President’s Welcome Message

My fellow MPSE members and sound community:

No more apologies for virtual shows, we are back in PERSON!!!

Not only are we all here, but this is our 70th annual awards!

This year, we are in the beautiful Wilshire Ebell Theatre of Los Angeles.

Our annual awards show is a celebration of the incredible work of our sound editors, who play a crucial role in bringing films, television shows, and games to life. As you all know, sound is one of the most powerful elements of any production, and it is the sound editors who create the aural tapestry that immerses us in the story and brings it to life.

This year, we have seen some truly incredible sound editing. From the explosive action of blockbusters to the subtle nuances of character-driven dramas, sound editors have shown the power of sound to engage, entertain, and move us.

As our industry continues to evolve and grow, it is more important than ever that we recognize and celebrate the work of our sound editors. They are unsung heroes. It is their creativity, skill, and dedication that bring our productions to life.

Our Career Achievement Award will be presented to Gwendolyn Yates Whittle, a three-time Oscar nominee for Avatar, Tron Legacy, and currently nominated for Avatar: The Way of Water. She has won six Golden Reels and earned 21 career nominations from 1998-2023. The care and detail that Gwen displays in all her work is evident. She is an inspiration to sound editors around the globe and we can’t wait to hear her fu turc projects.

Our Filmmaker of the Year Award will go to award-winning producer Jerry Bruckheimer. Jerry has been at the forefront of action movies in Hollywood for decades. His film career started with American Gigolo and Flashdance, and has gone on to blockbuster films such as Pirates of the Caribbean, Bad Boys, Armageddon, Beverly Hills Cop, and of course, Top Gun. His influence in the television world has been no less spectacular with hits like CSI: Crime Scene Inrestigation, CSI: Cyber, The Amazing Race, Training Day, Lucifer, and many more. He is responsible for many of our favorite films and movie quotes and is currently an Oscar nominee for Top Gun: Maverick.

Tonight’s amazing host is Patton Oswalt, I am sure he wi11 make it a memorable event.

Thank you to our members and judges who gave their time, ears, and years of sound experience to select tonight’s winners.

I would like to give a huge thank you to our outgoing Vice President, Steve Urban, for all he has done for this organization. Please welcome David Barber as our new Vice President. We look forward to your input and leadership to help guide us into the future.

Our outgoing Treasurer, Jeremy Gordon, and outgoing Sergeant-at-Arms, Chris Reeves, will be succeeded by new Treasurer Chris Reeves, and new Sergeant-at-Arms Solange Schwalbe.

New and reelected Board of Director members are Peter Albrechtsen, Miguel Araujo, Mark Carnperell, William Dannevik, Brent Findley, Amber Funk, Scott Jennings, Robert Kellough, Perry La Marca, Charles Maynes, Garrett Montgomery, and Paulette Victor Lifton. Thank you for representing your fellow editors and continuing to move the MPSE and its mission forward.

A BIG thank you to editor Christina Horgan for our quarterly magazine, MPSE Wavelength, now in its third year. She, like everyone on the Board, is a volunteer and she donates a lot of time to the magazine.

Thanks to our publicist Linda Rosner for keeping us on track through the awards season and keeping the MPSE’s name in the forefront. Thank you to our video editor Hedio Lobo.

MM: This project was unique. It was just one other editor and I and then I mixed it myself. So I suppose, as a mixer, I had a deep understanding of what I, as an editor, intended.

MPSE: Was there anything specific that influenced your decision to take on this project?

Kevin Senzaki MPSE, CoAudio Director: The people. One of director Sam Barlow’s previous games, “Silent Hill: Shattered Memories,” is one of my favorite works in any medium. When producer Shyam Sengupta, whom I always love working with, invited me to join the project, it was an immediate “yes.”

MPSE: What was the biggest challenge you and your team faced?

KS: Working under Covid Lockdown conditions.

editing and mixing. Do you find this allows for better collaboration?

KS: Through improving technology there is more overlap between editing and mixing which can help in a multitude of ways, especially in tight schedules but I still believe that the collaboration benefits by having a fresh input from a mixer at the end of the process.

MPSE: Where are you based and is your team in the same location?

KS: I am based at Soundbyte Studios in West London, UK.

MPSE: If you could pick only one piece of advice for the next generation of sound editors what would it be?

KS: My advice for the next generation of sound editors is to listen carefully to the film makers requests.

AL: Yeah, the re-recording mixers and I collaborated a lot on this show and it was great.

MPSE: Where are you based and is your team in the same location?

AL: 4. I’m in LA and the composers I work with are also in LA.

Andres Locsey MPSE, Music Editor: I really like working with my friends the composers Zach Robinson and Leo Birenberg. When they told me they were gonna work on a Pitch Perfect TV show I was super excited to join them.

MPSE: What was the biggest challenge you and your team faced?

AL: Since this show has so many on-screen vocal performances I had to do lots of work including tuning on-screen vocals, timing the singing to picture, timing musical instruments to onscreen performances, lots of melodyne, and pitch n time. I even went to ADR sessions with the cast to supervise the recording of their singing and coach them. The sound supervisors and I collaborated a ton on this show to make dialogue and singing flow seamlessly.

MPSE: If you could pick only one piece of advice for the next generation of sound editors what would it be?

AL: Approach every music edit as if it’s going to be played loud and solo on screen.

S”M”G: Wrangling a very cacophonous series into a listenable mix while maintaining the energy and spark of the show.

MPSE: There is more and more overlap between editing and mixing. Do you find this allows for better collaboration?

S”M”G: Yes, certainly being that I was also the mixer. While I didn’t have hands on cutting, the line is certianly blurring. Clients for sure don’t want to think about the difference.

MPSE: Was there anything specific that influenced your decision to take on this project?

Lee Walpole MPSE, Supervising Sound Editor: I have been with the show since

the first episode. I had done a number of shows previously both with the production company behind The Crown Leftbank Pictures and also Philip Martin who was lead Director on Season 1.

MPSE: What was the biggest challenge you and your team faced?

LW: We work incredibly hard on this show to create a consistent, rich, close and intimate Dialogue track, where you can hear the nuances of each voice and really feel the sharp, precise enunciation of our Actors.

The show is fairly challenging to record, with wide shots and moving cameras frequently utilised to present the splendid locations and the meticulous costumes can present their own challenges when it comes to clip mic placement.

A lot of judicious work goes into cleaning the production sound, always being incredibly mindful of going as gently and cautiously as possible to avoid any loss or detrimental artefacts to the voices.

MPSE: There is more and more overlap between editing and mixing. Do you find this allows for better collaboration?

LW: I do. A lot of great legwork can now be done in advance of the sessions hitting the mix stage.

It is becoming easier to present your track with a whole bunch of decisions mapped out and implemented in advance, to ensure the mixer can get the best out of the tracks in the mix.

I have actually been Mixing the Effects on all projects I work on for the last 8 years. I love this dual role.

MPSE: Where are you based and is your team in the same location?

LW: I am based in the UK. All of my crew are within commutable distance of London other than Saoirse Christopherson who works on the FX on all my shows. She is now based in Canada and we frequently find that the time difference works to our advantage with her day starting when my day ends. She is able to update sound for late VFX or creates fixes for the Mix Stage whilst I sleep.

MPSE: If you could pick only one piece of advice for the next generation of sound editors what would it be?

LW: You never stop learning in this job, Be open to that and be a sponge!

MPSE: Was there anything specific that influenced your decision to take on this project?

AN: We wanted the viewer / audience to experience the sounds of fighter jets as authentically as possible. Translating that from real world to screen took many many days and a lot of dedication.

JM: Working under Covid Lockdown conditions

MPSE: There is more and more overlap between

mixing which can help in a multitude of ways, especially in tight schedules but I still believe that the collaboration benefits by having a fresh input from a mixer at the end of the process.

MPSE: Where are you based and is your team in the same location?

AN: Skywalker Sound in Northern California. For the most part, yes.

JM: I am based at Soundbyte Studios in West London, UK.

MPSE: If you could pick only one piece of advice for the next generation of sound editors what would it be?

AN: Sound editing has many technical requirements but it is not a technical position. It is a creative position requiring interpretation of story through sound. Watch good films with good sound first.

James Mather, Supervising Sound Editor: My decision to undertake this project was influenced by my desire to produce an iconic sound track for an iconic movie.

MPSE: What was the biggest challenge you and your team faced?

editing and mixing. Do you find this allows for better collaboration?

AN: Whenever the filmmakers and sound team (editorial and mix) have the opportunity to collaborate, it makes for a better film. Temp mixes, reviews with mixers present and time spent listening to the track with the filmmakers is invaluable.

JM: Through improving technology there is more overlap between editing and
