A BYPRODUCT OF WORKING AT WHAT’S ON…

… is that you become the go-to person for recommendations for everyone in your contacts list. It might be for a close friend, a friend of a friend that’s visiting from out of town, or that person you exchanged numbers with at brunch five years ago. It might be for ideas on a sweet new breakfast spot, the city’s best burger, or a new restaurant that’s sure to wow visitors. Regardless of the person or occasion, I’m the one everyone turns to.

But I’m lucky to have the expertise of tens of thousands of in-the-know experts behind my recommendations. Because now, when I’m next asked for my thoughts on where someone should go, I can simply direct them to the winners of the What’s On Abu Dhabi Awards 2023. After votes were cast in record breaking numbers, the leading lights of the city’s leisure and hospitality scene gathered last month for a dazzling evening of celebration at W Abu Dhabi –Yas Island. On the night, gongs were awarded to an array of worthy winners covering everything from restaurants and food concepts to leisure and entertainment, whose patrons firmly believe are the best in the business. Join us in congratulating them from p15.

On the subject of business, we’re getting straight down to it on p29, with Abu Dhabi’s best business lunches. From elegant French restaurants to homegrown eateries with views of the ocean, let these spots ensure you get that next deal over the line.

Enjoy the issue,

Checking out one of DIFC’s chic new spots… Alaya

It’s been a few months since elegant Middle Eastern restaurant Alaya made its debut, but I finally got to check it out. With influences from the Mediterranean and Orient, highlights include the yellowtail crudo, grilled tiger prawns and wagyu tenderloin from the rotisserie.

Making the drive down to… Saadiyat Golf Club

I’m not a big golfer. Sure I’ve dabbled in the past, but I don’t have the patience to make it a frequent habit. Driving range sessions are different though and the nicest place I’ve ever swung a club in is Saadiyat Beach Golf Club. Wild antelope roaming free, turquoise seas on the horizon and a stunning 19th hole offering. It’s paradise, enhanced by a walk.

Making my very own candle with… ARTFem

Over the past weekend, we hosted one of our famous Lock-In events with Vida Dubai Marina and Yacht Club. In the morning of the event, ARTFem hosted a candle-making class. While I don’t consider myself an artist, I had so much fun painting the pot, choosing my scent and waiting for my candle to set.

Learning to make kimchi with…Tabchilli

One of my favourite things in the world is kimchi – its acidic crunches light up a fire inside me, and I always find a way to add it to most of my meals. I had the pleasure of attending a workshop at Tabchilli, run by owner Maher. He walked us through the fermentation process, and then we made our own kimchi and chilli paste to take home.

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Shef Codes

We ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes, their favourite places, hidden gems, must-have products and local brands they love. This month, DJ, content creator and self-proclaimed wannabe food critic, Shef Codes (@mrshefcodes) gives us the lowdown on local brands he is loving right now and the favourite spots that his extensive 28 years worth of UAE living has brought him.

As much as I love living in Dubai, sometimes I need to escape the fast-paced life. There are a few hotels that I’ve been blessed to experience, namely Nikki Beach Dubai and Nurai Island but my favourite is The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert in Ras Al Khaimah – I like to keep an eye out for the wildlife.

I’ve had a lot of family and friends down in Dubai lately. After living here for a while, I think the best place to show them is old Dubai. We take a walk around Al Bastakiya and the Creek, followed by lunch at Ustad Special Kebab and tea from a local café. I also love to head down to Rabbash in Mamza and order the tea.

I’m loving the current food scene in Dubai, but if I had to pick, I’d have to say Honeycomb Hi-Fi. Everything about the space is very well curated from the vinyl and books out in front, to the music and DJs.

My go-to will always be Amongst Few for everyday classics but I’m always on the lookout for interesting streetwear brands, including Dayo Community and Daymares. In the luxury space, Bougessa has done some interesting silhouettes for men that I have saved in my wish list.

CHOICE

“It

How would you describe the dining scene at Al Qana?

Abu Dhabi has a strong local market. We get families, government officials and youngsters. It will definitely grow into a much more popular dining hub as time goes on. When people visit Otoro, what do you hope is their lasting impression?

Our concept is chic casual but our product is of the highest quality. We don’t copy cat and what you get in Otoro is a signature of our own brand. It’s a destination and most importantly when they leave, we want them to feel they had a wonderful experience and they’ll bring new friends and family the next time.

THOMAS GREGGORY

“We

When people visit 99 Sushi, what do you hope is their lasting impression?

When a guest dines at 99, we hope they will have that “wow” moment that makes a meal unforgettable. We want them to remember a flavour transformed into a long lasting emotion.

What one dish should everyone order at 99 Sushi?

I would say the wagyu katsusando: the combination of flavours, the Japanese BBQ sauce with mustard and black pepper, the tenderness of the meat. It’s the perfect Japanese sandwich.

Describe Abu Dhabi’s dining scene in three words… Vibrant. Competitive. Diverse.

A WORD WITH OUR WINNERS...

STINGA

“It is a very humbling experience for us to win Restaurant of the Year Abu Dhabi 2023...”

How has the restaurant added to the culinary scene?

Maté is a unique addition to the Abu Dhabi culinary scene in terms of cuisine concept. It has been described by our guests as distinctive, vibrant and a warmhearted culinary and lifestyle experience. It has become a dining destination within the Park Hyatt.

When people visit Maté, what do you hope is their lasting impression?

Most of the guests come to Maté for the food, stay for the drinks and ambiance and they come back for the unpretentious yet sophisticated service.

Do you have a standout moment from the awards?

To be rewarded with two recognitions with Restaurant of the Year and Favourite Italian Restaurant. We could not be prouder of our achievements and grateful for all the support that we have received so far.

When people visit Talea, what do you hope is their lasting impression?

I always hope that guests will leave our restaurant with memories of Italian home-style cooking.

What one dish should everyone order?

This is a difficult one to answer. I would say at least spaghetti al nerano, gnocchi al ragu bianco and tiramisu because as Italians we never order only one dish.

From its stunning suites and villas to the brand-new luxury pool and beach club, here’s our guide to Abu Dhabi’s iconic destination

WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

24 APRIL 2023 | WHATSON.AE

For long-time Abu Dhabi residents, the Armed Forces Officers Club & Hotel is legendary, both as a key landmark, and as one of the oldest surviving family-friendly destinations in the capital. In 2021, a new chapter began and the club was renovated and rebranded. While its values and ethos as a beloved family attraction remain, there’s now even more to see and do. Here’s everything you need to know about Erth Abu Dhabi…

THE HOTEL ROOMS MINIMALIST MAGIC AND SUITES ARE

Erth Abu Dhabi’s elegant yet understated accommodation features 237 rooms, 42 suites and 13 villas each incorporating locally sourced natural materials and embracing muted sand tones. The one-bedroom villas in particular are fantastic with a spacious layout and private beach access right from your door. A deluxe king room starts at Dhs1,151, while a one-bedroom villa costs Dhs4,632 per night.

AL RIMAL LEANS TOWARDS RESTAURANT EMIRATI CUISINE

Staying true to its Emirati heritage, Al Rimal – meaning sands – serves a carefully curated menu inspired by Emirati cuisine. Its distinct buffet zones and live show kitchens offer various delicacies, including Arabic bread, mezze and traditional desserts. Elsewhere at Erth you’ll find Ramsa whipping up authentic street food from around the world, a Neapolitan pizzeria brilliantly named Beetza, and Asrah, the new beach club’s poolside restaurant. Still to come: a retro souk, a beachside restaurant, and a grab ‘n’ go outlet.

ERTH ABU DHABI WHATSON.AE | APRIL 2023 25

THE THEATRE STAGES PLAYS, PERFORMANCES PANTOS AND MUSICAL

We’ve been fans of Theatre by Erth ever since they staged a fantastic Motown night back in May 2022. The enormous 631-seater auditorium has become one of the key destinations for family-friendly shows, including festive pantomimes, edutainment, and retro tribute bands. Keep an eye on theatrebyerth.com for upcoming shows.

THE FITNESS FACILITIES ARE MEGA

The exceptional Etizan Fitness comprises a 3,500 sqm gym with both mixed and female-only areas housing next-generation TechnoGym equipment. You’ll also find an eight-lane, indoor, Olympicsized pool, a range of artificial and natural, outdoor pitches from five-a-side to an 11-a-side pitch. (Referee services, as well as boot and ball rental are also available). There are dedicated spaces for everything from gymnastics to squash, padel tennis, regular tennis, spinning, bowling, track and field, volleyball, basketball, and Jiu Jitsu. Memberships start at Dhs2,999 for four months.

CAFÉ REVIEW: SOCIETY ABU DHABI, MAMSHA AL SAADIYAT

Remember that kid at school that was good at everything? Beloved by teachers and pupils, just a joy to be around? That’s Saadiyat Island. It’s sporty (just check out the stunning Saadiyat Beach Golf Club); popular and heartbreakingly handsome (it was recently awarded the Middle East’s Best Beach destination for the 11th year running); it’s great with animals (wild dolphins, turtles, and gazelle); it’s broodingly deep and cultural (see the present and future galleries and museums of the cultural district) and boy oh boy, can it cook.

The foodie strip of Mamsha Al Saadiyat features gastronomic influence from practically every culinary quarter of the globe, and in accordance with the unofficial

Abu Dhabi coffee constitution, the café culture is served in a 31-ounce ‘trenta’ jumbo mug. Society was a late addition to the Mamsha strip, an import from Dubai’s Jumeirah. And if the OG café is a stone’s throw from the beach, this Saadiyat stronghold is a stone’s drop. The lapiz island sea is in point-blank vicinity, and its eye-shot view gives the alfresco seating a fairytale backstory.

It’s midday, the unhindered sun is directly overhead and we’re in the mood for something light but filling, from somewhere between the Middle East and the Mediterranean. Our waitress is kind and unflappable, and wading through our indecision with an experienced stride, she calmly recommends a pepperoni flatbread (Dhs62). “Is it spicy though? We really fancy something spicy”. Off the back of assurances that it is indeed spicy, we lock in the recommendation and order a sugary peach ice tea to go with it. Whilst waiting for the food, we wander through the restaurant interior – like its Dubai sister, it

shares a passion for creative curve and trim applications of the Art Deco design palette. It’s a beautiful, expansive café and we’re told, particularly prized for its breakfast menu.

Back at the table the flatbread, basically the bungalow of the pizza world, is waiting for us. It’s characterised by rustic bready tones, the faint hint of exotic spice in the meaty topping (cumin? Anise?), but the deliberate lack of fluffy depth to the base, means that for us, this still-majestic mouthful, probably plays second fiddle to other pizza species in the neighbourhood.

WHAT’S ON

Mamsha

on

The peach ice tea (Dhs30) is the real rave discovery. It’s a rabbit hole infusion of fruity nectar and herbal tea, perfect sipping fodder for a warm and sunny day by the beach (and fortunately, they do get a few of those on Saadiyat Island).

Mamsha Al Saadiyat, Saadiyat Island, 8pm to 11pm (midnight on Friday and Saturday).

We’ll certainly be back to explore more of the menu, and to reorder that peach ice tea.

IFTAR REVIEW: CORNICHE ALL DAY DINING

Sofitel Abu Dhabi

Corniche goes big for iftar

An undeniably important aspect of Ramadan is reconnecting with family and friends by breaking fast together. Over the years, Abu Dhabi’s restaurant scene has reworked, reimagined and refined its iftar offerings

to a point where we can largely group these evening Ramadan feasts into two categories: a la carte or buffet spectacle.

Corniche All Day Dining at the iconic Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche is firmly in the latter camp, serving an enormous buffet of Middle Eastern dishes, a barbecue and shawarma station and traditional juices everyday throughout the month of Ramadan.

If it’s your first time in the hotel, iftar here is hard to miss. Simply follow the soothing sounds of a live oud player, who roams around the dining hall with a huge smile on his face.

Diners are treated to a buffet of dishes complete with all the staples you’d expect during Ramadan. We start with a plate of mezze: hummus, a nutty muhammara, and a halloumi salad all displayed on colourful Moroccan-style

platters. We then swiftly make our way to the barbecue station, overloading on charred prawns before snagging all the juicy bits from the chicken shawarma stand. Finally, we go hard on the two showstoppers: whole lamb ouzi and the biggest tray of mansaf we’ve ever seen – both a delight to eat. These two platters are well worth space in your bellies, so resist filling up on mezze.

The desserts, meanwhile, are great to share. The traditional Arabic sweets and cookies may be a little too sweet for naïve palates, but the goblet of tiramisu is a unanimous hit with its smooth, soothing and pillowy texture. Sure, it’s not so in keeping with the Middle Easternfocused feast we’ve enjoyed thus far, but that’s the joy of buffets –the choice is limitless.

Sofitel Abu Dhabi Corniche, 6.30pm to 9.30pm, Dhs265 per person.

PATRIK HAVLICEK

Executive Chef at Khalidiya Palace Rayhaan by Rotana hotel, Abu Dhabi

My dad was a chef, so having a role model in the industry naturally inspired me to pursue a career in the culinary arts. I first discovered my passion for cooking at a very young age, and I believe that becoming a chef takes dedication, hard work and a love for the craft.

The best chef I worked for was Chef Terry Styles, an Australian who was my mentor early on in my career. We first met in Jumeirah Al Qasr hotel and again at Atlantis, The Palm. I also admire my dad, who continues to inspire me.

My favourite restaurant is Atmosphere in Dubai. Their head chef is my friend who was a former commis in Atlantis. The progress that he has made from cutting vegetables to creating fabulous dishes in one of the top restaurants in the world is incredible.

My biggest influences are travel and culture. Exposure to different cultures and cuisines throughout my travels inspires interesting cooking as well as a desire to learn more about different types of cuisines. One of my favourite local ingredients is halloumi cheese. Which restaurant makes the best pizza? I cannot recommend Dino’s Italian restaurant in Pearl Rotana enough as the best pizza.

REVIEW: Lighthouse

An ideal choice for a busy day at Yas Bay

When this popular eatery first launched in Dubai, we heard nothing but great things. So when the restaurant expanded to the capital, we were keen to check it out. Since then, the outlet has gone on to win the hearts of many Abu Dhabi residents and even walked away with the award for Favourite Mediterranean Restaurant at the What’s On Abu Dhabi Awards 2023.

Located in Yas Bay, Lighthouse isn’t your conventional restaurant. Conceived by Hashem Montasser and Hany Bassiouny, the brand blends a gastro-dining experience with a boutique retail space. Diners have an expansive menu that includes soups, salads, sandwiches, burgers, pizzas and desserts.

We start with a red lentil soup (Dhs38), which we relish for its earthy flavour and hint of heat from the chilli oil. The fried bite-sized prawns (Dhs72), slathered in a delicious creamy kimchi mayo, came next, which we favoured over the fried calamari (Dhs64) which, though flavourful, became a little

chewy after spending a while at the table.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

With plenty of other dishes to try, there’s no doubt we will be back.

The gnocchi (Dhs104) arrive slightly charred, although this didn’t translate to the palate, with a pillowy texture that melts in the mouth. The sweet tomato sauce and gooey burrata cheese instantly reminds us of a delicious home-cooked comfort meal. To satisfy our seafood cravings, the buttery, smoky grilled salmon fillet (Dhs132) is perfectly flaky and served on a bed of green beans and okra in tomato sauce.

For dessert, we struggle to pick between the vast options of tiramisu, saffron milk cake, French toast and more, but choose a light chocolate raspberry and mascarpone tart (Dhs43). Each bite was a burst of sweetness, from the beautifully homemade whipped cream cheese, tart raspberries, crumbly tart and rich chocolate filling.

YES WAY, JOSÉ

Discover outstanding Spanish cusine at José by Pizarro

Recently, What’s On was handed the extraordinary privilege of being the first media outlet to be given a venue tour and introduction to the menu of José by Pizarro. The restaurant opened on Friday March 17 at the magnificent Conrad Abu Dhabi Etihad Towers, and is a regional first from Spanish superstar chef ‘yes way’ José Pizarro. Known as the ‘Godfather of Spanish Cuisine’, Chef José is making a culinary offer, us as discerning Abu Dhabi diners, would be unwise to refuse.

As well as an exciting collection of very honestly priced sharing tapas, there are more substantial mains arriving

from Spain (although not on a plane, a huge quantity of the ingredients have been deliberately sourced from premium local suppliers). We tried the chicken paella, and it really genuinely is one of the best things we’ve tasted in the last 12 months. And there’s a strong synergy between Spanish and Arabian food, not least because of shared threads of heritage. As early as the eighth century, Arab settlers have occupied significant swathes of the Iberian mainland, with influences on language, place names, architecture and food – still poetically observable today. And what is tapas if not mezze with a sultry Spanish accent?

EAT // INTERVIEW

IN CONVERSATION WITH JOSÉ PIZARRO

What’s On: You’ve already achieved incredible success in the UK, have any British influences crept into your menu here?

José Pizarro: I’ve been in the UK for 24 years now, but no, not really. I make food to please people, it’s about my customers, my friends. But in my Spanish restaurants, I don’t try to do anything that’s not Spanish. I always wanted a pub, because pubs are like a tapas bar — you can go for a quick drink, some croquetas, and then go. It’s a place for community. For friendship, and very good for a date. And in my pub, I do fish and chips, and I’m doing my Scotch egg, but in my restaurant — you’re coming for Spanish cuisine and I think it has so much diversity that you really don’t need anything else.

WO: What would be your ‘death row’ meal?

JP: OK, it’s something I used to hate when I was a child but, lentils. My mum makes the best lentils in the world. With different types of meat, it just really takes me back and I cannot adjust the flavour. And I think kitchens and restaurants are about memories. Life is about memories. And even though I didn’t like it, that smell takes me back, it reminds me of being in bed whilst my mum was cooking. It’s weird, but it’s true. And definitely I would have a chocolate pot, I love chocolate.

WO: Not a Pot Noodle (a sort of British instant ramen) then?

JP: [Laughs] That is my guilty food pleasure. It’s different, here this is my last meal — so it’s important. I would also like to eat a really lovely roast, the sort I would eat with my mum and dad for celebrations. The baby goat, it’s very simple recipe. Just really amazing meat, with onions and peppers the sort my mother dries, and wine, and bay leaf and water. My mum doesn’t use stock. Smoked paprika, fried potatoes. WO: We can almost smell it now.

JP: Because it’s real. It’s real life, and the last meal has to have memories. WO: Are there any local flavours that you were excited to include in your menu here?

JP: I think because there is a lot of shared culture, you know with the Middle East and Spain. So a lot of the ingredients, the flavours are already in my menus. And I’m looking forward to

discovering many more new things, because really – this country [the UAE] is amazing, the diversity, the culture for example. And we talked before, when we were cooking about supporting local suppliers and using the farm here at Conrad, which by the way, being able to get there and pick up a lettuce in the morning, in a hotel, in the desert — is incredible.

WO: One of our local dishes here, a very popular street food dish — the Schwannoma, which is like a kebab. If you were going to ‘Pizarro-fy’ it, what would you do to kind of give it the José flavour?

JP: Paprika, it’s always been a part of my life. And extra virgin olive oil. Smokiness, peppery, I really think it would work.

WO: That literally sounds incredible. Thank you so much José.

The concept is Louvre Abu Dhabi’s way of breaking down the barriers that prevent people from discovering art. A replica of Leonardo da Vinci’s famed portrait of Mona Lisa isn’t the only painting you will see. There are eight famous historical artists that have been showcased in Salt Camp’s food and art journey, including Vincent Van Gogh and Salvador Dali. On the menu, guests can pick from

a variety of fries, grilled corn, and delicious burgers including wagyu, truffle steak, buffalo chicken and more. Sweet treats include cinnamon rolls, cookie sundaes and chocolate affogato. For drinks, there’s lemonade to quench your thirst, but the decadent hot chocolate is a must-try for cocoa fans.

Diners can also expect culturally inspired live performances on an elevated stage and ‘roaming’ art works. There are sand art workshops available for the little ones and you can get a non-permanent tattoo at the henna tent. Meanwhile, shoppers can make a pitstop at the Salt store for fashion pieces designed in collaboration with the Louvre Abu Dhabi.

The founders, Deem al Bassam and Amal al Marri, commented, “Art and culture are at the heart of everything we do at Salt. We believe in pushing the boundaries of traditional artistic expression and finding new ways to connect our community through shared experiences. Our latest endeavour is all about celebrating the beauty of the simple things in life and bringing people together for an immersive, artistic cultural experience that you won’t soon forget.”

ARTIST SPOTLIGHT: 44 APRIL 2023 | WHATSON.AE

The photos seen on this page could very well be images conjured up from your dreams – where architectural design meets creative playful art touches. The creators behind these works are Victor Nouman and Eugenio Fernandez, the owners and digital artists of Dunes Studio. Besides doing professional projects for clients and brands, they are also architects, working on projects in Dubai and Spain. Their passion is vividly clear in the fun creations they share on their Instagram account, Utopic Arabia – a name that represents the borderline between the real and the imagination. “We are creating a utopia world inspired by Arabia.” Nouman tells What’s On

Sharing the moment they conceived the concept, Fernandez tells us, “We started one day in a café in Jumeirah, just for fun, but we realised the potential of the concept and started exploring it more and more”. The artists are largely inspired by Middle Eastern culture, traditions, and architecture. “As architects, we get inspiration from the places we visit and we use our art to create new stories about these places,” he continued.

In their creations, there is always a desert landscape and rural villages mixed with futuristic elements like inflatable architecture. “This is when the magic happens,” we’re told. The images are created using a mixture of techniques. The duo uses photographs they’ve captured around the Middle East and create a unique 3D effect after preliminary sketches.

While Dubai is packed with plenty of popular architectural wonders, from the Burj Khalifa, Museum of the Future, and Burj Al Arab, Nouman and Fernandez are more inclined to the somewhat unknown. “We are attracted to lost villages in the middle of the desert or small traditional markets or tea houses.” The artists prefer remote destinations, thanks to the potential for them to be reimagined, which creates a brand new identity.

“We came to the UAE for a project six years ago, but then we decided to stay here. There are a lot of opportunities, and we really like the vibes of the city and the mix of cultures,” we’re told. Though the UAE is a central focus, it’s not the only country that attracts the attention of the two architects. They’ve also been known to inject their fun colourful touches to Oman, Saudi Arabia, and Bahrain.

Their favourite artwork series is the collection of small pavilions in deserted villages. “It has a lot of reference to traditional architecture but is also related to the passage of time and memories.” The ‘camel ATM’ is another favourite, loved for its funny nature.

Outside of work, the duo love going for short trips to soak in nature in Al Ain, Hatta and sometimes even Oman, but they also love Dubai for its growing cultural programme specifically art and music. If you love Utopic Arabia’s work, keep your eyes peeled as you will soon be able to purchase prints and NFTs and see their work in a local art gallery. The duo shared that as architects they want to explore the idea of creating larger physical installations where people can interact with the artworks in different ways. It’s a project we are sure will go viral in no time. You can keep up with the duo and their fun creations on Instagram via @utopicarabia

WHAT’S ON: IN CONVERSATION WITH, FAST X DIRECTOR LOUIS LETERRIER

In the build up to the release of the tenth and final instalment in the Fast and Furious saga, we sit down with the film’s director

It’s one of the longest running, most dearlycherished franchises in cinema history, but the Fast and Furious saga will be screeching to a halt very soon. After dumping a gallon of celluloidal nos into the tank, we’ve somehow torn through nine movies of the main storyline, and for this next installment – Fast X (due to hit cinemas in May), what will almost certainly be the penultimate film in the series – legendary action director Louis Leterrier sits in the driver’s seat for the first time. Leterrier is the director behind the first two Transporter movies, Clash of the Titan, Now You See Me and Unleashed – a CV so explosively fisticuffs and cheeky humourladen that it almost makes him overqualified for joining the F&F family.

So sit down, buckle up, and prepare to live one quarter mile at a time...

What’s On: Hello, Louis. This movie is intended to be the beginning of the end for the Fast and Furious saga, how does it feel to be in control of the concluding act to one of the most beloved dynasties in contemporary cinema.

Louis Leterrier: It’s daunting. It’s even more daunting because I’m the biggest fan of the franchise. My first movie, with my main actor, we went to see a film at the end of a day’s shooting, and that movie was Fast and Furious, we loved it so much. And I remember saying ‘this is amazing, we have to do something like this, we need to make our movie that fun, and humorous’. So my movie was The Transporter, and the guy sitting next to me was Jason Statham.

48 APRIL 2023 | WHATSON.AE CULTURE // FILM
Vin Diesel and Louis Leterrier

That experience defined my life and his, and for both of us to now be in the franchise, and that I get to direct it. It just feels surreal. You have to understand, the concept of family in the franchise – is real, and powerful – on screen and off. The crew welcomed me into this family, I’m not the distant French cousin, I’m the brother. We’re so lucky to have Vin [Diesel] as the producer on this because he knows the franchise so well. It’s very comforting to be part of it, I’ve never been part of something like this, usually, I’m building things from scratch, but this family has lived together for a quarter of a century.

WO: Your filmography includes some genuinely incredible fight scenes, car chases and well-measured humour, it just fits in so well with the F&F saga, it almost feels like manifest destiny that you’re now apart of it, right?

LL: It’s gravitational pull, we attracted each other – they borrowed from my movies, and I was inspired by some of theirs. I’ve flirted with directing films in the franchise before, and then with this one, just to be trusted in finishing this, one of the most loved series in the world, it’s a true honour and I take it with all the weight and responsibility that was given to me.

WO: And so, you’re working with Jason Statham again, he’s a known entity, but in this movie we’ve also got new faces, Jason Momoa and Brie Larson, what do they as actors bring to the series?

LL: What’s beautiful about the franchise, is that it’s always been so diverse and the parity between men and women has been respected from the beginning. There’s always been as many female leads as male leads, and never forced. Brie brings another very strong female character, she’s a little bit more mysterious, she’s the secret family member of somebody we know well. The women in the franchise have traditionally grounded Dom, Brie’s more like a guardian angel.

Jason [Momoa] is the opposite, he brings chaos, on and off screen – the man is like a three-ring circus, he’s loud, he laughs, he’s brash, he’s fun – there’s always music when he acts and I’m like “can you turn it off”. He’s like my twin, my giant jolly twin, and he brings that and it’s needed to bring a different, chaotic energy to the series – and it’s quite the opposite to Dom’s. And it’s nice that you noticed about the humour in my filmography, I love mixing tones and genres, Jason Momoa helped with this – chaos, darkness and levity. And importantly, he’s a racer, I wanted cars to be the centrepiece of the movie, practical effects, humans, family characters, these were my goals for this film, but also the end of the franchise.

Fast X is set to arrive in UAE cinemas this May.

TREATMENT OF THE MONTH

Go for gold

Singing bowls, sand therapy and a soothing touch at The Pearl Spa

Life in Abu Dhabi can be tense. We stiffen with hectic drives across town. We hunch over laptops all day long, and sit through stressful meetings, often topping it off by slumping over our phones to scroll through pictures of our pals on holiday.

Even if we find time in our days for an hour or two of fun or the endorphin hit of a sweaty exercise class, we still have tight muscles, overactive minds and shoulders in need of soothing.

Enter The Pearl Spa in Four Seasons Hotel Abu Dhabi to alleviate it all. While there are quite a few places to get a massage in the UAE, there are far fewer places to experience the joy of gold quartz healing. At this award-winning spa you give it a go by opting for the 90-minute signature treatment (Dhs890). It’s excellent. The high-

tech quartz bed is topped with warm sand, which you lie on top of over a sheet. This type of hot sand therapy was initially used in Ancient Egypt to help treat a number of ailments, including easing muscle aches, pains and chronic inflammation. It’s also known to help stimulate lymphatic flow and detoxify the body. The quartz conducts infrared energy, delivering a more intense warmth.

The treatment begins with a personal singing bowls session where gentle gongs send vibrations throughout our body to help balance and restore our energy flow. This is followed by a gentle massage using a signature oil blend of white fig and zaatar while

being cocooned in heated quartz sand. This isn’t a treatment that involves aggressively pummelling out knots; rather, it focuses on easing you into a deep chilled-out state through a firm, flowing movement from head to toe. The journey ends on your back, eye masked up for a delightful marma point face therapy – an ayurvedic treatment where certain energy points are lightly pressed to help release tension and stimulate circulation. We’re left feeling fully regenerated, rebalanced, and dare we say it, radiant.

Afterwards, head to a dimly lit relaxation room for a steaming cup of tea and some nibbles, or take a dip in the hydrotherapy pools and let the calming effects of your treatment really sink in. The drive home can wait.

What could you do in four days? Learn to juggle. Renovate your bathroom. Binge watch the entire compilation of FRIENDS. What if you could change your life? It started as a simple postfestive pick-me-up trip to SHA Wellness Clinic in Spain. You know the ones: a few days off sugar, fried food and caffeine, and replacing them with restrictive food and drink, massages, rest and new-fangled therapies served up within a famous medical clinic that combines eastern and western philosophies. As it turns out, in four days I got all of this… and a lot more.

I found myself on the Rebalance programme – an amusebouche of what SHA has to offer. In addition to the medical benefits of each stay, guests also enjoy hospitality equivalent to a five-star luxury resort. Set into Alicante’s Sierra Helada mountains, SHA’s architectural curves, and clean white interior aesthetic give it the elusive cool of a billionaire’s mansion… or an infirmary onboard the Death Star. Most of the clinic’s exclusive guests are here for a week or more, and although weight loss is the number-one reason people come to SHA, there are other programmes here, including healthy ageing, optimal weight and detox.

All programmes begin with a medical check-up and nutritionist appointment. You’ll discuss physical changes, family history, current ailments and agree on a correction course for your stay. New to the clinic is a pioneering advanced preventive diagnosis circuit. Operated within a super advanced Health Screening Lab, the circuit consists of different stations where the team carry out a battery of non-invasive medical tests aimed at obtaining as much information as possible about the current state of health of each person. Simply put, it involves dressing down to your undies, then standing and spinning around on machines for a highly detailed body composition. It also provides data on certain parameters, such as stress resistance, balance between the sympathetic and parasympathetic systems and body position, which do not appear in standard analyses. Results appear on your individual profile on the SHA Wellness app, along with your highly curated schedule organised through your personal agenda manager.

followed by small pots featuring healthy bites such as porridge, aduki beans hummus and a pear compote all in borrower-sized portions. Detox teas also make up a huge part of the nutrition here, with a spectacular apple tea thickened with kuzu – a natural anti-inflammatory root starch – served every night.

After four days, my skin is shining, my brain feels abuzz with creativity, and I’ve just bought my first-ever tubs of kuzu and collagen powder. With one last appointment with the GP, we put a plan in place to continue my detox journey over the next few months at home. When I arrived at SHA, I walked past the fully stocked ‘pharmacy’ selling its natural remedies to better health. “Slim chance I’m going in there”, I scoffed inwardly. But how wrong I was. In four days, my mindset completely changed. I headed home with a positive outlook on my weight loss journey and supplements duly stuffed in my suitcase. And my jeans fit better, too.

Thus ensues four full days of appointments and therapies. SHA’s approach to wellbeing is famously thorough and I sampled almost 20 different treatments, from yoga and meditation to acupuncture and cupping, and deep tissue to Indiba (noninvasive radio-frequency therapy). The best of these was a mix of water therapy and shiatsu – affectionately termed ‘watsu’, which involved being swayed around a dimly-lit body-temperature-controlled pool, while gently held by an otherworldly practitioner, for 50 minutes of ego-evaporating bliss. With your free time, you can hit the gym or relax beside the stunning infinity pool, which gives off swanky Dubai beach club vibes (minus the electro dance beats and roving saxophonist).

Rebalance four-day programmes start at Dhs7,850. For more info, visit shawellnessclinic.com

Days go by in a flash as you live and die by the schedule on your app, floating along the shiny white corridors in your activewear or bathrobe. It’s like being away on an adult summer camp, but instead of mingling with hormonal teenagers, you’re rubbing shoulders with the world’s wealthiest, and instead of scavenger hunts and raft building, you’re re-building a better you.

But all of this would be futile if the food was bad, or worse, bland. Thankfully, the dietary concept is surprisingly delicious: chef Andres Moran runs a macrobiotic regime rich in grains, legumes and vegetables (no sugar, eggs, meat or dairy). Breakfasts begin with miso soup (excellent for detoxing), swiftly

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is an unashamedly palatial oasis, a true ‘sand castle’ overlooked on all sides by towering dunes.

LOCATION

The journey to Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is an incantation, it’s part of the resort’s spell, contributing in no small part to the experiential sense of exclusivity and secluded allure. It’s two hours from Downtown Abu Dhabi (and three hours from Dubai), along desert roads that chase an ocean of rising and crashing sand through the Empty Quarter. And at night, free from light pollution and air particulates, the sky is a sequinned robe of burning stars. Truly a humbling sight.

LOOK AND FEEL

UAE desert hotels represent some of the most spectacular ‘getting-away-from-it-all’ vacation opportunities available anywhere in the world. They’re a rare breed, in scenery and in the level of juxtaposition between home and holiday. And Qasr Al Sarab is perhaps the truest archetype of these sorts of resort. The line in the sand between it and other similar properties, is one of extent, quality and range.

ROOMS

This desert chateau holds 140 rooms, 14 suites and 53 pool villas (we stayed in the latter). The design themes from the hotel’s communal areas continue into the private quarters, with exquisite finishes and a romantic reverence for the bedouin lifestyle. Large private plunge pools sit in the rear of the villa and offer panoramic views of the surrounding desertscape.

FACILITIES

Relaxation is the chief mantra at casa Qasr – whatever that means to you. There’s plenty on offer at the spa beyond the usual treatments and massages. A traditional Moroccan hammam with marble beds for example, an ice room, Biologique Recherche-trained therapists, desert yoga sessions, sunset meditation and more. There is a huge (supervised) kid’s club, a teen’s club, gym, padel courts and swimming pools. Desert specific activities include sandsurfing, camel riding, nature trekking, star gazing, dune buggying, archery, falconry and saluki shows, fat

FOOD AND DRINK

Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara recently made it known that this aspect of the resort would be given priority for enhancement. And it’s already bearings some tasty fruit. We checked out its temporary ‘Around the World’ menu pop-up. It was a collaborative 12-course degustation menu with former MENA 50 Best top restaurant, 3Fils and sister sweets brand Brix, and it was an incredible triumph. And following a comprehensive menu glow up at the hands of a locally based cheffing legend, the recently relaunched Al Falaj by Dina Macki is now serving regionally inspired aromatic awe on majlis style seating, under the stars.

ROOM RATES

Pro tip: There’s a page of special offers on the anantara.com with discounted room rates for GCC residents, bonus added extras and some attractive package inclusions.

But even just going off the standard rates, you can pick up villas from around Dhs4,000, suites from Dhs3,200 and rooms from less than Dhs2,000. This isn’t shoestring budget territory, but when you compare it to similar properties, it genuinely does translate into fantastic value.

RAMADAN KAREEM

KNOW YOUR STUFF

About Ramadan

Ramadan began on March 23, with Eid alFitr celebrations expected to commence on April 21. But what does it all mean?

Here’s all you need to know

What is Ramadan?

The ninth month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan is a time when Muslims around the world abstain from eating, drinking or smoking between sunrise and sunset.

Lasting about a month, it marks the time when the Qur’an was first revealed to the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). Extra tarawih prayers are performed at the mosque throughout Ramadan and each evening 1/30th of the holy book is recited. By the end of Ramadan, observers will have read the entire Qur’an.

Why is Ramadan so important to Muslims?

Fasting is one of the five pillars of Islam, considered mandatory by believers. The pillars are the framework by which Muslims everywhere live, and Ramadan is considered the holiest time in the Islamic calendar. It is a time for prayer, reflection and

religious devotion, to cleanse past sins and to focus on Allah through good deeds.

Why do Muslims fast?

Fasting, or sawn, loosely translates as ‘to refrain’. So during Ramadan Muslims commit to not eating, drinking or smoking during daylight hours. But sawn isn’t just about physical restraint, it also refers to bad thoughts, actions and words.

Ramadan is often a time to spend with family, breaking fast at sunset. The fast itself is intended to help Muslims learn about selfdiscipline and enable them to empathise with those who have less.

YOUR GUIDE TO IFTARS IN THE UAE

KNOW YOUR STUFF

Must everyone fast?

For Muslims, everyone is required to fast, but there are exceptions. Young children, pregnant women and the elderly and infirm are not required to fast due to possible health complications. Women on their monthly cycle do not fast, nor do people who are ill. If there is a temporary break in the fast, Muslims are required to make up the missed days after Ramadan. Non-Muslims are not required to fast. However, they should behave sensitively throughout Ramadan, which means no eating, drinking or smoking in public during daylight hours.

Does everything close during the day?

Most restaurants remain open

during Ramadan, but may have shorter opening times so it’s best to call ahead at the venue. Some places that are open during the daytime may have curtains or panels in place to conceal people eating and drinking from those fasting.

Everything tends to happen much later in the day during Ramadan. Malls stay open later than usual.

Do I need to do anything differently during the day? It’s important for everyone to dress and behave appropriately during the Holy Month. Even those who aren’t fasting should make sure that their clothes are modest, covering shoulders, chest and knees. Keep music levels down to a minimum and, of course, no public displays of affection.
