Can you talk us through your career? I was born and raised in Tahiti, in the middle of the Pacific. Surrounded by nature and vast ocean, as well as its endless beauty, shaped every corner of my mind and being. I learnt how to surf before I could walk, and surfing became our way of life. I became a professional surfer at the age of 15, which led me to travel the world in search of perfect waves and empty lineups. This amazing adventure was followed by a transition into modelling, which was an incredible opportunity and journey. After I completed a Bachelor of Commerce at Sydney University, I yearned to create something of substance. My dream was to create a line that reflected my values – to produce for women and doing it with a conscious mind. Protecting our environment has been a cause close to my heart since I can remember and turning that passion into creating Abysse has been a magnificent journey through celebrating and creating for women that love the ocean as much as I do. What inspired you to go into the fashion industry? My initial goal was to create functional products for women that love the ocean but without compromising design and aesthetics. Abysse aims to blur the lines between fashion and function because we believe that one is not exclusive of the other. It was the main drive behind building and creating a brand that was not defined by the standard fast fashion pyramidal system. The goal is to always create a garment that is fashionable but functional above all else. My goal is to fill a niche, to fill the gap in the market, where women need technical designs to perform in the ocean as well as a timeless fashionable design that will empower them in and out of the water. How did launching your own brand come about? It was a very natural evolution. I have been incredibly lucky to have been surrounded by truly incredible people in my journey, that have believed in my vision from the start. My passion for the ocean, surfing and the environment was incredibly strong since I was a little island girl, and this drive has carried me throughout the years. Abysse was based on these values: produce well and produce less – that was instilled in me from a very young age. What does Abysse represent? Abysse to me represents a strong conscious female voice. It represents the ability to use our nature’s resources sustainably, in order to enhance and empower female beauty. It is made with soul for women that love the ocean, that thrive by pushing their own boundaries. You co-founded the brand with your mother. What has it been like building this brand together? It has been such a dream creating Abysse with my mother. Mum and I have always had an incredible bond. She has always been my rock, my guiding light in anything I do, and she was the first to believe in my vision. To have her by my side, day in and out has been an absolute solace. Business can be hard and tough but knowing that someone’s got your back no matter what, is truly liberating. We support and empower each other, learn from each other and grow together with the same goals. How has your fashion brand evolved since you started it? Our ethos and ideals are the same as the first day we started, but we have been able to expand our range exponentially and that has been such an incredible experience. Working with new technologies, designing for a broader market, making pieces that are versatile and can be worn in and out of the ocean has always been our goal, but to slowly grow our categories to reflect our Abysse DNA has been incredible.

What does your design process look like? The process of design always comes from a need. I do think that design should be subtle, and overdesigning pieces is sometimes inadequate for a sustainable brand. We always try to accommodate a need in our market and try to create versatile pieces that reflect a solution. Our pieces are meant to be timeless, and we always keep in mind that a piece will be designed for several collections. I absolutely love looking back in the archives, as I always draw so much inspiration from the past. Fashion is circular. What sets Abysse apart from other sustainable brands? At Abysse, we make a conscious choice to make a difference. Being a conscious manufacturer means to take back power and support what we stand for. We define ourselves as a sustainable brand by embodying these aspects: by being a small family business, women-owned, locally produced, using recycled materials from the beginning to the end of our value chain – from packaging to production – and by supporting charities that we believe in. By achieving the above, we aim to create an impact and set our own long-term trend. What are your thoughts on fast fashion? Long-lasting fashion is the key. Instilling and educating young generations that well-made garments are meant to be bought and worn for years, mended and then recycled is also a key part of this cycle. It is really easy to get caught up in a vicious circle of trends and fast fashion but believing and supporting brands that do make a difference is so much more rewarding. Fashion is the most polluting industry. Awareness and understanding that slow fashion works and believing that buying less but more quality is empowering. What have been the hurdles you have experienced in relation to your business? The hardest part for us has been to produce our garments with all the high standards we set for the brand. We consider ourselves to be a sustainable brand, which incurs a lot more costs and low margins, but we are not willing to compromise our ethos for dollars. It is not always easy being truly sustainable, but it is a state of mind. We have been incredibly blessed that our consumers feel the same way and have truly resonated with our journey. And what are the milestones? We have had too many amazing milestones to count. From working with our biggest muses such as Elle Macpherson, to selling our pieces on NET-A-PORTER and Browns fashion, it has been such a wild ride. What resonates the most is the people that you meet along the way that love your brand, that push you to create and evolve and that at the end make you a better person and company. One of our main goals has always been to break down the concept that an eco-friendly item cannot be fashionable or as performant. I think we have absolutely proven that, and that makes my heart so happy. What are your future plans for the business? To grow slowly and steadily. To keep making the right choices. To expand and refine. To work and collaborate with our idols and heroes. To keep reaching our goals. To inspire and be inspired. To keep educating younger generations. To support more amazing women throughout their journeys. This is ‘The Summer Escape Issue’ – which of your designs do you think is the go-to for this summer? I love the Maya & Misty for minimal tan lines in the summer. I wear the Billie surf suit out in the ocean almost every day and love the open-back design of this piece. Lastly, the Shaffer & Greta is my new favourite combo to spend my days in, from home to walking to the beach – it’s perfect!

How would you define your taste DNA? I would say masculine with a feminine touch! How do you balance creating content with driving revenue? For me creating in itself is my main priority. It is the thing in life which gives me energy and the feeling of freedom. From the first moment I started my platform, I started it out of a love for fashion, photography and styling. With every image, I want to tell an authentic story. I believe that because I’ve started from the point of pure creativity I can say that at this moment in my career I am fortunate to work with partners who really understand and see the value of creativity. Therefore the creative and commercial parts come together very naturally. Additionally, I love the challenge of seeing and creating beauty with every (commercial) collaboration I do. What do you feel is most important when building your own brand? Staying unique and true to myself. There is no one like you and I’m trying to show that. I also try to push for higher standards every time I’m shooting something. It needs to be better than the previous shoots. This really keeps me motivated and excited. It’s also good to take a rest sometimes because our job can become very overwhelming. Sometimes finding inspiration can be very challenging and that’s when I know I have to take a little break. Breaks are totally fine. What advice would you give any entrepreneur starting out? To just do it. This is also how I started, you don’t need to think that you need more to start. Do you pack different fabrics differently? When it’s a summer destination I like to wear a lot of silk and linen. I don’t pack my items differently, but what I do is when I have more than one suitcase with me I like to separate my looks into categories in my suitcase. So, for example the more daily and casual looks in one suitcase and the more evening look in another one. I also do the same when it’s a work trip, styling in one suitcase and my looks in the other. Which travel steamer do you recommend? I recommend the Handheld Steamer from Steamery. I recently discovered this Scandi brand and started using the steamer on all my travels. What are the 3 pieces you cannot travel without? My camera, moisturizer and a swimsuit. What’s your fail-safe flight attire? A comfy tracksuit and sneakers are a must. I don’t like to bring a carry-on suitcase with me so I usually bring a shopper with me and a small bag that I can have with me during the flight with all my essentials. Do you have an in-flight beauty regime? Absolutely, I try to fly with no makeup so I can moisturize my face during the flight. I usually have cotton pads with me and a few of my products to put on. A moisturizing creme, hydrating serum, and mist are always by my side. I also try to drink a lot of water when I’m flying.

AICHA ABDOUN, PHOTOGRAPHER What do the first 30 mins of your day look like, your morning routine? I’m definitely not a morning person and with a lack of routine, I mostly spend the first 30 mins of my day sorting out the plan for the day ahead. How do you prepare for a shoot in terms of research? I always start with creating a moodboard based on the location or theme. Then I like to dive into the history of everything related to the subject, this inspires me a lot. I can read for hours and hours about it once it catches my interest. In that process, I analyze and visualize what I read and see into our own shoot and write down ideas that pop up in my mind. From that I build a shot list based on the knowledge I gained in the research phase. The shotlist is very important for the next steps where we connect all components. I’m very much of a control freak and like to have written down exactly what we’re about to shoot. I only feel prepared for a shoot when I went through all aspects like styling, hair, makeup, location, light, and composition. What has been the biggest advantage, working together to create content? I mostly value the way we motivate each other in the process of creating but also as the artists behind the cre-

ation. We both aim for the best and push each other to achieve that by being very strict and honest. Having a creative partner gives a lot of creative freedom. How do you define your taste DNA? Creating a perfect balance between recognizable beauty and unrecognizable art is what defines me as an artist. I try to see beauty in everything, everyone. And sometimes you can name it... sometimes you only feel it. I want to make you see and feel how I like to see the world. That way of control, how I can make you see and feel something, is my main goal with every image I take. And then it’s still a process, there’s so much I want to create and discover in my own style/DNA. That’s what makes it fun, knowing you’re never done learning, trying, creating. How do you balance creating content with driving revenue? Do you know what Helmut Newton said when he proposed to his wife June, he told her, “We will never be rich, we’ll always be poor and photography will always be my first love, you will be my second.” Of course, driving revenue is needed and financial independence gives a lot of space for inspiration but the more specific I’m becoming as a photographer the less I care about paid jobs. I believe in the bigger picture so I’m spending most of my time and thereby money on my career. What do you feel is most important when building your own brand? Knowing why you want to build your brand, knowing who you are, what makes you unique and what makes you happy. If you can answer these questions by staying true to yourself, nothing can hold you down from achieving your goals. You just have to put in the work, do what feels good for you and have faith that things will unfold the way that’s best for you. What advice would you give any entrepreneur starting out? Enjoy the process, that’s 99% of the fun. We want materialism, careers, and relationships because we think it will give us happiness. But remember as soon as you get that certain thing, you will want more, you will want different things. Goals are only our guidance to keep moving in certain directions. Taking control of your own future and having faith in what you do is the real fun part, the process of developing. What do you always pack when you travel? Face wash, my camera, and a way too overdressed dinner look. This is ‘The Summer Escape Issue’. Where would you like to escape to this year? This summer I want to eat pasta next to Lake Como in Italy. Dive into the clear blue waters and dance the night away at the Côte d’Azur, France. And last but not least, go horse riding on the beach in Essaouira, Morocco.

Founded by Jane Frances in 2013, the UKbased brand has gone from strength-tostrength and is now loved by some of the biggest names in the industry. What inspired you to go into the fashion industry? A great passion for fabrics, texture and tone. I was drawn to footwear design during my studies when I developed a particular interest in architecture and furniture design. Each of these studies lends itself naturally to shoe design and I quickly fell for the more sculptural and technical side of footwear. In a sense, shoe design is like architecture for the foot – it requires a strong technical understanding and from the very beginning I wanted to know more, I was fascinated by the detail and precision involved and really threw myself into the artisan production process. How did launching your own brand come about? I always wanted to start my own label and had been interested in branding and creative development from a young age. After my studies, I worked with a footwear factory in Italy, where I learned the age-old techniques of Italian shoe production from some of the most experienced artisans in the country. It was through this process that I truly refined my own style and noticed a need in the market for quality classics with a refined, modern simplicity. I focused on the quality of materials and craftsmanship, offering pared-back and versatile styles, which can be worn from day through to night. How do you ensure quality craftsmanship remains integral? Quality is central to our ethos. All Dear Frances shoes are made by hand at a family-owned and operated factory in Italy. They, like us, are passionate about the process involved in ensuring equal care goes into every pair we make. Emphasis is on classic design with a modern twist and always using the finest Italian leathers and craftsmanship. The materials range from supple kid leathers and soft suedes to natural wood and high-quality Perspex, to the more modern mesh and intricate weaves. What does your design process look like? Our approach focuses on the quality of materials and craftsmanship, keeping things simple, paring back the fuss and focusing on detail, texture and tone. We start with the silhouette, focusing on toe shape, heel height and fit. There are many steps involved in ensuring the perfect fit, a millimetre here or there can make all the difference and I am relentless in getting this just right. Our shapes are often inspired by furniture design, following unexpected curves at the toe or surprising lines at the heel. Once the shape is approved, we look to texture and materials to inspire new designs. We play around with new textures and interesting colour combinations

and we spend time at ateliers in Italy, where we work to develop new artisanal concepts, colours and prints. These ideas then come back to our studio where we work to blend artisan detail with modern design. What sets Dear Frances apart from other sustainable brands? The essence of our sustainable approach is our desire to slow fashion down, by focusing on investment pieces that can be worn time and again, season after season. We strongly believe in reverting back to quality, long-lasting styles, with ethical material choices. I think there is something to be said for having a classic wardrobe that’s edited just right so you always know what to reach for each day. Our factory and suppliers share the same beliefs and ethos that we do. We work with a family-run factory in Italy, who have a great respect and appreciation for the techniques and craftsmanship involved in traditional Italian shoe. What have been the main hurdles you have experienced since you started the brand? Managing and juggling all aspects of the business was certainly challenging when we first launched. From design to production, sales to PR and distribution – we initially managed all facets in-house, which quickly became very demanding. However, I truly believe this is the best way to learn and it places you in good stead when starting your own label. You quickly learn what’s required for running each aspect of your business so when you do eventually outsource certain elements, you’re better equipped to manage expectations and to manage the many roles within your company. How are you combatting the effects of the fast fashion industry with your sustainable brand? There is a strong emphasis on producing shoes that endure and styles that outlive trends. We source locally, working with tanneries and heel suppliers in the same town as our factory, which helps to reduce unnecessary transportation. Ethical production begins at the source and we trace our components right back to the raw material. Our suppliers work with small, local farmers, sharing the same social and ethical values as us. We focus on the use of organic and nontoxic dyes, minimising waste through small run production and decreasing unnecessary transportation by sourcing locally and supporting the artisan trade in Italy. To further support our belief in a move towards a circular economy we partner with aligned organisations such as Soles4Souls to help save lightly worn shoes from ending up in landfill and instead distribute these to people in need. You have a global clientele including many celebrities. Who has been the most high-profile person to wear your designs? Celebrities have

been incredibly responsive to our designs. Selena Gomez, Kendall Jenner, Bella Hadid, Margot Robbie and Amal Clooney have been loyal supporters of the brand from the start. Each season, we receive an overwhelming response from celebrities with many preordering styles ahead of new drops. Editors and style influencers have also embraced the label, so we’re thrilled to see so many people wearing and enjoying Dear Frances designs. Has slowing the fashion cycle always been the goal? What we can learn from years of fast fashion is that it creates a never-ending pressure to keep up and consume products at a rate that is clearly not sustainable. There is something very calming about stepping back from this cycle of consumption. Investing in quality classics that are designed to last – pieces that will form the

building blocks of a minimalist wardrobe – and therefore buying less, is an empowering and highly satisfying choice that we can all make. I have always felt passionate about this and now even more so than ever. What are the future plans for the business? We are extremely excited about what’s to come for Dear Frances, we have ambitious plans for the growth of the brand and among a number of exciting seasonal collections, our sourcing and design teams have been working hard on delivering our first Eco Vegan Collection. We have partnered with the most innovative suppliers in Italy, working with exciting fruit pulp materials, which align with our brand’s slow fashion ethos, whilst staying true to our ultra-soft and comfortable roots. We have also launched a Tmall Global store for our China based customers and whilst we are a digitally native brand we have recently launched a number of retail partnerships to bring Dear Frances to physical store locations around the world. We will be working with Nordstrom in the USA, Galeries Lafayette in France, David Jones in Australia and a number of other luxury retailers globally.

Guia Cleps, Founder of Italian swimwear brand Reina Olga, on what inspired her to create form-fitting designs that champion every body shape What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? My son usually wakes me up around 8am and brings me a gift which he places on my pillow every morning. The gifts range from flip-flops, a roller-skate and a tooth brush! We then all have breakfast together and if I’m lucky enough, I get a 30 second window to put on my contact lenses, change outfits two to three times depending on how many times I manage to stain my shirt, then brush my teeth and eventually head out for a coffee and a walk with our dog, Alice. What lies at the heart of Reina Olga’s brand DNA? Fun! Our DNA is to be lighthearted and never take ourselves too seriously. We want to laugh as much as possible each and every day and have a blast. This is what our team is made of and all we can hope for is that our branding portrays that to our clients. Have you had any mentors to guide you on the right path since launching the brand? Not really, I started Reina Olga in 2014 when the rules of the game had been turned sideways

– social media and the democratization of e-commerce turned a new page for the fashion industry, so I just had to get on with it and trust my gut. You design with all body shapes in mind, tell us more? I think it’s normal for women to have variations in weight and body perception over the years. This is what happened to me, I started Reina Olga when I was at my slimmest. Eventually when I was pregnant and postpartum, I ended up changing into so many body types, which made me aware of the importance to not just think of one body type. Which Reina Olga piece suits everyone? There are a lot, but the first one that comes to mind is the ‘For a Rainy Day’ one piece, I have been wearing the same prototype for around seven years and I love it more and more every time I wear it, despite the changes that my body went through over the years. What is your approach to scaling the business? I think at a certain point, you have to look around and ask yourself, would I be happy if my life looked like this, like today

and for the rest of my life? I’ve reached that point where my team is my family, we go on all sorts of adventures together, as it’s still small enough to do this kind of thing and be really close. In terms of business, we are stocked in the most luxurious boutiques worldwide, we have great e-commerce and have just opened a stunning little shop in Sardegna. We all work hard but still have time to dedicate to other things we are passionate about. It’s fun to grow but it’s also super important to be happy with what you have already achieved, without feeling the urge to move on to the next thing. What has been the biggest challenge since launching and how did you overcome this? Building a great team as it has literally been the single most difficult part without a doubt. I’m not sure how it all happened, but it’s now the six of us and it’s pure magic. How has social media supported the growth of the brand and which platform has been most valuable? If it weren’t for social media we wouldn’t be sitting here having this conversation today. Instagram is by far the most valuable platform, as it gives everyone a voice and the possibility to share something tangible, without needing to pay for the air time. How did you find your way into the beauty space? I found my way into the beauty space because being a part of someone’s self-love and self-care journey is what inspires me. I started a skincare company because the skin has such a profound impact on how we feel about ourselves. Listening to what our customers need and crafting products that change the way they feel about themselves is what I love most about being in this industry. What was the process of starting your own brand like? A lot of trial and error! The brand has grown drastically since we launched over a decade ago and to this day, I am still very hands-on in every part of the business, from product formulation to marketing, and even our client care team. It is very important to me to be involved and support my team. How has Sunday Riley evolved since it launched in 2009? We have only kept one product from the beginning days of the brand. It takes a long time to get a formula right and if I know there is something that can be changed or improved, I’ll do it.

What is the best way to combat this naturally? Fine lines can, amongst other things, be linked to surface dehydration, a result of a decrease in collagen production or a combination of both. I would recommend to have your skin checked by a professional, so you can target your specific issue in the right way. The key ways to combat this are: wear sun protection daily – a minimum of SPF 30

It all depends on what kind of mood I am in, how tired I am and how much time I’ve got.
