I’ve been New In Town for twelve months now. My first New In article espoused the virtues of our village, and I continue to be enamoured. I’m still working on Moseley’s must-dos, should-dos and I didn’t-knowyou-could-dos, but before stepping into the story of my latest visit I must take a side-step.

On Groundhog Day 2015, Punxsutawney Phil came out and saw a shadow. Another six weeks brings us to Mid-March. Spring is coming.

In early February 2015 I sat in the park with a flask of coffee and a supermarket picnic. Come spring, I see myself sat on a bench on a Sunday, top right corner I fancy, with a good book, and a sandwich. Later I’ll be joined by friends before sneaking off for a pint and then home for tea. The park is part of what makes Moseley so special. It gives us chance to slow things down, sit, read and enjoy the company of others. The sun just eases that a little by giving us more time outside, and I look forwards to another spring in Moseley.

Happy Groundhog Day Moseley.

Groundhog Day, hailed by some as the best comedy film of all time, celebrates a North American tradition and features Mr Bill Murray at his Bill-iliant best. On February 2nd, in the film and real life, people gather in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania and ask if Phil the groundhog sees a shadow. If he does that’s six more weeks of winter folks.

What makes the film so strong is the deliberate efforts to avoid making cultural references, so it remains timeless. Some things date and some don’t. The concrete Bullring in the Telly Sevalas YouTube clip (check it out) did date, the present one may do but something like the Moseley Park does not. I like to think how many people have sat, played and walked in this place.

Karen Leach

quite strong at the time. He and lots of other people thought that it would be good to get together and propose a positive model of how economic development could be.

How we would manage that model? What policies we would have?

A MOSELEY LIFE

Karen laughs as she describes the first meeting. “I invited myself along. Everyone else had, shall we say, some decades of experience to draw on, so I felt like a gatecrasher. They are great people and between us we have kept it going. But now I’d like some more gatecrashers please we still need a good dose of youth and enthusiasm.”

Karen Leach lives in the last road with a B13 postcode before Church Road turns into Ladypool Road. She campaigns for the Green agenda and as a founder member of Localise West Midlands (LWM) she campaigns to develop vibrant, resilient local economies to help create a more sustainable economic future. Here is her Moseley life.

Karen admits to sometimes being a bit of an inverted snob about living in Moseley.

“I sometimes say I live in Balsall Heath because I think it has a bit of an edge to it, and it’s a bit of a cliché to be a green person living in Moseley.” Dear reader, before you start gnashing your teeth…

Birmingham is her adopted home and Karen has lived in and around Moseley for more than 15 years. She is the face of Localise West Midlands, a not for profit think tank, campaign group and consultancy. How did she get involved?

“In 2001 I heard a bunch of people were getting together including Colin Hines, who wrote Localisation: A Global Manifesto. He wanted to get together with some people from the West Midlands to discuss Localising.”

In his book, Hines sets out a positive alternative to the pervasive view of globalisation’s onward march, as inevitable and irrevocable. He describes this surrender as, ‘a fatalism that grips not just politicians but concerned citizens and those organisations working for a fairer world’.

The group came up with ideas for projects they could do and gradually Karen got more involved. It was suggested she could become the paid co-ordinator for the organisation only there was no money.

“My first job was to find some. I think I was the only person that was headhunted for a job that meant I took a pay cut.”

This is a woman who walks the talk. But what drives her? “Having been a member of Friends of the Earth (FOE), which is a good broad organisation with a focus on social justice: making life better for people.

When you look at the problems facing the environment or people you come to the conclusion that the economy is where you want to make things different.

“And I really hope that the communities that go to those shops don’t start thinking it’s a bit backward and we want a Tesco (other supermarkets are available). I hope they understand the value of what they have brought to that area.

“When you shop in a locally owned shop they are likely to be using local suppliers and the owner of that shop will be a local. So the money you pay them stays in the local economy and local people benefit from it. If you buy from a supermarket, most of the money will go straight out of the local economy.

How does Karen think businesses can be encouraged to support the Localise agenda? “There is a big answer to that.

But on a smaller scale, people who want to support what they like about Moseley should get an Independent Birmingham card.

“There are things Business Improvement Districts can do that celebrate diversity and distinctiveness. And of course there are local currencies like the Bristol Pound (£B), http://bristolpound.org, which are exchangeable with sterling (1:1) but have to be spent in locally owned establishments.

Can the effect of shopping locally be measured? “It’s complex because there are so many variables to consider. There is a tool, Local Multiplier Three, developed by the New Economics Foundation. But that is only part of it. There is a concentration of the wealth within a very few organisations.

“Local currencies can make people more conscious and increase their understanding of the benefits of spending in locally owned businesses. Bristolians can pay a proportion of their Council Tax using the £B and the Mayor takes his entire salary in £Bs. We are starting discussions about a local currency for Birmingham and the Black Country.

“About 500 companies control two thirds of the world economy, but only create one per cent of the jobs and we just need to change that balance. It’ll be good for local supply chains, people and of course diversity on local high streets.

“We’ve all walked down high streets and wondered why we bothered to go there because they have exactly the same shops as Birmingham city centre. I think it’s great to have that distinctiveness, the relationships and social capital that comes from locally owned independent businesses. For me Balsall Health is a good example of that.

What does it feel like to have your passion be your work? “I feel very lucky.

Not many people get to do that. It can be a bit lonely sometimes, which is something I want to sort out. Trying to persuade people to run economies differently is not very lucrative. I work as a gardener one day a week with Lupin gardening company. So I do two things absolutely love for a living”.

So the next question is, how well does Moseley do when viewed through the localised agenda? Well I am afraid to Karen it compares less favourably with the Ladypool. “This why sometimes I say I am from Balsall Heath. If you go down the Ladypool Road you can buy so much info@moseleyb13.com

Sir Patrick Hannon: An Ideal MP for Moseley

As we approach St. Patrick's Day, many will recall that the annual parade in Digbeth - the spiritual home of the Irish in our city - is now the third largest in the world, but it's also worth taking time to remember the first Irish MP for Birmingham, Sir Patrick Hannon, and his contribution to the city. Described in The New York Times obituary as "one of parliaments most colourful characters", he was also a leading industrialist in Britain and the Conservative and Unionist member of parliament for Moseley between 1921-1950. Born in Taverane, Co. Sligo in 1874 (or 1870 according to some sources), his father was a poor farmer and Sir Patrick would go on to offer great support for Irish workers and agriculture.

He attended the Royal University of Ireland and Royal College of Science, and joined the staff of Great Western Railway in 1887.

A devout Catholic, he funded part of the rebuilding of St. Dunstan's Roman Catholic Church in Kings Heath and was the treasurer of the Apostleship of the Sea, an agency of the Catholic Church in support of seafarers.

He was administrative initiator of the Imperial Pioneers, later the British Commonwealth Union, and his talents even passed into Birmingham sports as the president of Aston Villa - the club won the FA Cup during his tenure in 1957.

The New York Times recalled his unique ambitions: "For half a century he was an aggressive salesman for the Empire and the Commonwealth". He led many campaigns to aid British world trade as president of National Union of Manufacturers from 1935 - 1953. Sir Patrick was knighted in 1936 and, having survived a Labour landslide in 1945, retired from the House, undefeated, in 1950. He died in London on 10th January, 1963.

In 1910, after time spent in South Africa, Sir Patrick moved to England and first entered the House of Commons on 4th March, 1921, serving Moseley for almost thirty years. He was also president of the Ideal Benefit Society, helping working class people buy their first homes, and among his other local achievements were his efforts to support ex-servicemen and records testify to Hannon's lobbying for "motor cars provided for seriously disabled HISTORY

Sir Patrick's business acumen was duly noted in the tribute but it also touched on his kind spirit. "His astonishing success in politics was equalled in big business. Sheer intellectual prowess applied with unbroken will won him world-wide influence and prestige. He was the most generous of men, an imperturbable companion, always warm-hearted and witty."

Contact the Elderly

area. The charity is looking to significantly expand within the next 2 years; therefore there will be huge capacity to make a positive impact on the lives of many more local elderly people.

Contact the Elderly, a leading national charity dedicated to tackling loneliness and isolation among older people, is inviting local residents in South Birmingham to join its monthly tea parties and enjoy a few hours of tea, chat and good company.

Currently the group in Kings Heath has space for a number of new guests to join, and the charity is keen to raise awareness of these openings among the local community.

More pressingly, we currently have a shortage of volunteer drivers and elderly guests in the local area, There are two groups in the Kings Heath area, and two groups in the Edgbaston area, both of which border ‘B13’, and could be accessed

by Moseley residents”.

Contact the Elderly, with the support of thousands of volunteers all across the UK, organises monthly tea parties for small groups of older people, aged 75 and above, who live alone and would like some company on a Sunday afternoon.

Each guest is collected from their home by a volunteer driver and taken to a volunteer host’s home, where they meet with a small group for tea, chat and friendship. The group is welcomed by a different host each month, but the drivers remain the same which means that over the months and years, acquaintances turn into friends and loneliness is replaced by companionship.

Birmingham's cycle campaign group is opening its 2015 season with two special events in Moseley in March.

Push Bikes, the Birmingham Cycling Campaign, is holding two 'Discover Cycling' evenings in the Red Room of the Moseley Exchange on the 17th and 24th March from 7pm until 9pm, all welcome.

Whether you are an experienced cyclist or yet to own your first bike, 'Discover Cycling' will show how to choose a bike, explain simple adjustments, demonstrate puncture repair and take the mystery out of all those gears!

to hold the title). In 1766, Taylor leased the mill to John Allen for 14 years and this relationship is repeated with Sarehole Mill, which Taylor also owned, when Allen became the tenant. During the lease, the windmill is mentioned again in 1773 as “standing up on part of the common or beaste land belonging to and being part of the Manor of Yardley”.

Standing on the edge of Moseley Bog, accompanied by birdsong and the flow of the Coldbath Brook, it’s easy enough to conjure up a rural yesteryear and imagine a further sound of windmill sails, gradually turning as we pass through the spring equinox. In reality, a post-mill did exist near this point - at the rear of Adrian Croft on Wake Green Playing Fields and situated on a “small knoll” - up

As the windmill was demolished by 1834, we are left without photographic evidence but are blessed to have a rare recording of a Birmingham windmill contained in an illustration of the area.

Moseley Common near Birmingham is a sketch by David Cox, an influential watercolourist and oil painter of the Birmingham School of landscape, from 1819, and the Wake Green windmill is captured in charismatic late-era ruins. It was featured in Cox’s book The Young Artist’s Companion and he is remembered with works on display at Birmingham Museum & Art Gallery, British Museum and Tate Gallery.

Our photograph captures the area of the lost windmill and the David Cox work, based on the sketch, historical information and archaeological coordinates.

until the 19th century and is on record as belonging to Sir Richard Grevis of Moseley Hall from 1664. The deed states: “All that windmill with the appurtenancies situate and being near unto the said watermills (at Greathurst and Swanshurst)”. The Middle English use of “appurtenancies” indicates that this structure, connected with status, was an attachment to more significant property - the nearby water mills that are mentioned. The Grevis family had acquired the lordship of Yardley from 1629.

Edinburgh Previews:

Moseley Comedy Festival Having lived in Edinburgh for two years and grown up on a solid diet of Father Ted, Shooting Stars, and The Fast Show, I am somewhat of a comedy enthusiast.

I’ve always been pleased that Moseley has the Cheeky Monkey night. A free comedy evening that was monthly and is now every fortnight. We also have the Glee Club a bus ride away.

I saw two of the four nights. I sat in a full house each time, and each night brought something different. Some work was very polished and some was rougher but to my eyes it was all wonderful to see. Similar to seeing a prototype, like walking in on a smiling James Dyson sticking a football on a hoover, it feels good to be in at the beginning.

In Edinburgh, outside of work, the month of August meant sun, long evenings, and copious friends visiting. I’m not sure why they all came in August…of yeah, the Fringe and lots of comedy.

For me, seeing live comedy outside of established favourites, (by the time this is published I will have once again seen my favourite, and comedy crush, Josie Long), is about rolling the dice. I try and convince friends of this regularly. It’s about supporting people doing something really brave. I’ve not done comedy but deciding to perform live is exciting, thrilling and you need to support it. So it’s exciting

and experimental. You have the chance to witness something brand new and brilliant.

They may fall but unless you sit there, then you never give people the chance to fly, and performers never know how good or funny something is until they leave their bedroom mirror and stand in front of people. If brave souls didn’t try we’d only have Roy Chubby Brown to listen to.

On Sunday we learnt that if you’re going to forget a line then run with it. Gary Colman did! Buoyed, hopefully, by his ability to keep us entertained despite forgetting the script, he will no doubt tighten his show in the coming weeks.

Iszi Lawrence, delivered an extended live version of her popular Z List Dead List podcast. As she sat with us after the show she was obviously feeling a bit frustrated.

You can’t get it all right first time. She was honest and open as she wants to build her podcast into a great live show. It has the promise of going down well at Edinburgh and I wish her well.

Nancy Dell’Olio. Edinburgh performers with the freedom of a whole show can aim for more narrative than a normal set, or they can share some important or big ideas. I felt it had the potential to be a really good show but it needed tightening and fine-tuning. As I say, that’s the point.

As for the night’s headliner, Sheraz Yousaf, he had a solid hour of gags and appeared confident in his set and himself. He kept the room, and of all the performers I saw is probably the most ready to go.

On Tuesday night, Diane Spencer was the opening act. Her show explored a twin-

It will be interesting to see in the future if we have the potential to use more venues, have shows in the daytime and add more dates. As a self-confessed comedy fan I’d like thank and congratulate the performers and the organisers for a great little festival.

Moseley Garden I want to turn readers’ attention to planting some real glamour into their gardens... ...this summer in the form of ‘Glamourglads’ a relatively new range of Gladioli. March has always been the traditional time to start planting Gladioli corms and setting them in their flowering positions. It is best done sequentially through April as well to provide a long season of interest. In the past I have planted the corms all at one time resulting in two to three weeks of fabulous colour, but you can get colour from the end of June through to September if they are planted a week apart during the spring and early summer.

They haven’t quite become ‘de rigueur’ in British gardens yet but it won’t be long.

In my opinion Gladioli are very much the ‘tulip of the summer’. They are cheap to buy and available in a wide variety of colours and sizes. Traditionally gardeners would lift, dry and store the corms in winter but through recent cold winters, even 2011/2012, I have been leaving clumps out in the ground over winter. It seems that as long as they have been planted at a OUTDOORS

good depth and deeply mulched in winter, they have flowered reliably each summer since. Certainly this seems true where gardens are lucky enough to have good drainage and lighter soil. Apart from a few pockets of clay this is true for most of us in Moseley.

If you are unsure where to plant them, I set several batches in pots to grow on and then plant in the bed spaces that naturally appear after the first flush of summer flowering plants comes and goes.

Plant in groups of 3 or 5 rather than in random singularities. Plant them deep in the soil 10 -15 cm at least; this seems to stop the heavy flower spike falling over and amongst other herbaceous plants and shrubs. The memory of either single or lines of tall Gladioli, usually in mixed and highly uncomplimentary colour combinations fighting against the bamboo canes used by desperate gardeners to prop them up still horrifies me.

What does your neighbourhood sound like?

Moseleyb a s e d musician and producer, Bobbie-Jane Gardner and her team of professional musicians are gearing up for a music tour of library spaces called 'What does your neighbourhood sound like?'

remained as simply an idea for some time before I had the courage to share it with others.”

Bobbie wanted to create a musical ode to her hometown that celebrates its diverse communities and is inclusive in someway, so the for-Wards team ran a series of field recording workshops in Balsall Heath, Newtown and Small Heath and invited the community to take part, with the aim of encouraging the local communities to listen and identify sounds they feel hold a significance to where they live.

From a Sikh Temple in Balsall Heath to rustling of leaves in Small Heath Park and the sound of an African church choir in Newtown, the compositions are directly inspired by the people living in the wards.

The tour funded by Arts Council England and Sound and Music, is part of a community based music project called for-Wards which is part of a larger ambition to create 40 pieces of new music inspired by Birmingham’s 40 electoral wards.

A stellar line up of professional musicians, who all share a Birmingham conservatoire musical education, will perform three new compositions by each composer, alongside amplified field recordings.

Brian Parsons, club, sound system and live music promoter, aka Zuppa Inglese has died, after a long illness.

He had suffered a brain tumour. Many will remember his Bongo Go, club nights, which provided the soundtrack of many hours of dancing at the Moseley Dance Centre.

He never lost his political commitment and remained a friend of equality and justice all his life.

Asphalt Nightmares

School Road. Potholes featured in June and November issues have been fixed but surely it would have made better sense to repair the holes on other parts of School Road, where it meets Wake Green Road as well as the new hole that has appeared at its junction with Oxford Road?

It was in our September 14 issue that I last turned my jaundiced eyes to the state of local roads.

I am by nature a positive soul so let me start with the ‘good’ news. At the time of going to press a programme of resurfacing works were about to start on Alcester Road.

It will mean disruption in the short term but hopefully the improved quality of the road surface will have made it all worth it…

Trafalgar Road

Trafalgar Road. I got really excited when I saw a couple of men fixing the pavement. I thought, ‘surely they’ll fix the pot holes at the same time’. No. Anybody driving along Trafalgar Road not only has to avoid the creative parking but also the holes pictured here. This hole could not only unseat a cyclist but cause serious damage to a car.

Sandford Road

And staying with the issue of quality: the potholes in Sandford Road that were first featured in our June 14 issue have been mended. But I would suggest the powers that be, examine the quality of the repair.

We do get some funny looks when we are out and about taking pictures for this piece. People are curious and one householder offered to sign a petition to get the roads repaired if one were to start.

You will see from our picture no seal was applied to marry the edge patch to the surrounding existing surface and new holes has appeared. Not sure if their appearance is linked to the lack of seal.

I admit that I have been banging on about the state of the roads to friends and relatives. My de facto brother in law told me about an app, Street Bump, that is being trialled in Boston USA. There, they have a Mayor's Office of New Urban Mechanics. Who knew? Anyway, the role of this office is to help residents improve their neighbourhood’s streets.

Further along Sandford Road other holes seem to have been overlooked by the repair team and indeed they have gotten worse since we first featured Asphalt Nightmares. It strikes me that it would have made more sense to repair them at the same time as they are within 100 meters of each other.

As users drive, the mobile app collects data about the smoothness of the ride; that data provides the City with real-time information it uses to fix problems and plan long-term investments. Now there’s a thought: planned long-term investment in our infrastructure…

St Alban’s Road and Tyndal Street! What can I say? Nothing has changed there and Edgbaston East is going the same way.

Billesley Lane has come to my attention with its holes at its busy junction with Wake Green Road.

The Little Unsaid come to the Ort Café

The Little Unsaid was stewed up in the badlands of West Yorkshire by multiinstrumentalist, producer and writer John Elliott. The music combines string and brass orchestration with beats, electronics, found sounds and John's haunting, androgynous vocals.

The new album Fisher King is due for release in summer 2015. The album is being mixed by Graeme Stewart, Oxfordbased producer who has produced Jonny Greenwood’s music for such blockbuster movies as There Will Be Blood, The Master and this year’s Inherent Vice, lending the album its distinct cinematic sound. The album features regular collaborators the Southfields String Quartet as well as violin by Giles Lewin, founding member of Bellowhead and regular Maddy Prior collaborator. As with all previous releases, John plays drums, guitars, piano, electronics, toolbox and sings on the album, and arranges all of the parts for other musicians. Inspiration behind the songs on the album comes from a range of literary works including Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, Dante’s Inferno, The Death of Bunny Munro by Nick Cave and The Waste Land by T.S. Born Again Beatles Kings Heath Walk of Fame presented Beatles Fest 2015 over the Valentines weekend. The date marked the 52nd anniversary of the Fab Four’s performance at the Ritz Ballroom in 1963 shortly after releasing their second single “Please Please Me”. Legend has it that they had to enter the Ballroom via a ladder from Milford Place at the rear of the venue to avoid the screaming fans, and that George Harrison was trapped by said fans when he arrived

and entertained with lively exchanges.

Although despite ongoing encouragement to the audience to throw knickers on stage, the only flying underwear was a lone sock!

The audience was a great mixture of original fans who loved the Beatles the first time round, and younger fans enjoying the timeless tunes. The Hare and Hounds stage gave the feeling of the smoky Cavern Club in the 1960s (although since the smoking ban this does have to be achieved using a smoke machine!). The evening ended with a rousing rendition of “Hey Jude”.

The gig was held to raise money towards purchasing the old Ritz Ballroom site on York Road that burnt down in 2013 in order to build on it a new Ritz Community Arts Centre and Pop History Museum. The weekend of events also included an acoustic session at Fletchers featuring local musicians playing their favourite Beatles songs.

Anti-Social Behaviour Meeting

Moseley Forum and Moseley Community Alcohol Partnership (MCAP) held a lively and informative public meeting on 5th February to discuss the future for responding to anti-social behaviour in Moseley, now that the Section 222 Injunction ended in October 2014.

Jones representing the new Birmingham substance misuse service due to commence in April, emphasised that it is important to provide holistic treatment for individuals to ensure that real change is brought about for them.

MCAP encourage people to donate to Moseley Alternative Giving rather than giving directly to people who beg.

Donating to the campaign enables local services like SIFA Fireside to support people by meeting their immediate needs such as food or clothing, and refer them to services that can help them move to a more stable lifestyle by helping them find accommodation or support with mental health issues.

Sergeant O'Keeffe of Moseley & Kings Heath Neighbourhood Police Team and Oliver Humpidge of Birmingham Community Safer Partnership updated on their application for a Public Places Protection Notice for Moseley, which could last up to three years, to help restrict street drinking begging and rough sleeping. The team need specific examples from residents and businesses of how these issues affect and impact them, including dates and times. It is envisaged that the PSPO will have a similar impact to the Section 222; providing a supportive approach to addressing ASB issues with individuals.

Council considering charging for parking at the MAC The Cannon Hill property formed part of the extensive Birmingham estates of Miss Louisa Ann Ryland (1814-89) of Barford Hill House, Warwickshire, and the descendent of a prominent 18th century Birmingham family. In April 1873 Miss Ryland presented some 57 acres at Cannon Hill to the Corporation; she also paid for the draining of the site, and

its laying out and planting as a public park. The park was designed and laid out by John Gibson (1815-75), who had trained under Joseph Paxton (1803-65) at Chatsworth, Derbyshire (Paxton had designed the Great Exhibition of 1862).

In 1858 Gibson had designed Battersea Park, London and oversaw many gardens such as at Kensington Gardens, Hyde Park and St James’s Park. On its opening Miss Ryland gave everyone a card expressing

After the 2nd world war Cannon Hill Park was adopted as Birmingham's Premier Park. It's also Grade II* along with the Canon Hill House which is Moseley and so officially the park is in Moseley although the MAC is B12 because of where the main entrance is.

Looking ahead Liz is currently looking at venues in Moseley or Kings Heath to set up a weekly family history class to commence in the Autumn. As she explained “There are now so many records becoming available online it can be hard sometimes for experienced, let alone novice, researchers to see the wood for the trees. I enjoy helping folks focus on the records they need; how to find them, whether that be online or in the archives and how to interpret them when they do”.

Liz graduated in 2013 with a Postgraduate Diploma in Genealogical, Palaeographic and Heraldic Studies from the University of Strathclyde and has 9 years of experience working in Archives and Heritage at the Library of Birmingham.

Since graduating she has been delivering her own series of family history workshops at the Library in addition to undertaking genealogical research for a range of clients. The pair did the morning shift at the Moseley café after Jo tweeted that she needed another job to help fill her day.

At the Prince we have a good selection of single malts with about 30 different presentations on the bar. My favourite is the smoky, peaty dram that is Talisker Distillers Edition from the Isle of Skye.

Some of our staff prefer the sweeter notes of Speyside whilst we have a few more mature customers who love the almost medicinal qualities of the Islay malts.

In fact, once Ken was a good way through his speech, and his whisky, he became the only Chancellor in history to reduce the tax on whisky. He did this in two successive years in the mid 1990’s. So we must ask, was this Government Policy or just the whisky talking?

The Budget will be delivered on Wednesday March 18th. When it comes to politicians, one of my favourite “drink” related stories concerns ex Moseley resident, former Chancellor and Prince of Wales customer Ken Clarke.

So what will George Osbourne be drinking come Budget Day? Who knows but let’s hope he helps the British brewing industry by cutting the duty on beer. Now I’ll drink to that.

It’s well known that Ken loves his beer, jazz and cigars, but he is also a whisky fan and his favourite tipple is Glenfarclas a 30 year, single malt we keep on the bar at the Prince.

MPs are not allowed to drink in the chamber of The House of Commons. The only exception to this, given the historical length of the speech, is for the Chancellor on Budget Day.

Police Update We are pleased to report that crime in the ward is down on the same period last year – 120 fewer crimes which represent a fall of 6.8 per cent.

• Operation Engage continues to gather momentum across the ward. The team is focusing on gathering evidence on beggars and street drinkers causing antisocial behaviour. Several warning letters have been served, referrals for support made and the most prolific Moseley beggar will soon be appearing in court to be considered for a civil injunction.

• Following some good investigative work by the team and information from the local community we believe we have identified one of the males who has been knocking at doors across the ward and asking for money to get home after giving a number of “stories”. The matter is ongoing.

This has all been made possible thanks to support from partners including SIFA Fireside, local businesses, Birmingham Safer Community Partnership, our Neighbourhood Wardens and members of the local community who have kindly provided statements of evidence.

• There have been five house burglaries in the area, two in Moorcroft Road one each in Amesbury, Goodby and Salisbury Roads. In Moorcroft the burglars forced entry through ground floor patio doors however nothing was stolen.

If you have evidence of any individual causing anti-social behaviour, please email us or call 101 to report it. These accounts are essential in these applications and more first-hand experiences from the public help us present stronger more detailed case to the courts.

• The occupant scared off an individual in Amesbury Road. Offenders failed to gain entry to the property in Goodby Road and although the front door was damaged. And in Salisbury Road the offenders forced open the back door and searched the property; fortunately nothing was taken.

Please don’t give money to beggars and consider giving money to the Moseley Alternative Giving Scheme instead.

Our CID and the forensic teams are following lines of enquiry and reassuring the victims. We would like to remind you to please be vigilant with regards to home security.
