Editor’s Letter

Welcome to The Reset Issue.

I would like to thank an incredible team for digging deep in 2022 and supporting us to achieve all that we have – championing incredible women and with continued growth across both Emirates Woman and Emirates Man. Thank you for always choosing the uncrowded extra mile to demonstrate your strengths and for retaining a focus on quality over quantity in all aspects, it is truly appreciated and what we do daily would not be possible without each of you.

CHANNEL YOUR MAGIC AND MAKE IT HAPPEN.

For January’s cover we partnered with Buccellati, a family-run fine jewellery house founded in 1919, still using centuries-old Italian techniques to create its incredible pieces. Inspired by Renaissance and Venetian designs, each piece is uniquely engraved as a mark of the artisans’ meticulous

hand-craftsmanship you’ll see in The Fine Craft on page 12. In this issue you will find everything to enable you to kick off the New Year with confidence from body, mindset and goal setting. With a laser focus on all things wellness and fitness related as you might expect for January, we look at game-changing activewear in The Edit on page 24, interview Dr Simoné Laubscher, co-founder of global super brand WelleCo in The Wellness Guru on page 60 and we speak to Dr Augustinus Bader on how to ensure you’re taking optimal care of your skin in The Skin Guru on page 54.

Finally, some of the most incredible women we know tell us what affirmations they have for 2023 in The Year Ahead on page 78. Channel your magic and make it happen in 2023 – Happy New Year!

THE BUCCELLATI DEMONSTRATES UNSURPASSED SKILL TO CREATE STANDOUT PIECES THAT LAST A LIFETIME

Inspired by Renaissance and Venetian designs, each piece form Buccellati is uniquely engraved as a mark of the artisans’ meticulous handcraftsmanship. The Macri Classica line reproduces the very first designs from Buccellati, which was pure minimalist: no curves, no convexities and no rosettes. An ode to clean, cool minimalism this collection is the embodiment of less is more. The Macri collection, designed by Gianmaria Buccellati developed a richer design, embellished with bombé elements, leaf-modelled rosettes and shiny beads, thus obtaining jewels that contained all the signature goldsmithing techniques used by the artisans of the Maison. Truly timeless pieces to invest in.

The Finer Details

but also at a reasonable price. We have low margins because we want to be as attainable as possible. I am not here for short term financial gain; I have worked for over 20 years to get here, and my dream is to make women and men feel confident so that our reputation will bring us success long term. Tell us how the brand has evolved since the initial ideation stages and what have been the biggest challenges to date? There were many stages, I compiled all the ideas I had and started with a drop I love and that I felt people would need. I am passionate about the fabrics we use, where the fabrics come from and who is manufacturing them. We handpicked the mills who produce the wool or yarns and then we hand-picked the factories who manufacture our garments. We have met all factory owners in person. Therefore, the brand took three years to launch.

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like/your morning routine? We have a twoyear-old son, Honoré. I like to get up an hour before he wakes. This is some time to myself to think. I am my most creative when I am relaxed and alone. What is the core DNA of the brand and did you always know you wanted to have your own fashion brand? I have dreamed of having a fashion brand since I can remember. But it was never “if” it was always “when I have”. There was never another option. If you fail, which we all do at some points, just pick yourself up and try again. I was very patient. I have a fashion design and marketing degree and a distinction from the London College of Fashion. I have attended premiere vision in Paris every year since I was 17.

I was then a Fashion Specialist at Harrods where I was on the ground dressing both men and women from different parts of the world, different cultures. It built my foundation to learn every aspect of how garments fit, what people want, body shapes, respecting religions and cultures. I took everything in and used to write design ideas on the back of Harrods receipts. I then went on to being a luxury fashion influencer and worked with some of the most prestigious brands making hundreds of online friendships helping women build their capsule wardrobe. Everything I have done the last 25 years has led to this point, it really has been a lifelong dream and I waited to have all this

knowledge and experience. The DNA of the brand is simple. Good quality pieces that feel amazing, make you feel confident and last a lifetime. The pieces are all designed to be classic, wearable pieces. They can be styled with your current wardrobe and be worn from day to night, work to weekend; the idea is to get low “cost per wear”. The pieces are so wearable. If you buy each piece from the drop, you can mix and match to create multiple, endless looks. From the basic knitted organic sets as elevated lounge wear to the “CC” split leggings with heels and our London Duster coat. The idea is to buy the full drop, and this is your capsule wardrobe for the season; otherwise buy one piece and this will fit seamlessly into your existing wardrobe. Buying the right garments, means buying less and feeling less stressed when getting dressed. We are offering impeccably designed pieces; practical, comfortable, wearable, high quality, classic

If I am honest, I had moments where I did not believe in myself, and I would put the brand off. Overcoming the thought that “I can’t do this” was a challenge. I had samples back in 2018 but it took two years to overcome this. I am confident in my knowledge of this sector of the industry but due to this being a lifelong dream I put too much pressure on myself. I have my husband Paris and my mum to thank but also my online community for encouraging me and reminding me how I had helped them buy better, build their own capsule collection and they would tell me that they believed in me. I am very grateful for this. Please believe in yourself, do not waste years like I did. We can all only do our best and if we put 100 per cent into what we love, we can be proud of ourselves. I really wanted to be size inclusive. This was challenging as it meant triple the sampling. We did not just make a sample to fit me and scale the sizes. I wanted to sample petite sizing and extralarge sizing. This delayed the process and cost triple what it should have. I was willing to put in the investment (both time and money) to ensure we were as inclusive as possible. I have plans to focus on size inclusivity when we scale the company. The biggest lessons I have learned is do not sweat the small stuff, take one step at a time and do not expect to leap to the top. Manufacturing has been challenging, many delays, lots of things go wrong but I now deal with one problem at a time, try to find a solution without complaining and work at least six months in advance to avoid crippling delays. How has having your own platform supported being able to successfully launch your own brand? It has been a great advantage of course but mostly due to having access to so many women (and men) and having one on one conversations. I made notes of all the chats we had, the styling questions and what they needed but couldn’t find; this was invaluable. I showed some of my community my samples in the early stages and got their feedback. Then there is the marketing factor. I have an audience that I like to think trust me as I have always been very open and see them as friends, I have made so many true friends. A huge advantage was having my audience for over ten years. The trust is there, the relationships are there, and they know my history and journey. The downside is, I felt like I had many eyes on me and people had high expectations. I did not want to let anyone down, I really put my heart and soul into this. A little is pressure is good, it brings the best out of me.

We speak to Founder Claire Chanelle of newly launched brand Rue Sloane, on what it takes to launch your own line and why you need a precise eye for detail
AMY SESSIONS
WORDS:
37 emirateswoman.com FASHION
38 emirateswoman.com FASHION

I know in my heart we have done our best. You’ve launched with a small, well considered edit. Was this the goal from the outset? Let’s say it was a realistic edit. If I had more time to sample and more budget, I would have liked to launch with a full capsule collection. We have a blouse, a dress, basic tees and sporty pieces to come. We also have homeware, childrenswear and menswear coming! I am happy with our first drop. The London Duster is the hero piece. We have the basics covered with the knitted sets, some accessories and our pearl “Tallulah” jacket which is our trophy piece. We covered the foundation of a capsule collection. All our drops will be small, you do not need an excessive number of pieces each season. You need well thought out pieces that can be worn multiples ways and mixed and matched to create endless looks. Rue Sloane does the thinking for you, so you do not need to plan or stress when getting dressed. How do you balance the creative and commercial sides of the business, and do you feel more drawn to on than the other? Absolutely, I am drawn to all things creative. I also have a business mind. Business is not just numbers and logistics; business thinking is a very creative world and I thrive on this side of the brand. My skill is intuition for trends. My online community knows I have a track record for predicting trends, look at the fashion week runway in September, it was all about the duster coats! This combined with my love of business, scaling companies and my 20 years’ experience in styling, it is a strong balance. I know my strengths and I know my weaknesses. My advice is to focus on your strengths and find the right people to do the rest. Rue Sloane was founded by my husband and I. Paris has a finance background and we have opposite strengths. He looks after the finances, the tech side (he built the website alone), the legal aspects, photography, videography, and all logistics such as shipping, our office etc. It also helps he speaks multiple languages. Paris is French so this helped with Premiere Vision and buying fabric in France. It is very useful to have an understanding in Italian for the mills and factories. I could never do this alone; we have done this as a couple and even shot all the pieces ourselves. We launched this whole brand with just us two and it is all self-funded. How will you approach scaling without compromising on quality? I am very passionate about this. My plan is to put a lot of effort into our relationships with the mills and factories. We will need to constantly research fabrics and mills to ensure we source the best quality. A lot of research and effort. We have tried our very best to ensure we have high quality for an attainable price. I hope we can continue this with the support of our customers.

Have you had any mentors along the way and if so, what knowledge did they impart? Yes, Timothy Oulton. We sadly lost him this year; I wish I could show him this article. He was so humble he would have been so embarrassed. Tim was incredibly talented and successful but the most kind and humble man. Reputation is the utmost importance, how we make others feel is what leaves a lasting impression. I feel very lucky to have sat down with Tim and learn from his advice. Mostly to be around him and see how he built a brand with integrity, classic good quality pieces that last a lifetime without following trends. The way Tim treated his team like family and the kindness he showed us. I learned so much from him regarding building a company with integrity, to be kind, not to jump on trends and only create what you love and believe in. Stay kind, humble and have a little fun along the way. So, Tim, I will dazzle as many people as I can. What advice would you give to your younger self? To only care about the opinions of people you love and people who know you. Try your best, if you fail you can be proud you could not have done anymore, and it was not meant to be. When things do not work out, accept it is not for you and bigger things are coming. We have sewn some of my favorite quotes into the care labels. Each design

has a different quote, a quote I find inspiring. A little touch from me to each customer. This is The Reset Issue – what is the best way to reset? Family and health are my most important focus. My son is my world and everything I do is for him. I want him to be proud of me when he is a man. My husband and my mum are my two best friends and I love nothing more than spending time with them. I am very simple in my personal life, I like to be at home, simple food and be with my little family. I enjoy my alone time, so I can reset, recharge and clear my head. I listen to inspiring worship music daily, it makes me feel calm, motivated and grateful. I thank God and the universe for what I have, and I feel ready to take on any challenges.

Professor Augustinus Bader (AB) spent over three decades developing healing products for burn victims. In 2018, he decided to harness the groundbreaking technology he had pioneered to create his namesake skincare brand, Augustinus Bader, with his cofounder Charles Rosier (CR). Just four years on, the Augustinus Bader range has become a renowned skincare brand loved and religiously used by thousands around the world

Talk us through your career. AB: My medical training took me all around the world. I studied in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, and Harvard in the US. I also travelled to the Ruijin Hospital in Shanghai to work in their burns unit. It was here that I first witnessed the immense trauma, suffering, and accompanying scar formation caused by burn injuries. Especially cases involving children usually require multiple, complex, painful surgeries to remove thick scar tissue that would otherwise cripple their growth and development. This experience stayed with me – I wanted to find a way to improve these types of treatment. Completing my specialization in Medical Biotechnology, combined with my education as an experimental surgeon, led me to Hannover to study under pioneering scientist Professor Pichlmayer learning the field of clinical organ transplant. This training was the catalyst for my desire to understand organ failure and wound healing. I became the first professor of Tissue Engineering at the University of Tuebingen and then, later, the first Chair of the Stem Cell Biology department at the University of Leipzig. While supporting the university, answering demands to give close to 500 lectures over the years, and inventing and patenting over 200 key technologies, I maintained the motivation to improve and alleviate the suffering of children with severe and disfiguring burns. I spent decades researching stem cell capabilities to repair our bodies to develop a treatment that would provide scar-free healing, culminating in developing a groundbreaking wound gel for skin regeneration. How did you find your way into the beauty space? AB: My mission started with the intention to help burn victims, particularly children with traumatic injuries. Several years ago, I developed a medical-grade hydrogel to treat children with severe burns but found it challenging to secure grants to fund the clinical testing required to bring it to the market. At that point, I met the brand’s co-founder, Charles Rosier, who had the vision to apply similar techniques to create skincare products to help fund more trials. It took two years of convincing – but after realizing that the cream was giving people

confidence and happiness, I agreed to adapt the technology to create a more intelligent product for everyday use. What inspired you to start your own brand?

AB: After three decades of research into wound, skin, and trauma healing, I discovered the triggering and stimulating mechanisms of stem cells and, subsequently, how to replicate the natural healing process that occurs in minor injuries. I developed a medical treatment based on my findings that could cure and rejuvenate damaged tissue with unprecedented efficiency. Despite promising results and many possible fields of application, I was struggling to secure funding for further clinical testing. Charles Rosier, my partner in this enterprise, had the vision to apply the technology to skincare consumer products to fund my research. He thought if the technology could turn burned skin into perfect skin, then the know-how could be used to develop innovative skincare to help with wrinkles. At the time, the idea did not wholly convince me, but I started to prototype a skincare product for certain patients with problematic or fragile skin. The creams made a real difference to the people, and they kept coming back asking for more. After two years of Charles’ perseverance, I finally understood the potential to apply this knowledge of intrinsic stem cell communication to develop a skincare-approved product. How have things evolved since Augustinus Bader launched in 2018? AB: Since the brand’s launch, we have always focused on constant research and innovation, creating the most technologically advanced formulas and growing our portfolio of products to address customer needs. We are always in the lab looking to improve and innovate. We have built the identity of Augustinus Bader through the quality of the skincare. The people who use the product see a positive impact on their skin. We can’t compromise with that. Our most recent innovation is The Eyebrow and Lash Enhancing Serum. It uses our proprietary TFC8 technology to address the underlying causes of diminishing lashes and thinning brows, supporting better follicle functioning and natural growth. It provides a solution for those looking for a clean, irritation-free prod-

uct for visibly fuller, longer brows and lashes. You’re one of the fastest-growing beauty brands today. What has the response to the brand been like? AB: Seeing how many people have been helped by our products has been incredibly gratifying. Word of mouth recommending the creams to friends by satisfied users has been the best response, and it makes us proud to realize this. The skin’s beauty and elasticity are meaningful external signs everyone can see.

CR: We are the only emerging brand with a real chance to disrupt the hierarchy of the big established groups. We live in a world where newcomers are constantly disrupting established hierarchies. In the beauty world, this disruption has yet to happen. We have a shot to take a seat at the table with the big guys. If you look at our growth, we are on a trajectory where we have detached from emerging brands but still need the presence of the big guys. In five years, we’re going to be there. The entire brand is designed to work as a collective. How does each product work with one another? CR: We genuinely believe the world doesn’t need more products, so we want to confirm that our products rank number one in each category. We are a product and science-driven company, not a marketingdriven company. Our voice will remain consistent no matter what we launch, and that’s all about science and quality. Since every skincare product from Augustinus Bader uses the same TFC8 complex, there’s no need to slather layers of formula onto your skin in a multi-step routine to achieve the best effects. Just one product is enough for your skin to reap self-renewing benefits. When picking the best product(s) for you, it’s more a preference for texture. Those who prefer a lightweight formula might opt for the brand’s The Serum, or if they like a creamy moisturizer, then The Rich Cream will do the trick. Some products also have targeted benefits depending on what type of area of the body or face it is. For instance, The Eye Cream is spiked with specific ingredients to combat under-eye puffiness and dark circles; these are in addition to TFC8, which supports the body’s natural renewal processes and boosts the skin’s health. AB: Our focus has always been on our products’ science and efficacy; for us, it’s quality

over quantity. Our TFC8® technology – a patented formulation assisting in transport mechanisms for skin repair – can address many skin concerns, so we expanded our offering to our customers to provide a choice of texture and application properties. The reason we are not recommending a multistep routine is that we believe that as long as you have one product with TFC8®, you will see results.

How has Augustinus Bader changed the skincare game? CR: Unlike other skincare brands, we are backed by over 30 years of research in cellular repair and Professor Bader’s deep understanding of stem cell biology, tissue engineering, and regenerative medicine. All Augustinus Bader topical products are powered by our patented skincare technology TFC8® (Trigger Factor Complex), which is composed of natural amino acids, high-grade vitamins, and synthesized molecules that are naturally found in the skin. Augustinus Bader is a technology platform that leverages our disruptive skincare discovery about cellular communication. The key to our success is creating formulations that genuinely work. They work because they’re based on the physiological knowledge of the skin’s intrinsic repair code that originated from Professor Bader’s medical research. It’s precisely because our DNA

is different from other companies that we have achieved powerful consumer interest. You’ve got celebrities around the globe who are fans of the brand. Who are the most prolific people who have used the brand? CR: A prominent advocate for moisturizer, Hailey Bieber, also shared in an interview with The Skincare Edit that Augustinus Bader’s The Rich Cream is one she uses daily. Kate Bosworth has described herself as “addicted” to Augustinus Bader’s skincare products. Others like Victoria Beckham, Naomi Campell, Demi Moore, Dakota Johnson, Ashley Graham, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brad Pitt, Kate Elson, Jennifer Aniston, and Gemma Chan are also among the many celebrities who use Augustinus Bader’s products. We also have high-profile investors such as Melanie Griffith, Carla Bruni, and Courteney Cox. You recently entered the GCC market. What was the motivation behind this? CR: For our brand, it is a significant opportunity as it allows expanding our footprint in the global premium market. What, in your opinion, are the brand’s hero products? AB: The Rich Cream and The Cream are very popular as they suit the texture preferences of the most common skin types, normal-oily, combination, and dry. We achieved in creating a formulation that works. The reason it works is that we respect the physiology of human skin with a knowledge base that just originated in recent years. The products are innovative in this sense. We released products that bring a real solution to our customers – our focus was on maintaining the highest efficacy levels while viewing the long-term goal of better overall skin health. We are pioneers in this respect today in our niche. Throughout your career in the beauty space, what have been the challenges you’ve had to overcome? AB: I developed ‘TFC8’, a novel transporting agent. After many years of researching the regenerative capabilities of stem cells, I began to understand how the body healed itself in conditions of trauma and inflammation. My research findings were the basis for the creation of the first trial of the Trigger Factor Complex (TFC1), developed for a medical-grade hydrogel that has the potential to repair large traumatic wounds without the need for skin grafting. The complexity of applying medical technology (hydrogel) to consumer skin care was situational. The hydrogel came from a situation where we had wounds with open skin in a clinical setting. It was complicated to change the approach for intact skin as it has to navigate the body’s natural healing code differently. We eventually found a solution –The Trigger Factor Complex 8 (TFC8) is the eighth trial of the complex, adapted to create a non-medical skincare mechanism, to deliver essential actives to the cell microenvironment in the right concentrations, supporting the skin to assume a healthy renewal process. And the milestones? AB: For us, it is incredibly flattering to be recognized by our peers. It confirms that our ambition isn’t too crazy. It was a massive endorsement of what we have achieved as a brand. They weren’t judging the best marketing campaign but the best skincare product. Today, our number one asset is still our product. We may not have the same marketing budget or distribution as our competitors, but our product sets us apart.

The Wellness Guru

We discuss optimising health and beauty from the inside out with Dr Simoné Laubscher, Co-Founder of WelleCo

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? I love my morning ritual for it really sets my day up to flow. I also recommend this to all of my clients as this 10-15 minute of mindfulness is a game changer, so you honour yourself before you then pour out to others during the day. It helps keep you stay grounded and peaceful and less likely to be triggered into stress mode each day. I always break my fast each morning after sleeping with 500ml of water with a squeeze of fresh lemon or lime. I then take 1015 minutes, while my house is still quiet, before I help get my three kids sorted for school. I close my eyes and take five deep breaths and connect with myself. I think & feel five things that I’m grateful for and I hold the feeling that all of my needs are met (my bliss) for one or two minutes. This is a neuroscience technique I learnt recently as I’m doing another Masters in Neuroscience at the moment. I then mix up my WelleCo Super Elixir (500ml of water + 2 tsp of the super elixir), shake in my hydrator bottle and I’m ready to start my day & help get my kids off to school. After this is done, I then move my body for 30-60 minutes & I intuitively decide each morning if I swim, dance, walk, cycle, do a yoga or Pilates class. Living in the UAE I’m blessed to be able to get out into the sea to get my bare feet on the earth and do grounding to reset my nervous system but when it’s summertime I opt for my home gym and have regular Epsom salt baths instead.

What were the steps to launching WelleCo and do you remember the day you decided to take the leap of faith to launch? For me becoming a partner in WelleCo was an organic process that was born out of Elle Macpherson’s own authentic wellness journey, coming to see me as a client at Rejuv, my Harley Street clinic in London. I simply helped Elle get well and shift into optimum health, like I’ve done with all of my clients for the past 25 years. Elle came to me approaching her 50th birthday with many imbalances and she had low energy, dry skin, poor sleep habits, high inflammation, weight gain, cravings, mood imbalances, hormonal issues etc. (all very typical for me working as a Naturopath in Functional Medicine). Her GP said her blood tests revealed she was normal for her age, but Elle wanted to thrive not just survive so she came to see me. I had been formulating supplements for over seven years when I met Elle, so I balanced her 7 Pillars of wellness including her nutrition and supplementation. Within a month Elle came back looking and feeling amazing. I had put her on my Rejuv Wellness plant-based supplements and this to me was how WelleCo was born. Elle turned to me leaving my clinic on her second visit and simply said ‘I don’t want to take your capsules I would rather you formulated for me a complete elixir that I can simply add to water each day. I replied sure I can do that!’ and that is how The Super Elixir was born. a wonderful spontaneous act of The Universe and so no real leap of faith needed just a shift into formulating a new exciting wellness collection to help bring about wellness. How did your previous training equip you for having your own wellness company and what were the problems you saw across the board from your patients? I’ve been trading clients for 25 years, I have a bachelors, Masters and PhD in nutrition so I’m a bit of a research geek. By staying patient focused and always researching for solutions for my clients I was equipped to have my own wellness company. Due to many of my own health issues across my career, overcoming these have also really helped equip me along the way.

Eating disorders, huge trauma from domestic violence, infertility and breast cancer have all helped to serve me well and equip me with a great toolbox so I can be empathetic with my clients. I feel the science, research & clinical practice combined with my own struggles have helped me become a really good naturopath. My clients have also blessed me for I have treated most conditions over my career from cancer to hormone & thyroid issues to anxiety and depression to ADHD to metabolic and obesity issues to gut issues like Chrons and IBS. Having such an exciting cross-section of cases over my career has also helped equip me along the way.

When you launched were you surprised by how quickly it scaled?

To be honest not really for I knew hand on my heart no one was doing what we were doing. I have been formulating for 15 years for Rejuv and eight years for WelleCo and I have seen the huge success with my clients by using plant based whole food, non-

synthetic supplements. I also saw the huge value in functional support of the body’s 11 systems, no one was thinking about that really all those years ago. There are a lot of basic green powders on the market but not supporting at a cellular level to help the mind and body heal itself. Once again having my own issues and becoming increasingly frustrated with the vitamin industry becoming so synthetic, allowed me to think outside the box and create The Super Elixir, as our first WelleCo formula. How do we need to approach wellness differently as we get older? We all need to nourish 7 pillars of wellness, to give the body what it needs to stay well. I came up with these 7 pillars after treating clients for 25 years for I realised even though we are all identically different we also have the same pathways and 100 trillion cells that need to be supported to stay well. The 7 wellness pillars of wellness include sleep, nutrition, movement, supplementation (plant based not synthetic), mindfulness, body balance and environmental toxic load (what you put on your skin and the health of the environments you live and work in). Many also ask why we need to supplement, and I always reply explaining that due to overarming and many toxic chemicals added to our food we need to supplement to reduce inflammation and help our body’s function for this is the key to reduce ageing. Even for me, I just turned 50 but my biological (internal age) is 34 and this is the goal, for sure you have less wrinkles but mainly you prevent disease and promote ageing well. This is why taking just two tsp of the Super Elixir each day is so important as it provides your body with all the missing nutrients not in our food these days and the functional support so our bodies can heal. Getting enough essential protein is also key for as we age, we don’t absorb animal protein as well so taking a vegan protein powder, such as WelleCo Nourishing Protein, gives your body the building blocks it needs to stay strong. Deep restorative sleep is also key for if you don’t get good quality sleep you never detox from the day you just had, which drives inflammation and disease. The three supplements I just mentioned is what we call our WelleCo 3 Steps Welle to provide the optimum foundational wellness support. How important are meditation, mindfulness and daily movement in seeing optimal results? Absolutely essential and why I include mindfulness as part of our 7 pillars of wellness. If you’re super stressed and triggered each day by others or your inner critic you will live in emergency mode/fight or flight and this first of all shuts the immune system down and causes vasoconstriction, reducing blood flow to all areas of the body increasing the risk of disease. Taking a moment to connect with yourself each morning and choosing to stay in today, such as my morning routine mentioned earlier, will help reduce stress. By staying in today & letting go of yesterday and tomorrow will free us up to enjoy each day. Of course, me must plan and take care of our futures but letting go of what we cannot control, dealing up our faith and dealing down our fear is essential if you want to be well. Movement is also a key part of this for the endorphins produced from the exercise help us shake off stress, increasing our capacity to handle all that life throws at us. Do you recommend a low inflammation diet as the best and what supplements should we be taking to ensure we get all the nutrients we need? Yes, all disease starts with inflammation, so I suggest eating more plants and less animals. For me that doesn’t mean going vegan, that is your personal choice, but being wise about reducing inflammatory foods such as meat, dairy, sugar, processed and fast foods is key. The absolute best supplement to combat inflammation is

super greens for they bombard your cells with oxygenating chlorophyll helping your body flush out acidic wastes and fight disease. I feel The Super Elixir is the best super greens on the market as based on my many years of experience I synergistically blended the best whole for ingredients that work together to bring about the most amplified effects to scale up your health. Also being a powder mixed with water or fresh veggie juice creates an ionic solution delivery directly to the cell, limited digestive function needed. This is key for with all the chemicals in our food and environment, I have seen poor gut function rise exponentially over my 25-year career with the gut brain axis of most of my clients being greatly impaired causing a huge array or physical, mental and emotional issues. Which have been the most popular products to date, and do you use them daily yourself? I love our 3 Steps for this keeps my wellness foundation in place: The Super Elixir, Nourishing protein and Sleep Welle tea. I also use our Collagen, Skin and Hair Elixir daily as I’m now fifty. I also rotate in the Immune Elixir to combat colds or flu if I ever feel something coming along to nip that in the bud so I don’t get sick. Even though I’m fifty my periods are regular, so I don’t take the goddess Elixir yet, but I gave my daughter the PMS elixir and she is now back to being her calm, happy self with very mild PMS around her period.

What would be your advice to others wanting to launch a wellness brand? To be authentic and to come from a place of your own wellness journey, staying client and not money focused. Then the business will flow and grow organically, and the finances take care of themselves for you are helping so many along the way.

What drives you when times are tough? Staying client focused and helping one client at a time as I know what it is like to be trapped in poor health, feeling like there is no way out. Knowing that I can help another find their bespoke healing protocol, brings me so much joy, helping others get free and live a life they love.

What have been the biggest challenges to date and how did you overcome them? The biggest challenge is always letting go what you can’t control and staying focused on what you can. Often, we carry a double load of what we can and can’t control. Being accountable on this is key to prevent burn out and to allow myself to enjoy the journey.

What advice would you give to your younger self? To just run my race, don’t look to the left or right and not to compare. My life path, my destiny is unique to me so just get on with it for no one can steal this, only I can sabotage this by falling down due to feeling not good enough and comparing myself to others.

When you travel, how do you stay consistent in your morning routine and what essentials do you need to take with you? I always do my morning routine and pack my trainers so at least I can walk whatever city I am in. I also pack my 3 steps well and extra Immune Elixir to keep me strong with long haul flights and different time zones.

This is The Reset Issue – what is the best way to reset? I love our 30 days Welle program for it is so simple and yet so effective. You clean up your nutrition, balance your 7 pillars of wellness and supplement with whole food nutrition so you have a powerful long-lasting mind body reset.

Talk us through your career? I started interning as a Fashion Assistant at Hearst Group [formerly, The National Magazine Company in London] whilst studying. It was there that I found my love for fashion and editorial and wanted to be part of the industry. I later graduated in English Literature and moved to Dubai at age 22, where I began work as a production manager. Working there opened up doors into editorial, advertising and many other production divisions in the region, allowing me to later niche my experience specifically when going freelance and producing regularly for the likes of NET-APORTER, luxury magazines and more both regionally and internationally. I am very grateful for the experience I gained in the region, and to the place I call home, Dubai.

FlowThough I loved my career as a creative producer, I always felt something was missing. The once loved 14-hour shoot-days became mundane and the fast paced zero work/life balance lifestyle I’d created for myself, in the end made me feel unhealthy. Later that summer as a result, I suffered an ectopic pregnancy and decided that it was time for change. As a way to unwind from work, I had started Reformer Pilates and I loved what it did for my mind and body.

During lockdown I started taking Pilates more seriously and decided to train as a teacher. While training in Pilates, I naturally started teaching it to other people – wanting others around me to believe and love it as much as I did. I became so passionate about it that it clicked that this was my calling. Other than my actual Pilates certification, I have

always been a very spiritual person and enjoy being around like-minded people that inspire and teach me things I do not know, especially in the mind-body practices. Life is always about learning and I take great pleasure in learning new realms of wellness in physical and mental forms. Spirituality, meditation, law of attraction, crystal healing, acupuncture [& TCM] are all areas of wellbeing that I actively practice in my everyday life. What inspired you to launch POSTURE.? Having worked with fashion magazines and brands throughout my career, I wanted to create a brand that married the two worlds together. My love of Pilates and fashion fuelled my vision to create POSTURE. as being a positive and inviting space that was modern, minimalistic and healing. I knew I wanted more than to become a freelance instructor as I’d spent my whole adult career in Dubai predominantly freelancing, so it felt like the right time to found my own company.

I had been to many studios in London and New York that just had something about them, and without fail always made me feel so excited to visit – I wanted that for myself and I wanted that for Dubai. I took everything I had learned in my life so far, put pen to paper, and began making my dream a reality. I think ultimately, it’s not just a workout that people want to experience, it’s a carefully designed space for people to belong, and for people who share the same likes and passions; to feel seen/part of a community. At POSTURE. we hand-selected all of our equipment and décor from all around the globe to ensure we were different and catered

to the luxury clientele. We were selective with the instructors we hired; the schools they had qualified from, their energy, their overall vibe and aesthetic. We partnered only with brands that we felt on-brand with – ethically and aesthetically. We curated our music/ playlists to suit our routines to give a little extra flare to our classes (increasing their stamina both physically & mentally, as well as including cognitive learning by moving to the tempo of the beat making Pilates a fun and fresh workout) and we have designed and created POSTURE. Merchandise to further strength our brand. The space included practicing a slice of wellness in our everyday schedule – from our breathwork at the start of every class, to our wellness club workshops in sound healing & Yin meditation, to ending on our signature affirmation cards to finish our practice together in every session. It ALL matters – every little detail as that’s what makes us who we are as a brand. You practice the original style of Joseph Pilates – tell us more. Contrology was the original name for Pilates. Joseph Pilates conceived it as a mental and physical conditioning in which individuals could work their bodies to their full potential. He designed a series of dynamic physical exercises to correct muscular imbalances which would improve posture, co-ordination, balance, strength and flexibility using apparatus such as Reformer, Cadillac, Wunder Chair, Barrel & Mat. We practice the same – following the original repertoire with a mix of classical and contemporary moves. At POSTURE. we include and perfect the six principles of Pilates during every session so that our clients are getting the full knowledge of the repertoire and coming to POSTURE. to learn. These six principles include concentration, control, centre, precision, flow and breathing. What lies at the core of POSTURE. and at the DNA of the brand? POSTURE. is essentially a community for like-minded people to escape their realities and connect with their inner-selves. Whether their workouts are more active and fast paced, or relaxing and meditative, POSTURE. is for people who appreciate being in an environment surrounded by luxuries. POSTURE. is all about getting to know your body and its boundaries and cultivating that all-important Qi. Our studio’s method focuses not just on the strength & mobility of the Pilates repertoire but building your form and core too. I talk about Cultivating the Qi a lot in my sessions, as it is something in the last year I had researched and explored when physically, I needed it. What are the key benefits of Reformer Pilates? The Reformer accommodates a full range motion, using your body weight against the resistance of the springs and carriage; making this a unique full-body workout providing a strong focus on core strength + muscle

engagement which improves performance, weight loss, balance, back-pain plus our favourite POSTURE. At POSTURE. we split our classes into two levels to cater for all which includes the reformer flow for beginners and an intermediate level. It’s best for those new to the reformer and those that require an introduction to the principles of Pilates at a slower and controlled pace. It’s designed to tone, lengthen and strengthen and reinforce the importance of a strong core and great posture. The next level is reformer tempo for an intermediate and advanced level. It’s best for those familiar with the reformer plus the principles of Pilates, can keep up

with the pace and be ready to work up an upbeat sweat to the beat of our curated playlists. The benefits range from increasing both physical and mental stamina and raising everyone’s Pilates techniques to the next level. As a next generation Pilates instructor, what are the basic skills you want to instill in your students? All of our instructors have their own groove and style to enhance the collective passion for wellness, fitness, spiritualism. We want to bring a fresh holistic energy to Mat & Reformer Pilates – introducing the core values of Joseph Pilates’ repertoire on the Mat, and one that compliments their practice with the Reformer too. Our studio focuses not just on the flow of the Pilates repertoire, but building your form and core; and one that honours your practice with your daily wellbeing too. Our routines are designed to activate that all important parasympathetic phase of relaxation that we all need more of, certainly living up to POSTURE.’s ethos of a mind-body-soul experience, that focuses on getting to know your body and its boundaries and cultivating that all important Qi. What piece of advice would you give to your younger self? Passion and drive are everything over base level talent. There are millions of people in the world doing the same job, but what makes you different is your unique passion and drive in what you do. Ultimately, people buy into you as a person, over your qualifications. What makes you different is what you need to keep asking yourself to drive yourself to do better and be better.

This is The Reset Issue – how can we reset from inside out? “Not only is health a normal condition, but it is our duty to not only to attain it but to maintain it.” – Joseph Pilates. A famous quote from the man himself. I believe everyone should take time to learn and become aware of yourself and your daily habits. Being mindful and practicing wellness in your everyday life will really impact the way you live. I work with many clients that suffer with poor posture – most suffering with ‘popular’ back issues like Sciatica/Kyphosis and wonder why. If we carry ourselves in a way of poor posture, it can distort how our body should be feeling. We start to hunch our shoulders, look down at the floor more, feeling negative – instead of opening up our shoulders, walking proud and having a positive look on life.

If we constrict our body due to bad posture, it not only affects the way we walk, our nervous system, digestive system and even joints are affected causing them to shift their position and change. Over time, this shows in your everyday life in how you carry yourself.

RECALIBRATE

Anisha Joshi, Osteopath at Euromed Clinic Dubai, explains how recalibrating your body will help you go into 2023 with renewed strength

64 emirateswoman.com BEAUTY

Talk us through your career. With my parents collectively working four different jobs to partly fund my journey through private school, this work ethic was something I carry through my life now. My sister and I both decided to go down the osteopathy route, so determination and hard work is something that runs in my family. After graduating in 2010 from the British College of Osteopathic Medicine in London, I decided to travel across the globe to Australia where I cut my teeth in osteopathy, gaining a wealth of experience before deciding to open my clinic at the age of 23. With support from my parents – they remortgaged their house twice to put the initial deposit down – I managed to open my own clinic. Fast-forward 13 years; the clinic’s growth has been impressive; hiring multiple practitioners has seen it grow from one treatment room to six across two different locations.

Since then, I have won Principal Osteopath of the Year, appeared on This Morning TV show and have been sought out by many magazines and national papers for expert commentary. My patient list includes many professional athletes as well as A-list celebrities such as Rita Ora, who seek out my advice and treatment. After the global pandemic and its subsequent lockdown, I decided to merge with my sister to form Osteo Allies; where we are keen to continue expanding our brand and creating opportunities to nurture fellow osteopaths. What inspired you to enter the healthcare space? I’ve always been inspired by how amazing the human body is and how it doesn’t take much in order for it to adapt and get better.

What does your role as an osteopath entail? People still assume that osteopaths just help bones or back pain, but most aches and pains have multiple factors that contribute to them. Osteopaths conduct a detailed case history and ensure that they take all elements of your lifestyle into consideration. This includes nutrition, your mental health, and exercises. Combining advice in all these areas helps to support your complaint. The main difference between a treatment with an osteopath and a sports masseuse is the in-depth assessment an osteopath will provide you. Osteopathy is a complete system of diagnosis, treatment and overall management.

When it comes to aches and pains, what do you find is the biggest cause? In a world where most of us spend half of our time at a desk, experiencing shoulder and neck pain is very common, and is something which often develops into headaches. Usually, this occurs when someone has been doing something in the same position for too long; working on a computer, for example. The majority of pain is due to a lack of movement. What is the biggest issue people come to see you to help with? The biggest issue people come to see me to help with is back pain. In fact, 84 per cent of people will experience back pain at some point in their life. There is a lot of fear around back pain, but the truth is that it occurs in varying degrees. Those who experience persistent pain come to me for a diagnosis and treatment plan so that we can work together to strengthen their body.

In terms of your career, you’re a female working in a male dominated space. What’s this like and how do you hope to change the narrative for women in this space? As a young woman of colour I had to work

doubly hard in a white male medical world but far from deterring me; if anything it spurred me on. I hope that my career thus far stands as an example that women can not only succeed in this space, but also become one of the leaders in their field. How have you harnessed the use of social media to share your tips and tricks? I have found social media to be a great tool for sharing my expert tips and tricks with a wider audience. I frequently post Reels on my Instagram (@osteoanisha) giving advice on a variety of topics and educating my audience on the best ways to easily relieve certain muscle stresses and pains. It’s amazing to be able to share my passion for osteopathy with lots of people all at the same time. What advice do you wish you had received at the start of your journey? I guess the advice I wish I had got was that you may at times feel like you’re undeserving of your success. However, the impact you will have on other peoples’ lives is beyond what you feel about yourself.

Looking back over your career, can you tell us some major hurdles you’ve had to overcome? I’ve had to overcome the fact that many people don’t know what osteopaths do. I’ve also had to overcome the pandemic when unfortunately my business didn’t receive any government help and I was on the verge of filing for bankruptcy. It was a really tough time and I had to make some tough decisions to make the business work. I never thought that a year after the pandemic I’d have expanded my business into three clinics in the UK and now a clinic in Dubai. On the opposite end of the spectrum, what are your top milestones from your career so far? I am lucky to say that there are various milestones in my career which I am very proud of. Being awarded Principal Osteopath of the Year by the prestigious Institute of Osteopathy was a huge achievement for me and solidified my position as one of Britain’s leading osteopaths. Appearing on ITV’s This Morning, to discuss the benefits of treatment and tips to keep moving, is another notable milestone. Finally, I have recently spent some time in Dubai after partnering with Euromed Clinic. This has been an amazing experience for me and has not only allowed me to experience a new place but also to meet a variety of amazing people and patients.

Your top tips for taking care of aches and pains at home? To take care of aches and pains at home, it is important to make an effort to do strengthening exercises to alleviate muscle stiffness and get an early night’s sleep. Movement and sleep are both research-driven practices that can help ease body soreness. As well as this, nutrition plays a big role in muscle and joint repair. To stay energised, it is crucial to stay hydrated and eat a well-balanced, protein-heavy diet. Daily supplements of omega-3, magnesium and iron, all also help to promote better energy levels. Omega 3 is found in oily fish like salmon and is really important for muscles, joints, skin and hair. Also, relaxing in a warm bath is a great way to restore the body, acting as a way to switch off and relax. Going into 2023, what is your advice for living a more pain-free and healthy life? Recognise that pain isn’t a reflection of damage and that we need to move more than we think we do. In a world where we stay stationary more than ever, this is key. If you’re experiencing any aches or pains, then it’s good to chat to an osteopath. @osteoanisha

The Inner Reset

Jessica Sepel is Founder of wellness empire JSHealth. We discuss drive, going global and what it takes to reset from the inside out for optimal health

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like, your morning routine? I love my morning routine as it ensures I’m really set up for a wonderful, positive day. It took me some time to perfect but now I can’t go a day without it! I first begin with a meditation and workout from the JSHealth app –20 minutes is truly all you need! I sit on my balcony to do some manifestation, breathe in good energy and push away the bad energy and situations that no longer serve me. I visualise my highest self, at her healthiest and happiest. A must-have every morning for me is of course coffee! A strong oat cappuccino is my go-to, and I stick to the JSH rule which is one cup before 11am. And then it’s time for a cold shower – my grandmother taught me this from a young age, it stimulates blood flow and clears the energy. I also make it non-negotiable to keep my social media apps off my phone (I actually delete them the night before, it takes literally two minutes!). When I arrive at work for the day, I feel energised and ready for a great day. What were the steps to launching JS Health and do you remember the day you decided to take the leap of faith to launch? JSHealth was born out of my pure passion for vitamins, which I’ve had from a young age. I actually worked at a pharmacy part time during my schooling years and would stroll the aisles reading all the labels and learning everything I could about different formulas! My sisters used to make fun of me for having so many vitamins in the bathroom cupboard.

Like many women, I was pulled into the difficult cycle of fad dieting during my teen years. You name the diet – I tried it. I ended

up being so addicted to the number on the scale and was actually doing the opposite of the JSHealth way – restricting myself and giving my body the bare nutrients to thrive just in order to be skinnier. It’s so sad to look back at this time now but it’s my truth!

Things finally fell into place for me when I decided to study nutrition. I have an amazingly supportive partner and family who encouraged me to nurture myself back to health. I started a blog sharing my struggles (way before being an Influencer was ‘cool’!) and my husband (boyfriend at the time) encouraged me to share it with the world. Pretty quickly I had landed my first book deal, launched a programme and released an app all about the JSHealth way. At the same time, I was working as a nutritionist with women in a clinic every day. Listening to the community, hearing their struggles and prescribing root-cause protocols was fuelling me with so much passion – so vitamins was the natural next step. And so, Hair + Energy was born! When you launched were you surprised by how quickly it scaled? I was very fortunate that I had spent years connecting with the community though my blog and online platforms! I have always said that JSHealth is a community not a company, which led to the success of the brand. I think truly listening to our customers, which we still do to this day allows for the products to be formulated in direct response to consumer needs. Hair + Energy was the first formulation because this is what so many were struggling with! Which have been the most popular supplements to date? We have our global bestsellers Hair + Energy, Detox + Debloat and Skin

+ Digestion, all full of incredible researchbacked ingredients at the highest quality we can source.

What has been the scariest moment to date and what enabled you to move through that fear and continue to scale and grow both professionally and personally? Something I am now starting to open up more about is my mental health crisis that I experienced a few years ago, after losing my best friend to mental health. It was during a time of immense growth for the company but unfortunately, I just didn’t care about any of it. It was a really scary time personally having never experienced mental ill-health before, I wasn’t sure how to navigate it. Most days I wasn’t even able to leave bed.

Now looking back I’m so grateful for what it taught me – the resilience I learned through that time is what I needed, to be able to continue to face the daily struggles that still come with growing a business! I’m incredibly fortunate to see one of the best therapists in the field, and I still see her weekly to this day. It’s so important to have strategies and tools in place to support your mental health, and to never suffer in silence. Reach out to friends, to family or to a trusted professional if you’re needing help – a problem shared is a problem solved. How do you balance the creative and commercial sides of the business and do you feel more drawn to one than the other? My strength lies in product development, and it’s what I’m most passionate about! I’ve always been stronger in the creative side of the business, with so many ideas that come to me and exciting projects I want to see come to fruition! I’m now lucky that we have an amazing team who assist with all other aspects, including my husband Dean who is the CEO and the true people manager in our office. What would be your advice to others wanting to launch a wellness brand? My Dad always says, ‘Keep boxing!’ and it’s so true. You can’t even imagine or foresee some of the hurdles that will arise when starting any business, so all you can do is show up each day with a smile on your face and be kind to those around you. I truly believe karma rewards kindness and you get back what you give in this life!

What drives you when times are tough? From day one, JSHealth and JSHealth Vitamins has always come from pure care for the community and that will never change. Every day I receive the most amazing messages on email, through my DM’s, and through our Customer Support channels from people around the world. I feel so connected to each and every person in the community. I always remember that the ‘why’ is for them when days are hard – so sometimes I will pick up the phone to speak with community members or send them a DM and it makes all the

struggle worth it. When times are particu larly tough, I’m fortunate to have an incredi ble family and relationship, plus true friends who always check in and make me laugh. What have been the biggest challenges to date and how did you overcome them? be really challenging for women in this in dustry to be taken seriously, or at least that has been my experience where this sort of business is dominated by males in the industry. Luckily, this is changing with the power of social media. Female founders can now get together and celebrate and support one another! I always think that there is room for everyone at the table. How have you found social media in terms of supporting brand growth? Social media has been imperative for the growth of JSHealth –we really did start out as a social media brand! As our community was already fostered online, social media really allowed us to share the power of the formulas on a global scale. So many customers took to social media (and still do!) to share their stories, be vulnerable with their struggles and connect with one another. I really do see us as the most pow-

erful brand community. Social media also allowed us to organise meetups so I could meet our customers face to face. And, of course, we really utilised the power of influencers to spread the organic message behind the brand – something that is still so important. How do you approach scaling without compromising on quality? Quality will always be my number one priority. My customers and their health come first so quality is always going to be number one – I will never settle on anything less than the best quality even if it means higher sourcing prices. We source from around the world. Our sustainably sourced Marine Collagen comes from deep sea cod from the pristine waters of Norway and our Certified Organic matcha powder comes from green tea that is grown and har-

vested in the renowned region of Kyoto, Japan. Our fish oil is produced from sustainable fisheries in Peru, Chile, Morocco and Turkey, and the Kelp in our Hair+Energy is exclusive to us, harvested in the waters of Nova Scotia and Brittany.

What advice would you give to your younger self? My gran Dolly is amazing, she’s 99 and has lived the most extraordinary life and worked so hard. She always says, ‘Don’t ever look to your left or your right, just keep looking forward and wake up every day and appreciate the gift of life and keep working hard.’ I think it’s so true – if you work d and are a good person with kindness in your heart – the success and the results will come. So, I guess I would just remind my younger self to have faith and be kind, that life is going to be an amazing journey and to just be grateful for each and every day. When you travel, how do you stay consistent in your morning routine and what essentials do you need to take with you? When I travel, I aim to keep my morning routine as close to routine as possible. Consistency really is the key to success! I always try to get my 20-minute app meditation and workouts in, even if that means setting up a towel on the hotel room floor. When it comes to travel essentials, I can’t go anywhere without a silk sk and cosy slippers. Everyone in our office will tell you I wear slippers daily; it really is the best hack to feeling good wherever you go! And of course, our PM+ Sleep ormula, which is packed with amazing herbs and vitamins like Lavender to ensure a deep and restful night’s sleep.

If you could recommend a game changer (or three) of a book that truly helped you change

I don’t think you can go past ‘You Can Heal Your Life’ by Louise L Hay. This book is one I continue to come back to time and time again, it’s charged with such amazing manifestations, affirmations and mantras. I sometimes even flick to a page intuitively to see any messages that stick out to me! Louise writes with such honesty and clarity that you can really feel the power of her words through the pages. I totally believe that the power of your life is in your hands, so I will always hold this book close to my heart. A MUST read. This is The Reset Issue – what is the best way to reset? One of my favourite ways to reset after a busy day is to go on a night walk with my husband Dean. We love walking by the ocean and breathing in the fresh air and make it a rule to leave our phones at home so we can really connect with one another and the environment. There is something really magical about the stars being out and the clear sky of a nighttime to really ground you and wash off the energy of the day. It helps us sleep so soundly too, a true gamechanger for the entire week!

The Body Reset

What do the first 30 minutes of your day look like/your morning routine? It’s very important to commit to a morning ritual. It helps you set your day up in the right way and can have some drastic effects on your focus and productivity. Usually when I wake up, I make my bed, light some candles and put on some relaxing music, to keep my home comfortable and filled with a clear energy throughout the day. I practise 10 min of Tai chi, which clears my head and energises my body. I grab a coffee and some breakfast and start my day. These are simple steps, but they help me feel better on a daily basis. What is the core DNA of your brand and the health principles you live by? Therapy by Dee was started in 2018, it was a natural start, a wake-call after spending a long period of time working in the corporate world, discovering that my main passion in life was helping others improve their lives. Holistic refers to “a whole person” approach to wellness intervention, simultaneously focusing on both the mind and the physical aspects of health. It’s an opportunity for patients to better address their psychological and physical needs, and achieve a complete healing. The relationship between mind and matter fascinated me, especially in regard to immediate tangible results among patients, and I deepened my study in different alternative healing methods such as Gua Sha and other dif-

ferent types of massage. I also studied hypnotherapy and breathing techniques. My goal is to provide this knowledge and share it with everyone. It is a long, rewarding, and enriching experience, that affected me personally in so many ways, it improved me with a great deal of insight into how the mind affects the physical, and I am an advocate for spreading awareness about adopting a healthier lifestyle through adhering to a balanced diet, regular exercise, rest, and positive thinking – the main elements of a human being’s Life Force. How can Body Gua Sha support overall wellness and what should you look for in a therapist? Gua Sha is based on Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Gua means scrape and Sha means sandy. According to the principals of TCM, your energy must circulate throughout your entire being so you can feel your very best. When energy becomes stagnant in certain parts of your system, it is believed that illness may arise. With Gua Sha, a therapist will use a smooth-edged instrument to gently scrape out the area of your skin where there is stagnation of energy. The goal of Gua Sha is to encourage the flow of energy throughout the whole system. By doing Gua Sha, the therapist hopes that any symptoms the patient experiences will diminish, bringing the system back into balance. For the therapists, there are many qualities they must possess before becoming a certified Gua Sha practitioner. Above all else, it is essential to ensure that the therapist is properly qualified and is treating the correct condition for the patient. It is important to be comfortable with your therapist and to trust them to be a good match for your needs. Can you expand on the specific techniques of Gua Sha for the body – is it painful and what happens if there is an energy block? In Gua Sha, a therapist scrapes your body with short or long strokes, stimulating circulation of the soft tissues. They do so with an instrument known as a GuaSha Massager. The therapist applies oil to your body, and then uses the massager to repeatedly scratch your body in a downward/upwards motion. It is generally applied to the back, buttocks, shoulders, arms, and thighs. A gentler version of Gua Sha is also done on the face. The therapist may gently press down, and gradually increase the amount of pressure until you feel comfortable. Gua Sha is meant to address stagnant Qi (pronounced “chee”) in the body that may contribute to inflammation. Inflammation causes discomfort and pain, and is often the root cause of various health problems. Scraping the surface of the body helps to release stagnated Qi, reducing inflammation and promoting overall wellness. The resulting appearance is

not pretty, as you may end up with red marks and bruises as you recover. However, the benefits are significant and some people say it is the best treatment they ever had.

Where do you see the most common blockages in the body and how can we improve this day to day? Due to our daily stress and activity, the brain and the body is often affected. The most common blockages are found in the neck, shoulders, hips, hands and feet, however the three key areas in the body that have the potential to be most affected by emotional stress are the pelvic floor, diaphragm and jaw. To keep stress and its

effects on your body at bay, make time to put your phone down each day, take deep breaths at intervals throughout the day, hydrate, go for walks, and stretch your body.

Have you had any mentors along the way and if so, what knowledge did they impart? Throughout my journey, I had several mentors whom I looked up to, felt comfortable with and trusted to guide me through my personal and professional growth. Mentorship is an excellent way to learn about yourself and how you can better serve others. Having a mentor who cares enough to help you develop your abilities and push you to reach your goals is invaluable. Through mentorship, you’ll find someone who understands what you’re trying to accomplish and will encourage you along the way. You’ll also benefit from having someone who knows you inside out and can provide guidance and advice whenever you need it. What advice would you give to your younger self? I would advise myself to keep an open mind and not get too attached to anything. Don’t let fear stop you from trying something new. If it doesn’t go according to plan, then just pick yourself back up again and start afresh. Stay focused on your strengths and shine where they count. Be proud of who you are and how far you’ve come so far. You’re only limited by your own imagination. This is The Reset Issue – what is the best way to reset? A stressed mind is not at peace and won’t function at its best. Meditation is therefore one of the best things you can do for yourself to reset. It helps you control your emotions, increase your focus, and reduces stress. Even if you meditate for five minutes, studies show it will improve your wellbeing. Additionally, avoid multitasking as this has been proven to increase anxiety and cause changes in the way your brain works, making you less productive, which means you’re not accomplishing anything. Focused concentration helps you get things done faster, reduces anxiety, and allows you to clear your head. Meditation is an excellent tool for learning to concentrate.

Changing the Wellness Landscape

Talk us through your career. My background has been within the wellness space. Before founding The Nue Co. in 2017, I worked in business development for London-based start-up The Detox Kitchen. It was there that I began to develop my knowledge of the wellness industry and also how to build a thriving and successful business. What inspired you to enter the wellness space and launch The Nue Co.? When I was in my mid-twenties, I developed really bad IBS – I ended up being hospitalised a few times, and I was constantly bloated and uncomfortable. I was taking endless supplements to help deal with my bloating and cramps, which actually made them worse, but I didn’t give a second thought about what was actually in them. I researched formulations and ingredients and found as a general rule, 50 per cent of the ingredients in supplements are composed of synthetic fillers, bulking agents, and processed ingredients. I was disillusioned by brands touting misleading messaging, using questionable ingredients, and producing poor-quality products. Inspired by my grandfather, who was a chemist and lecturer at Cambridge

Jules Miller tells us how she’s changing the rhetoric in the wellness space with her brand The Nue Co.

University and would quite often create his own natural supplements, I then set out to create a line of efficacious supplements merging innovative science and nature.

When it comes to the brand, what is your approach to wellness? Our belief as a brand is that health is an ecosystem, comprising your physical, mental, social and environmental wellbeing. Our collective health is intrinsically connected to the health of the planet and we believe it’s our responsibility as a business to raise the bar for our sector by operating in a way that respects and preserves our environment, whilst supporting social sustainability. Sustainability is woven into everything we do as a business, from product development to supplier sourcing and auditing, packaging choices and giving, to operations and logistics. I truly believe that it’s through a holistic approach that we can drive real change and also support educating our customers about the interconnected ecosystem making up their health.

What sets The Nue Co. apart from other wellness brands? We set out with a very simple aim, to change the way people feel about supplements. We always rely on data and science to kick off any sort of new product development. We look to ingredients as close to the food source as possible to deliver a nutrient or a vitamin, whilst focusing on absorption in its format. We also work with clinically proven ingredients and all of our products are free from toxic preservatives, additives, flavourings and sweeteners.

Over the years, what have been the hurdles you’ve experienced when building the brand? Starting and growing your own business will bring challenges on a daily basis. I would say the greatest challenges I have faced have been around balancing advice and having confidence in my decisions as a leader. When I first started I assumed I needed help from people who had more experience and thought they knew more about my ideas and how they should be executed. My advice would be to always go with your gut feeling and do your homework so you can make educated decisions yourself.

Finding the right people has also been incredibly important. We have worked hard to build a strong team, not only internally, but also to find suppliers and partners that share our values as a brand. Without that confidence and trust in the people we work with, the business wouldn’t be able to thrive. And the milestones? I continue to be inspired by the products that we make and the impact that we have on our community; from the reviews from our customers to the feedback we get on social media and pictures they post on Instagram. Within the category specifically, we operate as a brave brand that often breaks down the wellness category norms in

order to be part of conversations that are affecting the health of our community today. Whether that’s mental health or supporting charities across the world like our partner charity: water. I truly believe that our health is intrinsically connected to the health of our community and the planet.

The Nue Co. has become loved by people the globe over. What has your entry into the Middle Eastern market been like? We’ve seen a real engagement with our skin supplements in the market which has been amazing to see. At The Nue Co., we believe in function over cosmetics and address the health of your skin rather than simply short-term appearance, with an aim to give you real skin confidence. Our signature skin supplement Skin Filter is one of our most popular products here, our formula is designed to brighten, tighten, reduce and clear breakouts and blur imperfections. As a new brand, we are

really excited to continue to invest in educating our audience about the long-term benefits of ingestible beauty.

What does the future hold for The Nue Co.? We hope to continue to inspire our community to look at health as a holistic picture. There is no true health without looking after your physical and mental wellbeing, as well as the wellbeing of your environment and the community around you!

Now we’re heading into a new year, what will you be doing to reset your mindset and body for 2023? I’m a great advocate for listening to your body, knowing what it needs and when it needs it. Usually, post festive season that means lots of rest for me and focusing on my health.

My daily non-negotiable is our signature Prebiotic + Probiotic. As someone who suffered from IBS for over five years, I know the difference to your life a product like this can make. It’s a great introduction to supplements and something that everyone should start to incorporate into their routine for long-term gut health. Two capsules a day can help feed the friendly bacteria in your gut and allow them to thrive. I swear by it!

The Real Reset

Dr Maysoon is a master at realignment. We discuss prioritizing a less invasive, more natural approach to dentistry and what it takes to get the ideal result

72 emirateswoman.com BEAUTY

What do you see when most people come to you for a dental reset – the main issue? The main issue tends to be crowding (or crooked teeth). We see a lot of patients wanting to have a straighter and whiter smile, but are unaware of the different options through which this can be achieved.

Why do our teeth move over time and is this genetic? Our features are undoubtedly genetic but there are also additional factors that further affect the position of our teeth. Our teeth continue to move throughout our lives. They are being continually exposed to forces from chewing, biting and grinding. These forces cause wear and tear between the teeth, creating small gaps. The back teeth from both sides then move forwards to close these gaps, causing the front teeth to overlap and crowd. This tends to occur mainly in the lower front teeth. Patients who already have crowded teeth, whether it’s mild or severe, are more likely to notice an increase in crowding with age.

In an industry where more invasive procedures are often pushed, why is it important to assess if this is required and what can be the dangers of heavy teeth preparations? Every treatment has advantages and disadvantages. It’s important for patients to understand clearly what each treatment option entails so that they can make an informed decision. The more we conserve tooth structure that is healthy, the less risk and problems patients will face in the future. There is nothing better in structure than our own natural teeth. Therefore, if there is a treatment that gives us the beautiful aesthetic result that we’re looking for whilst allowing us to conserve our natural tooth structure, then that is by far the preferred option.

How long does it take to reset teeth and what ensures the perfect result? It typically varies from 3 to 12 months, and occasionally more. It all depends on the severity of the crowding to begin with, or the severity of other problems that may be present such as bite issues, gum asymmetry, large spaces between the teeth, patient compliance. We ensure best results by planning each individual case carefully, taking into consideration the patient’s main concerns, aesthetic goals, functional needs and budget. We take detailed records and photos along the way to evaluate the progress and to keep the patient motivated. Can it happen that when teeth are reset, wear and tear is uneven and what can be done about this? Yes, this is a very common occurrence. Most patients who suffer from crowding will also have some degree of wear on the edges of their teeth, particularly so if they have a deep bite or if they grind their teeth. Once the alignment is complete, we can correct the wear on the teeth by building them up with either composite bonding

or minimally prepared porcelain veneers, depending on how severe the wear is. Each option has its pros and cons, which are discussed with the patient in detail to help them decide what’s best for them. Which have been the most popular aesthetic procedures you’ve worked across to date?

The most popular aesthetic procedures nowadays are teeth straightening with clear aligners as well as composite bonding and minimally prepared porcelain veneers. Of course teeth whitening will forever be one of the most popular and sought after treatments, since it’s one of the easiest and quickest ways to enhance a smile. Everybody wants white teeth!

What would be your advice to others wanting to go into the same industry? 1) Know your “why” – why are you entering this field? What makes you look forward to going to work every morning? 2) Be ethical – patients should always come first, and income will then naturally follow. 3) Never stop learning – keeping up to date is absolutely essential in this industry. 4) Enhance your communication skills – healthcare provision is as much about communication as it is about

treatment. There are many clinicians who can perform good quality operative work, but not that many who can communicate so well and make the patient feel at ease and central to the whole process. What drives you when times are tough? Faith, love, a positive mindset and exercise. When you travel, how do you stay consistent in your morning routine and what essentials do you need to take with you? My morning routine is very simple so it can easily be maintained. My essentials include my electric toothbrush, floss, skincare products, my curly hair products and, last but not least, my Ceylon tea! I’m very particular about my tea. This is The Reset Issue – what is the best way to reset? For me, I switch off when I work out or when I’m surrounded by nature, whether it be going for a walk somewhere green, or swimming in the sea. I also find that travelling helps reset and focus my mind as I experience a new environment.

AM TO PM BEAUTY

Marmar AlHilali, lifestyle content creator and interior architect, talks us through her daily beauty routine

Talk us through your morning routine. I start every morning with cold rose water to refresh my skin. Next, I follow with my longtime favourite toner, La Prairie Platinum Rare. It soaks right into the skin and works like magic, giving me instant firmness and glow. For my serum I alternate days between the Chanel Sublimage L’Extract serum, I swear by this serum, and it’s been a go-to of mine for years. A tiny drop goes a long way and leaves my skin undeniably firmer, brighter, and noticeably more youthful. For anyone looking to delay aesthetic procedures, this se-

rum is for you! I switch between the Chanel and the Supreme Maintenance Serum by Dr Sebagh, I always get asked if I’ve had anything done when I use it. My under eyes have always been a problem area, I have genetic dark circles, and struggled for years to find an under-eye product that truly gave results. After my serum, I apply the La Prairie White Caviar Eye Extraordinaire. I never go a day without sunscreen, and my favourite is the HELIOCARE 360 Oil-free sunscreen gel, it has a slight tint to it and feels weightless on my skin. How does your your evening routine dif-

fer? On the days I'm wearing makeup, I always double cleanse before applying my evening routine. I start with a gel cleanser and follow with foam cleanser to remove any excess product. My favourites are Sunday Riley Ceramic Slip, and the Korean brand, Amore Pacific. I apply my La Prairie pre-serum toner again, followed by the Supreme Eye cream and Supreme Face cream by Sisley.

What are your go-to skincare products? My go-to products are Chanel Sublimage Lexctract Serum, CEO Face Cream by Sunday Riley, Dr Sebagh Supreme Maintenance Se-

rum, and the Drunk Elephant Baby Facial. Are you a fan of masks? I’m a die-hard face mask fan, being an Interior Architect definitely keeps my days busy balancing long hours of work, and events. Before any event, I always use 111 Skin Black Diamond Mask and under eye patches. I’m also a firm believer in the power of natural remedies and love giving my skin that extra glow with a DIY honey and turmeric mask. How would you describe your approach to makeup? I have always prioritized my skin and try to avoid wearing makeup daily or wearing it for long hours. When

you get enough sleep and follow the right routine, you can have naturally glowing and radiant skin.

What can always be found in your makeup bag? I’m never without lip balm, lip tint and mini perfume oil.

Let’s talk fragrance. What are you loving at the moment? My current obsession is Rose Omeyyade Des Ors.

How do you choose your evening fragrance? I gravitate towards a patchouli base with floral notes, my current favourite evening fragrance is M.Micallef Gold. Talk us through your hair routine. As some-

one who has to style my hair often, I’ve always used leave-in treatments and regularly get the BB hair treatment to reduce having to constantly heat style my hair. It helps keep my hair voluminous and reduces frizz. My latest discovery is the K18 leave-in treatment, I’m loving using this to repair my hair from the inside out. What is the most unusual item in your makeup bag? I always have a tiny container of matte hair wax to lift and shape my brows. I always say that a perfectly shaped brow and a tinted lip is the perfect way to enhance

I’m excited for a lot of things in 2023. One of my new year’s resolutions is to focus and invest more time in my entrepreneurial journey. Co-Founder & CEO, Apotheca Beauty

In 2023 I’m excited about travelling to Brazil and exploring more of South America. I am determined to start Spanish lessons this year; my mother is Hispanic American, and I have always wanted to learn the language.

I’m also excited for us to open our facial room at Apotheca Beauty in Nakheel Mall, rolling out a comprehensive menu of services across an array of brands, including Omorovicza, Dr. Barbara Sturm, Tatcha, Dr. Lancer, and more.

FAY EZZAT

Content Creator and Designer

I’m working towards a few goals set for 2023, where I aim to grow my clothing brand Ezzat by expanding the team and focusing more on becoming an entrepreneur, aside from staying a designer. I aim to continue my A-game in content creation on Instagram to keep growing my audience. To get to the next level in fashion, I also wish to travel to Asian countries to get inspired by their art, architecture, fashion, and fabric sourcing. In the upcoming

year, I’m confident in the first drop of my label Ezzat and getting ready for the second drop or perhaps a capsule collection.

I also run Fay’s Closet, a preowned clothing store. I’m proud of how far it has come, offering comfort to statement pieces handpicked from around the world. With Ezzat and my many plans for 2023, I’m looking forward to the upcoming year and can’t wait to drop my new collection and grow the brand.

Wellness First

How founder of ZOYA Health & Wellbeing Resort, Ameer Said has created an immersive wellness experience with a holistic approach in the UAE

Talk us through your career. I built my career in corporate business development, working for renowned Saudi companies including Saudi Binladen Group and SOOJ International for Development of Economic Cities. I took everything I built throughout my 30 years of experience and focused it on my passion – health and wellness.

ZOYA Health & Wellbeing Resort is the region’s first fully integrated experience. What inspired you to launch it? After losing my wife and sister to a long battle with cancer and witnessing my mother’s suffering and struggles to perform daily functions in her last years, I recognised the need for prevention over cure. Hence, ZOYA was born out of a determination to address the ailments of the modern world, and to create a special place that protects, nourishes, and invigorates the mind, body, and soul.

The retreat has a 360-degree focus on the body, mind and soul. Why was it important to incorporate all three? The journey towards peace, balance, and rejuvenation comes with focusing on all elements of our being. Unfortunately, we are always more focused on physical health and wellbeing and tend to forget that without a healthy mind and soul, we are not able to transcend into a state of wellness. At ZOYA, we combine unique cutting-edge medical science, physiotherapy, conscious nutrition, and the latest advances in aesthetics to nourish the body and invigorate the mind. Our methods are non-toxic, non-invasive, drug-free, integrative, and holistic – we offer various treatments to create bespoke wellbeing retreat journeys.

Oxygen therapy sessions are growing in popularity – tell us more. Oxygen therapy is an all-natural treatment that facilitates and optimises the oxygen utilisation of cells and tissues. It improves circulation and reduces

heart rate while enhancing physical performance. It also regulates the autonomic nervous system, helps maintain the shorter resting pulse, and aids recovery after exertion by reducing lactic acid build-up. These treatments help with muscle tension, accelerate the healing of wounds and injuries, skin rejuvenation for younger-looking skin, and improve mental wellbeing by boosting relaxation and balance. Our goal is health optimisation; therefore, we offer oxygen therapy sessions as part of all our retreat programmes, where a dedicated team of

medical and wellbeing experts will guide guests and provide them with the bestpersonalized programmes for their healing journey after a detailed health assessment. How does medical wellness seamlessly fit into this wellness retreat? Medical wellness is infused within our guest journey. Guests’ experience at ZOYA starts with a doctor’s consultation, diagnostics, a detailed wellness consultation, and a nutrition plan selection based on each guest’s needs and requirements to ultimately create a personalised weekly programme to achieve optimal levels

of physical and mental wellbeing. We believe that tangible health and wellbeing require knowledge and expertise. At ZOYA, we have a team of professional specialists, from visionaries to doctors, and therapists, who combine their expertise to create individually customized wellbeing plans suitable for everyone.

The resort offers a therapeutic culinary experience – can you elaborate on this? ZOYA offers various holistic therapeutic fasting, calorie control, detox, and vegan meal plans based on proven benefits, that look beyond the body to provide support and everlasting benefits for the mind and spirit. We only use organic, fresh, and seasonal ingredients at our wellness restaurant and juice bar, where we have adopted a strict clean food policy that turns superb ingredients into therapeutic meals and fine-dining experiences.

For those planning their first-ever wellness retreat, what tips would you recommend to prepare for the experience? Come with trust and an open mind. Our goal is to ensure that our guests leave our resort relaxed, balanced, and rejuvenated with the expert guidance of our health professionals. We have designed our retreat programmes to aid guests in protecting, nourishing, and invigorating their minds, bodies, and souls. While a one-time visit will definitely help, we do recommend that our guests make a habit of wellness visits in order to commit

to their wellbeing and transform their lives. How has COVID-19 affected the wellness industry on a larger scale? Following the COVID-19 pandemic, overall patterns have changed significantly, bringing health and wellness to the majority of people’s top of

and holistic approach to mind and body rejuvenation, offering only the best retreat programmes curated by experts and professionals in the field with a proven track record.

Has the need for wellbeing retreats grown in the Middle East in the last few years? Most definitely, the wellbeing retreats was definitely pushed even further following the effects of the pandemic. From launching ZOYA earlier this year, we have seen a huge demand from the GCC and wider Middle East to experience our offering and begin regularly investing in improving their physical and mental health and wellbeing. We are anticipating continued growth and traction both from the regional and international markets.

minds, regardless of their health conditions. This has resulted in the need to maintain physical and mental wellbeing, driving people to seek holistic approaches to health, which in turn will only continue to boost the global wellness tourism market. With that being said, the wellness industry is vast, consisting of quite diverse offerings, from spiritual to physical practices to improve overall health and wellbeing. It was important for our resort to position itself as a leader in the wellness space in the region to offer a unique

This is The Reset Issue – what’s your advice for our readers to reset in 2023? As the region’s first fully integrated wellness experience, we urge everyone reading to try and always place physical and mental health and wellbeing at the top of their minds to invest in their health. With our busy schedules and unhealthy routines and habits, our health is often disregarded and neglected. At ZOYA, we put a huge focus on prevention over the cure to avoid the need for medication and assistance throughout varying stages of life, and we hope that we are able to successfully create a space that inspires continuous exploration of self and promotes a wellnessled lifestyle for all ages.

The Space Reset

Salam Shaban, professional Dubai-based organizer and founder of Tidymess, discusses how you can reset your space for a successful 2023

82 emirateswoman.com LIFESTYLE IMAGES: GETTY AND SUPPLIED
WORDS:OLIVIA MORRIS

What inspired you to enter the organizational space? I always loved organizing, so it was something I was eager to learn more about. After seeing the amazing work of Marie Kondo I felt inspired to pursue it more seriously. Once I created a system that worked so well for myself and my family, I felt it was important to share it with others.

You launched Tidymess a few years back. What was the initial response to the concept? At the time, it was a very new concept. I found myself having to explain it to most people I knew. Once people started to see my work they thought it was a great idea and encouraged me to pursue it.

How have things evolved since you launched? I’ve been so lucky to have received such a phenomenal response from my clients and social media. This has really helped me grow my business. Every day people hire me and my team to help organize their spaces. We immerse ourselves in their homes and move through their spaces tailoring a highly-functional system. In the beginning, it was difficult to take on large projects, but as my team grew, we are now capable of really helping our clients organize as many spaces in their homes as they need.

For those who are having a refresh for a new year, what are your top tips to start organizing your space and life? Before buying anything new, take a minute or two to think about where it is going to live in your home and life. Think about how long you will need this item and what will happen to it in the future when you no longer do. If it is something that you feel will add no real value to your space, then you most probably don’t need it. A particular place where clutter can build is your wardrobe. What is the best way to approach decluttering this space? Ask yourselves questions such as: When was the last time you wore it?; Is it in good condition?; Does it have sentimental value?; Have you worn it in the past year?; Does it fit you properly? Your answers will help you decide whether you want to keep, donate or store away your item.

Over the years, what have been the hurdles you’ve experienced when building the Tidymess concept? Starting any business from scratch is a challenge. In my case, I was starting a business from scratch about a new concept that few people had heard of. I would say bringing my vision to life was a great challenge because it took a while for people to realize the necessity of adopting a new lifestyle for their homes as opposed to seeing my work as simply “cleaning up” the house. What have been the key milestones? I would say my first milestone was when I was able to bring in a team to help me serve my clients better. Building a team gave me a sense of accomplishment that something I had

started on my own was now growing into something more. My second milestone was after having my third child and realizing that I did not need to stop working. It took a lot of mental and emotional energy to see that it was okay for me to keep doing what I loved. Once I started taking on new projects again, I was so proud of myself and happy that I had not just let it go because of my new responsibilities and busy life.

What does the future hold for Tidymess? Continue to grow and reach more people. Everyone can be a part of this concept. Whether they want to hire our services, buy our favourite products online or simply gain a few ideas from our social media page. I hope my team and I can help more people organize their spaces and love their homes. What will you be doing to reset your mindset and body for 2023? Keep finding that balance. As a mum of three and founder of a femaleowned business, I find myself wearing many hats at once and that can quickly become overwhelming. I just need to keep finding that balance between my home life, work life and also those moments that are just for me.

How long have you worked on this space? My sisters and I have worked on this space for a year and a half starting April 2021. We later opened in July 2022. Did you have a clear concept from the outset, and which key pieces are your favourite? Yes, we’ve always wanted to create a spa-like feel. When clients enter, we want them to feel luxurious coming in yet at the same time feel at home. My favourite key pieces would be our Society Dome and the Arched Mirror in The Hair Club.

Have you custom-built any bespoke pieces? Everything in the salon is custom built, most of which was designed by Achromatic Design Studios.

How do you think your interior reflects you/your brand? I have an eye for the timeless qualities that make up a piece whether it be in fashion or furniture. The Beauty Society reflects this same quality in its interior. Describe your taste in three words. Timeless, luxurious and sophisticated.

Maybe they're right Since the early 20th Century, Rolex has designed and crafted watches suited for all women's wrists, with the same standard ofexcellence as for all the models that have built its legend. Always pursuing a higher standard. So, if"classic" means perpetuating tradition while combining elegance and precision, grace and resistance, beauty and performance, it is indeed a classic timepiece, designed for a lady. The Lady-Datejust.
