Born to run

The Bridge lifestyle hub launches running programmes for beginners

To non-runners, picking up a jogging habit can seem incredibly daunting. But the benefits of running – improved mood, stronger muscles and a sharper mind – far outweigh the cons (shortness of breath and the odd bout of chafing).

So, if you’re thinking about taking up running, Jonothan Dietz, PT and group class coach at The Bridge Lifestyle Hub is on the starting block ready to help. He’s leading the new Train to Run programme designed to help beginners reach their goals as a runner, with a range of drills, sprints and agility work to help set you on the right track. Sessions cost just Dhs60 and take place every Tuesday at 6pm, including a recovery breathwork session, organic booster shot and a 15 per cent discount on food in The Bridge’s healthy café. The Bridge, Al Qana, Abu Dhabi, Tue 6pm, Dhs60 (free for members). Tel: (0)2 616 4555. @thebridgehub

MEET THE TRAINER Jonothan Dietz

Can you introduce yourself?

I’m a certified personal trainer and group class coach at The Bridge Lifestyle Hub. I’m very passionate about leading a healthy, balanced lifestyle and following a good training regimen that involves all types of training from weightlifting, strength training, to running and cardio.

How long have you been running for?

Just over eight years. I started running when I was 14 years old and it quickly became a part of my everyday life.

What do you enjoy most about running?

The space and zone your mind goes into. It’s very therapeutic. I would also say the challenge that comes with it, because each time you run you can push a little harder to hit your desired goal.

What happens during a Train to Run session?

In each session, we focus on speed, stamina, agility, balance, strength and endurance. With a combination of all these points, a runner can see great improvements in their running performance.

What’s the ultimate aim of the Train to Run sessions?

The aim is to improve individuals’ running capabilities but at the same time create a community of runners that come together to train, compete and most importantly enjoy the journey of it all.

And it’s ok to be a complete beginner?

Absolutely. Our aim is to help every person that joins a session. They will improve no matter what level they’re at to begin with. For example, if there is a specific move that’s out of reach, we can tailor it by giving other options that are just as effective. It’s designed to teach everyone the skills needed to be a great runner.

Are there are races that you recommend signing up for in Abu Dhabi?

I’m new to Abu Dhabi, but I’ve heard about so many great runs that happen in the city. The ADNOC Abu Dhabi marathon in December would be a great place to start with optional courses from 5km, 10km to the full 42km.
