A big hitter in Dubai, but can it deliver in Abu Dhabi?

Asia Asia’s Spice Route brunch has been a popular choice for many a Dubai resident, solidifying itself as the ultimate party brunch thanks to its stellar views, a winning menu and a vibrant atmosphere – but can the Abu Dhabi branch match up to this level? In a quest to find out, we ventured over to Yas Bay on a Saturday afternoon at the fairly unique time of 2pm. The later start is appreciated, whether you’ve had a big night prior or just a busy morning, rushing to brunch for noon can sometimes be inconvenient.

It’s summer, so the venue can definitely be forgiven for not managing to fill the space. However perhaps seating the few tables that are present around the DJ booth would have helped to enhance the atmosphere. A party brunch this is not, and despite the excellent selection of tunes, the decibels are too low to really build a vibe. Turning to the menu we get started with Asia Asia’s selection of signature dishes. Kicking off with sushi, we’re presented with a plate of maki, sashimi and nigiri, along with salmon carpaccio, beef tartare and tuna ceviche. The restaurant’s famous dim sum also arrives; every item offers one piece each, but you can reorder your favourites if you wish. When it comes to mains, guests can choose from a large selection of dishes, from miso black cod to wagyu striploin, robata duck breast and Thai red curry. A selection of Asian side dishes such as fried rice, broccolini and udon noodles can also be added.

In lieu of the party atmosphere, we relax into our booth and make our way through the dishes. Highlights include the salmon carpaccio, served in a refreshing mango sauce; the sweet potato dim sum which oozes creamy, flavourful goodness; and the prime tenderloin steak served alongside a punchy shitake sauce. Feeling full, we complete the meal with chocolate matcha marquise. Despite not being able to taste any matcha, the soft moussey texture was a welcome ending to a big meal.

The cocktail menu features crowdpleasers such as Aperol spritz, sangria rosé, watermelon martini and Asian negroni. Alternatively, spirits, wine and beer are also included in the house package. But, for a decent lunch with your fill of cocktails, Asia Asia Yas Bay doesn’t disappoint.
