MY CABIN FEVER OFTEN SETS IN RIGHT ABOUT NOW

We’re well into the summer months, but those cooler climes still feel like a distant dream. I’m enviously watching Instagram stories of friends enjoying holidays on the sun-soaked Mediterranean coast, or reuniting with family in pub gardens in the UK, while firmly rooted to my living room sofa with the temperature kept firmly at 20 Degrees.

I’ve said before that I’d take a UAE summer over a UK winter any day, and I stand by that. But as we hit the height of summer, after several weeks in the high forties, I wouldn’t be opposed to a furnace-escaping getaway right about now.

But the next best thing for those of us staying in the city this summer is experiences that offer mental travel. After a few years of being permanently grounded, this is one I’ve got down to a fine art. And I’m sure many of you have, too. Using the power of imagination, and with a little help from Abu Dhabi’s culinary masters, this issue is an invitation to travel the world without leaving the city. We’re jetting across the globe, from the quaint pizzerias that line Italy’s cobbled streets, to the fragrant restaurants dotted across India, in some of Abu Dhabi’s best dishes. No passport required.

But we know that the summer is a time that many of us are feeling the pinch, so all of these dishes will set you back Dhs50 or less. Far more wallet-friendly than that Skyscanner flight you’ve been eyeing up. Start your globe-trotting with us from p15.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Returning to a favourite spot for a new summer brunch… Cè La Vi

Cè La Vi is the kind of spot I return to time and again. And new for the summer – book the indoor brunch ASAP. The menu is another great array of cocktails and chef Howard Ko’s pan-Asian mastery. The vibes are kept on point all afternoon with dance-inducing tunes, magic tricks and a live sax. @celavidubai

Heading all the way to the capital for a meal at… Somewhere

I took a friend along with me to dine at Instagrammable Somewhere

Cafe in Abu Dhabi Marina Mall and we still can’t stop talking about the shrimp kunafa, the shawarma bao and ceralac umm ali. If you’re ever in the capital or if you’re in Dubai and have about six hours to kill, consider Somewhere in Abu Dhabi. This specific Somewhere.

Delighting in a slice of France at the stunning… Odeon

Located on Jumeirah Beach Road, Odeon is a legit hidden gem. On the ground floor there’s a market selling fresh French produce. Wander up the stairs and there’s a fine dining restaurant and I cannot recommend the comte ravioli strongly enough. All I can say is j’taime trop Odeon.

Fuelling my growing K-pop obsession through… bingeing Going Seventeen

Most days after work, I’m way too tired to be scrolling through Netflix for a television series to watch. I recently started watching Korean variety show Going Seventeen, featuring one of my favourite bands (Seventeen) doing the most random things for pure entertainment. Who knew watching grown men chase each other in go-karts could bring so much joy? youtube.com

Keeping the kids active over the summer holidays with… Maison Tini

Taking place at Goshi Warehouse 34, in Al Quoz – Maison Tini is hosting a summer camp for kids. It’s affordable (Dhs75 per day), offers a range of fun activities, and expends some of that **screams in snot and sugar** energy. It’s open Mon to Fri, for ages two to six. maisontini.com

Revisiting a Scorsese classic... Taxi Driver (1976)

I’ve watched this Scorsese classic several times over the years, and De Niro’s timeless performance as a depressed 26-year-old cabbie in New York City, trying to find meaning in life, is one to savour. Watch out for Wizard’s words of advice and a memorable performance by Jodie Foster. Watch it on Netflix

– Dinesh Ramanathan, Deputy Editor, What’s On Abu Dhabi

Beating the holiday blues with the summery menu at… Flamingo Room

My top pick for a girlie lunch with a slice of holiday vibes is Jumeirah Al Naseem’s Flamingo Room. Light, flavour-packed summery dishes are complemented by a pretty blush pink colour palette combined with pops of punchy zebra print. One for your Dubai summer to-dine lists.

@flamingoroomae

Feeding myself and my English language complex with... Wordle

Every single lunch break I have to play Wordle. I say ‘have to’ and not ‘want to’ because it’s become validation at this point. Fork in hand, I stare at the white grid of little boxes wondering how I’ve seemingly forgotten all five-letter words in the English language, mentally asking it to ‘cash me outside’. All worth it for those golden Eureka moments though. wordlegame.org

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Helen Farmer

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, from their favourite places to hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Helen Farmer (@_helenfarmer_), broadcast journalist on Dubai Eye 103.8FM and expert on family life in Dubai. Here she shares some of her favourite spots that you need on your radar.

I love visiting new openings and we live in an area with some great restaurants like 21grams, Lila Taqueria, Monno and Orfali Bros. For a celebration, it’s Josette or BB Social Dining and for pizza it has to be Blu by the water, or Pitfire.

@21grams.dubai, @lilataqueria, @monnodubai, @orfalibros_ bistro, @bbdifc, @josettedubai, @blupizzeria, @pitfirepizzadubai

There’s a stretch of sand called Sunrise Beach, close to the Four Seasons in Jumeira, that’s a real hidden gem. As the name suggests, it’s great in the morning: the water is calm and we’ve found hundreds of sand dollars. Take a breakfast picnic and make the most of the morning.

Most weekends you’ll find us sailing at Dubai Offshore Sailing Club, and the kids love rock climbing at Adventure Zone. When the weather is kind, you can’t beat the beach or a pool day at one of the Privilee pools. @doscuae

Pack up the car and take a road trip to Oman. We recently spent a few days at Jumeirah Muscat Bay, explored the souk, and snorkeled with turtles. In the cooler months you can swim with whale sharks, so we’ll be back for that.

@jumeirahmuscatbay

Frequent visitors to Hatta, we recently spent a weekend in the Damani Lodges, where you can barbecue, enjoy views, and have an action-packed day at Wadi Hub (axe throwing optional, water slides essential). It’s also great for hiking, and kayaking.

@visit.hatta

You can’t beat the massages in Sensasia Urban Spa, but for real relaxation, I love waking up above the clouds in Fujairah’s mountains. I’d share the exact location but my husband would never forgive me. @sensasia_spas

AROUND THE WORLD IN DISHES UNDER DHS50 WHATSON.AE | AUGUST 2023 15

Restaurant: José by Pizzaro

Dish: Croquetas de pollo rustido y allioli de ajo asado

Price: Dhs45

A regional first from culinary superstar José Pizzaro, this bijoux tapas bar and restaurant is passionate about showcasing a somewhat underrepresented cuisine in the capital, Spanish. With just 46 seats, it’s an intimate space, but packed with personality thanks to monochrome family photos and clashing prints. Dishes are tapas-style sharing plates, which is reflected in the impressive pricing, so there are several dishes on this menu that firmly sit under the Dhs50 mark. Our pick are the perfect parcels of piping hot chicken croquettes, served alongside a creamy roasted garlic aioli they simply must be dunked in.

Jose by Pizzaro, Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, Corniche, Tues to Sun 5pm to 11.30pm. Tel: (0)2 811 5666. @josebypizzaro

CHINA

Restaurant: Din Tai Fung

Dish: Kung pao chicken

Price: Dhs44

This one is a must-visit spot for dim-sum lovers, and Chinese food enthusiasts in general. There are branches across the UAE, but you’ll want to arrive early (and hungry) to The Galleria on Al Maryah to get your fix in Abu Dhabi. The menu is filled with plenty of budget options, including steamed soup dumplings and lip-smacking wontons. Where this restaurant really impresses for those that are budget conscious, is with its trio of main dishes all under Dhs50. Among them, the kung pao chicken is a great place to start. With its origins in the southwestern Sichuan region, each bite of tender chicken is coated in spicy, peanut-infused stir fry.

Din Tai Fung, The Galleria, Abu Dhabi, 11am to 10.30pm daily. Tel: (0)2 446 7273. @dintaifungae

SPAIN

Restaurant: Zeera by Buddha Bar

Dish: Watermelon palak patta chaat

Price: Dhs50

A staple on the Yas Bay dining scene, Zeera by Buddha Bar is one of three excellent restaurants that make up Trilogy by Buddha Bar. It’s a modern interpretation of Indian dining, both in terms of style and cuisine, and pairs a soundtrack of exceptional flavours with wonderful Pier 71 views. In a restaurant adorned in regal shades of gold and ruby, guests dine on a modern Indian menu that consistently hits the high notes. Its setting and upscale offering mean you won’t find much in the Dhs50 and below bracket, but several flavourful chaats fit the bill. Order the watermelon palak patta chaat for a flavour explosion of sweet and spice salad, crispy spinach and fresh watermelon.

Zeera by Buddha Bar, Pier71, Yas Bay Waterfront, Yas Island, daily 1pm to 2am. Tel: (0)50 601 1193. thetrilogybybuddhabar.com

UZBEKISTAN

Restaurant: Mercury Cafeteria

Dish: Uzbek plov with salad

Price: Dhs38

JAPAN

Restaurant: Otoro

Dish: Chicken wing kushiyaki

Price: Dhs42

While we are specifically enthusiastic about the kushiyaki at Otoro, this spot is a real saver’s delight, serving up wallet-friendly dishes without the need to compromise on quality. There’s no messing about as you kick your evening off with a sushi selection that boasts a total of 15 nigiri and maki rolls, including three salmon-centred bites under Dhs50. If you plan to arrive with a bigger appetite, however, Indomie (Dhs42), is a veal chorizo main course that will satiate your desire for Japanese flavours without testing the depths of your pocket. And to round things off, go for the green tea tiramisu (Dhs48) with azuki beans. With its exceptional plates and excellent service, we’re sure you will be saying ‘Itadakimasu’ before you can reach for your chopsticks. Otoro, Al Maqta’ St, Rabdan, Al Qana, 12pm to 11pm daily Tel: (0)2 886 9995. @otoro.ad

Rice, meats and veggies simmer in this quintessential Uzbek delight. You know a restaurant needs to be on your radar when it’s frequented by those that know the food, and regulars of the no-frills Mercury can attest to it being a hidden gem on the Eastern European dining scene. The restaurant has a cute, cozy interior with hues of peach, pink and white, making it feel welcoming and authentic. On the menu, expect an impressive variety of salads, traditional soups like shorva, okroshka and mastava, and even elaborate mains like lagman and rolled kebabs that are well under our Dhs50 ceiling. For authentic Uzbek flavours, order the Uzbek plov with salad. Often considered Uzbekistan’s national dish, this dish is prepared with long-grain rice, lamb chunks and veggies in a single pot and is a well-known feature at Uzbek celebrations.

Mercury Cafeteria, beside Russian Embassy, Al Danah, Abu Dhabi. 9.30am to 11.30pm daily. Tel: (0)2 676 7834. @uzmercury.rest

Stouff Beirut, a LebaneseMediterranean open-fire kitchen on Level 4 of the WTC Mall, is all business when it comes to serving authentic Lebanese food, a palate this region is oh-so-familiar with. Stouff Beirut puts out an inspired selection of dishes that extend from Lebanon to the Mediterranean, and there’s a strong focus on charcoal-fired dishes that are cooked right in front of you in the expansive kitchen. The setting is just as authentic, with bright colours, vibrant tiles and verdant plants creating an inviting setting. One dish you won’t want to miss is their smoked eggplant moutabbal with pureed beetroot, a superfood in its own right. With a generous blend of yoghurt and tahini, this is the ideal summer delight for you and your crew.

Restaurant: Coya

Dish: Wild mushroom ceviche

Price: Dhs50

Restaurants in Abu Dhabi don’t come much swankier than Coya, but even at this elegant Peruvian eatery at Four Seasons Abu Dhabi, we’ve managed to find a dish that will fit in the Dhs50 budget. An internationally renowned restaurant inspired by vibrant Latin American culture, the focus is on serving up memorable and inventive flavours that caters to the senses beyond just taste. You can enjoy a famed Peruvian appetiser, the wild mushroom ceviche: a medley of crispy enoki mushrooms, shallots and jumbo corn – as well as the portobello mushroom skewers and the cucumber and apple salad – for under Dhs50 and still get an unforgettable taste of Peru. JAMAICA

Restaurant: West to West Kitchen

Dish: Curry goat wrap

Price: Dhs42

A cuisine that is enjoyed in many regions of the world, and that’s gained popularity with classics like jerk chicken and sweet plantain, we know from experience that Jamaican food rarely disappoints. And West to West Kitchen on Salam Street’s great reviews for its authentic Caribbean and Sierra Leonean cuisine add more proof to the claim. All sections of the menu are pleasantly peppered with affordable offerings, although we encourage you all to order the curry goat wrap, conveniently priced at well below the Dhs50 mark. This Caribbean classic is marinated and slowcooked to melt-in-the-mouth perfection, with the signature Jamaican seasoning providing a lasting kick.

West to West Kitchen, Salam Street, Abu Dhabi, 12pm to 10pm Tues to Sun. Tel: (0)2 671 9119. @westtowestkitchen

FRANCE

Restaurant: La Serre

Dish: Soupe à l’oignon

Price: Dhs49

Dubai-born La Serre is an oh-so-chic iteration of Parisienne dining. In Abu Dhabi, it’s located in Yas Mall, where guests are invited to dine, weather permitting, either on the beautiful alfresco terrace that centres around an ornate water feature, or inside a pretty restaurant, where sparkling chandeliers, ruby red furnishings and monochrome photographs add to the authentic French feel. There are plenty of homemade pastries and breads, all neatly displayed in a glass cabinet, that fall under the Dhs50 mark, which diners can either enjoy by dining in or picking up to go. But if you’re after a more extensive dining experience, you’ll want to kick things of with a dish the French are famed for in the way they are escargot or coq au vin: the French onion soup. La Serre, Yas Mall, Yas Island, 8am to 10pm Sun to Thurs, 8am to 12am Sat and Sun. Tel: (0)2 658 5835. laserre.com

NEPAL

Restaurant: Momos by S3J

Dish: Chicken chaat momos

Price: Dhs18

Often mistaken for its Cantonese counterpart (albeit understandably), the dim sum, momos are just a tiny bit different as they’re made exclusively with wheat flour. These little steamed wonders are a classic at social gatherings as an appetiser, enjoyed in the comfort of your home as a snack, or even just the main course for those looking to enjoy great taste while hanging out, coming in vegetarian, chicken and a slew of other variants. A portion is traditionally served as five pieces in a bamboo basket, with spicy sauce to taste. That’s exactly what you can expect at Momos by S3J, a dainty momo joint in the Al Zahiyah area that serves up over thirty different momo dishes for the hungry and the restless. While these are priced very reasonably with most under Dhs20, we must warn you, you could end up ordering a second plate. Or a third.

Momos by S3J, Tourist Club Area, Abu Dhabi, 10am to 12am daily. Tel: (0)58 851 7375. @momosbys3j

MEXICO

Restaurant: La Carnita

Dish: Smoked chorizo quesadilla

Price: Dhs45

La Carnita, which literally translates to ‘Little Meats’, is a lively Mexican spot overlooking Yas Bay’s Pier 71, headlining the emirate’s assortment of Mexican cuisine. Rolling out several traditional attractions, including nachos and Mexican street corn, they do keep the budgetconscious diner in mind and have both the smoked chorizo and achiote chicken quesadilla (both Dhs45) to help kick your appetite into gear. The smoked chorizo quesadilla is a light flour tortilla packed with a flavour flight of chorizo sausage, rich smoked cheese, punchy roast habanero, soft caramelised onions and a topping of chilli crema. Fill up at La Carnita for a memorable food fiesta, then go take a welldeserved siesta. Andale, ladies and gents.

SOUTH EAST ASIA

Restaurant: Mamafri

Dish: Hoisin crispy chicken bao

Price: Dhs46

While the cuisine at Mamafri in Sheikha Fatima Park transcends several countries, it deserves a mention for its excellent mastery of South East Asian flavours. Since opening just over a year ago, the Abu Dhabi outpost of Mamafri has hit the high notes thanks to its minimalistic, Instagramfriendly décor, and plentiful portion sizes. Order the hoisin crispy chicken bao (Dhs46), which is packed with chicken, kale and hoisin mayo. Beloved Mamafri’s bite-sized buns, a la White Castle sliders, are a must try for those that lean towards fast food chains.

ITALY

Restaurant: Antonia

Dish: Focaccia al rosmarino

Price: Dhs40

We try not to have favourites at What’s On HQ, but if we did, Antonia, perched on the pretty promenande at Mamsha Al Saadiyat, would certainly be among them. This expert iteration of a traditional Italian pizzeria is a consistent What’s On Award-winner, and the restaurant prides itself on being built out with proprietary fifty-year old sour dough, rustic Italian flour and olive oil to name a couple of their core ingredients. What really pushes your dining experience to memorable heights at this gorgeous Italian trattoria, however, is their picturesque placement, overlooking the azure waters at Mamsha Al Saadiyat. Generous glass panels allow you to enjoy natural lighting at lunchtime as you tuck into a selection of pizzas, pastas and focaccias by the sea. The simple flavours sing with the focaccia al rosmarino (Dhs40), which is simply seasoned with rock salt and olive oil.

THE BALKANS

Restaurant: Kuzina 22

Dish: Burek

Price: Dhs 38

If Balkan gastronomy is what you fancy, this is the place to be in Abu Dhabi. Airy, well-lit and spacey, Kuzina 22 is a must-visit if you plan to take a walk along the emirate’s Mina Zayed development. Their menu rolls out numerous Balkan specialities like butter-fried gnocchi, cevapi (mincemeat kebabs), goulash and our dish of focus this month, the Burek, which is priced at under Dhs50 like most of their breakfast options, including lepinja and beef prosciutto. This traditional Balkan pastry comes with a flaky dough outer and an assortment of fillings, which here include spinach and cheese and mince meat.

YOUR ESSENTIAL GUIDE TO

Abu Dhabi’s trading port Mina’s business as a cool new destination for shopping, dining and entertainment

Bring a bottle or two of water and dress coolly, or better yet, get behind the wheel. It’s going to take you the better part of a day, or more, to explore Abu Dhabi’s Mina Zayed.

A port-side development that’s been around for over four decades, Mina Zayed is the capital’s expansive hub for trade, commerce and logistics. But the vision is to transform this waterside spot into a lifestyle and entertainment destination. And it’s already well on its way. Although much of the area remains under development, parts are now beginning to emerge as fun spots for casual coffees or creative afternoons.

Begin at Souq Al Mina, where a smattering of restaurants line both sides of

the walkway, bringing both local and international fare to the public, as well as little retail shops, wellness and leisure spaces and dessert delights. The sprawling promenade is beautifully lit up after sundown, allowing us to envision how the area will look once the weather cools down. It’s sure to make for an ideal day out by the sea with mighty trading vessels providing a lovely backdrop.

For dining, prepare to queue at the now renowned pizzeria Marmellata, the product of a father-son-duo serving up some of the best pies in the city. Balkan flavours cooked with love await at the quaint Kuzina 22, while Asyak Grill presents a menu of super-sized grills designed to share in typical Middle Eastern fashion. Of course no Abu

Dhabi destination is complete without a collection of coffee shops, so enjoy a fresh brew at Instagrammable Amongst Few, slick Roof speciality coffee shop or artisanal gelateria, J.lato.

But there’s more than just dining to discover. A visit to Min’na offers the opportunity to shop a handpicked collection of textiles, jewellery and crafts, then there’s Hubel Ceramics, a ceramic studio where you can get creative with expert-led workshops, and even a wellness studio – sacral grounds – where you can find your zen with yoga, Pilates and meditation. Then there’s a lovely collection of independent boutique like APS, creators of handmade soaps and candles; Flowerina, responsible for stunning floral arrangements; and Woods, a byappointment store that creates custom home furnishings.

A 30-minute stroll down the development, an indicator of how vast the redevelopment plan is, our final destination is the fish market, a bustling seafood hub

that we’ve heard plenty about.

But before we reach it, we chance upon a plant souk. Lines of shops, over thirty that we can count within seconds, are filled with lush greenery burgeoning out of their premises and storekeepers seated outside in plastic chairs, ready to haggle. The plant souk has everything you need to keep your plants, yard or gardens in optimal shape, with fertiliser, tools, decorative and vegetative plants, grasses, pots and more on offer. We recommend visiting during before dusk to enjoy the colours in all their splendour.

Among a multitude of other developments, Mina Zayed also includes the famed fruit and vegetable market, considered one of the mainstays of Mina Zayed. This destination has some of the best selections of fruits and vegetables in the capital, with apples, onions, oranges

and other favourites ready for the picking from exporters belonging to North Africa and Asia.

We finally arrive at the Fish Market, which is the most populated spot of our tour even minutes from closing for the night. Walking in, we’re hit with the scent of fresh catch, including crabs, mussels, shari, hamour, chanad and other varieties native to the local waters. There are separate cleaning and weighing areas, with customers lined up to watch their purchase being cleaned, portioned and packaged. In addition to the seafood on sale, the fish market also stocks numerous seafood-based sauces, preserves, fish salt and marinated products to accentuate your omega-3 packed meal.

We’re certain there is a lot more to see. Our interest builds in tandem with the growing development that is Mina Zayed, a spot to explore and learn more about with the cooler time of the year only a few months away.

REVIEW: SOMEWHERE

Destination: Somewhere in Abu Dhabi...

While its original café at Dubai Mall has stylish bookstore-esque features with views of the Dubai Fountain, the newly opened Somewhere at Abu Dhabi Marina Mall presents a more Arabesque look and feel, with yellow and golden details, pastel-coloured knick-knacks and pops of green foliage.

The cafe’s concept is simple: to promote the thrill of travelling and exploring the unknown. ‘Let us take you on a journey somewhere’ is a notion that’s reflected on the menu with fusion dishes taking inspiration from travels around the globe.

Despite its newcomer status, the aesthetically pleasing venue has already drawn large crowds. There is both interior seating as well as a terrace that expands into the mall. Lunchtime is bustling as we take a seat indoors under the art-speckled dome. To begin, we quench our thirst with the Somewhere mocktail (Dhs41), which blends watermelon, with passionfruit.

A quick scan of the food menu paired with helpful tips from the staff, and our order is in. We kick off proceedings with the falafel salad (Dhs61), crispy mini bitesized patty-shaped fritters tossed in tahini sauce and greens. The creamy hummus dip, topped with tender chopped black Angus beef (Dhs47), is next, which we scoop up like ice cream with mini fluffy Kuboos, and surprise-bites of pine nuts mixed in. We turn our attention to the four-piece shrimp kunafa (Dhs55) sitting like a tall crown on our table – an Arabic, culinary play on shrimp tempura, we’re told. The crispy golden kunafa is woven almost spindle-like around the tender prawns and has a pleasing crunch that’s satisfying on the palate. There are spicy hints, which pair well with the tartar sauce and sweet pomegranate seeds. For the chicken shawarma baos (Dhs41 for two), we tilt

our heads and take our first bite, savouring the all-too-familiar garlic sauce and tender chicken with crispy sweet potato toppings. Both dishes are ones we would order again.

Lastly on our Middle Eastern culinary journey is the shrimp sayadiyah (Dhs95) - the pot rice with caramelised onions and tender spicy shrimp, cooked in fish sauce, and doused in a tomato soup-like sauce. Coming together in perfect harmony, we’re glad it was recommended by the team.

For dessert, fans of rose-flavoured treats will fall in love with the fourtiered rose ice cream sandwich (Dhs37), topped with popping candy and white candy floss. And while that might sound like enough dessert for one mealtime, don’t leave without trying the Cerelac umm ali (Dhs55), a tasty oven-baked pudding served with cereal milk. Pro tip: ask the servers to help you out, as their expertise will ensure you try all the best bits. To round off our afternoon, we pair dessert with a bitter iced Turkish coffee (Dhs33).

Somewhere, Marina Mall, Al Kasir, Abu Dhabi. Sun to Thurs 12pm to 10pm, Fri to Sat 12pm to 12am, Tel: (0)56 141 5517.

REVIEW: MARMELLATA

On a modest corner of Mina Zayed, resembling a run-of-the-mill eatery, sits Marmellata. That is until you walk in, take a whiff, and are greeted with a poster on the wall that quips, ‘perfect is boring.’

A hidden gem on Abu Dhabi, nay, the UAE’s competitive pizza circuit, Marmellata is the brainchild of father-son duo, Raj and Sebastian Dagstani, created in 2019. While they naturally had to pivot to online orders and even endure a brief closure of store operations when the pandemic came calling, it’s back to business for this duo and co.

When we head down to check out Marmellata 2.0, we can see why their name translates to ‘jam’ – because they’re easily the busiest business at Mina Zayed. The area is otherwise rather quiet, which we can attribute to the humid, energy-sapping mid-July temperatures.

When you pull the doors open to Marmellata, you feel simplicity, energy and action: think royal blue aprons and napkins, white uniforms and porcelain. The restaurant is simple but innovative, using wooden coins for advertising over regular business cards.

Owner Raj is still in the kitchen despite the restaurant’s success, and swiftly serves

us a special mixed focaccia (Dhs40). And while it’s quite the handful, every bite feels like we’re sinking specialities our teeth into a delicate cloud. Marmellata’s specialties pack unparalleled freshness and focus on local sourcing where possible, with ingredients like mushrooms grown in the local desert and figs from Liwa.

The owner isn’t kidding when he says, “Our food is New York-inspired, but AbuDhabi style.”

He continues, “pizza is often thought of as a purely Italian food. But the truth is, southern Italian food came through north Africa. It was the food of the Arabs and was cooked by Italians, so it’s more of a Mediterranean food.”

The restaurant is a beehive of activity, hosting guests at eight tables indoors and several more on the outdoor patio, perfect for the cooler months. While it originally only served single slices of pizza, operations swiftly expanded, and their menu now revolves around five

main pizzas (priced at Dhs75 each) and a selection of focaccias.

Marmellata really shines in the topping department. Our order of a large pizza and a mixed focaccia was packed with striking ones like turkey, onion, roasted peppers, fennel pollen and our personal favourite, truffle honey, which appeared in a flash amidst the smorgasbord of flavours with every bite. To keep the mercury-soaring temperatures at bay, we were served chilled glasses of house-made lemonade, which packed a welcome hint of basil (Dhs25 for a 600ml bottle).

While these are tastebud-igniting, palate-pleasing combinations that will linger with you long after you’ve said goodbye, Marmellata’s secret ingredient is crystal clear – caring, enthusiastic staff who delight in feeding their customers.

“See you soon Inshallah, brother,” Raj calls out to a beaming customer exiting the business. At the crux of it, it’s all about family here.

Marmellata, Shop 25-A, Mina Zayed, 5pm to 8.30pm, Weds to Sun.

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

PARADISO

Brunches pull no punches at Paradiso in Yas Bay

On a sweltering Sunday in Yas Bay, we’re dreaming of La Dolce Vita. But we’re not taking a detour on our way to the airport. Instead, we’re at this vibrant waterfront dining destination for the new Italian brunch at Paradiso. The six-course feast is a celebration of Italian flavours, paired with a selection of unlimited drinks.

With congenial service headlined by elaborate descriptions of our food and its preparation, we are introduced to a bread basket, presented with olive oil and a dash of balsamic vinegar to ‘open up the appetite.’ To sip on, a steaming hot cappuccino arrives as we start our sensory engines.

We are seated at wooden chairs, around a table laden with simple white linen, alongside big glass panels facing the water. Symbolic with the aquamarine vastness

Paradiso overlooks, Omani prawn olive tapenade makes its way to the table. The prawns are refreshing, cool and crispy with aromatic olive highlighting the Italian indulgence we are here to enjoy. Salty and tender, you could close your eyes as you bite into these, imagining yourself as a seafarer on the Mediterranean. Shortly after, truffle arancini with marinara sauce is served. Bite-sized spheres stuffed with truffle and short-grain arboro rice, the marinara is stellar, setting the standard for the Italian fare that swiftly follows.

Next up is the ai funghi misti, which gives mushrooms new meaning as a pizza topping. These are bigger, juicier and more fragrant than near any we’ve had before, and we are perfectly content letting them take centre stage on this pizza.

The main course, pan seared sea bass fillet with roasted baby potatoes, is an elaborately prepared, delicately decorated dish that looks almost as good as it tastes. The mild, memorable flavours and signature texture of sea bass are to savour, but we recommend pacing yourself as it can get quite filling.

For beverages to accompany brunch, we strongly recommend the saffran mule, Paradiso’s spin on the vodka-based star from Moscow. The drink is sprayed with edible perfume as you’re served, in an arrangement like no other.

Dessert arrives to conclude things sweetly and we lean forward to inhale the fragrance of the Paradiso tiramisu. There’s that smell again, coffee. Brunch has come full circle at Paradiso, and we recommend you get a table the next time you’re in Yas Bay.

Paradiso, 71 Yas Bay Waterfront Pier, Yas Island, 12pm to 4pm, Sun, Dhs250 soft, Dhs350 house, Dhs450 sparkling. Tel: (0)50 437 2869. paradisoabudhabi. com

OF THE MONTH: THE WAREHOUSE

WINE & TAPAS BAR

The capital’s own slice of a Saturday night in Lisbon

The Warehouse is the kind of spot that Abu Dhabi residents return to time and again when looking for a fun-filled, fuss-free evening. On a balmy summer Saturday soir we’re here to experience the Portuguese night. As the sun sets, we’re seated in a beautifully dim lit spot where a corner table and spacious leather chairs beckon.

The deal goes as follows: two Portuguese tapas or Petiscos, and two hours of unlimited Porto beverages all for the brilliant price of Dhs165. Our first dish is the pasteis de bacalhau, a serving of crispy cod fritters and mashed potato with parsley and red onion. These are some of the softest

fried treats we’ve tasted, and arrive as four neatly arranged ovals with a side of seedless black olives and a slice of lime for added kick. While the fritters themselves are an incredible mix of flavours with the cod hitting you late, don’t forget to ask for the Romesco sauce, a tomatobased wonder with Catalunyan origins. The Warehouse adds a hint of paprika for taste, and in seconds we’re dunking our fritters in Romesco. Comida Sabrosa, indeed.

As the evening continues, tables quickly fill up with guests enjoying a live rendition of Charlie Puth’s Attention The live music adds to the inviting atmosphere, and sets of catchy pop tunes continue into the evening.

Our second tapas dish is the sweet pasteis de nata, baked custard tartlets with a sprinkling of powdered sugar. Served in a dainty pan, the custard is warm and succulent, the ideal footnote to its saltier, fried precedent. The tapas menu is long and diverse, with up to eight different offerings, including the octopus salad and the woodpecker, beef steak bites for when your appetite is in no mood to mess about.

Our beverage to savour is the Cascas Selecao Enlogo Beira (Dhs37 sold separately), a smooth, yet dry white that goes well with our fried, dry meal and mildly spicy condiments.

The Warehouse is unique in that you can either choose to enjoy the party or be nestled privately in an intimate space designed to allow you to enjoy your evening away from the masses.

REVIEW: ADRIFT BURGER BAR

We’ve come to Yas Mall in search of big-ticket burgers

Is there such a thing as an objectively perfect burger? Golden principles to which we can all subscribe? Or will there always be subjective factions, doomed to die on their respective hills of whether, say, the smash or steakhouse variety reigns supreme?

What about the buns? The toppings? Should we mix sweet and savoury? How should they be cooked? What about the sauce...?

As part of our exhaustive efforts to report from the front line of this crucial, era-defining issue and come up with some sort of answer, we’ve come to Adrift Burger Bar in Yas Mall. It’s the first permanent UAE location of the casual dining concept from Michelin-recognised ‘Gypsy Chef’, David Myers.

Set away from the main mall food courts, and sandwiched between retail giants in the sporting district, Adrift already cuts a cool, aloof character. The

design incorporates influences from the land of Myers’ origin story, California along with flashes of international flair that represent his gastronomyled globe-trotting.

That world gaze is evident in the menu too, with components such as ‘tomato ajwan jam’ and ‘curry leaf fries’ offering exotic flavour map pins.

We order one of the signature offerings, the DM Burger (Dhs55). “Is it available in slider form?” we ask the helpful server “so we can slide into the DM”. The server looks at us kindly, “no sir, just the burger”. The bun pun, though *sighs in cringe*, did have a purpose. Sliders are a great way of exploring burger menus, allowing you to experience two or more varieties without an immediate onset of the ‘meat sweats’.

Our server also asks how we’d like the patty cooked, and “somewhere along the medium-rare side of medium” comes our confusing response. We also order what is essentially a Greek (tomato and whipped feta) salad (Dhs35) to go alongside the burger.

Plated up, the DM (named after David Myers) looks the part. A wedge of finely shredded lettuce and onion, drenched in secret sauce, sits on top of our slightly undercooked (likely the result of our abstract description) patty. There’s a layer of aged Vermont cheddar in the brioche bun too. Examining the dish as a whole, it works. There are a lot of spinning flavour plates vying for your attention but experienced simultaneously, and the art that went into its conception is clear.

It’s light and buttery, the cheddar adds nutty-tingles and there’s zero doubt that the mildly sweet brioche is the right bun for this job. The salad is great too, of course. But another reminder of our moment of madness at the point of ordering. Maybe we’ll have fries for dessert.

Adrift Burger Bar, Level 1 Yas Mall, Yas Island, Sun to Wed 10am to 10pm, Thu to Sat 10am to midnight.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Adrift offers something different and exciting to Abu Dhabi’s burger scene. Perfect? Not for us. But it is well worth casting Adrift for.

A TASTE OF TRADITION

Discover the UAE’s rich history with these heritage experiences

here’s plenty to see on the art and culture front in the capital, from beacons of art like the renowned Louvre Abu Dhabi, to the array of independent galleries that dot the city. But the emirate also has several museums and experiences that pay tribute to the UAE’s strong heritage. Each offers a fascinating insight into centuries worth of rich history, dating as far back as when the nomadic Arab tribes roamed the desert.

Here are six fun ways to discover the legacy of the UAE.

Brew an authentic Arabic coffee

Gahwa (or Arabic coffee), has been a central part of Arab culture for centuries and has a unique preparation and serving style, which has been passed down through the ages. It is considered a symbol of generosity and traditionally, prepared in front of guests. You can learn more about this strong tradition and its distinctive techniques including the roasting, cooling, grounding and brewing stages of the gahwa to the serving phase at Qasr Al Hosn. qasralhosn.ae

Stand out from the crowd and try your hand at playing the Oud

A central instrument in Middle Eastern music, the Oud is a prominent string instrument shaped like a pear and has unique notes not found in Western music. It might be a little challenging, but it’s still a lot of fun to learn. The Musicians musical institute in Abu Dhabi are keen to pass on their passion for music to others, and you can learn Oud either at home or online. Sessions start from Dhs225 for a single class, or it’s Dhs1,725 for eight sessions.

Soak in the UAE’s history

Hidden among the bustling city centre is one of Abu Dhabi’s oldest heritage sites, Qasr Al Hosn. It comprises two major iconic buildings – the Inner Fort originally constructed in 1795 and the Outer Palace built from 1939 to 1945. After 11 years of conservation and restoration, it reopened as a museum in 2018, showcasing the development of Abu Dhabi from a settlement dependent on fishing and pearling back in the 18th century to the buzzing metropolis it is now. Expect to see artefacts and materials dating back as far as 6,000BC. Tickets are Dhs30. qasralhosn.ae

WHAT’S ON IN CONVERSATION WITH THE STARS OF GRAN TURISMO

There

Out in UAE cinemas this month, Gran Turismo is less about the computer game that shares its name (although in a very meta way, it is also about that), than it is about the miraculous real life story of Jann Mardenborough (played by Archie Madekwe). Jann was an elite gamer, a Gran Turismo grandmaster who was recruited into a racing academy on a marketing exec’s gut intuition that good gamers might make good drivers. It’s directed by Neill Blomkamp (District 9, Elysium) and the cast list includes Madekwe, Orlando Bloom, David Harbour, Josha Stradowski and Geri ‘Ginger Spice’ Horner. And we were lucky enough to catch up with key cast and crew whilst they were in town filming one of the movie’s key scenes. This is what happened, when What’s On met GT’s fast and famous...

What aspects of the real life Jann’s character did you want to make sure were portrayed in the film? Before this movie, I couldn’t even drive, so we had to solve that pretty quickly. But the thing that really stood out for me in conversations, was how much Jann grew through this experience. Like how introverted, shy and lost he felt before finding the GT Academy, and how ironically in these tiny, claustrophobic cockpit spaces, he really found himself. And he just grew into the person you see now, who’s extremely confident, knows what he wants,

knows himself – but the speed at which it happened, he went from being in his bedroom playing games to sitting on the podium at Le Mans in 12 months, that’s such insane acceleration.

You might have seen that Dubai Police have a lot of fast cars in their fleet. If you pulled a heist in Dubai, what’s your getaway car, and who’s driving?

I’m probably contractually obliged to say a Nissan GTR, and after all this experience, I’d have to be the driver.

FILM
INTERVIEW:
are no cheat codes for real life...
Archie Madekwe (Jann Mardenborough)

We’ve heard you’re a big gamer. Are there any videogames you’d like to see turned into movies or movies turned into videogames?

This is just my peculiar taste, but whilst videogame movies make a lot of money, I don’t love them and I think it’s because when you play a videogame you get to do what you want with ‘the thing’. Watching a movie, you sit back and take it in, with

Jann Mardenborough (the man whose real life story Gran Turismo is

based on)

Did doing a movie about your life dredge up any old trauma?

There was a moment that was difficult to revisit. It’s something I’ve processed for many years. And when the news was coming out that they want to make a film of my life and they want to include the Nürburgring, it brought up thoughts and emotions. My main concern was that it had to be represented properly. And it’s something that I made very clear has to be done right, because somebody lost their life, in that race, in a car that I was in control of. Freak circumstances. But they did do it right, and it was one of the few scenes that had to be CGI because they’ve remodeled the circuit in real life.

videogames you’re invested. I think the mediums are so different it’s hard to combine them, so this is why I think this [movie] is quite brilliant – because the videogame itself is a piece of the movie. It’s not trying to tell the story of GT, which is... there is no story. It has broader connotations. This kid goes on to do great things in the world from that videogame and I think that’s a fun thing to explore. Where videogames take us, how they take us there, those are ripe questions we should be asking and this movie dives into them.

Orlando

With Gran Turismo’s connection to the gaming world, we were wondering if we were to give you a cheat code for real life, what would it be?

I think something around martial arts, because I think it’s such a skill.

Josha Stradowski (Nicholas Capa, a rival driver)

What’s been your favourite track to go round?

This one (Dubai Autodrome) because it’s such a nice location. We’ve been in the cold for such a long time and Dubai’s such an amazing place to be. The Nürburgring in Germany is a very tough one, so I’m not sure if I can say I have a favourite, they’re all just very different. This one has many many turns, but we shot the most in Hungary. Who’s the better driver, you or Archie Madekwe? Well, we did some Go-Karting, and Capa was the winner.

THE SCARAB UNRAVELLING THE SUPER SECRETS OF

Blue Beetle, the next super-release from DC Studios, is scheduled to scuttle into UAE box offices on August 17. And despite the fact that its central character is less well-known than some of his spandex-toating, Kryptonitedodging, DC alumni – this is one of the most important movies the studio has worked on in years. It’s the story of Jaime Reyes (played by Xolo “Cobra Kai” Maridueña), just your average boy-nextdoor college grad who stumbles on a piece of alien tech and ends up as host marionette to a beetle-themed cyber entity called ‘the Scarab’. When bonded with Jaime it transforms into a super suit (not the sort you get 90 per cent off of, at mall store ‘closing down sales’), a weaponised

item of apparel that immediately renders our protagonist a tool of cosmic potency. And as we all know, with great power comes great expectations. Or something like that.

One of the reasons why Blue Beetle is such a key step on the DC journey is that James Gunn (CoCEO of DC Studios) has stated that Jaime Reyes/Blue Beetle is the newly created DCU’s (the reboot for the DCEU) first character. The announcement came straight from Gunn’s chamber on the Inside of You podcast, and although he also clarified that Superman: Legacy will be the first DCU movie, the character’s anointment conveys a huge

amount of top-down faith in the cast, crew and vision of the director. What’s On was lucky enough to sit down with the film’s charismatic helmsman, director Angel Manuel Soto to find out what we can expect from this new dawn.

46 AUGUST 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // FILM FOCUS
What’s On talks to Blue Beetle Director, Angel Manuel Soto, about Miles Morales crossovers, kicking off a legacy and great responsibilities…

From the trailer it looks like Xolo is the perfect pick for Jaime. Was he somebody that you had in mind for the role right from the beginning?

Since the moment that I got the opportunity to work on this project, I couldn’t stop thinking about Xolo Maridueña to play the part. I had met him before, and he had a very positive impression on me. Even before Cobra Kai, when he was a kid. So when I got the project and started skimming the comic books again, and going deeper on it... it was just him. He looks like Jaime, he acts like him, I couldn’t think of anybody else in that role. So I was surprised and delighted to find out that he was also the fancast choice to play Jaime. Are there any characters you’d love to get on the big screen for any future Blue Beetle projects?

The opportunities are endless. I have always wanted him to eventually face The Reach (an imperialistic hoard of aliens). I know, I want him to face the Black Beetle. I also want him to have those encounters he had in the comics with the Green Lantern Corps, the arch enemies of The Reach and the Scarabs. I always liked the idea that the Justice League is involved – they’re after him, only to find out they need him. He’s the key to destroying a big earth threat. Blue Beetle really is a powerful force, with a unique manifestation of weapons. And Jaime himself, being the kid that he is, with such a powerful world destroying weapon, allows him to be face off or bond with all the super characters in the DC Universe. And who knows, I’ve always toyed with the idea of doing a crossover with Miles Morales, that could be cool.

What an amazing movie that would be. There’s also a line about Batman in the trailer, that cracked us up...

We’ve always had fun with it. Like, what if something happens and somebody finds that this world-destroying weapon is in the hands of this kid, who lives in a humble neighbourhood, and everyone wants to get. For example Batman – he wants to get it to stop it falling into the wrong hands.

And Batman finds out what Jaime’s uncle Rudy (George Lopez) said (he called Batman “a fascist”) and they have that moment where they meet. Because Uncle Rudy is a geek, he’s a conspiracy theorist, so he’d love Batman’s tech, and Batman would be like “I thought you said I was a fascist” and I think it would open up some really fun moments.

Blue Beetle has been labelled as the first live action superhero movie to feature a Latino in the lead role. Did you feel any pressure from the community to represent the culture in an authentic or specific way?

I didn’t feel pressure, I felt a responsibility. I wanted to make it as authentic as possible and as universal as possible, although I’m not of Mexican descent. Luckily our writer, Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer is, so he made sure all the nuances and idiosyncrasies from his culture were implemented in the script. Latinos are not a monolith, not every Latino is the same –so it’s difficult to make sure it’s something that everyone from the community can gather together and support, and then

at the same time, show versions of our culture to others that are not Latino so that they can still feel part of this journey. This hero is not just a hero for Latinos, he’s a hero for everyone. What can you tell us about the motivations of the villain of the piece, Conrad Carapax – The Indestructible Man (played by Raoul Max Trujillo)? When Gareth was working on the script, trying to figure out who Blue Beetle was going to face, we looked at all the different villains, and although Victoria Kord (Susan Sarandon) is the brains behind the operations, the one who is in control of Kord Industries when we begin the film, Carapax is like her muscle. We took the original vision of Conrad Carapax from the comics and incorporated elements of the OMAC Project (another limited comic series). We tried to create this super soldier, that has a lot of backstory and baggage with him. That’s where Raoul came in, and as a Latino, he comes with a lot of history, interventionism – creating a villain that has a little bit more depth than we’re used to. There’s a whole legacy behind him, so we try to tailor this villain to a way where he can face off against Blue Beetle, matching him in terms of power and energy, but also as a balance of plot, backstory and sub text.

DISPELLING THE MYTHOS OF

58 AUGUST 2023 | WHATSON.AE
Why Mykonos is a surprisingly fun family getaway

If there’s one country in the world that is borderline guaranteed to melt away stress, it’s Greece. And Mykonos’ endless blue hues, sandy beaches, and whitewashed architecture amount to a soothing Odyssey for the soul. The Greek ‘Island of Light’, Mykonos, is many things –glamorous, hedonistic, nocturnal, paradisal, and in places, gilded with extravagance, but one word not often used to describe it, is peaceful.

We registered this dissonance approximately two hours after checking-in, while enjoying a laidback sunset dinner in one of the authentic seafront tavernas of Little Venice. In its heyday, the breezy island welcomed Golden Age A-Listers such as Aristotle Onassis, Jackie Kennedy, Mick Jagger, Grace Kelly, and Brigitte Bardot who were enamored by the magical light, beautiful alleys, and crystal-clear Aegean Sea.

Since then, Mykonos has evolved to become the (still sophisticated) party capital of the Cyclades; a clubber’s Xanadu that comes alive between the hours of 1am and 5am, not to mention the 24-hour beach clubs. In fact, if you Google “party island” it’s one of the first results that comes up after Ibiza. But beyond the beats and beach clubs,

Mykonos has so much more to offer. And, although it’s always likely to attract sun-seeking ravers, the island has a different side, a laidback loveliness that makes it perfectly prepped for families and other kinds of holiday makers.

As Anthony Bourdain once said, “So many of the good times travelling this world relate directly to finding a human face to associate with your destination, the food you eat, and the memories you keep forever”. For visitors who want to experience the island in authenticity and simplicity, from its ancient history to mesmerising nature, here is our guide…

“SO MANY OF THE GOOD TIMES TRAVELLING THIS WORLD RELATE DIRECTLY TO FINDING A HUMAN FACE TO ASSOCIATE WITH YOUR DESTINATION, THE FOOD YOU EAT, AND THE MEMORIES YOU KEEP FOREVER” - ANTHONY BOURDAIN

THINGS TO SEE AND DO

1. Little Venice: The charming old town of Mykonos, from the iconic windmills to cobblestone alleys, is one of the most famous parts of the island. Shop at the little boutiques, eat your way through the seafront restaurants (we recommend Kastro’s for views and vibes or Meatropolitan for gyros and wine), check out the famous Paraportiani church, and watch the sunset beyond the sparkling Aegean Sea.

2. Vioma Organic Farm and Vineyard: Around a 15-minute drive inland (also a popular cycling route), this family-run vineyard and farm is an authentic Mykonos experience we’d definitely do again. Tucked away in the hills, start with a free guided tour of the vines and farm, feed the farm animals, and sample some of their organic Mykonian wines (EUR15 for three glasses) with a selection of Greek cheeses.

3. Zuma Mykonos: From an authentic Mykonian experience to something a little more cosmopolitan, a pool day at Zuma tops our

INSIDE TIP: Thanks to Mykonos’s dinky size (just six miles long and nine miles wide), nothing is ever more than a 30-minute drive away and the best way to head off the beaten path and discover the island’s hidden gems is to rent a car (costing around EUR60 per day during peak season).

recommendations for its unmatched views, stunning infinity pool, and adorable children’s play area. Head here early to secure one of the floating sunbeds followed by a late lunch. Neither you nor the little ones will want to leave.

4. Delos and Rhenia: Explore empty beaches and archaeological ruins with a boat trip to Mykonos’ Cycladic sisters, Rhenia and Delos. The Aegean Ventures boat drops anchor in a remote cove of Rhenia where the family serve a traditional Greek lunch of salad, tzatziki, and souvlaki, while you jump in and soak up the sun before heading to UNESCO World Heritage Site and the birthplace of Apollo, Delos.

5. Kiki’s Tavern: You’re likely to have heard of this (notso) hidden gem of a restaurant. Worth crossing the island for, Kiki’s Tavern is located on the breathtaking Agios Sostis beach. No electricity, no walls, no sign, you’ll know when you see it by the queue of people waiting outside. Say efcharistó as the charismatic owner hands out free rosé and be sure to order the anchovies (EUR12) and octopus (EUR30).

Disclaimer: This is not your average back-to-back packed holiday itinerary. But then again, this is not your average escape. According to a local, “There is nothing you must see in Mykonos.” Instead, you allow your senses to guide you and, through slowing down and savouring moments, you’ll uncover the magic of the island. Eat, stroll, drink, eat some more, repeat…

Pelagos exudes a certain remoteness and freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere - a perfect escape to a traditional Mykonos experience away from the party crowds. Mykonos Theoxenia

Built in the 1960s, this landmark hotel was the island’s first fivestar hotel and makes for a sophisticated stay in a central location. Overlooking the iconic windmills, the newly refurbed Theoxenia is a stone’s-throw away from the maze streets of Little Venice and the old port, perfect for those looking to balance their energetic days with a place where serenity reigns. The contemporary, light-filled space is given a garden-like ambiance surrounded by olive trees, palms, and bougainvillea. The rooms do the basics well, so as not to distract from the beauty of its ocean-blue views, with a spacious balcony, warm accents of terracotta and wood, and marble ensuites. Inspired by the laid-back charm of the Cycladic lifestyle, guests can expect an authentically Greek breakfast buffet from spinach pies and a selection of cheeses to Greek donuts and fresh fruit. While Theoxenia is a family-friendly hotel, it’s best suited to couples, solo travellers, or families with older children.

Limassol LIVE, LOVE,

A City of Dreams on an island of sunbeams

When you first think of Cyprus, what comes to mind? The archeological sites of Paphos? The birthplace of Aphrodite? For many it’s the party city of Ayia Napa, which has an expanse of pristine beaches and countless trendy clubbing locales scattered around the city. But just an hour away is the very different, super laidback, city of Limassol.

Cyprus’ southernmost city is located a 50-minute hop from Lanarca International Airport. Along the way you’ll journey past mountain rock and leafy canopy, the less seen side of Cypriot beauty. Limassol is a stunning, booming,

and increasingly cosmopolitan enclave with rich and gorgeously diverse cultural threads. Unsurprising perhaps given that Cyprus is a melting pot island – just skimming the history books will reveal how coveted a prize it was for many nations. And you can still see the storied remnants of different customs and traditions rooted in the Cypriot way, today.

Chief amongst the roster of things to do in Limassol, include walking the pretty promenades, relaxing at bougie beach bars, sipping quality coffee in the countless cafés and enjoying big James Bond vibes at the recently opened casino.

EXPLORING THE CITY

One of our favourite sight-seeing expeditions takes you through the old city of Kourion. Along the way you’ll pass visual clues alluding to the deep history of colonisation that Cyprus was built on.

From the Greeks to the British, Ottoman, Turkish and Roman Empires – remnants of the war and the lives lived in Cyprus are clearly depicted through the destruction and reconstruction of Kourion. The city today invites visitors to learn about the Greek settlers, with an agora, amphitheatre and what would

have been a bath house, learn about how women were revered, and how business would have been conducted in the bath houses.

Consider a visit to the castle of St. George where King Richard the Lionheart married Berengaria of Navarre in 1191, the only British royal wedding to take place outside of the UK. Expert guided tours are optional and give you the best experience. Onto slightly more modern sight-seeing, wander through the Limassol marina and along the pier where you can shop for souvenirs and trinkets before stopping off to enjoy a traditional Cypriot coffee and biscuits.

MUST TRY

When ordering a coffee in one of the many cafés, be sure to try a frappe. Similar to the viral Korean Dalgona coffee, a frappe is a whipped coffee drink that is poured over ice with either milk or water. We recommend limited sugar, and water for a creamy iced americano. Paired with loukoumi and baklava it is the perfect afternoon treat.

WHERE TO STAY

Our top pick for your base camp is the box-fresh contemporary resort, City of Dreams Mediterranean. It boasts five pool areas, an adventure park complete with zipline, a trampoline zone, spa, casino, and four signature dining outlets. The rooms are bright and airy, the furniture cut from modern European cloth, and the glass fronted bathroom comes with a stand-alone bathtub. Views overlook the pool area and, in the distance, the ocean beckons. A Waverider surf attraction and the adventure park can be found in the far corner of the resort just off to the side of the pools, perfect for keeping the kids (and big kids) busy during the day. A onenight stay in a City of Dreams Mediterranean starts from Dhs1,803 per night.

Fairmont Bab Al Bahr

Craving beachside bliss in Abu Dhabi? The lap of luxury awaits…

LOCATION

On the sun-drenched shorefront of Khor Al Maqta in Abu Dhabi sits Fairmont Bab Al Bahr. The expansive property, adorned almost entirely in shimmering glass, overlooks a gorgeous white-sand beachfront true to its name, which translates to ‘gateway to the sea.’ Backdropping the golden beach is a stunning view of the emirate’s crowning jewel, Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque.

LOOK AND FEEL

More glass equals more sunshine. As you check-in to your suite, you are immediately tempted to walk on down the sunlit foyer to catch a glimpse of the hotel’s private beach – a sight that signals the official start of your staycation. When you’re back to enjoy the indoors after an afternoon of fun in the sun, riveting design welcomes you to the foyer as ornate ceiling lamps illuminate the grandeur of the property.

ROOMS

We check-in to a grand Fairmont Gold suite, and our first instinct is to flop down on the uber-comfy couches, dig into a colourful basket of fruit, and tune in to the innumerable regional entertainment

options at your fingertips. So much so, you almost forget about a deluxe suite oozing luxury and waiting to be discovered. Many of the rooms offer stunning views of the expansive beach and Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque, reminding you of why you chose to live in this beautiful city. Urban luxury is your perennial plus-one, with a fragrant range of Le Labo bath and body products pampering you throughout your weekend. You’ll be looking and feeling fresher than a daisy, long after you’ve enjoyed soaking in your in-suite bathtub that could double as a wading pool.

FOOD AND DRINK

Guests are greeted into the welcoming Lobby Lounge, which serves up a selection of refreshing snack and beverage options. The lower-level houses the three flagship restaurants of the property – luxury dining at Marco Pierre White Steakhouse; CuiScene, with its lavish international buffet; and Mazaj, for some of the best Mediterranean food in town. Be sure to try Mazaj’s refreshing Hibiscus Paradise on a searing summer day, with strong notes

of hibiscus and passionfruit puckering your tastebuds until the last sip. To complement your drink, a cold mezze of melt-in-the-mouth Raheb will do the trick – succulent flavours that perfectly converge together.

FACILITIES

For its five-star fitness facility, the hotel has teamed up with Volt Fitness, and it’s helmed by top trainers available to ensure you don’t miss a step towards your fitness goals. The facility brings you a sizeable selection of free weights, compound movement machines, cardio machines, CrossFit equipment and wellness options, mere steps away from the main lobby. If sweating it out is not on your to-do list, a traipse through the grandiose lobby will have you on the private beach, wondering whether to resort to the pool, take a dip in the open water or simply lounge on a turquoise beach chair.

FINAL NOTES

If you find yourself wishing the beach would stay accessible beyond sunset, we echo your sentiments. If you find yourself checking out wearily when it’s time to leave, we empathise. But we’re sure you will return very soon, and so will we.
