EDITOR’S PICKS

Liv Round Crystal Bag, Beyond The Beach Dhs595, sanddollardubai.com

Beoplay HX Headphones, Bang and Olufsen Dhs2,660, ounass.ae

I never have been, much to the dismay of my green-fingered, alfresco-adoring family. I’d always prefer to be indoors as a child, writing or colouring, then glued to the computer as a teenager – while my sisters would be out horse riding, scooting around on their bikes, or generally just enjoying the great outdoors.

But in a city like Abu Dhabi, it’s impossible not to get excited by the return of the cooler weather, and as such, the outdoor season. Beach days are no longer restricted to sunrise power walks down the corniche and fully-fledged days of basking in the rays are back. Openair attractions like Ferrari World Abu Dhabi and Jubail Mangrove Park are so much more enjoyable. And our favourite alfresco restaurants get to go back to doing what they do best (you can check out some of the capital’s finest from p38).

Then of course, there’s all the brilliant desert adventures to tick off. Because while there’s much to embrace in the inner throngs of Abu Dhabi, the allure of the picturesque, peaceful desert that fringes our city is impossible to ignore. So, this issue is a love letter to our rolling dunes, the thousands of stories they keep, and the endless memories waiting to happen within them. From exhilarating adventures like quad biking and sandboarding, to more low-tempo but equally as show-stopping experiences, like glamping under the stars or staycationing at a fivestar resort nestled within the sandy plains – even us indoor people can’t keep away.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Enjoying a taste of the high life at… Address Beach Resort

Address Beach Resort’s 77th floor rooftop infinity pool is a show-stopping Guinness World Record holder. Book a cabana to access the infinity pool, and it comes with access to a lounge-style retreat from the heat. The Asian fusion menu (try the grilled lobster), excellent selection of chilled rosé, and top-notch service make this one of the city’s most wow-worthy pool days. @addressbeachresort

Adding to my reading list with… Kinokuniya

The decision to plonk the Kinokuniya bookstore right opposite the Dubai Mall Metro Link Bridge was a smart one. I have enough in my ‘left unread’ pile as it is, but Kinokuniya’s pull resulted in me leaving with yet another book. National Treasures – Saving the nation’s art in World War II by Caroline Shenton. It’s about a daring plan to save important art collections during the invasion of Poland in 1939.

@bookskinokuniyauae

Adding to my sneaker collection with… Nike

Shelby’s Law – if I see a pair of kicks I like, I’ll probably end up buying them. Last weekend my brother and I rushed down to the Nike store in Dubai Mall to snag an official South Africa Rugby World Cup jersey and once they were in the cart, I moseyed over to the women’s shoe section and instantly fell in love with a silky white and green pair of low dunks. Oops, and into the cart they fell. @nike

Enjoying an evening of stellar food at… Moonrise

Here at What’s On, we love supporting homegrown businesses. And Michelin-Starred Moonrise has been on my list for a while. Chef Solemann’s 11-course tasting menu is a creative representation of the city’s culinary scene. Highlight? The ‘grilled cheese.’ Don’t ask, just try. One of my most memorable dining experiences in Dubai. @moonrise.xyz

– Tamara Wright, Online Reporter

Minami Jazz Night at luscious Japanese haunt Mimi Kakushi is every bit as charming as it sounds. Sitting there tapping my toes to the band’s joyous, jazzy tunes, I felt a little bit like a fly on the wall, but in the best way possible. I was in profound admiration of them doing their thing. Inspired by the echoing jazz strains of 1920’s Osaka, the cocktail menu is a thing of beauty and genius of its own.

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Through MY EYES Loujain Adada

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to family-friendly spots they adore, must-try restaurants and standout attractions. This month, we chat to Loujain Adada (@loujainaj), entrepreneur, mother and star of Dubai Bling. Here she shares some of her favourite spots that you need on your radar.

I love Nobu, the high-end Japanese restaurant at Atlantis, The Palm. I fell in love with the style and atmosphere of the restaurant – and the food is fantastic too. I like to go with my daughters. Another restaurant I love is Fouquet’s, it has the best French food in the city and reminds me of Paris and Cannes where we usually spend our summers. And I love Lucia’s for Italian food.

@nobudubai, @fouquets.dubai, @luciasdubai

Atlantis The Royal is my favourite place for a UAE staycation – I’ve been so many times with my kids, we consider it our second home. We’ve shared many happy memories at this resort. For family getaways, be sure to check out Aquaventure. It’s the world’s largest waterpark and has loads of fun attractions.

@atlantistheroyal

One of my favourite places to chill out in the city is Summersalt beach club at Jumeirah Al Naseem. You can often find me here on weekends, catching up with friends and enjoying a fun, relaxing weekend.

@summersaltbeachclub

Everyone should visit Dubai Parks and Resorts. There are two theme parks and a waterpark in one, so it’s great for families as there’s a variety of attractions for all tastes and ages.

@dubaiparksresorts

I head to W Hotel - Mina Seyahi when I want to disconnect and get pampered. I like their Bar-B spa and gym – I’m very enthusiastic about working out. It’s not only healthy for the body but also good for the mind, it helps you relax. At the end of the day, health is wealth.

@wdubaiminaseyahi

I recently discovered the charms of Ras Al Khaimah. It’s a unique part of the UAE and full of adventure. Visit the Hajar mountains for active attractions such as hiking, zip lining, and cycling; or the stunning beachfront resorts to relax.

While the vastness of the Abu Dhabi desert and its sprawling golden sands is certainly picturesque, these dunes also play host to a splattering of exciting activities for the year-round thrill seeker in you. Here are a few ways you can get out and get your hands dirty

WORDS: DINESH RAMANATHAN

DESERT DELIGHTS WHATSON.AE | OCTOBER 2023 15

Abu Dhabi’s vast desert has been earmarked by locals and visitors alike, as a preferred spot for glampers and staycation seekers. While camping under the stars might be a familiar concept, glamping amidst the dunes takes on whole new meaning as we head out and away from the city lights to enjoy the stillness, fresh air and the gigantic expanse of dreamy desert landscapes that seem like they’re right out of a Disney movie.

But while cutting off from the stresses of the city is a prospect that appeals to many, abandoning the comforts of contemporary living is not a prospect a lot of us are ready to try right off the bat. Enter glamping, a redefined, modern-day version of traditional camping with all the urban comforts to go with it. Here are some of the most popular glamping spots we recommend you try, within hours of the city.

GLAMPING

Jebel Hafit Desert Park

Managed by Abu Dhabi-born Pura Eco Retreats, Jabel Hafit draws scores of people over the weekend for its picturesque views of the Hajar Mountains in Al Ain. If you want to camp here, you have four options. There’s basic camping for which you need to bring your own equipment, or a trio of glamping options. First up, a fully serviced camping experience where you sleep in a Bedouin tent and wake up to a fresh breakfast; or for something more luxe, you can book one of the furnished, five-star skylight domes or sky bubbles, complete with air-conditioning and plush five-star comforts. Holiday-makers come here to hike the heritage trails, mountain bike (rental available), enjoy dune buggy tours, ride camels and breathe in the fresh air. Those with a historical thirst should make the trek to Jebel Hafit’s two archeological sites. One, a neolithic excavation, dates back 8,000 years, whilst the other, a 5,000-year-old tomb was excavated in 1959 on the orders of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan.

16 OCTOBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE DESERT DELIGHTS

Bab Al Nojoum, Al Mugheirah

When it comes to eco-glamping retreats that invite you to escape it all, Bab Al Nojoum really do pull out all the stops. In addition to their Hudayriyat property, they also run a camping experience in Al Mugheirah, in the Al Mirfa area. Although this isn’t exactly set right amongst the desert dunes, its remote location gives you that same feel as a desert escape. You can try a list of activities here, including tree planting, flying kites, fishing, horse riding, falconry, snorkeling, hiking and biking, to name only a few. Your camping options include one and two-bedroom cabins, as well as gorgeous Airstream campers.

Bab Al Nojoum, Al Mugheirah, Al Mirfah, Abu Dhabi, from Dhs731. Tel: (0)2 895 3777. @babalnojoum_

Arabian Nights Village

If you’re looking for a traditional Arabian experience, they don’t come much more authentic than Arabian Nights Village. Tucked away amongst the dunes, this low-lying glamping retreat is designed to resemble a Bedouin village of yesteryear. Its charm is in its ties to traditional Emirati life, although you still get a few modern comforts, with plush beds and en-suite bathrooms – although there’s a deliberate policy to have no wi-fi or TVs so you can properly switch-off. Within the village-like resort, there’s a chilled swimming pool and a restaurant serving Arabic and international specialities, but the adventure lies off-property, with guests able to book experiences like camel rides, sand boarding and quad biking to make the most of their desert surroundings.

WHATSON.AE | OCTOBER 2023 19

If you live here, chances are you spend the lion’s share of your time in the city, or on the islands. If you’re visiting, we’re sure you want to leave with memories that will last a lifetime. Either way, here’s a quick list of bucket list activities we recommend you try, to get the best of the Abu Dhabi desert experience.

BUCKET LIST DESERT ADVENTURES

Explore the Empty Quarter

The Rub Al Khali, or the Empty Quarter, is a region packed with fine golden and red sand. Serene, still and almost as vast as the sky above, it is one of the driest regions in the world and remains largely unexplored, making it an incredible place to camp. One of the most interesting spots in the Empty Quarter is the infamous Tel Moreeb dune, a 300-metre tall mountain of sand that attracts the most adventurous of offroaders. Unless you’re exceptionally skilled, hang back at the base and watch others go full throttle up the monster dune, which is plenty to get your pulse racing as you enjoy the desert vastness and soak in a stillness that is unheard of in the city.

Visit the Al Wathba Salt Lakes

With its mesmerising blue waters and massive salt deposits, the Al Wathba Salt Lake is a manmade lake that needs to be on top of your bucket list. The salt comes from salt flats called ‘Sabkha’, which are a byproduct of the arid coastal climate of the area. The giant salt pads take years to develop, and their existence is thought to be because the water originating from the pipes somehow cuts its way through the already existing salt and mineral deposits underneath the surface sand, creating these gorgeous crystalline salt pads that you’ve probably seen on a couple dozen posts on your feed by now.

This scenic location is regularly hunted down by snap-happy tourists and road-trippers and has also been used as a spot for picnics and camping, as it is genuinely one of the most scenic locations in the region. The best time to visit is in the cooler months, obviously due to tolerable temperatures that will let you explore the desert, but also because the lake is generally dried up during summer. If you want a glimpse of the beautiful blue waters in all their glory, the best time to visit would be between October and March.

To reach the Al Wathba Long Salt Lake location, take the E65 or E30 route and follow the directions on Google Maps. For reference, it is about 40 minutes away from Abu Dhabi’s city centre.

DESERT
DELIGHTS

Master the art of sandboarding

No snowboarding facilities in the capital? No matter. Experience the thrill of sandboarding on Abu Dhabi’s massive desert dunes. The seemingly endless soft sand will have you shredding down some of the largest dunes in the world, in the Liwa Oasis on the edge of the Empty Quarter. Word of advice, pick your dune based on your sandboarding experience, as the less steep ones are a great place to begin your adventure. As well, keep an eye on the temperatures and be sure to hit the slopes during off-peak sunshine hours.

Dhs280, inclusive of 4x4 off-roading. outdoortrip.com

Stop by the aweinspiring fossil dunes

When visiting the Long Salt Lake, you can also spot the famed fossil dunes. These jaw-dropping formations are known for their unique appearance owing to a combination of sand, wind, climate and of course, time, and feel worlds away from the city. Estimated to be over four million years old, the fossil dunes also make for great pictures and are a must-visit if you enjoy natural treasures. Just be careful to leave them in the same condition that you found them.

Go on a dreamy desert safari

Fancy a desert safari and dinner under the stars? Experience the Abu Dhabi desert like never before. Pack yourselves into a mighty Land Cruiser, as a trained operator takes you on a tour of the desert that involves plowing through the sand at angles that will have you feeling like you’re on an amusement park ride. These shiny white Cruisers will spit sand from all sides as they skid, slide and bounce over the majestic red and golden dunes, giving you a tour of the desert that you’d never have imagined. The desert safari package also includes other fun activities, like visiting a camel farm, sitting down for traditional Shisha, enjoying an authentic barbecue feast, and being entertained at a belly dance show. If you’re feeling like experiencing the real deal, in most cases you can also hop on a camel and take a quick lap, with photo ops also available to add to your memories.

Dhs280. getyourguide.com

Race through the dunes on a quad bike

While you may not be sufficiently trained to pilot a Land Cruiser sideways over the dunes, you can still feel the thrill of busting a machine through the desert. Get on a quad bike and enjoy exciting off-road action in a popular adventure activity that does not require prior experience. That said, make sure to maintain safe speeds, especially while turning. To ensure your safety, you will be under the watchful eye of quad biking experts who will ride with you, as you throttle through the Abu Dhabi desert and enjoy the wonderful scenes that greet your eyes.

Abu Dhabi Showdown Week promises pop-ups, a huge concert, and the small matter of an action-packed UFC 294 card…

WORDS: ALICE HOLTHAM

SHOWDOWN WEEK WHATSON.AE | OCTOBER 2023 23

Let’s get ready to rumble… UFC returns to fight island (or Yas Island, for those non-UFC buffs) this month. But around the gripping fight card on Saturday October 21, a bumper schedule of events, pop-ups, concerts and more will take place from October 16 to 22 as the capital celebrates the fifth anniversary of Abu Dhabi Showdown Week, inviting fans to soak up unmissable action all week long.

THE FIGHT CARD

The big one

The main event on Saturday October 21 will see a second mouth-watering face-off between former UFC lightweight champion and record-breaking (most finishes, most submissions) Brazilian Charles Oliveira, one of the UFC’s best grapplers and the one man Dagestani army and Khabib protege, Islam Makhachev. The pair last touched gloves in the octagon in October 2022 at UFC 280, when Makhachev defeated Oliveira by submission (arm triangle choke) in the second round, so we can expect serious fireworks when both competitors battle it out this October. Will it be repeat or revenge for Oliveira?

Also on the card

Alongside the main event, additional bouts on October 21 include number 2 ranked UFC light heavyweight contender Magomed Ankalaev, who returns to action against sixth-ranked Johnny Walker, in a bout that’s sure to bring the heat to the octagon at Etihad Arena.

In the middleweight bout, Abu Dhabi will see the highly anticipated return of Khamzat Chimaev who will face Paulo Costa.

Currently ranked number 11, UFC middleweight contender Nassourdine Imavov, fighting out of Paris, will face off against Ikram Aliskerov.

UFC veteran and number 10 ranked flyweight contender Tim Elliott will arive at the Etihad Arena, with plans to become the first person to defeat rising prospect, number 11 ranked Muhammad Mokaev.

SHOWDOWN WEEK 24 OCTOBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Charles Oliveira Islam Makhachev

THE BIG GIG

ABrit popstar and former boyband member might not seem like a typical Showdown Week candidate, but his star-power and showmanship has made Robbie Williams one of the world’s greatest entertainers. And he’ll be bringing his 25 Years of Hits world tour to the Etihad Arena on Wednesday, October 18.

Known as one of the best live acts of his generation, Robbie Williams has been captivating audiences for the last two-and-a-half decades. His show promises a song book of countless sing-along hits including Angels, Let Me Entertain You, Millennium and She’s The One

Prior to going solo, Robbie Williams was a founding member of the beloved boyband Take That. After going out on his own, Robbie Williams became one of pop music’s leading lights, releasing 7 UK No 1 tracks, including Rock DJ, Candy and Radio

Tickets start from Dhs395, with golden circle upgrades available for Dhs995.

FAN EXPERIENCES

The fight night fun extends beyond the Etihad Arena to Yas Mall for a week-long line-up of combat sports-themed fun, from October 16 to 22. Whether you’ve snapped up tickets to UFC 294 or not, everyone is welcome to get in on the action at the Yas Mall pop-up, located at Town Square.

Although full details are yet to be confirmed, the fun-filled week promises athlete meet and greets, fitness challenges, culinary deals and more as UFC fever takes over Yas Island. Last year, gaming zones, reaction challenges, photo ops and prizes formed part of the UFC Fan Experience, with a similar level of allencompassing entertainment expected at the Yas Mall pop-up this year.

Just like last year, fans will be able to get a glimpse of UFC stars in action as the fighters take part in open workouts on October 18 at the Yas Mall Fan Zone. Expect striking, grappling, and some seriously intense stare-offs.

This is a snazzy concept at Reem Mall, which sees players solving, climbing, and scoring their way through a series of challenges, spread across a total of 32 exciting rooms. GAME ON 30 OCTOBER 2023 | WHATSON.AE

TEAM WHAT’S ON TURN BACK THE YEARS TO THEIR FAVOURITE ARCADE GAMES…

What is your favourite retro arcade game?

Pac-Man was my jam. What do you enjoy/miss most about it?

I’ll tell you what I don’t miss – the all-consuming frustration when one of the ghosts would catch me with about five dots to go. Who is your all-time favourite character in the game, and why? You can’t pick anyone other than Pac-Man. He knows his mission, he’ll do anything for the cause, and you can always count on him to get back up when the chips are down.

Favourite retro arcade game: Time Crisis, an FPS with IRL shooty pistols

What do you enjoy/miss most about it?

The jagged polygon pixels that represented the absolute zenith of 90s gaming technology have not stood the test of time, but what has stayed with me, other than distended biceps from holding the clunky gun through multiple ‘continues’, was how well it immersed you in the action. You can go full John Wick mode on almost endless waves of hapless goons. Just remember to ABR, Always Be Reloadin’. Who is your all-time favourite character in the game, and why?

The blue guy, let’s call him Steve.

Favourite retro arcade game: Street Fighter II (1991)

What do you enjoy/miss most about it?

This was my introduction to video games. The character development was great, the costumes were catchy and each fighter belonged to a different part of the world and fought in a different style. You could shoot Hadokens with karateka Ryu, launch Sonic Booms with aviator Guile and go full beast mode with Brazilian Blanka, as long as you had change left in your pockets as the countdown began. Who is your all-time favourite character in the game, and why?

M.Bison, for his chilling aura and psycho power.

Favourite retro arcade game: Mortal Kombat (1992)

What do you enjoy/miss most about it?

It was probably one of the first games I played with my brother and his friends. Looking back now, the game was definitely too violent for us kids, but there was just something about the button mashing and finishing moves (fatalities!) that made me play for hours on end. Sorry, homework...

Who is your all-time favourite character in the game, and why? Scorpion, he had some pretty ‘killer’ moves.

Favourite retro arcade game: Lemmings

What do you enjoy/miss most about it?

I have very fond memories of playing Lemmings, an addicting puzzle adventure game on my grandparents’ PlayStation. You lead the cute little green-haired creatures through the underground, digging, climbing, and floating from umbrellas to the next level, with the occasional squeaky sound effects, ‘oh no’.

Favourite retro arcade game: Pinball machines

What do you enjoy/miss most about it?

I always used to race to see what kind of pinball machines were available at the different arcades and I always just remember having the best time playing them.

Who is your all-time favourite character in the game, and why?

Not a character, but at Wavehouse they have a Led Zeppelin-themed pinball machine and that is quite a fun one.

LPM - BEYOND THE BURRATA

What’s On dives in, fork first, to taste test a few lesser-known LPM specials…

Avisit to LPM is always a reliable, top-in-its-class, Riviera-inspired treat. I sneak in there from time to time, and always have exactly the same thing. I don’t even look at the menu. I’m a creature of habit. It’s always the burrata with cherry tomatoes, and the endive salad with that pungent gorgonzola. Then the lamb chops and gratin dauphinoise, both of which nourish my soul and make my heart sing. It’s my fail-safe, happy place. Not this time.

I’m in LPM Abu Dhabi on a lively Tuesday night, and I’m looking at the menu with the help of the charming general manager, Despot Milivojevic, who’s delighted to help me in my quest for the unusual.

Starters arrive and we have grilled aubergine with mozzarella and prawns (Dhs105), king crab and tomato tart (Dhs168), stuffed squash blossoms with

vegetable ratatouille (Dhs70), and, to my delight, the burrata (Dhs105). “You can’t come to LPM and not order the burrata,” says Despot.

Each dish is rich in colour. The grilled aubergine is like an elevated parmigiana, with a smattering of chopped prawns providing welcome texture. The king crab tart is presented to us like an expertlycrafted item from a patisserie with a wafer-thin base, topped in tomato petals and chopped chives. It’s classy, technically brilliant, and the delicious hint of spice in the crab meat provides a wonderful punch. Rounding out the trio of unusual starters is a squash blossom special, a trinity of primary colours, all yellow, red, and green, which celebrates the French staple of ratatouille with aplomb. Then, of course, there’s the burrata. Rich, creamy

and pillow-soft. Like an old friend, I’m really pleased to see it there.

For mains, we zone in on the 400g grilled rib-eye (Dhs354). Cooked in the Josper oven and served with a lovely caper relish and tarragon mustard, it’s a wellseasoned steak. Alas, there’s a little too much of the flavourpacked fat trimmed off, and I find myself yearning for their juicy lamb chops. Thankfully, the gratin dauphinoise rocks up tableside and all’s right with the world. So, there you have it. Two Old Faithfuls mixed in with four new dishes, three of which I can’t wait to order again. Proof that it pays off to be brave, especially when you’re dining at LPM.

LPM Abu Dhabi, The Galleria Al Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi, Mon to Fri 12pm to 4pm and 6pm to 11pm, Sat and Sun 12.30pm to 4pm and 6pm to 11pm.

REVIEW: OAK ROOM

A sleek steakhouse where you celebrate a special occasion, or simply create one

Vintage rock ‘n’ roll powers the Oak Room at The Abu Dhabi Edition, as we’re greeted with framed art celebrating legendary musical icons and beats courtesy of The Police’s Walking

On The Moon Elegant candles flicker on tables, complementing the wooden furniture, and we’re presented flashlightstyle lamps to scan a grand menu that is about to take centre stage in minutes.

When we arrive at the Oak Room, we’re among the first guests. By the time we’re done with the breadbasket, many more have joined us. People settle into cosy corners, some enjoying an intimate evening, others, like us, just intent on starting the weekend on a majestic note.

Service is top class. We’re introduced to their private dining room, a vast back-ofhouse and a walk-in freezer that stocks juicy steaks from Australia, Japan and

the US. Our hosts find seconds between ensuring smooth operations to chat with guests. They don’t miss the details either, as we notice the logo embossed on ice in our welcome beverage.

We’re brought the sourdough bread and butter to kick off proceedings for the evening. While signature crispy crusts are all for the taking, silky smooth butter is the star. This combination is a classic, and while we’ve been guilty of filling up on bread in the past, we remember to leave space for what’s about to come.

Next up is a chef-special, a neat ricotta bite served in a cone, reminiscent of the inimitable soft serve, before we’re back in the moment. The dish is immersed in a miniature bowl of aromatic cumin.

Our starter arrives, juicy hand-dived scallops (Dhs160) coupled with white asparagus and asparagus purée. The

sauce is a superstar. The purée is foamy and flavourful, with hints of onion, green onion and almonds. Amid a whirlpool of flavour, you taste chewy, golden-brown scallops that make their presence felt.

So far, so good, but our main is the true showstopper, a well-done Black Onyx Striploin (Dhs275) from Down Under, served with triple cooked chips (Dhs30) and a tray of fresh asparagus (Dhs50). Crispy, high-fat and beautifully done, the luscious steak is one to savour.

A sweet tooth-sedating Berries Eton Mess (Dhs40) is our dessert of choice, which teleports us to Wimbledon’s Centre Court, slender slabs of meringue and fresh strawberries hitting all the right notes as we wrap up our evening.

Oak Room, The Abu Dhabi Edition, Mon to Fri 6pm to 12am, Sat 12:30pm to 12am, Sun 12:30 to 5pm. @oakroomabudhabi

REVIEW: SLRP RAMEN

Fuss-free Japanese dining has landed at Huna Yas

SLRP is surprisingly easy, and simultaneously hard to find. Tucked away into a corner of Yas Mall’s Huna Yas dining experience, the muchawaited ramen spot is almost lurking in the shadows, as are most eateries at Huna. But once you’re through the door, the neon sign is impossible to miss.

We’re admittedly excited to dine at SLRP, since its launch in the capital last month. From the minds behind Dubai’s multiaward winning 3Fils, come bowl after bowl of authentic Japanese specialities, and we’re greeted with an elaborate menu, with scores of interesting prospects to consider.

SLRP is one of the most relaxed dining spots you’ll find yourself at in Abu Dhabi. You don’t feel the pressures of being seated at a fancy fine dining spot, or eyeballs discreetly gaping as you dine. The vibe is fun, and the tables are spacious and comfortable. You could be here for a breather amid laps of retail therapy, or on your way back from the world’s fastest rollercoaster. And while you’re in the company of multiple brands, you’re never too far away from the aura, and the flavours, of the SLRP banner.

Is SLRP ‘quick service’? Perhaps in terms of how fast your food is served, but certainly not in terms of its quality. You get the multi-tiered, elaborate dining experience you came for, except it all arrives at your table in fast-food time. The duality is truly enjoyable. The staff are prompt, fun and attentive, ready to help with recommendations and quick to serve up popular favourites. We’re presented paper bibs with signature SLRP branding and illustrations once we order the Miso bowl, and amused as we are, we’re quick to realise their functionality when the steaming bowls arrive.

We kick things off with a crispy handful of their triple cooked chips (Dhs14), generous strips of fried potato that almost resemble fried pickles. Served with barbecue sauce and garlic mayo, we’re tempted to dip and dab, but the potatoes are fragrant and demand a bite on their own. Connoisseurs of anything in the French-fry family will savour these, with crispy potato skins on the outer and soft, finely-cooked inners striking the perfect balance to get your appetite on its way. For beverages, we’re recommended the Shikuwasa (Dhs38 for 200ml), a citrusy, ginger-infused punch that is surprisingly refreshing.

Once our sensory engines are activated, we order the avo maki roll (Dhs24), neat, refreshing rolls of avocado and cucumber that go a long way in beating the island weather, especially paired with a swig of the Shikuwasa. When we decide to unravel SLRP’s seafood specialities, we opt for the classic salmon sashimi (Dhs46), signature silkiness lacing every bite. The portion sizes seem just right, and while we’re sufficiently refuelled, we’re not incapacitated. To just about wrap things up, we’re served the spicy miso (Dhs88), packed with flavour, generous amounts of ramen and strong hints of seafood, with clam and fish soup firing up the flavour. Our server tempts us with a side of the cheesecake (Dhs48) and we’re quick to relent, with a lotus base, cream cheese, and New York-style strawberry-raspberry jam proving the ideal catalyst as the dessert is by far the fastest to disappear off our plates.

SLRP Ramen, Huna, Yas Mall, Yas Island, daily 12pm to 11.30pm. @slrp.ramen

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

If you’re on Yas Island, craving authentic Japanese specialities and don’t have the patience for a fine-dining style wait, SLRP is your answer.

THE SPICE IS RIGHT:

Excellence

Price: Dhs3.50

There are dozens of entry-level hot sauces on the market, but few hammer the flavour notes quite as succinctly as Excellence’s range of tongue-tinglers. Instantly identifiable by the (surely, spice-addled) eagle on the packaging, this sauce is a cupboard essential for spicy salsa sommeliers. There are habanero, garlic and jalapeno variations, but as purists, we feel the OG version is the brand’s magnum opus. Pairing suggestion: shake it all over your fries, and don’t stop till you reach the last drop.

Curious Elephant

Price: Dhs50

A collection of craft Asian sauces, that includes such smouldering hotties as Vietnamese Chilli Sauce, Chinese Chilli Oil and Malaysian Chilli Sambal, all of which were tried, tested and received full commendations from the What’s On condiment quality assurance board. The heat quotient is placed a rung or two below profundity-of-flavour on the Curious Elephant priority ladder, and that makes it the perfect salve for giving your hob top sauces an extradimensional bang. Pairing suggestion: as comfortable on your grilled prawns as it is on your salad.

Mama J’s Hot Pepper Sauce

Price: Dhs6.30

Found at the business end of Abu Dhabi, West to West Kitchen’s core mission is all about the party on your palate. They serve up an authentic mix of West African and West Indian (Caribbean) food (hence the name) but, there’s also a secret side quest that is well worth exploring. Mama J’s Hot Pepper Sauce is a volcanic flow of flavour burning a neat little hole into the condiments section of the menu. Conceived by W2W matriarchs Mama J and Aunty Lina, the sauce capitalises on Caribbean culinary staple, the scotch bonnet pepper, a hot but deeply flavourful chilli variety. There’s heat, there’s sweet, and there’s a whole lot of tang, up in this thang.

There’s a regal air around this fermented chilli paste. So much so, we can almost feel it judging us on what food vector choices we make for it. “Oh” it seems to say “smashed avo toast again is it?” Peasantries aside, the rich fermented embers of the sauce rumble across the palate with broad umami swagger. Themes of salt, sour and warmth maintain throughout. This is posh hot sauce, but it’s got a delicious streak of feral in it too.

Pairing suggestion: get it on some freshly barbecued chicken drumsticks. Or air-fried if you simply must.

Camp’s Kitchen

Price: Dhs40

This fragrantly-scented, beautifullypresented, brand of six fermented hot sauces really runs the full heat level gamut. At one end you’ve got the mild, meek, rural and sleek – Smoke & Earth and at the other, you have the Black Reaper. As in the Grim Reaper – the literal embodiment of death – it’s made using one of the hottest chillis on earth, the Carolina Reaper (along with black cherry), and yet somehow manages eloquence and poise. Heatseekers can also get involved with a reaper-sriracha crossover. We’re huge supporters of their commitment to ensuring their batches are low-sugar, low-sodium and low-carb. Pairing suggestion: slap the Reap’racha over some prawn gyoza.

6 UNMISSABLE MOVIES

TO LOOK FORWARD TO IN OCTOBER

Our pick of What’s On at the flicks...

Foe

Expected: October 6

Kraven the Hunter

Expected: October 5

The sixth film in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (SSU) features super, eh let’s call him a hero, Sergei Kravinoff AKA Kraven the Hunter. And because of Sony and Marvel’s collaborative handshake, the character should be seen as canon in the MCU multiverse. Kraven (played here by Aaron ‘Bullet Train’ Taylor-Johnson) had been on paper to appear as a bit-player in several previous Marvel projects only to be scribbled out, which makes the decision to place him in a stand-alone, Sonyproduced, R-rated movie, a bit of a gamble. Especially with the memories of the Morbin’ Time debacle still fresh in fans’ minds. We’re optimistic though, with the rare-miss component of Russell Crowe playing Sergei’s estranged mob boss father; the juicy prospect of John Wick levels of dispatchery; a Taylor-Johnson portrayed protagonist hopped up on magical lion blood who uses “his connection with animals to track his prey”; and the prospect of another outing for popular Spidey nemesis, The Rhino.

The latest in an unsurprisingly turbulent torrent of AI-driven narratives to arrive in 2023. This wasn’t written by ChatGPT though, it’s from the pen of the brilliant Canadian author Iain Reid, and directed by Garth ‘Lion’ Davis. It’s got a bijoux but beaucoup-talented cast spearheaded by Saoirse Ronan, Paul Mescal and Aaron Pierre. There’s very little in the data dump of pre-release details, but scanning the chapters of the book it’s based on (which we implore you not to do for risk of massive grammatical spoilers) allows us to tell you that it involves the story of a very happy couple. That, of course, is not the best set-up for a gripping screenplay, so luckily for us (less so for them) an agitator muscles in and tells the male lead, Junior (Mescal) that he’s being shipped off to space for a special assignment. In his stead, an almost exact biomechanical replica will be left to comfort his wife. Imagine his delight.

57 Seconds

Expected: October 12

We suspect this one might attract low IMDB and Rotten Tomato scores, but the premise sounds fun so it made the cut. It’s a sci-fi caper that sees tech journalist, Franklin Fausti (Josh ‘Hunger Games’ Hutcherson) bag the interview of a lifetime – Anton Burrell (Morgan Freeman) an eccentric entrepreneur (expect Musk nods). After the scoop, Fausti finds a ring that enables him to travel precisely 57 seconds back in time. One ring to correct embarrassing public faux pas. He uses the time skip drip to unravel the big pharma conspiracy that lead to his sister’s death and in doing so, uncovers yet more corruption and world-emperiling foul play. It’s at this point he should probably give up journalism and try something nice and safe like being a security guard for a pizza restaurant.

Five Nights at Freddy’s

Expected: October 27

Based on the jump scare-riddled video game of the same name, and scourge of parent-school WhatsApp groups, Five Nights at Freddy’s gives us manmade horrors beyond our collective comprehension. Sweet. It also gives another outing to comicscare-tzar Matthew ‘I’ll be right baaaack’ Lillard, so swings and roundabouts. In Five Nights, Mike Schmidt (Josh ‘seems like we were talking about him 57 Seconds ago’ Hutcherson, ) is drafted in to guard a derelict diner, Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza, from vandalism and theft. The chief USP of the restaurant in its heyday was the gang of animatronic mascots that performed song and dance numbers from the up-curve of the ‘uncanny valley’ (Google it). If you’ve already assumed that these suspiciously creepy razzle dazzle robots are possessed by the spirits of murdered children, who go on gory killing sprees after midnight, congratulations you’ve officially completed the horror genre. And should probably be urged to sign some sort of register.

Killers Of The Flower Moon

Expected: October 19

A Martin Scorsese-directed epic western, based on a true story, starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Robert De Niro, Brendan Fraser and Lily Gladstone. That’s genuinely enough to get anyone even remotely bothered about cinema into theatres and ill-patiently chewing through a box of popcorn, but there’s more. The movie is built on the golden screen principle of avenged justice. Seeking out those complicit in a series of targeted murders in the native American Osage community in the 1920s. A people whose land sat on an almost incalculable wealth of oil. It’s a tale of changing winds, of blood, creed and greed, and of the incidental foundations of the FBI. You might as well start inscribing the Oscars now.

The Killer

Expected: October 27

Director David Fincher absolutely loves a good psychological thriller story with twisted killers and gnarled detectives — his body count includes Se7en, Gone Girl, Zodiac, Fight Club, The Game, and The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo. Like many of his other films, his latest effort, The Killer is based on an established literary classic — in this case a French graphic novel of the same name. It stars Michael Fassbender in the lead role alongside the metamorphic Tilda Swinton, we know the subject matter deals with an assassin whose mental state is starting to show cracks, he wants out but is bonded to his role by some sticky bad blood. We’ve got some predictions about how this will fair in the office of box. But we strongly advise you not to look in the box.

Beirut BEYOND

Lebanon’s capital may be king when it comes to gourmet dining and nightlife. But there’s much more to the country than its biggest city. Here’s our case for going beyond Beirut

Lebanon’s tourism industry has suffered more than most in recent years, with the pandemic, economic instability and the heartbreaking Beirut explosion in 2020 all impacting visitor numbers. But this summer, glimmers of hope and optimism are beginning to shine through. Beirut’s creative scene is slowly returning to its feet, as are its restaurants and bars. But beyond Beirut, Lebanon’s breathtaking mountains, picturesque villages and postcard-perfect seaside towns offer an appeal that’s often overlooked. Here’s why they need to be high on your Lebanon travel itinerary.

Byblos

The beauty of Byblos stretches from its sun-drenched seafront to the historic ancient ruins that give a glimpse into the former life of one of the world’s oldest continuously inhabited towns. Located just under an hour north of Beirut, this UNESCO-listed town is packed with old world charm. Its history is a huge part of its present, so start with a stroll around the well-maintained archeological sites, such as the 12th Century Byblos Castle, which is surrounded by ruins from the Phoenician and Roman eras. The beautiful harbour is another stunning spot to soak up a breezy Mediterranean feel, and the port is dotted with pretty sundowner spots like Le Blanc Bleu (@leblancbleu.lb) and Kina (@kina_handcraftedbar).

Baalbek

Away from the coast in northeast Lebanon, Baalbek’s defining feature is undoubtedly the Baalbek Temple. The largest Roman temple to have ever been built, the impressive ruins still feature shadows of six of the original columns of the Temple of Jupiter, thought to have been built between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD. Remains of the Temple of Mercury and the Temple of Bacchus from the same era are also present at the same UNESCO World Heritage Site. To make the most of your visit, book a guided tour with a local company like Zingy Ride Tours (@zingyride) who offer four-hour guided tours plus hotel pickup and drop off from Dhs450.

Chouf Chouf

Leafy green Chouf is particularly picturesque in autumn, and if you’re craving fresh air and verdant nature, Chouf is where to head. The Chouf Biosphere Reserve is Lebanon’s largest reserve, filled with lush Cedar forests that invite hikers, bird watchers and mountain climbers to enjoy the locale. Baakline is another beautiful spot in Chouf to visit if natural beauty is high on your travel bucket list, with its leafy trees surrounding sparkling blue waterfalls and lakes. Many of these are peppered with rustic restaurants, like Shallalat Al Zarka (@shallalat_al_zarka), a gorgeous Lebanese restaurant perched on the edge of the Baakline river, which even has a special ‘love boat’ table for guests to dine on a romantic table for two on the water.

Batroun

Faraya

Best known for being the home of Lebanon’s popular Mzaar Kfardebian ski resort, visitors flock to this mountain resort from late December until February for wintersports when a fresh layer of snow blankets the craggy mountain peaks. But the epic scenery at 1,650 metres above sea level can be enjoyed year-round. Hiking is still a popular pursuit for visitors in the autumn, with waterfalls and statues to admire along the way. For cocktails with a view, Sapa Faraya (@sapabeirut) is a Peruvian restaurant and bar set within a grand castle on the cliff. An iconic spot for sundowners that turn into epic DJ sets that go until the early hours, be sure to party hard at Odin (@odin_mzaar).

Broumana

A town treasured by locals and tourists alike, Batroun has the old world charms of Byblos, but feels a little livelier. It’s the kind of seaside town that rewards getting lost in its quaint streets that seem plucked from a postcard. It’s just 16km further up the coast from Byblos, so similar remnants of the area’s Phoenician roots remain. You’ll find plenty of beach bars perched prettily on the waterfront, but don’t miss the trip in-land to visit the many wineries dotted throughout mountains. The vineyards are known for producing grapes that are vibrant in colour and flavour. The family-run Batroun Mountains Winery (@batrounmountainswinery) welcomes visitors for tours and tastings, as does Aurora Winery and Vineyards (@aurorawinery).

While it might be just 15 minutes outside of Beirut, Broumana feels like worlds away from the bustle of the city. This lovely town is as charming as it is beautiful, and overlooks the capital from its hillside perch. Known as the ‘City of Flowers,’ thanks to the colourful arrays that adorn the traditional houses, there are plenty of scenic walks and lots of leafy green cafés and bars to relax at while drinking in the views. Try On The Rocks (@on_the_rocks_lb) for chilled vibes and Lebanese fare, or the collection of restaurants at Domaine De Mar Chaaya (@domainedemarchaaya). You can even go glamping at Pineville (@pinevillelebanon) where you can cosy up in your own private cabin, with on-site facilities including a sauna and jacuzzi.

A

OF MANY COLOURS...

Uncovering the saphire charms of France’s Côte d’Azur

WHATSON.AE | OCTOBER 2023 61

Ispent most of my early twenties flipflopping around the coastal towns of mainland France. I learned the language, fell in love with its sultry, mopey, poetic soul, and ate such a gluttonous quantity of cheese that I’m still trying to shed the surplus fromage kilos two decades on. But during that time, and in all the years hence, there’s an area I’d left scandalously unexplored... the Côte d’Azur. That south-eastern extremity of the tricolore nation, cosied up to Alpine foothills, calm Mediterranean waters, and towns of such galvanised glamour and timeless elan – they’ve been beset with the jet set and Hollywood’s glitterati for the best part of a century. So this summer I returned with family in tow, a rusty French vocabulary, an imaginary choir of accordions firing up the first few bars of Champs-Élysées, and an unquenchable thirst for tapenade.

BEFORE YOU GO

In the trip-planning phase, you’ll need to choose a base of operation. Will it be Nice? If you’re flying in, or taking the train you’ll likely emerge here, and although Nice is perfectly *don’t say it, don’t say it* agreeable, we’d recommend skipping ahead slightly further onto Cannes. There’s a bus (around Dhs80) that takes you straight from Nice airport into the couer de Cannes, which has better coastal train links, a more densely packed bistro community, far more pleasant beaches and the world’s most standing ovationy film festival.

This locale also provides a canny springboard for reaching such day-tripping destinations as SaintTropez and its glitzy beach clubs; jazz bar-sprinkled Antibes with its walled fort; medieval Menton’s musées and Basilique; and of course F1-track-sporting, casino royale-ing Monaco.

Where to stay

There’s a French saying that goes “chacun voit midi à sa porte.” The literal translation is ‘everybody sees midday at their own door’. We all see the world differently, we have our own priorities, and according to what yours are, we have two different French Riviera door options for you...

Citadines Apart’hotel Croisette Cannes

Hôtel Barrière Le Majestic

Adorned in art deco grandeur and flaunty Français finery, this well-located luxury bolt hole is all about the Instaglam – it sits right on the seafront, has a Le Fouquet’s restaurant and Champagne bar, a spa, retro cinema, a La Plage beach club and the walls are festooned with monochrome portraits from the golden age of motion pictures. Prices for a night stay start at around Dhs900 off-peak. @hotelbarrierelemajestic

If you’re looking for a door that’s more affordable and just “somewhere to lay your head” this Citadines site makes a sensible call. The staff are friendly, it’s supermarché adjacent and just a short walk into the heaving hub of Cannes. Prices start at around Dhs330 per night, which makes it perfect for the budgetconscious traveller.

WHERE TO PLAY

This stretch of the French coastline was one of the original incubators for the ‘More Beach Clubs’ movement. Something we know all about in the UAE, so if you like your vacations with a bit of familiar flavour, the Riviera provides in abundance. St. Tropez’s Nikki Beach (@nikkibeachsainttropez) should be on your radar for its impeccable global consistency on white-walled luxury. It’s worth noting though that whilst the restaurant is happy to seat families, the beat-bathed beach club is adults only. Just down the road, you’ll find Gigi Ramatuelle (@gigi_restaurant) – a version of which is headed to La Mer redevelopment, J1 Beach. And Gigi is more than happy to host the kiddies. They have a dedicated ‘Circus’ play area (accepting unaccompanied minors five years and up), meaning parents can soak up the pine-shaded boho-inspired pool and restaurant vibes in uninterrupted peace.

As charming as parasols and papillotes are, those choosing to navigate deeper into the grains of the Côte d’Azur can find more exotic treasures. If you’ve got a taste for exploration, you can catch the ferry to Île Sainte-Marguerite (for less than Dhs80), a former island prison (and the incarceration place of the Man in the Iron Mask) that’s scrubbed up pretty nicely since its sentence ended. Just over an hour’s train ride away from Cannes, is the handsome Monte-Carlo found in the wafer-slither principality of Monaco. Check out the famous Casino, walk the winding red and white lines of the F1 track, and visit the harbour, Prince’s Palace or the exhibitions that take place in the province’s many galleries.

Where to dine

We’re not foolish enough to wade into the ‘which country has the best food’ debate here. There are too many kitchen knives in close proximity to stakeholders for that to ever feel like a good idea. But we will say that France, mother of sauces, queen of cheese, perfector of patisserie and dean of doing duck confit, has to be in the final, non? And as you’d expect from such a proud culinary enclave, the range of local and international dining experiences is *chef’s kiss* tres bien. Part of the joy in exploring the various Côte d’ Azure quartiers is seeking out hidden gem bistros (which is made easier, though significantly less of a sport, by doing some research in advance). The usual rules apply, the closer to the seafront, the more pricy your Steak frites and rarely is that ever indicative of a hike in quality. Instead, explore the chequered table cloths up shaded side streets. Here you’ll find more fire in the kitchen, attractive menu du jours and staff that are less frazzled by the chaotic whims of us tourists. The top pick from our trip was Cannes’ Bistrot de Grand Mère, which serves up no-fuss Provencal specialities with as close to warm hospitality as you’re likely to find in France. Abu Dhabi-born Saddle has recently opened a café here if you want to support local. But for a big Gallic blowout, it has to be La Vague d’Or (@lavaguedor). A Three Michelin Star masterpiece run by chef Arnaud Donckele, you can enjoy the pan-Mediterranean set-menu for Dhs1,210.

Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai

THE LOCATION

Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai is in good company on the beachfront of Jumeirah 1. From the seafront, guests can see the stylish Bulgari Resort a short distance away, while the Four Seasons Resort is just beyond that. The property offers the best of both worlds when it comes to a beach or city stay. You get the postcardworthy vistas of the Downtown skyline, and a stretch of Arabian Gulf-lapped gold sand.

THE LOOK AND FEEL

The hotel is undeniably glamorous, but without being gaudy. It begins in the lobby, where Canopy of Light, one of the many dazzling design touches by interior designer Jeffrey Wilkes, sees 14 bronze metal trees guide guests down from the door, through the contemporary lobby to the refined Noor Lounge. That subtle yet striking aesthetic continues through the whole hotel: contemporary colours, expensive woods, big windows lighting true, modern luxury.

THE ROOMS

Our one bedroom suite is a lesson in luxe. Guests enter into a long living area, complete with dining table, seating area, and a balcony that presides over the perfectly manicured pool area. To the left,

a walk-in wardrobe leads through to the shimmering bathroom, marble and gold accents making even the most functional space feel fabulous. In the bedroom, the same refined luxury reigns supreme in a space that’s instantly relaxing.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Where many Dubai hotels favour ‘the more the merrier’ approach to the number of restaurants, Mandarin Oriental Jumeira, Dubai focuses its energy onto two signature restaurants. At Tasca, housed on the hotel rooftop, the flavours of Portugal masterminded by chef Jose Avillez are in the spotlight. The cosy restaurant is uplifted by an impossibly turquoise infinity pool, and a menu that gives authentic Portuguese cuisine a Dubai edge.

The other standout culinary experience is Japanese steakhouse Netsu. We dine here for Saturday brunch, allowing us to enjoy the best bits of chef Ross Shonhan’s culinary creations, many of which come with a signature smoky aroma thanks to the unique Warayaki grill. Pair rounds of beef gyozas and tuna tataki with a Japanese margarita and melon cosmopolitan. For

THE FACILITIES

The hotel’s dual beach and city offering ensures all travellers are catered to, whether travelling for business or leisure, keeping active or blissing out. The inviting splitlevel swimming pool, enveloped by lush gardens, is flanked by relaxing loungers and cabanas, where guests retreat to soak up the sun. There’s more relaxing to be had down on the beach, where loungers dotted along the sand offer direct access to the sea. A fitness centre and pampering spa complete the leisure line-up. But the hotel’s close location to the city ensures those chasing adventure are only 10 minutes from all the action.

ROOM RATES

A one-night stay for two in a superior room starts from Dhs2,100 for the room only, or Dhs2,350 inclusive of breakfast.

VERDICT

Where this hotel sets itself apart from the competition is the service, which from start to finish is standout. Whether it’s the breakfast team at The Bay whipping up a special smoothie, or the housekeeping assistants switching the pillows in accordance with how you left things the day before, the team know that they’re an extension of the brand, and they take that incredibly seriously.
