Hats Off to the Greens Team

Submitted by Joanne Bannon The Moss-Bradley neighborhood is full of “do-ers”—people who are ready and willing to get a job done, regardless of the payoff or recognition! The do-ers came out again this year in full force to make our neighborhood festive for the holidays and then to clean it up after the New Year! Many thanks to the following 2011-2012 Greens Team who helped hang and/or remove more than 2, 200 feet of roping on the MossBradley lightposts: 10 Members of PKA Fraternity, Jim Evanhuis, Skip Cravens, Tim Shaw, John Timmerman, John and Marcy Marter, Nick Cowley, Bob Monier, Jason & Melinda Breede, John & Cindy McLean, Paul Masick, Wayne & Tatiana Johnson, Bruce Zilkowski, Brian Buralli and Maureen Matthews (with Cottage District helpers), Rod Lorenz, Joe Merkle, Andrew Rand, Sid Ruckreigel, Joe Vilmos, and Michael Covert. If you are interested in joining this enthusiastic and productive bunch, mark your calendars for the Saturday before Thanksgiving 2012 – the date (weather permitting) we will hang greens for next season!

Next Membership Meeting Wednesday, Feb. 1 Social 6:30 p.m. Meeting 7:00 p.m. Westminster Hall, 1420 W. Moss Guest: Chief Brian Joschko, University Police Department at Bradley University

A Letter from the President Reflection on neighborhood events over the past year and planning for the next year lead once again to the question “What makes this a good place to live?” There are, of course, many answers to the question, but one important answer is the willingness of residents to pitch in and help with this week’s or this month’s project.

Many contributions keep this organization going. Some take only a little time and occur infrequently. Some must be done every month and take more time. Almost all of them bring multiple people together to accomplish a common goal, and thereby help create the cement that holds us together and makes us as sturdy as these old houses we love.

All those Moss-Bradley signature events, such as the Hanging of the Greens, the Moss Avenue Sale, the annual potluck, the vibrant membership meetings, publication of the Monthly Messenger—all of them depend on numerous volunteers. Look at the tasks performed by those volunteers and you will find that added together they have a big impact—even though individually they may be so small they may go unnoticed. These volunteer efforts define the Moss Bradley Residential Association and the neighborhood we live in.

There is something you can do to make your life better by making the neighborhood better. The task may seem small and inconsequential, but it will make a difference. Consider asking one of the Board members listed on the back of this newsletter, “What can I do to help?” I guarantee, we will find something that suits you. As my predecessor was fond of saying, “After all, it’s the Moss-Bradley way.”

BU Campus Coalition

Rod Lorenz

President, Moss-Bradley Residential Association

Submitted by Lyndsey Hawkins, Coordinator of Alcohol Education & Awareness Programs at Bradley University About one year ago, Bradley University formed a Campus Coalition to address substance abuse issues on and around campus. The coalition consists of many Bradley University staff members, but also Jim Evenhuis from your own neighborhood! Quarterly, the coalition meets to discuss pressing issues and brainstorms solutions to any problems. Issues that directly affect the local neighborhoods include how to encourage responsible citizenship of students living in rental properties, absentee landlords, nuisance properties, ordinances, and more. If you have any ideas or ways to contribute to the coalition, contact Lyndsey at lhawkins@bradley.edu.

Thru the Windshield How do we look to those passing by?

Observations ... questions ... hopes ... concerns Compiled by Marjorie Klise

One September morning in 2011, the answer to the newspaper’s “Cryptoquote” was one that definitely resonated with me:

At commission gatherings we hear the stories of particular problems and opportunities. We listen and take action. At our monthly neighborhood gatherings we hear from our neighbors in order to help when needed. We welcome new friends and their stories. We say goodbye to those who leave us and keep their stories close to our hearts.

This is such a perfect example of what our neighborhood is all about.

On our front porches we listen to some very personal stories of sorrow and joy and we offer support and encouragement. We laugh and we cry. We listen to honor our past. We listen to invigorate the present. We listen and envision the potential of a vibrant future. Our community gathers and listens and learns.

At large civic gatherings we listen to our government tell us the story of what is happening in Peoria and what is planned for our future. We listen and learn.

Editor’s Note: A few of our writers are taking a break this month. We will see them back next month!

Community is gathering around the fire and listening to someone tell us a story.
