The West Plains MSW Program

The Profession of Social Work Do you want to help people in various ways as a master-trained professional? Would you like to be the voice of those who cannot advocate for themselves?

Are you interested in advancing social justice?

West Plains MSW Program Earn a Master of Social Work degree by taking classes entirely at the MSU-West Plains Campus and online through Missouri State Outreach.

The University is committed to nontraditional graduate students in the West Plains area, offering live and/or blended courses in the late afternoons and evenings. Several of the courses are also delivered online.

The program emphasis is the Family Health Social Work perspective which allows graduates to work within the micro, mezzo, and macro-practice social work fields. The curriculum is infused with clinical, organizational, and advocacy skills. Upon graduation, students can pursue the LMSW and/or the LCSW license.

The Master of Social Work in West Plains offers the regular MSW program in part-time status, which consists of 62 graduate level credit hours. Each student will complete two professional practicum placements for a total of 975 clock hours within two different approved field agencies. Students with a bachelor’s degree in social work should contact the School of Social Work at (417) 836-6953 for information on the Advanced Standing program.

If you answered “yes” to any of those questions, then the profession of social work may be for you. An MSW opens the door to countless occupations, from direct client care to social policy formulation at the local, state, and national levels.

Open to Students of Any Undergraduate Major n Students in West Plains and the surrounding area with a bachelor’s degree in a field other than social work are admitted in regular standing and must take 62 credit hours. n Students in West Plains will complete the program as part-time students finishing within 4 years, with cohorts beginning in a fall semester.

According to the U.S. Department of Labor: Employment for social workers is expected to grow much faster than the average for all occupations through 2016, by an increase of 22 percent in the 2006-2016 decade.

Job prospects are expected to be favorable, particularly for social workers who specializing in the aging population or in rural areas.

n Courses are designed for working professionals and will be delivered in the evenings via Interactive Video (ITV), online, blended, and face-to-face.

The employment opportunities for MSW graduates are as diverse as our society.

The Application Process New student cohorts form in West Plains each fall semester in odd numbered calendar years. Admission to the program is competitive. Completed application packets are due to the School of Social Work office by January 31st of the year of admission, by 5pm.
