MAKING WAVES IN THE

Fresh and sunkissed from its August 1 opening, Amari Raaya Maldives is the latest leisure treasure to emerge from the Indian Ocean.

Amari Raaya Maldives is a luxury resort anchored to a lush private island in the fairytale Raa Atoll. It’s inspired by organic stories, the surrounding nature, open ocean, castaway romance and a prevailing sense of tropical adventure.

The island’s hand-curated charms include star-gazing watchtowers; eight dining options offering vibrant international flavours and unique culinary escapades; there’s the Maai Spa, in The Village Square – the island’s leisure hub and host of recreation, retail, and relaxation activities; elsewhere you’ll find pristine sands, mangrove walks and untouched reefs to explore;

The resort is located on Raa Atoll and is accessible from Velana International Airport directly by 45-minute seaplane to the resort or a fixed-wing domestic flight and speed boat via Ifuru Domestic Airport.

sporting pursuits include archery, zip lines, indoor and outdoor kids’ play areas, mini golf, padel tennis, watersports and of course scuba and snorkelling.

The island’s 187 dreamy villas offer direct access to either the beach or the ocean, with the option of private villas, pool villas or interconnected family villas surrounded by sand, sea or tropical palms, making every Maldives moment memorable.

Tying it altogether, your experience of the resort is framed around the enchanting story of Seb, a shipwrecked artist who found sanctuary on the island. Guests interact with the island’s attractions through the legacy of Seb and his craft – with highlights that include his Art and Crafts studio, ship and watch towers (with private dining activities).

Every visit is a chance to create your own story

WE TALK ABOUT FOOD A LOT AT WHAT’S ON HQ

One of the great joys of being on team What’s On is perpetually being surrounded by foodies. We agree on a lot of things, we disagree on plenty more. But one thing we are universally aligned on is our deep-rooted love for burgers. Whether it’s a group lunch order when only carbs will do, or we’re sharing weekend cheat meals, more times than not, our conversations revert to burgers. To chicken or beef? How much cheese is too much cheese? Which sauce really belongs on a burger? We’ve debated it all.

But we won’t be gatekeeping our findings from careers carved around rating and reviewing the city’s juiciest patties and fluffiest buns. Which is why this issue is dedicated to a food that deserves its place among the greats: the humble burger. But we’re not talking your run-ofthe-mill fast-food joints. Oh no. For this issue, we’re taking a deep dive into Dubai’s deserving gourmet burger scene, to discover which buns really deserve your dirhams.

We know what makes the perfect burger may be subjective, which is why we’ve carefully considered several factors, from juiciness of meat and tastiness of the flavours to the customisability. We take our burgers seriously, after all. Come hungry to p17 and cast your own vote.

This month we’re also making a case for our city’s beloved shopping malls, because the key to surviving hot summer days is spending as much time as possible where’s it’s always a cool 23 Degrees. But there’s more to these malls than just shopping, with rollercoasters, escape rooms and even indoor skydiving to check out from p22. We won’t let the summer heat stop us getting our thrills.

Enjoy the issue,

Returning to a favourite spot for a new summer brunch… Cè La Vi

Cè La Vi is the kind of spot I return to time and again. And new for the summer – book the indoor brunch ASAP. The menu is another great array of cocktails and chef Howard Ko’s pan-Asian mastery. The vibes are kept on point all afternoon with dance-inducing tunes, magic tricks and a live sax.

Heading all the way to the capital for a meal at… Somewhere

I took a friend along with me to dine at Instagrammable Somewhere

Cafe in Abu Dhabi Marina Mall and we still can’t stop talking about the shrimp kunafa, the shawarma bao and ceralac umm ali. If you’re ever in the capital or if you’re in Dubai and have about six hours to kill, consider Somewhere in Abu Dhabi. This specific Somewhere.

Delighting in a slice of France at the stunning… Odeon

Located on Jumeirah Beach Road, Odeon is a legit hidden gem. On the ground floor there’s a market selling fresh French produce. Wander up the stairs and there’s a fine dining restaurant and I cannot recommend the comte ravioli strongly enough. All I can say is j’taime trop Odeon.

Fuelling my growing K-pop obsession through… bingeing Going Seventeen

Most days after work, I’m way too tired to be scrolling through Netflix for a television series to watch. I recently started watching Korean variety show Going Seventeen, featuring one of my favourite bands (Seventeen) doing the most random things for pure entertainment. Who knew watching grown men chase each other in go-karts could bring so much joy? youtube.com

Keeping the kids active over the summer holidays with… Maison Tini

Taking place at Goshi Warehouse 34, in Al Quoz – Maison Tini is hosting a summer camp for kids. It’s affordable (Dhs75 per day), offers a range of fun activities, and expends some of that **screams in snot and sugar** energy. It’s open Mon to Fri, for ages two to six. maisontini.com

Revisiting a Scorsese classic... Taxi Driver (1976)

I’ve watched this Scorsese classic several times over the years, and De Niro’s timeless performance as a depressed 26-year-old cabbie in New York City, trying to find meaning in life, is one to savour. Watch out for Wizard’s words of advice and a memorable performance by Jodie Foster. Watch it on Netflix

Beating the holiday blues with the summery menu at… Flamingo Room

My top pick for a girlie lunch with a slice of holiday vibes is Jumeirah Al Naseem’s Flamingo Room. Light, flavour-packed summery dishes are complemented by a pretty blush pink colour palette combined with pops of punchy zebra print. One for your Dubai summer to-dine lists.

Feeding myself and my English language complex with... Wordle

Every single lunch break I have to play Wordle. I say ‘have to’ and not ‘want to’ because it’s become validation at this point. Fork in hand, I stare at the white grid of little boxes wondering how I’ve seemingly forgotten all five-letter words in the English language, mentally asking it to ‘cash me outside’. All worth it for those golden Eureka moments though. wordlegame.org

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Helen Farmer

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Helen Farmer (@_helenfarmer_), broadcast journalist on Dubai Eye 103.8FM and expert on family life in Dubai. Here she shares some of her favourite spots that you need on your radar.

I love visiting new openings and we live in an area with some great restaurants like 21grams, Lila Taqueria, Monno and Orfali Bros. For a celebration, it’s Josette or BB Social Dining and for pizza it has to be Blu by the water, or Pitfire.

@21grams.dubai, @lilataqueria, @monnodubai, @orfalibros_ bistro, @bbdifc, @josettedubai, @blupizzeria, @pitfirepizzadubai

There’s a stretch of sand called Sunrise Beach, close to the Four Seasons in Jumeira, that’s a real hidden gem. As the name suggests, it’s great in the morning: the water is calm and we’ve found hundreds of sand dollars. Take a breakfast picnic and make the most of the morning.

Most weekends you’ll find us sailing at Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, and the kids love rock climbing at Adventure Zone. When the weather is kind, you can’t beat the beach or a pool day at one of the Privilee pools. @doscuae

Pack up the car and take a road trip to Oman. We recently spent a few days at Jumeirah Muscat Bay, explored the souk, and snorkeled with turtles. In the cooler months you can swim with whale sharks, so we’ll be back for that.

@jumeirahmuscatbay

Frequent visitors to Hatta, we recently spent a weekend in the Damani Lodges, where you can barbecue, enjoy views, and have an action-packed day at Wadi Hub (axe throwing optional, water slides essential). It’s also great for hiking, and kayaking.

@visit.hatta

You can’t beat the massages in Sensasia Urban Spa, but for real relaxation, I love waking up above the clouds in Fujairah’s mountains. I’d share the exact location but my husband would never forgive me. @sensasia_spas

DUBAI’S BEST BURGERS

Dubai’s gourmet burger scene is amongst the best in the world right now. But how do we separate the natty patties, from the blando sandos? There’s only one way to find out… FIGHT

WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2023 17
WORDS: MILES BUCKERIDGE

What makes the perfect burger? Do you double up on the patties, add cheese inside, embrace chaotic toppings, go vegan, lean into the smash or dabble with a steakhouse staple? Are we doing potato buns, brioche, and should the meat be pink inside? The truth is, what makes the perfect burger is subjective, so our Top Trumps tournament will dissect the key qualities of each contender, allowing you to choose your own chomp-ion. Let the ‘Bun Fight’ commence.

WAGYU OVERLOAD

Rave reviews abound from this casual-to-fine waterfront enclave. But you can’t bring maki to a Bun Fight, so lets look at their singature burger’s fist-throwing form. The brioche bun hugs a wagyu patty, there’s lettuce, provolone cheese and a peppery chipotle sauce. Don’t let its elegant origin story fool you, the 3Fils burger is more than ready to get down and dirty.

WAGYU BURGER

11 Woodfire

BULL BURGER

Forged in the firmament of a Michelin Guide kitchen, chef Akmal’s burger was never going to fit the traditional street food mould. The wagyu patty is a thoroughbred threat, a pedigree beast with a ravenous snarl caged in a brioche bun. It’s bedded on mushroom duxelles, with uppercuts of shredded gouda and sriracha. Naughty, nice, airs and graces and primed to make a mess of diner’s faces.

This new burger bistro in Meyan Mall comes from locally-based culinary power tag-team Sultan and Kinda Chatila. And it bun-rushed onto Dubai’s burger scene with hype fire. Their signature Bull Burger (wagyu beef, cheddar, and beef bacon jam in a Hokkaido milk-bun) is fleet of foot, keen of price and true of aim. In just a few months, its already won an international belt, and justified local fandom.

Eleven Green @3.fils @11woodfire @elevengreen.uae

This homegrown burger chain emerged from humble hole-in-thewall Al Manara origins to become a superpower in Dubai’s casual dining sphere. The menu uses secret techniques and tweaks inspired by a global search for the perfect burger. Their staple smash – the High Burger – squares up with perfect balance, zero pretense, and a patty blend that’s a real rumble in the urban jungle.

THE GOOD CHEESEBURGER

We recognise that Neat Burger is not a home-grown burger joint – nor does it deal in what purists would call a burger. But for a fair Bun Fight, we need a meat-free contender to represent vegan interests. And this outfit, from F1 legend Lewis Hamilton, has a monster lurking under the hood. The original cheez is a riff on an American diner classic packed with sauce, pickles, onion and (vegan) cheese. Just zero cruelty.

Calling yourself ‘Good Burger’ is a brazen strut, especially if it’s not backed up by banging burgs. Fortunately for this brand, which began life as a pop-up at Maiz Tacos, their meat-wiches were strong. Too strong to remain amateur for long and having moved out, Good Burger is winning fame and acclaim from the city’s snack connoisseurs. Their classic cheese burger floats like a butterfly, and stings like a smashed patty.

THE OB CHEESEBURGER

Orfali Bros.

SAL’S BURGER

Sal’s Burger Kitchen

The super Orfali brothers are some of Dubai’s best respected homegrown food heroes. Why? Take a look at the award-winning menu of their Wasl 51 restaurant. It shows off creativity, craft and range applied to regional and international dishes. Lurking amongst the creations are a couple of wagyu burgers, and whilst they’re not the cheapest, pound-for-pound these elite units are in the running for Top Bun.

Something of a wild card in this Bun Fight, Sal’s makes the cut off-theback of its reputation in the Dubai burger fancier community. With outlets in Circle Mall and Nakheel Mall, its signature move is a polished version of the old jab, jab, hook. It steps into the ring with purpose and adorned with USDA beef, cheddar cheese, a secret sauce and tailored brioche bun. Sal’s is ready to go toe-to-toe with any of its all-star rivals.

CHEESE BURGER

This brand helped kicked off the current Dubai burger-naissance. Like Rocky Balboa, the training and dedication put into popping shots at sides of cattle has resulted in the homegrown brand going global. The secret beef blend in the smash is a knock out, add that to the heavyweight house sauce, titular pickles and potato bun, and it’s easy to see why Pickl will always be a pick for pundits. Still hungry? If it’s fries, it’s fries.

CLASSIC SLAWBURGER

Your vote for burger of the year in the What’s On Awards 2023, this smash and grab locale is probably best known for its non beef burger and the plump fried chicken wedges that fillet, but to overlook the classic Slaw hamburger is sweet folly. Flexing American-style muscle, slawed cucumbers and LaLa land sauce, this B-unit comes out swinging and rest assured it will not stop untill the job’s done.

LOADED FRIES

You have to be in the right mood for loaded fries. And not wearing cream trousers. But if you are a fan of the three-ton mess, we’re right behind Salt’s (@findsalt) salt and vinegar sprinkling with Parmesan cheese. They’re like sophisticated versions of our fave nostalgic crisp variety, Monster Munch. Pickl (@pickl.ae) have multiple options, but their Sando fries hit hard – although fair warning, you might not have any room for a burger afterwards.

FRIES

Fries are the most common burger bedfellows for good reason, and there are some premierchip examples in Dubai at the moment. Those at hipster chicken joint, Bonbird (@bonbird.uae) are incredible new additions to the scene, and we’ve always been passionate supporters of what Five Guys (@fiveguysuae) does with potato.

SIDE SHOW

Choosing the right side dish is important. Select sagely and it can enhance your whole dining experience. Order poorly and you’re left looking longingly at your burger buddy’s haul. These are some of the dishes that give us heart-shape side eyes in Dubai.

MILKSHAKES

Great shakes in Dubai run the gamut from Black Tap’s (@blacktapdubai) Burj-esque Crazyshakes, to classic Californian frozen custard at Shake Shack (@shakeshackme) Our hot picks are the classic-style shakes from Five Guys (@fiveguysuae), and creamy vintage cups from newcomer Eleven Green (@elevengreen.uae)

MAC AND CHEESE

Our single-issue manifesto for burger bars is to make Mac and Cheese a standard side. Dave’s Hot Chicken (@daveshotchickengcc) is on board, but Buffalo Wild Wings (@bwwingsuae) deserves the M&C crispy-on-top crown.

Dim sum, hot pot, hand-pulled noodles and more things to eat around Dubai Mall’s Chinatown

WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

26 AUGUST 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Chinatowns across the world – from New York to London – have served as hubs of community, love and culture. And when walking these streets, one thing is abundantly clear: the area’s restaurants are a key part of what keeps the heartbeat of Chinatown pulsing.

Keen to recreate that sense of community is Dubai Mall’s very own fully-indoor Chinatown, which opened quietly in March. While not all the kiosks and restaurants are trading just yet, there are more than enough open to make exploring it this summer worthwhile, with a range of restaurants serving Singaporean classics, Chinese specialities and dim sum favourites. But it can be hard to figure out the top from the slop, and that’s where we come in. Behold, your faithful guide to what’s hot and what’s not in Dubai Mall’s Chinatown…

LANZHOU BEEF NOODLES (Dhs28)

Food court kiosk: Impression of Xibei | Rating:

Where better to try proper hand-pulled noodles than a restaurant/kiosk that is the culinary epicentre of northwest China, and the birthplace of hand-pulled beef noodles – Lanzhou. Home to one of China’s significant populations of Hui Muslims, their most celebrated dish is beef ‘lamian’, or hand-pulled stewed beef noodles. Hand-pulled noodles (stretched to a customisable width) is added to halal beef stewed in a clear broth. Fresh coriander, scallions and chilli oil round out the party. The result? An aromatic, hearty bowl of springy, fresh noodles you’ll likely slurp down in record time. Need more noodles? Lanzhou will add extra for free.

WAGYU BEEF BUNS (Dhs42)

Restaurant: Ying Ji Restaurant | Rating:

An unusual dim sum option, but present on YingJi’s menu, are the delightful pan-fried M7-grade wagyu beef buns. These delicate buns (served as a trio) are first steamed, then fried to create the contrast between crisp and soft, with an aromatic and flavourful beef filling. We taste crispy onions, black pepper, soy and garlic interwoven within all that premium wagyu. The surprising hit of our food crawl.

SOYA SAUCE CHICKEN RICE (from Dhs19.50)

Food court kiosk: Hawker Chan | Rating:

News of the once ‘world’s most affordable Michelin meal’ opening in Dubai certainly set tongues wagging. In Singapore, Hawker Chan is something of a beloved institution and the kiosk inside Chinatown’s main food court is dishing out chef Chan Hong Meng’s signature cheap-as-chips dishes. The most famous is the soya sauce chicken rice. Based on a Hong Kong recipe, the chicken is marinated in soy for many hours, then braised by hand to –typically – create a flavourful and tender dish. Sadly, the Dubai version is anything but. A tough little drumstick – more bone than meat – with chewy skin is served with overcooked rice drenched in sauce, alongside a lackluster egg and broccoli. Skip.

CHINATOWN GUIDE 28 AUGUST 2023 | WHATSON.AE

HAR GAO (Dhs38) + SHUI MAI (Dhs35)

Restaurant: Ying Ji Restaurant

Rating:

Har gao (shrimp dumplings) and shui mai (open-faced chicken and scallop dumplings) are the king and queen of the dim sum table, and key dishes against which a dim sum restaurant’s worth is weighed. Too little shrimp and no chopped bamboo shoots in your har gao and it’s a flop. Stingy shui mai that’s too dry and it’s all over. Thankfully, the royal contents of these two steaming baskets hit the spot and are served piping hot from the kitchen as juicy, plump offerings.

HOT POT

Restaurant: Haidilao Hot Pot (various prices) | Rating:

Hot pot is less of a dish than it is an experience. You and your dining pals cook an array of ingredients – thinly sliced meats, mushrooms, shrimp paste, fish balls, Chinese lettuces, noodles, and more – in a pot of simmering, seasoned broth heated on an electric burner. Once cooked to your liking, you dip your ingredients in a fully-customisable sauce and dig in. Rinse and repeat until extremely full.

While hundreds of hot pot chains exist, the Haidilao brand is one of China’s most famous with over 500 outposts in 13 countries. Here you order off a tablet, scrolling through the menu and adding items to your cart. You can also divide your pot into four sections and have four different soup bases, including a tomato soup base suitable for vegetarians. Once your items arrive, start throwing it all in. Oh, and be sure to order the hand-pulled noodles – purely for entertainment’s sake – as it comes with its own dance show. Gourmet? No, not exactly. But a fun and ever-so-messy hot pot party? You bet.

FRIED BEEF STRIPS (Dhs38)

Food court kiosk: Nine Squares Restaurant | Rating:

The OG Nine Squares Restaurant in Jumeirah is actually one of the best spots in town for hot pot, however in Chinatown, their food court kiosk focuses on serving up a handful of pan-fried treats such as prawn and chicken dumplings, spring rolls, and beef buns, leaving the steaming bowls of broth to giants, Haidilao. We tucked into a mighty container of thick fried beef strips. Part chewy, crunchy and heavy on the pepper, we would have preferred it served as shredded crispy beef bites, but still perfectly snackable, especially when dipped into a pot of chilli powder.

REVIEW:

REIF JAPANESE KUSHIYAKI, DUBAI HILLS

Five years ago, Reif Othman was one of a handful of names in Dubai’s homegrown culinary talent pool. This small, but elite group of culinary masters stepped out of the shadows of the international kitchens they came through and began a movement that would see the homegrown food scene blossom into the world class display of gastronomy that it is today.

For Reif Othman, this meant opening Reif Japanese Kushiyaki in Dar Wasl in September 2019, initially a 29-seater unlicensed restaurant that promised affordable, Japanese street food. The second Reif Japanese Kushiyaki, located at Dubai Hills Business Park, is a grown up iteration of the first. It’s deceptively large,

with tables arranged down a long, narrow dining space. It’s also licensed, serving up an array of playfully named cocktails, alongside all the usual wines and beers.

It’s got the same look and feel as the izakaya-style original, with light woods and playful touches that are a nod to chef Othman’s fun personality. There are also huge vibrant artworks and colourful linen curtains that conceal private dining areas.

This menu includes all the best bits of the original (Reif’s wagyu katsu sando is still among Dubai’s best), plus some new, more upscale additions.

We opt for a mix, kicking off with the Japanese hamachi (Dhs78), soaking each sliver of fish in the flavourful sesame soy, with roasted almonds adding a welcome crunchy texture. From the kushiyaki, we pick the angus kushiyaki with truffle mayo and crispy shallot (Dhs79 for two), which are deliciously tender and slide right off the skewers.

The escargot takoyaki (Dhs78) is something we’ve not seen before on a Dubai menu, but the flavour and texture combination, from the meaty snail and sweet soy to the light takoyaki batter, impress.

From the star dishes, Reif’s Marble Bun (Dhs220) comes as layers of rich and buttery otoro, bacon jam and full-bodied Kagoshima wagyu.

Although we’re full, we try the matcha fondant (Dhs56), which oozes onto the spoon, balanced with lotus cream and vanilla ice cream, a symphonic mix of hot, cold, creamy and crunchy.

Dubai Hills Business Park, Building 3, 12pm to 3pm and 6pm to 12am daily. Tel: (0)4 255 5142. reifkushiyaki.com

REVIEW: ÉNAS

Greek food with no frills is this spot’s superpower

In Greek, the word énas means ‘one’. Simply put, it’s the numerical value for a singular thing. And that’s a fitting name for Énas on Palm Jumeirah, where a first glimpse into the quaint space evokes a feeling of harmony. Maybe it’s the earthy décor, washed in adjacent shades of white, beige and brown, from the walls to the oddly shaped vases nestled in mini arches and the sit-and-you-will-sink-in sofas. It’s all quite simple, really.

Located on the ground floor of Balqis Residence, Énas drips self-assured simplicity. It has a fluent feminine feel – uber chic, sleek and emanating yacht club all-whiteeverything class. The food, Greek-Mediterranean by heart, soul and everything in between, dances to the same beat.

Énas belongs to a new generation of restaurants, the babies of the local culinary scene that are taking early steps towards a, fingers crossed, fixed and successful status. It opened its doors in January of this year and has been serving up sharing-format Aegean flavours ever since.

There is a warmth in how easy the fare is – like Sunday mornings. The ‘choriatiki’ Greek salad (Dhs69) and the Énas maze platter (Dhs90) inaugurate our dinner, and we eagerly inhale bites of pita and koulouri bread slathered with delightfully sharp feta cheese and a selection of classic

dips. Amongst them are the evergreen tzatziki; a Barbie-pink taramasalata; and the melinzanosalata, a traditional aubergine dip. It’s the latter that puts what I usually see as my gastronomic nemesis in a far prettier dress. We were at last, able to make friends.

The moussaka arancini (Dhs69) is a success. It weaves a tight-knit curtain of flavour, the Greek interior and the Italian façade fused seamlessly. It stands marginally apart from the rest of the more traditional, homes-style plates, like the wild seabream (Dhs150) and the imam

bayildi (Dhs35).

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

The fish was an airy affair and paired with the yoghurt sauce (starring dill in the lead role) and samphire, it felt light on our tightening waistbands, but in no way lacking. The imam bayildi featured more eggplant – stuffed with a bright tomato sauce – which, as if to cement our earlier truce, we found very enjoyable.

Granted it keeps doing what it does, this location is sure to become a crowdpleaser.

The curtain-call on our meal was the bougatsa (Dhs50). It arrives as crispy filo pastry, golden brown and stuffed with a semolina custard, topped with almond cinnamon streusel, and paired with honey and Greek yoghurt ice cream. As we tucked into our undeniable favourite part of the meal, taking it in turns to share sweet spoonfuls with a loved one, we return to thinking of the meaning of Énas. A number of factors make this spot great, but the combination creates a one-of-akind dining experience.

Énas, Balqis Residence, The Palm Jumeirah, daily, 12pm to 4pm, 6pm to 10pm, Tel: (0)4 540 3600. @enasdxb

REVIEW: KAI ENZO

Chef Izu’s latest concept is a marriage of East and West, but is it a happy one?

If you’re old enough, nerdy enough, or foster sufficiently megalomaniacal tendencies to have played the strategy board game Risk, you’ll know how difficult it is to win a battle on two fronts.

The aim of the game is to invade and hold provinces across the world. It’s a game homegrown restaurant hero chef Izu Ani’s culinary empire plays well, currently covering a decent chunk of that global cuisine atlas.

Within his ranks, he can count resounding gastronomic victories in Dubai-based European restaurants (Carine, La Maison Ani and Gaia to name a few).

His latest expedition, Kai Enzo, opened in June of this year, and attempts to straddle eastern and western gastro-nom-

ispheres, offering a chimeric blend of Japanese and Meditteranean cuisines. But as we observed above, covering two distinct fronts simultaneously will always be a potential ‘Risk’.

So, we’re here to roll the dice on this new outpost of the Izu empire, on the roof of Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai, just a sandy skip from the transitioning La Mer North leisure project.

The restaurant space lacks some of the aesthetic audacity of its brothers-in-arms, but it’s neat and preppy chic.

We start with a creamy bowl of tuna and olive oil mousse

“it’s basically old-money tuna mayo,” we think “for the type of people with yacht catalogues on their coffee table.” It’s rewarding though and served with earnestly crisp potato chips (Dhs42). We’ve also called in the support of delicious mixed pickles (Dhs35); and cocktail aperitifs, Ikigai (Dhs60) and Island Spritz (Dhs75). The Japan-inspired sip piles eastern favour on a tequila base with shades of matcha, rice milk and tea bubbles. It’s moonlight, VIP cigar lounge and Narita jet lag in cut glass.

The spritz speaks in Esperanto and seaside glamour – breezy, brisk, with jabbed keys of herb and citrus.

A plate of wagyu gyoza (Dhs72) makes its way to the table. They’re stocky and juicy, a stewed fusion that results in one of the finest beef dumplings you’re likely to find within a healthy city spread. The market fish karaage (Dhs155) with tamari vinegar and wasabi mayo, provides another reason to look up and smile.

Cumulus wisps of Japanese batter coat the tender, chopstick-friendly chunks of fleshy fish, ready for robing in nose-tingling wasabi garb.

We skip the sushi course and march into Chilean sea bass (Dhs175) and wagyu beef ribeye (Dhs395) territory.

The flaky fillet of sea bass is a drum rattle of blended texture and refined culinary craft. The steak is served with flared fungi, it’s that almost paté-smooth grade of wagyu that makes it borderline impossible to avert a Nirvanic eye-roll and repeating a mantra of “it’s just so tender”.

Hyatt Centric Jumeirah Dubai, La Mer, Mon to Thu 5pm to 1am, Fri to Sun 5pm-2am.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

MAISON MATHIS, VOCO DUBAI THE PALM

Does the Maison always win?

Tin Tin, mussels, Hercule Poirot, Kevin De Bruyne, and chocolate. What do these things have in common? If you answered ‘much loved Belgian imports’, you have our permission to celebrate with fries and mayonnaise. But we’re here to discuss another, less talked about yet still equally adored gift from Belgium.

Yes, Maison Mathis, restaurant and bakery now a decade deep into delighting residents of Arabian Ranches, has its roots in the lands of the Benelux. In January of this year, phase two of its Dubai mission rolled into town with a permanent address at Voco Dubai The Palm, placing the chic

eatery in convenient rambling distance of current Dubai entertainment epicentre, Palm West Beach.

They’ve just launched a new four-hour Saturday brunch, which trades in sharing plates of modern European cuisine – and just like the restaurant’s fictional compatriot, Mr Poirot – we must investigate. We’ve plonked ourselves down at a sunlit (covered) terrace table, just as the live duo launch into a rendition of Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black. Food service begins with freshly baked bread, the house identifies as part bakery after all, and oysters served with shallot vinegar. Plates change and we’re confronted with another classic Dubai dish, wagyu tartar.

Maison Mathis is primarily concerned

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Strong, impressively long and going for a song. This new brunch on Palm West Beach is a welcome Dubai debut.

with plating up attractive dishes, whose components are allowed to give a clean account of their own quality. The wagyu tartar is a great case study of this ethos. We add a little cracked pepper and salt, to suit our own bias, but it’s already demonstrative of killer kitchen instincts. Sheets of rare velvet flesh, pickle and crunch for garnish, and an arty arch of tarty sauce.

It’s octopus next, with a creole-esque tomato-based salsa, and mussels two ways. Seafood with marinal marinades, and a sharp foucs on cooking time.

The main platter is a mixed gill – lamb chops, beef and chicken brochette served alongside thick-cut steakhouse chips. No pageantry, no misdirection. It’s a transparent mini meat feast that proves the Maison has a great relationship with the local butcher.

The final act plays out on a stage of crispy, fluffy-cored churros and messy dips. Voco Dubai The Palm, Palm West Beach, Sat 1pm to 5pm, Dhs229 soft. Tel: (0)4 249 5502. @maisonmathisvocopalm

BAR OF THE MONTH:

ALMA BAR

Is this DIFC’s next must-visit hotspot?

From London’s Soho all the way to Dubai, Alma Bar is an enchanting cocktail bar located within the grounds of Sucre bringing together art, culture, creativity, and a unique menu of bites and drinks.

Spotting what we hope is the entrance, we part the chain link curtains and enter the moody bar and are immediately drawn to the three digital art pieces set behind the stage and the lavish bar. It’s still fairly bright outside when we arrive, a stark difference from the mood inside, which embraces shadows, plush red hues, grand green and gold detailing and assorted Arabian trinkets.

We take a seat and dive straight into the cocktail menu with an Almarita (Dhs80), a strong and fiery drink with togarashi Timur salt dust on the glass, giving a sweet and spicy note to each sip. We also enjoy the New Fashioned (Dhs85), a twist on the classic that replaces orange with a mild banana flavouring. For a lighter sip, the Mama Quilla (Dhs80) has fruit

profiles with a mild sour and salty aftertaste. For bar snacks, we start with the classics. The crispy squid (Dhs75) with black garlic aioli was crunchy and the jalapeños added a satisfying heat on our palate. Next, we try the padron peppers (Dhs70), which come topped with salt flecks and are served with a tomato-based red pepper sauce. We were looking for the heat but it never arrived, so this is a good option for those who prefer their bites mild.

Waiting for our next dish, the vibe and volume begins to pick up, though we’re

never forced to resort to frantic shouting across the small marble table. Clearly a popular new haunt, we notice a huddle of guests at the bar sipping drinks as they wait for tables to be vacated.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

A suave spot that might just be the perfect new postwork drinks destination

At 9pm, a live band kicks off and the ambiance slips into something more comfortable and jazzy. As it does, our next dish, sea bass crudo (Dhs85), arrives. The bite comes together well when all the elements are assembled on the spoon.

Our final dish for the evening is the steak melt tacos (Dhs90) served with a chipotle sauce. Each bite is a full and meaty mouthful, though the beef could have perhaps been a little more tender.

We leave with the fiesta still in fevered swing, live music dictating the tempo with gusto. It’s a school night and as conscientious objectors to using Chat GPT in the office these reviews won’t write themselves.

Alice Holtham, Group Editor

PICK: Timing. Controversial as it may be, I rather enjoy it when a restaurant serves food when it’s ready, rather than in set courses. I’m a firm believer that the kitchen knows best.

ICK: Dates. There are good surprise dates and there are bad surprise dates. Good surprise dates = your significant other treating you to an impromptu dinner. Bad surprise dates = dates sneakily added to sponge cakes, sauces or disguised in a chocolate coating.

Miles Buckeridge, Deputy Editor

PICK: Baked camembert. Burrata is dead. Its milky splurge now chalked out on the nation’s tables. Baked camembert with dippy bread, fresh from supper club exile, has returned to claim the throne.

ICK: Caviar on everything. The pricing mechanics of caviar seem to heavily borrow from the modern art world, and their gimmicky addition to pretty much any food stuff for the sole purpose of wealth signalling, earns a no to the roe from me.

Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor

PICK: Deep-fried pickles. Great late night/ post-bevy snack. Lasts longer than a handful of fries with just the right amount of sour.

ICK: Ketchupflavoured ice cream. Self-explanatory. A classic example of what happens when you have too much of a good thing, even if it’s just a carnival treat.

Pick n Icks

What’s On

PICK: Ramen.

For me, there isn’t any dish more comforting than a bowl of ramen. The traditional Japanese noodle dish can be made simple or extravagant, and you can’t really go wrong with either. Ready, set, slurp.

ICK: Sushi with meat. One food pairing I can’t comprehend is sushi made with meat instead of fish. In fact: I’d take pineapple on a pizza over wagyu-wrapped maki or chicken katsu sushi rolls any day.

Shelby Gee, Junior Reporter PICK: Cake, just any cake. Growing up, my mum always insisted that I would sell my soul for cake and that I’d choose a slice of cake over the party bags any day – and at the ripe age of 22, I stand by that choice.

ICK: Truffle on everything. Look, it’s not that I hate truffle – in fact I think it can be a great addition to a meal but when it’s added to every possible menu item in merry abandon, you’ve lost me.

Manaal Fatimah, Intern PICK: Hot Honey. I love me a good sweet and spicy combination and hot honey strikes equilibrium in beautiful fashion. Slap some on a crispy chicken tender and BAM – you’ve reached nirvana.

ICK: Cardamom pods in biryani. It’s a perennial struggle because you bite into one and suddenly everything is wrong in this world. In the words of one wise Miles Buckeridge – it hijacks your mouth.

Aarti Saundalkar, Online Reporter

PICK: Poke bowls. This customisable deconstructed sushi salad offers incredible depth and range of flavour. If you haven’t tried it yet, you need to get on the poke, mon. My topping pro tip is ahi tuna, doused in chilli sauce.

ICK: Matcha. I don’t get why people like matcha so much. To me, it looks and tastes like grass, and I will not be adding it to any of my already-perfect coffee any time soon.

Mabel Elizabeth, Intern PICK: Mushroom burgers. Mushrooms are not known for being the most fun-gi out there. But umami-packed ‘shrooms deserve recognition for being a versatile substitute for the meat in burgers.

ICK: Fried chicken with ice cream. Sweet and spicy is a controversial combo but for me, putting ice cream on fried chicken is the most nauseating of them all. Why would you choose to eat chicken swimming in a pool of sweet milk? Red flag.

WHAT DRIVES THE CAST AND CREW OF THE NEW GRAN TURISMO MOVIE p46

Words: Miles Buckeridge

WHAT’S ON IN CONVERSATION WITH THE STARS OF GRAN TURISMO

There

Out in UAE cinemas this month, Gran Turismo is less about the computer game that shares its name (although in a very meta way, it is also about that), than it is about the miraculous real life story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster who was recruited into a racing academy on a marketing exec’s gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) and the cast list includes Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Josha Stradowski and Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Horner. And we were lucky enough to catch up with key cast and crew whilst they were in town filming one of the movie’s key scenes. This is what happened, when What’s On met GT’s fast and famous...

What aspects of the real life Jann’s character did you want to make sure were portrayed in the film? Before this movie, I couldn’t even drive, so we had to solve that pretty quickly. But the thing that really stood out for me in conversations, was how much Jann grew through this experience. Like how introverted, shy and lost he felt before finding the GT Academy, and how ironically in these tiny, claustrophobic cockpit spaces, he really found himself. And he just grew into the person you see now, who’s extremely confident, knows what he wants,

knows himself – but the speed at which it happened, he went from being in his bedroom playing games to sitting on the podium at Le Mans in 12 months, that’s such insane acceleration.

You might have seen that Dubai Police have a lot of fast cars in their fleet. If you pulled a heist in Dubai, what’s your getaway car, and who’s driving?

I’m probably contractually obliged to say a Nissan GTR, and after all this experience, I’d have to be the driver.

FILM
INTERVIEW:
are no cheat codes for real life...
Archie Madekwe (Jann Mardenborough)

We’ve heard you’re a big gamer. Are there any videogames you’d like to see turned into movies or movies turned into videogames?

This is just my peculiar taste, but whilst videogame movies make a lot of money, I don’t love them and I think it’s because when you play a videogame you get to do what you want with ‘the thing’. Watching a movie, you sit back and take it in, with

Jann Mardenborough (the man whose real life story Gran Turismo is

based on)

Did doing a movie about your life dredge up any old trauma?

There was a moment that was difficult to revisit. It’s something I’ve processed for many years. And when the news was coming out that they want to make a film of my life and they want to include the Nürburgring, it brought up thoughts and emotions. My main concern was that it had to be represented properly. And it’s something that I made very clear has to be done right, because somebody lost their life, in that race, in a car that I was in control of. Freak circumstances. But they did do it right, and it was one of the few scenes that had to be CGI because they’ve remodeled the circuit in real life.

videogames you’re invested. I think the mediums are so different it’s hard to combine them, so this is why I think this [movie] is quite brilliant – because the videogame itself is a piece of the movie. It’s not trying to tell the story of GT, which is... there is no story. It has broader connotations. This kid goes on to do great things in the world from that videogame and I think that’s a fun thing to explore. Where videogames take us, how they take us there, those are ripe questions we should be asking and this movie dives into them.

Orlando

With Gran Turismo’s connection to the gaming world, we were wondering if we were to give you a cheat code for real life, what would it be?

I think something around martial arts, because I think it’s such a skill.

Josha Stradowski (Nicholas Capa, a rival driver)

What’s been your favourite track to go round?

This one (Dubai Autodrome) because it’s such a nice location. We’ve been in the cold for such a long time and Dubai’s such an amazing place to be. The Nürburgring in Germany is a very tough one, so I’m not sure if I can say I have a favourite, they’re all just very different. This one has many many turns, but we shot the most in Hungary. Who’s the better driver, you or Archie Madekwe? Well, we did some Go-Karting, and Capa was the winner.

THE SCARAB UNRAVELLING THE SUPER SECRETS OF

Blue Beetle, the next super-release from DC Studios, is scheduled to scuttle into UAE box offices on August 17. And despite the fact that its central character is less well-known than some of his spandex-toating, Kryptonitedodging, DC alumni – this is one of the most important movies the studio has worked on in years. It’s the story of Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo “Cobra Kai” Maridueña), just your average boy-nextdoor college grad who stumbles on a piece of alien tech and ends up as host marionette to a beetle-themed cyber entity called ‘the Scarab’. When bonded with Jaime it transforms into a super suit (not the sort you get 90 per cent off of, at mall store ‘closing down sales’), a weaponised

item of apparel that immediately renders our protagonist a tool of cosmic potency. And as we all know, with great power comes great expectations. Or something like that.

One of the reasons why Blue Beetle is such a key step on the DC journey is that James Gunn (CoCEO of DC Studios) has stated that Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle is the newly created DCU’s (the reboot for the DCEU) first character. The announcement came straight from Gunn’s chamber on the Inside of You podcast, and although he also clarified that Superman: Legacy will be the first DCU movie, the character’s anointment conveys a huge

amount of top-down faith in the cast, crew and vision of the director. What’s On was lucky enough to sit down with the film’s charismatic helmsman, director Angel Manuel Soto to find out what we can expect from this new dawn.

48 AUGUST 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // FILM FOCUS
What’s On talks to Blue Beetle Director, Angel Manuel Soto, about Miles Morales crossovers, kicking off a legacy and great responsibilities…

From the trailer it looks like Xolo is the perfect pick for Jaime. Was he somebody that you had in mind for the role right from the beginning?

Since the moment that I got the opportunity to work on this project, I couldn’t stop thinking about Xolo Maridueña to play the part. I had met him before, and he had a very positive impression on me. Even before Cobra Kai, when he was a kid. So when I got the project and started skimming the comic books again, and going deeper on it... it was just him. He looks like Jaime, he acts like him, I couldn’t think of anybody else in that role. So I was surprised and delighted to find out that he was also the fancast choice to play Jaime. Are there any characters you’d love to get on the big screen for any future Blue Beetle projects?

The opportunities are endless. I have always wanted him to eventually face The Reach (an imperialistic hoard of aliens). I know, I want him to face the Black Beetle. I also want him to have those encounters he had in the comics with the Green Lantern Corps, the arch enemies of The Reach and the Scarabs. I always liked the idea that the Justice League is involved – they’re after him, only to find out they need him. He’s the key to destroying a big earth threat. Blue Beetle really is a powerful force, with a unique manifestation of weapons. And Jaime himself, being the kid that he is, with such a powerful world destroying weapon, allows him to be face off or bond with all the super characters in the DC Universe. And who knows, I’ve always toyed with the idea of doing a crossover with Miles Morales, that could be cool.

What an amazing movie that would be. There’s also a line about Batman in the trailer, that cracked us up...

We’ve always had fun with it. Like, what if something happens and somebody finds that this world-destroying weapon is in the hands of this kid, who lives in a humble neighbourhood, and everyone wants to get. For example Batman – he wants to get it to stop it falling into the wrong hands.

And Batman finds out what Jaime’s uncle Rudy (George Lopez) said (he called Batman “a fascist”) and they have that moment where they meet. Because Uncle Rudy is a geek, he’s a conspiracy theorist, so he’d love Batman’s tech, and Batman would be like “I thought you said I was a fascist” and I think it would open up some really fun moments.

Blue Beetle has been labelled as the first live action superhero movie to feature a Latino in the lead role. Did you feel any pressure from the community to represent the culture in an authentic or specific way?

I didn’t feel pressure, I felt a responsibility. I wanted to make it as authentic as possible and as universal as possible, although I’m not of Mexican descent. Luckily our writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is, so he made sure all the nuances and idiosyncrasies from his culture were implemented in the script. Latinos are not a monolith, not every Latino is the same –so it’s difficult to make sure it’s something that everyone from the community can gather together and support, and then

at the same time, show versions of our culture to others that are not Latino so that they can still feel part of this journey. This hero is not just a hero for Latinos, he’s a hero for everyone. What can you tell us about the motivations of the villain of the piece, Conrad Carapax – The Indestructible Man (played by Raoul Max Trujillo)? When Gareth was working on the script, trying to figure out who Blue Beetle was going to face, we looked at all the different villains, and although Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) is the brains behind the operations, the one who is in control of Kord Industries when we begin the film, Carapax is like her muscle. We took the original vision of Conrad Carapax from the comics and incorporated elements of the OMAC Project (another limited comic series). We tried to create this super soldier, that has a lot of backstory and baggage with him. That’s where Raoul came in, and as a Latino, he comes with a lot of history, interventionism – creating a villain that has a little bit more depth than we’re used to. There’s a whole legacy behind him, so we try to tailor this villain to a way where he can face off against Blue Beetle, matching him in terms of power and energy, but also as a balance of plot, backstory and sub text.

BOUNCE X

Self-proclaimed as the world’s first freestyle terrain park, Bounce X at Festival City Mall is a 5,000 sqm attraction that takes the best bits from existing Bounce parks in Dubai, and connects them with other exciting parkour elements. Designed by Australian parkour athlete Sam Carter, the landscape at Bounce X features floating obstacles, slacklines, balance beams, circular trampolines, and sky-high stepping stones. While there are no structured coaching sessions, Bounce X is a great place for adults and children to practice independently. Bounce X, Dubai Festival City Mall, Mon to Thur 11am to 10pm, Fri 11am to midnight, Sat 10am to midnight, Sun 10am to 10pm, Dhs90. Tel: (0)4 304 9333. bounce.ae

How did you get into parkour?

I saw some guys practicing in a local park. It looked super-human and I was captivated. I went over, introduced myself, they showed me the ropes and the rest was history. I learned to expand what I thought I was capable of and find greater confidence.

Outside of your facility, where do you like to practice?

The beauty of parkour is that it can be practiced virtually anywhere. You can start with a low wall, a curb or hand railing. Sometimes I’m happy with a railing to practice balancing or other times I want walls for jumping and vaulting. Once you view obstacles as opportunities to move, you can find inspiration anywhere.

As an instructor at Parkour DXB, what exactly are you teaching kids to do? At Parkour DXB our goal is for our students to grow as individuals through that practice. We promote confidence, resilience and independence.

You and the Parkour DXB lads just won the coveted Gov Games. How did that feel?

It was an amazing experience. Whilst competitive formats are growing in parkour, as a practitioner you don’t get too many opportunities to put your skills to the test. Our closeness as a team was one of our biggest assets. Overcoming obstacles and challenges is what we live for.

What’s the craziest stunt you’d love to nail?

This is such a hard question to answer as the possibilities are endless. At this stage my goals are more around being able to continue training parkour for the rest of my life. I love the idea of still being able to do backflips in my seventies!

DISPELLING THE MYTHOS OF

58 AUGUST 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Why Mykonos is a surprisingly fun family getaway

If there’s one country in the world that is borderline guaranteed to melt away stress, it’s Greece. And Mykonos’ endless blue hues, sandy beaches, and whitewashed architecture amount to a soothing Odyssey for the soul. The Greek ‘Island of Light’, Mykonos, is many things –glamorous, hedonistic, nocturnal, paradisal, and in places, gilded with extravagance, but one word not often used to describe it, is peaceful.

We registered this dissonance approximately two hours after checking-in, while enjoying a laidback sunset dinner in one of the authentic seafront tavernas of Little Venice. In its heyday, the breezy island welcomed Golden Age A-Listers such as Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Kennedy, Mick Jagger, Grace Kelly, and Brigitte Bardot who were enamored by the magical light, beautiful alleys, and crystal-clear Aegean Sea.

Since then, Mykonos has evolved to become the (still sophisticated) party capital of the Cyclades; a clubber’s Xanadu that comes alive between the hours of 1am and 5am, not to mention the 24-hour beach clubs. In fact, if you Google “party island” it’s one of the first results that comes up after Ibiza. But beyond the beats and beach clubs,

Mykonos has so much more to offer. And, although it’s always likely to attract sun-seeking ravers, the island has a different side, a laidback loveliness that makes it perfectly prepped for families and other kinds of holiday makers.

As Anthony Bourdain once said, “So many of the good times travelling this world relate directly to finding a human face to associate with your destination, the food you eat, and the memories you keep forever”. For visitors who want to experience the island in authenticity and simplicity, from its ancient history to mesmerising nature, here is our guide…

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

1. Little Venice: The charming old town of Mykonos, from the iconic windmills to cobblestone alleys, is one of the most famous parts of the island. Shop at the little boutiques, eat your way through the seafront restaurants (we recommend Kastro’s for views and vibes or Meatropolitan for gyros and wine), check out the famous Paraportiani church, and watch the sunset beyond the sparkling Aegean Sea.

2. Vioma Organic Farm and Vineyard: Around a 15-minute drive inland (also a popular cycling route), this family-run vineyard and farm is an authentic Mykonos experience we’d definitely do again. Tucked away in the hills, start with a free guided tour of the vines and farm, feed the farm animals, and sample some of their organic Mykonian wines (EUR15 for three glasses) with a selection of Greek cheeses.

3. Zuma Mykonos: From an authentic Mykonian experience to something a little more cosmopolitan, a pool day at Zuma tops our

INSIDE TIP: Thanks to Mykonos’s dinky size (just six miles long and nine miles wide), nothing is ever more than a 30-minute drive away and the best way to head off the beaten path and discover the island’s hidden gems is to rent a car (costing around EUR60 per day during peak season).

recommendations for its unmatched views, stunning infinity pool, and adorable children’s play area. Head here early to secure one of the floating sunbeds followed by a late lunch. Neither you nor the little ones will want to leave.

4. Delos and Rhenia: Explore empty beaches and archaeological ruins with a boat trip to Mykonos’ Cycladic sisters, Rhenia and Delos. The Aegean Ventures boat drops anchor in a remote cove of Rhenia where the family serve a traditional Greek lunch of salad, tzatziki, and souvlaki, while you jump in and soak up the sun before heading to UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Apollo, Delos.

5. Kiki’s Tavern: You’re likely to have heard of this (notso) hidden gem of a restaurant. Worth crossing the island for, Kiki’s Tavern is located on the breathtaking Agios Sostis beach. No electricity, no walls, no sign, you’ll know when you see it by the queue of people waiting outside. Say efcharistó as the charismatic owner hands out free rosé and be sure to order the anchovies (EUR12) and octopus (EUR30).

Disclaimer: This is not your average back-to-back packed holiday itinerary. But then again, this is not your average escape. According to a local, “There is nothing you must see in Mykonos.” Instead, you allow your senses to guide you and, through slowing down and savouring moments, you’ll uncover the magic of the island. Eat, stroll, drink, eat some more, repeat…

Pelagos Sunset is a gorgeous boutique retreat located in the Agia Sofia area, an easy 15-minute walk from the old town. The modern, family-friendly hotel is home to eight spacious and secluded guest rooms, all with a terrace offering dreamy views of the Aegean Sea and unmissable sunsets. The large seawater pool is the centrepiece of the hotel with plenty of sun-soaked beds and comfortable chairs enticing you not to leave. There’s no restaurant but light snacks can be requested at the bar throughout the day including sandwiches, toast, fresh fruit, and Greek yoghurt. Pelagos exudes a certain remoteness and freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere - a perfect escape to a traditional Mykonos experience away from the party crowds. Not only that, the down-to-earth and thoughtful service, with the lovely Zoe and Mardi, will make sure your stay is one to remember. We’d almost prefer to keep this holiday hideaway hush-hush. From Dhs863 per night. @pelagosunset

Mykonos Theoxenia

Built in the 1960s, this landmark hotel was the island’s first fivestar hotel and makes for a sophisticated stay in a central location. Overlooking the iconic windmills, the newly refurbed Theoxenia is a stone’s-throw away from the maze streets of Little Venice and the old port, perfect for those looking to balance their energetic days with a place where serenity reigns. The contemporary, light-filled space is given a garden-like ambiance surrounded by olive trees, palms, and bougainvillea. The rooms do the basics well, so as not to distract from the beauty of its ocean-blue views, with a spacious balcony, warm accents of terracotta and wood, and marble ensuites. Inspired by the laid-back charm of the Cycladic lifestyle, guests can expect an authentically Greek breakfast buffet from spinach pies and a selection of cheeses to Greek donuts and fresh fruit. While Theoxenia is a family-friendly hotel, it’s best suited to couples, solo travellers, or families with older children.

Limassol LIVE, LOVE,

A City of Dreams on an island of sunbeams

When you first think of Cyprus, what comes to mind? The archeological sites of Paphos? The birthplace of Aphrodite? For many it’s the party city of Ayia Napa, which has an expanse of pristine beaches and countless trendy clubbing locales scattered around the city. But just an hour away is the very different, super laidback, city of Limassol.

Cyprus’ southernmost city is located a 50-minute hop from Lanarca International Airport. Along the way you’ll journey past mountain rock and leafy canopy, the less seen side of Cypriot beauty. Limassol is a stunning, booming,

and increasingly cosmopolitan enclave with rich and gorgeously diverse cultural threads. Unsurprising perhaps given that Cyprus is a melting pot island – just skimming the history books will reveal how coveted a prize it was for many nations. And you can still see the storied remnants of different customs and traditions rooted in the Cypriot way, today.

Chief amongst the roster of things to do in Limassol, include walking the pretty promenades, relaxing at bougie beach bars, sipping quality coffee in the countless cafés and enjoying big James Bond vibes at the recently opened casino.

EXPLORING THE CITY

One of our favourite sight-seeing expeditions takes you through the old city of Kourion. Along the way you’ll pass visual clues alluding to the deep history of colonisation that Cyprus was built on.

From the Greeks to the British, Ottoman, Turkish and Roman Empires – remnants of the war and the lives lived in Cyprus are clearly depicted through the destruction and reconstruction of Kourion. The city today invites visitors to learn about the Greek settlers, with an agora, amphitheatre and what would

have been a bath house, learn about how women were revered, and how business would have been conducted in the bath houses.

Consider a visit to the castle of St. George where King Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, the only British royal wedding to take place outside of the UK. Expert guided tours are optional and give you the best experience. Onto slightly more modern sight-seeing, wander through the Limassol marina and along the pier where you can shop for souvenirs and trinkets before stopping off to enjoy a traditional Cypriot coffee and biscuits.

MUST TRY

When ordering a coffee in one of the many cafés, be sure to try a frappe. Similar to the viral Korean Dalgona coffee, a frappe is a whipped coffee drink that is poured over ice with either milk or water. We recommend limited sugar, and water for a creamy iced americano. Paired with loukoumi and baklava it is the perfect afternoon treat.

WHERE TO STAY

Our top pick for your base camp is the box-fresh contemporary resort, City of Dreams Mediterranean. It boasts five pool areas, an adventure park complete with zipline, a trampoline zone, spa, casino, and four signature dining outlets. The rooms are bright and airy, the furniture cut from modern European cloth, and the glass fronted bathroom comes with a stand-alone bathtub. Views overlook the pool area and, in the distance, the ocean beckons. A Waverider surf attraction and the adventure park can be found in the far corner of the resort just off to the side of the pools, perfect for keeping the kids (and big kids) busy during the day. A onenight stay in a City of Dreams Mediterranean starts from Dhs1,803 per night.

Rixos The Palm Hotel & Suites

Sometimes all you need to hear are those three magical little words. Words that let you know everything is going to be ok. Words that help give life meaning, and make the world a brighter place. Those words are of course “it’s all inclusive”. And that’s the case for all stays at Rixos The Palm Hotel & Suites. A five-star resort sitting on one end of Dubai’s globally renowned manmade island network. But how does it rate as a family hotel? And how does it compete with its glamorous Palm neighbours? Join us as we go all in...

LOCATION

Rixos The Palm Hotel & Suites is right at the end of Palm Jumeirah’s East Crescent. That means it comes with some pretty dreamy Gulf and Dubai Marina views. It’s also far enough away from the rave-pace of the mainland, to make staycations feel like a real escape.

LOOK AND FEEL

The resort is undergoing some light redevelopment work at the moment so first impressions aren’t as impactful as some of the other glitzy Palm resorts. Though once inside, that trademark Rixos Turkish hospitality is on full display. High ceilings and glass walls fill the lobby area with a warm light, whilst a pianist and violinist lay down a sophisticated soundtrack. Interior design touches of

dark wood and marble veneer contrast with the Baleric whites of the various exterior pool complexes.

ROOMS

We stayed in a three-bedroom family suite, a huge space with modular living and dining areas, and an ensuite for each bedroom. There is a wide range of options to cater for pretty much all potential entourage line-ups, from lead in categories fit for couples, to wellness rooms with pool access, several penthouse fit-out varieties, as well as four and five-bedroom pool suites. Part of the hotel’s renovation project involves upgrading and making improvements to some of the rooms.

FACILITIES

This is where Rixos The Palm Hotel & Suites scores the big game points. On campus you’ll find the well-worth-avisit Anjana Spa, a beauty salon, fitness centre and Serenity clinic. The Rixy Kid’s Club has a full edutainment schedule, its own mini waterpark and the Rixinema, which shows recent family-friendly movie

releases. There are a few outdoor pools to choose from, staffed by such endearingly charming, incredibly attentive staff – it’s almost impossible to pick your ‘favourite holiday waiter’. There’s a swim-up bar, watersport activities and live entertainment in leisure hubs spread throughout the hotel.

FOOD AND DRINK

Rixos’ ‘Ultra All Inclusive’ package means you really don’t have to worry about carrying your phone around for the royal Apple Pay wave. And while, food probably isn’t the biggest attraction to this sort of resort, the hotel has plenty of range beyond the standard buffet restaurant. There’s an Italian eatery, a steakhouse, a seafood restaurant and a Turkish patisserie. There are pool bars, a detox bar, a sports pub and shisha cabana network. Is it, cumulatively, the best dining experience on the Palm? No. Is it beyond what you’d expect from most other all inclusive resorts around the world? Yes.

ROOM RATES

You can pick up some great rates at Rixos The Palm Hotel & Suites at the moment (Dhs2,800 for two nights) – but their allinclusive daycation offer might be just the ticket for residents hanging around this summer. With packages from just Dhs399, you get breakfast, lunch, soft and house beverages as well as pool and beach access, plus the option to send the kids to the fabulous Rixy Club.
