WHAT MAKES DUBAI SO SPECIAL?

For me, it’s an amalgam of things. The way that people from all walks of life can feel at home here. The way that the city is always striving to make the impossible possible, all while inspiring its residents to do the same. The way that with each new season, Dubai becomes a magnet for exciting new concepts, from world-class international hotels to homegrown restaurants. But I know that Dubai’s versatile appeal means that everyone has their own reasons for falling in love with this remarkable city.

Never, in my eight years of living in Dubai, have I seen so many people looking to make the move to this ever-changing land of opportunity. In fact, a report earlier this year by Henley & Partners forecast that the UAE is expected to welcome 4,500 new millionaires this year alone.

And with those specific newcomers in mind, we present our ultimate guide to living your best money-no-object, oh-so-boujee life in Dubai. We know that there’s more to this city than Beyonce-approved penthouse suites, James Bond-style supercars and multi-thousand Dirham set menus. But there’s no denying that Dubai’s blowout experiences add to the city’s star power. So whether they’re part of your day-to-day life, or you fancy living like the 1 per cent for the day, our ‘Only in Dubai’ guide to once-in-a-lifetime experiences is waiting for you on p17. This issue also pays tribute to another clique of hard to impress individuals – the no-nonsense instructors behind some of Dubai’s toughest training sessions. From calorie-busting HIIT classes to core-crunching Pilates, meet these gym class heroes, and their grueling workouts, from p29.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Returning to an old favourite with dinner at… Coya Dubai

Coya has not only stood the test of time on the city’s burgeoning dining scene, it’s also remained at the top of its game. It had been a while since I’d visited, so when a friend suggested dinner, I jumped at the opportunity to return. It still has that tri-factor of beauty, well-executed Peruvian dishes and top service.

Telling everyone about Jumeirah Al Qasr’s new Indian restaurant…

Atrangi by Ritu Dalmia

I recently dined at Atrangi by Ritu Dalmia, and, oh wow, was I impressed. Dishes from various regions in India dot the fine-dining menu and I was left nostalgic from the home-style flavours used. Across the venue you’ll find cute design touches and the view at sundown reminds me of home.

Checking out the swankiest new cocktail bar… Agora

I love a good cocktail, particularly one created by a mixologist that very obviously takes pride in their craft.

Recent opening Agora, at The Dubai Edition, is on-message. Each cocktail that I tasted ignited sparkly eyes and happiness within me. I’ve got three words for you – wow, just wow.

Taking on the world… one printed sock at a time

I wish I had a large collection of printed socks. Growing up, wearing mismatched socks to school was a simple yet annoying method of rebellion to frustrate my parents (not at all because I couldn’t find the right pair). At the moment, I’m obsessed with a pair of funny puzzle-printed socks that I purchased from a little store in DFC, and I’m on the hunt for more inhabitants to my sock drawer. The game is afoot.

Revelling in retro sweet revery with… Candylicious

Keen for a dose of tuck shop flashbacks? Candylicious’ current retro sweet celebration, featuring candy that first appeared in the 50s, 60s, 70s and 80s (available until the end of September) is giving out all the retro Willy Wonka feels, with none of the work place accidents.

Staying cool with…. Ray Ban’s Original Wayfarer Classic

Wayfarer sunnies are still cooler than cool. Available in colours aplenty, but the green lenses on polished black are the OG variant and have been featured on faces and screens for over fifty years. I’m a fan because of their wider, heavier frames that can roll with rough handling.

Packing the sunshine with me with the help of… Nobody’s Child

You may have already heard the news, but just in case, British fashion label Nobody’s Child has officially landed in the UAE. Nobody’s Child is a sustainable and affordable women’s fashion label known for chic and stylish printed dresses, and linen suits, worn by the likes of my fashion muse, Sienna Miller.

Understanding what all the hype about Steven Yeun is with… Beef

I’m late to the station, but I’ve officially boarded the Steven Yeun appreciation train. I’ve become obsessed with his latest television release, Beef, and I’ve never been more entertained by people being just absolutely despicable. Yeun’s Danny and Ali Wong’s Amy are as nasty as they come but in a broccoli-in-your-teeth sort of way. You can’t stop watching.

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Through MY EYES Candy Fanucci

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite hidden gems, to must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Candy Fanucci, founder of surf lifesaving and community group, Pirates Surf, (@pirates.surf). Here, she shares recommendations from her more than twenty years of putting smiles on Dubai’s young faces.

When the weather is good there’s nothing better than a breakfast picnic on the beach. Gecko cafe on Kite Beach, where we train, does a cute acai bowl that I like to take down to the water’s edge. @geckodxb

I love anywhere with a connection to nature, like JA Hatta Fort Hotel where we go hiking and the peacocks roam free. Also Anantara Sir Bani Yas, which is home to the most incredible wildlife, including gazelle, giraffe and even cheetah all roaming free on the island. It’s not quite Africa but it’s a taste of home for me.

I switch off through exercise and my favourite new thing is padel. It’s a great way to unwind even though you’re running around! WPA in Al Quoz is my second home. I’ve also got into weekly ice baths with Mr Ice on Kite Beach. Sitting in a tub of ice, focusing solely on breathing is a great way to switch off!

I love the little places that make Dubai tick. Xparkjr is a play area for kids but it’s also my office and I get to take care of the animals. And we recently discovered Eleven Green for the best burgers.

I know I’m biased but I’m passionate about getting more people outside. We’re so lucky here, the coastline is just simpy stunning. But I’m also quite new to desert camping and it’s a pretty magical experience to be out amongst the dunes and under the stars.

I’m still blown away by the gorgeous skies over Kite Beach at the end of our sunset session surrounded by my Pirates Surf community. It’s my happy place. Even after 13 years of coaching, I never take a day or sunset for granted. @kitebeachdubai

Dubai isn’t all Beluga caviar, Bitcoin-wrapped Bugattis and Balenciaga bling. It has a soul, it’s blessed with otherworldly natural beauty, and the mature cultural scene of a city well beyond its own young years. But because, by well documented case studies, it does do the high life rather well, and with an ever-growing number of six zero heroes amidst its inspiring spires, we felt the time was right to test what those blessed with excess have access to here. We’re jumping in with the jet set, tagging along with the trust fund kids, and making like the Monopoly Man, all to show you how to live like a millionaire in Dubai…

drive like james bond in an aston martin

With all those digits burning a hole in your crypto wallet, one of your first stops will likely be picking out a new ride. And, sure, you can go for something flash and obvious like a neon Lambo, but there’s nothing that says disposable income in quite the same sophisticated tones, as an Aston Martin. It’s what James Bond would do. So, purely in the name of journalistic research, we borrowed the keys to a new DBS Superleggera Volante. It has a 5.2-litre V12 engine delivering 715BHP, and will set you back a cheeky Dhs1.3 million + VAT. But this, in fact all language and numerically dense data, is utterly incapable of transcribing the experience of driving it. The fighter jet feels from the Mach-something acceleration; the goose flesh shivers summoned from each wildcat roar of the engine; the dropped-jaw gaze of valet drivers; the sartorially refined haute-couture, interior; the smells, the lines, the primal joy, all of it, everything about it, makes you feel a million bucks. The only problem, Mish Monnehpenneh, is that we’re not sure we can get back in a Pajero now.

invest in gold

We feel like this might be Dubai’s spirit vending machine. Yes, thanks to the novelty Gold to Go ATMs you’ll never be caught without casual bullion again. These machines allow you to buy anything from a 2.5-gram, 24-karat gold coin to a wasta flex one-ounce gold bar. There’s even an internal computer capable of updating the prices every 10 minutes to reflect realtime fluctuations in the market. UAE locations have included Dubai Mall, Atlantis, Souk Madinat and Emirates Palace Mandarin Oriental (Abu Dhabi).

Charter a super yacht

shop for something sparkly at gold and diamond park

This city has a magpie-like passion for things that shimmer and sparkle. If it shines bright like a diamond, it’s part of the dress code for the Forbes List and fabulous in Dubai. And if you want to upgrade your own gem game, you could do a lot worse than heading to the Gold and Diamond Park on Sheikh Zayed Road. There’s a whole mall full of precious metals and polished rocks to covet, with options to custom design and bespoke your bling. For a classy ‘if I won the lottery, I wouldn’t say but there’d be signs’ look, head to Cara or Damas. @goldanddiamondpark

Guests can book flights to destinations within a 12-hour flight. How much is it? You know the rules, if you have to ask… comeplayfly.com

When in Dubai, the high-earners often tend to take to the high seas. And if you’re determined to get involved in a ‘my deck’s larger than your deck’ contest, you’re going to need a bigger boat. A super yacht in fact. There are a number of charter companies to choose from in Dubai, but Balthazar Yachting drop anchor with absolute sea monsters. Their top-of-the-line 282ft Chakra comes with a sundeck jacuzzi, swimming pool, gym, massage parlour, piano, its own beauty salon, outdoor bar, elevators, a crew of 30 and accommodation for up to 36 guests. If the frenetic pace of Dubai living leaves you craving a millionaire-shortbread-crumb of solace, there are some sure-fire off-shore bolt holes for you to find your equilibrium in. But if you’re in the market for a more permanent pied-à-terre – why not buy an island, or a bit of one at least. The Kleindienst Group’s Heart of Europe development consists of a six-manmadeisland network with an armada of floating ‘seahorse’ villas. The feature highlights of the seven-bedroom, five-floor Beach Palaces on ‘Sweden’ include an infinity pool with two jacuzzis, private beach, snow cave, coral garden and an upturned Viking vessel/observatory on the roof. All for just Dhs125 million. thoe.com

Doing a desert safari is a rite of passage in Dubai, it also seems to be the right of all first time visiting friends and family to make you do it again. But how luxe can sand, wadi bashing and falconry get? Hold our gold leaf karak, we’re about to go all Bezos on your to-dune list. Arabian

A private dinner in the sky at Shangri-La Dubai

While many Dubai hotels offer intimate spots for a private dinner, from beachfront setups to exclusive private dining rooms, few have the commanding views of ShangriLa Dubai’s 42nd floor terrace. Backdropped by exceptional Burj Khalifa views and a panoramic skyline that looks so good it could have been photoshopped, guests can curate their own menus for any occasion. From a family get-together to celebrate a birthday, to a swoon-worthy proposal when only the best will do, this is the kind of spot that makes for an unforgettable setting. A signature golden Ottoman steak at Nusr-Et

Thanks to Nusret Gökçe’s viral saltsprinkling video back in 2017, he’s become somewhat of a household name in the world of premium cuts. His Dubai steakhouse, a sleek eatery within the Four Seasons Restaurant Village, is a meaty ode to tasty tenderloins, sizzling striploins, and the finest fillet mignons. But if you want to go all-out at this emporium of over-the-top pieces of meat, then you’ll want to order the giant Ottoman steak, a slab of thick bonein ribeye with mustard marination. If that wasn’t extra enough, this 1,750g cut comes slathered in a layer of gold leaf, and is yours to enjoy for Dhs5,000.

A multi-sensory tasting menu at Krasota

From Vladimir Mukhin, of Netflix’ Chef’s Table fame, comes Krasota. A tasting menu that’s so avant-garde it blurs the lines of gastronomy and madness, this self-described ‘gastro-theatre’ is as much about visuals and narrative as it is the delicate eight courses it presents. Each course, or act as Krasota calls it, pays homage to a different renowned artist of the 19th and early 20th century, and is served up at a 20-seater spherical table against the backdrop of some seriously show-stopping multimedia theatrics.

A chef’s table experience at Gaia

Gorgeous Gaia needs no introduction, consistently regarded as one of DIFC’s most beloved eateries. But if the elevated surrounds of Gaia’s elegant dining room just won’t do, then book the chef’s table. A private dining room that’s set adjacent to the kitchen on the lower ground floor, this is a space for guests to be cared and cooked for while watching the culinary masters at work. Whether ordering a la carte or creating a bespoke menu, expect the finest and freshest Greek flavours in an intimate and refined private setting. Live like the A-Listers at Atlantis The Royal

The chosen address of Beyoncé and Jay-Z for their week-long Dubai getaway earlier this year, the Royal Mansion at Atlantis The Royal is a lesson in show-stopping suite life. A two-floor emporium of only the finest luxury experiences, this dramatic signature penthouse is one of the world’s largest hotel suites. An entertainment room with a 98” LED TV screen, a sumptuous terrace with glittering infinity pool and panoramic sea and skyline views are just a handful of the wow-factor faucets to this hotel room. WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

CALLUM NICHOLLS

Don’t let that smile fool you: this trainer teaches some of the most gruelling workouts in the city at 1Rebel

What’s your favourite restaurant in Dubai?

Krave. It’s healthy and tasty. What’s your go-to activewear brand?

ALLIE MCLAUGHLIN

When did you realise you wanted to be an instructor?

After I did my first yoga teacher training, I realised it takes a special person to be an instructor. I was told over and over again, I have the ‘it’ factor to be a great instructor, but I didn’t own this until I completed my training.

What is your favourite part about being a barre instructor?

It’s simply so much fun. I love to see our clients’ faces when they are going through some of the hardest positions (the cut-eye is hilarious), but also the sense of accomplishment and pride they have when they finish something they thought they could never do. I also love telling cheesy jokes, because they have nowhere to go and have to listen to me!

What sets Barre Effect apart from other studios?

The instructors. We seriously have instructors with over a decade of dance and barre experience, and you can’t get that anywhere else in Dubai.

What’s your favourite workout in Dubai?

When I’m not at the barre or the gym, I’m doing yoga at Matcha studio in Dubai.

When you’re not working or working out, where are you?

I’m with my kids. But they are actually harder than my work, so I consider my job a break.

Random fact about you?

I figured skated for almost 13 years. Allie teaches barre on Tuesdays at 9.45am and 11am. @alliemclaughlin

Talk us through a typical 1Rebel Reshape class

It’s 45 minutes of the most fun you can have. It’s a full body blitz with a mixture of strength and cardio. What is your favourite part about being a 1Rebel instructor? Being given the freedom to help all our clients every day. What do you have on your playlist? Huge house and trance tracks, but lately some old school rap and hip hop that’s been known to get me singing along. Do you have a particular standout class memory? Not one in particular, but I love seeing our clients run faster and lift heavier over just a short period of time. Seeing them feel more confident in their own skin makes me proud of what we do.

I mean, I’m happy with anything, but if I had to choose it would be lululemon.

Random fact?

I used to be a hair model in my teens. Oh, and my birthday is August 7. Callum practically lives in the 1Rebel gym at ICD Brookfield. Find his classes on the 1Rebel app. @callumnicholls7

FREYJA RAMPE

This Aussie-born fitness instructor is now sculpting bodies at new studio Revive

Revive is a new Pilates gym in JGE. What makes it special?

The instructors and our members of course! It’s so nice to finally have a beautiful studio within the golf estates that brings our community together. The fit out is chic and classy – who doesn’t love Pilates amongst the palm trees?

When did you realise you wanted to be a Pilates instructor?

I’ve always been into HIIT and strength training, and dabbled in Pilates from a young age. But it wasn’t until I attended a class in Australia that showed me a fun and engaging way of bringing both Pilates and strength together. I love being able to create fun and dynamic workouts that leave you feeling challenged and rewarded Do you have a favourite workout in Dubai?

ANDRE VAN ZYL GOW

This lawyer also happens to hold court at the award-winning Crank spin studio

What sets Crank apart from other studios?

For me, it’s the genuine community we’ve fostered and the way we make people feel. I always aim to make my Riders and Shapers feel a foot taller on their way out than when they walked in. I think we do that at Crank better than anyone else, both inside and outside the studio.

What’s the biggest challenge you face as a Crank instructor?

Our tech in the studios is pretty amazing – sometimes cueing an awesome lightshow into a beat drop takes a bit more co-ordination than I’m known to exhibit! But I think I pull it off reasonably well.

What is your favourite part about being a Crank instructor?

It’s what I call my ‘hour to empower’ –being part of the hour in the day that our Riders and Shapers dedicate to fitness in their busy lives is something special to me. It’s all the motivation I’ll ever need to put on the show they deserve when they rock up to the studio.

What do you have on your playlist?

As most people who know me will attest, I’m a bit of a ‘Pop Princesses’ fan, so you can be sure to find healthy amounts of Lady Gaga, Ariana Grande, Beyonce and co. in my Ride classes. I

If it’s not feeling that Pilates burn, you’ll find me in a Blackout class at Wellfit in JVC.

What’s your go-to activewear brand?

Oysho all the way!

What’s your favourite restaurant?

I love Asian cuisine and can’t find better than Akira Back at W the Palm – Dubai. Best food, amazing cocktails and the view isn’t too bad either.

When you’re not working, where are you?

You can usually find me on holidays by the beach with a cocktail in hand. Random fact?

DINA GHANDOUR

A much lauded yoga teacher who wants to help heighten your spiritual awareness one killer Jivamukti class at a time

Do you remember your first time at the front of a yoga class?

Yes, at my yoga teacher training in 2015 and it was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying at the same time. I felt like I had an out of body experience, but it flowed, thankfully!

How would others describe a Jivamukti class?

like to balance things out with some EDM and drum & bass. In Shape, we’re lifting heavy and I’ve got the big beats to match. Away from Crank, where else do you like to work out?

I’m a big fan of an old school spit and sawdust-style gym. Either that kind of place or I have a little home gym set up that I’ll fall back on if my day is a bit too hectic.

What’s your favourite restaurant in Dubai?

I’m probably the world’s most basic eater… so anywhere with a good kids’ menu, haha! I’m also a big fan of Carnival by Tresind in DIFC. Random fact about you?

I’ll only have meat and cheese on a burger. Told you I was a basic eater… Andre runs Crank sessions in Alserkal Avenue on Tuesdays at 7am and Sundays at 8.30am, and Shape classes at 8am on Tuesdays and 10am on Sundays. @force_de_loi

It’s hip, hot and holy. A typical group class will be on the sweaty side, set to a backdrop of upbeat music, with just enough spiritual sprinkling to uplift the soul.

Pizza or chocolate?

Chocolate, everything, always.

What’s your favourite workout besides yoga?

I’m really enjoying Pilates at the moment, and have been taking private lessons for a few years now. I also really enjoy a conscious movement practice called 5Rhythms with Lina Nahhas at Joint Space in Alserkal.

Do you have a favourite restaurant in Dubai?

I feel like I spend most of my life at Nette Café, which I’m not mad about because I love their matcha lattes and breakfast menu. However, I recently tried Fusion Ceviche in JLT and was blown away. The tuna ceviche is amazing. Where are you when you’re not working? Travelling, or travelling for work!

Random fact?

I travelled to Palestine (where I am originally from) for the first time not with family but with a touring contemporary dance company I was supporting in 2009. It was one of the most incredible experiences of my life.

Dina gets bendy at Matcha on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 8.30am and Saturdays at 10.30am. @wellnesswithdina

I was voted the 3rd best margarita maker in the GCC.

Freyja teaches Pilates at Revive throughout the week, and pre- and post-natal Pilates on Friday mornings at 10.30am and 11.30am. @freyjarampe

NOURIE ENNOR-GLYNN

A Barry’s Bootcamp OG instructor with a very loyal following

to enjoy a staycation. I told the hotel that I was going to have to do an Insta-live class. They were super accommodating and let me set up on the beach. We had over 200 people sign into that class where my son was in charge of making sure the phone didn’t fall. We did the workout from the beach under a palm tree with the sea behind us, and played music through a speaker next to my phone. It was magic! I’m pretty sure it was as memorable for everyone as it was for us.

CARYS ALMOND

While most of the city sleeps, this tough Brit is packing punches at UnderdogBoxn

Do you remember your first time at the front of the bag room?

Yes! I was nervous but then had a full class with about 12 other instructors there. The energy is electric when other people are there rooting for you to succeed, I loved it!

How would you describe your class?

The cheapest therapy in town. I want people to come in and box out all the negative nonsense occupying their mind. That’s what boxing does for me. It allows me to let go of the little things and focus on the important things.

How would others describe your class?

You’ve been at Barry’s for six years!

I know, I’ve been there since we first opened in 2017. I can definitely say it’s my second home in Dubai. Starting out as a Barry’s instructor back then was intimidating for all my colleagues and I as there was really nothing like this in the city and everyone had such high expectations.

What’s kept you going back into the Red Room?

Teaching both sides of the room (treadmill and floor) is never easy and requires a lot of concentration. Every class I’ve taught is a chance to get better at what I do. The more I run – and take – classes, the more I realise why Barry’s offers something inside that Red Room that no one else does. Seeing how far my clients have come over six years makes me love what I do. And seeing the smiles from our front desk, the fuel bar team and cleaning staff every day before I enter the Red Room makes it home. You want to be where everyone knows your name, right? Do you have a particular standout class memory?

My favourite moment was actually in lockdown when we took Barry’s online. Hotels finally opened up and my husband, son and I decided

Where else do you like to work out?

You’ll only ever find me at Barry’s and if I’m not there I’ll be riding the best bikes at Crank.

What does it take to make a great Barry’s instructor?

Musicality, love and understanding of movement, but above all, no ego! What’s your favourite restaurant in Dubai?

I have two: LPM and The Maine in Business Bay.

You have a legion of devoted fans. Would you ever open your own studio?

I think every instructor toys with the idea of opening their own studio and I definitely have in the past. After being in the industry for 10 years (pretty much since boutique fitness started in Dubai) and seeing how difficult it is behind the scenes, I’m resigned to the fact that I am happy where I am and have made Barry’s my home. It really is the best workout in the world – no need for me to go and try to compete.

Nourie teaches at Barrys DIFC on Wednesdays at 8.30am and 11.15am (ladies’ only), Fridays 8.30am, Saturdays 9.45am and Sundays 11am (ladies’ only). @nourie_ennorglynn

Great music, killer combos, the best rhythm rounds, and perhaps too many burpees.

Pick one: Neat Burger or Papa Johns?

You’ve done this on purpose, because these are my two favourite junk food spots! I’d have to choose Neat Burger – it’s the best vegan junk food for a cheat day. What annoys you most in class?

People on their phones. Be present in class or go workout in the gym.

What’s your favourite workout in Dubai?

I teach 26 classes a week so I don’t really have much time to try other workouts, but I do genuinely love the Burn classes at UnderdogBoxn. It’s a spicy mix of heavy weights, suspension training, air bike and rowing.

Random fact about you?

I’ve been diving since I was 16 and this year I’ve been scuba diving in Thailand, Fujairah and Muscat on a quest to catch a glimpse of whale sharks. No sightings yet… Carys heads up boxing classes on Monday at 7am, Tuesday at 5.30pm and 7pm and Fridays at 12.30pm. @almondmilkfit

REVIEW: CHEZ WAM

The next piece of the St Regis Gardens puzzle is a playful spin on modern fine-dining...

Chez Wam is not a French restaurant. The name may be French (it’s derived from the slang for at mine, chez moi). The man behind the menu may also be French (star chef Hadrien Villedieu helms the kitchen). But Chez Wam is not French.

It’s impossible to define the cuisine, so it’s best described as a solid Dubai menu. If Dubai is a cultural melting pot, then Chez Wam is a culinary one. Influences from the Mediterranean coast are as present as those from the streets of Tokyo, all of them come from the memory bank of the man behind the menu. We imagine that if we went round to Chef Hadrien’s for dinner, this is what he’d feed us.

The restaurant is small and intimate: dark woods, geometric terracotta tiles and plush chairs in varying shades of rust, marmalade and amber give Chez Wam a grown-up feel. There’s only half a dozen dining tables, set opposite a more relaxed lounge that’s backed by the bar. Then the space moves through to the completely

open kitchen, where a handful more seats create a front row to all the action. It’s here that the the pass is transformed into a culinary stage where protagonist chef Hadrien and his supporting act deliver their multi-act show.

The format encourages guests to share starters then order their own main, and it’s a format we like. From the starters we’re happy to oblige when the wagyu beef tartare (Dhs110) is recommended to us. A beef tartare may not sound very original, but this one is laced with wasabi peas and an impossibly light sesame dressing, topped with a thin crisp that we use to inhale every last bite. It’s a unique flavour combination that’s welcome and unexpected.

We move to more familiar territory with the lobster roll (Dhs154), which is a perfect showcase of high quality ingredients speaking for themselves. Although even this is given an unusual upgrade, with a perfectly toasted fluffy brioche roll encasing fresh chunks of lobster tossed in a zesty sour mayo and topped with chili powder.

The hokkaido scallops (Dhs145) are plump, tasty and seared to just the right level that means the outside has a

delectable crunch while the inside almost melts away. The trio of scallops are topped with broccolini, and neatly set in a creamy artichoke foam and subtle pickle sauce. Even a side of glistening butter glazed baby potatoes (Dhs35) are given a surprise smoky flavouring. A second main, the wagyu beef ribeye (Dhs355) also hits the high notes. It’s well cooked, and the rich accompaniments of confit garlic, caramelized shallots and a reduced jus balance each other well.

By the time we order dessert, chef Hadrien has stepped out from behind the kitchen and is making his way around every table, chatting to guests like he’s known them for years. It’s this personal touch that will truly set Chez Wam apart. And while we’re impressed by an Instagrammable tower of deconstructed lemon tart (Dhs43), with its layers of zesty lemon, crunchy meringue and a surprise raspberry sorbet at the centre, it’s the man behind the menu that leaves a lasting impact.

Chez Wam, St Regis Gardens, Nakheel Mall, Palm Jumeirah, Dubai, 6pm to 2am, Tues to Sun. Tel: (0)4 410 6707. @chezwamdubai

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Chez Wam’s menu will make you want to visit, but chef Hadrien Villedieu will keep you coming back.

LOCAL LEGEND:

ARABIAN TEA HOUSE

Of tea, tale-telling and time capsules…

The year, 1997. The place, Al Bastakiya, a thriving enclave within a Dubai that is, in many ways, still in the tender stages of its Burj-oning growth curve. The Arabian Tea House is open, bustling and already telling a story of culture that speaks to the homely heart.

Visiting the spot now, more than a quarter of a century later, makes for an escape to that bygone era. Inside these walls, not much has changed. People rush in from the surrounding streets to take refuge from the sweltering summers, but staying for the charm, a menu that celebrates the local, cups of aromatic karak and the unmatched joy of good company.

Arabian Tea House is an authentic nugget of Emirati dining in Dubai, a legacy kind that has preserved the traditional methods of how things ‘should be done’. The city has spurred and grown around it, but the Tea House remains stoically unmoved.

The building, a traditional construction, feeds into this old-world mystique. Inside

there is lowhanging foliage overhead and a blanket of white pebbles under your feet, beckoning you into the courtyard-esque interior.

Guests sit on white rattan chairs, hemmed by lace curtain and tasteful turquoise in the raised benches. There’s a sizeable tree smack in the middle of the restaurant, the trunk disappearing beyond the thatched roof.

Our meal commences and our first round of starters comes as hummus, falafel and bread that’s just reached the cusp of doneness. It’s warm and fresh, and pairs perfectly with the creamy, rich hummus (Dhs33). The falafel (Dhs33) is shatteringly crispy on the outside and fluffy on the inside, packing a flavourful punch in each small bite.

Harees, balaleet and an Emirati salad (Dhs42) – an Arabian Tea House special – make up our second set of starters. A wholesome porridge of meat and wheat, the harees (Dhs35) is earthen

and rudimentary, but absolutely comforting – and the balaleet (Dhs25), vermicelli cooked with cardamom, cinnamon and saffron – is sweet but doesn’t leave a lasting impact.

For the mains, the lemon lamb tikka (Dhs70) speaks for itself. Juicy, chewy chunks of lamb meeting citric tartness. The machboos rice with chicken (Dhs62) is a delight, flaunting the very best of Arabic spices.

The widely touted date cake and a plate of luqaimat are served for dessert, along with sharp karak tea. This is a tea house after all. The date cake (Dhs35) is a dense, uber sugary celebration of the Arabian culinary crown jewel. The luqaimat (Dhs30) are airy and doused in caramelised syrup, and how can we possibly go wrong with that?

At the end of our meal, we realise just how much time we’ve spent eating and that’s exactly what Arabian Tea House is all about. Fast conversation, slow and low dining, and loads of Emirati hospitality. Arabian Tea House, Al Fahidi, Dubai, daily, 7am to 11pm, Tel: (0)4 353 5071. arabianteahouse.com

BOOM BATTLE BAR

Welcome to Boom town, home of prosecco pong...

In a time where ‘dinner and a show’ occupies a large part of the new leisure venue stage in Dubai, it’s refreshing to see concepts that give you a starring role in your own show. That’s manifestly the mission at Boom Battle Bar, taking the old Stereo Arcade space in DoubleTree By Hilton Jumeirah Beach, which juggles the roles of being an industrially-edged chrome and neon bar, as well as an emporium of engaging hands-on, gamified activities. Here, you can eat, drink, be merry, and play a back nine of putt-putt golf.

The collection of activities available at Boom Battle Bar includes the aforementioned nine holes of crazy golf; axe throwing; interactive, projectionenhanced darts; beer (and prosecco) pong; and shuffleboard. We’ve also been told that karaoke will soon be dropping the mic here, too. It’s a compound offering that’s entirely unique in Dubai, with each of the interactive side hustles having been recruited for their competitive qualities, as well as their fun quotient. Hence the ‘Battle’ in the title.

The co-opping element lands the bar its cleanest bullseye. Whether you’re going with your mates or a date, being able to go head-to-head over a game of skill, and all for fun, taps into a core

aspect of primordial humanity. Friendships are strengthened (occasionally torpedoed) and the experiences have immense replayability, because your skills are only likely to sharpen with each encounter.

Prices are mostly based on activity slots rather than per person. You can get 60 minutes of augmented reality darts for Dhs225, 30 mins of axe throwing for Dhs215, 30 mins of shuffleboard for Dhs120, beer pong from Dhs195, and a round of ‘crazier golf’ is Dhs65 per person.

Of all the games on show, the axe throwing is probably the What’s On favourite. “Have you ever thrown an axe before,” asked Mary, our friendly expert instructor. I kept my suspicion that I might have been Ragnor Lothbrok in a previous life to myself and instead say “only once,

but never in anger”. Which in retrospect, raised its own red flags.

WHAT’S ON

And then you let the hatchets of war fly. Channelling a spirit delegation of ululating Comanche (though apparently taking a run up to the throw line is frowned upon), and sending handled blade after handled blade spinning into the wood with an eerily satisfying thud. There are various game formats to test your chopper form, with pixelated moving and static targets projected onto the board.

Prior to hurling, you have to sign a waiver and there is a strict no-alcoholbefore-axe-in-wall rule. A good thing, given the average post-brunch crowd.

With the twinkling lights around it, the menu isn’t likely to be the primary driver of traffic to Boom, but it’s certainly worth exploring. We ordered an intermission spread of chicken wings (Dhs53), halloumi (Dhs45), braised wagyu beef sliders (Dhs74), tenders (Dhs59) and some fully loaded nachos (Dhs52), and can confirm, it’s pub snack tapas that slaps.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

THE NICE GUY

Can this Nice Guy finish first?

A‘ no-photos’ sign. Wooden paneling. Dim yellow lights. A composite homage to the era of mob-run bars in West Hollywood, The Nice Guy opened its doors at Jumeirah Emirates Towers last year. The vintage interiors and American-inspired Italian dining proved an instant hit, and now the restaurant has a new addition to its weekly offering – a Saturday brunch with packages starting at Dhs399. What a nice excuse, we thought, for a return visit to the venue.

We’ve pulled up seats at a booth along the wall, and although it’s just gone midday, inside the central dining’s lounge’s deliberately cavernous, low-lit and windowless clutch – you’d be hard-pushed to notice. The session starts with an aperitif, our party orders a tajin-laced tequila-based cocktail, the

spicy sienna – a house signature, which is a finessed twist on a spicy margarita, alongside the dark and brooding passion fruit mocktail, dusk ‘till dawn.

They arrive at the table just ahead of the bruschetta and ricotta pancake entrées. While the bruschetta was light and fresh, it was the pancakes that truly shone. Soft, luscious, and proudly parading orange custard and shards of honeycomb, this for us, was a standout dish. With drink and dishes in full fervant swing, the band strikes up and takes our tapping toes on a trip to Havana. It’s busy, and vibey but in a compartmentalised way, with guests enjoying the relative privacy of their individual booths.

Though we weren’t ready to move on just yet, we select our mains – a barbecue

Impossible meat pizza, whole grilled branzino and a ribeye steak. Among the three, the grilled branzino was our fondest foil. Seared in yuzu kosho, a Japanese citrus chili paste and topped with a light herb salad and tangerine oil, the simple sea bream was a riot of fluffy fish flesh and deep aromatic twangs.

It’s only right to end with dessert. We recommend getting the seasonal sorbet trio and warm cookies served with milk. Though they sit on opposite sides of a sweet dish spectrum, they combine harmoniously to finish the feast.

By now, it’s nearing 4pm and our performers have amped the ambiance for a final fling with Bailando and Loca. Fellow diners emerge from their cocoon booths and strut their way onto the dance floor. It is, we reflect, a nice way to end a very nice afternoon.

The Nice Guy, Ground Level, Emirates Towers Boulevard, Saturday brunch, from 12.30pm to 4pm, soft Dhs399, house Dhs499, premium Dhs699. Tel: (0)4 276 9888. @theniceguydubai

ABOVE ELEVEN OUT OF TEN

It may be less than a year old, but with nominations in the 2023 What’s On Nightlife Awards (Best Cocktail, Best Rooftop Bar and Newcomer of the Year), Above Eleven has clearly made its mark on Dubai’s entertainment scene. These are just some of the reasons why…

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION

TURNING IT UP TO ELEVEN

Take to the lounge and the fiesta vibes continue with live entertainment on show every night of the week, including DJ sets and a percussionist for weekend sessions. There’s a cleverly curated menu of craft cocktails, including house signatures that celebrate Above Eleven’s Latin spirit heritage. Mixology like the brand new Pisco Sour collection, which includes blended liquid fuego from Dhs55 and an alluring range of exotic infusions.

It’s partly down to the address. Above Eleven sits on Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah’s rooftop, a stunning shoreline property found in Dubai entertainment epicentre, Palm West Beach. Revellers are invited to “rise above the heat and cool off”, and in doing so, earn themselves some of the best Marina skyline, JBR, Ain Dubai and Palm views available anywhere in the city. The easy, breezy terrace space is then the perfect perch for sundowners with mates, dates, the greats and even those who are always late. Rooftop, Palm West Beach, Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah. Sun to Thu, bar: 4pm to 1am, restaurant: 6pm to 11.30pm.

DINE TO MEAT YOU

The beauty of Above Eleven goes beyond the bar. Make your way past Aztec-artstained mirrors, banana leaf trees and caged rock sculptures to the venue’s dining room. Here, your edible expeditions are a tour across two hemispheres. With traditional Peruvian dishes such as arroz con pato made with boneless duck leg confit, and red snapper a lo macho, as well as stunning wagyu lomo saltado, seafood and vegetarian anticuchos (skewers). And from Japan, made-to-order maki rolls, nigiri, and sashimi; baos; tempura and cuts of wagyu fired on a robatayaki grill. Pro tip: the molten chocolate lava cake comes highly recommended to adios the meal.

TWIGGY FAMILY

Is this the chicest new family pool day in Dubai?

Ithink the term family-friendly is overused. I’m guilty of it too; if a venue allows children in before a certain time, it’s considered family friendly. But is it really? Do they have a menu catered to little ones with more options besides chicken nuggets and fries? Is it a safe place for children to actually have fun and let it all out? Is there any entertainment or a play area? Are the staff welcoming towards children? Is this somewhere you’d take your grandparents? Making parents feel at ease at a five-star beach club, isn’t as easy as it may sound...

You might think that Dubai doesn’t need any more beach clubs, but a chic family-friendly beach club that mama, papa, and the little ones will enjoy equally? Sign us up. And so, shortly after its opening, I found myself at the new little sister of Twiggy by La Cantine: Twiggy Family with my 5-year-old son, to see if it is truly family friendly...

Also located within the Park Hyatt Dubai, Twiggy Family has taken over the hotel’s Al Porto lagoon. The setting is sublime, overlooking the Dubai Creek Marina and Yacht Club, and, as with all things Rikas Group, there’s a noticeable attention-to-detail and easy elegance from the moment you walk in.

A little quieter and less flashy than its sister venue, Twiggy Family features a calming colour palette, stunning 100-metre lagoon, a waterfront restaurant serving Mediterranean-inspired dishes, plush shaded sunbeds as well as a cabana that fits up to six people, and a toddlertastic splash pad.

We sink into our loungers by the poolside (parent hack: sit between the splash pad and the lagoon), with only the summer heat serving as a reminder that we are, in fact, still in Dubai. We refresh with dips in the temperature-controlled water, iced coffee (Dhs35), and fresh coconut (Dhs55).

From paddling in the shallow water to jumping around on inflatables, building

sandcastles in the sand to running around in the splash pad, we decide we’re having too much fun to go to the restaurant and so order lunch to the lounger.

The watermelon and feta salad (Dhs79) melts in our mouth with refreshing sprigs of mint and the margarita pizza (Dhs81) is another hit: cheesy, crispy, salty with a perfectly cooked base.

The children’s menu has a decent variety of dishes from sandwiches to pasta, pizza to burgers, but on a hot summers day we decide to order the acai bowl (Dhs62) from the dessert menu, topped with fresh fruit. As the sun begins to set, we all find it hard to tear ourselves away.

Twiggy Family is setting the standard for family pool days in Dubai. It’s the perfect balance between finger food and sandy toes, but also champagne and oysters.

Twiggy Family, Park Hyatt Dubai, Dubai Creek Resort, daily, 9am to sunset, Dhs200 per person (weekdays), Dhs250 per person (weekends), children Dhs100 (weekdays), Dhs125 (weekends), children five years and below go free. Tel: (0)4 602 1105. twiggy.ae

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

The ideal new spot for a relaxing yet fun-filled family day, and yes, a strong contender for Dubai’s chicest family beach club.

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2023 51

FILM FOCUS:

THE THREEQUALIZER

What is currently intended to be the concluding chapter of The Equalizer saga, The Equalizer 3 exploded into UAE cinemas at the end of August with a flurry of fracas and improvised weaponry. It wraps up the story of retired US Marine, ex-DIA officer, and missionary of bloody justice Robert McCall (Denzel Washington), a one-man special ops unit committed to defending the downtrodden and victims of organised crime. This third entry is primarily staged in a remote Italian town, where McCall finds himself staring down the berretta of a local Mafia family. The price for

peace, the cost of sanctuary is of course, a pile of dead bodies, intense hand gestures and all-out war.

The cast includes Dakota Fanning, creating an emotional Man on Fire, Creasy-Lupita reunion; David ‘Roy from The Office’ Denman; and Gaia Scodellaro. It’s directed by master craftsman Antoine Fuqua (Training Day, Southpaw and The Magnificent 7) who has been at the helm for each of the three Equalizer films (itself a reboot of a TV show), with this film marking his fifth collaboration with onscreen muse Denzel. We had the honour of catching up with him ahead of the film’s release to discuss possible spin-offs, samurais and the validity of violence.

52 SEPTEMBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // FILM INTERVIEW
Words: Miles Buckeridge In conversation with The Equalizer trilogy director, Antoine Fuqua

You’ve said before that this film concludes a trilogy, but what are the chances we’ll get to see a prequel or a spinoff or some other form of film in the Equalizer universe?

Yeah. I don’t know. The audience will decide really. Once it gets out into the world, and if it’s received the way we all hope and intend for it to be received. Those conversations, I’m sure, will happen. But it will be up to Sony.

Denzel’s character starts the movie as an outsider in the community that he finds himself in. What aspects of the character did you want people to see from this setup?

He didn’t really want to engage with the people, but because the people are warm... It’s a small town, and they’re very inviting. I wanted the audience to see how you

can fall in love with another culture. A man from America, a black man, could go to Italy and fall in love with the culture, with the people. So it doesn’t really matter where you are. That was the most important thing.

It feels like Robert McCall is on a bit of a lone samurai adventure. Upholding honour and fighting off morally bankrupt warlords. And obviously, your Magnificent Seven movie is a reimagining of Seven Samurai. Is that a genre you feel affinity towards?

I do. I think it all started when I saw Seven Samurai Corsaro’s film when I was a kid. The idea of helping people who can’t help themselves is very appealing to me. I think it’s important to put that into the world.

People love seeing bullies and abusers getting their comeuppance. And it seems to be a big part of the joy in watching the Equalizer movies. Do you feel like this makes the audience more accepting of the violence? That it’s a necessary part of the tale?

It is a necessary part of the tale in a movie. Right. In the entertainment world. I hope in a real world there’s other ways to deal with people. But in a movie, absolutely. It’s acceptable in an entertainment format. But the bad guys have to be worthy of that punishment as well. So they have to be really, really bad.

Were there any sort of executions or any scenes of extreme violence that you had to dial back a little bit where you felt like it went a bit too far?

There’s definitely stuff on the cutting room floor. A few things that I’ve said, “we’re OK, I don’t need that in every scene.” I always push it a little further and then I’ll dial it back a little bit, according to the audience, the studio and all the smart people around me. You have to find balance.

WHATSON.AE | SEPTEMBER 2023 53

PICK: Endings you didn’t see coming. Goodbye happily ever after, hello what in the world just happened?! Cringey cliches and predictable conclusions are not my cup of tea, movies where things fall into place in the final few moments are where it’s at. Three to watch right now: Cinema Paradiso, No Time To Die, and The Menu.

ICK: Fight scenes that overstay their welcome. We get it: you can disarm the bad guy with a single punch while driving a supercar one-handed that just so happens to be flying through the air. There’s no need to drag it out for eight minutes.

Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor

PICK: The Open Ending.

For some, leaving it up to the audience comes across as a creative cop-out, but I’ve always enjoyed a good shaggy dog story. And even if the director hasn’t been dropping big hints, being left wondering can be the greatest sort of gift.

ICK: A reboot noone asked for. Cash grab reboots can get in the cinematic sea. Taking cherished memories, adding ‘2023’ to the title and wheeling out beloved characters, for the sole purpose of a lazy pay day, is not fan service, it’s a steel boot in the kidneys of art. 2.0, the new class.

PICK: People walking away from an explosion in slow motion. No, you run from an explosion. You run like the wind. But it’d be cool to march in slow-mo for sure, because who cares about a little shrapnel.

ICK: Hanging up the phone at the end of a sentence. You never hear anyone say “okay”, “bye now” ,”talk soon”, “sounds good” or anything of the sort. Someone will just say,“You like the idea? Great!” and then hang up. Doubt that’d fly in real life, and in 2023, it’s also likely to be a trigger.

Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter

PICK: Heist movies. I love a good heist movie, and it’s a bonus if the leading stars are female. They often feature great plots, hilarity, and twists. What’s key for me, is we’re urged to side with the ‘criminals’, cheering as they wantonly commit felonies (even if they’re usually against despicable people).

ICK: Horror movies where the characters don’t run away. Picture the scene: a character, who has just found a dead body, hears a curious noise upstairs. Do they run? Nooo… They head straight for Mr Axe Murderer. Sorry but you deserve whatever is about to happen to you mate.

Pick n Icks

Tamara Wright, Online Reporter

PICK: Films that mess with the timeline. I love a challenge and drawing my own conclusions rather than a predictable, straightforward story. When a film switches between past and present, it gives the storyline depth, and deepens character connections making it a lot more interesting.

ICK: Bad fantasy. Unrealistic, badly written fantasy movies give me zero enjoyment. Perhaps I’m too much of a realist to appreciate them. Perhaps I haven’t watched enough to generalise. But give me a rom com over the likes of Star Wars any day.

Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter

PICK: Cheesy action movies.

I’m talking voice activated cars, exploding pens, one liners and braindead ununionised henchmen. Give me all of that wrapped up with an absolute weapon of a female protagonist, and I’m sold.

ICK: Guns never running out of bullets.

I grew up playing Call of Duty and I know all too well (thanks to zombie bites) that magazines run out of bullets. This isn’t a Mary Poppins bottomless bag. You can’t shoot a pistol more than 10 times – extended mags – before yelling “I’m out.”

Manaal Fatimah, Editorial Intern

PICK: Wholesome brother-sister bonds. Perhaps because I’ve got two of those in my own household but that one late night heartto-heart where secrets are exchanged and life trajectories are charted; I might have shed a tear. Or many.

ICK: Wattpad fanfiction made into movies. PSA for Millennials, Wattpad is an online fanfiction writing forum. Toxic relationships, Y/N POVs and pick-me’s to end all pick-me’s: these really go straight to delusion-town. No further explanation needed.

Mabel Elizabeth, Editorial Intern

PICK: Heart warming friendships. Nothing tugs at my heartstrings more than wholesome on-screen friendships. I always relate them to the friends in my own life, giving me renewed appreciation for them.

ICK: The token ethnic character.

It saddens me that many movies still feature tired POC stereotypes and resign their roles to side quest-servingNPCs. Give them their own arc, decent dialogue and make them interesting. That’s the only way to true diversity.

Taking the plunge on learning how to scuba dive in Dubai

Thanks to the year-round sunshine, blue-flag beaches, array of marine life, and incredible nearby dive sites, living in the UAE is the perfect excuse to take up diving as a hobby (and a great way to beat the summer heat).

Dive Campus, located in Al Quoz, is home to the region’s largest indoor ‘Dive Tank’, made with upcycled shipping containers. With 220,000 litres of fresh water, the tank measures four-metres-deep, 12-metres-long, and five-metres-wide.

Ideal for scuba and free diving training, anyone from beginners to seasoned divers can experience the Discover Scuba Diving sessions in the tank, starting from Dhs200 per class.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The homegrown concept started back in 2021 as an online shop and has since become a certified PADI training academy and a home for Dubai’s burgeoning community of diving enthusiasts, adventure seekers, and ocean lovers.

Across two floors, Dive Campus features a café and chill-out zone, a multi-brand equipment store with a pre-loved section, training rooms for instructors, and a freshwater tank.

There’s also a fully equipped scuba van offering frequent day trips to the best diving spots in the UAE, from Fujairah to Ras al Khaimah, to put the theories into practice.

TESTING THE WATERS

We visited Dive Campus for the noexperience-necessary Discover Scuba Diving session. As complete first-timers, we were put instantly at ease with the owners, who are also avid divers, and the experienced instructor.

Wet suits on, our trainer, Ahmed, gave us a briefing about the equipment, hand signals, how water pressure affects us, and how to equalise ear pressure.

You’ll learn to master underwater skills with confidence in the shallow, such as breathing underwater, what to do if your mouthpiece falls out, how to remove water from your masks, and how to clear your regulator underwater. Ahmed demonstrated all the techniques and we practiced them at our own pace until we were confident enough to go into the depths.

Our instructor then led the way down into the tank, constantly ensuring we were comfortable through gestures, and regularly checked we were breathing slowly and equalising our ears. There really is no feeling like breathing underwater for the first time. In fact, we were pleasantly surprised by the lack of underwater anxiety we faced, breathing

with control and independently equalising our ear pressure almost immediately.

We were underwater for around 30 to 40 minutes in total and, in no time, four metres deep, weightless, playing catch, and swimming and dancing around – even as beginners. The tank also has plexiglass windows, so that friends and family can watch and snap you during training.

Verdict: Our first-ever dive was a surprisingly chill yet adrenaline-pumping activity. We felt safe and comfortable in a supportive environment, and under the guidance of our instructor. The introduction session at Dive Campus has only made us want to pursue our PADI license even more and become more selfsufficient in diving to be able to explore the beautiful underwater world.

Ready to dive in? All you need to bring is swimwear. The cost includes all the equipment required for your first dive including a wetsuit and flippers, as well as dressing room access with towels and toiletries. Plus, if you enjoyed the dive, you can then use the session towards completing your PADI course.

Dive Campus, Unit 3, 23 Street 14B, Al Quoz, Dubai, daily, 10am to 10pm. Try from Dhs200. Tel: (0)50 770 3484. divecampus.com

Destination detox at Talise Spa

Wellness starts from the inside with the new Wellness Programmes at Talise Spa…

Rewind five years, and the role of the hotel spa was simply to offer pampering massages that knead out the knots and kinks, and a menu of glowinducing facials that enhanced holiday skin. But now, hotel spas are so much more than that.

Pioneering the way is Talise Spa at Jumeirah Al Qasr, a premier wellness destination that has added a collection of eight comprehensive wellness programmes to its extensive offering. Each plan is governed by four key pillars: mental wellness, mindful movement, internal wellbeing, and restoration. Aiming to go deeper than the traditional spa setup,

Talise Spa’s bespoke programme’s can be curated over three, six, or seven-days, fusing spa treatments with wellbeingdriven activities and healthy menus that, when combined, promise to be transformative and enriching experiences for physical and emotional wellbeing.

The setting couldn’t be more relaxing. Against the backdrop of Madinat Jumeirah’s winding waterways, Talise Spa is a collection of treatment rooms, relaxation areas, luxe spa facilities and zen-inducing shalas nestled within tropical gardens. When we visit to experience a taste of the Detox Programme, a refreshing ginger tea is served in the instantly calming reception area. A floral fragrance wafting through the air adds to the aura of calm.

Our own session, designed to offer a day of mental and emotional clarity, begins with an hour of energy healing. Using a pendant to channel into our subconscious, our therapist unpacks and releases trapped negative emotions both past and present to help restore internal balance. The session

comes with feelings of tiredness, heaviness and some hesitation, all of which we’re told are natural reactions. Do we leave feeling lighter? Not immediately, but there is a sense of relief that follows in the next day or two.

The next session is art therapy, a mental wellbeing technique that allows us to tap into our inner child. In a dimly lit treatment room we position a cushion on the floor and take our fingers to the paper, using a rainbow collection of colours to express our current feelings through paint. It feels therapeutic to simply be getting creative for no other reason than to relax, and when we talk through the rhyme and reason behind some of the colour and print selections with the art therapist, it’s both thought-provoking and offers a surprising emotional release.

To conclude our trio of sessions (guests embarking on the three-day wellness programme typically complete six sessions over three days), we return to a more traditional spa therapy, Chi Nei Tsang. An abdominal massage that’s designed to help release emotional tension through recycling negative energies that constrict the natural flow of Chi, or energy, through the body, at Talise Spa it’s combined with stretching techniques all aimed at releasing toxins from the body and ensuring total relaxation. And that’s exactly how we feel when we leave after our Detox session.

Talise Spa, Jumeirah Al Qasr, Jumeirah, 10am to 9pm daily, Detox Programme from Dhs9,800. Tel: (0)4 366 6818. jumeirah.com

Uncovering Jordan’s treasure trove of short haul travel adventures

This month, we’re handing the lens of our regional travel focus over to an industry expert: Matt Vlemmiks, Leisure Manager at dnata Travel, who’s taking us on a ‘Journey across the unforgettable wonders of Jordan,’ only a three-hour flight time from the UAE. Our suggested week-long itinerary starts in the capital city, where modern luxuries sit alongside fascinating historic sites. Travel on to time-defying Petra, one of the ‘New Seven Wonders of the World’, before staying amidst two of the Middle East’s most incredible natural landscapes – the Wadi Rum desert, and Dead Sea coast.

Day 1-2: Amman

Visits to Jordan typically start in Amman, for a glimpse into local life and culture amidst its central hub. On a walking tour with a local guide, take in the best of the city from the streets of old downtown to marketplaces full of treasures, top historic landmarks, and its most famous restaurants. Take a day trip to the ancient city of Jerash, one of the best-preserved Roman cities in the world. Recommend hotels include the 5-star Landmark Amman, where rooms and suites are amongst the largest in Jordan, with panoramic city views. Its multiple restaurants and lounges also include the city’s longest outdoor bar.

Day 2-4: Petra

No trip to Jordan would be complete without taking in the spectacular ‘lost city’ of Petra. Built in the third century BC by the Nabataeans, the intricate hand-carved temples, palaces and other important structures are hewn straight out of the red desert sandstone. We recommend taking at least two days to experience its natural beauty and architectural achievements. For a unique experience, every Monday, Wednesday, and Thursday ‘Petra by Night’ sees thousands of candles light up the city, whilst ‘Petra Kitchen’ cooking classes offer an authentic, social affair. Stay at Hayat Zaman Hotel, close to the site. Here, modern facilities are styled within an authentic late 19th-century Jordanian village.

Day 4-5: Wadi Rum

Undoubtedly one of the most incredible natural wonders of the Middle East, experience ‘Mars on Earth’ amidst the red sands of the Wadi Rum desert. Located in the south on the eastern fringes of Aqaba, explore its famous valley lined by epic limestone formations, on to boundless empty spaces, canyons, water holes, and other natural treasures, with the chance to spot millennia-old rock drawings. A two-hour Jeep tour allows a trip to the most iconic spots in a day. For clear, uninterrupted views of the night sky, stay in a ‘bubble tent’ at Jabal Rum Camp with endless opportunities for stargazing.

Day 5-7: Dead Sea

Also known as the world’s largest natural spa and the lowest body of water on Earth, Jordan’s Dead Sea coast is another of the country’s most spectacular natural landscapes. Its main attraction is the water itself, uniquely mineral-rich and high in salt content, allowing visitors to float peacefully as they soak up its regenerative qualities. At the Hilton Dead Sea Resort & Spa, enjoy direct access to its stretch of private Dead Sea beachfront, whilst taking advantage a range of amenities from spa treatments to a rooftop bar overlooking the shore.

LOOKING TO TRAVEL FOR LONGER?

One of the benefits of booking through an agent, is that itineraries can be tailor-made to meet the individual needs of travellers. For those looking to explore more of Jordan, other places of interest include Aqaba on its glorious Red Sea coast – a divers’ paradise, and for keen hikers, see the beautiful Dana Biosphere Reserve. Another option is to combine a trip with more of the Middle East.

dnata Travel’s ‘Discover Jordan’ holiday package takes in highlight stops and accommodation featured in this article, private transfers, a local guide, and more. For further advice and inspiration, or to create your ideal itinerary, contact the dnata Travel experts via call or WhatsApp on 800 DNATA (36282), on social media @dnatatravel, or visit a dnata Travel retail outlet, with stores located across the UAE. dnatatravel.com.

Sardinia SUBLIME

Sardinia’s ritzy resort towns are sought-after spots for a slice of La Dolce Vita. But that’s just the tip of the iceberg on this sun-drenched Mediterranean masterpiece…

What image does your mind conjure when you think of Sardinia? Sweeping golden beaches lapped by inviting turquoise waters? Plucked-from-apostcard Porto Cervo, with its designed boutiques and upscale restaurants? Once sleepy marinas now dotted with mega yachts, each the floating playground of someone rich and famous? While all of these enhance Sardinia’s allure, it’s not all glitz and glam. There’s so much more soul to this central Mediterranean jewel.

Thanks to a new seasonal direct flight route with flydubai, accessing this breathtaking islet has never been easier from the UAE. The seasonal route, which operates three times per week until September 30, lands you at Olbia Costa Smeralda Airport. This serves as a gateway to northeastern Sardinia, where endless glamour and rugged natural beauty are the surprise siblings that give this island its unique magic.

Hotel Capo d’Orso

It’s easy to see why the secluded luxuries of this five-star resort have the rich and famous flocking to its shores. Nestled within the picturesque Cala Capra National Park, its appeal extends from the verdant, landscaped grounds, to the rustic luxe aesthetic and the charming staff. Honeymooners dine on a romantic floating deck, couples relax lazily in hammocks that billow gently under the dappled shade of the trees, while the Thalasso and spa is a pampering oasis where guests can truly switch-off. For something with a little injection of Porto Cervo glamour (the glitzy town is a mere 20 minutes drive away), dining on the terrace of Il Paguro is a sensory voyage that encapsulates the sights, sounds, aromas and flavours of the ocean it overlooks. Its fresh oysters spritzed with lemon and giant bowls of lobster pasta are each excuses to cancel any further plans for a long, leisurely lunch. Rates from Dhs1,935 per night. hotelcapodorso.com

STAY

Hotel Airone

Designed to feel like a quaint Italian village wrapped around a central swimming pool, this family-friendly stay from Felix Hotels is a handily located spot whatever your vacation style. Both the high fashion boutiques and swanky bars of Porto Cervo, located 20 minutes away, and the array of natural trails and golden beaches that dot the coast, are within easy reach. Guest rooms are simply styled and sit in neat rows around the swimming pool, and the grounds are also home to tennis courts and a play area for little ones. A continental breakfast of fresh pastries and local fruits is a great way to fuel up for a day of exploring. Rates from Dhs625. felixhotels.it

Resort Valle dell’Erica

With its impressive array of restaurants, collection of swimming pools and best-inclass wellness facilities, you’d be forgiven for never leaving the resort when checkingin to Valle dell’Erica. Its sprawling 70 acres of private grounds and almost mile-long coastline are aching to be explored. Essentially two resorts in one – the newer La Licciola leads into the historic Erica – around each corner you’ll find saltwater infinity pools that appear to drift into the sea, sandy beaches dotted with parasols, and some half dozen restaurants. The best way to soak it all in is by getting lost among it all, although electric buggies are on-hand to help you to your final destination should you wish. The resort’s aesthetic appeal comes from its ability to blend seamlessly into its surroundings, and local wood, cork and stone are large parts of keeping the traditional charms of this former tourist village alive. From the impressive culinary array, don’t miss an aperitivo in the picturesque square at Nemo, served up to soulful live music. Rates from Dhs1,935 per night. hotelvalledellerica.com

DINE DO

A global haute-spot… Zuma

Known and loved for its delectable Japanese fare, Zuma is a staple fine-dining destination in the UAE. At its counterpart in Porto Cervo, it lands as a seasonal pop-up that pairs a cool and contemporary ambience with sweeping vistas of the Tyrrhenian Sea. Expect energetic DJ sets, a selection of aperitifs designed for the jet-set locale, and an exceptional array of sushi.

@zumaportocervo

A taste of the local flavour… Frades

A Michelin-pedigree celebration of Italian ingredients, Frades hails from Milan but packs its bags for a lofty terrace in Porto Cervo during the balmy Italian summer. The resulting restaurant is a near-faultless amalgam of stunning views, thoughtful Italian hospitality, and local flavours taking centre stage in dishes like culurgiones ravioli with black truffle and Milanese-style turbot.

@fradesportocervo

A stunning place to party… Phi Beach

Part-restaurant, part-beach club, part-bar –whether you go to Phi Beach to drink, dine or party, just make sure you go. The best way to experience this breathtaking see-and-beseen spot, arranged around the craggy rocks of the Baja Sardinia coastline, is with drinks at sunset to watch the golden orb meld into the ocean, its sorbet hues illuminating the sky. But you’ll want to stay until late into the night, with a regular rotation of international DJs headlining some of the island’s biggest parties against the backdrop of the ocean.

@phibeachofficial

Soak up the sun at Nikki Beach

A slightly more rustic iteration of the hedonistic beach club brand where every day is a celebration of life, Nikki Beach Costa Smeralda is set within the rugged Cala Petra Ruja bay. The adventure begins before you’ve event reached this stunning spot, which is accessible via Nikki Beach’s swish boat shuttle – or your own private yacht. Signature white day beds line the gently lapping shore, where guests happily while away afternoons soaking up the ambience and sipping on fresh Spritz. Beyond the beach there’s the restaurant, where energetic DJ sets provide the high-octane soundtrack to a menu of indulgent Mediterranean flavours.

@nikkibeachcostasmeralda

Go island hopping to La Maddalena

The impossibly aquamarine waters that flank the northeast coast of Sardinia are well documented on Sardinian travel itineraries. But it’s not enough to simply see the endless shades of azure. Hop aboard one of Poseidon Charter’s expertly-crewed boats and set sail on a tour of the unspoiled landscape of La Maddalena National Park. Make pit stops at breathtaking hidden bays like Cala d’Alga and Spiaggia Rosa (pink beach), where impressive rock formations keep Centuries-old secrets, before docking in the archipelago of marvels for an inviting dip in the cool waters.

Shop for local crafts at Cannigione Street Market

A sleepy Costa Smeralda town fronted by one of the best beaches on the island, visitors may be drawn to Cannigione’s coastal charms and crystalline waters, but don’t leave without stopping by one of the markets. From June, a night market takes place infront of the marina, a perfect spot for picking up artful trinkets from local ceramics to jewellery.

Armani Hotel

Giorgio Armani’s namesake destination offers a highflying night in the sky

LOCATION

The Armani Hotel takes up all levels from the ground to the eighth floor, along with levels 38 and 39 of the crown jewel in Dubai’s glittering skyline - the Burj Khalifa. With its own opulent, dedicated entrance, and a prime postcode in Downtown Dubai, this hotel really does feel as vital, voguish and effortlessly chic as the brand name it wears.

LOOK AND FEEL

Much like the label they take inspiration from, the interiors are a slick vision of understated luxury. Dark tones and minimalism are the stars of the design and add a layer of classic glamour that weaves from the lobbies to the walkways to the rooms and beyond. It’s in the little details, from the all-black stools for your belongings in all the restaurants, to the

soft yellow lighting and the clean lines of the hallways, which, like the rest of the hotel, have been designed by Giorgio Armani himself to resemble a catwalk. Your invite, if one was needed, to strut.

ROOMS

Checking into a pleasantly compact Fountain Suite, we were greeted with a stunning, all-encompassing view of the district beyond. It, as the name suggests, supplies a privileged vantage point of The Dubai Fountain. Completely unexpected however, and an incredibly impressive flex, is the playback system that syncs the track being played in the show to the TV in your room. The curtains are heavy, and the furniture is an elegant chocolate wood. Inside, the bedroom boasts a king-sized bed and shiny black bathroom stocked with all the amenities you could think of, but elevated.

FACILITIES

The Armani Hotel comes loaded right up to the tailored collar with high-end amenities. Think pool, gym, spa, sauna, and steam

room – it’s all there. The gym is available for use 24/7 and the spa is a getaway within the getaway, the many rooms and hallways punctuated by serene silence. On the fun side of things, the premium Armani/ Prive night club offers free entry for the hotel guests; and luxe and lofty Atmosphere is nestled atop the 123rd floor, offering immaculate vibes and almost entirely unique views of the city.

FOOD AND DRINK

The Armani roster of restaurants features a collection of fine dining destinations that span some of the most well-loved cuisines in the world, including the Armani/ Hashi, serving up authentic Japanese fare among cherry blossoms and red lights. Dining delicacies include spicy chicken karaage (Dhs70), and several varieties of sushi, sashimi and maki made with fresh fish flown in daily. The highlights of our experience was the lobster teppanyaki (Dhs650) and the miso chocolate (75), both powerhouses of culinary delight. The breakfast buffet at Armani/Mediterraneo spoils you for choice and the afternoon tea at the Armani/Lounge takes that further, but in bite-size form.

RATES

A one-night stay for two in the Armani Fountain Suite with breakfast will cost you Dhs3,000.
