Welcome to the 2017 Moses & Son Spring Catalogue. The catalogue aims to be informative and insightful to the reader by presenting unique and exciting stories on our amazing Sheep and Wool Industry.

Our market environment is currently in the best shape I have seen in my 4 decades of being in business. The strength across a wide range of merino MPG’s is being fuelled by increasing demand which seem to be outstripping supply. In addition there are new and exciting markets using new technology and innovative manufacturing techniques to achieve both function and fashion around the world. Put simply “Wool is back in the limelight at retail, however, the supply remains static.�

Not only is the technology assisting our markets, it is also helping us run our farms with a host of new APPS being released onto the market. Our sheep operation recently switched to Agriwebb Farm Management Software, which I have been very impressed with as a comprehensive management and reporting tool that has agility in our farm management structure.

I have been hearing that data is power and we are now getting a taste of where it may take us. Any business can use data to assist, but we have seen huge inroads made in data aiding the classing of our sheep, selection of our rams to take our business model forward, accurately predict pasture growth, and therefore manage stocking rates, meet our onfarm statuary requirements, and generally better manage our farms. There are a host of tools on offer that have the capacity to not only predict your likely production, but allow you to manipulate the outcomes. Once again this is very exciting for those who wish to examine where they have been and where they might progress to.

On the wool logistics front, Moses & Son have embarked on a huge in-store efficiency program to reduce the labour unit input to sampling and the warehousing of our wool. Our new automated core line has streamlined the Temora operation, but in addition, allowed us to extend the technology gains to both the Wagga and Condobolin machinery.

The result will be a quicker turn around for test results which means the possibility of getting your wool catalogued in a shorter time frame. The investment is not only in the automation of the machinery, our systems will come under a complete review to ensure the industry best systems match the latest innovation in equipment in the industry. I envisage that this move to automation will continue to revolutionise handling in this country.

Part of the new systems will be aimed at adding value on your farm and in your shearing sheds and yards.

This includes the introduction of portable weighing platforms being ferried into shearing sheds to assist our clients to calibrate the wool press scales, ensuring wool bales meet industry standards. Our Technical officers will also be working with their clients to complete the NWD section of the specifications, to allow the documents to be ready for shearing and streamline the shearing shed to warehouse for the consignments.

Moses & Son are also working to run a number of workshops each year to highlight the changes in classing and marketing options for Wool producers and Wool classers alike. If our industry expects these price increase to be maintained, the industry as a whole must address the uniformity of our classed lines, the accuracy of our descriptions and the supporting documentation and, most importantly, ensure we deliver our clips contamination free. The number of classers specifications received with missing or erroneous information is greater than 60% across Australia. There is definitely room for improvement in this area.

Our development is clip analysis has been extended to measure historical movements and allow our clients to make informed choices regarding production, marketing and management well before shearing starts. Whilst this service has been slowly developing it has been trialled in a few clients with noticeable success.

We carry portable scales to help you calibrate your shed scales, with the purpose of eliminating over and underweight bales. The aim is to optimise your bale weights to create efficiencies and save money.

Increase competition for your clip on the auction floor by completing the National Wool Declaration correctly and in full. Exporters need to fill orders and we are seeing a significant increase in demand for declared wool. We can spend time with you before the chaos of shearing to help you complete the National Wool Declaration and answer any of your questions. The definition of ‘Ceased Mulesing’ changed on the 1 July 2017. You can no longer claim the CM status if you purchase mulesed sheep. Be sure to ask our staff if you are unsure if you still qualify for this status.

In March/April 2017, 22 sheep and wool enthusiasts embarked on an 8 day study tour of New Zealand’s South Island.

The tour provided travellers with an insight to New Zealand’s Merino sheep production as well as the opportunity to observe applied technology, research and development.

The feedback from the group was outstanding and we will be looking to run similar tours in the future.

 OPERATIONS PLANNING  PRECISION SHEEP MANAGEMENT INCLUDING EID & FLEECE WEIGHING

A big thank you to you and your team for the fabulous "Farm to Farm" tour to New Zealand recently. We had a fantastic time, and enjoyed the terrific company of all on the tour. A great fun bunch to travel with. Gavin and Wayne were a wealth of knowledge and Wayne's sense of humour made each day.

The future of Bale Processing?

The preliminary results of the AWEX bale processing trial were met with great success. There was positive feedback from all fractions of the bale processing pipe line, with many wool classers adopting the new software (AWEX WoolClip) for recording bales in shed and managing classers specification and shipping consignments from the property to the testing facility.

However, to run a fully controlled commercial trial AWEX required a closed system with one testing facility to allow bales to be tracked through warehousing into the dump. The Western Australian Wool Industry provided the closest parameters to this situation. So the next stage of the e-Bale trial will be conducted in Western Australia.

Are mineral supplements worth your time & money?

The final data collection has been concluded, at the nine sites which hosted The Vitamin & Mineral Supplement trial. The preliminary results are being calculated by analysts at Charles Sturt University with the results to be released in November 2017.

Know how your sheep will perform before they do?

The results from the Genomic trial have resulted in a commercial benchmarking and selection tool known as the Flock Profile. Flock Profile is a new service that provides breeding values based on DNA relationships to commercial Merino producers. Producers can now receive breeding values which are directly comparable to ASBVs which allows any commercial Merino breeder to make more informed buying and/or mating decisions in their flock.

With over 2500 individual Merinos tested so far, every sheep has had genomic breeding values calculated regardless if the sires of tested sheep are from Sheep Genetics population or not. This demonstrates the genomic reference population is a reasonably good representation of the Merino population in Australia.

Flock Profile only needs to be used every 3-4 years to “check-in” on the flock.

Which Bloodline suits your operations?

The Sire Evaluations are conducted over 24 months with the progeny being measured for fleece and carcase traits every year. The Sire evaluation site at Jugiong has drawing to a close, with the final measurements being taken this year. The new trial site for the MerinoLink Sire evaluation is located near Yass in NSW with a portion of the wethers being ran on as “Wool Cutter” and their measurements being reported on for sire performance.

Carcase 

The perceived constraints to the adoption of fleece weighing are the set up costs and a lack of time. The following report has been developed to show the net benefit to sheep enterprises who undertake fleece weighing for use in selection of stock.

The charge of $2.70/hd included labour and hire equipment charge.

Sheep were ranked based on their fleece and carcase values; the top 25% and bottom 25% were identified for both fleece value and carcase value and also for total overall value.  

The figures used in this analysis are from a commercial sheep enterprise in New South Wales, where Moses & Son conducted the fleece weighing of the 2016 drop Maiden ewes.

The following background information is essential to understand why and how the analysis was conducted.

Side samples were not taken on these sheep, micron and yield were determined from bale test results.     

Sheep who fell in the top 25% for both fleece value and carcase value were identified as Tops.

Sheep who fell in the bottom 25% for both fleece value and carcase value were identified as Bottoms.

Of the sheep who were identified as Bottoms; those individuals who were in the bottom 25% for overall value were identified as culls. These animals make up the 22% which have been “sold” in this example.

Table 1 depicts that the total cost of fleece weighing the mob came to $2,192 the carcase value of selling the bottom 22% identified as Culls, ($2,661) comfortably covers the cost of the fleece weighing for the producer.

Once these bottom performers have been identified and removed from the breeding flock, it can been seen that there is a $2.41 increase in the average value of the sheep within the mob.

The benefits of fleece weighing maiden ewes not only includes increased fleece weight, it also includes the increase in overall value of the mob, and also the cumulative increase in the value of the progeny produced by those ewes.

UNLOADING SAFETY Moses & Son is committed to a safe work environment for the health, safety and welfare of our employees, contractors, visitors and members of the public who may be affected by our work.

For the safety of all drivers and operators we would appreciate your cooperation with the safe unloading of trucks.

1. Please give us a call to let us know you are heading in and how many bales you have on.

2. Upon arrival, park between the yellow lines at a safe distance from any other trucks.

Drivers, if you haven’t been to our site before, please ask our staff members for assistance.  Hi-Vis shirt/vest should be worn at all times whilst on site.  Follow directions of the forklift operator when driving into unloading area.  Hand over paperwork (Classer Specie) for unloading to the forklift operator.  Prior to unloading, the forklift operator will inspect the load for “in transit movement” and instability.

If the load appears unstable, the forklift should be used to straighten the load BEFORE straps etc. are released  Remain in any of the Designated Safety Zones or in cab whilst unloading is occurring.  Speak with the forklift operator when there is a requirement to shift curtains/bars/gates or a check on the loading.  Do not move into the unloading area until the forklift has come to a stop with handbrake applied, or, the forklift has moved a safe distance away (3m safety exclusion zone).  Drivers must not close curtains on the opposite side of truck, whilst unloading is occurring. The Forklift Operator will cease unloading if this occurs.  Drivers must adhere to site traffic plans and pedestrian walkways, when moving around the site.  Upon completion of unloading; the Forklift Operator will advise that straps may be rolled etc., and the truck may depart from the area.

DRIVERS – BEFORE YOU UNSTRAP! 1. Look up and assess the load for unstable bales.

2. If bales have shifted, ask a forklift driver to straighten them.

3. Unstrap and move to safety zone, truck cabin or tea room.

In August 2017, O’Connor Wooltech installed the Wooltech Automatic Two Head Grab - Two Core Wool Sampling Line in the Temora Store. The new sampling machine has the capacity to double the throughput, increasing our warehousing efficiencies with the aim to get your bales to sale earlier.

Features of the Machine Automatic core sampling. The operator enters the number of bales in the lot, the standard number of cores per bale is calculated and displayed. The specified number of bales are then sampled automatically.

The core machine communicates with the scales. During the sampling of a lot, as soon as steady weight is achieved on a bale an automatic core cycle is initiated. The bale weight is held on the core machine display for 18 seconds or more, until the next auto core cycle is commenced.

The Bale Pictures System takes photos of the bale presenting large clear pictures of the bale cap and the identification markings to the operators at the appropriate time. It also eliminates need to orientate bales so that the side brand faces the person who is recording bale details at the scales station.

New Faces at Moses & Son We are pleased to welcome Jackie Thompson to the team as the Wool Technical Officer in West Wyalong, replacing Bronnie Rogers.

Jackie has a wealth of experience in sheep and genetics and is very much looking forward to servicing the Central West.

Ian Mott & Veronika Hartmeier are the new look Warehouse team in Wagga whilst Blaer Wishart is on Maternity Leave.

Ian & Veronika both are wool classers with a flair for customer service.
