SPORTS COMMISSION AWARDS SET FOR JUNE 20

Nearly 200 student-athletes and 10 teams from southwest Missouri high schools will be honored this summer during the 11h annual Sports Commission Awards. Sponsored by Ellio Lodging, the ceremony is set for Tuesday, June 20 at the Ozark Empire Fairgrounds in Springfield. Doors open at 6 p.m., with the awards show to begin at 7 p.m.

Athletes will be recognized in tennis, golf, swimming and diving, cross country, so ball, soccer, volleyball, football, wrestling, basketball, track and field, and baseball. Sports offered to girls and boys are split into their respec ve categories.

Football has finalists for offensive skill posions, defense and linemen. Wrestling will include lower weights and upper weights.

New this year will be an Emerging Sports category featuring bass fishing, bowling,

boys volleyball, Esports and target shoo ng. A Spirit category of cheerleading, dance and marching band also will be recognized. In both categories, one winner will be chosen.

Addi onally, the Sports Commission Awards also will feature finalists for boys and girls Teams of the Year and Athletes of the Year, along with Performance of the Year. The SCAs also will highlight Inspira on Awards.

All finalists for fall and winter sports can now be found at www.mosportshalloffame.com, and spring sports will be announced in the coming weeks.

Sponsorship tables of eight are $350, while individual ckets are $50 in advance, or $60 at the door. Numerous sponsorships also are available, as well as congratulatory ads for the event program. Call the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame at 417-889-3100.

MSHOF Excited for Annual Springfield Golf & Bingo Bash

Join the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame for our annual two-day event – the Bingo Bash & Auc on Party and Springfield Celebrity Golf Classic, Sunday and Monday, June 4-5 at Oasis Hotel & Conven on Center and Highland Springs Country Club.

Hall of Fame Spotlight On.... TYLER HANSBROUGH

Poplar Bluff na ve Tyler Hansbrough, who was inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame last February, will be enshrined into the Na onal Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on August 30 in Chicago.

The unanimous 2008 Na onal Player of the Year at North Carolina, Hansbrough is the Atlan c Coast Conference’s all- me leading scorer, the fourth-leading scorer in NCAA Tournament history, the NCAA’s all- me record-holder in free throws made and the only ACC player to lead his team in scoring and rebounding in all four seasons.

He is also the only four- me All-American in ACC history.

From 2005-09 he led Carolina to a 120-22 record, three No. 1 seeds in the NCAA Tournament, three ACC regular season- tles, two ACC Tournament championships, two NCAA regional tles and Final Four berths and the 2009 NCAA championship.

He will be inducted August 30 in Chicago as part of a class that includes Duke’s Mike Krzyzewski and Johnny Dawkins, Jefferson University coach Herb Magee and the late talent scout Tom Konchalski, who directed the Five-Star Basketball Camp.

In Memoriam...

Former Mexico High School track & field head coach Ron Whi aker passed away on May 12. He was 80.

Whi aker and the Mexico Track & Field 1974-79 Era were inducted into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame in Columbia last November. The Mexico teams won state championships in 1975, 1976 and 1977.

A member of the Missouri Track & Field Coaches Hall of Fame, Whi aker was a four- me Missouri state track coach of the year, and an MSHSAA track & field and cross country official for 37 years. He served as head official for the 2021 SEC Cross Country championships.

Long me St. Louis Post-Dispatch journalist Rick Hummel died on May 20 in St. Louis. He was 77.

One of the most respected journalists in baseball, Hummel was so popular with his colleagues that they dubbed him “The Commish”.

A 1968 graduate of the University of Missouri School of Journalism, Hummel began working at the St. Louis Post-Dispatch in 1971. He covered 42 MLB All-Star games and 35 World Series.

Hummel was inducted into the writer’s wing of the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, NY on July 29, 2007.

Former Pi sburgh Pirates and St. Louis Cardinals great Dick Groat died on April 27 in Pi sburgh, Pa. He was 92.

A 2012 inductee into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, Groat was named Na onal League Most Valuable Player in 1960 with the Pirates a er leading the NL with a .325 ba ng average. The Pirates defeated the Yankees in the World Series, winning on a memorable walk-off home run by Bill Mazeroski.

At the end of his baseball career, Groat ranked ninth in major league history in games at shortstop (1,877) and fourth in double plays (1,237), and was among the NL career leaders in putouts (10th, 3,505), assists (8th, 5,811) and total chances (9th, 9,690).

Also an excellent basketball player, he a ended Duke University, where he was a two- me All-American and was voted as the Helms Na onal Player of the Year in 1952 a er averaging 25.2 points per game. He played one season as a guard in the NBA.

In 2011 Groat was inducted into the Na onal College Baseball Hall of Fame, becoming the first man ever inducted into both the college basketball and college baseball halls of fame.

In November 1962, the Pirates traded Groat to the Cardinals.

Groat was deeply hurt by the trade, having hoped to become a coach and eventually manager a er re ring, and severed all contact with the team un l a 1990 reunion of the 1960 champions. He had another outstanding year in 1963, finishing fourth in the league with a .319 ba ng average – just seven points behind champion Tommy Davis — and collec ng 201 hits. He was the runner-up in the MVP vo ng, behind Sandy Koufax.
