Time to Begin

Melika Yazdjerdi, Co-founder of Perpétuel and Ashfields

Consultancies on the art of watch collecting for beginners

WORDS: SARAH JOSEPH

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? My schedule has changed a lot since I had my twins recently and my time is really determined by them. Most days my morning starts at 4 am or 5 am and the routine begins with feeding and play time with the twins before getting ready for work.

What is the first thing you look for when purchasing a watch? When it comes to timepieces, the factors that matter to me can vary depending on whether it’s a vintage timepiece or modern watch. I tend to value the story behind fine independent watches, while for vintage timepieces, the brand history and movement are what I focus on.

What should one learn as a beginner watch enthusiast?

I believe that the foundation of one’s collecting journey is crucial, and I always advise those interested in horology to consider their motivations for starting a collection. Another important factor is to start with what personally resonates with you. Regardless of the watch’s value or your budget, what’s most important is that it brings you joy and satisfaction when you wear it.

How do you determine whether a timepiece is worth collecting? The value of a timepiece really depends on its history and story. For example, if you are buying a historical or vintage timepiece, the value is often determined by the rarity of the piece and the sentiment in the collecting community. In terms of modern watches, the fine independent brands have a lot to offer and, in my opinion, they are the future of the collector’s journey. These brands are driven by passion and often the value of these timepieces come from their technical perfection and the support from the collecting community.

What do you find fascinating about horology and how did your love for watches begin? My love for watches and the horological industry stems from the amazing people I have met along the way. These individuals have had a profound impact on how I perceive watches, collecting, and the industry as a whole. Their knowledge and passion have inspired me to maintain my own passion for this fascinating field.

What are your favourite timepieces? The Krayon Anywhere, the Singer Reimagined Flytrack, the Roger W. Smith series 1, and my vintage Patek Philippe Nautilus.

How would you describe the watch collecting trend in the Middle East? The collecting community has truly evolved and expanded over the past five years, and it is really refreshing to see so many collectors moving towards fine independent brands. We have also noticed that collectors, both male and female, are less inclined to collect jewelled watches which used to be very popular in the past. Now collectors are mainly focused on the technical aspects of the timepiece along with the story and legacy of the brand. This is The Horology Issue – how do you use your time wisely? I hold my time in high regard, recognizing it as a valuable commodity that deserves to be spent wisely. To that end, I prioritise spending my time with loved ones, engaging in activities that bring me joy, and constantly seeking out new learning opportunities. I am selective with the people and situations I invest my time in, choosing to focus on those that align with my values and bring positive energy into my life.

Staying Ahead

Sophie Hill, Founder and CEO of Threads

Styling, talks about the evolution of the personal shopping market and how being fearless helps them stay ahead of the curve

How has Threads Styling evolved since it launched and which categories have seen the biggest growth to date? Threads has been serving Millenials and Gen Z for a decade. We have always been a full solution for all things luxury. That means, we can help you with your head to toe looks and your next interior projects. We can also help you pro-

cure the most precious of items such as rare watches, pieces of fine jewellery or a unique gift for someone special. Threads Gen: This was launched to make sure we understood the younger customer. We do, however, say it is a Threads Gen state of mind and inclusive to all ages that are in the mood for Gen led styling. Which brands in terms of watches drive the

most year-over-year growth? Our top three most requested brands are always Rolex, Audemars Piguet and Patek Philippe. What details do you need to show when converting watch clients online and is scarcity a factor? Scarcity is almost always a factor. One of the things we pride ourselves most on at Threads is the ability to source any watch no matter how limited it is.

What does the resale watch market look like for Threads Styling in comparison to bags? We only source watches via very trusted partners. Each source goes through a rigorous vetting process, ensuring our clients are receiving the best quality and access in the business. What have been the driving factors in the growth of the personal shopping market and has the resale market played a pivotal role in this? In luxury, which historically has always been bricks and mortar, expert advice and service have always been an important part of the shopping experience. When the world of luxury moved online, the part around expertise and personalised service became an afterthought – versus being a core part of the business. We didn’t believe the two were mutually exclusive and we wanted to use technology to drive a new generation of personalised shopping. We believe the use of technology to drive personalised service is the real accelerator. The resale market is simply a category of product that clients expect to have access to.

How do you consistently innovate as a business? Never be afraid to try things that other people have not. Never be afraid to fail and most importantly, if you do, try again. After almost a decade and a half in the industry, what have been your biggest learnings? An idea is easy to come by, execution is everything. Do you have a favourite timepiece, and does it hold a special memory for you? I like different watches for different occasions/ moods but one of my favourite classic pieces is the Bulgari Serpenti, as it is an absolute icon that is always in style and beyond chic. I also love the Cartier Crash, it is just an unbelievable piece of horology.

This is The Horology Issue – time is precious, how do you maximise your time? I challenge myself constantly to use time efficiently – as a CEO, I constantly ask myself “Is this action the best use of my time against our company mission,” and if it isn’t, I simply stop.

Timeless Investments

Remy Julia, Christie’s Director

Watches Middle East, discusses the art of the watch auction process both digital and offline

Auction houses remain the primary access to rare and vintage luxury timepieces, allowing collectors to acquire them with peace of mind. Christies has been an important platform for some of the biggest watch auctions in recent years. Christie’s renowned bi-annual Watches Online: The Dubai Edit, ongoing until the 4th of May, presents a curated selection of 138 noteworthy novelties from the most sought-after brands that are going under the hammer, attracting old and new generations of watch collectors.

Talk us through the auction process for vintage and contemporary pieces and how these pieces are selected. The Watch Department at Christie’s Dubai strives to curate an auction that offers collectors as well as seasoned and first-time buyers the chance to acquire some of the most collectible and in-demand timepieces. The Dubai Edit comprises a mix of modern and vintage pieces and takes place twice a year. Curation is driven by demand and relevance. Sometimes as we begin consigning, if we spot a pattern or notice that a particular watch

presented on our platforms – website and app, digitally with multiple images, a complete description of the watch, and a condition report prepared by one of our highly experienced watch specialists based in the Middle East. The final price is dictated by the market at auction during which clients bid online until the sale closes lot by lot on the final day of the online auction. What does it take to successfully buy and sell a rare novelty at an auction? The timepiece – it could be a wristwatch, a rare pocket watch, or a desk clock has to be desirable, something that has been on a collector’s wish list, or a rare example of a limited edition that is highly soughtafter. If a timepiece like this is consigned and there is an attractive market estimate, this will drive a level of interest and is more likely to lead to competitive bidding. Our team of watch specialists around the globe is involved in every auction and they inform and advise their clients about bidding and buying. For an online auction, bidding can be done from anywhere in the world which makes online sales more accessible and enables the Dubai Edit: Watches Online to attract international registrants and bidding. Do you see both clients investing in pieces to keep for a lifetime and others looking at these purchases more as an investment? Both scenarios tend to play out – some timepieces are for keeps and find a permanent place in their collection. Some are bought merely as investments – a highly portable asset class but one driven by the collector’s own style and passion as well as their own desire to create a collection as an asset. As years go by, taste and trends change as well and we find that collectors regularly revisit their collection with our team and will decide to consign a piece for sale that may no longer meet their criteria for a growing collection. This is where the expertise, experience, and opinion of our team of watch specialists are key and make all the difference when a collector requires expert service in the curation of a collection.

might be the missing piece of the sale, we try and find one that can fill that requirement anticipating the demand. It takes expertise and skill, as well as a finger on the pulse of the market to curate an auction that has something for everyone – from the most seasoned collectors to watch aficionados at an early stage of collecting trying to set out the direction of their collector’s journey. What are the different factors that determine the value of each piece? There are three factors that decide how well a watch does at the auction: rarity, condition, and provenance. Watches are presented locally in the UAE and internationally in our Christie’s offices for approximately two weeks during which, clients can see and try them before the auction goes live online. The watches are also

Auction viewings afford a great opportunity for potential bidders to interact with the exceptional pieces up close prior to sale. Are these viewings free and open to the public? Yes, the preview is open to the public and everyone is welcome. It’s a great opportunity to get a hands-on look at some rare watches. There are specialists present at the preview and I would urge those interested in watches to have a conversation with them to learn more. We are always happy to talk to people about watches and share our combined passion and knowledge whether you are a firsttime buyer or looking for a particular model. What do you think, personally, are the women’s timepieces standouts in this year’s Watches Online: Dubai Edit? A full gold Patek Philippe Aquanaut Ref. 5066J with

40 emirateswoman.com FASHION

matching bracelet; the stylish Patek Philippe Nautilus Ref. 3800; a vintage Rolex Datejust Ref.69028 set with sapphires and diamonds; a vintage gold Vacheron Constantin with sapphires on the dial and the Hashemite Crown crest on the dial; a vintage Piaget gold and lapis lazuli-set wristwatch; a vintage white gold Audemars Piguet DayDate wristwatch.

As pioneers, how does Christie’s localise its expertise for its auctions such as Watches Online: Dubai Edit? Developing our relationships and engaging with existing and new clients across the Gulf on a very regular basis; identifying and consistently finding timepieces that are relevant and important to this region and being able to bring the very best models and brands to auction enables us to continue to meet the expectations and tastes of our regional clientele.

How does Christie’s approach client development and retention? Our client service, quality of expertise, and brand reputation combined contribute to why collectors come to Christie’s but ultimately it is the quality and breadth of the timepieces in the bi-annual Watches Online: The Dubai Edit which brings clients back and attracts new clients from around the world.

How has technology changed the role of auctions in today’s market? Our online auctions enable clients from all over the world to bid. It also enables clients to monitor interest in a timepiece in real time until the day that the sale closes online. On average each Dubai online auction has around 700-900 participants from more than 40 countries across the world. During the auction, we sometimes speak to clients in the Far East and Australia in the morning and engage with those on the West Coast in America in the evenings. Applications like WhatsApp and Zoom have brought the world closer, and it is no longer unusual to sell highvalue timepieces online. In April 2021, a rare Patek Philippe Ref. 5002P sold for $1.5 million at an online auction in Dubai – at that time, it was a record for the most expensive wristwatch ever sold on any online platform. With the rise of second-hand and circular fashion, how does Christie’s stay at the fore-

front of luxury? Through the strength of our curation and expertise. Aside from watches, Christie’s has thriving handbags and jewels departments that also offer for sale via the secondary market some of the most soughtafter luxury pieces from the top brands in the market today.

Which has been the most exceptional piece you’ve ever seen sold at auction and to which country was it sold? I have to say that to date the watch I am the most emotionally attached to is a watch I found (or that found me): the Haile Selassie Patek Philippe Ref 2497 which sold for CHF2.9 million in Geneva, May 2017. An exceptionally important, possibly unique and previously unknown 18K gold perpetual calendar wristwatch

with sweep centre seconds, moon phases, black luminous military-style dial, luminous Alpha hands, engraved case back, formerly the property of His Majesty, King of Kings, Emperor Haile Selassie I of Ethiopia. This is The Horology Issue – time is precious, how do you optimize your own time for productivity or pace? I like to plan my week and set short objectives for the day for the team and I like to respect moments so I tend not to take more than three appointments per day in order to spend quality time with the other party to understand exactly how we can help and assist. We are in a business where relationships and reputation are everything, and we must invest time in nurturing and building them. Time truly is a precious commodity.

A Rare Breed

Private Label London creates bespoke and sources rare timepieces for global clients. Commercial Director Alys McMahon discusses business and the search for rarity

WORDS: CAMILLE MACAWILI

Private Label London prides itself as sourcing experts – talk us through the process and how you secure the rarest pieces? We have a global network of partners we work closely with, allowing us to source at exactly the right time. Being able to execute a purchase quickly on a rare piece and at the right price is what sets us apart. For bespoke pieces, how do you work with a client on crafting a customised watch? It

is important to recognise that clients have varied lifestyles and showing them options on how to make their own piece unique to them takes a considered approach. For example, we find out what the piece will be used for (whether for sports, more occasionally, or every day) or what is important to them long term (whether it’s durability, trends, or longer-term value). From here, we can advise and showcase differing fin-

ishes, adornments and colours that make each timepiece unique to the client. Time is a real luxury – how does this service save time for clients who are time poor? Our end clients are fast movers, their lifestyles are constantly evolving and design quality is at the heart of any purchases that they make. We constantly research new designs and technologies bringing them to life via digital imagery so that the client can quickly

42 emirateswoman.com FASHION

and clearly see the end result. We are currently working on a new concept which will give clients an even faster service, it is expected to launch this September. Are there any restrictions to the scale of customisation and how long does the entire process usually take? Everything is possible within reason, there are natural materials and minerals that would be better explored within jewellery or artworks versus watches so we work with clients to understand their expectations around the end result and ensure the quality and integrity of the timepiece are not compromised. Our pieces can vary in production times, anything from two weeks plus depending on the final design. Do you see buying patterns in the Middle East in terms of sales, and which brands are driving sales in the Middle East? We see a huge influence from the Middle East to the rest of the world, luxury is a given and individuality is key. We are seeing the biggest watchhouses evolving in younger markets with larger disposable incomes, and these include customised Patek Philippe and Audemars Piguet pieces.

How do you approach maintaining quality, exclusivity, and authenticity? We set out to create a watch brand that works for both traditionalists and trailblazers so we are constantly asking ourselves how what we do appeals to both types of clients. This means we can explore wider options and use each client as our target for feedback. What should we be investing in when it comes to looking at long-term uplift in value? Rolex steel models still continue to perform well. Whilst the market has been shifting over the last year, you will still find good value investments over a longer period – Patek Philippe rose gold models will continue to hold their value.

Throughout your career, what has been the most remarkable piece you’ve created or sourced for a client? It has to have been one

of my very first Patek Philippe watches I ever sourced on behalf of a client. It was a men’s World Time 5131P which, at the time, they were slowing in production due to the artisan enameller at Patek Philippe losing their eyesight before training the upcoming artisans and so could not produce the very centre of the dial. I was lucky enough to secure a piece for my client in the end. Now that piece is worth over $220,000 but it was for a watch enthusiast building their collection and I was honoured to have secured it for them. This is The Horology Issue – how do you optimise your own time for efficiency? Everything I do has to count for something, whether I am enjoying downtime or developing new concepts in business. I set alarms for myself so that I ensure I spend my time as I intend – I love calendar invitations for everything!

The Timekeeper

How Irina Ciobanu started the first UAEbased Ladies Watch Club

WORDS: JOELLE ALBEAINO

What do the first 30 mins of your day look like? Your morning routine. As a parent of a toddler, my morning routine can be quite hectic, but I try to keep it as consistent as possible. The first 30 minutes of my day typically involve waking up at around 7:00 am, getting out of bed and following that, I head to the bathroom to brush my teeth and wash my face. I then make my way to my toddler’s room to check on him and give him a good morning hug. Once we are finished

with our morning cuddles, we have breakfast, which usually consists of oatmeal with nuts and fruits. After finishing breakfast, I begin to get myself and my toddler dressed and ready for the day. By that time the first 30 minutes of my day have passed. I’m usually now ready to tackle whatever the day has in store for me. Despite the chaos that can come with being a parent, having a consistent morning routine helps me feel grounded and ready to take on the day. Tell us about your passion for watches –How did it start? Over the years, my passion for watches has only grown stronger. I’ve collected a variety of watches from different brands and eras, each with its own unique story and significance. For me, watches represent not just a functional device to tell time, but also a piece of history and a work of art that can be appreciated for generations to come. Overall, my passion for watches has given me a greater appreciation for the importance of craftsmanship and attention to detail in all aspects of life and has brought me endless joy and satisfaction over the years.

This is the first UAE-based Ladies Watch Club – what inspired you to launch it? The idea for launching came from my personal passion for watches and my observation

64 emirateswoman.com FASHION
IMAGE: SUPPLIED

that there were very few forums or clubs dedicated exclusively to women watch enthusiasts. I noticed that most watch clubs and events were dominated by male members and catered mostly to their interests and preferences.

As a female watch enthusiast, I felt the need to create a space where women could come together, share their love for watches, and learn from each other. I wanted to create a community that was welcoming, inclusive, and empowering for women who share a common interest in watches. Moreover, I wanted to provide a platform where women could learn about the history, craftsmanship, latest trends in the watch industry and network with other likeminded women. I am proud to have created a space where women can come together to share their love for watches and support each other in pursuing their passions.

How many women are in the Ladies Watch Club? Talk us through the selection process. We welcome all ladies that share the same passion for watches. Our members are watch collectors, watch enthusiasts, ladies working in the watch industry or who want to learn more about watches. To become a member of this amazing community, there is a form on the website to be filled. We are 3000+ passionate and knowledgeable members worldwide, from the USA, UAE, India, Switzerland, Italy, Russia and more. What makes a watch timeless? A timeless watch is more than just a functional accessory, it is a piece of art that transcends seasonal trends. A timeless watch is a perfect combination of form and function, craftsmanship and history.

What is your favourite timepiece? As a watch enthusiast, I’ve had the pleasure of owning and admiring many beautiful timepieces over the years, but if I had to choose just one, my favourite would have to be the stunning and iconic Reverso Classic Duetto from the watchmaker’s watchmaker: Jaeger-LeCoultre. The Reverso Duetto Medium stays not only in the classic look of the collection but also in the mechanical gimmick present – a watch with two faces fitted with an automatic movement. All this in a relatively small case size fitted with two rows of diamonds.

What is your day to night approach when it comes to watch dressing? As someone who is passionate about watches, I believe that choosing the right timepiece is an important part of completing any outfit. My approach to selecting a watch that can transition seamlessly from day to night involves considering several key factors. Firstly, I look for a watch with a versatile design that can complement a range of styles and occasions. I gravitate towards classic, un-

derstated designs that can be dressed up or down as needed. Secondly, I consider the size and weight of the watch. A watch that feels comfortable and doesn’t weigh down my wrist is essential for all-day wear. Finally, I think about the materials and colours of the watch. I tend to prefer watches with neutral tones and classic materials like stainless steel or leather, as these can be paired with a wide range of outfits. This is primarily a male dominated field –what has been the biggest challenge you had to overcome? As a woman in a maledominated field, I have faced a few challenges. One of the biggest challenges I have had to overcome is breaking down gender stereotypes and proving myself as a knowledgeable and capable expert in the industry. I have often found that people are surprised to learn that I am passionate about watches and have a deep understanding of the intricacies of timepieces. Despite the

challenges, I have found that my passion and dedication to watches has given me the drive to overcome any obstacles that come my way. I believe that by continuing to stay informed, and advocate for gender equality in the industry, we can create a more inclusive and diverse community of watch enthusiasts and professionals. By staying true to my passion and working hard to overcome any obstacles, I can thrive in this male-dominated field and make a meaningful contribution to the industry. Tell us about some of the big brands you have collaborated with? As a watch enthusiast and influencer, I have been fortunate enough to collaborate with several top watch brands over the years. These collaborations have given me the opportunity

to work with some of the most respected names in the industry, and to share my love of watches with a wider audience. I have collaborated with brands such as IWC, Time Valee, JLC, Vacheron Costantin, Roger Dubuis, Bulgari. All of which are known for their innovative designs and impeccable craftsmanship. Each of these collaborations has been a unique and rewarding experience, and I am grateful for the opportunity to have worked with such esteemed brands in the watch industry. What is the future for the Ladies Watch Club? As the founder of the Ladies Watch Club, I am excited about the future of the community and the role it will play in promoting women’s involvement in the world of watches. One of our primary goals is to create a supportive community where women can come together to share their love of watches and to learn from one another. We have already seen tremendous growth in our membership over the past few years, and we are committed to continuing to expand our reach and impact. Looking ahead, we plan to focus on several key areas to support the growth and development of the Ladies Watch Club. One of our top priorities is to provide more educational opportunities for our members, including workshops and history, learn more about the brands and the amount of work put behind a watch. Another area we plan to focus on is building partnerships with leading watch brands and retailers to provide our members with exclusive access to the latest models and innovations. We believe that by forging strong relationships with top industry players, we can help to promote women’s involvement in the watch industry and create more opportunities for women to succeed. Ultimately, our vision for the Ladies Watch Club is to create a vibrant and inclusive community that empowers women to pursue their passion for watches and to make meaningful contributions to the industry. We are excited about the future of the community and look forward to working with our members and partners to continue to build a strong and supportive community of women in watches.

This is The Horology Issue – how do you use your time wisely? The key to using time wisely is to prioritize my activities and focus on what’s most important. Using time wisely requires careful planning, organization, and focus. By prioritizing my activities, eliminating distractions like phone notifications, taking breaks, and remaining flexible, I can make the most of my time and achieve my goals more effectively. We must remember, time is a finite resource, so we must use it wisely and make the most of every moment.

Total Regeneration

Talk us through your career to date. I am a Spanish senior consultant physician and specialist in Internal Medicine, trained at the Clinica Puerta de Hierro (Madrid, Spain) after more than 30 years of clinical bedside practice in hospitals. Fifteen years ago, I obtained (London, UK and Melbourne, Australia) the registration (ABAARM) of A4A and became the head of the Anti-ageing Department at SHA Wellness Clinic. In recent years, I have dedicated my practice to preventing, diagnosing, and treating accelerated ageing on the clinical ground. My practical expertise includes genomics, microbiota, physical training, sleep medicine, cognitive disorders, immunotherapy, hormonal replacement, healthy nutrition, detoxifying procedures, stress management, and regenerative and revitalising medicine to give more life to years, rather than more years to life. I look at the Eastern methods for healthy ageing treatments, mainly related to nutrition and stress management, with great interest as a helpful counterpart. In October 2022, I received a European Medical Award in Medicine for the category of “Antiageing Medicine” in Paris. I am the author of several articles published in academic journals of medicine, as well as my latest book, “Joven A Cualquier Edad” (English versión -Young At Any Age- coming soon)

SHA Wellness Clinic provides the latest advances in western medicine – was this key from the outset?

SHA Wellness Clinic exists today as the result of a transformative personal health experience undergone by the destination’s founder, Alfredo Bataller Parietti. Bataller Parietti was unfortunate to receive a troubling diagnosis from a doctor, that was a threat to his quality of life. Alfredo was able to overcome the condition with integrative medicine, in

Dr. Vicente Mera, Head of Internal Medicine and Anti-Ageing, Anti-Tobacco and Sleep Medicine at SHA Wellness Clinic on the latest advances in wellness

particular with healthy and healing nutrition, natural therapies and lifestyle changes. Inspired by his experience, Bataller Parietti, along with the support of his family, set out to create a unique project that combined techniques and therapies from both medical and natural therapies to help people have longer and better-quality lives. This is the founding concept of SHA Wellness, which was founded in 2008 near Altea Bay in Spain. Since its opening, the property’s team of certified medical and wellness experts has successfully merged ancient philosophies with the latest advances in Western and Eastern medicine to generate scientifically proven results and become a worldleading authority on preventive health. Today, SHA Wellness Clinic is a global pioneer in preventive medicine and holistic wellness. The SHA 360º SHA method is the term given to the fusion of the latest advances in scientific medicine with the most effective and proven natural therapies, combined with healthy and balanced nutrition, that collectively provide an ideal state of health. The clinic has the world’s first anti-ageing bed – tell us more. To further enhance guest sleep experience, SHA has incorporated the HOGO sleep system which can be found exclusively at the Presidential and Royal suites. This is a new and improved mattress concept that instantly improves quality of sleep, promotes mental balance, reduces stress and cell regeneration, and enhances overall daily functionality. This innovative invention also helps to reverse the signs of ageing and encourages the body’s natural ability to regenerate during sleep thus improving immune function and guaranteeing an overall healthier lifestyle. Aside from being an antiageing rest system, HOGO has been credited to improve athletes’ recovery time by acting as a potent anti-inflammatory while also reducing basal cortisol and improving the immune system. Cristiano Ronaldo and his wife Georgina Rodriguez have claimed to have felt the change this has had in their sleep since the beginning of using the system and they credit it as ‘the secret’ to effectively managing their busy lifestyles. You focus on bioidentical hormone therapy and genomic counselling – how does this naturally cure ailments? Genetic counselling lets you know your health's weakest and most vital points. The best hormonal environment enables the prevention and, eventually, cure of ailments related to overeating, lack of exercise, poor stress management, detox capacity, sleep disturbances and microbiota dysbiosis. The clinic offers a host of treatments including anti-smoking programmes, nutrition therapies and more. Can you expand on these offerings? SHA Wellness offers six programs including Optimal Weight, Advanced Detox, Intensive/Optimal Weight and Advanced Detox, Healthy Ageing, Rebalance and Leader’s Performance – curated to address different health concerns, requirements and objectives. There are also four ‘focused’ divisions, addressing specific health issues including Gut Health, Sleep Recover, Stress Management and Anti-Tobacco. The anti-tobacco programme offers various treatments and therapies focused on addictions to help transition away from smoking in a healthy and controlled manner. With the goal to recover normal bodily functions without the challenging side effects of withdrawal and relapse, SHA’s team of professionals encourage healthier habits for guest lifestyles and to strengthen their commitment to permanently quitting tobacco.

The programme begins with a general health checkup followed by individualized treatments including acupuncture, magneto therapy, aquatic therapy, relaxation and more. A personalised nutrition and health plan is then curated for every individual’s physical requirement and for a unique and fully holistic experience.

The facility improves client’s long-term sleep – talk us through this programme. ‘Sleep Recovery’ is one of the more focused divisions at SHA, combining Western diagnostic techniques and natural therapies to alleviate sleep problems and put the body in total rest mode. The recommended stay is seven or fourteen days and includes a general medical consultation with a specialist at the beginning and at the end of the course. In addition, guests will receive individual treatments and therapies best suited to them, including a polygraph for the diagnosis of sleep at night, neurocognitive assessment, stress management session, energy health assessment, infrared heat and electromagnetic balance session, mindfulness session, Tibetan healing bowls therapy, brain photobiomodulation session, psychophysiological monitoring of sleep and more. The primary objective is to identify the integrative causes that generate sleep problems, via measurements using specialised technology of the natural rhythms of the human body. Once the origin of the pathology has been determined, specific treatments and therapies focused on the gradual restoration of the natural sleep cycle are then applied, in order to achieve restful sleep and recover adequate energy levels for a full and healthy life. Guests will also have full access to SHA’s world-class wellness facilities, receive a bespoke nutrition plan and enjoy delicious and healthy gastronomy from SHA’s talented culinary team. Wellness concepts have grown in the Middle East over the years – how have you seen this evolve? The wellness industry in the Middle East has demonstrated significant growth in recent years and this trend is set to continue. For many years, travellers within the region have regularly enjoyed massages and yoga retreats in traditional spa facilities, but when the pandemic hit, wellness took a new urgency and became a priority for many. This accelerated the demand for bespoke destinations that incorporated holistic and advanced wellness treatments with integrative solutions to promote long-term health for body, mind and soul. Over the years, we had many guests from the Middle East visit SHA Wellness in Spain, a strong reflection of the growing demand from this region for transformative wellness experiences. With this in mind, the UAE was the perfect location in which to expand our presence and deliver our unique approach to integrative health for new audiences.

SHA Emirates is set to open in 2025 – what can we expect at this oneof-a-kind getaway? After a decade transforming the lives of thousands of people from around the world at our current location in Spain, we dreamt of crossing the seas to new continents. We wanted more and more people to benefit from our philosophy of integrative health and well-being. For years we travelled to dozens of locations in search of the perfect nature, warm weather, and accessibility to replicate SHA. It was not easy, but we finally found everything we could imagine and more at the seaside destination of AlJurf, in the United Arab Emirates. The luxury development is surrounded by wildlife and nestled in a beautiful serene landscape. AM TO PM BEAUTY

Rebecca Walker talks us through her morning to evening beauty routine

Talk us through your morning routine. I absolutely love to move my body for at least 30 minutes first thing in the morning, so my go-to is usually a Pilates class at my favourite studio, Posture on the Palm. If I can’t get there, then I will always take my dogs for a long walk outside for some fresh air. We are so lucky to live in such a beautiful country, where nine months out of the year we can walk outside in the sunshine. Do you have a pre-bedtime routine? First and foremost, I always make sure I have washed the day off my face with a double

cleanse routine using my ZO skin health products. I use the balancing cleanser for my first cleanse then the exfoliating cleanser for my second cleanse. I then use the complexion pads and finish it off with a growth serum. Twice a week, I add a brightening retinol cream. After I have finished with my face, I love to put my hair in a bun and watch documentaries snuggled up to my doggies. I also make sure I have had enough hydration throughout the day as well. What are the skincare products you cannot live without? I am a huge advocate of

medical grade skincare. There is no substitute for quality. The products I absolutely cannot live without are the ZO skin health exfoliating polish, ZO skin health growth factor serum and the ZO skin health exfoliating cleanser.

Which mask is your favourite and why? I love Summer Fridays Jet Lag Mask, I have dry skin so it really helps with deep hydration. I also love Tata Harper’s Superkind Radiance Mask for a quick glow!

How would you describe your approach to makeup? My makeup style is minimal, I

78 emirateswoman.com BEAUTY

love to show off my skin and the skin of my beautiful clients to glow from the inside out. Of course, I love a tinted SPF and some mascara for those running out the door, racing the clock kind of days.

What product is the staple of your makeup bag? Chanel universal bronzer, the hourglass setting powder and Dior lip oil.

Which fragrances are you currently wearing? I love Dior Bois D’Argent fragrance, it smells like sunshine and always makes me happy. I am also partial to Tom Ford, Rose Prick. For evening I love Chanel,

Coco Noir. It has been a constant in my life for a long time. I wear Louis Vuitton, Imagination.

Talk us through your haircare routine. I don’t really have a routine, but I have to say that my Dyson airwrap is incredible. I am a skin girl, but my Dyson always helps me feel fresh even on the days where I haven’t washed my hair.

What is your ultimate beauty indulgence?

Micro-needling every four to six weeks, it’s especially great for those of us who live our lives in the sun.

What anti-ageing product is your favourite? A medical grade retinol, everyone should be on this from the age of 25 for anti-ageing. I love retinol for skin brightening and anti-ageing. It’s my absolute favourite and I use ZO Skin health products for this.

What is your time saving beauty hack? Great, hydrated, healthy skin, so you don’t have to wear a lot of make-up. Eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, drink plenty of water, go to bed at a reasonable hour and glow from the inside out.

How long have you been in this space? We have lived in this home for five years now. During that time, we have re-designed it many times. Have you custom-built any bespoke pieces? We custom-designed our living room sofa to be extra-large and deep enough for us all to lounge in complete comfort. The kitchen sofa was also custom-built in white linen with a concrete base.

The original grey tiles in the living area were changed to wooden flooring, to give a more grounding warm feel and the stairs were car-

peted. We also opened the kitchen by adding in large sliding doors to enhance the natural light and bring the garden in.

How do you think the interior buys reflect you? A Zen-like space that is minimal and flowing. White gives a sense of lightness of being and a place to fully recharge and totally switch off.

Divine Timing

your conscious energy and purpose, while the position of the moon determines your unconscious patterns and emotional nature. Additionally, the time of birth is used to calculate your life’s purpose and potential based on the position of the Earth in relation to the sun at the time of birth. Therefore, having an accurate time of birth is essential in creating an accurate and personalised Human Design chart that accurately reflects your unique energy and characteristics. What is at the core of Human Design? We are each uniquely wired on an energetic level. Human Design asks at its core – how am I wired to be using and exchanging my energy in the most gracious way in my life? This approach to self-recognition offers you clues and tips across various life themes including but not limited to your strengths, communication skills, optimal lifestyle and beyond.

Can you tell us more about Human Design and how the time of your birth can affect your life? Human Design is a selfdiscovery modality rooted in science and ancient wisdom. Your bio data (i.e. time, date and place of birth) are applied to create your unique chart offering clarity and awareness of self. The exact time of birth is an essential factor in creating your chart because it determines the positions of the sun, moon, and planets at the moment of birth. What do the planet positions have to do with our unique set of skills? Well, it is based in the fact that the reason why we’re affected by planets and why it can change our inner energetic wiring based on when/where we’re born is because we live in a stream of subatomic particles (also known as “neutrinos”) that are programming us since the specific time and date we’re born. The planetary positions, in turn, determine the specific energies and characteristics that an individual is said to possess. For example, the position of the sun in your chart determines

You’ve expanded your remit to include energy management – what does this encompass and how can it benefit us? In my practice, I’ve zoomed out to encompass behavioural change and scientific data into my methodology leading me to what I have coined “energy management”. The term “energy management” considers an optimisation of time, stress and attention management based on your unique needs to offer you a suite of practical applications throughout your personal and professional life. Energy Management is a system that combines ancient wisdom (i.e. iching, Chakra System, Human Design, amongst others), science (quantum physics, genomics) and behavioural change practices. It provides a highly customised roadmap of your energetic operating system. It offers practical insights into areas such as how you are designed to make decisions, interact with others, and operate in terms of work.

Energy management is not only useful for individuals but also for families and teams leading to organisational development by leveraging on customised peak performance.

We speak to Negin Baradari, on how the time of your birth affects your Energy Typology and how Energy Management can support a journey to self-awareness and clarity of our inner wiring

WORDS: AMY SESSIONS

Time is a luxury today – how do you protect your time and energy daily to optimise output? Time, akin to Energy, is an undervalued currency in my opinion. Time is composed of two distinct aspects: just like as a set of twins, the ancient Greeks did a great job with their mythology to explain this. Sometimes it can be helpful to look back in order to move forwards. In the Greek language, there are two words to describe time: Chronos and Kairos. Chronos is chronological, linear time. Chronos time is where the ego thrives. It is what we want when we want it, the expectation that as one event comes to an end, the next should arrive right that moment. It’s the part of us that tells us we should have a job, a house, a spouse, or children by a certain age. Our ego aggressively sets a timetable, but so much of its pursuit is rooted in fear, control, and social conditioning. Checking off the ego’s items before our soul is ready for them often leaves us with a sense of emptiness and disappointment.

Kairos, on the other hand, is nonlinear, sacred time. This is the Universe’s divine plan – that everything is unfolding in perfect timing for our soul’s highest evolvement. It is restarting your career when you discover a new passion at 50 or falling in love and being giddy at 78. The timing is not convenient or logical by the ego’s standard, but it fulfills our soul’s deepest longing and purpose. To be aligned with Kairos is to know that there is an intelligence vaster than our limited vision orchestrating in our favour, and to trust that things will turn out to be perfect as the Universe intended. It is mystical, timeless and leaves you with a sense of awe and gratitude. And isn’t that something we could benefit from now more than ever?

I have been testing the fundamentals of energy management on myself for many years now and can say with confidence that I am more and more in tune with my own energy typology, which has been quite liberating. My energy typology is my customised user manual that I use on a daily basis to optimise my habits, enhance my energy levels and align with a lifestyle that fuels me and feels empowering to me depending of what season or stage of life I am finding myself in. Being aware of my energy typology has become my guilt-free cheat sheet to optimising my spending time with people that I truly care about, engaging in activities that energise me and tending to my purpose one daily tiny habit at a time. When have you had to trust the timing of your life most and what allowed you to do so? All-in-all, it’s a daily practice especially for the ones amongst us trying to live intentional lives in a time-snatching society filled with overstimulation coming at us from all directions. One of the most critical skills in life – and yet never taught in school – is choosing where to direct your energy and therefore also your time. We are

not taught how to invest our energy or how to invest our energy in alignment to our own inner circuitry. Which daily habits and practices do you make time for to ensure you show up as your highest self? The easier the habits the more likely you’ll stick to them so I keep things simple in life in general. My morning coffee before I check my phone I enjoy with no distraction, it’s my moment of self-reflection and usually the reflection consists of:

∙ morning coffee + reflection

∙ my reflection while siping my coffee goes like this to structure my day

∙ three key things I want to get done that day

∙ two tiny habits that I want to practise that make me feel alive (this can be double-downing on hydration and going for a 10 min walk after dinner at the ocean front); and last but not least

∙ one frequency/emotion/vibration (usually one word e.g. empowered, kind, sparkly, magnetic, satisfied, etc. I want to feel throughout the day and I make sure to check in throughout the day with myself to calibrate or recalibrate to that vibration.

Have you had any mentors and if so, what advice did they impart? Yes, I have had lots of mentors at different stages of my life – most of them are not even aware of how much they have mentored me in a subconscious way. One of my mentors is hands-down a woman who truly has proven that managing your energy can get you beyond what you could ever dream of. I’ve had the privilege to have access to Shari Jafari, CEO of not only one but three companies – Beyond Beauty Club, Simon Ourian M.D. and MDO Cosmetic Dermatology. Shari taught me to curate my time wisely with 1) what I do (performance), 2) what space(s) feels conducive to me to perform (environment), and 3) whose presence and energy I surround myself with (people). Beyond the many pearls of advice Shari has imparted to me, I truly believe that her deepest impact on me has been her way of life and observing her truly create the life of her dreams across all avenues of her life. She works hard, acknowledges and celebrates her peers and last but not least will create opportunities for others, especially women to go beyond what they think is possible. For me that’s sheer elegance – impacting lives IRL without the need of influencing opinions in the digital world…

What advice would you give your younger self? Never skip an opportunity to celebrate life with your loved ones – be it your biological and/ or chosen family. Life expands and unfolds in a beautiful way when spent in good company. You have the power to make time contract or expand based on your desires.

TRUST THE TIMING

Incredible women tell us what it takes to trust the

Jacklyn McCulloch

FOUNDER OF THE CANDLE BRAND INNER ALCHEMIST

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? Well, it’s such a cliché to say that if something doesn’t work out for you then it’s because something better is in store, and I think once that happens to you over and over again, you finally start to see how true it is. I can’t really think of a specific or more relevant time, but when I look back on ALL of the “really bad” things that happened to me (things that haven’t went how I REALLY desperately wanted), I’m SO unbelievably grateful that they didn’t, because my life would have been so different and always without exception something better comes along that I couldn’t have even imaged at the time I wanted something else. I felt pressure to do something at university when my heart wasn’t in it, but I was scared that if I didn’t then my life would be a failure, because that’s what society pushed on me. When I didn’t get the grades I needed, I was devastated at the time, but that was actually the catalyst for me taking the chance on a job with Emirates and moving to Dubai, travelling the world, meeting the most inspiring people. There has been a break up with a boyfriend for example in the past that I thought it was the absolute end of the world, and now I look back thinking THANK YOU, because I wouldn’t have went down the path I chose if I had stayed with this person and I know my life would not be as good as it is now. There have also been

so many times when I’ve decided to go out somewhere purely because I was feeling sad over a break up or something else that didn’t go my way because I didn’t want to stay in the house sad and alone (whereas normally I’d have stayed at home and declined all invites to go out that day being the hermit that I sometimes am), and I’ve ended up meeting some amazing person or people who have changed my life for the positive in some way, whether it’s been by inspiring me or making think differently about something, taught me a lesson that I’ll never forget, or been a good business connection or become a best friend who my life would not be the same without now. Something good always comes out of any bad, so I now tend to go more with the flow and trust that everything is happening as it should and in alignment with the greater good.

This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? This is so so simple, but has made such a big difference for me in managing my time recently. I list three of the most important and nonnegotiable things I have to do that day and make sure I get those done no matter what. Instead of scrambling about different tasks that all get half completed and I forget the most important ones, three tasks is manageable. It’s so basic but it’s made such a difference for me. It’s still something I’m trying to master, particularly with having ADHD I can get distracted and lose focus really easy from different tasks. My to do lists had become something that’s just impossible to complete and stressed me out instead of helping me be productive.

timing in their lives and use it wisely

Fatma Almheiri

FOUNDER OF FASHION LABEL, VENUS THE LABEL

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? Trusting the timing of my life is crucial for my personal growth and development. I have learned that in many situations, I must be patient and wait for things to fall into place. Whether it’s waiting for the right job opportunity, the perfect partner, or the ideal moment to pursue my passions, trust in the process is key. I firmly believe that everything will eventually work out, even if the path is not always apparent or straightforward. This belief requires me to let go of my need to control every aspect of my life and be open to the challenges and opportunities that come my way. This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? Through setting goals and priorities, it’s so important for me to know what I want to achieve. Making a list of my goals and assigning a level of importance to each one. This helps me focus my time and energy on the most important tasks. Planning and scheduling, once the goals are set, I create a plan to accomplish them. This is something I still struggle with, however taking one step at a time helps me stay focused in what I need to achieve. Avoiding distraction, the biggest time eater! I usually limit my usage of social media and turn off notifications to create a quiet workspace for myself with minimal distractions. Taking breaks to help increase my productivity, it helps me recharge and refocus. My favourite one of them all, rewarding myself once I have hit a certain goal or achievement. It helps boost my self confidence when I acknowledge the effort and progress I made, it increases my motivation and encourages me to go even further, of course not replacing the actual goal and in moderation.

Julie Lemke

HOLISTIC ESTHETICIAN

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? When things did not turn out as I had planned in my mind. At one point I was facing so many obstacles and rejections that it forced me to pause and rethink my actions, my purpose and why I was fighting so desperately for something I maybe didn’t even want? I finally made the link between the roadblocks and me not living my authentic truth and I surrendered. It was in that exact moment that everything started falling into place and my life took a completely different direction to what I could ever have imagined. It was the most perfect timing; I would just never have planned it myself, as it was a ripping apart of everything before it could fall into place. New opportunities arose, everything gathered synergistically and one thing led to the other – paving the way to where I am today. Looking back, I am so unbelievably grateful for all the doors that closed, as new ones opened, allowing me to fully embrace my passion. I firmly believe that obstacles are a detour in the right direction – if you are willing to listen and be open to the guidance of a “higher power”. Sometimes we overlook things and opportunities in the need of controlling everything. But if we are willing loosen to our presettings, we can eventually create space for magic and new beginnings.

This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? I allow myself sensory, social, mental, emotional and creative rest in order to be more efficient in what I do – when I do it. We live in world where we are constantly ON. However, I personally found that I do not function very well in that way, so I had to implement some strategies to support me to be able to function at my best. I also realised that taking a lot of mini breaks, makes me far more productive than taking one longer break. Just a quick speedy recharge and I am ready again. I am huge on meal planning, making sure everything is set for the week. And finally, the real Game Changer, my work-related Capsule Wardrobe. Having a small selection of clothes as part of my business attire has literally changed my life and given me so much more time.

Sarah Alagroobi ARTIST

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? There are many pivotal moments in life where time operates as a synchronistic phenomenon that creates meaning. Everything happens for a reason, so I do not approach life with an expectation that I can control my path or what is intended for me. I would rather honour the causes and effects that have been presented to me and know that although I may not understand their significance at that moment, it may come to me several years down the line. I truly believe that synchronicity draws the eye’s attention to moments in our lives when we need to stop and take a minute to breathe. Carl Jung defines time as the manifestation of the collective unconscious, archetypes, symbols, and experiences we derive from. So, I trust that the past was intended to guide the present to make way for the future. This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? I see that time is a non-renewable resource; you can never get it back, so I don’t necessarily see it as ‘timekeeping’ but rather ‘time-taking’. I am very conscious about how I spend my time and who I give it to. I also feel that time is something you cannot control, so it is up to you to go with time rather than against it. We always feel we are racing against the clock, by recognising moments of stillness and being present with your time, you will manage it very well because you will be hyper-aware of its value. It is a currency that we can never trade, so you have to protect it.

Maryam Fayadh

FOUNDER OF BAHRAINI JEWELLERY BRAND JGALA

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? Shortly after receiving my architecture degree in 2016, I knew I wanted to do something different, but I was held back by the pressure to pursue a profession in the field I had just spent five years studying and along with not knowing what I truly wanted to do. After five years of working in multiple disciplines ranging from engineering offices to creative design agencies, and feeling out of place, I decided to focus on architecture again. On March 30, 2021, I was offered a job at the engineering firm I was interning at and refused it instantly. I had no plan or reason other than my gut telling me that this profession does not allow me to soar. By April 1st, 2021, I had decided to start my journey as a jewellery designer and met with a master jeweller to help me plan my educational journey and new career. When the time was right, without hesitation, I made a life changing decision which then led me to where I am today: a jewellery designer whose methodology and designs are shaped by architecture and its rich history. This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? Over the years, I have come to believe that I am most productive when I have a detailed weekly and monthly schedule. This allows me to be productive while also having some flexibility to shift tasks around to accommodate for my time with my loved ones.

Bea Bongiasca

ITALIAN JEWELLERY DESIGNER

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? I feel the question should be, when have I not trusted it? I have always been a believer in the saying “everything happens for a reason”, but I always add at the right time! Creating my brand has taught me to be patient even when I wanted things to happen instantly for myself. For instance, if everything I had going on right now, all the success the brand has witnessed, if all this occurred at the same time, I believe we wouldn’t have been able to manage as well as we have. For me, slow and steady always wins, and for a reason! This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? I am a very organized person, so managing time is no issue. I actually enjoy planning ahead which really helps me with managing my time effectively, particularly when it comes to everything involving the Bea Bongiasca brand.

Arwa Al Banawi

SAUDI FASHION DESIGNER

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? Starting my own brand, it took time and many dreamy conversations but it was meant to happen when certain things were accomplished in my life and career. I felt in a blink of a moment in 2015 that now is the time. This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? I prioritise my tasks by importance of deadline. I try not to force inspiration as I learned with experience it has to come naturally and the more you do not think about it, you will get inspired more often. I plan “personal time“ and take that time seriously whether it’s a solo trip by the sea or by the mountains or a spa day – “me time makes all the difference in time management“. Most importantly, I delegate things that I don’t need to add pressure on myself to do personally and it took me time to learn that but I did through experience of almost 10 years in my field.

Leen Mattar

FASHION DESIGNER

When have you had to trust the timing of your life in the past? When I hit rock bottom in my personal life and education, I realised that despite the obstacles and doubts from others, I needed to pursue my long envisioned career in fashion. From a young age I gravitated towards it, and the process of creating. Going against what I felt I was meant to do led to me being unable to excel in any areas of my life. After five semesters jumping from major to major, I trusted my intuition and booked a flight back to Jordan where I asked my Father to take a chance and invest my tuition fees into creating my brand, Lilo. Another moment I remember is sketching a dress and seeing the same design in a department store from a big Italian brand. It was another sign to start, it was the time to bring my vision to life, my designs are meant to be now. Time is one of the most precious things in life, and it’s easy to delay turning your dreams into reality for the fear of failing. These experiences taught me to trust the timing of my life, to believe in myself, the process, and most importantly God.

This is The Horology Issue – how do you manage your time wisely? As a young entrepreneur and fashion designer, time management is one of the key components to staying on the path to success. I believe it is the most precious commodity, and aim to balance it between work and my personal life. I invest a large amount of my time in the creative process, designing, and perfecting each capsule we launch. If I’m not creating, I love learning from other creatives in the industry to broaden my horizons. I also dedicate time to be with myself, I enjoy my own company and feel as though my personal identity creates the character that Lilo is as a brand, its life through my eyes.

FOUNDER OF LALA DIAMONDS

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? This is a very therapeutic question. There’s so much I would like to tell the young Tania. First thing would be: you’re loved – they’re doing the best they can with what they have and know. Be more selfish and less available – definitely learn to say “No.” Finish law school instead of swapping to journalism – don’t be lazy! Do a master’s in communications after. Don’t waste so much time seeking validation or perhaps, love more, live more, be more careless and regret nothing. After all, your path led you here, Tania, you’re being featured in Emirates Woman, you’re doing great. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? This is a tricky one. Lately, I’ve been super focused on my time, family and people. I don’t waste any more time with what doesn’t suit me, nor do I adapt my time to others. The last three months have been life-changing; honestly, right now, as I answer this, I’m all about healing and journaling and using my time wisely and prioritizing. If I’m not in the mood, I won’t stay longer or go. My time is priceless. I prioritise what I have to do each week in terms of meetings – in-person or online, personal appointments and errands, laptop work, or workshop work. Of course, I always find time to see my friends, go to the gym, do leisure and work travels and so on. I also include my goals for the week, which is always there because if I don’t reach them, they pass to the following week’s schedule. I always anticipate some roadblocks on the way. The trick here is to spend your time wisely with intent. We all have different definitions of time, so the best way to have a more common meaning is to spend quality time doing what you love and with the people you love. Don’t forget your tasks – goals and responsibilities.

We ask some of the most incredible women we know, how they optimise time and what wisdom time has brought to their lives
WORDS: JOELLE ALBEAINO

Sara Rahbari

FOUNDER OF CHIC LE FRIQUE

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? Well, going back in time is certainly not an option. That might not necessarily be a bad thing because if we could, we might never be able to experience all the ups and downs and ride all those learning curves that life throws at us. So, my advice to my younger self would be not to worry and stress as much as I did. Keep living life and taking in all the experiences on this journey to evolve into a better human being. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I actually think time cannot be looked at as currency. Time is definitely way more precious. It is the one thing that you cannot make more of. Therefore, it is extremely important for me to organize my time during the day to find the right balance between my family, myself and my work. Although I have to admit it. That is easier said than done.

Lindsay Doran

FOUNDER OF ACTIVEWEAR BRAND L’COUTURE

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I like to live my life with no regrets, but I would tell my younger self to trust the journey, to always believe in myself and know that things always work out the way they are supposed to.

Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? Being an entrepreneur and busy mum of three, life is always hectic. Training is a huge part of my life and a non-negotiable in my daily schedule, so my days are usually planned out meticulously to ensure I fit this in around time with my kids and time at the office. I have to really plan everything out so I can ensure I have time to fit everything in. There are never enough hours in the day but sticking to a plan really is the only way it all happens.

FOUNDER OF FASHION LABEL

LAMA JOUNI

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I believe we tend to overthink and worry about the future too much but in the end, everything will happen to our own benefit.

Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I try to use time with balance. Meaning I like my days to be versatile and not only focused on work.

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I would tell my younger self to be less critical of herself and not be as tough on herself. I feel like sometimes I was hard on myself when I was doing the best I could in many aspects, but I always felt like I needed to do more. One more thing, I wish I did not give myself deadlines for things before reaching a certain age, there is no timeline to doing things and there is no age limit to when to accomplish things.

Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I am guilty of planning my week ahead and logging everything into my calendar, so I hold myself accountable and because I’m very forgetful. I find this really helps me organize my time. I’m also very good at taking time off for myself when needed, especially lately which gets me very motivated and fuels me with energy.

Caroline Receveur ENTREPRENEUR

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I would tell her to dare and go for what she believes in, without worrying about what other people think as long as it makes sense to her. I would tell her to always be grateful, even for the mistakes and bad encounters, because that’s the only way to learn. And most importantly, I would tell her to always trust her intuition and follow her heart. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I try to organize my time around the things and people who make me feel good, so I can nourish myself with good energies and give it back.

Amanda Rushforth

SUSTAINABLE CONTENT CREATOR

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I would honestly say to myself that there’s a much bigger picture to look at and that we have a lifetime to achieve our goals, enjoy being in the moment. I would also tell myself to put down my phone, worry less, travel more and ask more questions. I loved school and sports and often wish I could go back to reliving that team spirit. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I have a very clear list of priorities and my family is at the top, so I make sure that my time is always time well spent. I also make sure I carve out time for myself as our health is our greatest asset.

Sonia Leretz

CO-FOUNDER AND MANAGING PARTNER, REVALUE CONSULTING

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I look back and think that when we are young, there is no escape but to live with what life throws at us because we have very little control at the time. Life back then resembles a flipper game, where we are the flipper ball. It’s part of the process to play the game, and my advice would be to take distance from reality, and grasp time to better anticipate, play the game, with the cards aligned with my aspirations.

Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I perceive time as a resource, as a process to be nurtured. I will not perceive time as a constraint, or something that will make me accelerate. In the contrary, I will give time to time: to better invest myself in what I do and with whom I share my time with, with the objective to always absorb the present.

Sumayyah Al Suwaidi

TALENTED ARTIST

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? Believe in yourself and your capabilities, be true to yourself and throw the word fear out of the window. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? I divide my time between my loved ones and work. I do my best to balance to the point that I don’t feel like I am working anymore. It is just so integrated into my life that even when I am working it feels like a normal casual day.

Nadine Kanso

FOUNDER OF JEWELLERY BRAND BIL ARABI

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? My advice to my younger self would be to be bolder and less shy. One should not try to change things. As I am a true believer in what is meant to be, will be. When we are young, we frequently have a fearless attitude and a willingness to take risks, which can help us achieve our goals and objectives. That is particularly why my advice to my younger self would be to be more courageous. However, as we age, we can become more hesitant and risk-averse, which can cause us to miss out on chances. I believe it is critical to nurture a fearless and open mindset. That includes being willing to take calculated risks, try new things, and pursue our passions even if they appear intimidating at first. Of course, being bold does not imply being irresponsible or ignoring the dangers and drawbacks of a decision. However, it does include being willing to move outside of our comfort zones and take actions toward our goals, even if we are unsure of the outcome. Taking a chance and being brave when it counts, in my experience, leads to some of the most gratifying opportunities and experiences in life. So, my advice to everyone, young or old, is to keep an open mind, to be interested and to never be scared to take a bet on yourself and your ambitions. Time is your greatest currency – how do you use your time wisely? Time is life. Our whole lives are measured against time, which makes it that much more precious. Time is, in my opinion, one of the most valuable commodities we have in life. We can’t earn more time or get it back after it’s gone, unlike money. That is why it is critical to be careful of how we use our time and to ensure that we are utilizing it in ways that are consistent with our beliefs and aspirations. Time, in my opinion, is not a currency, rather it is a currency of sorts, and it’s up to each of us to decide how we want to spend it. That means being intentional about setting priorities, making time for the people and activities that matter most to us, and avoiding distractions or timewasters that don’t add value to our lives. Ultimately, I believe that time is a precious gift, that we should enjoy and make the most of. That might mean being more mindful of how we use our time, setting clearer priorities, or making changes to our daily routines and habits to better align with our goals and values. But whatever we do, it’s important to remember that time is a finite resource, and we should use it wisely.

Nayla Albaloushi

If you could go back in time, what advice would you give to your younger self? I don’t have any advice for my younger self. I have lived every stage in my life and enjoyed every single part of it. I wouldn’t change or do anything differently.

Time is your greatest currency – How do you use your time wisely? I start my morning early to do Fajer prayer then choose an activity depending on the weather, and after that I go to work. During the evening time, I enjoy unwinding at home and that’s how my day ends.

Tribute to Craft HÔTEL

DES HORLOGERS

WORDS:CAMILLE MACAWILI

Inspired by the Vallé de Joux, one of the cradles of Swiss watchmaking, Hôtel des Horlogers opened its doors in the village of Le Brassus, where its predecessor, the Hôtel de France, settled in 1857. It is thoughtfully designed by global architecture firm Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG)

and realised by the Swiss architecture office CCHE, two partners who also signed the Musée Atelier Audemars Piguet situated a few steps away.

Departing from the usual codes of hotel architecture, Hôtel des Horlogers’ zigzagging architecture descends towards the sur-

rounding meadows and seamlessly integrates into the Vallée de Joux’s pastoral landscape. Inside, the simple lines and refined language of the contemporary lobby contrast with the more sinuous and rustic architectural elements that visitors can admire.

The superior boutique hotel takes on a holistic and sustainable approach and is echoed from the building development to its day-to-day operations to reduce its environmental impact.

THE STAY

Having been inspired by the beauty of the Risoud Forest, which borders the valley, Danish architect Bjarke Ingels conceived the hotel so that all the rooms would offer a breathtaking view of the region. Made of local materials such as stone and wood, the interior design imagined by AUM invites guests to take their time and connect with the surrounding environment. Timely Pursuits

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? We are in the midst of an incredibly exciting time for ROAM. Having launched the brand earlier this month and our mobile camp opening in Tiaf this summer, it’s all hands-on deck. I spend my time between our offices in Jeddah and Riyadh, so early mornings are often spent catching domestic flights and enjoying my fair share of delicious Saudi coffee.

What was the catalyst to launch ROAM?

When the Kingdom opened itself to tourism in 2019, it created a host of new opportunities for both domestic and international travellers. A genuine new frontier, and the largest country in the Arabian Peninsula, Saudi stretches along the length of the Red Sea and the Arabian Gulf. Home to stunning natural landscapes, historical sites and modern architecture, it truly has something for every-

one. With so much to offer, it is an exciting time for everyone involved in the travel industry. With our heritage and local experience, ROAM hopes to support the evolving landscape by becoming the most trusted luxury travel company in the Kingdom. How did the partnership come about between Cool Inc and Pelorus? ROAM is the result of a joint venture between Saudi luxury and lifestyle hospitality company, Cool Inc, and bespoke travel and yachting company, Pelorus. The partnership came about in order to rewrite the narrative for luxury travel in the Kingdom. Together they have been able to develop a unique strategy that incorporates the essence of Saudi culture and leverages each company’s strengths to create innovative and enduring DMC experiences. By combining Pelorus’ expertise in experiential travel with Cool Inc’s local knowledge and market understanding, ROAM can now offer tailored DMC services specifically designed for the Kingdom, setting them apart from their competitors and enabling them to provide unparalleled levels of customer service. This approach distinguishes ROAM as a luxury travel and tourism brand that delivers exceptional, one-of-a-kind products and services, contributing to the development of the Kingdom’s tourism infrastructure and making it easier for travellers to discover its beauty. You offer a bespoke travel service within unexplored regions in Saudi Arabia – can you expand on this? ROAM’s multi-vertical, product-driven, and service-led business is made up of four key verticals, including bespoke travel, tour services, accommodation bookings and transportation. The company will also offer aviation, concierge services, brand experiences & events, luxury events & activations and VIP guest management. ROAM’s unique products include mobile camps, day camps, e-quads and private dining experiences. These products highlight the very best of Saudi Arabia and are available for purchase as part of the company’s bespoke travel service or as standalone experiences.

ROAM will be activating in different regions throughout the year, following the seasons. Destinations include Tabuk, NEOM, Al Ula, Jeddah, Riyadh, Al Ahsa Oasis, and Red Sea from October to March, and Taif, Al Baha, Tanomah, Abha, Jazan region, and Farasan Island from May to September.

What does it take to launch and offer a hyperseasonal luxury travel concept in Saudi Arabia? At the heart of ROAM, are its people. Our team is made up of a majority of Saudi talent, and we expect this to continue to increase as we attract more bright, young Saudis into this budding market. With the experience of living it, we are able to find, craft, and deliver experiences in Saudi year-round. Our mobile camp allows us to capitalise on the cooler

ROAM aims to be bold in all its endeavours, constantly evolving and developing new experiences for our clients. In June, the camp will launch in the beautiful, mountainous region of Taif. The first of its kind, the camp will then move across the Kingdom every 8-12 weeks, allowing travellers to experience undiscovered regions of KSA, without having to compromise on comfort or indulgence. Each spectacular remote location offers the perfect weekend getaway for friends, family or colleagues. The camp

is designed and decorated to showcase modern Saudi with traditional touches, as well as small attachments that will change to reflect the local region. Sabri Thani, Director of Marketing and Communications at Lapita Dubai Parks and Resorts, Autograph Collection Hotels on bringing Polynesian hospitality to the forefront

WORDS: SARAH JOSEPH

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like – your morning routine? I set aside something to help me prepare for the day ahead, so that I can show up with the best version of myself. I go through the day’s tasks and note down important things that need to get done while sipping on some coffee or tea and sitting down to enjoy a good breakfast. Talk us through your career. If you look closely at my career, you will start to notice a pattern – I thrive on the frontlines and am drawn to working with good people

and organisations that let me do meaningful work. Before joining Lapita Dubai Parks and Resorts as Director of Marketing and Communications, I was the Head of Corporate Communications and Marketing and was then promoted to Director of Corporate Communications at Majid Al Futtaim. What is your role as Director of Marketing and Communications? In my mind, marketing and communications are both an art as well as a science. I start with strategy and then explore the stories that will help consumers resonate with our message and goals. As a director, I lead the marketing and communications team at Lapita Dubai. This means that I oversee the strategic development and

execution of all creative media. I lead the team in executing public relations plans and email campaigns that enhance the Marriott brand, offset competitor activities, and maximise regional marketing opportunities – including for Marriot Bonvoy, Marriott Rewards, and other strategic partners. Lapita is Dubai’s first theme park hotel – tell us more. Lapita is a unique, family-friendly Polynesian resort – we are the only hotel within Dubai Parks and Resorts where guests receive direct access to all theme parks, including Legoland, MotionGate, and Riverland. Dedicated to celebrating the spirit of the Polynesian islands, guests can take in the detailed, Polynesian-inspired architecture

116 emirateswoman.com LIFESTYLE

and landscaping across the resort – a beautiful complement to an already-picturesque and serene experience. We enhance the experience with elevated comfort and décor in all accommodations, with soft lighting, Polynesian designs, private balconies or terraces, and marble bathrooms. The private villas provide extra space, with a pool and garden that boast stunning views. Guests can choose between four excellent dining establishments or unwind at the on-site spa. Lapita also offers numerous activities to thrill the hearts of anyone enjoying a stay at the resort, making it the perfect family destination. What are the innovative facilities on board that set this hotel apart? We are the first and only

Polynesian resort in Dubai with a daily sunset ritual – known as the Ahi Ahi ceremony – and classically trained Polynesian artists. We are not just Polynesian themed – we incorporate all aspects of Polynesian culture into our resort and take every chance to educate our guests on its heritage and traditions. From greeting guests with garlands and drinks, to ensuring that our staff can identify and cater to individual needs, we always aim to create the best possible experience for all visitors. Every detail at Lapita Dubai is designed to transport guests to the exotic islands of Polynesia. A kids and teens club –paired with a lazy river and themed activities at the Lapita centre – help create opportunities to make fun memories with the family. Another thing that sets us apart is that with any booking, guests receive entry tickets to one of the theme parks under Dubai Parks and Resorts – this is standard regardless of the duration of stay or accommodation type. The resort also offers a dedicated conference centre with a 710sqm ballroom, six meeting rooms and event facilities, and an additional 26,296 square feet of flexible space for all occasions, making it the best escape for corporate team building sessions due to its nature and serene environment.

What are the key culinary offerings that the resort has to offer? Lapita Dubai has four dining establishments that provide a diverse range of culinary options for guests to choose from. ARI, a poolside restaurant and bar, allows guests to soak up the sun while enjoying drinks and dishes from an exclusive menu – including the likes of a Tahiti Sling, a delicious concoction of pineapple, lemon, lychee, and passionfruit – and the Polynesian seafood soup with a medley of seafood in a coconut broth. PALAMA is the resort’s lobby lounge and has a continental menu featuring a broad range of mocktails and dishes. Guests can unwind at this social hub with family and friends. Our KALEA restaurant offers an all-day dining buffet experience, where guests can choose to dine under traditional waka canoes or enjoy the views of the resort from the terrace. KALEA also hosts Polynesian themed nights every Friday and Saturday – a fun experience for all guests and diners. Hikina is a SouthEast Asian restaurant that boasts a menu packed with explosive flavours. Diners can savour authentic dishes such as Tom Kha Gai or treat their sweet tooths with desserts like Pandan Cheesecake. How has the group undertaken a sustainable approach as the UAE is gearing towards the same? At Lapita, we believe that sustainability is important for everyone and every business. While it is great to see that more people are becoming aware of environmental issues, I want to note that it is extremely

important to first understand the ways in which we can help the environment, rather than applying practices that may not have the best result. At Lapita, we collaborated with Simply Bottles to implement a recycling programme for plastic bottles. The recycled bottles are turned into clothes, caps, and bags to contribute to a zero-waste environment. We also have around 90 to 95 solar panels that produce renewable energy for water heating in guests’ rooms. Are there any recent collaborations that have stood out? We recently collaborated with the Fijian embassy, which saw the arrival of classically trained Polynesian artists at Lapita Dubai, to re-launch our Ahi Ahi Cer-

emony and introduce people to more of the Polynesian culture. The Polynesian evening event held on March 9, 2023 was a huge success, with numerous media and influencers attending to enjoy the traditional performances and witness the Ahi Ahi Ceremony – a sunset ritual that welcomes the setting sun – with a specially curated spread provided by KALEA Restaurant. The event demonstrated our commitment to spreading awareness around Polynesian culture, helping to highlight the daily performances at the resort and the appreciation for tradition embodied by everyone at Lapita Dubai. What are the future plans for the resort and the hotel? While there are no concrete plans at the moment, we are always looking to innovate and elevate our resort in order to provide our guests with a seamless experience. We also look forward to introducing a Tiki Hut in the near future, which will be a fun space for children to play and learn in with the support of the resort’s Polynesian artists. What small things elevate your life? It would definitely be seeing the smiles on my guests’ faces, or the moment where I see one of my ideas come to life and realise the difference it makes to our guests and the resort. While at work, I also take small moments to enjoy the natural environment outside – the resort is absolutely gorgeous, so I try to make the most of it.
