MESSAGE FROM MARTY A purple patch for Sheep and Wool The old saying “Australia rode on the sheep’s back” may become relevant once again with the trend back to wool, lamb and sheep meat. Currently Merino wool prices are operating above the 90th percentile band, whilst lamb and mutton are also in keen demand. The question commonly being asked is “what will it take to win back the farmland use that has seen Wool production shrink to historically low volumes through all sorts of price trends and seasonal conditions”. Reality is that the past trend to vines, dairy, dry land broad-acre cereal cropping have all encountered their challenges, and amidst droughts, floods, fire, conservationists, animal liberation groups and the foreign and local corporate grab for our agricultural land, the majority of the humble farmers have been able to grow their balance sheet.

Whilst this has been largely due to the increase in rural land values across most of the country, we are now seeing fibre and protein production from sheep enterprises start to return solid EVOLUTION OF MOSES & SON margins to those faithful who have held the steady course in the age 2016 Merino Lifetime Productivity Trial old enterprise. 2014 Purchased R&D Farm in Temora Despite the romance of the story told, the basics of business still rule for these enterprises. The journey over the past 36 years has shown me that the successful businesses have commonalities which include sustainable production models, cutting edge husbandry and management and, finally, a dash of prudent risk management of our product price. It sounds so simple yet it is frightening how many times I have seen decision making outside of these basics go horribly wrong and damage the future of our farming enterprises.

It is with this in mind that Moses & Son enter into a new era of client consultation. The management and staff recognise the reduction of NSW Department Sheep and Livestock Officers has left the industry with a shortage of industry specific resources. Marty, through Moses & Son, MerinoLink Limited, Bluechip Livestock and their research facility, has recognised the shortfall and is moving towards filling that gap by developing a business plan that will deliver new industry consultants into the mix. This is demonstrated by the re-education of current technical staff members as well as supporting the MLA internship program, where Moses & Son and Sally Martin Consulting share an intern, to develop them to a sheep and wool consultant.

Immobilizer Sheep Worker PURPOSE The Immobilizer is a truly multi-purpose mobile machine, it provides for husbandry and other operations and with optional modules added, is the primary restraining device to enable sheep/lamb weighing and data recording, drafting and crutching etc.

Sheep are gently immobilized and safely restrained. Suitable for handling all sized lambs and grown sheep including rams.

Many husbandry operations can be performed quickly and easily (including drenching, capsule insertion, vaccinating, back-lining, ear tagging, mouthing, crutching, wigging, horn trimming and more).

CONSTRUCTION All steel construction, mostly galvanized sheet metal and precision laser cut components are used. The working parts of the machine are completely enclosed. Two opposing stretched rubber pads, with adjustable tension, are used to restrain each sheep. The pads are actuated by quick acting air chambers located internally. The unit is compact and has two,150mm rubber wheels and handles for easy movement over a firm surface by one person.

The Immobilizer can be operated in almost any location and can be quickly and easily set up or broken down for transport.

The working height can be adjusted to suit the operator as well as the width and height for the sheep.

An air compressor, 8-10 cfm with pressure available ranging from around 80-120 psi is required for operation. A charged 12 volt battery is also required to power the simple electronics.

It can be supplied with a full lead up system or as a stand alone unit for permanent use in sheds or yards. The 3 metre galvanized non-back lead up ramp (in two separate linked together pieces) is required for good sheep flow.

A jump-stop frame can be clamped to the ramp which prevents sheep jumping over the next in front. A single or dual race lead up system is the preferred option to guide the sheep into the unit with minimum effort.

Research & Development Converting the research into useable information and practical solutions for commercial producers.

Moses & Son and Bluechip Livestock are committed to enhancing innovation and research with the purchase of a research block near Temora in 2014. After establishing a solid merino research base at the Temora Agricultural Innovation Centre it was a natural step to move to our own property. The new facility will play host to a number of research initiatives including the Genomic Validation trial, Joining Fat vs. Condition Score, Lifetime Ewe Productivity Trial and eID Tag trial.

The aim of all of our research and trial work is to is to be able to convert the research into useable information and practical solutions for commercial producers.

THE FUTURE OF BALE PROCESSING What: The identification of wool bales via RFID technology. The intention is that the RFID tag can be read at any stage through the wool supply chain, from farm to broker to processor, and accurately identify each bale using a unique RFID number.

Why: The benefits to the grower will most likely be achieved through a linkage between electronic Classer’s Specifications and RFID tagged bales, ensuring that all bales are identified and described correctly. WoolClip provides analytical capabilities and being able to transmit the data direct to the wool broker could open up all sorts of possibilities.

ARE MINERAL SUPPLEMENTS WORTH YOUR TIME & MONEY? What: Six different commercially available supplements are being tested to determine if it is financially beneficial for producers to use such products.
