EDITOR’S LETTER

AND IT’S GOODNIGHT FROM ME...

I joined What’s On in February of 2020. Trigger warning. That was about one calendar month before the entire world descended into the vigorous cotton bud thrusting mayhem of the pandemic. Some of my first articles for the brand I would eventually fall madly in love with were written in Lockdown, answering the question of ‘What’s On?’ With, ‘just Tiger King apparently’. But of course, humanity prevailed. We put the banana bread baking tins away, started going out-out once again and the UAE received well-deserved plaudits from the rest of the world for its Covidtackling strategies. It’s demonstrative of one of the things that I most admire about Dubai – not necessarily resilience, that’s a passive trait – more ingenuity in the face of a challenge. It’s a city that perpetually reinvents itself, a state that abhors bureaucracy and decision paralysis, it’s actively committed to building a better future rather than waiting for one to happen.

It’s also a land of opportunity. That job at What’s On came seven years into my (currently) 12-year stint in Dubai. I was able to leave the world of travel and tourism and start a new career path as a reporter, quite literally overnight. There are few places where you could make that sort of change so dramatically and emphatically, and have your ambitions rewarded so quickly and richly. In my time at What’s On, I’ve been able to interview (and subsequently, shamelessly name drop) Hollywood A-Listers, drive James Bond cars and stay in Seven-Star hotels, I’ve eaten the most incredible food on the flimsy transactional premise of doing a grown-up school report of it afterwards. Working at What’s On has been an insurpassable pleasure, made infinitely more real by colleagues, industry friends and the readers. But I’m stepping down, hanging up my laptop, and handing in my Access All Areas badge for another shot at reinventing myself.

Not without one last heist, though. I got to recognise and celebrate the very best of Dubai’s ingenuity and opportunity, in the decadent fiesta of the What’s On Dubai Awards 2025. You can read all about it from page 13. One of the more wholesome reasons for my leaving is to have more time to spend with my family, doing the sort of activities you’ll find from page 31. But I’ll be watching, with teary-eyed pride, my old team from the sidelines. Madie, the gold-hearted Baddie; Dinesh ‘Brazar’ Ramanathan; Sheila the Free-Wheeler; Aartimus ‘Poppers’ Prime; Ill Manners; and Lana Del Slay. Stay blessed, you’ve got this. And please delete the contents of the group chat.

Enjoy the issue,

Through MY EYES

THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Charlotte Bruce-Alexander

This month, we chat to Charlotte Bruce-Alexander (@farfromfat126), Mum of three, career woman in the medical device world, part-time nutrition student, fitness influencer extraordinaire and co-founder of gym wear brand SWTZ. She’s juggling so much she refers to it as ‘cardio’, but she’s managed to take a bit of time out to share with us the benefit of her 15 years in Dubai. These are a few of her favourite spots in the UAE…

When the UAE weather cools down, it’s Jebel Jais all the way, nothing beats a mountain hike or bike with fresh air and no Wi-Fi. But as things heat up, I retreat to one of Dubai’s incredible collection of indoor padel clubs… even though I’m not the best, I love it and swing with confidence. @visitrasalkhaimah, @padelkingdom.uae

The St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort is my ultimate staycation spot. The beach is dreamy, the service is nextlevel, and it somehow makes you feel like you’re on a tropical island without ever leaving the UAE. It’s peaceful, luxurious, and the perfect escape when you need to recharge or enjoy family time. Something for everyone.

@stregissaadiyatisland

@3.fils

@kitebeachdubai

3Fils, Jumeirah: Tiny, lowkey, no frills and without a doubt the best sushi and seafood I’ve ever had here. You’ll probably wait for a table as it’s not such a ‘hidden’ gem these days… but honestly, I’d happily wait in the car park just to dine there.

Kite Beach is our go-to family spot, the kids love renting bikes and riding along the beachfront while we soak up the sun (or chase them around, let’s be honest). A quick dip in the sea followed by a cheeky ice cream makes it the perfect chilled-out day for everyone.

Hands down the best blow out food binge in the UAE, is the culinary duo of a Fuddruckers burger followed by a box of pick ‘n’ mix from The Sweetie Shop. It’s my ultimate treat combo, and honestly, if I had to choose a last meal, this would be it. No regrets, just pure joy. I wasn’t 60kg heavier at one point for no reason. fuddruckers.ae, @thesweetieshop.dxb

If you haven’t camped in the UAE desert, you’re missing out. There’s something unreal about those sunrises, total peace, golden skies, and for a few glorious moments, of no emails or school runs. Just you, the sand, and your slightly overcooked marshmallows.

My favourite chill-out spot in the UAE is a Privilee day. Any beach or pool with a view and a vibe. A cabana, child free, a cold drink, and zero responsibilities for a few hours. Bliss. Bonus points if there’s a wellness retreat like the one at Al Wathba, a Luxury Collection Desert Resort & Spa, Abu Dhabi involved. @privilee_uae, @alwathbahotel

HOMEGROWN RESTAURANT OF THE YEAR Moonrise CHEF

FZN, at Atlantis The Palm, is without a doubt Dubai’s best new restaurant.

Moonrise, led by self-taught Syrian Chef Solemann Haddad, offers a culinary journey steeped in nostalgia and creativity. With a rotating 12-course omakase menu, Moonrise celebrates Dubai’s diverse culinary scene, featuring locally sourced produce, inventive presentation, and flavours that tell a story. A powerful ambassador for the city’s food culture, it’s a must-visit for any food lover.

THREE PARENTING

HACKS (a.k.a. how to make it through the road trip without losing your mind)

1. Give them a job. Gift your kids a disposable camera and let them be the official family photographer. Zero screen time. Major impact.

2. Forget three square meals. Road trip parenting is all about the grazing. Think snack boxes, fruit, crackers, and treats for bribery.

3. Put a “just in case”

kit in the boot. Wet wipes, spare outfits, water bottles, towels, tissues, extra snacks, first aid essentials and blankets.

AND REMEMBER: No matter where you’re heading, the real win is in the little moments, whether that’s singing in the car, spotting camels out the window, or sitting on a rock eating ice cream together. Let the schedule be flexible, manage your expectations low and keep the snack game high.

KIRA

Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab debuts with a dozen new dining destinations, so what makes this one special?

Acollection of Dubai restaurants has made their mark on the city’s dining scene solely – or at least largely – because of their mesmerising views. The kind of spots that wow visitors and repeat guests in equal measure. And they tend to frame one of Dubai’s two iconic Burj’s – either the sky-scraping Burj Khalifa or the sail-shaped façade of the Burj Al Arab.

So Kira, one of 11 new restaurants at Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, is already in good stead. Sitting pretty on the edge of the resort it gazes right at the Burj Al Arab, perfectly framing the seven-star icon, with the golden beach and calm Arabian Gulf separating the two. But in a culinary scene as competitive as Dubai’s, new restaurants can’t rely on views alone. Kira certainly looks the part. A line of

glamourous hostesses welcome guests through a gilded gold entrance and into a restaurant that oozes opulence. Think super-sized chandeliers dancing a golden glow through the restaurant, pastel shades that are warm and sophisticated, and Italian mosaics laced with Japanese tapestries. The indoor space features a fresh fish counter at the back and two levels of seating arranged in a semi-circle to face out towards the terrace. Here, alluring alfresco seating awaits those wishing to dine outdoors, and there’s a more casual – yet still refined – lounge area centred around a bar, where guests gather before and after dinner for cocktails.

the chilli crisp option, the rice vinegar and yuzu olive oil make each crunchy mouthful a taste sensation. We also opt for the Padron peppers (Dhs65), which arrive well-seasoned with Amalfi salt but a little overcooked. The warm prawns with caviar (Dhs165) fare much better, and we mop up every drop of the ume brown butter they’re served in.

The crispy squid (Dhs75) is nice but a bit forgettable, and you’re much better trying options from the kushiyaki section, which arrive as two skewers. Both the Chilean seabass (Dhs125) and black cod (Dhs115) are delicious, fresh, and full of flavour.

The menu is positioned as JapaneseMediterranean, but is best described as a quintessential Dubai menu with a little bit of everything to please all palettes. It might sound unusual, but we can’t sing the praises of the Mediterranean pickles (Dhs45) enough. Whether you order the regular zesty ones or go spicy with

For dessert, the frozen lemon (Dhs155) is a strong contender for Dubai’s most Instagrammable new dessert, with swirls of yuzu and mandarin gelato scooped into a ripe lemon. It’s a refreshing end to our meal, and easily shareable between two.

Kira, Jumeirah Marsa Al Arab, daily 12.30pm to 4.30pm, 6.30pm to 11.30pm.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

A confident new addition in Dubai’s fun fine dining scene.

A slice of the action

Pitfire Pizza opens new location in Business Bay

Pitfire Pizza has officially landed in Business Bay. One of Dubai’s most fiercely loved pizzerias has just debuted a shiny new dine-in location, and it’s got everything fans adore: perfectly blistered crusts, punchy toppings, and serious neighbourhood charm.

What began as a humble delivery kitchen has evolved into a full-blown pizza destination. The new 1,300-square-foot space is cosy but cool, with warm wooden tables, splashy artlined walls, and an easygoing vibe that feels tailor-made for lingering over a slice (or three).

There’s indoor seating for when it’s toasty and a breezy outdoor setup perfect for sunset pies.

And the best part? It’s super accessible –plenty of parking, no maze-like detours, just straight-up great pizza with zero hassle. One of One Luxury Residence Tower, Business Bay, noon to 11pm (extended hours on weekend). @pitfirepizzabakers

STEAK FRITES WEDNESDAYS

Porterhouse Bar & Grill serves up a luxe take on the classic duo

The humble combo of steak and fries has never really gone out of style – but lately, it’s having a full-blown renaissance. And now, Porterhouse Bar & Grill at Sofitel Dubai The Palm is tossing its (very polished) hat into the ring with a Wednesday night special that feels like a love letter to the brasserie classic.

Chef Daniel Hillier is the guy behind the grill, and he’s not playing around. The lineup includes two standout cuts: a juicy USDA Greater Omaha Striploin (220g) and a rich Black Onyx Inside Skirt (180g, MB3+, 300

days grain-fed). Both are sliced just right, cooked to perfection, and plated with hand-cut frites that are crisp on the outside, buttery soft on the inside.

The real kicker is the house sauce. Creamy, decadent, and poured with just enough drama – just the kind of midweek upgrade we can get behind.

Porterhouse Bar & Grill, Sofitel Dubai The Palm, Palm Jumeirah, Wed 6.30pm to 10.30pm, Dhs369 for two people. Tel: (0)4 455 6677.

REVIEW:

LOST IN TOKYO BY AMEMIYA

A pure edomae sushi experience in Dubai Marsa Boulevard

Tucked away on Marsa Boulevard, Lost in Tokyo offers a sushi experience that’s worlds away from the usual Dubai fare. Forget cream cheese rolls and flashy fusion plates – this is as close to Tokyo as you’ll get without boarding a plane. And fittingly, it’s the creation of a pilot, Amemiya, who began serving traditional edomae from his spare room in Meydan on his days off. Now, his once-underground supper club has taken flight as a limited-time restaurant –one that deserves your full attention before it disappears this month.

Fish is flown in directly from Japan. The menu, which starts at Dhs350, is rooted in true edomae tradition, fresh eel, uni, salmon, mackerel and more, paired with rice that’s delicately seasoned. It’s sushi stripped to its essence: clean, balanced, and deeply respectful of the craft.

The space is intimate and minimal: a warm, blonde wood sushi counter, Japanese staff quietly working with surgical precision, and an omakase-style service that’s as much a performance as it is a meal. It’s a genuine Sushiya vibe – fast-paced, focused, and quietly reverent. Guests are seated for just an hour, mimicking the efficient rhythm of Tokyo’s top counters.

The ingredients are the real stars here.

The clientele on most night is almost entirely Japanese. It’s a telling sign that this place speaks fluently to those who know real sushi. And yet, despite the high level of craftsmanship, Lost in Tokyo remains welcoming and unpretentious.

Marsa Boulevard, Dubai Festival City, Sun to Thur 5pm to midnight, Fri and Sat 5pm to 1am.

Tel: (0)58 520 3012. @lostintokyo.ae

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

With only a few weeks left before the restaurant closes, now’s the time to go.

WHAT ELSE IS THERE ALONG MARSA BOULEVARD?

Marsa Boulevard’s waterfront has quickly become one of Dubai’s most exciting neighbourhood stretches, with a curated mix of homegrown gems and cult favourites. Highlights include concept store pop-ups from The Good Life and Comptoir 102. Looking for social dining spots? You’re in good hands with Reif Japanese Kushiyaki, Home Bakery, SLAB, Maison Matcha, and The Grove. There’s also BLU, Mara Lounge, TRIO, Haret Jdoudna, and of course, Lost in Tokyo.

REVOLVER

A blast of flavour in each bite

The Opus by Zaha Hadid, known for housing Dubai’s finest like The MAINE Land Brasserie and ROKA, is now also home to Singapore’s sleek experimental South Asian export, Revolver. At the helm, is Chef Jitin Joshi, a culinary visionary with a Michelin-starred history. Revolver is inspired by fire and flair, offering an experience that reflects these very elements. Its menu honours traditional South Asian culinary heritage albeit, with an experimental touch.

From the bright futuristic interiors of The Opus by Zaha Hadid, we step inside the bold Revolver. Its interiors showcases raw industrial aesthetics, dark wood and metallic surfaces. Suspended above us, a twisting round of glowing bullets. Above the bar, a cylinder of a gun lies on the wall mimicking a coat of arms. On the other end, an open kitchen where the chefs are subtly engaged in fiery and smokey theatrics.

Our waitress, Pritisha, was an added bonus to the night. She clearly knew her way around the menu and nudged us towards our dish choices of the night. We kicked things off with the melt-inyour-mouth yellowtail carpaccio (Dhs95) in a tamarind ponzu – a gentle acidic punch that prepped our palates for the rest of the night. My partial Goan roots instantly eyed the Goan prawn calchao (Dhs75). Pickled tiger prawns arrive at the table nestled in a seaweed hand roll bursting with a vinegar-laced masala –

Goan flavours that we know and love. It was sweet, spicy, and gone in seconds.

The burrata (Dhs105) was hard to resist and is unlike any we’ve had before. Paired with a peanut sauce and warm churros, it was hands-on, fun, and full of flavour. “Eat it with your hands,” Pritisha encouraged, and we gladly did.

From our seats, we spied our main being prepared on the charcoal grill. The Snapper on Fire (Dhs190) arrives with dramatic flair in a freshly charred banana leaf. A spicy acidic tamarind-base is added at the table mingling with the soft, buttery

fish. It was a standout dish.

The seafood and tender coconut (Dhs140) claypot rice hovering won us over and was a surprisingly light bite leaving a light coconutty flavour trail after each bite. The perfect finale.

Revolver, The Opus by Omniyat, Business Bay, daily 6pm to 1am and weekdays for lunch 12pm to 3pm. Tel: (0)4 257 9334. revolverdubai.ae

BAR OF THE MONTH:

BAR DES PRÉS

DIFC’s newest sky-high spot for sophisticated cocktails and skyline views

On the 51st floor of ICD Brookfield Place, Bar Des Prés arrives with serious pedigree. This is the first UAE outpost from Parisian chef and culinary star Cyril Lignac, whose Mayfair and Paris branches have already earned cult status. With its dramatic views, bold design, and refined drinks list, it’s a cocktail-led bar that plays effortlessly in Dubai’s top tier. Despite its roots in fine dining, this DIFC newcomer leans hard into the bar

scene – and it’s all the better for it. The drinks menu is quietly brilliant, marrying classic techniques with modern flair. Signature cocktails, like the Japatini (a sharp, aromatic blend of lemongrass, mango and yuzu), reflect the bar’s East-meets-West identity. Meanwhile, an espresso martini with a velvety foam top is one of the city’s best – clean, rich and not overly sweet.

Wines are treated with similar respect. The extensive list skews French –think Burgundy, Bordeaux and elegant Champagnes, but the real star here is the by-the-glass offering. With dozens of high-quality wines available without committing to a bottle, it’s one of the most accessible and exciting wine lists in town.

And while this is a bar-first experience, the food more than holds its own. The menu is light but luxurious: delicate sushi plates, spicy tuna tartare, and a standout crunchy crab and avocado galette with madras spice. Even heartier dishes like the satay beef fillet and lobsterstrawberry salad feel considered, fresh and distinctly Lignac. Bar Des Prés feels equally suited to an afterhours date or a polished business drink. The décor is a daring blend of rust, mustard, velvet and spots – sounds wrong, looks right. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame Dubai’s ever-dazzling skyline, making it hard to leave.

PAST PERFECT

Mateen Shah is the mind behind Assembly, the vintage interiors concept store bringing the past back – and making it chic

What inspired you to open Assembly?

Assembly was born from a passion for storytelling through design –bringing together rare, timeless pieces that add character to modern spaces. The thrill of discovering unique vintage finds and giving them new life is what truly inspired me. Believe it or not my home was where I experimented and built my personal collection that lead me down this path.

Your collection feels incredibly curated. How do you go about sourcing these one-of-a-kind pieces? Sourcing is a mix of strategy and serendipity. I work with trusted collectors, attend auctions worldwide, and constantly explore estate sales for hidden gems. The hunt itself is just as exciting as finding the perfect piece.

Who is the typical Assembly customer?

Assembly attracts a mix of seasoned collectors and a new generation of designconscious buyers looking for unique,

storied pieces. There’s a growing appreciation for craftsmanship and heritage, especially among younger collectors.

Is there a particular style, era, or designer that seems to resonate most with your clientele right now?

Mid-century modern and Art

Deco continue to resonate, but there’s also rising interest in Brutalist and postmodern designs. People are drawn to pieces with strong forms, rich patina, and a sense of authenticity.

Could you share a few of your personal favourite pieces currently available at Assembly?

Right now, I’m particularly drawn to the Eames Lounge Chair and Ottoman, the Praying Mantis Sculptural Floor Lamp, and a beautifully patinaed Persian rug. Each are iconic in its own right. They all embody timeless design and bring warmth, artistry, and presence to a space.

What’s next for Assembly?

We hope to expand our curation, collaborating with designers, and creating immersive experiences through exhibitions and events. We want to continue shaping a destination for collectors and design lovers in the region. Visit Assembly’s physical store inside Klekktic, Warehouse 9 –924A St, Al Quoz, or follow @assembly.vintagestore for more.

WSTOMP

Back at it, making a racket

something you can feel as much as you can hear.

hen most people think of a stage show, they likely imagine elaborate sets, sweeping orchestras, or heartfelt dialogue. But STOMP defies all expectations, taking audiences on a thrilling journey through rhythm, movement, and pure creative energy. This percussion-based extravaganza, now heading to Dubai Opera, celebrates how ordinary objects can be transformed into extraordinary instruments.

Born in Brighton, England, over 30 years ago, STOMP was created by Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. The duo’s innovation stemmed from the simple idea of making music without traditional instruments. Instead of hauling drums around, they turned to their environment, using whatever they could find to create sound. Their “laziness” sparked one of the most inventive concepts in modern theatre: a show that uses everything from trash cans to brooms and even basketballs to make infectious beats.

The idea behind STOMP is the simple truth that rhythm

is everywhere, and with a little creativity, anything can become a musical instrument. This philosophy has turned into a global phenomenon, where everyday items – from trash cans to tractor inner tubes – become percussion instruments. The result is a show brimming with energy, where every sound is created from real objects, real performers, and real passion.

The performers, known as STOMPers, bring the stage to life with such energy and precision that every beat feels infectious. Each show is unique, with no click track, no pre-recorded sound effects, just the raw, unfiltered sounds of real objects. The choreography blends rhythm, humour, and drama, making the performance

STOMP’s success also lies in its connection to audiences. There is no dialogue or storyline, just the universal language of rhythm. The show doesn’t require a specific cultural context or language, speaking to everyone, no matter their background. The beats, lively performances, and raw energy create an atmosphere where the audience is part of the experience. While STOMP routines are mostly choreographed, there’s room for improvisation, making each performance feel like a unique experience. The performers adjust their performance based on the crowd’s energy, keeping the show fresh and exciting.

After more than three decades, STOMP remains a thrilling, interactive show that captivates millions worldwide reminding us that sometimes, the best music comes from the most unexpected places. May 29 to 31

TRIED & TESTED

A LEVEL-UP IN WELLNESS

Contrast therapy with an extra touch of luxe at Longevity Hub by Clinique La Prairie

Tucked within the ultra-luxe

One&Only One Za’abeel, the Longevity Hub by Clinique La Prairie is a serene three-storey sanctuary dedicated to cutting-edge wellness.

Spanning 3,800 sqm, a spa experience here is a futuristic, hyper-personalised approach to optimising health and longevity. And if contrast therapy is already part of your wellness routine, prepare to experience it on a whole new level.

We began with a cryotherapy session, stepping into a sleek vertical chamber chilled to a staggering -110°C. If you’re familiar with ice baths, you’d expect the initial shock followed by a strange sense of calm. Cryo flips the script – it’s deceptively manageable at first, but each second intensifies. The sensation creeps in, sharpening your mental focus and demanding a different kind of resilience. It’s both physical and psychological conditioning, too.

Post-freeze, we were guided to a calming treatment suite via private elevator. While the room was gorgeously appointed, it was slightly disappointing that the

curtains were drawn, obscuring what must be a jaw-dropping view of Dubai’s skyline. Presumably, this helps maintain temperature, but it feels like a design oversight in an otherwise flawless setting.

Next came a 60-minute detox lymphatic drainage massage (Dhs1,000). Often underrated, this treatment is foundational for holistic health. Gentle, rhythmic movements help stimulate the lymphatic system, encouraging the release of toxins, reducing water retention, and promoting immune function. It’s deeply relaxing, yet energising, a bit like hitting the reset button

on your internal systems.

Though our official session ended here, we couldn’t resist rounding things off in the wellness lounge, opting for the sauna, but there’s a steam room and Jacuzzi available, too. After cryo and massage, the warmth felt like a luxurious reward – relaxing the muscles and sealing in the benefits of the earlier treatments. A perfectly curated journey towards vitality.

Longevity Hub by Clinique La Prairie, One&Only One Za’abeel, 9am to 10pm. Tel: (0)4 666 1618. longevity-hub. cliniquelaprairie.com

Step into spring with the ‘Spring Awakening’ ritual at Cinq Mondes Spa, tucked inside the opulent Raffles The Palm. This 120-minute escape kicks off with a juicy flower and fruit facial to get your glow on, followed by a dreamy Balinese massage to stretch, rock, and relax you into bliss. It all wraps up with a luxe slather of sublime balm – think Monoi oil, coconut, and tiare flowers. Total spring goddess energy.

Raffles The Palm, until May 13, Dhs975. Tel: (0) 4 248 8888. @rafflespalmdubai

// IRELAND

Laura Rooney

Craic, CASTLES AND COASTAL ROADS

From Belfast to the Giant’s Causeway and onto Derry, Laura Rooney explores why Northern Ireland’s time to shine has finally arrived

When most people think of Ireland, a few familiar clichés come to mind: rolling green fields, dramatic scenery and famously warm welcomes. More often than not, thoughts turn straight to Dublin. But venture north and you’ll find a region that’s long flown under the radar – until now. Northern Ireland is having a moment. And frankly, it’s about time.

There’s a word you’ll hear often up here: craic. Locals ask “what’s the craic?” instead of “how are you?”, and if something’s “great craic”, it just means great fun. That pretty much sums up what’s ahead.

Start your journey by flying into Dublin with Emirates, renting a car at the airport, and heading north –it’s a scenic two-hour drive through gentle hills and sleepy villages. If you’re arriving from outside Ireland or the UK, you’ll need an ETA to cross the border. Alternatively, fly directly to Belfast from a number of UK and European airports.

DAY ONE: BIG CITY, WEE GEM

Your first stop is Belfast, a compact city with a big personality. For five-star luxury, check into The Merchant Hotel (@merchantbelfast) or the Grand Central Hotel (@grandcentralbelfast), which boasts the highest bar in Ireland and sweeping skyline views. For something more fun and budget-friendly, Room2 (room2.com/ belfast) is a cool, design-led aparthotel in the city centre.

To get a proper feel for Belfast, join the Belfast Food Tour by Taste & Tour

(tasteandtour.co.uk). This four-hour experience kicks off at St George’s Market and includes everything from local cheese and charcuterie to small-batch gin and handmade chocolate.

Dinner options are excellent. Roam (@roambelfast) offers contemporary Irish cuisine in a stylish setting. The Muddlers Club (@themuddlersclubbelfast), hidden down a cobbled alley in the Cathedral Quarter, holds a Michelin star and more than earns it. For perfectly grilled steak, head to Deanes Meat Locker (@deanesmeatlocker).

End the night at The Duke of York (dukeofyorkbelfast.com), a beloved bar filled with mirrors, memorabilia and music. It spills out into one of Belfast’s most Instagrammed alleyways and rarely winds down early.

The next morning, head to Harlem (@harlembelfast) beside the Ulster Hall for brunch. Expect vintage décor, a buzzing crowd and hearty favourites like the “All Day Irish Breakfast.”

Before hitting the road, pop into Kelly’s Cellars (kellyscellars.co.uk), one of the

Lir Seafood Restaurant
Carrick-a-Rede Rope Bridge

city’s oldest pubs, dating to 1720. Then swing by Bittles Bar (bittlesbar.com), a quirky, flatiron-shaped spot said to pour the best pint of Guinness in Belfast. For a proper Irish coffee, The Garrick Bar (thegarrickbar.com) does it right.

DAY TWO: COASTAL CRAIC

Leaving the city behind, follow the Causeway Coastal Route – a ribbon of winding roads, rugged cliffs and seasprayed villages. First stop: Glenariff Forest Park. Take the two-hour Waterfall Walk through lush woodland and misty falls. It’s peaceful, wild, and completely worth the detour.

Continue on to Cushendall and explore Layd Church, a 13th-century ruin set above the sea. From here, a short path along the coast reveals dramatic views –especially on a clear day, when the Scottish coast appears on the horizon.

In Ballycastle, pick up fish and chips from Morton’s (@mortonsballycastle) and eat them on the harbour wall. If there’s room, a creamy 99 ice cream (whipped vanilla with a chocolate flake) is practically mandatory.

Game of Thrones fans can detour inland to the haunting Dark Hedges, which played the Kingsroad in the series, before heading to Ballintoy Harbour – another filming location, and a dramatic one at that.

Spend the night at The Bushmills Inn (bushmillsinn.com), a 17th-century coaching inn turned boutique hotel with timber beams, turf fires and cosy snugs. The food’s great and the history’s even better.

DAY THREE: GIANTS, CASTLES AND SEAFOOD

Begin the day at the Giant’s Causeway, Northern Ireland’s geological showstopper. Its 40,000 basalt columns are the result of ancient volcanic activity – or, if local legend is to be believed, the handiwork of the giant Finn McCool.

Just down the road is the Carrick-aRede Rope Bridge. Suspended nearly 100 feet above the Atlantic, it’s short but nerve-jangling – and the views are worth every shaky step.

Next, visit the cliff-hugging ruins of Dunluce Castle. Once home to the powerful MacDonnell clan, it’s also known to Game of Thrones fans as the House of Greyjoy.

For lunch, head inland to Lir Seafood Restaurant (lirseafood.com), located on Coleraine marina. Expect wild, sustainable Irish seafood served in a calm, contemporary setting.

That evening, check into one of Portrush’s best stays. Elephant Rock Hotel (elephantrockhotel.co.uk) channels a boutique, retro-meets-modern vibe, while Dunluce Lodge (dunlucelodge.com) offers refined luxury on the edge of Royal Portrush Golf Club.

DAY FOUR: DESTINATION DERRY

Enjoy a coastal cruise through Portrush and Portstewart, then veer west toward the Mussenden Temple. This picture-perfect 18th-century library sits dramatically above the ocean and is one of the most photographed spots in the region.

Just inland is Derry, Ireland’s only completely walled city. Known for its turbulent history and more recently, the hit TV show Derry Girls, this city is packed with culture and character.

A heritagesplashed journey through Old Dubai

Luxury meets tradition by the iconic Dubai Creek at the perfectly-formed Al Seef Heritage Hotel

If you’re looking to experience the cultural soul of a city that’s always in flux, Al Seef Heritage Hotel offers a beautifully nostalgic escape. Set along the historic Dubai Creek, this boutique hotel blends Emirati heritage with modern hospitality, placing you right in the heart of Old Dubai, yet feeling worlds away from the steel-and-glass sprawl of Downtown.

Whether you’re weaving through the souks or cruising past wind towers in a buggy, everything about the experience feels like stepping into a slower, storyrich version of the city. The hotel itself blends seamlessly into the old market surroundings, almost disappearing into its own setting, which is exactly the point.

LOCATION

Dubai’s Al Seef district is, in a word, unique. Set along the storied banks of

the Creek, it’s a heritage hotspot perfect for aimless wandering and deep cultural dives. The hotel sits just steps from the Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood, bustling spice and gold souks, abra stations, and beloved restaurants like Bayt Al Wakeel. It’s an area that anchors you in the past, but doesn’t leave you stranded from the action.

PROPERTY

Spread across 10 traditional “bayts” (Arabic for homes), the hotel is a time capsule done right. The architecture and interiors reflect a bygone era – wind towers, vintage radios, weathered doors –but with just enough modernity to keep it all comfortable. Rooms are intentionally simple, letting the heritage shine, while small luxuries remind you you’re still in a Hilton. Some rooms look out over the Creek, others open onto quiet inner

courtyards made for stargazing or morning coffee. It’s atmospheric, grounded, and refreshingly unpretentious.

DINING

The hotel’s in-house restaurant, Sabaa, delivers hearty Emirati flavours in a warm, laid-back setting. The breakfast buffet is generous, with local touches alongside international staples, while the à la carte menu offers comforting dishes like grilled meats, seafood, and regional favourites. Grab a table outside if the weather’s kind, you’ll have a front-row seat to the rhythm of souk life.

VERDICT

Al Seef Heritage Hotel is a rare find in a city that often leans toward the ultramodern. It’s charming, thoughtful, and effortlessly authentic – a stay that gives you a sense of place. With its winning location, rich cultural cues, and low-key luxury, it’s the kind of hotel that invites you to slow down, look around, and fall a little in love with the old soul of Dubai.
