LETTER FROM THE CEO As 2020 comes to a close, it is my hope, that most of us dive into 2021 with a head full of hope and a heart full of love.

There is no doubt that 2020 was a divisive year. From graduations to weddings to family celebrations and finish lines, we all missed rights of passage that brought us together.

But through this struggle, we gained new ways to find connection.

Some of us invented fun traditions at the dinner table, sharing a meal with those we love. And others learned to bake bread (lots of bread) to share with our neighbors. We learned to socially distance while still remaining connected (thank you Zoom).

Holidays too – holidays will be a little different this year. Through this Pandemic, Mother’s has been here to serve your health and wellness and your family. The holidays are no different. AMERICAN THANKSGIVING Three Historical Harvest Holidays That Led To American Thanksgiving

As we prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving this year, you may be pondering what sort of foods to prepare.

American Thanksgiving has its traditional staples, such as potatoes, turkey, and cornbread, but what some may not know is that these dishes have roots tied to the first Thanksgiving.

The first Thanksgiving menu was composed of all-natural, completely organic foods! The turkeys they ate were local, the corn was homegrown, and everything was fresh. You can get back to the heart of this historical feast by getting your all-natural ingredients and dishes from Mother’s Market. This way, you can bring the true spirit of a harvest festival to your home table. However, did you know that Thanksgiving has its roots in a long line of historical autumn festivals? These festivals, such as Michaelmas, Erntedank, and Mabon for example, all typically take place earlier than American Thanksgiving.

Doubling as a celebration of the end of summer, they are observed between the end of August and

the end of October, some of them lasting weeks or even months. So, what sorts of foods did people eat during these holidays?

Michaelmas, or Saint Michael’s Mass, was a holiday that began around the 5th century in Europe, gaining most of its prominence in England. It takes place on September 29th, near the Autumn equinox, so Michaelmas was believed to encourage protection from dark forces as the nights grew longer and colder. To celebrate the holiday, people ate staples such as potatoes and goose, to bring financial prosperity. Scottish people would bake a scone-like cake called St Michael’s Bannock, or Struan Micheil, which was made out of cereals such as oats or barley, and moistened with sheep's milk.

People also ate blackberries, since Michaelmas was considered to be the last day one could pick them.

Erntedank is a holiday in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland that is less celebrated today, but has a long and rich history. It has no official date, since it seems to vary by location.

The holiday begins with a church service, then flows into a parade where a giant crown made out of wheat called the Erntekrone is presented to that year’s “harvest queen” (who gets a much smaller crown). Then there is music, dancing, and food.

Like many other harvest celebrations, on Erntedank, people eat things like locally harvested produce, bread made from local wheat, and honey. Coming full circle in a chain of influence, turkey had become an incredibly popular staple for Erntedankfest, borrowed from American Thanksgiving. In Paganism, people celebrate a holiday called Mabon, which is a harvest celebration of thanks.

Feasting is a big part of Mabon, where people eat symbolic foods such as apples, nuts and seeds, gourds, and squashes. Wine was another staple of the festivities. Early agricultural societies understood very well how important it was to have a good relationship with your community, so Mabon feasts would often be massive group events. Not only would people eat symbolic foods, but the foods would also be used to decorate homes and altars, a true reflection of how bountiful the harvest hopefully was. Though not all European harvest holidays come directly from Mabon, most of them have direct roots in ancient Pagan cultures.

Together, these holidays set the stage for the first Thanksgiving. Originally, American Thanksgiving

landed around October 3rd, which makes more sense for a harvest festival. The modern Thanksgiving holiday wasn’t truly resurrected until the mid-1800’s, when people began celebrating it on the 4th Thursday of November. So what do historians believe people ate at the early American Thanksgiving feasts? Corn-based foods and turkeys were there, of course, but it’s also likely that people ate local offerings such as lobster, eels, duck, and venison. The menu evolved in the Victorian era with the help of Sarah Josepha Hale, the editor of a popular magazine called Godey’s Lady's Book.

It was actually Hale herself who petitioned multiple presidents to make Thanksgiving a holiday. She was a prominent writer who spent a lot of her time advocating for women’s education. Fun fact: She also wrote the nursery rhyme “Mary Had a Little Lamb.” Having grown up celebrating an unofficial New England form of the Thanksgiving holiday, Hale lobbied for years to make it a national holiday in order to ease tensions in the country following the Civil War. Finally, in 1863, Abraham Lincoln agreed to it. Hale published numerous Thanksgiving recipes in Godey’s Lady's Book, which were picked up and made tradition by housewives around the country. We’ve had an official, Americanized harvest holiday ever since.

On this year’s Thanksgiving, you might want to add a historical spin to your menu. Here’s a recipe you can try your hand at using all natural and organic ingredients easily picked up at Mother’s Market. After all, cooking with natural, in-season, and local ingredients was the whole point of every harvest holiday! Tasty Tip: This recipe can easily be made vegan by replacing the milk with almond milk, and by using vegan egg replacers and vegan butter.

INGREDIENTS: • 1 cups each Barley, oat, and rye meal •1 cup flour • teaspoon salt • 2 teaspoons baking soda • 2 –3 cups buttermilk (or add a 3 tablespoons lemon juice to 3 cups of plant-based milk, let sit 5-10 minutes until thickened) • 3 tablespoons honey, molasses, or brown sugar • 2 eggs or the equivalent egg replacer • 1 cup cream (or your favorite plant-based cream) • 4 tablespoons regular or vegan butter • Optional: cup raisins, blackberries, currants, and 1-2 tablespoons caraway seeds

DIRECTIONS: Mix barley, oat, and rye meal in a bowl with flour and salt. Stir baking soda into 2 cups buttermilk or vegan substitute, and add to flour mixture. Add honey. Add the optional add-ins now if you wish.

Turn out onto a well-floured board and knead until dough is soft, adding more flour or buttermilk as necessary. Divide dough in half, then roll out into a circle on floured parchment paper until 8-9 inche in diameter and inch thick. Repeat with the other half.

Mix the eggs or replacer, cream or plant cream, and the melted butter or vegan butter. Heat a griddle and lightly grease it. Paint one surface of the bannock dough with the egg mixture. Then, remove it from parchment paper and place that surface down on the griddle. Cook over medium heat until light brown on the underside. While it cooks, paint the upper side with the egg mixture, then flip when ready. Paint the new top side again, then flip and repeat until each side has been painted and cooked 3 times.

Serve warm with butter or honey.

The great news is, with every year there are more and more fantastic vegan substitution products and ingredients, making it easy for you and your family to make completely plant-based holiday recipes. Here’s a simple guide to help you navigate your vegan menu conversions this Thanksgiving.

Cheese Vegan cheese has struggled to find its way in the past, but these days there are plenty of quality and delicious brands that you can use in any recipe. One of the best in the business is Daiya. They sell a wide assortment of vegan cheeses, from cheddar slices to mozzarella shreds. Another vegan cheese giant is Miyoko’s, which sells highly realistic looking rounds of vegan mozzarella and other cheeses. Kite Hill sells a cashew-based vegan ricotta cheese, perfect for whipping up lasagna on a cold night.

Meat Never before have vegan meats tasted so much like… well, meat! In the last few years, great new staples such as Impossible and Beyond Meat have brought highly realistic vegan ground beef to stores near you, including Mother’s Market & Kitchen! Eggs In most baked goods, eggs serve the purpose of being a binding agent. You can often replace them with other ingredients entirely, such as extra soft tofu or applesauce. Another tried and true trick that may work better in savory dishes, is using aquafaba. This is the liquid that comes in canned chickpeas. You can use aquafaba in dessert items like whipped cream or meringue, but make sure that the can of chickpeas you buy has no added salt. If you’d rather use a direct vegan egg replacer, the good news is there are plenty of those too!

Butter Another product that Miyoko’s has mastered is vegan butter. They even sell European Style Cultured Vegan Butter. And of course, long-time vegan butter brand Earth Balance still makes amazing products that are perfect for baking, cooking, or spreading.

Milk This is one of the easiest things to substitute.

The trick is figuring out what kind of plant milk works best for what dish. For many savory dishes, soy milk, oat milk and even cashew milk are great replacements because their neutral flavor and thick texture can resemble the fat of cream. 1. Virtual Cookie Decorating Competition Who ever said cookie decorating is exclusive to December? This is an easy activity you can do with family through your video-chat app of choice.

Go out and buy or bake some sugar cookies. Decorate them with frosting, icing designs, sprinkles, and other creative toppings. Then, show them off to see who is the best artist in the family.

2. Thanksgiving Card Exchange Much like a Secret Santa, you can assign each person in the group to another, and have everyone make and decorate a card for that person.

Fill the card with expressions of thankfulness and things you love about that person, mail them out, and then open and read them during you video chat!

3. Harvest Scavenger Hunt If your family has a lot of kids, this one would be especially fun for them.

Create a list of Thanksgiving items, such as small pumpkins, gourds, printed pictures of turkeys, etc. Hide them around your house and send the kids off on a hunt with a list of mysterious clues. When each team returns with their items, they get a prize.

4. Recipe Swap Create a family cookbook by having everyone write down and pitch in a recipe. This is a good way to get kids into some inventive thinking.

Once everyone has pitched in a recipe, you can then combine th recipes in a book or binder to use next year and for years to come.

5. Hand Turkey Art Gallery Have everyone draw and color their own hand turkey. The challenge is to make your turkey look as fun and creative as possible. CLASSIC HOT TODDY Every holiday get-together needs some kind of festive drink! Mulled wine, spiced cider, and hot buttered rum all come to mind as seasonal favorites, but you may have had a Hot Toddy or two in the past as well. Whether you love the warmth of this boozy drink during the cold winter nights, or have been unlucky enough to catch a cold during the holiday season, the winter blues have nothing against the power of a good traditional Hot Toddy.

A typical Hot Toddy is a mixture of liquor, usually whiskey, hot water, and honey or sugar. Sometimes spices such as cloves and cinnamon are added. This form of the “toddy” dates back as early as 1786. There can even be a Cold Toddy, which usually has more orange, lemon, and Earl Grey tea added and stirred with ice. So whether you’re feeling under the weather or want to serve up a cup of comfort to your loved ones this holiday season, the Hot Toddy is a great drink to try.

INGREDIENTS

DIRECTION

• 2 tbsp Scotch whiskey • ⅓-⅔ cup hot water depending on your taste

Makes 1 hot toddy.

2 tsp lemon juice 1 slice of lemon 1 cinnamon stick 1 tbsp honey Cloves

Add the whiskey and honey to a mug or handled glass. Pour in the hot water.

Add the cloves and lemon juice and stir well. Then, add in the cinnamon stick and a lemon slice. Enjoy!

FESTIVE INFUSED WATER One of the easiest drink recipes you can try out this holiday season is getting creative with some infused water. Not only is infused water a great way to stay hydrated and health conscious, but it’s also perfect for getting festive in unique ways. It’s all too easy to become dehydrated during these busy months, and maybe you’re trying to steer clear of the more sugary holiday drinks in favor of something more body-friendly.

If water alone isn’t enough to get you in the holiday mood, try some seasonal infused water! Infused water can be made up of any number of combinations of produce and herbs, so here’s 3 combination ideas for using seasonal winter produce to jazz up your infused water.

FOR ALL RECIPES, USE 8 CUPS OF WATER Cranberry and mint • 2 cups whole fresh organic cranberries, washed • 2-3 sprigs organic mint

Pomegranate, apple and sage • ¾-1 cup organic pomegranate seeds • 2 organic apples, sliced • 1 tbsp organic sage leaves

Pear, orange and cinnamon • 2 organic pears, sliced • 1 organic orange, sliced in rounds, seeds removed

• 2-3 cinnamon sticks

Once ingredients are added to the water, stir and chill with ice. Allow the infused water to sit for at least 30 minutes. The longer it sits, the better it tastes. Enjoy!

While sweetened yams have been around as a dish since the 16th century, it wasn’t until the late 1800’s that they became an all-American seasonal staple.Sweet Mashed Yams make a perfect accompaniment to mashed

potatoes, or can even steal the show by themselves.

We figured out the best way to make it vegan, and it’s easy to make, too! Serve up this holiday favorite by trying out our original recipe crafted by our Executive Chef at Mother’s Market.

INGREDIENTS

• 1 lb mashed yams

Makes 2 Servings.

• .5 ounce coconut milk • 6 ounces of vegan butter • .5 ounce of brown sugar • 1/16 teaspoon of cinnamon

Peel, steam, and mash the yams. Place the yams and all other ingredients in a mixer and mix on medium speed for about 3 minutes until incorporated. Scrape down the sides to ensure there are no lumps and all ingredients have been mixed evenly.

Then mix again on medium-hi for 3 more minutes until smooth and fluffy.
