SUMMER ESCAPE

It’s about curiosity, perspective, and that electric feeling of newness. Whether you’re ticking off a long-awaited destination or rediscovering a familiar one with fresh eyes like I am doing right now in the UAE, the act of going somewhere – anywhere – shifts something in us.

This What’s On travel guide has been months in the making, and although I joined towards the final leg of its journey, it’s been a privilege to see it come together – a true celebration of the places that inspire us, and the people behind them. Inside, you’ll find a mix of the bold and the beautiful. Spend weekends close to home with brilliant staycations (p11), or short-haul jaunts to dazzling shores like Saudi Arabia’s rising star, The Red Sea (p20), or stalwart Indian Ocean gem, the Maldives (p28). Or get inspired to go further afield with our dispatches from what’s new and trending in Ibiza (p52), Rome (p58), Hong Kong (p62) and the Patiala (p25).

There’s a story in these pages for every kind of traveller. And true to the What’s On spirit, it’s all about helping you make the most of your time, whether you’ve got a long weekend or the trip of a lifetime ahead of you.

I hope this issue brings inspiration, energy, and maybe even the push you need to finally book that trip. Or two.

Here’s to taking off – even if just through the pages.

Through my eyes

Dani Wilson Naqvi

Favourite hotel

Each month, we ask a local UAE legend about their favourite places to eat, shop and explore around the emirates. But for this travel special, we’re going global. So we’ve tapped Dani Wilson Naqvi (@daniwilsonnaqvi), luxury travel designer and founder of Unique Family Travels (@uniquefamilytravel), for her favourite spots worldwide. As a travel specialist who’s ticked 55 countries off her bucket list, she’s well equipped to share the best places on the planet for all vacation styles.

Bisate Lodge in Rwanda is one of the most incredible hotels – so much so that it actually made me cry. The story behind it is very empowering as it was built by the local villagers. Its located in Volcanoes National Park, close to where you can trek with the gorillas. Aside from that, I love Nihi Sumba on Sumba Island in Indonesia, Soneva Jani or Soneva Fushi in the Maldives for the Robinson Crusoe experience, Gleneagles for a country retreat in Scotland, and Belmond Splendido in Portofino for a romantic couples’ break. @bisatelodge, @nihisumba, @soneva, @thegleneagleshotel, @belmondsplendidomare

Under-the-radar destination

Raja Ampat in Indonesia, known as ‘The Last Paradise on Earth.’ We went as a family sailing around the islands for 10 days. From diving and snorkelling with manta rays, to hiking the untouched islands, it was raw and beautiful. The team set up beach days and dinner on private sandbanks, we kayaked around islands and relaxed on the most incredible boat, which had 15 staff to assist with every need. Easily one of my bucket list moments.

Top staycation spot

I love The Ritz-Carlton Al Wadi Desert for family trips as we enjoy the desert activities and get to explore RAK with unique experiences, such as the Bear Grylls Explorers Camp & ziplining across Jebel Hafeet. Another favourite of my family is Atlantis The Royal, as the family can enjoy Aquaventure from morning to night, there’s an endless choice of mouth-watering restaurants, and lots of water activities. @ritzcarltonalwadidesert, @atlantistheroyal

Bucket list family trip

A safari in Africa is a must for all families. The most incredible safari experience I had was in Botswana in the Okavango Delta where we canoed in the Okavango and witnessed many truly wonderful sights. For first-timers, I would recommend Kenya. I work with many luxury lodges that are more private and located in private conservancies, so you get to escape the crowds and have a more up-close experience.

A destination everyone should visit

Cape Town, South Africa. There is something magical about this city. From the amazing hikes to the spectacular vineyards, driving the Garden Route to Hermanus to whale watch, and visiting the penguins at Boulders Beach – the vibe in Cape Town is unmatched.

Discovering the alluring duality of Red Sea’s crown jewels

Words: Alice Holtham-Pargin

Desert Rock Shebara

The sun is setting behind a dramatic backdrop of commanding, craggy mountain peaks. A DJ spins chilled beats under a constellation of spotlights. Well-heeled guests sip cocktails out of fancy glassware on an alfresco terrace. But this isn’t the French Alps, nor a hip new spot on the Adriatic. This is Desert Rock, the newest addition to the Red Sea’s luxury hotel scene. On Saudi Arabia’s northwest coast, the Red Sea project is pioneering the Kingdom’s tourism transformation. And while island resorts will dominate this breathtaking new destination, Desert Rock is one of two inland sites that frame the striking desert landscape. Twenty minutes after leaving the airport, we find ourselves walking the steps towards Desert Rock’s welcome pavilion, the voice of one of the local villagers echoing through the speakers that line the way. We sip a fruity local pomegranate juice before being whisked away in a buggy up a hill, and as the rock faces that guard the way fall behind us, the true majesty of Desert Rock reveals itself like a dramatic curtain raiser. The Oppenheim Architecturedesigned resort is spread over 30,000 square metres, with rooms and restaurants carved out of the extraordinary mountains and set on clifftops. It’s all dramatic, daring and beautifully intentional, spaces melding seamlessly into one another.

At the heart of the resort, warm and welcoming social spaces nod to the wadi’s historic significance as a gathering place for Bedouin villagers and travellers. For the ultra-luxury traveller the experience is elevated, with a well-stocked library, listening room complete with 400 vinyl’s, plus Basalt – a venue that serves breakfast and lunch by day, and transforms into an Indian restaurant by night. Adjacent, the resort’s inviting pool is lined with plush loungers, although we rarely encounter more than a handful of guests here. Despite the resort being near full when we check in, it doesn’t feel it. The sprawling nature of Desert Rock means the 60 villas and suites are all dotted across different cliffs and rocks. Nabatean-inspired villas gaze out over the local landscape, while show-stopping cave suites cut out of the massif are arguably among the world’s most unique hotel rooms. Our own cliff hanging villa is calm and minimal in aesthetic, luxuriously enhanced with

a temperature-controlled pool that gazes out over the rocks, a freestanding tub and crisp Frette linens. But it’s the little extras that make this stay special. A complimentary mini bar of gourmet snacks, Palatino hats and beach bags to take away, and eye patches left at turn down. Days can be filled with as much or as little as you like. Simply cycling around the winding pathways on electric bikes is immensely freeing, the wind rushing behind you as you uncover a corner of the resort you’ve not yet found. To further encourage reflection and rejuvenation, the Desert Rock spa is a haven of calm, inspired by the wadi it’s located in. We find ourselves here for a pampering massage one afternoon, and again for a yoga class the following morning. Both experiences are blissfully calming, Amara gold oil pressed soothingly into our skin during the massage, a gentle flow of yoga poses and breathwork leaving us calm and centred during the private yoga class.

But beyond holistic wellness guests can explore myriad culinary, adventure and cultural experiences, all laced with Saudi Arabian heritage in a way that breathes life and soul into everything. We drive with Ivan, a longtime Saudi Arabian resident who runs the resort’s Akun Adventure Centre, as he shares stories about nearby villages, wildlife, and the area’s history. Five minutes later, we’re suited up, helmets on, racing across the rugged desert terrain Dune style on an electric ATV with our local guide. We spot lizards, camels, and the footprints of wild dogs on our exhilarating drive, and it’s hard to believe 90 minutes has passed

when we return to the centre. The adventure continues that night, when, after a dinner at Nyra, the massif-facing restaurant of Michelin-pedigree chef Osman Sezenger, we head upstairs for stargazing. Local resident Anwa leads us through an astronomy session with infectious interest, sharing stories from childhood that ignited a passion for stargazing. We admire the craters of the moon, we stretch to see the rings of Jupiter, and even master a glance at the red-tinged face of Mars. The next morning, as we say goodbye to Desert Rock, we’re struck by how brilliantly it showcases its own style of luxury – less about excess, all about essence, where guests come away with not just memories, but a sense of meaning.

Visually, it’s the perfect juxtaposition to Shebara, the second stop on our Red Sea tour, located a 45-minute boat ride from the mainland. The strikingly futuristic orbs – the resort’s overwater villas – loom into view long before our boat glides to the jetty, their dazzling silver cases getting more hypnotising the closer we get. We’re greeted with cold towels and fresh juice, before being whisked to our villa for check-in by a private host. The resort is split into two parts: the orb-lined boardwalk and an expansive island where many of the facilities are located. On land, a collection of beach villas are discreetly nestled into landscaped gardens,

opening up onto a private stretch of beach, but we’d pick the overwater villas every time for the all-out glamour. The Shaun Killadesigned resort rejects lines, so everything is wonderfully curvaceous, each villa designed to look like a bubble of water rising to the surface. Inside, spaces are just as spectacular. Soft and soothing, a crescent-shaped curtain glides away in the living room to reveal an infinity pool and sunken seating area. Everything is ergonomically designed so that the practical is neatly concealed, letting the design wow factor shine. An automatically opening silver minibar has already caused quite the social media stir, and a quadruplesize experience shower with mood-changing lighting is another futuristic touch. But it’s with a sunrise dip in our infinity pool that we really feel the resort’s immersive beauty, the water from the pool seemingly meeting the waters of the Red Sea below.

Mere hours after arriving, we race from our villa to Solera, the bar adjacent to the chic adults-only pool, in time to catch the beautiful golden light dip behind the horizon, leaving a trail of sorbet hues in its wake. We listen to catchy DJ beats and sip on an alcohol-free martini, drinking in the stretching views. A short stroll away, overwater dining is best enjoyed at the upscale Japanese restaurant, Iki.Roe, where we pick a table indoors to watch the chefs at work, tucking into platters of sushi and tender steak perfectly seasoned and cooked just the way we’d like. After dinner, a buggy is waiting to take us back to our villa, the intuitive team already aware of our villa number without having to ask.

With its impossibly clear waters and rainbow-hued coral reef, snorkelling is a must at Shebara. So the following morning, we head straight from breakfast to WAMA, the watersports centre, to pick up our equipment, returning to the villa armed with a handy map and expert tips on the best places to go. At the far end of the boardwalk, there’s a platform that leads to one of the most vibrant reefs at the resort, but we choose to simply descend the stairs from our overwater villa and explore the underwater world below. We spot fish in every shade and corals of canary yellow and Nemo orange, and it’s only when we realise our skin has wrinkled in the water that we decide to return to land.

Departing Shebara feels like leaving another world behind, and as the frothy surf trails behind us and the resort shrinks further out of view, it’s impossible not to reflect on the majesty of both resorts. The design, gastronomy and service standard are all standout, but it’s more than that. Desert Rock and Shebara offer a kind of luxury that’s rich with meaning, deeply connecting guests to the location and heritage of Saudi Arabia in a way that leaves a lasting impact.

PALACES, THE PAST AND PRIDE IN

Patiala

How I ended up in Patiala was a complete twist of fate. Bound for the Himalayas with a suitcase packed full of thermals, my flight was cancelled due to poor weather and soon I was driving through rolling fields of rice wherever I looked, expanding to the very end of where my naked eye could reach. They say spontaneous plans are perhaps the best kind, and my time spent in this quaint crown jewel of Punjab’s lavish legacy reaffirms my faith in the existence of destiny.

Like many cities on the Indian map, Patiala is not exactly top of the bucket list lot of holiday destinations – the lines in Schengen visa offices are long and treacherous, but the charms of European civilisation and Balearic island parties never wear off. Only if one comes searching for the stories told within the honeycomb lanes of this city does one uncover – beyond these old, faded buildings, small, bumpy roads and tight-knit bazaars – a tale of a kingdom, gone, but never forgotten.

THE HISTORY

The roots of Patiala can be traced back to one Maharaja Baba Ala Singh, a visionary who came to this land and felt compelled to establish a civilisation. As such, a fort, the Qila Mubarak, was built in 1763, back then the centre of any settlement’s universe, and Patiala sprung to life. The name comes from

Discover a glittering marriage of history and hospitality in this quiet corner of Punjab

two places – patti, meaning a 360-degree strip, referring to the all-encompassing physical and social presence of the fort; and ala, meaning home or living space, and also from the name of Maharaja Baba Ala Singh.

Nestled inside one of the four enclaves of this Qila Mubarak is Ran Baas, The Palace, a Park Hotels and Relais & Châteaux property, a stunning restoration of the space where the wives of Maharja Bhupinder Singh once resided. That is where the name comes from – rani, meaning queen; and baas, meaning living quarters. A boutique stay with 35 suites, the hotel lies at the centre of this entire historical escapade I’m going to chart for you, living it, breathing it, and immortalising it within its ethos. Here, I came to experience some of the most sincere, thoughtful hospitality I have ever encountered. A conscious effort is made to give the guests the full Punjabi experience: we are welcomed with pomp and show, complete with a parade, a dhol, humbling folded hands and the echoes of sat shri akal.

While much has changed in life around

the monument from 300 years ago, a lot of it is still frozen in time, like a postcard. Anthony, a manager at the Ran Baas, The Palace, tells me that some of the vendors who have been trading in the surrounding bazaar since the time of Maharaja Bhupinder Singh still pay rents of 50 to 100 rupees for their shops – equivalent to Dhs2 to Dhs4 in today’s world.

Maharaja Bhupinder Singh took this modest, albeit expansive, dwelling from the time of his ancestors and filled it with treasures that far exceed the wealth of many royal families around the world. He was an inimitable personality, some of the oldest locals tell me, with a net worth competing only with the Nizams of Hyderabad and an ego fit for a king, further flourished by his posse of more than 20 Rolls Royce models, his 365 wives, his collection of medals, and his pushing penchant for all the finer things in life.

Today, the people of Patiala lead humble lives, driven by the salt of the earth and a pride in the past of their city that no one can take away from them. These regales of grandeur, opulence and luxury are locked away within the crumbling walls of the fort, and in modern India, the city is a part of the pulsating democracy like everywhere else in the country. But the mark of monarchy has yet to fade. For 15 years, the seat of this governance was held by Captain Amarinder Singh, an armyman and the reigning descendant of the dynasty of Patiala.

THE CULTURE

We pull into the city amidst sweeping farms of rice and towering, rust red brick kilns, seemingly some of the most lucrative sources of livelihood here – the state of Punjab contributes to about 9 to 12 per cent of India’s overall rice production, one of the highest in the country. Generational farming is a way of life, but so is the trade of their culture. Our tour around the central market of the city brings us to the doorstep of two of the most popular cultural exports of Patiala – the jutti and the phulkari work.

Sweety Singh has been running his namesake jutti store since 1947. A portly Sikh man with a permanent, powerhouse smile and a tender demeanour, he tells me his family came to Patiala from Pakistan during the Partition and bought this shop space to build their lives here. Sweety Jutti Store has been the same ever since – from the low roof to the signboard outside and the honest dedication to the craft. I’m overwhelmed by their hospitality, which I will relive over and over in the next few days, as he gently slides shoe after shoe on my feet with his own hands. In Patiala, daughters are taken very seriously, and I leave the store with a bag full of shoes and a tender familial connection.

Over at Jasprit Singh’s shop of phulkari fabrics, I am told this is also a family business, established in the 1950s and to this day, the store creates paid work for the women of Jasprit’s village. He rolls out dupatta after dupatta, in colours bright, bold and beautiful, adorned with mirrors, embellishments and sequins.

Phulkari is a traditional style of thread embroidery practised only in certain regions of Punjab. Our guide from the hotel, Rajveer, is a native of Bhatinda and tells me these fabrics are also an important symbol at weddings, often draped by the mothers and sisters of the bride and groom. Besides this, the city is also popular for the production of high-quality gud, or jaggery, and has a dedicated area of the

bazaar called gud mandi to produce this ingredient.

At Ran Baas, The Palace, the team immerse us into the local arts and music, and we spend our evenings on the terrace, which is the highest point of Patiala. We sip freshly brewed chai, nibble on Punjabi high tea, watch the sunset colour the sky pink, purple and blue, and are regaled by the musical strains of a pair of live Sufi performers – Mohit and Mohit, practicing their family craft – as well as stories from Deep Mohan Arneja, general manager, who connects with his guests as if they are family. On a different day, at brunch, a live Sitar performs soothing tunes as we dine on comfort specialities; and paan, a traditional Indian mouth freshener, is arranged on the slightest mention by our wonderful stay coordinator, Sonu.

In our room, the furnishings are a beautiful blend of traditional and contemporary, with massive arches, high ceilings, detailed engravings, ornate chandeliers, hand-painted motifs, geometric prints and lacey curtains that add romance to the entire affair.

A rich blue is draped everywhere, from the tiles to the bedding and beyond. This luxury matches all the other parts of the hotel, from the imposing, white façade, a stunning sight at nighttime, to the architecture, a fusion of Punjabi and Rajasthani design, to the grassy courtyards and the spa space, a converted part of the kitchen called the lassikhana.

THE MUST-VISIT SITES

The first stop on our tour of the city is the Moti Bagh Palace, a sprawling property over 100 acres of land, much of which now lays in disrepair. Enclosed within the walls of this palace is the Sheesh Mahal or Palace of Mirrors, built by Maharaja Bhupinder Singh for pleasure, joy and relaxation. The building is said to house unimaginable frescoes and mirrors, and even the world’s largest collection of medals, a milestone achievement for the Maharaja. Outside, marble statues and fighting cannons dot the gardens, and across a now dried-up man-made lake, a replica of the Lakshman Jhula of Rishikesh bridges the gap. Also in that compound is the Banaras Ghar, a banquet hall where the Maharaja hosted more than 100 covers; and the smaller Moti Bagh Palace, currently the residence of Captain Amarinder Singh.

From there, we move on to the Gurudwara Shri Dukhniwaran Sahib. According to local tradition, supported by an old handwritten document preserved in the holy site, a dweller of the village of Lehal, where the gurudwara now stands, waited upon the ninth guru of the Sikhs, Guru Tegh Bahadur. He pleaded with him to rid his village of a serious and mysterious sickness, which had been their bane for a long time. The Guru did so, and the site where he sat down became the site of this shrine, hence the name dukh-nivaran, literally meaning eradicator of suffering. On this day, the shrine is filled with the faithful, showing up for their share of the healing properties the water is said to have. As soon as we step foot on the marble, a heavy downpour begins, and we’re drenched from head to toe in almost a symbolic moment.

THE FOOD

At Ran Baas, The Palace, we are served some incredibly flavourful vegetarian Punjabi fare, from millet kichdi drenched in ghee to pakoda kadi, butter-laden naans, grilled paneer, dahi kababs, baingan ka bharta and home-style daal, all of which we consume at the Patiala Bar, a moody lounge splashed in shades of purple and blue. One mention of a preference for halal meat, and the chef sources halal chicken for us, a rarity in Punjab, to whip up a home-style chicken curry for our last dinner – such is the attention to detail. We traverse the lanes of the local bazaars and discover some of the specialities, including pure, homemade lassi, perfectly refreshing for hot summer days, and a whole world of confectioneries we never knew about at Jaggi’s Sweets - another local, family-run business.

As we tuck into our last meal in Patiala, I am reminded of what I’m taking away from this place – the people, in every step of the way.

HOTEL SPOTLIGHT: CENTARA RAS FUSHI,

Maldives

On a first time visit to the Maldives, deputy editor Madie Murphy discovers a destination that’s about so much more than just lazing by the beach.

The Maldives has secured itself a reputation for white sand beaches, dreamy overwater villas, and long, languid days of doing… well, absolutely nothing. But what if we told you there’s a slice of this island paradise that keeps you on your toes in the best possible way?

This idyllic destination just a four-hour flight from the UAE is a paradisiacal spot for switching off and blissing out. But there’s another way to experience this Indian Ocean escape. Enter Centara Ras Fushi Resort & Spa, an adults-only haven that proves you can have a typical Maldivian, sun-soaked, relaxing escape without pressing pause on fun.

It’s a 20-minute speedboat transfer from Malé, which is quick but also wallet-friendly compared to seaplanes, and it’s one of the few resorts where getting there doesn’t eat up half your first day (or your budget).

The villas are stunning, especially the overwater ones with steps straight into the ocean, some sunrise views, some sunset views. If you don’t fancy that, they also have beach villas that lead directly onto your own slice of sandy paradise. Everywhere is walkable in this resort, so there’s no need for the hassle of calling for buggies or trying to find available bikes just to go to dinner.

The food

Centara Ras Fushi offers half-board, full-board and all-inclusive options, which makes for a more affordable way to do the Maldives. But this isn’t just buffet-and-go. Think à la carte dining across several restaurants, from Thai flavours at Suan Bua to fresh seafood at Oceans, and even Middle Eastern mezze with your toes in the sand.

And yes, there’s a beach bar with swings, cocktails, and DJ sets, perfect for those Instagrammable moments. And who says paradise can’t have a little party? Plus, the best spot, in our opinion, is the Viu bar, which is the most romantic spot to watch the golden sun dip behind the ocean, leaving rainbow pastel shades in its wake.

HOW TO GET THERE

A playground for grown-ups

Water babies, rejoice. Centara Ras Fushi is perched on some of the Maldives’ most colourful reefs. Whether you’re a seasoned diver or just curious about what lies beneath, the onsite PADI dive centre has something for you. Prefer to stay closer to the surface? There’s a water sports centre too with kayaking, paddleboarding, and even windsurfing.

There are beach movie nights under the stars, dolphin watching excursions, cooking classes and even an airconditioned E-Zone with a music library, video games, billiards and more.

If you do feel like slowing down, the award-winning SPA Cenvaree offers gorgeous treatments to relax you, bring your partner for a couple’s massage, or get a mani-pedi while taking in the calming surroundings of the spa that’s hidden in tropical greenery.

Rates: A one-night stay in a beach villa on bed and breakfast basis starts from Dhs722.

Verdict: No, you won’t be bored here. In fact, you might leave wondering how an island that’s barely a kilometre wide managed to keep you so delightfully busy.

Emirates, Flydubai, Air Arabia and Etihad all offer regular flights to the Maldives from Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sharjah. The cheapest fares in July are with Air Arabia from Sharjah, with one-way flights from Dhs823.

Amman, Jordan ABDULRHMAN ATARI MUSICIAN

When one thinks of Jordan, it’s easy for images of Petra, the Wadi Rum and the Dead Sea to spring to mind. But a few days in its vibrant capital are unmissable for exploring the diversity and creativity of the city. Jordan is increasingly becoming a space for music fans, with a diverse scene that blends traditional Arabic influences with contemporary global sounds.

We spoke to musician Abdulrhman Atari, once the lead guitarist of international band Atari. He now has his own musical project playing funk reggae tunes blended with Arabic beats.

What’s your favourite nightlife venue in Amman?

Bisharat Golf Club is a great nightlife venue to explore. By day, it’s a golf club which hosts family events, and at night, it transforms into a space for open‑air music and dance parties. International artists Lost Frequencies, Black Coffee and French electronic music artist Francis Mercier have performed here. For something different, there’s a cool new spot called The Promenade on Airport Road – a charming open air venue that hosts cultural shows, family events, band nights, DJs, and singers.

Where in Amman do you go to lift your spirits?

Jabal Al Lweibdeh (also spelt Weibdeh) – one of Amman’s oldest and most charming neighbourhoods. It’s a vibrant hub where history, culture, and creativity come together. To really feel the pulse of Amman however, head to Downtown for markets, street vendors, and historical landmarks.

Why do you love Amman?

I grew up here, so I love it. There are a lot of exotic places and activities perfect for individuals, families and friends.

FRANKIE HILTON

PODCASTER – SAUDI LIFE: UNPACKED

Saudi Arabia’s vibrant coastal city on the Red Sea is charming and bursting with energy. It is home to UNESCO-listed Al-Balad district, striking contemporary art, and a dynamic food scene. Jeddah is a city where tradition meets transformation.

Tell us about a hidden foodie gem?

Pinch Bakery. A cosy dessert shop and café. Here you’ll find plenty of matcha, cute little cakes and sweet treats. The staff are also so lovely, and very accommodating.

How would you describe Jeddah?

Jeddah is like the California boho vibes of Saudi Arabia, while Riyadh is the New York City hustle and bustle of the Kingdom.

Can you describe the people of Jeddah in one sentence? They are some of the most chilled, welcoming, and lovely people I’ve ever met.

Why do you love Jeddah?

Everyone that visits Jeddah loves Jeddah! It’s peaceful, calm, relaxed, welcoming... Make sure you visit a homegrown concept store for clothes, and Basma Elkhereiji’s restaurant, Alieia – a Greek dining experience by the sea. Tell Betsy, the regularly visiting sea turtle, I said ‘Hi!’.

Muscat, Oman

OMAR AL-ZADJALI

PHOTOGRAPHER AND VIDEOGRAPHER

If Oman finds its way onto your travel plans, you may head to the South to lush Salalah. However, its capital city, Muscat, is just as vibrant. A space where traditional Arabian architecture blends seamlessly with modern development, it’s home to a beautiful waterfront, historic forts and bustling souqs.

Where would you take someone to experience the heartbeat of Muscat?

This is an obvious one, Muttrah. There’s something quite special about walking along the Muttrah Corniche, driving to Qasr Al Alam Palace. Here, you will also find Muttrah Souq, a traditional market with spices, textiles, jewellery, and Omani handicrafts, making it a must-visit spot for experiencing authentic Omani culture.

What’s one local experience every traveller should try?

Going to the goat market in Nizwa on Friday at 6am. The hustle and bustle is something everyone must experience. Nizwa Fort at night is an incredible vibe. I really recommend an overnight stay at one of the hotels at the fort.

Where should one go to get an authentic food experience?

It would have to be Lahab Kitchen – a humble eatery where the portions are generous and the prices low. You can sit on the floor in a cosy booth while enjoying Gossy, a traditional Omani dish of slow-cooked lamb or goat. If you’re after a touch of elegance, I would have to say Kalabash Lounge. It’s an Iranian restaurant located up on a hill in Qurum, where you have lovely views of Muscat.

CAROLINE BERZI ARTIST

Cairo is a city of contrasts – where pharaohs’ tombs and thousandyear-old mosques stand beside bustling markets and modern highrises. It’s busy, it’s captivating, and bursting with character.

Tell us about a true hidden gem in Cairo.

I really enjoy visiting Downtown Cairo, especially Khan Khalil and the famous Moez street, which is filled with cultural heritage from its historical relevance to Islamic architecture. It’s a pedestrian zone packed with small shops and a very small restaurant, Naguib Mahfouz café, named after a famous Egyptian writer. If you get a chance to visit, you might be able to listen to Oud live music.

The best spot to go to soak in art?

The town of Zamalek is filled with art galleries very close to each other, if you are looking to see contemporary art. But I also like to visit the Museum of Egyptian Civilisation in Fostat in Cairo. It’s a must-see, if you want to look at the beauty of Pharaonic Hieroglyphs and the details of the art on tombs, statues and jewlery.

How would you describe the arts and culture sector in Cairo?

There is always something happening in Cairo like art fairs and international and local installations around the pyramids. Visiting Cairo allows you to be surrounded by arts and culture, you can visit the ancient pyramids, then go visit the new Grand Egyptian Museum and be amazed by the architectural infrastructure.

What’s your go-to spot in Cairo when you need inspiration, and why?

I usually like to go to greener areas in Cairo as I like to be inspired by nature. There are nice gardens in Zamalek, like the Fish Garden. I also like to go diving in the Red Sea. It is filled with corals and diverse fish – truly beyond words.

What’s a local saying or phrase that captures the spirit of Cairo?

There is a saying in Arabic

“Feeha haga helwa” which basically says “there is something nice about it,” meaning no matter where you go and what you do in Cairo there is always something that attracts you to it and back to it.

There’s even a boutique onsite with Gigi’s signature beachwear and accessories. Designed by FrancoMexican architect Hugo Toro, the space reflects Italian style with French lifestyle touches – perfectly tailored for the Turkish Riviera.

Jacquemus Beach Club, Monte-Carlo

Jacquemus has made its most sun-soaked move yet for summer 2025. Taking over Monte-Carlo Beach, the label’s signature energy hits the Mediterranean with a splash of banana yellow and graphic black-and-white stripes – turning the classic Riviera scene into a chic playground. From runway to shoreline, Jacquemus is no stranger to turning heads. Now, its beach club concept is stealing the spotlight in Monaco, offering a stylish escape where fashion and leisure collide. The Pool Café steps up its game with monochrome vibes that feel more like a statement than décor, while two pop-up boutiques bring Jacquemus’ beachwear and accessories right to the coast. Rooted in its French heritage, the brand’s aesthetic meshes perfectly with Monte-Carlo’s luxe, laid-back lifestyle. @montecarlobeach

COYA Beach, St-Tropez

New for summer 2025, COYA drops its first beach club on Pampelonne. The vibe? Barefoot with style: think sun-faded wood, hand-thrown ceramics, and terracotta everywhere. The menu highlights sea bass ceviche, lamb cutlets, and lobster with white gazpacho. Pisco gets its own dedicated bar – because this is COYA, of course. The soundtrack moves from mellow to movement as the sun shifts. Daybeds, DJs, and that golden St-Tropez light –that’s the all-day scene.

@coyasainttropez

Amante, Ibiza

Amante remains one of Ibiza’s most beloved beach clubs – and for good reason. Set along the cliffs of Sol d’en Serra and overlooking a quiet cove, its stunning sea views and cinematic calm remind you exactly why you return time and again. The vibe? It’s laid-back luxury – a serene escape from the island’s party pulse. Think cliffside dining, crystal-clear waters, and a Mediterranean-led menu that leans into Ibizan seafood. Standout dishes like lobster rice and chargrilled giant prawns bring just the right touch of Spanish flair. Cocktails land as photogenic as the setting, especially when golden hour rolls in.

Dishoom, Shoreditch, London

Dishoom in Shoreditch holds a special place in my heart. It’s where my husband Shadi and I celebrated our first wedding anniversary, surrounded by the cosy charm of its Bombay-inspired interiors. Think warm lighting, vintage touches, and the comforting chatter of conversation around. There’s something incredibly wholesome about the food: the smoky grilled meats, buttery naan straight from the tandoor, the rich, slowcooked black daal that feels like a hug in a bowl, and the perfectly crisp fried okra that we couldn’t stop reaching for. Dishoom isn’t just a restaurant; it’s an experience - nostalgic, soulful, and warm. @dishoom

Gymkhana, London, UK

One place that stands out to me, even though I’ve only been there once, is Gymkhana, a two Michelin Star Indian restaurant in London that’s home to the best butter chicken and the best biryani. It’s the kind of cool you can’t put your finger on what makes it so special, but it is just so attractive as a venue. Also, my girlfriend is not a fan of tasting menus (which is what you get at most Michelin restaurants), so when I’m in London, I usually visit them alone. But Gymkhana is special because we’re able to order a la carte and can enjoy a Michelin experience together. It’s one of those restaurants that I want to go back to again and again.

Mercado del Puerto, Montevideo, Uruguay

To this day, nothing compares to my experience in Uruguay. I first got to know about this gem through Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations and I was instantly hooked. Back in 2019 I was unbelievably lucky to be part of a course called 7 fires by Francis Mallmann, in Garzon – an old train station converted into a hotel and restaurant. We spent the best part of 3 weeks cooking with live fire right in the middle of the road across from the restaurant and also visiting the most amazing restaurants in idyllic locations, either by the beach or the plains, in the city or the countryside.

Lung King Heen, Hong Kong

Lung King Heen offers exquisite seafood and dim sum by Executive Chinese Chef Chan Yan Tak. As the world’s first Chinese restaurant to earn three Michelin stars,I had the unforgettable privilege of attending an event in Hong Kong where Chef Chan Yan Tak personally prepared his signature crispy frogs legs with spicy salt for us – it was one of the most memorable dining experiences of my life. I was even invited into the kitchen to cook alongside this legendary chef. The consistency of the personallysourced ingredients, the depth of flavour, and the elegant oriental atmosphere of the restaurant truly reflect a standard of excellence that continues to inspire me. @fshongkong

Spain

Etxebarri is purity at its finest, it’s simplicity at it’s finest, it’s respect and passion towards one’s craft, respect for ingredients, respect to suppliers, respect in the simple art of cooking. All the ingredients come from around the restaurant – the cows are on top of the hill, the shrimp comes fresh from a certain local supplier, the milk comes from the cows. When I went, it was my wife and I’s honeymoon, and we drove from Madrid – it was a long but worthwhile journey. I had the chef - Bittor Arginzoniz – cookbook and I had it signed, and to see him in the flesh was like seeing Michael Jordan or Kobe Bryant, like meeting a culinary god. @asadorextebarrioficial

Disfrutar, Barcelona, Spain

Disfrutar is co-owned by Mateu Casañas, Oriol Castro, and Eduard Xatruch – former colleagues at the legendary elBulli. Since its opening in December 2014, the restaurant has earned 3 Michelin Stars and was recently named the Best Restaurant in the World for 2024. It pushes the boundaries of art, science, and creativity, delivering flawless execution with every dish. What truly set the experience apart was the warm, genuine hospitality, which elevated it beyond other world-class restaurants I’ve had the pleasure of dining at.

Concettina ai Tre Santi, Naples, Italy

On a long pizza tour of southern Italy, my son Sebastian and I fell deeply in love with Concettina ai Tre Santi deep in the Rione Sanità neighborhood of Naples. It remains the best meal of my life and the perfect blend of tradition and modernity in the food that I love most – pizza. We walked into Concettina as strangers and we walked out as family. It was a powerful expression of hospitality for young Sebastian and for me a lesson in blending youthful irreverence with the weight of history and its rich traditions. There’s room for both and a need for them to live in harmony. They do at Concettina just as they do at Marmellata, and for us it served as confirmation that what we had in mind already existed. @concettina3santi

THE RE-FIVE-AL OF

Destino

An Ibiza icon is reawakened with a touch of Dubai magic as two iconic hospitality brands come together for the reimagined Destino FIVE Ibiza

THE STORY

After creating its own league of high-octane hedonism, gourmet dining and lifestyle-driven hotel stays in Dubai, FIVE Hotels & Resorts acquired Ibiza’s Pacha Group in October 2023. This strategic expansion saw the Dubai-born hospitality brand snap up some of Ibiza’s most renowned icons, including Pacha nightclub, El Hotel Pacha, and Destino. While much of the Pacha-branded parts have remained the same, over winter 2024/25 Destino – the adults-only hilltop escape in Cap Martinet on the island’s east coast – has been transformed into Destino FIVE Ibiza, lacing Destino’s legacy and FIVE’s signature enigmatic touch into a new era for the hotel. Just days after opening, we checked in to check it out.

THE STAY

We’re greeted at check-in into a beautifully bold and modern lobby, flooded with natural light thanks to French doors lining either side, their blinds billowing in the welcome island breeze. To our left, the iconic Pacha shop and hostess desk for Playa Pacha – suitably adorned with a melted disco ball. To the other, check-in desks manned by friendly staff, many of whom are born and raised on the island, and all eager to welcome us. We’re greeted with a welcome drink of hierbas, a local island spirit, and quickly shown to our room.

Guest rooms are dotted throughout beautifully whitewashed casitas nestled within the hotel grounds. Some offer prime views of Playa Pacha’s inviting swimming pool – ideal if you want to be in the heart of the action. Our own room is nestled within the grounds, set a little further back to evoke a sense of boho-chic serenity. Inside the room, crisp linen sheets and spongy mattresses ensure that, no matter how many (or few) hours of sleep you get, they’re deep and restorative. A circular mirror above the bed and a not-so-mini minibar stocked with premium liquor are standout features that lean into the brand’s hedonistic reputation. FIVE Hotels’ eco effort is a welcome addition throughout, with plastic bottles replaced with recyclable Pacha water cans, and all the bathroom amenities are plastic-free. FIVE’s fluffy dressing gowns are the perfect accessory for getting ready for a night out, and a smart TV with Chromecast allows us to choose the soundtrack to each evening with ease.

THE DINING

While FIVE may have created its brand around high-octane events, it must also be credited for its impressive culinary offering. At Destino FIVE Ibiza, that translates into Cielo all-day dining restaurant and Playa Pacha, a luxe poolside spot where vibrant beats and Mediterranean flavours backdrop sun-drenched days under the Balearic sun. We spend lazy mornings at Cielo, where soulful acoustic sets and an in-house magician are welcome, surprise additions to breakfasts of fresh fruits, baked pastries and cherry sweets (an ode to the iconic Pacha symbol) from the continental buffet, and a la carte omelettes and acai bowls. Balmy Balearic afternoons are best enjoyed under the dappled shade of a cabana gazing out to the Mediterranean, or in the heart of the action with a lounger by the DJ booth at Playa Pacha. We sip glasses of Cava sangria, graze on fresh sushi rolls, padron peppers and tempura shrimp, and listen to resident DJs that play energetic sets right until the sun starts to set.

THE VERDICT

Bringing together the best bits from two renowned brands creates a stay that curates the perfect balance of thrill and chill.

UNVRS

Ravers in the 80s and 90s will know it as Ku Klub, while those who hit it up between the early noughties and pre-Covid will know it as Privilege. Either way, the world’s biggest nightclub is back – this time as UNVRS. Given a series glow-up by Ibiza heavyweights The Night League (of Hï Ibiza and Ushuaïa), it features dazzling sculptures, a series of alfresco terraces, and out-of-this-world production befitting of residencies for big names like David Guetta and Fisher.

@unvrsibiza

Pacha

Pacha isn’t just a nightclub – it’s an Ibiza institution. The sound system booms, the productions are mesmerising, and the sets are electric. Japan is a country of contrasts. From ancient temples steeped in centuries of legends, to modern vending machines dropping everything from hot corn soup to the delights of yakitori in a can, this country of calm chaos is one of the safest and easiest countries to travel around.

While many of us carry postcards in our minds of iconic snapshots of Tokyo’s neon lights, snowcapped Mount Fuji or Kyoto’s geishas gliding past wooden teahouses, Japan offers a layered tapestry that blends tradition with innovation. Whether you’re planning to check that dream cherry blossom trip off your bucket list, taking the road less traveled during shoulder season, or exploring the countryside to savour cups of tea with monks, Japan is home to experiences unlike anywhere else.

With a variety of flight options from the UAE, Japan is accessible, and once there, it is very easy to navigate around for groups, families or solo adventure seekers. The Japan Rail Pass is essential when travelling between cities and must be purchased before arriving in Japan. This pass allows you hop

HOW TO PLAN THE PERFECT TRIP TO

on and off most Japan Rail trains, including the Shinkansen (bullet train), allowing you to go from seeing the green blur of rice paddies through passing train windows, to the popular swirl of a cup of matcha being whisked in one of the back alleys of Tokyo – hassle free and in the blink of an eye.

Japan thrives on contradictions – it’s a country that is incredibly progressive and modern, while remaining fiercely traditional, frenetic and serene. Taking in the must-see sights, particularly on a first-time visit, will feed an Instagram fuelled appetite, but don’t be afraid to step off the regular tourist path – spend a night in a capsule hotel, belt out karaoke until the early hours of the morning, taste the strangest items on the menu, and learn to love a convenience food store (trust me, they are lifechanging)!

One word of advice on any trip to Japan, is to not rush. Embrace the quirks and lean into the whispers of locals, wander through the quirky villages, and if you stay here long enough or surrender to the current that will inevitably draw you back, you’ll notice the choreography in the rituals of the tea ceremony that match the falling drops on a commuters umbrella on a rainy morning. Every corner of the country offers unique theatre, and you will find yourself with a front row seat.

Rome, REVISITED

The Italian capital has long been a treasured draw on Europe’s tourism map for its cultural highlights, incredible culinary scene and storied architecture that commands attention at every turn. But a new swathe of luxury restaurants and hotels are creating new reason to return to the eternal city. Here, we revisit the best bits – and highlight the new icons travellers need to know about.

THE ESSENTIAL SIGHTS

Rome’s cultural fabric is built around historic monuments and storied ruins, and you can enjoy them all on foot – so long as you’re willing to get your 10,000 steps in before lunch. Start at the Spanish Steps, also known as ‘Scalinata della Trinita dei Monti’, and enjoy panoramic city views from the top, before a steep climb of 135 steps takes you to the picturesque Piazza di Spagna at the base. From here, wander 650 metres further into the city to reach one of Rome’s most timeless icons – the Trevi Fountain. A Baroque-style marvel carved out in the 18th Century, it features 20 metres of intricate sculptural design, including an iconic sculpture of the Roman god, Neptune. Be sure to take a coin to toss into the fountain – legend says that if you toss a coin over your left shoulder into the fountain, it guarantees a return to Rome. Just be prepared to wait your turn – unless you’re going at sunrise, throngs of tourists will likely be ahead of you.

A short walk away takes culture seekers to The Pantheon, another unmissable stop on our whirlwind tour of Rome’s big-hitting icons. This architectural marvel is more than 2,000 years old, built between 25 and 27 BC, then radically reconstructed between 118 and 125 AD. While you can simply marvel at its detailed inscriptions and ornate columns from the outside, you can also explore inside the basilica, which is still used as an active place of worship. Skip-the-line tickets pre-booked online

For fine dining:

start from EUR15 (Dhs65), including an audio guide. From The Pantheon, a short walk takes you to Monument Victor Emanuel II, the Roman Forum and the ruins that surround the Colosseum, where our walking tour concludes. Start at the monument of the first king of Italy, built to commemorate the unification of Italy in 1861, then journey past ruins of historic castles, historic temples and ancient forums before reaching the Colosseum. From the outside, you can admire the fascinating façade of this 189m long, 156m wide amphitheatre. But to really understand the true majesty, book a guided tour that takes you inside, accessing the arena floor, underground dungeons and gladiator’s entrance.

THE RESERVATIONS TO MAKE

For authentic eats: La Canonica

For rooftop drinks: Divinity Terrace

On the rooftop of the newly reimagined Orient Express La Minerva comes Gigi, from Dubai-born Rikas Hospitality and French lifestyle brand Paris Society. An elevated alfresco address, sharing plates of gourmet Italian classics are served up in a refined setting, backdropped by stretching city views.

@gigi_restaurant_roma

Tucked down a side street in Rome’s beloved foodie neighbourhood of Trastevere, La Canonica is a cosy ristorante where guests dine alfresco under warm lanterns against a wall of twinkling fairy lights. Think crunchy pizzas with gooey cheese and fresh tomato bases, or hearty pans of al dente pasta made with family recipes.

@lacanonicatrastevere

Hidden in plain sight in the heart of the city, the Divinity Lounge sits atop The Pantheon Hotel and offers panoramic views of the city. Come for drinks – there’s an extensive cocktail list shaken up by the expert mixology team – but be sure to stick around for the golden sunset.

THE STAY: THE GRAND DAME

There’s an old-world glamour to Hotel de Russie, one of the inimitable Rocco Forte hospitality portfolio icons. A time capsule of Rome’s golden age, you’re drawn into the hotel’s vibrant personality and rich soul the second you’re greeted by the smartly dressed doormen.

The interiors are beautiful – pops of rust red and emerald green on the soft furnishings, the lobby and lounge peppered with handpicked artefacts and ceramics. But it’s the natural light flooding in from the courtyard that draws you back outside, where the hotel’s true magnificence is revealed in all its glory. Here, you’ll find Hotel de Russie’s crown jewels – the Stravinskij Bar, Le Jardin restaurant, and the gloriously verdant secret garden, a true oasis where guests can enjoy leisurely post-breakfast strolls or pre-aperitivo wanders and drink in the splendour. The hotel’s restaurant and duo of bars are exceptional. At Le Jardin, breakfast is a relaxed affair where tiers of continental dishes – think fresh fruits, homemade pastries and cured meats are arranged inside the beautifully painted restaurant. The charismatic maître d’ Mario choreographs orders of a la carte eggs, fluffy pancakes and omelettes made to order. Guests sit at tables in the serene garden courtyard, freshly ironed white tablecloths adorning the tables that give a formality, but don’t feel stuffy. It’s grand and glamourous, and the perfect way to start the day.

New for 2025 is the Aquazzura bar, adjacent to Le Jardin, and an enigmatic new spot for dining and imbibing before dinner. Opening from 5pm, it’s where haute fashion and renowned hospitality bring all their best bits together under striped parasols for inventive twists on signature margaritas and mini tacos stuffed with lobster, beef tartare or tuna crudo.

Guest rooms offer a welcome balance of traditional grandeur and contemporary touches. We loved the turn-down service complete with Irene Forte face mask, made using ingredients from the Rocco Forte base in Sicily. Our own room overlooking the rose-tinted courtyard was the perfect base for exploring the Eternal City’s highlights. And when returning from a day of sightseeing, the gentle piano music drifting subtly from the Stravinskij Bar below was enough to draw us down to continue our evening on the buzzing alfresco terrace.

To further aid relaxation, we retreat to one of Hotel de Russie’s most delightful secret spaces – the spa. A recently reimagined addition to the hotel’s sensational facilities, guests benefit from access to a bubbling indoor pool, adorned in blue mosaics that emulate the feel of calmly cascading waves of the sea.

Room rates start from Dhs8,378 per room per night. roccofortehotels.com, @hotelderussie

THE STAY: THE ULTRA-LUXURY INNOVATOR

Six Senses might not seem like a natural fit for the Eternal City, but Six Senses Rome – the brand’s first urban address – is designed to stand out. Lacing its well-earned reputation as a wellness and sustainability pioneer into an 18th-century palazzo results in a zen-inducing stay rich with its own identity. A thoughtful restoration has preserved dazzling features like the ornate marble staircase with grand columns, and the hotel’s façade, which blends in perfectly next to the adjacent 16th century church.

But it’s in its contemporary touches where this hotel earns its wow-factor. Guest rooms are modern and minimal, with a curated pillow menu, a complimentary mini-bar, and daily affirmations left at turndown, all part of the in-room experience. Dining and wellness spaces are also designed to dazzle.

Once you’ve marvelled at the ornate grandeur of the lobby, you’re led into a lush indoor-outdoor garden, where terracotta pots are filled with tropical plants, promoting a sense of calm and inviting guests to embrace nature, even in the heart of the city. A grand emerald marble bar marks the entrance to BIVIUM, a warm

and homely all-day dining restaurant that provides a social setting by day, and a more sophisticated dining destination by night. An open kitchen, barista counter, and a gelateria tucked inside (where guests benefit from daily free ice-cream) are all designed to encourage connection and community. Upstairs, NOTOS is the new addition to the culinary scene at the hotel, and will undoubtedly become one of Rome’s most alluring rooftop dining destinations. Here, the cuisine is as sublime as the panoramic city views, with low-lying lounge seating, bar tables, and restaurant seating all designed for balmy alfresco evenings.

The hotel spa is where the two worlds of historic Rome and oriental Six Senses collide so harmoniously, and the resulting spa features ornate Roman baths, where engravings inspired by Roman gods and goddesses adorn smooth stone walls. The facilities are exceptional: think emotion showers spiked with the scents of mint and orange, a steam room and sauna, plus three baths that are hot, tepid and cold, designed to revitalise and refresh.

What impresses most is the expert curation of activities available to guests. Each day a board announces the daily events, which range from candle making in the Earth Lab to olive oil tasting at BIVIUM. Thoughtful, intentional and designed to inspire – much like the overarching hotel experience.

Room rates start from Dhs5,812 per room per night. sixsenses.com, @sixsensesrome

Hong Konghighlights

Blending fast-paced city life with storied heritage, Hong Kong is where East meets West. Here, we’ve planned the perfect break for experiencing the best of both worlds

WHERE TO STAY

Kowloon Shangri-La, Hong Kong

What’s it like?

The first-ever Shangri-La property in Hong Kong, this property first opened its doors in June 1981. Located in the famous shopping and entertainment district of Tsim Sha Sui East, it overlooks Victoria Harbour, offering a stunning view of the Hong Kong Island skyline. A 35-minute drive from Hong Kong International Airport, it’s also played host to countless celebrities and VIPs over the years, and a number of famous Hong Kong films have been shot here too.

Its grandeur is evident from the moment you step into the lobby, which, with marble-clad walls, intricate chandeliers, and opulent décor in rich, jewel-toned hues, was designed to mimic the feeling of being inside a Chinese palace. A large and impressive mural by renowned British artist Malcolm Golding, titled “Shangri-La Valley”, adds to the effect. One fun effect for travellers so busy enjoying their holiday they’ve lost track of time, is that the carpets in the elevators state what day of the week it is, changed at midnight each night.

Rooms

The hotel has 688 guestrooms and suites, all of which are decked out in neutral, stately furnishings for classic luxury. Muslim guests will be pleased to find a Qibla directional sign, a copy of the Quran, prayer mats, and bidets in the room should they need them- and separate male and female areas with special prayer facilities can be arranged for group usage.

Facilities

There are seven bars and lounges offering a wide range of cuisines, including Cantonese, Italian, Spanish, Japanese, and international cuisine (plus an excellent patisserie). A dinner at Shang Palace, the hotel’s signature Chinese restaurant serving Cantonese classics with a twist, is among the must-try culinary experiences.

The hotel also has a luxurious spa, with therapeutic, natural, and aromatherapy-supported treatments available. At the 24-hour Health Club, you’ll find state-of-the-art fitness equipment, as well as an indoor pool and a heated whirlpool bath.

Verdict: Frequently recognised as one of the top hotels in the world, this historical hotel has set benchmarks for Shangri- La on a regional as well as global scale. Staying here offers a slice of history, and easy access to the city’s shopping and entertainment hubs.

Destination: Dubai, UAE

Having just moved to Dubai, I’ll be spending the summer settling in and getting to know the city better. I’m looking forward to discovering its hidden gems –and its air-conditioned ones, too. I will be making quick trips to visit family in Doha and Bahrain.

Destination: Baku, Azerbaijan

This year I am packing my bags and jetting to Baku, Azerbaijan in September. I can’t wait to tick another Formula 1 race off my bucket list. But between the zooms out on the circuit, you will find me roaming Baku Old City, gazing at the iconic Flame Towers, scoping out the museums and enjoying a lunch at the Four Seasons Hotel Baku (yes, it’s already booked in). Find me kitted out in a Ferrari top and a Red Bull cap.

Destination: Brazil

Whenever I imagine the perfect trip, my mind goes somewhere far, quiet, and off the usual tourist trail – like Brazil. I’ve been before to Rio de Janeiro, São Paulo, and Curitiba, but I’d love to go back and explore its slower, quieter side: islands like Fernando de Noronha, Ilha Grande, and Boipeba. Places with no crowds, no cars – just lush tropical greenery, crystal-clear water, soft white sand, and that wild, untouched beauty that runs through Brazil’s spirit.

Destination: Cape Town, South Africa

Destination: Ireland

I’m heading back home to Ireland this summer and I’m excited for endless green fields, and realistically, a lot of rain. It’s time to catch up with family, drink some Barry’s Tea and put on about 17 more layers of clothing. I can’t wait.

Destination: Taipei, Taiwan

This summer, I’m heading off on a family trip to Taipei. I can’t wait to explore the bustling night markets like Shilin Night Market and enjoy delicious local flavours like beef noodle soup and authentic bubble tea. I want to tick off the cultural highlights and the best bits of the local area too, so we plan to visit Taipei 101 and do day trips to places like Jiufen Old Street, Beitou for hot springs, Yangmingshan Flower Clock, Shifen Sky Lantern and the Golden Waterfall.

Destination: Manali, India

This summer, I’m exchanging Dubai’s heat for the slow tranquility of the mountains with a trip to Manali. This Indian hill station in the Himalayas has those picture-perfect, postcardworthy views, with ivory, snowcapped mountains, rolling greenery, flowing streams and quaint cottages. Escape, disconnect and rejuvenate –that’s my plan.

Back to the motherland we go! It’s time for a long-overdue family reunion filled with hugs, happy tears, and all the good vibes in South Africa. My fiancé and I are touching down to celebrate two big milestones: my brother-in-law’s “I do” moment and my official debut as Auntie Sammi. Let the memory making begin!
