Moving Forward and Looking Back

T

his 100th year celebration of Mother of Mercy High School is really ramping up now! A complete restoration of our beautiful front entrance is nearly finished; and beyond its doors, flanking the ascending marble steps and stately stained glass, is a brand new Heritage Hall, boasting images and relics of Mercy’s first 100 years. Currently, we are putting final plans in place for an amazing Mercy birthday party on September 19 (see your invitation details on the back cover), Bishop Binzer has agreed to be our centennial Mass Officiant and alumna and professional artist, Holly Schapker ‘88, is finishing a centennial rendering to be revealed on Mercy Day. These are only some of the ways we continue to celebrate the 100 year legacy of Mother of Mercy High School.

One of the greatest ways we can pay tribute to our past is to ensure a strong future for Mercy. This past spring our Mercy Education Collaborative of Cincinnati (MECC) Leadership Team began strategic visioning with faculty and staff members of both Mercy and McAuley High Schools. Our goal is to identify and develop strategic collaborations that bring unequivocal “value-add” initiatives to these already strong performing schools, and our work thus far has been inspirational.

Soon into this new school year, we will announce to our community a Vision unlike any 2

other school in the tri-state area; a Vision that will make our entire community of Mercy very proud and our future, most certain.

When any one of us drives a vehicle, we look through an expansive stretch of unobstructed glass. Naturally, a windshield’s design is intentionally broad so that our biggest viewing area is centered on where we are headed. Can you even imagine having to take a journey with only a “porthole” scope of the road? What a disabling, and even dangerous perspective that would be. In shaping our Vision for Mercy, it has been important for us to continually look at the whole picture. Posing both challenges and opportunities, there are changes that significantly impact our planning – changes in education, technology, demographics, household incomes, etc.

Our diligent and careful approach is helping define a plan that is not only responsive to current needs, but also anticipative of the future.

Built into our “windshield” view of the road ahead is also a rear-view mirror to remind us where we have been. In much the same way, that our past is still seen as part of our future, we take with us the rich history that defines Mother of Mercy today.

And at the start of it all was Catherine McAuley, who knew that Girls. Matter. Too. She created a mission and inspired a calling to empower women with values of Mercy. The mission is now ours to carry forward. Let us show the young women of Mercy just how very much they do matter.

Mercy, McAuley Vocalists Sing with Amy Grant Vocalists from Mercy and McAuley High Schools were given a rare and unique opportunity to perform with Grammy-winning Christian artist Amy Grant. Grant was in town to perform for a private Mercy Health event Downtown, and because of the schools’ growing partnership with Mercy organizations in Cincinnati through the Mercy Education Collaborative of Cincinnati (MECC), the two groups of students were invited to take part.

Grant spent almost an hour rehearsing with the students before the concert, during which she gave them some tips and tricks. It was a virtual master class for the young singers, led by an acclaimed musician. The students said she was generous with her time, very friendly, and even asked each student her name before beginning rehearsal.

During the course of that rehearsal, the students told Grant they often sing her Christmas classic “Breath of Heaven” during the holidays. Even though she said she hadn’t sung it for years and did not plan on including it in the performance that night, Grant listened to their version, jumped right in to create an impromptu arrangement, and added it to the night’s lineup.

“I am delighted that our growing MECC partnership with Mercy Health is providing such tremendous opportunities as this for our two high schools,” said MECC President Kirsten MacDougal. “We will continue to build our relationship as MECC schools, both with one another and with our hospital. The reciprocal benefits to all, and the possibilities for our work together, are endless.”

The students said singing with Amy Grant was an amazing and unforgettable experience.

“It was evident that she was just as excited to sing with us as we were to sing with her. I was very nervous to meet her because I had no idea what she would be like, but in all honesty, it felt as if we all had known her for a long time.”

Initiative Combats Misconceptions After Mercy’s participation in an Interfaith Day of Service, where groups of students from three faith traditions worked together toward a common goal, I had the pleasure of writing an Opinion Editorial for The Cincinnati Enquirer, which we have reprinted here in part. The day of service was funded by a grant from The Interfaith Initiative in celebration of the fiftieth anniversary of Nostra Aetate, a seminal Catholic document proclaiming the importance of cooperation among people of different faiths for the betterment of society.

T

he vision behind the groundbreaking service project was simple: Build bridges. Create levels of understanding. Ease divisiveness.

Teenagers from Mother of Mercy High School, the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati and the Mayerson Jewish Community Center came together – in location, in spirit and in cooperation – to help build a butterfly garden at the Imago Earth Center in Price Hill. The timing and aim of the project were intentional. It was scheduled around Earth Day and encouraged students to quite literally feel the earth between their fingers and toes. This experience served as a reminder of our commonality – that we all cherish the earth as a beautiful object of creation – and an entree into a larger conversation about working alongside each other despite our differences.

Our intention was bolstered by the words of Pope Francis this Earth Day, who called us to “see the world through the eyes of God the Creator.” He said, “The earth is an environment to be safeguarded, a garden to be cultivated.” That garden for us was the Imago Earth Center, a beautiful backdrop for the students not only to meet and interact with each other but to make a real impact on the world they all share.

Mother of Mercy, the Islamic Center and Mayerson JCC all had the desire to provide enrichment for our students. This triad has blossomed into a beautiful collaboration, aimed at building understanding where there is sometimes divisiveness. It is a partnership that supports our mission by helping our students grow in the core Mercy values of compassion and service and is in alignment with the teaching of Pope Francis: “We are called to respect the religion of the other, its teachings, its symbols, its values. We have to bring up young people to think and speak respectfully of other religions and their followers.”

This tri-faith service project was not the first endeavor for Mercy and its students.

The school has a long-standing relationship with the Mayerson JCC. Young adults from Israel have been coming to Mercy for more than ten years as part of the Chaverim M’Israel (Friends of Israel) program of the Jewish Federation of Cincinnati. During their year in the United States, young Israelis have shared their culture, faith, food and customs with Mercy students.

In addition, Mercy has been part of interfaith work and understanding with the Sunday School program at the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati for more than two years. During those interactions, students learned about each other’s faith, helped clear misconceptions and most importantly realized how much they had in common.

C ampus L ife Catherine McAuley Award

Valedictorian & Salutatorian

The highest award that Mercy bestows is the Catherine McAuley Award. Named for the founder of the Sisters of Mercy, the award is given to a senior student who exhibits the Mercy values - Faith, Service, Compassion, Excellence and Leadership - both inside and outside of school. Students are nominated by the faculty and their peers. The award is a great honor. This year’s recipient is Rachel Leonhardt. Nominees included Danielle Diersing, Sarah Doren, Olivia Hart and Nancy Nzobigeza. Rachel was coordinator of the Prayer & Justice Team and Student Council Senior Co-Chair. She is attending the University of Cincinnati and studying Biomedical Engineering.

Madeline Spetz and Rebecca Rhein finished at the top of their class in 2015 and were honored as valedictorian and salutatorian at graduation.

Maddie is from Westwood. While at Mercy, she ran cross country, was on the Mock Trial team and was involved in Student Recruiting Committee, INTERalliance and Youth Court.

She said she was fortunate to have teachers who treated her like an adult and never hesitated to teach her something, even if it was complicated or mature. Maddie is studying Biomedical Engineering at the University of South Carolina.

Lisa Moore Award Another top honor, the Lisa Moore Award, named in honor of the late Lisa Moore ‘77, recognizes a senior athlete who has demonstrated her spirit, leadership and dedication to her team and the Mercy community over the past four years. The 2015 Lisa Moore Award was given to Emma Bley. Emma was a 4-year volleyball and basketball player and member of GAA. She also ran track & field for 2 years. Emma is attending the Univerisity of Dayton and studying Marketing.

Becca is from Bridgetown. While at Mercy, she played soccer, was on the Mock Trial team and was on the Campus Ministry board. She was also very involved in Student Recruiting Committee, Student Council and Freshman Focus. She said the biggest challenge of her high school career was balancing extra curricular activities with school work. Becca is studying Pre-Med at the University of Dayton.

President’s Volunteer Service Award Senior Hannah Kemble earned the Gold Level of the President’s Volunteer Service Award last spring. The award recognizes individuals who are inspired to take action that changes the world. Hannah completed more than 250 service hours (in fact she completed 288!) in a 12-month period. Eighteen other Mercy students were honored at the bronze and silver levels for their service hours last year.

Returning the Favor those they had lost and to share their feelings.

Logan said at just nine years old, she didn’t realize what a difference it made at the time, but she was glad to get to know other children who were going through the same thing.

She didn’t think much about Fernside until recently.

A speaker came to her Hope & Healing class this year to talk about the program as a means for recovery. Logan remembered it was this same organization that helped her in a time of need. She was so moved by the presentation, she introduced herself to the speaker and offered to volunteer.

“I could see how they are helping so many children, and I realized how much they helped me at the time,” Logan said.

S

he was helped after tragedy struck her life, and recently, Logan Davis ‘16 decided to return the favor. Logan’s father, John Davis, died suddenly in 2008 when she was just nine years old. Logan says her dad was funny, goofy and full of energy. She remembers him taking her to basketball games and always being there for her. She was just a fourth grader at St. Aloysius in Bridgetown, and although John had another daughter from a previous marriage, she was much older, and Logan was the only child living at home. Logan’s mom, Kathleen, turned to Fernside for help. The organization works with children who are dealing with grief.

As a child, Logan worked with the Fernside volunteers for several months. Through art projects and discussion, she and other “Because I have experienced such loss in my life, I feel like I can children were relate to the kids more.” encouraged to Logan Davis share happy memories about 8

This fall, Logan is in volunteer training. Soon she will begin working with young children. She will work with another teenager and an adult volunteer with the same group each month, doing the same things she did as a child -- just on the other end.

She said the volunteers use activities individually targeted to each child based on their needs.

Logan said she’s looking forward to working with the kids at Fernside and thinks she can offer them special insight. “Because I’ve experienced such loss in my life, I feel like I can relate to the kids more.”

Since 2008, Logan’s family has grown. She lives with her mom and step-father, Kathleen and Thom Barker. Thom has a son about her age, and the couple has two kids together, a 5-year-old girl and a 3-year-old boy. Logan still keeps in touch with her dad’s older daughter.

Logan hopes that this volunteer experience can be a learning experience for both herself and the kids she works with. She thinks she will get just as much out of it as the children.

Welcome Back, Principal Mueller!

The students, faculty and staff of Mother of Mercy deserve a strong, proven and committed principal – one who has their very best interests at heart and who fully appreciates our Mercy family. Mr. Dave Mueller was that principal for two years before accepting the request by our Sisters of Mercy to become the Mercy Education Collaborative of Cincinnati (MECC) Vice President of Academics. We are pleased to announce Mr. Mueller, formerly principal of St. Xavier High School until 2012, is again Principal for Mother of Mercy.

As MECC Vice President of Academics, Mr. Mueller handled key transition and planning responsibilities for MECC, began the collaborative professional development between McAuley and Mother of Mercy and worked with our MECC leadership team in researching and exploring a strategic future of new strength for our high schools. As we begin to move MECC from a point of planning to one of thoughtful implementation, our organization has different needs than it did two years ago. Mr. Mueller and I discussed his position with MECC, as well as the leadership needed at Mother of Mercy. We agreed that timing was ideal for his full return to Principal of Mercy and a reorganization of MECC that best readies and supports our schools, teachers and staff for an inspirational strategic growth plan. Congratulations and welcome back, Principal Mueller!

President’s Reception Mother of Mercy’s annual President’s Reception was held in May to recognize those who have played a significant part in Mercy’s Annual Giving Program.

President Kirsten MacDougal was privileged to recognize these friends of Mercy. The gathering also welcomed the guest of honor, the 2015 Circle of Mercy Award recipient Denise Ortman Harvey ‘91 and this year’s new Master Teachers Chris Keller, Kate Mitchell ‘93 and Theresa Murphy.

Jubilee Year of Mercy Merciful like the Father

Beginning December 8 with the Solemnity of the Immaculate Conception, Pope Francis has declared a Jubilee Year of Mercy. In his announcement, the Holy Father said that we as sinners “will be able to find in this Jubilee the joy of rediscovering and rendering fruitful God’s mercy, with which we are called to give comfort to every man and woman of our time.” He specifically called on the Mother of Mercy “that she turn her gaze upon us and watch over our journey... to receive the mercy of God.” Pope Francis has designated several dates over the next year to recognize different groups of people including young people, those who are workers or volunteers of mercy and priests. He has written a prayer to guide us through this Jubilee year.

Lord Jesus Christ, you have taught us to be merciful like the heavenly Father, and have told us that whoever sees you sees Him. Show us your face and we will be saved.

Your loving gaze freed Zacchaeus and Matthew from being enslaved by money; the adulteress and Magdalene from seeking happiness only in created things; made Peter weep after his betrayal, and assured Paradise to the repentant thief.

Let us hear, as if addressed to each one of us, the words that you spoke to the Samaritan woman: “If you knew the gift of God!” You are the visible face of the invisible Father, of the God who manifests his power above all by forgiveness and mercy: let the Church be your visible face in the world, its Lord risen and glorified.

You willed that your ministers would also be clothed in weakness in order that they may feel compassion for those in ignorance and error: let everyone who approaches them feel sought after, loved, and forgiven by God. Send your Spirit and consecrate every one of us with its anointing, so that the Jubilee of Mercy may be a year of grace from the Lord, and your Church, with renewed enthusiasm, may bring good news to the poor, proclaim liberty to captives and the oppressed, and restore sight to the blind.

We ask this through the intercession of Mary, Mother of Mercy, you who live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit for ever and ever.

Amen.

Students Part of Interfaith Service Project Just days after Earth Day, three groups of teenagers from different cultural and religious backgrounds gathered around a shared interest to serve the community. Students from Mother of Mercy High School, the Islamic Center of Greater Cincinnati and the Mayerson JCC helped build a butterfly garden at the Imago Earth Center in Price Hill.

The organizations involved represent three of the world’s largest religions (Christianity, Islam and Judaism). The groups formed the partnership with the idea that by working towards a common goal and working alongside people with different beliefs, trust and understanding can be created where there are differences and sometimes divisiveness.

They worked to beautify the grounds around the Imago Center by laying mulch, shoring up garden borders with rocks, and planting flowers in the newly-created butterfly garden. Many of the students quickly found ways in which they were similar. Several of the students very literally got in touch with the earth by shedding their shoes and feeling the mud from several days’ worth of rain between their toes as they worked.

Afterwards, the students shared observations and reflections from the day’s events as well as some Scarlato’s Pizza. Many concluded that differences in theology and daily practices between the groups do exist. However, by serving together, they could begin to better understand one another.

Summer Service Projects Service comes second nature to the students at Mother of Mercy. Here’s a look at organizations Bobcats helped out over the summer.

Arise A group of students and Mercy adults traveled to south Texas for an immersion service program in June. They worked in the communities of Muniz and Las Milpas, running a children’s day camp, working at a refugee center, and learning about the issues surrounding immigration and the Mexican border.

St. Vincent de Paul Immersion Another group worked with students at McAuley High School to serve St. Vincent de Paul in Over-the-Rhine. The students volunteered at various non-profits around the city. They also got a chance to explore poverty and homelessness through various activities and got to see first-hand what life is like in Cincinnati’s inner-city neighborhoods.

Lake Erie Trip In June, students took a trip north to Fremont, Ohio to stay with the Sisters of Mercy at Our Lady of Pines Retreat Center. There, girls worked on a Mennonite farm to learn about migrant workers and the victims of human trafficking.

Mercy Urban Immersion Some Mercy students served the community right here at home through the Urban Immersion project. Students worked with Bethany House Services over the course of the week and got a chance to interact with some of the children the organizations helps. They also got a chance to catch a quick All Star Game pic!

Highlights

NEW SCHOOL RECORD! The 4x100 meter relay team, made up of Tiara Ward ‘17, Jennifer Ramsey ‘17, Sarah Hoesl ‘16 and Emily Sutton ‘16 broke the school record last spring at the Best of the West meet with a time of 51.25. They bettered that at the GGCL meet with a time of 50.98.

Thank You, Dick Bley!

Mr. Dick Bley, assistant varsity basketball coach at Mercy for 33 years, officially retired at the end of the 2015 season. Head coach Mary Jo Huismann ‘65 says “Dick was just a fantastic coach, not only for his years at Mercy, but for the more than 50 years that he has been coaching young people. He has coached boys and girls on all different levels. During his years at Mercy, our record was 515-255. Coaching was more than just than just basketball for Dick - life lessons were always important to him as well. Just like the people he managed at work, the girls had to aim for an excellence in getting along with each other and respecting each other. And then of course there are his one-liners - he had at least one for every occasion! We will all miss those quick comebacks. For sure, I will miss his presence and his guidance and support through all the good and the bad times.”

Former player Tricia Penderghast Reisman ‘92 adds: “We are all familiar with the expression “Home is where the heart is.” This couldn’t be truer than when I reflect back on my time as a basketball player, proudly sporting my Mercy pride. This is in large part thanks to my dynamic duo of coaches, and in particular Mr. Bley! Mercy is blessed to have attracted such dedicated coaches in all of our sports. My time as a baller, in a season that extends through the cold, dark winters, was made all the more sweeter by the presence of Mr. Bley.

His time away from his own full life and busy family, the countless hours he dedicated to the numerous young women over the many years, is the epitome of selfless. Mr. Bley was the perfect counterbalance to the equally generous Ms. Huismann. Their “marriage” on the court was a perfect blend of drive, motivation and commitment, setting the tone for our collective strive for excellence as representatives of Mercy. His knowledge of the game, ability to dissect game film and ability to relate to his players is unmatched. With three simple words, Mr. Bley had the ability to squeeze every last drop of potential from his players. To this day, those three magic words continue to be a prominent part of my own vernacular, as a mother of four young girls and youth coach myself:

Inspiring the Legacy In its 100-year history, Mother of Mercy has a long legacy of women from multiple generations who have walked its hallowed halls. We have always treasured those Mercy connections and the families who are longtime members of the Circle of Mercy.

A legacy picture of sorts first appeared in Mercy’s alumnae newsletter Memos & Memories in 1988, recognizing five members of the Class of 1958 who had daughters graduating that year. It was in 1996, however, that Mercy’s first Development & Alumnae Director Carol Trauth Dressman ‘60 decided it was time to start honoring all our families who have shared in the tradition of a Mercy education at the end of each school year.

Twenty years later, taking part in the annual tradition has become a proud moment for seniors as they join the ranks of Mercy alumnae and the bond that comes with being part of that family. This year Sara Dressman ‘15 honored her grandmother Carol’s tradition with a special legacy photo in her memory.

C ampus L ife As we say.... the Circle of Mercy is timeless. It is, indeed. In June, we celebrated with the Class of 2015 and their mothers, grandmothers, aunts and sisters who graduated before them. This fall, we welcome a new group of students from the Class of 2019 who join the ranks of Mother of Mercy legacy. And we welcome back sophomores, juniors and seniors who have family members who also call Mercy theirs.

Mercy History Preserved

A

legacy of Mercy women within a family is not uncommon, especially on the westside of Cincinnati! We are blessed to know and acknowledge the legacy of the Olding family, where great-grandmother, Ruth Bywater Franey (pictured in the center) was one of three members of Mercy’s very first graduating class. Ruth went on to attend the University of Cincinnati, married and moved to New Jersey. Keeping in touch with the Sisters of Mercy here in Cincinnati, Ruth’s daughter, Anna May, attended Our Lady of Cincinnati/Edgecliff College, married and settled in Westwood, not far from her mother’s childhood home. Consequently, Ruth’s granddaughters, Martha Olding Welling ‘76, Catharine Olding Garnett ‘80, Maria Olding Seitz ‘84 and Judy Cappel Olding ‘87, all attended Mercy.

Her great-granddaughter, Abby Seitz ‘12, has been followed by current students Caroline Seitz ‘17 and Martha Olding ‘18, while Anna Olding ‘21 waits patiently to join the legacy of the Circle of Mercy.

and son-in-law, Paul and Anna May Franey Olding, recently shared several important artifacts from Ruth’s days at Mother of Mercy Villa, as it was known when the school opened. Ruth’s diploma, class ring and valedictory speech have all been lovingly preserved by her family. The artifacts allow Mercy to correct a longstanding misconception - Mercy’s first graduates were actually from the Class of 1920!

The two students who walked through the doors of Mother of Mercy Villa in September 1915, Margaret Tappel and Etta Franz, left school at age 16 to go to work, not an uncommon practice in those days. The next class of students, who were freshmen in 1916 Helen Brinkman, Ruth Bywater and Mary Owens - all graduated on June 15, 1920.

M ercy C elebrates 100 Construction on Mother of Mercy’s facade is now complete. The school’s front entrance has been restored to its original grandeur.

Crews began work last spring. Construction workers completely demolished the railings and steps and removed broken pieces of the turrets. Then they slowly and painstakingly worked to rebuild the front steps and refurbish the building’s ornate details to match the look of the original 1924 building.

The project was funded by many very generous supporters of Mercy and highlights the school’s celebration of its 100 years of educating young women in Cincinnati. It puts a fresh face on a stillfresh institution and lays the groundwork for a solid foundation for Mercy’s next 100 years.

Mother of Mercy has always been an intellectual gem in Westwood, widely admired by people across Cincinnati. With this restoration now complete, it is once again an architectual jewel in the West Side.

Its beauty and historical presence will be treasured by the community for years to come.

Mercy Heritage on Display Not only did the outside of Mercy get a facelift, but its hallways got a little touching up, too. Last spring, we installed a Heritage Hall near the Main Lobby, capturing some of the images and items from Mercy’s past.

The display includes collages of pictures from each deacde, beginning with Mercy’s first graduating class of three students, ending with some of its current students. The cabinet with pictures from each graduating class has been moved from the lobby into this hallway as well. There are shadow boxes containing Mercy memorabilia, including a navy blue jumper, class rings, and diplomas from several eras -- one when the school was named Mother of Mercy Academy.

The wall also boasts a display of the names of people who have proudly supported Mercy with financial gifts.

Special thanks to art teacher Murray Dwertman for the hallways design and to Paul Maffey for designing the collages. Thanks to Dan Doll and the Dads Club for painting the Heritage Hallway.

Unique Place in the Spotlight

F

rom the Sapphire Girls to a sports mascot, one Mercy graduate has found her own unique place in the spotlight.

As an experienced dancer and natural leader, Clara Frey ‘12 wanted to use her skills beyond Mercy’s walls. She found that opportunity in a unique job at the University of Toledo and, more recently, with a semi-professional sports team. Clara was on the first Sapphire Girls Dance Team at Mercy, which started her senior year.

She was a captain on that team and helped some of the younger students sharpen their dance technique.

After she graduated, she enrolled at the University of Toledo to study speech language pathology. She tried out for Toledo’s dance team but didn’t make it. She began looking for another outlet for her talents.

While she was at a volleyball game, she noticed the school mascot and thought she could perform as well.

“Getting into dance gave me a lot of self-confidence.”

After a series of try-outs, Clara became one of the official “rocket” mascots. She’s called “Rocksy the Rockette” and performs at many of Toledo’s sporting events, including basketball and football games.

She also does a lot of community service as the official mascot, attending 5Ks, local schools and library reading programs. She hopes if people have a great experience with “Rocksy the Rocket,” they will want to go to Toledo.

Clara enjoys her job as the Toledo Rocket, and even met her boyfriend doing what she loves! He often performs alongside her as “Rocky the Rocket.” The pair have joined forces and are now working as mascots for a semi-professional sports team.

“Getting into dance gave me a lot of self-confidence,” Clara said. She credits Mercy with helping shape her personally and professionally, saying the school “helped me learn respect and to be a good human being who can cooperate with others.”

Clara still donates her time and talent to Mercy is several ways.

She returns to Mercy every summer to help with the Sapphire Girls camp. She also comes back to Cincinnati during breaks in school to work with some of the current Mercy students on their routines and technique. She is currently a senior at Toledo and plans to stay another two years to complete a graduate degree in speech language pathology.

Circle of Mercy Award Each year, we honor a distinguished alumna with the Circle of Mercy award. We look for a graduate who continues to live out the message of our foundress, Catherine McAuley. Someone who inspires others through her actions and words and best reflects the Mercy values of Faith, Compassion, Service, Leadership and Excellence.

This year the choice was clear. Denise Ortman Harvey ‘91, was given the award at the annual President’s Reception.

Madison Olinger was recently in India for 5 weeks on an Immersion Learning Trip through the University of Dayton, visiting Ranchi, Bangalore, Delhi and Calcutta, India and then Dubai, United Arab Emirates for a short stop. In India, the group was immerse in the culture, “living with locals and really understanding their cultural customs and ways of life! We spent a lot of time touring the country and seeing all of the amazing things it had to offer!

Most importantly, there was a lot of time spent doing service with different organizations, working on development and education.

A highlight was the time spent in Calcutta volunteering with the missionaries of Charity (the organization that Mother Teresa started), working at her home as well as the homes she started!”

Corey Specht certainly had a springtime adventure in South Africa with a nonprofit organization International Student Volunteers (ISV.) Corey, part of a team of 30 students from around the world, spent a month in Chinsta, South Africa, on the Eastern Cape, with Volunteer Africa 32 Degrees South, VA32. “I built a playground with 11 other girls in the village of Kwelerha.

While building this playground, we got to build relationships with the children who went to this daycare (ages 0-5.)

In the afternoons, we played and taught sports to children of all ages.

After two weeks of service, we moved onto the adventure part of the tour.

We traveled throughout South Africa, Swaziland, and Mozambique, where we enjoyed elephant encounters, scuba diving, swimming with wild dolphins, cliff jumping, and more. It honestly was an amazing experience that I will never forget. I hope to spend my whole summer over there next year.”
