needs to be certified before releasing a vehicle onto a new market. The Continentals did feel stiffer in the sidewalls and passed on more smaller road imperfections to the chassis and cabin, but not to the extent of being difficult on a daily basis. Larger road undulations were absorbed with aplomb when laden, and it was not unruly even when the payload of 1130 kg was taxed only by the weight of the driver. The 3430 mm wheelbase of the LWB model, which tips the scales at 1920 kg, boasts a 6.9 cubic metre payload and able to be restrained using eight load anchor points. The optional auto boosts the braked towing capacity of 2500 kg, a 500 kg increase on the manual. Shorter and 50 kg lighter, the SWB variant claims 5.8 cubic metres and 1180 kg payload for the body that sits on a wheelbase of 3200 mm. Propelled by the double overhead cam 16-valve 2.2-litre turbodiesel four-cylinder engine, the Vito wears the BlueTEC badge and claims Euro 6 emissions compliance. Using common-rail direct-injection fuel delivery and turbocharging, it sends 100 kW at 3800 rpm (revolutions to which the engine is not overly averse) and 330 Nm to the rear wheels, the latter from just above idle through to 2400 rpm. Fuel use is a claimed 6.1 litres per 100 km for the optional auto (complemented by a stop-start fuel saver system), 0.3 better than the standard six-speed manual model.

FEATURE Emissions are 161 g/km of CO2 and an AdBlue-fed selective catalytic reduction function converts nitrogen oxides into water and nitrogen. ur time behind the wheel yielded a trip computer figure of 7.8 litres per 100 km from the 70-litre tank, at a 46 km/h average speed, which is commendable fuel economy given the city bias to our driving pattern and the highway bias of the ADR laboratory test. The power plant prefers a leisurely pace on the torque band rather than at peak power, but there was rarely a need for the redline as the torque – while not overly abundant – kept more than adequate forward momentum. The test vehicle’s seven-speed auto, for the most part, delivered smooth, if not super-swift changes, and wasn’t prone to hunting trips for the right ratio. With comfort, economy and manual modes, the driver gets the option of ‘manual’ shifts, but our stint in the vehicle did include a brief refusal to switch to manual mode or change gears with the paddles – the function returned eventually, but it was a curious change of heart. The cabin is austere but effective, although it misses out on some of the more creative touches seen in the some of the recent Renaults. Folding seat backs with mini ‘desks’, and overhead and underseat storage are largely absent from the Vito, in which the occupants make do with some dash-top document storage, a small conventional glovebox and several different-si ed door pockets. The Vito 114’s features list also includes air conditioning, a twospeaker sound system, Bluetooth, auxiliary and USB inputs, 16-inch steel wheels (optioned up to alloys), power windows, heated poweradjustable exterior mirrors, and cruise control with speed limiter function. What’s there all works well enough but the versatility factor is a little lacking. The driver can get comfortable behind the leather-wrapped (an optional upgrade) reach and rake adjustable wheel. The driver’s seat provides plenty of height adjustment behind a dashboard and centre stack that have been inherited from previous generations of ercedes- en passenger vehicles, and it makes the van’s cabin a decent place to be – the optional Becker satellite navigation (which is small of screen and low-res isn’t too difficult to use.

Instrumentation is all clear and simple, with the centre display controlled by steering-wheel-mounted buttons – some of the centre display menus are a little convoluted. For example, changing music tracks via the steering-wheel buttons when the digital speedometer is displayed takes a few more button pushes than it should. The test van had the optional bulkhead with window, which kept ‘booming’ from the cargo area down. Neither the optional rear barn doors nor the also-optional bench seat’s middle headrest do much for rearward vision. The rear doors open to 180 degrees or disconnect to 270 degrees to be held by magnetic catch on the side – the standard twin sliding doors can clash with the barn doors if folded to that point. While a useful cabin, cavernous loadspace and decent drivetrain are among the en highlights, the safety features list has enough to make an OH&S rep almost smile. The ito is now an C five-star vehicle with standard (from mid-2016) front and front-side airbags, as well as a stability and traction control system that also contains the effective crosswind assistance system. There are also sensors front and rear, as well as a reversing camera that gets a welcome wash if the rear windscreen washer-wiper is used. The rear towbar package also include a feature that sees the camera view tilt downwards onto the tow ball when coupling up to a trailer, and this is a major benefit for drivers that need assistance when reversing. The Vito also gets driver attention assist to detect inattention or fatigue, with the safety options list also including side curtain airbags. Additionally available in Australia is the optional collision prevention assist system that monitors the distance from the vehicle ahead and warns the driver if there is a danger of a collision and boosts braking force accordingly. Also contained within that package is the blind-spot and lanekeeping warning systems. The Vito is a comprehensive and compelling package in terms of loadspace, access and driveability, and is the pick of all the entrants for those looking for the best in class. But sharp pricing from other German brands and an entrenched Japanese entrant that’s tough to dislodge means the Mercedes has its work cut out as it mounts its campaign to increase market share.

HYUNDAI RETURNS The South Korean company that excels in the passenger car market has regrouped for a renewed attack on the Australian truck buyer – Dave Whyte reports.

HYUNDAI RETURNS

It never ceases to amaze me how many manufacturers want a piece of the Australian truck market. Given the limited number of trucks sold across many different weight segments, the number of players in the field is remarkable. Just as remarkable is the number of new entries into the market. Most of these now come from Asia or India, with Great Wall, JAC, JMC and Mahindra coming to mind. A recent announcement from Hyundai Commercial Vehicles Australia (HCVA) heralded the re-arrival of Hyundai in the light truck race, and the promise of a heavy-duty model on our shores next year. Australians are no strangers to the Hyundai brand, with the Korean manufacturer having forged an enviable reputation, and gained massive market share, in the passenger car market over recent years. Those of you with a good memory will also remember Hyundai trucks being available here for a short period many moons ago, before Hyundai Motor Company Australia (HMCA) dropped the light truck range, and focused its efforts on selling the car and light van products that have proven so popular. While HMCA was selling those light trucks in Australia, the Peninsula Motor Group, under the guidance of Dilip Kumar, was the best performing dealership in Australia for yundai trucks. t seems fitting then, that the eninsular Motor Group should take on the import and distribution of the current model Hyundai trucks through a newly formed subsidiary, Hyundai Commercial Vehicles Australia (HCVA). HCVA have an agreement with Hyundai in South Korea, and will act as an agent, importing, selling and supporting Hyundai’s light and heavy-duty truck products.

The problem with many of the newer brands to the local market comes in the form of product support, as many price-savvy buyers have learnt, with servicing and spare parts seemingly being overlooked by importers. The C deal seems to be a little different though, with dealerships around the country coming on board before the product hits our shores, and the promise of national support for the new products entering the country. At the recent announcement of the new agreement, Dilip Kumar, managing director of HCVA, described the event as, “A historic day for HCVA and the Peninsula Motor Group”. He continued, saying, “Opportunities to secure a major and well respected brand such as Hyundai are very rare, and highly sought after. The Peninsula Motor Group has been a Hyundai dealer since 2008, and, as such, we are aware of the esteem and popularity of the brand with Australian buyers. So when the commercial vehicle distributorship became available, we immediately registered our keen interest in securing it”. Having secured the rights to distribute Hyundai commercial vehicles in Australia, the emphasis then turned to choosing which products would be brought into the country, and offered to ustralian buyers.

FEATURE “While we had sampled the product range on several occasions in Korea as part of our negotiations, it was time to put each vehicle under the microscope, and select the best possible specifications to suit ustralian buyers, r. umar said. “Once we had a product line-up secured, we spent many months visiting existing and new dealers, to detail our vision and long-term commitment. That commitment included the building of a new headquarters for C , which includes training facilities, offices for administration, sales and marketing personnel, and a distribution centre. “ s you can imagine, this is not an inexpensive exercise, r. umar said. “We have committed to this venture for the long term . Hill start aid and lane departure warning are also on the list, along with steering-wheel-mounted cruise control operation, a heated seat for the driver and four power outlets to operate all the techno gadgets that drivers use today.

arious factory fitted bodies will also be available on the range, including vans, refrigerated bodies down to -2 degrees , tray bodies steel or aluminium and a three-way tipper that will be available early 20 . aving seen the refrigerated and van bodies on display, it would seem the quality of construction and finish is very good. n a smart move by C , the factory fitted bodies will also be covered by the vehicle warranty, which covers the first three years or 200,000 of the vehicles life and includes roadside assistance for that period. To back up that warranty, C has already established a network of 2 dealers across the country, with plans to add another in 20 . ost of these are truck dealerships, with technicians to be trained on yundai trucks at the C training facility in Sydney. rders for workshop parts, according to C , will be despatched to anywhere in the country overnight using T T express. With all of this being in place before the first shipment of trucks arrives in ebruary, it would seem the management team at C has done its homework on supporting the product. While we haven’t yet driven the new yundai range, it would seem that C and eninsular otor roup have made a big investment into the future of yundai trucks in ustralia, and are keen to show ustralian customers just what the orean brand has to offer. aving launched the light truck range, they are confident of bringing the heavyduty cient prime mover into dealerships sometime next year, with a range of large vans and buses to follow. Having seen the success of these buses and vans overseas, and the market domination of the cient in orea, the re-emergence of yundai trucks into the ustralian market could well ru e a few feathers. With very competitive pricing , 0 for the SW with refrigerated body , it remains to be seen whether C can emulate the success of the yundai passenger car business, or whether the experience with other lowcost manufacturers has left a bad taste in the mouths of ustralian light truck buyers.

Mercedes-Benz links with robots and drones as it investigates options for improving delivery efficiencies. The requirement to deliver a package, parcel, letter or quantity of food to a consumer hasn’t really changed through the years, despite all the technology available in today’s electronic age. In the days when a horse was the quickest form of transport, the delivery of a letter was handled by a rider on a horse that either walked (standard service) or went at a gallop (express). Even 60 years ago the horse was still an integral part of distribution logistics, as it pulled a cart loaded with dairy products that the milkman left at the front doors of houses in the street. Although the horse didn’t know it at the time, it was the forerunner of autonomous distribution systems, as the horse knew where to stop and when to start as it followed the milkman from house to house. There were no electronic tracking wires embedded in the road surface or radio signals to control the horse, it accomplished its task usually as the result of a whistle from the milkman. rogress came in the form of an electric milk float, and immediately the milkman’s daily round took longer to complete. Whereas the movement of the horse was autonomous, the electric milk float stayed immobile until the milkman retrieved it and moved it forwards.

FEATURE The next progression in transport logistics was to cancel personal delivery services completely because the infrastructure cost of running a fleet of electric milk floats exceeded that of hay for the horse. The public gained access to their own transport and consequently assumed responsibility for collecting their milk, eggs, butter and cheese from the nearest shop. Now we have come full circle. With car ownership in an inner city becoming prohibitively expensive, the large supermarket chains have rediscovered how to deliver an order placed on the internet direct to the customer’s house. This has given rise to fleets of vans carrying pre-packaged, individual orders, already pre-paid, with the courier given a preferred timeslot to coincide with the customer. On the occasions when the customers need a vehicle themselves, they carshare using systems charged by the hour such as GoGet. n an effort to show what might evolve for the future, ercedes- en has been spending time and considerable effort to push the logistics of delivery to new levels by integrating emissions-free vehicles with programmable additions such as drones and robots in an attempt to revolutionise last mile delivery services. nder the ad ce programme, ercedes- en ans is evolving from the single perspective of being a van manufacturer into a supplier of holistic system solutions. The core of the adVANce programme is based on its “ ision an , as previewed to Delivery Magazine in Stockholm, Sweden, recently. t’s the first van worldwide to serve as an integrated concept for a completely digitally connected process chain, from the goods distribution depot to the consignee. FEATURE Innovative algorithms control robots in the supply warehouse that pick and pack within the fully-automated cargo space management, subsequently organising route planning for the vehicle and the delivery drones. Automatic order picking takes place at the logistics centre and consignments are loaded into special racking systems. Driverless handling vehicles load the racks by way of an automated one-shot loading process into the rear of the Vision Van. On arrival at the destination, which is pre-selected by the Vision Van as being central to the deliveries required, the intelligent cargo space management system automatically selects and supplies the individual packages for delivery. These can then be delivered personally by the courier, flown by drone or carried to the destination by a robotised box on wheels that resembles an Esky. Each drone has a payload capacity of 2.0 kg and can fly in a radius of 0 km, and a text message to the addressee announces the arrival of the package for acceptance. According to Mercedes-Benz, the savings for the courier service come from speeding up the loading process by using a pre-packed oneshot load from a roboticised unit. This slides the cargo into the rear of the Vision Van within five minutes of its arrival, thereby saving around 80 minutes per shift. The two delivery drones deliver more packages within the same timeframe and it’s claimed the numbers of stops and failed delivery attempts also fall substantially as a result of drone delivery, which is not dependent on the consignee being at home. The automatic supply of the next required package to the courier is also claimed to increase efficiency by up to 0 percent. The quest to provide holistic system solutions extends beyond robots and drones and will result in a new service called ercedes , which launches in the first half of 20 and bundles professional services on a digital platform with an innovative connectivity solution (Mercedes PRO connect).

MAN OF THE MATCH

of Match The Volkswagen Heavy Commercial Vehicle Group, under the leadership of ex-Mercedes-Benz chief Andreas enschler, is currently flexing its corporate biceps through the purchase of a major share in the S-based avistar corporation, manufacturers of International Trucks. The benefits offer efficiency gains that arise from opening up a supply chain availability that includes engines, transmissions and technology together with an entry into the high-volume orth merican market.

With Mr. Renschler having an oversight across the team players in the group that includes Truck and us, Scania Truck and Bus and divisions of VW such as the Brazilian operation that produces the Constellation heavy truck range, there’s a strong likelihood that activity will also develop down the light commercial vehicle spectrum to include vans in the mix, and what better place is there to start than with the all-new T

FEATURE During a recent whistle stop visit to Australia for the launch of the MAN D38 heavy truck range, Delivery Magazine was able to interview Roger Penske who confirmed that the organisation in ustralia was actively looking to introduce the TGE, although no date for its launch had yet been confirmed. So, as the rollout of the new MAN TGE gets the green light for Europe, Delivery has been taking a deep interest in how the Australian public will once again accept a light commercial with the MAN badge on the front grille. The public debut for the MAN TGE took place at this year’s IAA Show in Hanover, competing in the traditional category of light commercial vehicles with a gross weight rating between 3.0 and 5.5 tonnes. The TGE will in future be MAN’s primary solution for everyday light transport tasks in the transport and haulage sector, with two wheelbases, three roof heights and three vehicle lengths on offer. Chassis configurations include closed van models, vans with windows as well as open single and crew-cab variants.

Transmission options are between a six-speed manual and an eight-speed torque converter automatic, and drive systems vary between front-wheel and rear-wheel-drive plus all-wheel-drive. The TGE panel van is available with a normal roof, high roof or super-high roof across wheelbases of 3640 mm and 0 mm offering internal floor to roof height dimensions of 1726 mm, 1961 mm and 2189 mm. With the largest version also available with an extended overhang, overall lengths range from 5986 mm to 7391 mm. The sliding components and internal guides made of reinforced ylon and Teflon are self-lubricating, thus limiting wear and tear and ensuring a longer lifespan. A ladder rack and cab protection with reinforced fastening holes protects and secures long items and heavy loads. rear ladder rack can also be included as an optional extra.

Maximum resilience to wear and tear as well as weather conditions is guaranteed by the chrome-plated and lapped pistons of the hydraulic system, which is operated using an analogue push-button panel with a spiral cable. C toolboxes with a gravity lock system complete the design. sing a closed delivery van with a short wheelbase and medium high roof, the Swabian bodybuilder, usmarshausen, demonstrated how the load securing systems lex ack and roSafe allow for an innovative load-securing concept. FEATURE The left-hand side of the cargo area hold was fitted out by racking and storage experts, Sortimo, with the company’s latest FlexRack range for systematically storing and correctly securing parcels and other transport goods. FlexRack has a high load-bearing capacity of 120 kilograms per unit. If the racks are not in use during transport, they can be folded away and secured.

The right-hand sidewall was fitted with lashing rails, which allow for fast securing of any other bulky cargo using Sortimo ProSafe lashing straps. The Sobo rip roSafe floor is equipped with a range of built-in lashing eyes that can be used with both lashing straps and tie rods. Thanks to the built-in lashing eyes in the floor, cargo can be optimally positioned and secured in accordance with axle load distribution regulations. Four additional square-shaped tie rods ensure that even large deliveries are always kept well in place.

crowning gglory When it comes to materials handling, Crown Equipment has the ultimate pick-up line.

It’s a rarity that a slogan can live almost as long as a product, and yet the TV and radio jingle that runs on the line of, “There is nothing like a Crown, for picking it up or putting it down,” ranks with the very best of brand advertising. Crown Equipment in Australia celebrates over 50 years of manufacturing equipment that literally does pick things up and put them down again, albeit in a different location. Delivery magazine spent a day learning just how clever and innovative the company’s products have become in today’s logistics and materials-handling industry. To its credit, Crown Equipment is very much a one-stop provider of product movement solutions, and in recent years has added a racking and shelving division that enables the company to take a holistic approach to a client looking for answers.

72

ISSUE 69

From a global perspective Crown Equipment is a privately-owned family company, manufacturing in 18 locations in 11 countries worldwide and employing 13,200 staff. With five regional headquarters, of which Sydney is the centre for the sia acific region, Crown quipment is the fifth largest manufacturer globally in this segment, with an annual turnover of S 2. illion. As Australian industry transitions from a manufacturing base to that of importing completed products from overseas, there has undoubtedly been a change in the way that warehousing and distribution co-exist. The diesel and natural gas powered forklifts that once formed the backbone of all materials-handling operations are gradually being replaced by faster, emissions-free electric units. This is just one of many areas where Crown Equipment has developed its products ahead of those of its competitors, whether the customer is looking at buying, renting, leasing or financing its lift and stack equipment.

CROWNING GLORY

“There is a change in the way our customers manage their requirements in materials-handling equipment, with many clients now looking at leasing and rental options rather than outright purchase. This move enables the client to have a fully-maintained unit for as long or as short as a particular contract requires, all for a fixed cost, said Craig Kenchington, general manager of marketing for Crown Equipment. “We have 12,000 units in rental application and the duration can vary from one day to five years. We also have a fleet management team working in the Crown nsite and Technology Development Division that is responsible for a further 10,000 units in private ownership as in third-party logistics with companies such as infox, , Coles, Toll, Woolworths and their subsidiaries like Dan Murphy and Thomas ux.

“The 10,000 units in private ownership are monitored by nsite through nfo ink, which connects with the lift trucks to provide real-time data on their mechanical performance, frequency of impacts in the field and operator behaviour. nsite ensures operators and lift trucks work together to improve their material-handling processes, general business practices and, most importantly, productivity. “ ive years ago the market mix was 0 0 with internal combustion and LPG gas versus diesel, but today we are seeing the preference for electric units now running at 0 0 in their favour. The improvement in battery technology in units up to . tonnes has driven that growth, whereas the over . tonnes sector is all diesel powered. “Technology is certainly changing the efficiency levels, and our Quick Pick Remote system enables an operator to move the pallet truck forwards remotely to the next pick location by pressing a button on a special control glove. This saves the operator having to walk back to the unit after picking the package or part, added r. enchington. A quick run through some of the latest products starts with the Wave elevated work platform. The original Wave unit enabled operators to reach to heights of up to five metres. t could turn on its own radius, fit through a standard doorway and travel twice as fast as walking speed to do a range of jobs safer, faster and easier than ever before.

FEATURE The latest Wave 60 continues to perform all of these functions but with greater ease thanks to its improved user interface, while the new AC-drive motors developed by Crown enable it to travel with increased manoeuvrability at speeds of up to 8.0 km/h. The Wave load tray supports up to 90 kg, while the load deck holds up to 115 kg. An optional, powered-load tray features infinitely variable positions that allow operators to easily make height adjustments for flexibility with any load. It also integrates with InfoLink, Crown’s wireless operator and forklift fleet management solution. Customers looking for the most efficient heavy-duty counterbalance forklift for warehouse and manufacturing with loads ranging from 1800 to 3000 kg are well served by the Crown FC 5200 Series. The FC 5200 helps operators get more done in less time, using faster acceleration, travel and lift speeds to move up to 10 percent more per shift. Its dual-drive motors and steering axle geometry allow for a smaller turning radius so operators can handle heavy loads in tight spaces without causing extra tyre wear. The tighter turning radius enables the truck to be used in the same space as a conventional four-wheel forklift, while also allowing room for a larger battery that provides 15 percent more runtime per battery charge. Crown’s e-GEN™ braking benefits runtimes while reducing the need for maintenance compared to traditional friction brakes, further improving the cost of ownership. Ondemand power steering means that power is only used when the steering wheel is turned, avoiding energy loss. Fingertip-control hydraulics operate on a similar basis while providing streamlined ergonomics. Crown’s Intrinsic Stability System uses integrated sensors and controllers to constantly monitor and control key forklift functions and movements to enhance stability and safety. The new Crown MPC 3000 Series combines a highlift, clear-view mast with an outrigger-free counterbalance design. Powered by Crown’s AC traction motor, it is capable of travelling up to 12.5 km/h and lifting 1200 kg to a height of 4.3 metres. It can lift full-capacity loads (at a 600 mm load centre) to the full height of the mast, and automatically adjusts cornering speed and acceleration depending on steer wheel angle, fork height and load weight, for stability. Crown has added to its sit-down counterbalance electric lift truck range with two new models: the SC 6000 Series in three-wheel and four-wheel models and the heavy-duty FC 5200 Series.

ISSUE 69

The new Crown MPC 3000 Series combines the benefits of an order picker with the advantages of a counterbalance forklift. It features a high-lift, clear-view mast with an outriggerfree, counterbalance design and an ergonomic ride-on platform – a combination that creates a versatile, multipurpose lift truck capable of performing tasks usually requiring more than one piece of equipment. The unique new Crown RT 4000 Series rider pallet truck line, which is available in stand-up or sit-down models with load capacities of up to 2000 kg, offers unique flexible control arrangements. These new products pave the way for a number of new Crown semi-customisation technologies that are currently in development and nearing completion. While the technology may be cutting edge, its rollout will continue the company’s longstanding effort to help customers manage supply chain costs by increasing performance and productivity while providing unprecedented levels of operator and pedestrian safety. “Becoming a one-stop shop was all about build productivity and adding value for our customers and our adaptation of more advanced technologies is another important part of delivering the best we can for them,” Mr. Kenchington said. “Additional services we provide include on-the-job operator training at our head office on a purpose built training area, as well as providing training options at our client’s location. “Crown is also able to supply complete warehouse infrastructure set-ups through Crown Warehouse Solutions (CWS). This division is Australia’s only specialist racking and shelving company with experience beyond the physical storage fit-out. Through CWS we add value for customers purchasing material-handling equipment through the provision of pallet racking, shelving, consumables and warehouse accessories, and consumables such as tools and pallet wrappers. “We understand the specific business requirements when it comes to operational efficiencies. We understand the environment in which your employees have to work, the equipment they work with, and how your whole operation has to work cohesively,” Mr. Kenchington added.

Amidst the fanfare of the release of the new HiLux there are shortcomings noticeable in the form of not including higher safety levels across the range. A variation of payloads also serves to confuse buyers as to its overall ability. With increasing pressure from other Japanese manufacturers, HiLux may not be able to maintain its segment leadership for much longer. Service Inter: 10,000 km

Transporter Single Cab Chassis Dual Cab Chassis

A hugely attractive specification with Amarok available in single-cab form as a six-speed manual or dual-cab with the eight-speed auto. Trim and equipment levels have been upgraded. Our preference is for the auto over the manual which gave it the accolade of Delivery Magazine Ute Of The Year 2014. Transporter single-cab and dual-cab are replaced by the new T6 in the third quarter of last year. Amarok is where VW is focusing its attention. It’s clever technology, good interior appeal and five-star crash rating may tempt you away from Japanese alternatives. Service Inter: 15,000 km

China’s latest pick-up line The LDV T60 is yet another new Chinese manufactured product that its maker LDV expects to become popular in global markets. Competing in the highly popular Ute segment, the LDV version made its debut at this year’s Guangzhou International Motor Show, ahead of a claimed release onto the Australian market in the second half of 2017. The LDV T60 will arrive in Australia to increase the company product line-up that includes the V80 van range and the G10 van and people mover. This month the LDV G10 van extends its coverage of the Australian one tonne van market with the arrival of Turbo Diesel variants with both manual and automatic transmissions. Debuting as a double cab Ute with four-wheel drive, the full range will include single cab and extended double cab as well as the double cab, and two tray lengths. Along with selectable high and low range four-wheel drive, the LDV T60 will offer two-wheel drive and a choice of three gearboxes with both manual and automatic transmissions, petrol and diesel engines and two suspension heights. The drivetrain will also offer three difference performance modes, normal, eco and power.

DELIVERY MAGAZINE ISSUE 69

Built on an all new platform, the LDV T60 has a high tensile steel chassis protected by galvanisation, advanced wax injection and new paint processes to minimise stone chip damage, enabling LDV to offer the T60 with a ten year through rusting warranty. LDV expect the T60 to score a five star ANCAP rating when it is tested Australia thanks to its advanced design, six air bags, double pretensioning seatbelts, the full range of chassis electronic safety systems as well as parking sensors, rear view camera, 360 degree cameras and a fatigue driving alarm. The success of any Chinese brand lies in the overcoming of previous poor reputations concerning a lack of customer service support, delayed availability of genuine parts support and poor resale values.

The new HiLux misses out on higher safety levels when compared to Ford’s Ranger. Chinese home AWAY from home on wheels As China looks for ways to solve its housing crisis, van maker LDV, a division of SAIC, chose the Guangzhou International Motor Show to debut its motorhome based on the cab chassis version of the LDV V80 van. LDV has decided to abandon the traditional motorhome production method or providing a vehicle to conversion or bodying to a motorhome maker, deciding instead to invest more than US$50 million in new factory to build complete motorhomes which will then be offered for sale b LDV dealers as part of the LDV range.

Costs will be reduced by fully consolidating the build process, which happens in one factory and in the hands of one company. With the complete vehicle being sold by LDV dealers, they will be the one stop-shop for the complete ownership process, from purchase through to servicing, and this will be for the whole vehicle, not just the base vehicle on which the motorhome is built. In addition, there will be a larger dealer network to support the complete vehicle. While that premise might sound a sensible way of maintaining your motorhome, Delivery Magazine’s experience suggests that the expertise involved in maintaining the cabinetr and interior fitments incl ded in the average motorhome require specialist skills, not generall present on a vehicle service wor shop oor Similarly, the importers of Chinese manufactured vehicles need to satisfy Australian buyers of their long term intent to s pport new models with s cient stoc inventories to facilitate service and maintenance requirements without unexpected delays.Resale values also need to be established as part of a long term benefit for b ers and sellers alike.

Engine changes to the Caddy circumvent the exhaust emissions debate but it’s petrol only at this stage. Transporter T6 has improved styling but still suffers from the DSG automated manual transmission rather than offering a conventional fluid auto with torque converter. The upcoming Crafter is an all-new design in a product sharing exercise with MAN. Built in Poland, specs include front-wheel-drive and rear-wheel-drive, manual and automatic transmissions.
