This long-awaited landmark in Saadiyat Cultural District brings history, heritage and learning together in one stunning space, making it the ideal family outing as the weather cools down.

Before entering the museum enjoy a stroll along Al Masar Garden, a 600-metre outdoor gallery that takes visitors through the timeline of Sheikh Zayed’s life, set within landscapes that reflect the environments that inspired him. It features sculptures and plants representing the UAE’s desert, oasis, and urban settings.

The garden also offers a multi-sensory experience. THE UAE ACCORDING TO...

Through MY EYES WO TEAM

Each month we ask residents to share a guide to the UAE through their eyes – from their must-try restaurants and standout attractions to favoruite staycations and hidden gems. This month is a little different, the What’s On team share their hidden gems, favourite staycation spots and where to relax, because no one knows the UAE better than What’s On.

Atrangi by Ritu Dalmia, located in Jumeirah Al Qasr, is my go-to. You take an abra to get there, and the setting is beautifully calm - right on the water and surrounded by greenery. The food is pure comfort Indian cuisine, elevated with stunning presentation. Every visit feels special, and it’s easily one of my favourite spots. @atrangi.dubai - by Sammi Barnard

Anantara Qasr Al Sarab has to be my favourite hotel in the UAE. It’s a secluded getaway that’s 2 and a half hours outside of Abu Dhabi and it’s worth the drive. This hotel is hidden in the dunes of the desert and transports you to a different world. Book a villa with a private pool, it’s worth every dirham. @anantaraqasralsarab - by Madie Murphy

Need a proper chill day? Head to Tagomago on Palm Jumeirah. Think mini Balearic vibes, deep oranges, bursts of greenery, and a sun-kissed, island-life feel. The adultsonly pool is pure calm; the beach is family-friendly – pick your vibe. Go solo or with a friend. Grab a sunbed, take a dip, sip coconut water, and nibble on Spanish tapas while mellow tunes play, you’ll end up staying all day, feeling completely recharged.

@tagomagodubai - by Lana Du

Talise Spa at Jumeirah Saadiyat Island is the kind of place that makes your shoulders drop the moment you step inside. It’s calm in a way that feels earned. Time slows, the light softens and the sunset puts on a show only Saadiyat can pull off. Treatments drift between soothing and transformative, and the whole space feels like it was designed for people who forgot how to breathe properly. If you need a place to exhale, this is your must try sanctuary. - by Leonie Wagner

If there is one thing I enjoy doing (after drinking karak), it’s going on a roadtrip. The open road, dunes that go on for miles and a playlist featuring Masego, what more could you need. The UAE offers many stunning roadtrips but so far, my adventure to the Al Qua’a Desert remains a highlight and one everyone should experience. @arabian.wanderers offer regular stargazing trips.

- by Liam Joyce

Al Fahidi – the beating heart of Dubai. Here, history doesn’t sit behind glass and every corner surprises, from wind towers to a sunlit courtyard, a wooden door worn smooth by generations, a gallery tucked inside a centuries-old home, and of course, those glittering Creek views..” - by Aarti Saundalkar

It is the season of love, kindness and togetherness, and with this year being the year of community, it feels right to share a feast with yours at one of the capital’s magical spots. This is the season of guilt-free indulgence, the one moment where every bite is a reminder to savour the present, hold close the people you love and honour those you miss. FESTIVE AT HOME

HOW TO HOST THE PERFECT WINTER DINNER IN THE CAPTIAL

WORDS: LANA DU

December in the capital usually means beachy brunches and over-the-top festive dinners – the kind the city does best. Getting dolled up for an evening out is a vibe, but sometimes staying in feels... cosier. Whether you celebrate the season properly or just love an excuse to gather everyone at home, hosting a winter dinner in Abu Dhabi can be simple: a few thoughtful touches, great food (ordered or homemade – no judgment), and small details that make the evening feel warm and festive. If you’re planning a cosy night in this year, here’s how to do it.

Set the scene

Start with the atmosphere. Soft lighting is everything – think fairy lights, candles, or lanterns – to give your home a warm, inviting glow. A small Christmas tree or a festive centrepiece instantly sets the seasonal mood, while touches like pinecones, sprigs of rosemary, or metallic accents add that extra sparkle. Background music, from jazzy classics to mellow festive tunes, can also elevate the vibe without taking over the conversation.

Food & drinks

Touches that sparkle

Small details make a festive dinner truly special. Choose elegant tableware and seasonal napkins. Little touches, like seasonal scented candles – think cinnamon, pine, or vanilla –make the evening feel intimate and warm.

Interactive fun

If you want to add a playful touch to your festive evening, Abu Dhabi has plenty of interactive options to keep guests entertained. You can hire a Santa Claus to surprise little ones (or adults who still love the magic) or bring in a live illustrator or caricature artist to create quick, personalised sketches for your guests. In Abu Dhabi, Jam Events offers professional Santas and festive performers, while Bella Entertainment Abu Dhabi provides talented caricature and live illustration artists who can personalise the experience in real time.

@jam_events

The menu is at the heart of your festive evening. For simplicity, combine some handcrafted homemade dishes with a few catered items. Think comforting mains like roasted turkey or a roasted lamb leg with mint sauce, plus wintery vegetables or warm pasta dishes. Add shareable appetizers – cheeses, dips, and finger foods – so guests can nibble while mingling. For a five-star touch, Saadiyat Beach Club offers a turkey “swim-away” spread including roasted turkey, truffle mashed potatoes, cranberry sauce and more or roast lamb leg with mint sauce. For drinks, a signature cocktail or mulled wine brings festive flair, or pick wines from Royal Spirit – one of Abu Dhabi’s top wine delivery spots.

ITHE MAGIC OF AL WATHBA AFTER SUNSET

t’s just after 4pm when I visit the Sheikh Zayed Festival. The sun slips away behind Al Wathba, lights shimmer along the pathways. Drums thump somewhere in the distance. The smell of sizzling kebabs wraps itself around you before you even pass the gates. Kids tug at their parents. Almost everyone angles their phone toward the fountain.

The theme this year is Hayyakum, which means welcome, and the word seems to float in the air. It sits in the greetings from the ushers and in the soft swirl of oud drifting from the heritage tents. It sits in the way strangers move aside for families with strollers. It sits in the warmth that clings to the festival long after the sun has gone.

A welcome with roots

The festival was built on the values of Sheikh Zayed, whose belief in hospitality and shared humanity is everywhere you look. You feel it in the craftspeople showing you how palm fronds become baskets. You feel it when a child from another country stands mesmerised by a traditional Emirati dance. You feel it in the gentle care the organisers take to honour the past while opening the door wide to anyone who wants to step in.

This edition of the festival runs until March 22, 2026. It stretches across Al Wathba with more than 4,000 cultural events, 750 major shows and pavilions from 22 countries. It is a place where the old world and the new one hold hands for a few luminous hours each night. It is busy and loud and joyful, and once you’re inside, you understand the invitation behind Hayyakum. It is an invitation to linger. To learn. To belong, even for one evening.

WHERE HERITAGE COMES ALIVE AND THE WORLD GATHERS UNDER ONE SKY

Stepping into the Heritage Village feels like walking across the map of old Emirati life, all in one place. There are corners that echo mountain life: rough hewn huts, palm trunks, silent stories of survival. Nearby, you find the desert environment, with golden sand underfoot, Bedouinstyle tents, and small displays of ancient tools. The marine corner surprises. You hear the gentle lap of imagined waves, fishermen’s nets, and stories of pearl diving and dhow life. In between these spaces, the agricultural or oasis zone quietly breathes, with small date palms, clay pots, woven baskets, and scenes that whisper of old water wells and slow, steady labour.

In every zone, artisans are at work. Women weave, men shape clay, and craftsmen carve reed mats. All around, there are souqs with handmade goods, traditional jewelry, pottery, and embroidered textiles. It is a world rebuilt but deeply familiar, a place that feels like home even if you grew up far away from these dunes.

A World Under One Sky — Pavilions and Global Exchange

Beyond the heritage tents, the international pavilions stretch out. More than 22 countries are represented this year.

Take for example the pavilion from India, where embroidered textiles and classical dance performances bring its rich traditions to life. Nearby, Japan’s pavilion surprises with delicate origami workshops, bamboo crafts, and soft melodies of traditional flute music. Over in an Arab corner, Morocco stands out. Its pavilion is full of lantern-lit courtyards, colorful rugs, and craftsmen handing down leatherwork that feels as old as time.

What makes these pavilions special is how they connect. Visitors walk between them, learning how Emirati hospitality has its echoes across continents. A Moroccan artisan trading stories with a local Emirati weaver. Children watching Japanese dancers then running off to the date market. It is a quiet, powerful reminder that culture travels, shifts, and welcomes you in.

Traditions in Motion — Competitions and Skills

In one dusty arena, falconers gather for the Sheikh Zayed Falconry Championship, organised with the Abu Dhabi Falconers Club. The falcons fly and the silence that follows each landing feels almost sacred.

Not far off, the Camel Race Grand Prize brings a different energy. Camel owners, hooves kicking up sand, drivers leaning in, and the crowd waiting for the slow, majestic beasts to surge forward. The camels are part of a living heritage, carrying stories of trade, desert travel, strength, and persistence.

The Skills Programme, run by the Abu Dhabi Centre for Technical and Vocational Education and Training, adds another layer. Young Emiratis compete in technical and vocational skills, from engineering to crafts and traditional trades. Visitors can watch competitors build, carve, weld, or even try a few things themselves. It is a space where heritage meets the future and young people shape the traditions they have inherited not just to preserve them but to reinvent them.

WHERE THE SKY DANCES, STRANGERS CONNECT AND HAYYAKUM FINDS ITS MEANING

Once the sun slips away, the festival leans into its magic. The first burst of colour blooms over Al Wathba and everyone looks up at the same time. The drones rise in formation before they shape words and symbols that float like lanterns in the dark. Nearby, the Emirates Fountain answers with its own choreography as water jets leap and twist to music. Then come the fireworks that ripple across the sky and shake the ground under your feet. It’s a magical moment, the kind you only read about in fairytales.

A Gathering That Means Something

The festival is packed with things to see and taste and wander through, but its heart sits in the way people meet each other here. Families who have been coming for years bring blankets and snacks. Kids tug their parents toward the lights. Tourists follow the sound of drums or oud strings and find themselves learning something new. For many Emiratis, the festival is a reminder of where the country began and how far it has travelled. For visitors, it is an invitation to step into a world that is proud of its roots and generous in how it shares them.

A Welcome That Stays With You

As you walk out through the gates, the theme Hayyakum echoes in small gestures. A vendor calling out a friendly goodbye. A child offering you a piece of luqaimat still warm from the fryer. A volunteer helping an elderly couple find the exit. The festival tells the story of a nation that honours its past while dreaming boldly about its future. Hayyakum does not sit on a banner. It sits in the people, in the shared sky, in the feeling that you have been welcomed into something bigger than a celebration. It stays with you long after the lights fade.

Don’t Miss This at the Sheikh Zayed Festival

• Weekly Fireworks: Every Saturday, spectacular fireworks light up Al Wathba at 10 pm.

• NYE Drone Show: On New Year’s Eve, catch a 20 minute drone display starting at 11:40 pm with 6,000 drones forming a giant “HAPPY NEW YEAR” in the sky.

If you’re driving from Abu Dhabi city, take the E30 toward Al Ain, exit onto Al Wathba Road and follow the signs straight to the festival grounds. It’s a 50 minute drive with plenty of parking on site. Taxis and ride hailing apps will also take you directly to the main entrance if you’d rather skip the drive.

FOUQUET’S ABU DHABI

Where Paris settles into Saadiyat

The

spot

Fouquet’s sits in the cultural heart of Saadiyat, right by Louvre Abu Dhabi, and it feels every bit like a French love letter. The brasserie brings its Parisian soul to the island, carrying the same quiet glamour that made its ChampsElysees counterpart famous. Chef Pierre Gagnaire leans into classic French cooking with a modern wink, and the terrace gives you a frontrow seat to the sea and the soon-to-open Guggenheim. It’s food, art and a little fantasy stitched together.

The

vibe

This is the sort of place that makes even the most ordinary Tuesday night feel like the start of a romance. White tablecloths, red accents and soft lighting set the tone. Then the singer steps in with a voice so warm it feels like you’re being wrapped in velvet. She glides through jazz and soul, and before long you’ve forgotten where you are. The mood is grown-up, inviting and perfect for lingering with someone you actually like.

The

food and drinks

The starters eased us in gently. The marinated prawns with avocado tasted like the south of France in a bowl, bright and silky. The Wagyu carpaccio arrived dressed with red pepper confit and parmesan.

The beef bourguignon was the kind of rich that hugs you. Paired with truffle mash, it felt comforting and grand at the same time. The rigatoni with black truffle was indulgent in the best way, every forkful scented and satisfying.

Dessert is tiramisu. It’s classic, creamy and builds slowly until you realise you’ve eaten more than you meant to.

The

service

Service leans on the slower side, but it suits the space. You get time to breathe, to listen to the music, to watch the light skim over the water. No one rushes you and that’s its own luxury.

What to order

❑ Beef bourguignon

❑ Tiramisu

What’s on the bill

Around Dhs500 to Dhs600 per couple.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Fouquet’s is the rare spot where the food tastes as considered as the art around it. Every course feels intentional, every detail unhurried. It’s a place that treats dinner like a small act of love, and it leaves you carrying that feeling with you when you walk out.

Location: Louvre Abu Dhabi, Saadiyat Island

FLAMINGO ROOM BY TASHAS

A blush-pink world with flavour and flair in all the right places

The pot

Flamingo Room by tashas sits on Al Maryah Island like a graceful bird balancing on one leg, elegant without trying and impossible to ignore. It’s part of the wider Flamingo Collection, where a restaurant, champagne bar, luxury retail space and event lounge all share the same roof but each carries its own personality. The dining room is pure charm. Soft blush tones, hand-blown glass, floor-toceiling windows and just enough sparkle to remind you that elegance can be playful too. The African touches are thoughtful rather than loud, little reminders that the continent holds glamour as easily as it holds grit. Even the retail store pulls you in with pieces from South Africa, India and Colombia that feel curated. You walk in and the world gets a shade pinker in the best way. Walking through the space, I felt an unexpected swell of pride. The bespoke pieces from South Africa weren’t just decor. They felt like a quiet nod to where this brand comes from and to the kind

of beauty the continent creates when it isn’t being boxed into tired ideas of bush and safari.

The vibe

A DJ spins a mix that sits right in the sweet spot. It’s cool enough to keep your shoulders swaying but gentle enough to let you finish a sentence. The room hums with good energy. It feels polished, warm and relaxed, like a long lunch that somehow turns into dinner.

The food and drinks

The French onion and goat cheese tart arrived looking harmless but tasted like comfort. The caramelised onions were sweet, the goat cheese added a soft tang and the truffle honey grapes made it all feel a little naughty.

Then came the scallops on cauliflower cream with beef pancetta and parmesan. Each bite was smooth and smoky with just the right level of richness, and the truffle brioche on the side didn’t stand a chance.

The sea bass and scallops were cooked with confidence. Paired with truffle mash

and a vin blanc sauce, it was clean, delicate and deeply satisfying. The crab fettuccine followed the same rule. Fresh pasta, silky bisque, tomato and dill working together like they had been rehearsing all week.

The service

Warm smiles, easy conversations and that rare talent of making you feel like you’ve arrived at your favourite place even if it’s your first visit.

What to order

❑ French onion and goat cheese tart ❑ Sea bass and scallops

What’s on the bill

Around Dhs550 to Dhs600 for two.

WHAT’S ON VERDICT

Flamingo Room glides with the ease of its namesake. The food feels familiar but polished, every plate thoughtful without being fussy. It’s graceful, confident and full of quiet charm, the kind of restaurant that makes you feel a little softer around the edges.

BEST BITES OF 2025

Where Abu Dhabi truly tasted magical

Some meals fill your stomach. Others feel like they’re flirting with you. Abu Dhabi served plenty of both this year, and the ones that stayed with me were the meals that made us close our eyes for an extra second. The ones that made me sigh without

25 Minutes to Tulum

This is not a competitioon, but if it were, this gem wins. It’s one of the best things to happen to Abu Dhabi. Hudayriyat Island already knows how to set a scene, but 25 Minutes to Tulum turns the dial all the way up. Horses drift through the water as if they’re extras in your personal movie, and the sea breeze does its best impression of a soft fan. The tacos taste like someone’s abuela handed over her secrets with a wink. The trio of salsas arrives with crisp tortillas that practically beg you to scoop fast. Each salsa lands differently, from a cheeky little burn to a bright tang that wakes you right up. Then they send out the watermelon salad with ricotta,

meaning to. The ones that felt like the chef was sending us a secret message through the plate. These were the bites that owned 2025. The ones that made us greedy for one more forkful. The ones we’ll be talking about well into 2026.

mint, tajin and chamoy, and suddenly you’re questioning every salad you’ve ever loved. Sweet, fragrant, salty, sharp. It dances on your tongue. The Tulum Burger is a glorious tower of chipotle, cheese, caramelised onions and Toreados, with fries that disappear faster than you

planned. If you still have space, the churros come out warm, soft inside, dusted in cinnamon sugar and dragged through dulce de leche like they’re writing poetry. But the real troublemaker is the El Cabron Spicy Margarita. Tequila, triple sec, lime and enough chilli to make you sit up straight. It grips you by the collar and kisses you on the forehead. Sand & Koal

If romance had a physical address, this might be it. Emirates Beach glows like it’s been hand painted. At Sand and Koal the waves hum behind you, the sand warms your feet and the teal ocean glows as the day shifts. The atmosphere alone could seduce you, but then the food arrives and suddenly you’re making promises. The energy shifts too, from sunshine calm to DJ-soaked buzz, with crudos and cocktails swirling across the deck. Everything on the plate feels intentional. Flavours layered with care, textures that play well together, dishes that land with a soft flourish. It’s the kind of place where conversation stretches long into the night and where you could easily fall in love with someone or something, even if it’s just the dessert. The whole king crab leg arrives like royalty, dressed in crustacean hollandaise and beurre noisette. Sweet meat, warm butter, a little nuttiness. Pure indulgence. The grilled fillet of mangrove jack with local spinach and chermoula shows off the kitchen’s finesse. Bright herbs, preserved lemon, a clean flaky fish. It’s a place to fall in love with the moment, the people, the music and definitely the food.

Le Petite Maison

LPM was my introduction to Abu Dhabi dining and it set the bar unfairly high. Located in The Galleria, LPM tastes like the South of France if your grandmother teamed up with a chef who trained under the stars of Paris. Elegant, effortless, comforting, stylish. Everything feels familiar but elevated. The burrata with black truffle is a gentle knockout. Creamy, earthy, indulgent and absolutely not for sharing. Then comes the beef tartare with smoked bone marrow mayonnaise, a dish so rich it should come with a small warning and maybe a fan. It’s love at first bite. The Burgundy snails are the rite of passage. Garlicky, tender and soaked in parsley butter that you will dream about days later. The sides are no afterthought either. The dauphinois gratin is creamy and bold, while the broccolini refuses to behave like a supporting act.For mains, the grilled Wagyu sirloin is a celebration on a plate. The Vivienne lamb cutlets are perfectly pink,

finished with olive, eggplant caviar and pine nuts. They linger in your memory long after the plate is cleared. Dessert returns for the encore. The vanilla cheesecake is still the one I measure all others against. It lives up to its reputation as the UAE’s best. Light and silky with a berry compote that makes each bite sing. It remains unforgettable. The hot chocolate mousse is smooth and warm.

Sophia

Sophia’s at The St Regis Saadiyat is subtle elegance dressed in Mediterranean charm. Soft light, white tablecloths, bold art and a room that makes everyone look like they belong in a glossy magazine. The çiğ köfte slider packs a spicy, rich punch thanks to the beef, isot pepper and tomato paste. The smoked feta dip leans creamy and sharp, a smoky red pepper glow carrying the flavour. The vegetable risotto is a gentle, fragrant bowl layered with datterino tomatoes, basil, mint and a swirl of dill oil. The sea bass lands silky and bright with kakavia sauce, lamb lettuce and charred lemon. It’s balanced, generous and clean. Sophia’s is where conversation stretches and plates empty without you remembering how it happened.

West Bay Lounge

There is something quietly powerful about West Bay Lounge. It doesn’t rush you. It lets the setting do half the talking. The view stretches out like it’s trying to calm your nervous system. West Bay Lounge reminds you why beachfront dining will always win. The chef tells stories with the kind of passion that makes you want to take notes. The cocktails are incredible but the food steals the spotlight. The gambas al ajillo is the dish you write home about. Prawns cooked in porcini, button mushrooms and a punchy Mexican chilli sauce that clings to every bite. It carries heat, depth and a little swagger. The grilled tiger prawns arrive with mash so buttery it could start an argument. If you need something cool and clean, the sushi platter balances the richness with fresh, neat bites. Dessert comes in swinging with the West Bay cioccolato. A chocolate fudge cake layered with vanilla ice cream and drowned in hot chocolate sauce. It feels like misbehaving in the best way. The Placebo mocktail, with coconut, orange, pineapple, cinnamon and lime, tastes like sunshine trying to cheer you up. Every sip matches the mood of the sea just a few steps away.

Bord Eau by Nicolas Isnard

At Shangri La, Bord Eau feels like walking into a French culinary daydream, it’s an ode to precision and imagination. The restaurant treats ingredients the way galleries treat their paintings. Each dish arrives looking like something a museum would protect, but the flavours remind you that food is meant to be eaten, not admired from afar. The mains range from generous beef cuts to refined seafood, while the bistro favourites offer comfort with polish. Desserts glide out with the kind of confidence that says they know you cannot resist them. The textures, the colours, the sense of play in every course, it’s all crafted with an artist’s confidence. You taste technique, but you also taste heart.

Episodes at Emirates Palace

Afternoon tea at Emirates Palace is one of those Abu Dhabi moments that feels a little surreal. Marble, gleaming gold, and chandeliers that twinkle even at midday. The trays arrive stacked with delicate sandwiches, pastries so glossy you see yourself in them, and teas that smell like entire gardens. The Palace Cappuccino with its shimmer of real 24 karat gold is the moment everyone waits for. It feels celebratory, theatrical, a little over the top and absolutely worth it. It’s indulgent in the most charming way, like someone giving you permission to spoil yourself simply because you showed up.

Market at Edition

Breakfast at the Market feels like your morning is being reset by someone who genuinely wants the best for you. The terrace leans over the marina, all pale light and calm water. Fresh juices that taste like they were made by someone who wants good things for you. Eggs done exactly the way you like them. Pastries that test your self control. The homemade granola with Greek yoghurt hits all the right notes, crunchy, fresh and lightly sweet. The halloumi brings the salt and the bite. If you need a sharper kick, the hibiscus basil kombucha and ginger, turmeric and orange shot will jolt you awake in seconds. It’s breakfast as therapy. There’s a quiet confidence in the simplicity of the menu, as if the restaurant knows that the best mornings don’t need fuss, just good ingredients and a beautiful view.

CULTURE // SHEIKH ZAYED MUSEUM

WORDS: LEONIE WAGNER

ZAYED NATIONAL MUSEUM

A cultural moment has begun and Leonie Wagner is your tour guide.

“History is a continuous chain of events. The present is only an extension of the past. He who does not know his past cannot live his present and his future”

– The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

The wings come into view long before you reach them. Five steel towers stretch into the sky, sharp and confident, like a falcon gliding over Saadiyat. They belong to Zayed National Museum, the country’s landmark tribute to its Founding Father and the newest cultural giant to join the district. When it opens in December 2025, it stands as the tallest structure in the area and its most soulful.

I visit the museum yesterday and the experience settles deeper than I expect. The approach alone slows me down. The fountain outside moves in neat arcs while the UAE flag shifts in the wind above it. Behind the spray the sand coloured falcon wings rise from the ground with a quiet kind of certainty. It is all very beautiful, but the real magic sits inside.

The Story Begins

The museum’s collection tells a story that stretches across 300,000 years of human history. More than 3,000 objects live here, with over 1,500 displayed across six permanent galleries. Together they track the rhythm of life on this land from ancient beginnings to modern times. The oldest piece is a fossilised clam that survives more than 70 million years. I step into the Our Beginning gallery and it feels like walking into a family album that spans generations. I stop in front of a picture of the late Sheikh Zayed. His asa, a traditional stick, rests beside it, simple and steady. A Quran sits alongside it, a replica that still carries the weight of memory. Photographs and videos of the Al Nahyan family play nearby, giving the space a soft, intimate hum.

One display recreates the clothing of Sheikh Zayed the First, based on a 1904 photograph taken outside Qasr Al Hosn. It grounds the whole room in something real. Close by are the seals of the four Sheikhs who rule Abu Dhabi after the passing of Sheikh Zayed bin Khalifa. They are small items but they hold a lot of story.

In another gallery I find a replica of the black Chrysler once driven by Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Footage beside it shows him sipping gahwa and cruising through the desert. The images have an unexpected tenderness. He looks at ease, as if the car is just another companion on the long road through the dunes.

Further along, a tiny treasure sits under glass. The oldest Abu Dhabi pearl, so small

“A nation without a past is a nation without a present or future. Thanks to God, our nation has a rich past with a flourishing civilization, deeprooted in this land for many centuries”
– The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

and perfect I nearly miss it. A replica pearl sits beside it, larger and smoother. The contrast makes the original feel even more precious.

Across the galleries the journey continues through nature, ancestors, trade routes, coastlines and the deep roots that shape this place. Artefacts from the Emirates sit alongside international loans, creating a long conversation between past and present.

A dedicated temporary exhibition space widens that conversation even further, keeping the museum open to global ideas and new research.

A Building with Wings

Lord Norman Foster’s design rises from a walkable mound shaped by the curves of the UAE’s natural landscapes. The falcon wing towers are more than architectural flair. They channel air through the museum during cooler months through operable panels that help ventilate the space naturally.

The structure spans more than 56,000 square metres of floor area and close to

89,000 square metres of built space. At 123 metres high, it stands as the tallest structure in Saadiyat Cultural District. You feel that height when you stand beneath the wings.

Outside, Al Masar Garden stretches along a 600 metre outdoor gallery. It moves gently through desert, oasis and urban landscapes. A 60 year old ghaf tree anchors the space. Water runs through a traditional falaj system, a reminder that innovation is a necessity here long before modern engineering takes over.

Sights, Sounds and Scents

One of the museum’s boldest steps is its multisensory experience. It becomes one of the first national museums in the world to weave sound and scent through its permanent journey.

Composer Hamad Al Taee creates an exclusive arrangement of the national anthem for the museum. He blends traditional instruments like the oud and nai with Western orchestral sounds. His goal is simple. To honour the land, the people and the values of Sheikh Zayed.

“God gave our country along with oil and agriculture land and water, and this rarely exists in lands with oil. Thus, this gives us the responsibility of taking care of agriculture as an economic necessity.”
– The late Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan

Studio Al Watan adds instrumental compositions based on five poems by Sheikh Zayed. These pieces explore gratitude, progress and the beauty of the land. They feel familiar even when you hear them for the first time.

Berklee Abu Dhabi joins with ambient soundscapes inspired by the UAE’s natural environments. Desert winds. Oasis stillness. Mountain quiet. Sea movement. All these textures weave through open spaces in the museum.

The scent experience ties it together. Casa de Oud creates a signature fragrance shaped by oud, jasmine and native flora. It sits lightly in the air, guiding you from one gallery to the next. The effect is understated but powerful, the way a familiar smell can unlock a memory you forgot you carried.

Keeping the Memory Alive

The Zayed National Museum Research Fund strengthens the institution’s work. Established in 2023, it allocates AED 1 million every year to support research into UAE culture, history and the legacy of Sheikh Zayed. The grants vary in size but share the same purpose. To keep the story growing and grounded in scholarship.

The Future Lands Here

When the museum opens its doors in December 2025, it does more than join Saadiyat Cultural District. It anchors it. The space honours its Founding Father with detail, care and imagination. More importantly, it invites every visitor into the story, whether their connection to the UAE begins a century ago or yesterday.

Walking through the museum makes one thing clear. This is not a place about the past. It is a place about belonging. And that makes it one of the most significant cultural spaces the country creates.

Talise Spa, Jumeirah Saadiyat Island

The spa

Some places soften the world the moment you cross the threshold. Talise Spa does that with no effort at all. One step inside and the chaos of the day slips off your shoulders like a forgotten scarf. Saadiyat’s coastline sits just beyond the windows and suddenly you understand why people talk about wellness as if it’s a calling. For Abu Dhabi’s first Talise Spa, it feels like it arrived exactly when we needed a place to breathe. This is a place built for people who carry too much in their shoulders and want to remember what ease feels like.

The setting

Talise is a maze in the most comforting sense. Corridors curve, treatment rooms appear like secrets, and the hush settles

around you until your thoughts start slowing down without you realising it. Warm lighting, calm voices and that signature Jumeirah polish all work together to dissolve whatever noise you walked in with. It feels familiar, but also otherworldly, like a sanctuary that keeps surprising you.

The treatment

I tried the Grounding Ritual, one of three signature 90-minute treatments that also include the Cleansing Ritual and Swiss Bright. Mine promised to soothe a frazzled mind and coax the body back into some sort of balance. It began with a gentle foot wash that instantly softened my mood. The full body massage that followed felt like my muscles were finally exhaling. It was a slow unraveling of tension created by hands that understand exactly what tiredness feels like. Then came the head and face massage, which was so comforting I briefly forgot my own name as every last bit of strain surrendered. After the treatment I was led to a relaxation room and handed the tea of the day. It happened to be silver tea, a delicate mix of white tea silver needle, mint, lemongrass and rose petals. It tasted like calm in a cup.

The facility

There are fifteen treatment rooms, including a couples’ suite with its own sauna and steam room. In the centre sits a Grand Moroccan Hammam that feels

like a little world of its own. Think ancient rituals, aromatic steam and colours shifting around you like a meditative light show. There are hydrothermal experiences too. Saunas, steam rooms, an ice fountain, a plunge pool, jacuzzis and even a Himalayan salt room glowing in shades of pink, red, orange, green and blue. Outside, the relaxing beach almost becomes an extension of the spa.

The service

My therapist was incredible. The pressure was spot on and her attention to detail made the world feel gentle for a while. Soft hands, intuitive pressure and an unforced warmth that puts the body at ease. The rest of the staff carried the same energy. Nothing was rushed, nothing was stiff. It felt like being welcomed into a home that believes deeply in rest.

The

experience

Before anything begins you choose an intention card. Mine said “become the person you aspire to meet” and I felt slightly called out, but in a good way. From the first touch to the final sip of tea, everything felt purposeful and unhurried. The music was soft, the room warm, the scent faint but comforting. There are also sensory stations, personalised skin consultations and even a Sy’a tea station. Sy’a means plentiful in Arabic, which feels fitting because everything here seems designed to give more than expected.

What’s on the bill

Treatments start from Dhs980.

What’s On Verdict

A beautiful escape that treats the mind as kindly as it treats the body. Go when you want to feel restored rather than pampered.

TSanctum: The rooftop reset

Where sweat meets soul on Saadiyat

here is something about a Saadiyat sunset that reels you in. It pulls the noise out of your head and leaves room for something softer. That is the energy Sanctum leans into. On the rooftop of The Lounge at Jumeirah Saadiyat Island, yoga mats are lined up neatly and noise cancelling headphones sit waiting. At first glance it looks like the start of a peaceful stretch session, but Sanctum is not here to lull you. It is here to wake something up.

The session opens with a round of breathing that feels like the body’s version of tidying up. Then comes the promise of three chapters, though no one on the rooftop has any idea how those chapters will unfold. The sky is turning to golden syrup and blush pink when the music starts. Not gentle spa soundscapes, but rock, pop and power ballads that hit with intention. Each track is chosen to stir something.

As the sun sinks lower the energy climbs higher. Movements become louder and looser. People scream, jump, sway, shake and roll their bodies with pure instinct. Spines loosen, shoulders drop, and the breeze sweeps through the rooftop as if giving everyone permission to let go. The aim is to escape for a moment. A release that feels strangely joyful, even when it brings up things you didn’t expect to feel.

Sanctum’s sequence works like a reset button. It’s part workout, part catharsis, part moving meditation. By the end of

the session you’re not sure whether you exercised your body or your spirit harder. Maybe both.

WHO IS BEHIND IT?

Sanctum was created during the pandemic by Luuk Melisse and Gabriel Olszewski. Both felt that the wellness world had drifted into autopilot and needed a deeper purpose. Luuk brought the spiritual grounding, shaped by personal transformation and his belief in movement as a gateway to inner work. Gabriel brought the storytelling instincts and branding experience that turn a concept into something people feel. Together they crafted a method that treats movement as a mirror, coaxing honesty from the body and clarity from the mind.

WHAT IS SANCTUM?

Sanctum is a multidisciplinary moving sequence that draws from kundalini yoga, martial arts, animalistic flow, breathwork and primal fitness. It blends Eastern wellbeing practices with Western high-intensity training to form a holistic experience designed to push physical, emotional and spiritual boundaries. The music is a journey of its own, inspired by Amsterdam’s

electronic scene and layered with spoken word and orchestral moments that land like emotional punctuation.

The blueprint is simple. Expression without criticism. Movement without selfconsciousness. Release without apology. The practice encourages participants to explore their own edges and celebrate themselves as they move through each chapter.

By the time the sky melts into lavender and the final notes fade, the rooftop feels different. Softer. Lighter. Everyone breathes in unison and something settles that wasn’t settled before.

Dance may be life, but Sanctum feels like remembering a part of yourself that got buried under busyness. It’s movement with meaning, sweat with soul, and a reminder that sometimes you only find yourself when you let everything else fall away.

VIVALas Vegas

Here’s how to dive headfirst into Sin City

WORDS: LAURA COUGHLIN

If ever there were a twin city to Dubai, it’s Las Vegas –two desert metropolises that traded sand for spectacle and built playgrounds from pure ambition. Both glow brightest after dark, and both make you question what’s real and what’s just really well-lit.

Las Vegas is built on escape. It’s a shimmering mirage that’s mastered the art of distraction, a place that urges you to hit pause on reality and live entirely in the now. For decades, the city’s promise has been simple and irresistible: come here, lose yourself, and maybe a little of your dignity. The slogan may have evolved from “What Happens in Vegas, Stays in Vegas” to “What Happens Here, Only Happens Here,” but the mission remains the same, to make sure you experience something that can’t quite happen anywhere else.

And somehow, in a world where everything is available at your fingertips, Vegas still feels unique. It’s brash and wonderfully surreal, a city that thrives on spectacle. From billion-dollar domes to neon backstreets, from bottomless brunches to drive-thru weddings, it’s a high-definition dreamscape where the absurd and the amazing coexist happily.

So, whether you’re here to max out your camera roll or credit card, these are the six things you absolutely must do on your first trip to Las Vegas, the ones that define the city’s spirit of all-out, unapologetic fun.

1. STEP INSIDE THE SPHERE

Location: The Strip

You’ll see it before your plane even lands, a glowing, 366-foot orb that pulses with light like the world’s biggest mood ring. The Sphere is Vegas’ newest obsession, a $2.3 billion venue that’s part concert hall, part alien spaceship. Inside, 270 degrees of visuals wrap around the audience in dizzying high-definition, while sound travels through vibrating seats for a fully immersive experience. The Sphere has already hosted icons like U2, Phish, and Dead & Company, and its calendar is only getting bolder. Even Delta Airlines is using it for CES keynotes, because in Vegas, even corporate presentations come with pyrotechnics. It’s the future of live entertainment, and it happens to live right on the Strip.

2. EAT YOUR WAY THROUGH THE WYNN BUFFET

Location: Wynn Las Vegas

3. DARE TO WANDER DOWN FREEMONT STREET

Location: Downtown Las Vegas

There are two kinds of Vegas visitors – Strip people and Fremont people. The first group chases bottle service and curates perfection; the second dives headfirst into the city’s weird, wonderful underbelly. Fremont Street is old-school Vegas turned up to eleven. It’s where neon signs, street performers, vintage casinos, and the world’s largest LED canopy collide in glorious chaos. Locals love it because it feels real. Grab a cheap beer, zipline under a ceiling of flashing lights, and remember why Vegas became legendary in the first place.

Vegas practically invented the buffet, and the one at Wynn is its crown jewel. Forget soggy eggs and carving stations, this is a global food parade where lobster Benedicts and red velvet chocolate chip pancakes share the stage with pizza, tamales, and barbecue ribs. Sixteen stations, endless plates, and an “Endless Pours” upgrade that keeps the mimosas flowing. Enter through an avenue lined with royal palms and prepare for sensory overload.

4. CRASH A DRIVETHRU WEDDING

Location: The Little White Wedding Chapel, Downtown

Vegas weddings are an institution. The Little White Wedding Chapel has married everyone from Britney Spears to Ben Affleck and Jennifer Lopez. It’s also the birthplace of the 24-hour drive-thru wedding window, a happy accident that started when a groom in a wheelchair couldn’t make it inside. You don’t need to be tying the knot to enjoy the spectacle. Park nearby and watch as couples roll up in pink Cadillacs for their five-minute “I dos.” It’s utterly Vegas – where love, like everything else, comes with a side of showmanship.

5. SEE THE BELLAGIO FOUNTAINS

Location: The Strip

It’s impossible to overstate the drama of the Bellagio Fountains, a perfectly choreographed water ballet set to Sinatra, Gaga, and whatever else the hotel decides to blast that hour. Every 15 to 30 minutes, the fountains leap, twist, and shimmer in perfect time with the music, sending tourists scrambling for the best selfie angle. It’s touristy, but you’ll find it fun regardless.

6. LEAVE THE CITY AND TAKE THE GRAND CANYON MULE TOUR

Location: Book through Xanterra

When you’re ready to detox from neon and noise, a mule ride through the Grand Canyon is the ultimate reality reset. The sure-footed mules wind along cliffside trails that have changed little in centuries, ending at Phantom Ranch by Bright Angel Creek. It’s physically demanding and reviews mention “occasionally terrifying”, but that’s the point. After days of air-conditioned indulgence, this is Vegas’ wild counterpart: nature’s version of a high-stakes adventure.

WHERE TO STAY

WYNN LAS VEGAS

Las Vegas has never been short on spectacle, but Wynn plays in a league of its own, where indulgence comes dressed in impeccable taste. Opened in 2005 and still one of the Strip’s crown jewels, Wynn Las Vegas is the epitome of a casino resort: less carnival, more couture.

Inside, the design is classic Wynn. Grand and playful. Sunlight filters through glass ceilings, florals tumble across mosaic floors, and every corridor feels carefully curated. The interiors are a masterclass in hospitality theatre, orchestrated to make guests feel cocooned and dazzled at once. From the perfumed air to the hushed efficiency of the staff, every detail creates a seamless, soft-focus reality.

Rooms are spacious, and soundproofed from the Strip’s frenzy below. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame either the neon sprawl or the serene Wynn Golf Club, the only 18-hole championship course on Las Vegas Boulevard. Beds are cloud-soft, marble bathrooms gleam, and automation lets guests adjust everything from drapes to lighting with a touch. It’s the Vegas fantasy and meticulously maintained.

Meanwhile, dining here is its own universe. The Buffet at Wynn is a kaleidoscopic sprawl of global flavours that turns the humble all-you-can-eat concept into a high-gloss performance. Delilah, a glittering 1950s-inspired supper club, serves live jazz, martinis, and prime rib under gilded chandeliers, and Mizumi offers artful Japanese dishes beside a koifilled lagoon.

Wynn’s wellness scene is quietly exceptional, too. The spa bathes in whispered luxury, blending Eastern

philosophies with modern techniques. Pool decks are lush and secluded and the shopping arcade features Chanel and Hermès. You literally never have to leave the resort. Most never do.

By night, Wynn transforms again. The Lake of Dreams, a 40-foot waterfall backed by LED artistry, a singing frog and surreal projections, becomes the hypnotic heart of the resort. Whether sipping champagne at Parasol Down or watching from the terrace, it’s an orchestrated spectacle of awe.

And soon, this signature glamour travels east. Residents of the UAE will have the chance to experience Wynn’s ethos closer to home when Wynn Al Marjan Island opens in spring 2027, a taste of Vegas luxury for the Arabian Gulf. Aren’t we lucky?

Rates for a Wynn Resort King room in December start at Dhs879 (excl taxes) per night. wynnlasvegas.com

Al Zorah Beach Resort

A serene retreat undergoing an exciting transformation promises relaxation and rejuvenation

SET THE SCENE

Change is afoot on the sleepy Al Zorah shorefront. The luxury resort once known as The Oberoi has been taken over by Four Seasons, and will be reimagined into the Four Seasons Ajman at Al Zorah in 2026. In the interim, it’s simply known as Al Zorah Beach Resort, while hospitality heavyweights Four Seasons inject their signature five-star service and reimagine the culinary and wellness offering.

THE LOCATION

In under an hour, we’ve left Dubai’s soaring skyscrapers for Al Zorah’s verdant, low-lying landscape, a welcome serenity oozes from the Al Zorah Beach Resort from the second you pull up at the valet. It’s close enough to the city to be convenient, but far enough away to feel like you’re on holiday.

THE DESIGN

The lush landscaping gives Al Zorah Beach Resort a tropical feel, with swaying palms and bushy trees offering seclusion, privacy and a welcome immersion into nature.

The contemporary, modern aesthetic runs from the lobby, flooded with natural light

and expanding out onto shallow pools, right through to guest rooms, villas, and the duo of signature restaurants.

THE ROOM

Our Premier Ocean View Room was light and spacious, and welcome amenities of fresh fruit and sweet macaroons were a lovely touch. We sank effortlessly into plump feather pillows after a day of shorefront relaxation, and the crisp sheets and springy mattress offered one of the best night’s sleep we’d had in ages. A generous bathroom featured a huge walkin shower and sumptuous free-standing tub, plus fragrant Le Labo amenities. The first floor balcony facing over the pool and towards the sea offered blissful alfresco serenity, the sound of chirping birds providing our morning wake-up call.

THE ACTIVITIES

A stretching swimming pool is a standout feature, perfectly chilled and lined with sun loungers and shaded cabanas. Pro tip, arrive in good time, during busy periods

these quickly fill up. The property will benefit from an adults-only pool (part of Four Seasons’ forthcoming enhancements) for those looking to truly switch-off, as families fill the current poolside. At the spa, a pampering massage using fragrant ALQVIMIA oils is relaxing – the therapist using just the right amount of pressure to work out any tension. Those looking to up the ante with activities can enjoy watersports from the beach, or perfect their swing on the adjacent 18-hole Al Zorah Golf Course.

THE FOOD AND DRINK

Breakfast at Vinesse provides a simple but well-stocked continental buffet, complimented by an extensive a la carte menu where eggs a dozen ways, staple sweet treats and international dishes can be ordered as you like. Dinner is best enjoyed by the sea at Aquario. Order from the seafood bar to sample locally caught delicacies, like tiger prawns simply drizzled in chilli butter – a standout dish during our stay.

THE FINAL SAY

A welcome antidote to busy city life, Al Zorah Beach Resort is an oasis of calm where local flavour and natural beauty make for a thoughtful stay.

WHAT’S ON THE BILL

A one-night stay for two starts from Dhs1,650 room only, or Dhs1,800 with breakfast. Al Zorah Beach Resort’s expansive collection of villas, which range from one to three bedrooms and are ideal for group getaways, start from Dhs4,200.
