DO YOU COPE WITH THE SUMMER HEAT?”

… my friends back in England ask me on repeat. “How do you cope with the UK winters?” is my eternal retort.

Unlike Elsa, the Frozen protagonist who sang the musical masterpiece now instantly recognisable in households with under sixes across the globe, Let It Go, the cold does bother me. Far more than the heat ever has. Perhaps I’m just a bit immune to it now as I embark on my eighth UAE summer. The tip-toe dance required to make it across the beach to the sea; the pointless exercise of applying make up in a morning only to have to redo it the second you step outside; the choice of restaurant for dinner dictated solely by the power of their AC… these are all just regular parts of resident life during summer in Abu Dhabi.

But in a city like ours, a little thing like the weather won’t stop us doing the things we love. And as the temperatures creep up outdoors, it’s the turn of chill-inducing activities to shine.

So I invite you to embrace your inner Elsa this month, just like I will, because there’s snow way you’ll want to miss out on having the coolest summer ever. With that in mind, we present all the epic ways to chill out without breaking a sweat in Abu Dhabi from p14. From a deep dive into Snow Abu Dhabi – the coolest new attraction in the city – to ice baths, ice cream and ice rinks – it’s the ultimate guide to helping you beat the heat this month.

Enjoy the issue,

WHAT’S ON

Catching up over business lunch at... Drift Beach

I have officially declared the end of alfresco dining this summer, but thanks to a mass of high-impact AC units, you can still enjoy the outdoor feel with indoor cool at Drift Beach. It was here I found myself for a lovely business lunch recently, catching up over Provençalinspired plates like lentil salad, beef carpaccio and roasted salmon.

@driftbeachdubai

Being super lastminute and booking my mani-pedi through… ServiceMarket

I’m always scrambling for time. And it’s usually self-care that’s pushed down the priority list. Ahead of a recent vacation, my nails were in need of a little TLC. Though I was running short on time, I knew I had to get it done. So, I decided to get a mani-pedi at home through ServiceMarket. I was even lucky enough to clip a little off the price.

@myservicemarket

The ease that is… Dubai Airports and Terminal 3

Over the last Eid break, I set off to Saudi Arabia for the first time ever, and whilst I adored Jeddah, I was happy arriving back in Dubai because I knew that I would be out of the airport in under an hour, easily. DXB is so streamlined and organised that I didn’t even have to take my passport out of my backpack. The e-gate scanned my eyes, and the doors opened before I could even unzip the pouch.

@DXB

Binge watching... Derry Girls

I’m late to this one, but after a recommendation from a friend, I’ve finally started watching Derry Girls - and now I’m hooked. I absolutely loved how witty and emotional the show was, and binged it in a day. I laughed, I teared up and now I think it’s time for a rewatch especially for Sister Michael’s deadpan jokes. I adore Siobhán McSweeney.

Enjoying the outstanding sundowner views of... Above Eleven

With tonnes of trendy bars, choosing where to go for sundowners on the Palm can be a tortuous affair. But we can save you the agony of indecision. Try Above Eleven. You’ll find it at the Marriott Resort Palm Jumeirah. It has stunning views, and the cocktail collection is scandalously good, as is the Peruvian-Japanese menu.

@aboveelevendubai

Taste testing the world’s third-best burger at… Eleven Green

Gourmet burger eatery, Eleven Green is the brainchild of Sultan and Kinda Chatila, the husbandand-wife duo behind sell-out supper club Tano’s at 8. The menu may be compact, but it’s clear the Eleven Green hype is completely justified. @elevengreen.uae

Getting competitive at… Unwind Specialty Boardgame Cafe

My girlfriends and I are competitive, so Unwind Specialty Boardgame Cafe is the perfect place for us to meet up. The variety of games at the café will blow your mind and the staff is incredibly helpful despite our group of screeching women. The fries and the milkshakes are my strongest menu recommendation. With dippage. Builds character.

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Mona Kattan

Each month, we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-try dishes and local brands they love. This month, we chat to Mona Kattan (@monakattan), entrepreneur, beauty mogul and founder of Kayali Fragrances. She shares some of her favourite spots you need on your radar.

A fragrance that transports me is KAYALI Utopia

Vanilla Coco | 21. I created this juice during lockdown when I was craving a dreamy beach holiday. It instantly transports me to the amazing beaches of the Seychelles and drinking freshly cut coconuts on the sand.

@kayali

Burj Al Arab is definitely my favourite staycation spot. You can often find me poolside there as it is so relaxing and it overlooks the ocean, so you feel like you’re on a beautiful island getaway. I love being in and near the water, it’s my happy place.

@burjalarab

Right now, I’m loving Palm West Beach. It’s so chilled, but there’s always something happening at the same time. It’s perfect to go for a walk with your friends, your pets or just go for a nice bite and watch an incredible sunset. I love it.

@palmwestbeach

My favourite restaurant is hands down, 3Fils. My husband and I go all the time. Their food is divine and I love that it’s super casual and by the water. Make sure you try their Wagyu Burger. You can thank me later!

@3.fils

There’s always something new and fabulous happening everyday in Dubai, from restaurant openings to concerts and museums. My favourite new discovery is the new Atlantis The Royal. The suites are absolutely gorgeous, the restaurants are incredible, and the pool has the most amazing view.

WHATSON.AE | JULY 2023 15 COOLEST SUMMER EVER

Abu Dhabi’s summers are always scorchers, but this year, the weather is also what meteorologists (or we) call ‘hotter than Pickl’s Reaper chicken sando’. So, when the city starts sizzling, it’s worth having a few go-to places where you can beat the heat. We’ve compiled a handy list of the venues and activities around town where you can chill out, be cool, and generally escape the rising temperatures in style.

THE BIG NEW ONE!

Abu Dhabi-based adventure seekers need not fly all the way to the Alps or, dare we say it, drive to Dubai to spend a day in the snow, because we’ve now got our own blanket of the white stuff right in the heart of the city.

The long-awaited Snow Abu Dhabi officially opened last month at Reem Mall. Inside, Snow Abu Dhabi features 9,732 squaremetres of snowy terrain, with a whole host of activities on offer for all ages. The best part is that it’s open year-round maintaining a wintry temperature of –2 degrees Celsius - even when the capital is practically melting.

RIDES AND ATTRACTIONS

While there are no skiing opportunities in Snow Abu Dhabi, there are over 20 different rides and experiences to try. Donning Snow Abu Dhabi-branded winter gear, visitors can ride the crystal carousel, or hop aboard the polar express train that travels past snowbanks, and enchanted forests. Other experiences include riding the icy bumper cars or taking a wander through the wintry tree tops for an aerial view of the park. You can make your way up the slope, slide inside an inflatable zorb ball and roll down a snowy lane; soar through the air on an exciting zipline; or take on the downhill run in a rubber tube for two, and slip ‘n’ slide your way down a snow-covered slope.

FOOD AND DRINK

At The Lodge, Snow Abu Dhabi’s wintry restaurant located on level three, guests can warm up with an all-day breakfast, featuring French toast, shakshuka, or blueberry pancakes; fill up on a range of juicy burgers served with sea salt fries; or feast on mains such as truffle penne alfredo, butter chicken or steak rosti. Kids have their own dedicated menu with dishes like chicken tenders, tomato penne and mac ‘n’ cheese. For hungry guests already deep in the snow, there’s the Enchanted Café, located in the heart of Snow Abu Dhabi, offering a range snacks and drinks, surrounded by all the magic of the wintery wonderland. Be sure to try Snow Abu Dhabi’s signature hot chocolate while you’re there.

Get your skates on at Zayed Sports City Ice Rink

Abu Dhabi isn’t exactly known for winter sports enthusiasts, but ice skating is a great way to cool down after a long, sweaty day in the UAE sun. Ice rinks have to be immaculately air-conditioned to keep their skating areas at an even freeze, and between that and the cool air radiating off the ice, you might even have to bust out the coat you have in the back of your wardrobe for winter holidays. Zayed Sports City Ice Rink is the perfect place to test out those dormant cold-weather skills. Look out for the Wednesday morning (9.15am to 10am), adults-only coffee and skate lessons. Otherwise it’s Dhs55 entry in the day, and Dhs105 at night, with ladies-only sessions every Friday.

Zayed Sports City, Abu Dhabi, timings vary between noon and 9.30pm approximately. Tel: (0)2 403 4333. @zayedsportscity

Feel cool – and cultured – at Louvre Abu Dhabi

Just like you, masterpiece artworks are very susceptible to temperature extremes, so visiting Louvre Abu Dhabi – and its floating dome of light and shade – is an excellent way to chill out while enjoying a little bit of culture. The patterned roof permits daylight without too much heating, and features such as the stone floor and wall cladding keep the building cooler for longer as the day heats up.

Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island, daily 10am to midnight (galleries close at 6.30pm on weekdays and 8.30pm on weekends), Mondays closed. From Dhs63 per person, under 18s free, UAE residents over 60 free. Tel: (600) 565566. @louvreabudhabi

Try cryotherapy at °CRYO

The UAE-born wellness franchise has got it all when it comes to icy cutting-edge health and wellness treatments, from ice blast facials and full body cryo to localised cryo, providing the perfect remedy for a sweaty summer. For those who don’t know, cryotherapy is where you’re blasted with sub-freezing temperatures to soothe pain, reduce inflammation, and boost mood, energy, and sleep. Don’t worry, the blasting only lasts a short time for first-timers, and you can even bring friends to join in the fun. Step out and your body will be ready to fight the heat for the rest of the day.

Catch a movie in air-conditioned luxury at Theatre at Vox

While Vox cinemas in Yas Mall offers multi-screen options showing all manner of blockbusters from Hollywood to Bollywood, our favourite screen is Theatre. It’s an upmarket experience with great AC, reclining seats, blankets and plenty of arm rest space, but it’s also focused on its food offering. The new Theatre menu brings together everything from dynamite shrimp, mac ‘n’ cheese bites, and vegan tacos to mini hotdogs, nachos and flatbreads.

Cool yourself down from the inside out with an ice cream sando

When it comes to hunting down ice cream, there are heaps of cold and creamy options all over Abu Dhabi. You can’t go wrong with the chocolate camel milk ice cream topped with gold bling from Emirates Palace, or the matcha soft serve from Soo Matcha, but our favourite has to be Pickl’s ice cream sando (Dhs27). A feat of engineering that, when done correctly, results in the most exquisite play of textures: two, crunchy fried buns cradling silky smooth salted caramel ice cream.

BB SOCIAL DINING

Ha-BB welcome to Abu Dhabi...

Al Maryah Island is home to one of the most prestigious dining strips in the whole of the Middle East, aided by two luxe hotels on either side of The Galleria’s waterfront promenade. And it’s one of those – the regal Rosewood Abu Dhabi – that provides the home for Al Maryah’s latest hall of fame signing.

Straight outta DIFC, BB Social Dining is a true Dubai culinary treasure – an Asian eatery visited on more than one occasion by Dubai royalty. It’s the latest project from culinary power pairing chef Alexander Stump and Spero Panagakis, and famously divides its menu into boxes beginning with the letter ‘B’. Think baos, bowls, bites and BBQ.

This Abu Dhabi location has just swung open its doors, and it brings with it some new dishes uniquely available in the capital.

Other fresh and distinctive features of this Abu Dhabi venture include a water view shisha terrace that will surely draw the crowds to fragranced clouds as soon as the weather is a little less smeltery. Elsewhere, the brand’s strong and subtle voice comes through cleanly with bold lines, bespoke art, big neon sass, botanical elements and banquettes of blue and white. We’re snapped from design reverie by the arrival of our first edible ensemble. It’s the crispy soy Brussels sprouts (Dhs45) and cauliflower popcorn (Dhs45). Both have their own cult following in Dubai, and for good reason. The former is an unmatched ambassador for the unfairly maligned, festive vegetable, and carefully unwraps any pre-existing prejudice you might have lurking under your canopy.

And on to the dim sum. These Abu Dhabi exclusives really deserve applause and although the profoundly juicy prawn and lobster har gow (Dhs55) garner our fondest affections, it isn’t easy to pick a winner. The east-west fusion raging inside the delicate parcels of wagyu gyoza (Dhs55) mark it as an instant classic. And we have nothing but deep praise for the bright spark that added a spicy tomato salsa to the dipping sauce trilogy.

Amongst the cacophony of quality that makes up the BB menu, it’s the truffled rib-eye (Dhs189) that muscles in and steals the belt. Cubed for your chopsticking convenience and served charred with a truffle and smoked aubergine sauce – it’s the sort of eclectic, clever, exquisitely realised dish that exemplifies the brand.

We end things with a bang on a beignet (Dhs52), a fluffy doughnut variant made with bao pastry, coated in sugar and paired with berry confiture. A refined way to bao out.

BB Social Dining, Rosewood Abu Dhabi, Al Maryah Island, 12pm to 12am Mon to Fri, 12pm to 1am Fri to Sat). Tel: (0)2 236 2600, @bbabudhabi

REVIEW: SLAW AND MORE

The traditional burger joint gets a fine-dining upgrade

We might be biased, but we’re confident that What’s On readers know their stuff. At the What’s On Dubai Awards 2023, they crowned Slaw as the city’s Favourite Burger. So, when chef and founder Ali Yazdi decided to expand his empire of brilliantly good burgers to Abu Dhabi, we knew we needed to be among the first to check it out.

There’s a reason that the capital edition, located in Al Qana, is called Slaw and More. The offering at this branch is more premium than the Slaw burger bars found in Dubai. Positioned as the ‘UAE’s first burger boutique,’ this is less about fast food and more about offering an upscale dining experience to guests.

The space still has a casual, come-asyou-are feeling: There’s a glass-fronted kitchen, booth seating in turquoise leathers, neon signs, and colourful murals that include a fun picture of chef Ali wearing his signature backwards cap. But then there’s more elevated touches, including DJ decks, a mocktail bar, and a

meat fridge where guests can admire the premium cuts of Wagyu. The menu is also a reflection of Slaw and More’s more fancy feel – as is the pricing, with sandos priced from Dhs80 and Dhs160 and burgers ranging from Dhs99 to Dhs180. Decadent twists on wings, fried chicken, corn and calamari open the menu, then there’s a selection of burgers and sandos, a trio of fries and a singular dessert. From the starters, the curlimara (Dhs60) arrives as pieces of thinly cut and lightly fried squid with a subtle hint of spice, that we drizzle with grilled lemon and dip in a thick tartar sauce. The ancho ranch chicken poppers (Dhs45) are outstanding, the crisp and crunch perfectly pairing with the creamy ranch sauce.

We opt for the fish sando (Dhs160) next, which is presented like the traditional British fish finger sandwich. Except alongside a fillet of fresh battered hammour served in the plump brioche bun, there’s also layers of American cheese and a tartar sauce spiked with yuzu caviar. It sounds like it shouldn’t work, but trust us, it does. We

can’t resist trying the canoe bone marrow burger (Dhs130), made using 10-day dry aged Wagyu. Alongside the melt-in-themouth patty, it’s layered with American cheese and fermented cucumber, encased in the same perfectly toasted brioche bun as the fish sando. On the side, we receive two soy glazed grilled bone marrows, the contents of which we drizzle into the bun. The black rubber gloves laid next to our cutlery come in handy as we take a first bite into this amalgam of power flavours, each one enhancing the next.

There may only be one dessert on the menu (Dhs40), but it’s an only child that needs no siblings. A gooey mix of valrhona chocolate and cookie crumble is set in a skillet, its warmth given a cool chill thanks to a dollop of vanilla ice cream, the whole dish of sweetness with a sauce topping of chef

Ali’s two childhood favourite chocolate bars: Snickers and Twix, melted into one.

Slaw and More, Al Qana, Al Maqta Street, 10am to 1am Sun to Thurs, 10am to 2am Fri and Sat. Tel: (0)54 289 9323.

BAR OF THE MONTH: MCCAFFERTY’S

YAS ISLAND

Good craic and great grub make this an excellent addition to Yas Island

Icelebrated my 21st birthday in a pub in Dublin. I remember this as I step into McCafferty’s Yas Island. In an instant, I’m back in that buzzing Irish bar: I can smell the smoky aroma, feel the sticky floors from spilled drinks, and almost see the merry patrons draped around each other, singing along to a band

None of this is the case at the Abu Dhabi iteration of Dubai’s beloved McCafferty’s. The floors are remarkably clean, the stage remains empty (we’re told live music starts later on, for now a playlist of Irish tracks sounds from a playlist), and the only scent wafting through the air is from the kitchen. But what the two places share, is an instantly welcoming feel.

It comes, in part, from the authentic design. As first timers, we struggle to locate the entrance, tucked on the ground floor of Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island. When we do find it, we immediately know we’re in the

right place thanks to a neat row of fake shop fronts in shades of rust and emerald that surround the entrance. Inside, the same traditional aesthetic continues. The double height ceiling is filled with antiques and artefacts, and walls are lined with posters and signs that feature iconic Irish sayings. Everything, we’re told, has been imported from Ireland, from the telephone box to the vintage pots and pans that hang from above.

We quickly see the same authenticity extends to the menu, where as much of the produce as possible is sourced from Ireland. We order from both the starter and mains sections, so we’re surprised when everything arrives together. We query it, but a friendly server advises us that this pub food comes out all together,

so it can be enjoyed sharing style.

The McCafferty’s fried chicken tenders (Dhs75) arrive as a generous portion of meaty, breadcrumbed chicken, deep fried and designed to be dunked in an accompanying trio of dips: smoky bbq, garlic mayo and sriracha. Then we move on to mains. The Irish pork belly burger (Dhs95) is packed with slow cooked pork belly, smoky bacon, a fried egg and a zesty Ballymaloe relish. It’s greasy, meaty and deliciously indulgent. A proper fish and chips (Dhs99) also hits the spot, and lets the quality ingredients do the talking. The fish is fresh and flakes apart effortlessly, the batter light and crunchy, and we’d love to get our hands on the recipe for the curry sauce served with our chunky chips. Despite being immensely full, we can’t resist dessert and order the warm apple crumble (Dhs40), concluding things on a deliciously sweet note with a scoop of vanilla ice cream and a jug of warm custard.

McCafferty’s, Hilton Abu Dhabi Yas Island, Yas Bay, daily 9am to 2am. Tel: (0)58 598 3623. mccaffertysyas. com

BRUNCH OF THE MONTH:

SUNDAY BBQ AT BUTCHER & STILL

Devour smoked meats and DIY Bloody Mary’s at Marshall Roth’s superb steakhouse

While Abu Dhabi is no Texas, there’s one destination bringing smoked meats and fire-licked treats into the spotlight: Butcher & Still. The multi award-winning steakhouse in the Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi is spearheaded by chef extraordinaire Marshall Roth, who brings to bear his knowledge on faithful barbecue recipes.

The result is a Sunday barbecue brunch with a line of help-yourself starters such as the freshly shucked oysters, green lip mussels, beef tartare and Butcher’s Cobb salad, with the barbecued meats served deeper into the restaurant.

Start by making friends with head bartender Luigi Landi, who’ll do his best to guide you on how to create the perfect

Bloody Mary. With a range of salted rim flavours, garnishes, and free-flow Worcestershire sauce, it’s easy to go overboard with toppings and mix-ins, and what starts as a perfectly balanced brunch drink can quickly transform into a Frankenstein’s monster of a cocktail. Listen with intent – or grab a few alreadyprepped infused cocktails on ice – and you’ll not go wrong.

Bread, butter, Cajun fried popcorn chicken and barbecue sauce-laden chicken wings are served to your table before the main event, an American dream combo that combines high-quality meat and a simple peppercorn dry rub. The low and slow cooking results in a super fatty and moist brisket that is the star of Chef Roth’s BBQ show. You must beef up your plate with a burnt ends burger, which takes the juicy, smoky and caramelised outside bark of the brisket and stuffs it into a potato bun. As for the sides, face plant into a breadcrumbtopped mac ‘n’ cheese, or the

all-American cornbread. There’s also a hot skillet of (relatively untouched) grilled veggies for those in search of a more balanced plate.

The only thing able to upstage that gloriously tender brisket is the pie bar. The larger-than-life counter is lined with a selection of enormous, home-baked delights the likes of which we’ve only seen in movies. Door-wedge sized slices of lemon pie with cloud-like meringue and sticky lemon curd; sour-yet-sweet muffinshaped cherry pies; and a mind-blowing chocolate pie that’ll soon be the stuff of legends. It would be an American crime not to try a slice.

Butcher & Still, Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi at Maryah Island, Abu Dhabi Sun 1pm to 4pm, Dhs320 with soft drinks, Dhs410 with house drinks. Tel: (0)2 333 2444. @butcherandstill

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

This is elevated American backyard barbecue of the highest calibre. Pick up heaping plates of brisket, burnt ends and all of your favourite sides… but do your darndest to save room for a slice o’ pie.

REVIEW: BA:TE

Proof that there’s no such thing as too much cherry blossom

We thought we’d seen all the most beautiful and Instagrammable restaurants in Abu Dhabi, but then Ba:TE came along and blew them all out of the water. If you like your restaurant’s extravagant, flamboyant and very photo-worthy, it doesn’t get much better than this.

Overlooking the serene waters of the Mangrove National Park, the expansive terrace is sure to be a big hit during the cooler months. But the inside is just as stunning. Describing itself as fine-dining Japanese infused with Korean and Peruvian influences, every corner is adorned with handmade lanterns, artworks and traditional Korean artefacts. Providing a full cultural immersion into the flavours and culture of the east, the chef and many of the staff are Korean. Part of the dining room is even set inside an enormous lantern (it’s less weird than it sounds, believe us).

But the real highlight lies inside an unremarkable looking green cupboard. Like a scene straight from Narnia, the wooden doors open to reveal a passageway into Abu Dhabi’s coolest hidden bar, Jumak.

Backing up our theory that you can never have too much fake cherry blossoms, half the ceiling of Jumak is covered in picturesque pink blooms. The whole place is nextlevel cool, and the food and drinks are just as extra as the décor.

After sipping our way through fun test-tube welcome drinks, we find that the extensive menu holds an overwhelming array of sushi and ceviche to choose from. So instead, we opt for a platter that includes a bit of everything (Dhs329). Served on a massive three-tiered construction, it’s overflowing with dry ice and greenery. But it’s far from style over substance. The maki rolls are sensational, including some unique and unusual varieties such as white kimchi and moromi

miso, alongside explosively flavoursome ceviche and silky salmon nigiri. Everything is made with top quality ingredients and expert skill. The apple and seaweed salad is delightfully refreshing without being too fishy, while the wagyu croquettes get devoured in seconds.

The main courses are mainly clay pots, robata grills and skewers. While the Ansim steak (Dhs218) is super tasty with a topping of spicy teriyaki and pickled cucumber, the black cod clay pot (Dhs189) is a little bland and the only dish that doesn’t quite hit the mark.

The creative, oriental-themed mixed drinks are well worth a try, and saving room for a bite of indulgent chocolate fondant (Dhs61) should be compulsory.

STEP INTO THE COSMOS

Prepare for lift off, young explorers…

It was back in 1957 when human beings first started venturing into space. The world has come a long way since, and the UAE in particular has been in the spotlight in the past few years for its ambitious space missions.

It all began with the first Emirati astronaut, Hazza Al Mansoori, followed by the launch of the Hope Probe and then the next astronomical event – when the UAE became the first country in the Arab world to send an astronaut, this time Sultan Al Neyadi, to the International Space Station. We can without a doubt say that the UAE is currently sparkling on the space exploration front.

Over the summer, young curious minds with a similar love for space can do much more than run around with a fish bowl on their head, arms outstretched doing zoomies around the living room, as Louvre Abu Dhabi’s Children’s Museum has a pitstop that can’t be overshot.

From Tuesday July 18, Louvre Abu

Dhabi is inviting children ages six to 12 to experience the infinity of space in its Picturing the Cosmos exhibition. Running until June 2025, the exhibition will take little visitors on a journey through the cosmos through a variety of representations in art across time and cultures.

CULTURE // EXHIBITIONS
Photos: Getty Images and Department of Culture and TourismAbu Dhabi

The exhibition is one of many ways the UAE is igniting a spark in young children to inspire them to become the next generation of space explorers and scientists. During the exploration of this exhibition, expect a number of questions to be answered, including ‘Why have humans always been fascinated by the cosmos?’ and ‘How has the sky been a source of inspiration and imagination through ages?’

Cruise through the exhibition to see a number of interesting instruments used in ancient times, including an astrolabe (pictured top left) – a tool used to calculate the position of the sun, reckoning time and more. Although used a long time ago, the astrolabe is still in use by people today as part of learning astronomy. It’s also

useful to hikers when they can’t access GPS or cellular services. Other items on display include a celestial globe (pictured top right), which shows the apparent positions of the stars in the sky. The globes are still used by modern astronomers to find objects in the night sky, but, thanks to their visual appeal, also double up as dazzling ornaments. Throughout the exhibition, visitors will also find a number of century-old

paintings with depictions of constellations from around the globe.

Tickets to Louvre Abu Dhabi can be purchased on louvreabudhabi.ae and are priced at Dhs63 for adults. Children under 18 enter for free.

Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island, Abu Dhabi, open Tues to Thur 10am to 6.30pm, Fri and Say 10am to 8.30pm, closed Mon, until June 2025. Tel: (600) 565 566.

BIG SCREENS AND BIG STREAMS

Whether

you’re going hard at the box office or home to watch flicks and chill, there is some massive entertainment headed your way in July

This month, three box office monsters roll into town within a week of each other, squaring off over precious IMAX inch territory. But the battle for your attention takes on a home front too with some massive streaming debuts. Here are six big screen and big stream blockbusters dropping in July.

BIG SCREENS

Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One

Expected: July 13

If you’re an action movie fan, they don’t come much bigger or as frequently – as the films of the Mission Impossible franchise. And like the man who plays core protagonist Ethan Hunt (Tom Cruise), they only seem to be getting

better with age. Which is in no small part thanks to the emergence of Christopher McQuarrie as saga director. The sixth outing, Fallout was easily the best of the bunch for us, but gave us little clue what sort of direction, doublecrossing and Q-style gadgetry we could expect from the next two entries Dead Reckoning, Parts One and Two – which were shot back-to-back. Your mission dear reader, if you choose to accept it, is to wait patiently until it arrives in box offices on July 13.

Oppenheimer

Expected: July 20

This film has all the right periodic elements for a truly explosive release. Directed by Christopher Nolan (whose lowest rated, of nine, full length feature films currently sits at 7.2 on IMDB), starring Cillian Murphy in the titular role and a based-on-a-realstoryline that follows the ethically-fraught series of events behind the Manhattan Project, the race to master nuclear fission and “become Death, the destroyer of worlds”. After shaking the atomic genie out of the bottle, Oppenheimer famously spent the rest of his days lobbying against its use, and we couldn’t think of a better pairing (Nolan and Murphy) to smash that sort of internal conflict nucleus apart. Literally zero chance this bombs at the box office.

CULTURE // MOVIES AT HOME AND AWAY
44 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE

Barbie

Expected: July 20

Even after watching the trailer, we’re not entirely sure what sort of energy this big screen live-action Barbie movie is going to give. There are reasons to be hopeful, though. It has Greta Gerwig (Little Women, Lady Bird) directing and a cast that includes Margot Robbie as Barbie, Ryan Gosling as Ken, and support from Will Ferrell, America Ferrera, Michael Cera, Kate McKinnon and Helen Mirren. Not much is known about the plotline, but in the grand What’s On movie round up tradition we’ve got some predictions. We’re guessing that it’s going to be hyperself aware and full of running gags in the vein of frantic outfit changes, androgynous anatomy and ubiquity of the colour pink.

BIG STREAMS

Last Night in Soho

Expected: July 7, Netflix

This film snuck out whilst we were at the precarious peak of pandemic PCRing, so it never really got the audience figures it deserved. It comes from the mind of Three Flavours Cornetto trilogy collaborator Edgar Wright, stars Anya Taylor-Joy and tells the story of a young woman who, through her dreams, is able to travel back in time to London in the swinging sixties. It’s in one of these fits of retro reverie, where central protagonist Ellie (Thomasin McKenzie) becomes enamoured with beautiful club singer, Sandie (Taylor-Joy). Embroiled in the seedy under belly of Soho’s nightlife, it’s not long before Sandie disappears. Ellie uses what she’s learned from the past, to investigate the crime during the present, in hopes of unravelling a 60-year-old mystery.

Bluey

Expected: July 12, Disney+ If you’re a parent it is impossible, like, utterly **Princess Bride voice** inconceivable that you are unaware of the animated kid’s show, featuring the eponymous Australian Blue Heeler, Bluey. “You have to watch it” someone said to us at a barbecue a few months ago “it’s genuinely hilarious”. After that, more and more parents began turning in their unsolicited oral reviews, usually Aussies (they were the early adopters being Bluey Kabayans) and were never less than emphatic. It got to a point where not watching it just became an untenable position. We were missing out on so many in-jokes and impassioned discussions about just how much of an inferior father Bluey and Bingo’s dad makes you feel. Dear reader, this is up there with StoryBots and in the running for most enjoyable (for parents) kid’s show ever created. 5/5. And this July, we’re getting 10 fresh new episodes. Biscuits.

Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri

Expected: July 8, OSN+

Films from the playwright, screenwriter, producer, and director, Martin McDonagh don’t come around that often (unsurprising given the length of his job title), but when they do, they usually end up being regarded as cult classics. He’s the man behind In Bruges, Seven Psychopaths, and The Banshees of Inisherin – delicious, award-winning, black comedies and masterclasses in farce and social parody. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri isn’t new, it first came out in 2017 but it’s rereleasing on OSN this July and it absolutely needs to be on your watch list. It’s the story of a woman, pushed to breaking point by the inactivity of the sheriff’s office investigating the murder of her daughter. It’s fraught with racial tension and the core cast is legend tier.

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT:

Afshan Quraishi

46 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // ARTIST SPOTLIGHT

In a creative world currently facing a surge of AI art and NFT’s, it’s always refreshing to see beautiful works in traditional styles. Afshan Quraishi, an artist living in the UAE, is a purist whose signature style stands out for its delicate traditionalism.

Her love of art began at an early age, where she was mentored on the fundamentals by Azeez Azmi, a master of fine arts in her home town, Kurnool in Andhra Pradesh, India.

Quraishi hit the pause button for a couple of years on her creative license, but re-ignited her passion and picked up the brush to overcome empty nest syndrome, and she hasn’t looked back since.

Quraishi works in multi-media, but her preferred medium is oil on canvas, which allows her to showcase details and colours in her work. She also uses acrylics, pastels, water colours, charcoal and graded pencils when sketching. You may have spotted her works around the UAE at hotels, galleries and at a number of art festivals across the country, including Art Dubai and Ras Al Khaimah Art Festival. She has even made a name for herself abroad, exhibiting at the Florence Art Festival and Mauritius Art Festival. She is the recipient of a number of awards including, the Leonardo Da Vinci Artist Award (2018), Arab Cultural Art Award and more. Another accolade? She also holds a golden visa in the creative field and she tells What’s On that she is, “very grateful to the UAE government for the great honour.”

Her pieces also adorn the walls of royal homes around the UAE. This includes a portrait of the late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan – a painting Quraishi painted in 2018 to celebrate the Year of Zayed. “I feel so honoured that they found my art worthy enough to be a part of their art collection,” she says.

Her other eye-catching artworks showcase plenty of foliage and flowers, including her Flower Girl series. Quraishi holds a

Masters in Botanical Sciences, and her love for nature began during field trips where she had to observe the natural world. “The flowers, the leaves have such symbolic expressions in art form”, she explains.

With a passion for ensuring that each artwork comes with a rich narrative, she compares her art to a visual autobiography. “I strongly feel that my paintings are about the pleasure of seeing myself exploring and embracing the beauty that surrounds me,” Quraishi smiles.

Her favourite work is called ‘Umm’ or ‘Mom’ and depicts the range of emotions we as humans experienced in the pandemicthose of hope, despair, fear, acceptance and triumph.

Each one of the pieces, Quraishi tells us, is unique. She is influenced by her personal experiences and works by other artists, including renowned Indian artists Raja Ravi Verma and Sayed Haider Raza, whose work she says are the “best examples of European academic art with Indian sensibility.” In the UAE, she is also impressed by Emirati artists Fatma Lootah, Najat Makki and Abdul Qader Al Rais, whose work represents people and the culture of the UAE in their own unique styles.

When asked about her thoughts on the surge of AI art, she says, “artists need to be aware of the new trends and amalgamate it with the traditional ones.” She adds that, “pure art form and the generation of digital art can both grow and co-exist at the same time.”

In her spare time, Quraishi loves to read and regularly visits Alserkal Avenue. She is currently working on her next solo exhibition slated for December this year.

Want to keep up with the artist? Check out her social media feeds on @afshanquraishi or view her artworks on the afshanartgallery.com website

ASSALAAMU ALAIKUM,

Maldives

Showing you a side to this island archipelago that isn’t seen much atoll

Snap shots and tales of visitors who have ventured to the white sands and crystal-clear waters of the Maldives are enough to get anyone dreaming of booking a flight to this dazzling atoll network nation. As an archipelago of 1,190 coral islands in the Indian Ocean, you certainly won’t be lacking options. The fun begins with finding the right one for you. Research is key, and if you fancy following a path less often travelled, here are three less famous islands, each with their own unique charm and fully deserving of your attention.

58 JULY 2023 | WHATSON.AE TRAVEL // MALDIVES

MALÉ, MALDIVES

The capital of the Maldives located in the Kaafu Atoll is a spot you must visit, even if it is just for a day. Home to some prominent icons and landmarks, the city is packed with Maldivian culture and history. Here’s our top things to do.

Sultan Park

If you’ve thoroughly enjoyed a sumptuous feast of Creole cuisine for lunch and want to walk off the calories, head to Sultan Park. Built on the demolished grounds of the Royal Palace, you’ll be treated to a gorgeous green oasis. You’ll find it next to the Grand Friday Mosque.

Masjid-al-Sultan Muhammad Thakurufaanu Al Auzam

Next up, the Grand Friday Mosque – one of the biggest houses of worship in the whole of the Maldives. The impressive exteriors are made from grand white marble topped with a striking gold dome, while the inside showcases intricate ancient woodwork. Non-Muslims can enter the mosque relatively freely during its opening hours (arms and knees need to be covered), but access during prayer time is restricted.

Malé Fish Market

A visit to a fish market isn’t something you’d see on most Maldivian itineraries, but remember, fishing is the original lifeblood of this island nation and around 30 per cent of the population work in the fishing industry. Pay a quick visit and watch the catches of the day being hauled in and cleaned. It’s the closest you’ll get to experiencing the local life.

CROSSROADS MALDIVES

Home to spacious rooms,

over-water

studios and suites, each offers pristine views of the turquoise waters, the resorts are perfect for families, couples and even single travelers.

Away from your room, you’ll find a number of restaurants serving up various delicious dishes, spots to shop and spas. Want to travel between the islands? It’s walkable, but there are also buggies to shuttle you back and forth – perfect for when the little one’s feet are tired after a day of exploring.

If you just want to soak in the serenity, pick a sun lounger by the beach where you can enjoy sip on a drink, read a book or maybe take a nap under the sun.

FUVAHMULAH

For the more experienced swimmers and divers, (or if you are keen to learn how to take a plunge), Fuvahmulah should be on the top of your Maldives island bucket list. Located on the Gnaviyani Atoll, you will need to hop on a flight and head to the southern region of Maldives. Your flight will take you passed the equator, and to celebrate the occasion, you will receive a certificate complete with your name and flight details. It’s an occasion that has been celebrated for centuries by sailors and definitely a memory for the showcase. While you’re there, here are few extra must-dos…

Koda Kilhi

Get down and dirty with a mud bath in the wetland areas. Since the island is of volcanic origin, the mud is rich in minerals and is a relaxing and fun experience. To get to the natural mud bath requires a bit of trekking, but more importantly you need to watch where you step. We suggest going with a tour guide who will be able to take you to and from the mud bath safely.

Thoondu Beach

After your fun mud escapade, you can clean up in the shallow waters at Thoondu Beach. Located on the north of the island, the beach is famous with the locals and tourists for one unique feature: the white sand isn’t really sand at all, rather it is made of up coral pebbles. Sadly though, it is not recommended that you swim here as the currents are quite strong, but surfers can enjoy showing off their skills here in July and August.

Extreme Dive Fuvahmulah

At the five-star PADI dive centrecertified Extreme Dive Fuvahmulah, you can learn from the best with Extreme’s experienced and professional team. It features a 4.5 metre-deep swimming pool where you will practice breathing techniques, equalising, and all the important hand signals. The diving centre is stocked with all the necessary equipment for you to rent, so show up and give it a go.

Once the team thinks you’re ready it’s time to enjoy a tiger shark dive.

Tiger Shark Dive

The Extreme Dive Fuvahmulah team offers a number of dives each day (suitable weather conditions permitting). During your experience you are likely to come face-to-toothy-face with several different shark species along with other fascinating sea creatures. But you won’t be alone, as every dive is accompanied by the experienced diving centre team. Non-swimmers are welcome to stay on the boat and enjoy spotting plenty of marine life from above.

Caesars Palace Dubai

The What’s On Awardwinning staycation packs a punch when it comes to dining, leisure and relaxation.

LOCATION

The only hotel on Bluewaters Island, Caesars Palace is a luxurious resort that unfurls along a 1.7km stretch of beach. Divided between two towers – Julius and Palace – in the middle you’ll find Cove Beach, a hedonistic beach club that regularly draws a glamorous crowd.

LOOK AND FEEL

Distinctly contemporary, with regal touches everywhere you look, Caesars Palace is inspired by the Roman Empire, and it wants to ensure guests are treated like royalty too. Intricate paintings in the lobby, ornate statues in the immaculately maintained grounds and geometric print carpets give a modern, palatial touch to an otherwise minimalistic aesthetic.

ROOMS

We check-in to a sumptuously spacious sea view suite in the Palace building, where the regal aesthetic remains ever-present, yet impressively understated. Shades of smart slate grey and expensive-looking light woods are enhanced with amenities that include branded beach bags, foothugging slippers and a walk-in wardrobe. A pillow menu, Acqua di Parma bathroom

amenities, and dining area where locally inspired treats are left at turndown are thoughtful features that instantly impress.

FACILITIES

This resort is a playground for adults and children alike. No less than five swimming pools include an offering exclusive for families, which we swerve in favour of afternoons at Amalfi-inspired Venus and the playful Neptune pool. Venus, part-restaurant, and part-beach club is a colourful iteration of the best bits of the Italian seaside, with a pleasant menu of crowd-pleasing Italian dishes. A relaxed Saturday brunch allows guests to experience both, with a set menu in the restaurant followed by pool access. Neptune, with its monochrome striped loungers, bubblegum pink towels and exceptional service is the perfect place for a pool day. While the choice of music may be a little confusing, the menu of grazing bites that includes sushi, sandwiches, pizzas and an extensive cocktail list is the perfect accompaniment to an afternoon of tan-topping.

FOOD AND DRINK

There’s a dozen restaurants split across the main hotel and Julius tower, and guests are encouraged to create their own gastronomic adventure by dining across both. An allencompassing breakfast buffet at Bacchanal is a suitably overthe-top affair for the Vegas-born brand, where breakfast classics sit comfortably alongside a buffet of sushi, pizza and even a chocolate fountain.

A la carte experiences at Caesars Palace come with some starry credentials behind them, such as Hell’s Kitchen, a British restaurant inspired by the hit Gordon Ramsay TV show. Decked out in hues of bright red and blue, the menu is a collection of British classics that include the signature beef Wellington, alongside upscale additions like delicate seared scallops to start (Dhs150) and a sizzling chateaubriand for two (Dhs650) that melts effortlessly in the mouth. Another celebrity chef led eatery you won’t want to miss is the dimly lit and smartly decorated Chinese restaurant Demon Duck, brainchild of larger-than-life chef Alvin Leung. The star dish here? Unsurprisingly, the slow-roasted, 14-day aged demon duck (Dhs690), carved tableside for added wow-factor.
