This new address wants to be the world’s most luxurious hotel. Here’s what it’s like...
An iconic location for an iconic hotel, you’ll find Atlantis
The Royal at the top of the Palm Jumeirah. It’s separated from sister hotel Atlantis, The Palm by the world’s largest waterpark.
Where neighbouring Atlantis, The Palm is a palatial pink beacon of Arabian grandeur, Atlantis The Royal is the antithesis in terms of aesthetic. The design can best be described as posh blocks of Lego stacked on top of each other to create a futuristic, two-tower emporium connected in the middle by a stretching sky pool. Inside, the hotel adopts an equally contemporary feel, adorned in varying shades of oceanic blue and soft sea spray, laced with shimmering gold accents. Those typical Dubai touches exist on steroids throughout Atlantis The Royal, from the fire breathing water features in the lobby, to the mesmerising water fountain in the grounds.
There are two options for the entry level guest rooms – either ocean- or palm-facing – and we’d recommend palm. Whichever room you pick though, expect to soak up the views from your private balcony, make a splash in the generous circular tub, and get polished and preened with all-gold amenities, including gold toothbrushes.
It’s hard to imagine being bored at Atlantis The Royal. For those that like to drop-and-flop, a private stretch of sand and
temperature-controlled royal pool await, lined with loungers and cabanas aplenty. A more VIP twist on the classic hotel pool day can be enjoyed at Nobu by the Beach, the brand’s first beach club, where tan-toppers can listen to chilled DJ sets and graze on Nobu signatures. Twenty-two floors above, there’s the awe-inspiring Cloud 22, where guests can take a dip against the backdrop of dazzling city vistas, retreat to the shade of a plush cabana, and sip masterfully mixed cocktails at the swim-up bar.
A burgeoning culinary array of no less than 17 restaurants caters to guests. A star-studded celebrity chef line-up includes Heston Blumenthal’s Dinner by Heston, Jaleo by José Andrés and La Mar, an iteration of chef Gastón Acurio’s famed Peruvian restaurant. For high-energy dining, Ling Ling ticks all the boxes with upscale Asian dishes. Then there’s more casual eateries including Seascapes, a breezy sundowner bar by the ocean; all-day dining restaurant, Gastronomy; and an American diner called Malibu. But even these have been given a royal touch through chic decor and menus that extend far beyond the basics. Take breakfast at Gastronomy, where global cuisines from around the world fill buffet counters and live cooking stations offer made-to-order eggs a dozen ways, that can be upgraded with the likes of truffle or caviar. It’s impossible to dine your way around them all in a weekend.
Room rates start from Dhs2,450 per night inclusive of breakfast and access to Lost Chambers Aquarium and Aquaventure Waterpark.

A true oasis of luxury in Abu Dhabi’s Empty Quarter...
Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is an unashamedly palatial oasis, a true ‘sand castle’ overlooked on all sides by towering dunes. It’s known as a luxury retreat for the international travel market’s seclusion seekers, offering premium pampering, walkabout wellness journeys, bedouin-inspired experiences and royal court-level service. But we wanted to check in, and check out just how well it functions as a staycation setting for families.
The journey to Qasr Al Sarab Desert Resort by Anantara is an incantation, it’s part of the resort’s spell, contributing in no small part to the experiential sense of exclusivity and secluded allure. It’s two hours from Downtown Abu Dhabi (and three hours from Dubai), along desert roads that chase an ocean of rising and crashing sand through the Empty Quarter. On your journey, way beyond the clawing shadows of skyscrapers you’ll cross over the latitudinal parallel marking the Tropic of Cancer.
UAE desert hotels represent some of the most spectacular ‘getting-away-from-it-all’ vacation opportunities available anywhere in the world. They’re a rare breed, in scenery and in the level of juxtaposition between home and holiday. And Qasr Al Sarab is perhaps the truest archetype of these sorts of resort.
This desert chateau holds 140 rooms, 14 suites and 53 pool villas (we stayed in the latter). The design themes from the hotel’s communal areas continue into the private quarters, with exquisite finishes and a romantic reverence for the bedouin lifestyle. Large private plunge pools sit in the rear of the villa and offer panoramic views of the surrounding desertscape.
Relaxation is the chief mantra at casa Qasr. And whatever that means to you. There’s plenty on offer at the spa, beyond the usual treatments and massages, a traditional Moroccan hammam with marble beds for example; an ice room; Biologique Recherchetrained therapists; desert yoga sessions; sunset meditation and more. There is a huge (supervised) kid’s club, a teen’s club, gym, padel courts and swimming pools. Desert specific activities include sandsurfing, camel riding, nature trekking, star gazing, dune buggying, archery, falconry and saluki shows, fat biking, horse riding and an alfresco cinema.
Following a comprehensive menu glow up at the hands of a locally based cheffing legend, the recently relaunched Al Falaj by Dina Macki is now serving regionally inspired aromatic awe on majlis style seating, under the stars.
Pro tip: There’s a page of special offers on the anantara.com with discounted room rates for GCC residents, bonus added extras and some attractive package inclusions. But even just going off the standard rates, you can pick up villas from around Dhs4,000, suites from Dhs3,200 and rooms from less than Dhs2,000. This isn’t shoestring budget territory, but when you compare it to similar properties, it genuinely does translate into fantastic value.
Book in for a luxurious and tropical beach escape – no plane ticket required
Few places in the UAE really offer supreme privacy quite like The Ritz-Carlton Ras Al Khaimah, Al Hamra Beach. Made up of 32 exclusive private villas with private pools, the boutique hotel offers an exclusive escape 90 minutes from Dubai.
Close to Al Marjan Island, Al Hamra Beach feels very secluded, yet is conveniently located only a short five-minute drive away from shops and amenities. The drive from Dubai flies by, and the arrival experience begins with a five-minute boat ride to the welcome jetty. Technically the hotel isn’t on an island, but this clever tactic sure makes it feel that way.
Villas are lined up along a winding path, surrounded by high white walls and an abundance of lush greenery to create a completely private setting. The beach is vast and peaceful, and guests can enjoy a range of water sports, including kayaking. The resort is long, so if your room is at the far end, you’ll need to call the buggy to get to the restaurant or lobby.
The villas are inspired by Bedouin tents – if Bedouins had impeccable taste and were partial to chic monochrome furniture. We stayed in an Al Shamal Ocean View Villa, which has a large four poster bed complete with sheer white curtains, facing a black and white leather storage unit from where a flat screen
TV rises out. There’s a large bay window with a spacious reading nook, and a tray set up on arrival for us to DIY our own cocktails. Every inch of the space oozes with luxury and all details have been considered to make guests feel at home.
Al Hamra Beach is the type of resort where you really escape from the world, so expect to spend the majority of your stay in your villa. It comes with a private pool, outdoor shower, and bathtub, as well as a long path leading towards the beach, and a sundeck at the end to watch the sunset. The pool is perfectly chilled and reaches a depth of 1.3 metres so you can properly submerge and relax, before making your way to the cabana for a spot of sunbathing. An Instagrammable floating breakfast was served not long after sunrise, on a wicker tray that balances on the water with a selection of exotic fruits, eggs, coffee, pancakes, French toast and more.
The resort has just the one restaurant, Shore House, a nautical themed all-day diner serving a variety of international dishes. Well-presented and tasty, the food is clearly an important focus for the team, ensuring that the menu includes something for everyone, from pasta and risotto to steak and seafood.
A night in the Al Bahar Tented Villa during June starts from Dhs1,680, including breakfast, beach access and private pool.

Four Seasons Resort at Jumeirah Beach remains one of Dubai’s most luxurious staycations. Facilities are plentiful, dining is top-notch, and the discreet but thoughtful service remains the jewel in the crown at this near-faultless beachfront address.
In its unmistakable shade of sand, this low-rise resort unrolls along the golden beach in Jumeirah 2. Widely regarded as one of Dubai’s most luxurious stays, Four Seasons Resort Dubai at Jumeirah Beach is an oasis of beachfront bliss, consistently accoladed as a leading light in the city’s luxury hotel scene. This resort’s array of stylish rooms and suites, dozen dining options and facilities aplenty ensure guests of all ages that check-in receive the five-star Four Seasons treatment.
With sweeping city vistas on one side and a sandy beach that rolls into the Arabian Gulf on the other, Four Seasons Resort Dubai is ideally located to offer a taste of the city while still serving as an idyllic beachfront address. A mere 10-minute drive away and you’re in the heart of Downtown, where Dubai’s star attractions are all within easy reach.
Guest rooms are split between east and west wings, a duo of lagoon-like swimming pools are set amongst lush, landscaped gardens, and just when you think you’ve dined around all of
the restaurants and bars – you realise there’s an entire village of them a short stroll away in the Restaurant Village.
A continuation of the gentle fusion of Middle Eastern splendour and contemporary elegance seen across many of the public spaces, the recently refurbished suites at Four Seasons Resort at Jumeirah Beach are a welcome upgrade. The suites –already luxurious in the fact that they’re among the biggest in the city – somehow feel even larger in modern, oceanic shades. Plush carpets offer a delicate foot hug, crisp cotton sheets are impossibly comfy, and light drapes billow softly in the breeze when the French windows open. The bathroom deserves a mention for its huge free-standing tub and waffle robes.
The extensive breakfast buffet set the tone for the spoiling array of dining options guests have here. A maze of buffet stations range from continental classics to staple breakfast dishes from India, southeast Asia and Europe, while live stations of eggs and waffles are complemented by a juice bar serving everything from healthy shots to Bloody Mary’s or protein shakes. Seaside dining doesn’t get much chicer than at Sea Fu, where pan-Asian fare is expertly crafted and designed to share while soaking up views of the sea. For a romantic evening of drinks and dining, rooftop Mercury Lounge is an after-hours delight for master mixology and grazing plates. Then there’s the array of internationally-imported and locally-renowned names that populate the Restaurant Village, just two minutes’ walk away from the resort. At Coya, enjoy a masterclass in upscale Peruvian dining, while Scalini is a fail-safe spot for Italian classics and Mimi Kakushi is one of Dubai’s finest restaurants.
A one-night stay for two in a deluxe city-view room starts from Dhs2,100 for the room only, or Dhs2,400 inclusive of breakfast. Four Seasons Resort at Jumeirah Beach, Jumeirah 2, Dubai. Tel: (0)4 270 7777. fourseasons.com/dubaijb
An island escape that feels almost international
We all know why we book a staycation, it’s to try and get as close to the real thing, even if just for a weekend, without leaving the country. So, in our eternal search for that convincingly ‘abroad’ feeling, we packed our car and headed up to Saadiyat Island. While the beachfront is well-known for its crystal-clear water, it really must be seen to be believed. The almost-Maldivian sea is the most perfect shade of light blue, and more than passes the ‘can you see the bottom?’ test.
We’re checking into Park Hyatt Abu Dhabi, where for just a weekend, we’ll be switching off from the hustle and bustle of city life and relaxing at this luxe beachfront hotel. Upon entering our room, a fresh coconut is waiting for us, and we quickly get comfortable on the balcony, taking in the oceanic air and calming sea view. It’s a spacious room with a king bed, large bathroom, and a walk-in wardrobe. The bed has been decorated with rose petals ahead of our arrival – it’s the little things.
The well-lit lobby is broad and modern, with an Arabian feel. In the evenings, a DJ takes centre stage to set the mood for the rest of the night. Over the mezzanine, guests can spy a huge
infinity pool stretching out towards the beach.
The pristine sand beach is vast and lengthy, shared with a few other five-star resorts on the island. We would’ve liked the sun loungers to be placed a little closer to the ocean though, especially in peak summer when the floor becomes actual lava. The pool is a more convenient alternative, with plenty of chic cabanas surrounding it.
Home to Argentinian restaurant, Maté, Park Hyatt’s main sell is the two-storey Latin American concept, where guests can enjoy grilled dishes from the parrilla. In the morning, breakfast is served buffet-style at The Café. Other options include Shala Beach Lounge, The Beach House and The Library.
A king bed room with sea view starts at Dhs1,055 per night in June. The room includes a furnished private balcony overlooking the Arabian Gulf.

Anantara World Islands Dubai Resort Anantara The Palm Dubai ResortFrom can-do-no-wrong gastropreneur Joey Ghazal comes Maine Ibiza, the second international opening of the Dubai-born success story. Opening for the first time this June, Maine Ibiza has transformed an 18th Century finca a short drive from Ibiza Town into the perfect spot for sun-drenched lunches and late-night dinners. Maine Ibiza features space for 200 alfresco diners, split across two levels, and promises a locally inspired menu, magnificent mixology and a dazzling entertainment programme. While elements of design will give it a distinct feel of The Maine, much of the natural beauty remains, ensuring the restaurant feels welcoming, rustic and entirely suited to its surroundings.

A lively party restaurant that’s as much about the fine French fare as it is the sparkler shows that keep the party going until the early hours, Bagatelle is now found all over the world. One of the newest additions to the Bagatelle family – which is found in London, Miami, St Tropez and Buenos Aires, as well as Dubai – is Bodrum. Having opened last year, it reopens this June for its second season on the sun-drenched shores of Yalikavak Marina, presenting upscale French Mediterranean dishes at a chic poolside location.

Dubai-born Greek restaurant Opa packed its plate-smashing, zorba-dancing ways for the French Riviera in the summer of 2021, and it’s back for the 2022 summer season. Inside the restaurant, there’s seating for 100 guests, with the fit-out very similar to that of the original in Dubai, all whitewashed with blue accents to create a scene that could be picked straight from the sun-soaked Cyclades. The menu is also very similar to that of the Dubai venue, with grilled meats, fresh salads, local fish dishes and sweet pastries.

The British capital shines bright with swanky new stays, gourmet delights, and festivals to make the most of those endless summer nights…

Another London landmark that’s undergone a complete reinvention is Battersea Power Station. While much of its industrial past remains present in the aesthetic, this Thames-side destination is now home to an array of more than 100 restaurants and shops. To check it out, base yourself at Art O’tel Battersea, located opposite the power station, a playful address with immersive interiors brought to life by Spanish artist and designer Jamie Hayon. Iberian cuisine is celebrated at skyline view Joia Restaurant, while one floor above, a heated pool and bubbling jacuzzi offer unbeatable views of the power station.

When Ace Hotel closed its doors during the early days of the pandemic, it left a hole in oh-so-cool Shoreditch for a design-centric lifestyle hotel. We’re happy to report that One Hundred Shoreditch, which opened last year, has more than filled that void. While the location may be the initial draw: the delights of the East End and thriving city centre are both with easy reach, there’s much more to this stay. Generously sized guest rooms are minimalistic and bathed in natural light, the lobby doubles up as a co-working space, and a duo of bars – one on the roof and one in the basement – each present an alluring menu of liquid libations.

The vibrant and versatile dining scene in London has cemented it as one of the world’s finest culinary capitals. So, choosing where to dine is no easy feat for global gourmands. And those decisions will only get tricker with a slew of new openings to tuck into this summer. Offering a British expression of his signature modern French dishes, guests can expect diverse menus in a welcoming setting. A little further up the road, as part of a complete renovation of a London icon, The Dorchester’s (@thedorchester) signature restaurant The Promenade reopened earlier this year. In a dazzling setting befitting of a theatrical menu of modern British dishes, like

On the rooftop of Soho’s The Now building, Tattu serves up dishes like delicious dim sum, sizzling Wagyu steaks and more against the backdrop of live DJ sets and entertainment. Foodies familiar with Big Mamma (@bigmamma. uk), the team behind eye-popping Italian eateries including Gloria and Ave Mario, can look forward to the next instalment of oh-soInstagrammable Italian dining at Carlotta, the brand’s newest venture. An intimate Italian trattoria on Marylebone High Street, it’s home to a menu of Neapolitan and Sicilian classics that have been given an Americano twist. Oh, and a ten-tiered chocolate fudge cake.

Q&A with Mike Mpuche, a field guide at Singita Pamushana in Zimbabwe.
How did you become a safari guide?
I was born in Zimbabwe, on the shores of Lake Chivero National Park, where my Father used to work. I spent most of my school holidays with him at one of the first luxury safari lodges in Zimbabwe, so I went on many game drives as a youngster where I fell in love with bush and the seed was planted. In my family of five boys and one girl, all my brothers are safari guides, and my sister is married to a guide. It runs in the family!
What is the wildest thing you’ve ever seen on a game drive?
A brown snake eagle teaching its juvenile how to hunt and kill a snake. It was fascinating to watch the parent teaching it how to attack the snake.
If you could be any animal for a day, what animal would you be?
I would be an elephant. I think they are the king of the jungle, an intelligent herd animal; very good communicators; family-oriented with sophisticated family structures and you can observe them being kind to each other.
Set realistic expectations. Some days you might see plenty of animals and other days less.
Be prepared to be around creepy crawlies – you are in the wild, after all.

Switzerland is known for chocolate box mountainscape, but at the heart of it all Zurich is the city that keeps the country ticking…
Words: Miles Buckeridge
Winter sports enthusiasts are likely well acquainted with such sophisticated Swiss slope situs as Zermatt, St. Moritz and Grindelwald. They’re home to some of the world’s best known and most exciting ski experiences, as well as glitzy-ritzy off-piste apresski opportunities. Less well known however, are the native charms of Zurich in the summertime. Between June and August, the lakefront city blossoms under the sun and fresh mountain air, giving way to one of Europe’s best kept secrets.
Held in multiple locations, across a variety of musical genres – Zurich transforms into an open-air auditorium in the summer months. Hosting festivals such as June’s Blues’N’Jazz Rapperswil sessions at Lake Zurich, the free-to-see Stadtsommer series in July, and Werdinsel Openair on Werd Island in August. Because beats just bang that bit harder in the great outdoors.
Take a hike pal
Zurich may be a city, but within its surrounds there are many ways to reconnect with nature in a visceral wholesome way. Head to one of the local ravines – we’d recommend Elefantenbachweg, accessible by the Burgwies tram stop. Here you can soak up the endless serene greens, leaf through books under the shade of trees, leap across melt water streams, or saddle up for an appropriate use of your mountain bike.
Switzerland’s F&B reputation is largely built on a mountain of chocolate, with strong supporting roles from fondue and raclette. But you’re missing out if you don’t trace their wine producing story back to its source. Many of the world class vineyards are open to the public, and offer tasting experiences so you can wax whimsical on what notes of honey and juniper you’re getting. Zweifel Winery is a family run business with a 600-year-old legacy and its vines enjoy some absolutely vintage views.
Yes, that FIVE. You can count on one hand the number of UAE residents that don’t know this luxury leisure icon (spoiler, it’ll likely be less than five). Yes the five-star, five-gun salute to the high life, FIVE now has a mega luxe pied-à-terre in Zurich. It’s home to 45 suites, 42 suite-sized lifestyle rooms, 62 ‘Amazing Rooms’, multiple international award-winning restaurants, a vibe tribe approved rooftop nightclub, outdoor social pool and lavish wellness spa with indoor pool and hot tub. Of course you can expect the same elite tier of service and attention to detail exemplified by the Dubai locations, but this first foray abroad comes with Zurich city views from the Uetliberg plateau and status as Swizerland’s only LEED Platinum hotel.
@fivezurich
This century old grand dame of the Lake Zurich waterfront looks plucked from the run time of a Wes Anderson masterpiece. An artistic building, with tasteful modern rooms, design touches such as glass elevators and city famous restaurants, La Réserve Eden au Lac feels a million miles away from the frantic urban energy of the UAE.
@lareserve_edenaulac_zurich
Caught between the Old Town and Lake Zurich, this Swiss stunner provides easy access to the Bahnhofstrasse shopping district. It’s unashamedly modern and comes with a gym, steam room, sauna and other wellness facilities. F&B highlights involve the popular Onyx Bar and Parkhuus Restaurant.
@parkhyattzurich
Climate: Few places have quite the literal glow up as Switzerland in the summertime.
Sound of Music vistas meet continental summer highs of 23ºC to 25ºC. Note though, rains can be sudden, heavy and stormy.
Language: Switzerland has four official languages (Romansh, French, German and Italian). But as you might expect from multi-linguists, English is widely spoken.
Currency: Not the Euro. Five points to everyone who said Swiss Franc.
This trendy haunt holds one of the Michelin Guide’s coveted Green Stars (for sustainable practices). Dining takes places in an artfully rustic pub setting, with comprehensive vegan and vegetarian menu options served alongside the omnivorous versions. The kitchen craft is creative, without being obnoxious, making it a worthwhile stop for adventurous foodies.
@maisonmanesse
We’ve grown kind of fondue that European style of DIY hot pot dining experience that lets you cook in oil or cheese. And you’ll find few melting pots in the city that have quite the reputation of the Swiss Chuchi. It offers a huge range of cheese and meat fondue varieties as well as the traditional raclette serving ritual.
@swisschuchi
Our recommendation for an extravagant splurge, Skin’s is contained within an old factory and is named after the skinmed clinic it sits slap bang next to. It’s a two Michellin Star restaurant with a young and (ahem) hungry kitchen team that proudly blends tradition with modern world influences and has some pretty gnarly ideas on the future of surf ‘n’ turf.

Destination: Tuscany, Italy
This summer, I am heading to the Tuscan Hills as the one-year countdown to my wedding begins. We’ll be saying “I do” at Dievole Wine Resort, a charming hotel and vineyard in Chianti. I’ve got a particularly romantic attachment to this stunning slice of Italian countryside, as it’s where we also travelled to on our first vacation, and got engaged four years later.
Destination: Athens, Greece
We’ve started slapping on stopovers on the way back from our summer trip home (to the UK). This year, our sights are set on that crucible of democracy, western society and salads with feta in them –Athens. I’m a history nerd, a huge fan of Greek food, and the idea of smashing plates without losing deposits appeals to the rest of the family – so it really is an ‘all-win’ scenario.
– Miles Buckeridge, Senior Online ReporterDestination: Seoul, South Korea
Since I’m into Korean drama, I tend to adapt to their culture from food to fashion to music. So, every time I watch K-Drama I dream of travelling to Seoul, Korea and exploring some of the Mapo district, which is famous for its traditional Korean BBQ restaurants. I can’t wait to try their speciality dishes, such as charcoalgrilled pork and aged kimchi, then visit a traditional pub and go for a market tour with my family.
– Sheila Deocareza, Art DirectorDestination: Cyprus
Nothing quite says ‘summer vaycay’ like lounging around on European island Cyprus. I’ll be checking out the stunning scenery, coupled with the country’s incredible history and, of course, gorgeous beaches to top up my tan before I return to the sauna that is Dubai. –
Shelby Gee,Junior Reporter
Destination: Bali, Indonesia
After my 2020 Bali travel plans never came to fruition, I’m still desperate to go. This summer will finally be the time I get to visit the beautiful rice fields, incredible beaches, trendy beach clubs, and stay in a huge villa. My only concern is that I won’t want to come back!
– Elise Kerr, Deputy EditorDestination: Florence, Italy
My love for renaissance art is one of the sole reasons I would visit Florence. From paintings and sculptures, the galleries and museums, the cathedrals (high on my list is the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore) and so much more, I plan to soak in as much as I can. And while I’m there, I will, of course, indulge in as much divine Italian food as possible from pasta to pizza and all the tiramisu. –
Aarti Saundalkar, Online ReporterDestination: Dubai, UAE
Dare I say it, I rather enjoy summer in Dubai. There’s the discounted pool and hotel deals, plenty of indoor familyfun, quieter shopping malls, day trips to Fujairah (where the sea is always that bit cooler) and making the most of the early mornings and late evenings. Bliss! –
Tamara Wright, Online ReporterDestination: Brazil
I have dreamt about going to South America for the last five years, and this summer, long after our pandemic stress, I will finally be going to Brazil. This luscious, exotic and vibrant country has always fascinated me, with its beautiful coastal towns and cities, tropical islands, Portuguese culture and bosa nova music. I’ll be travelling from the south, passing through Rio, and up to the north to the pristine beaches of Itacaré. I can’t wait.
