Celebrating Our 10th

“ This milestone season for Mosaic was a celebratory moment of reflecting upon our company’s remarkable 10-year history while looking ahead to our future with renewed inspiration and purpose. We invited artists who have built the organization’s reputation for creative excellence back home, re-investigated themes core to the company’s vision of putting community at the heart of our work, and welcomed exciting new local and national voices to Mosaic and DC for the first time.”

Mosaic Theater took audience members back to 1959 for an unforgettable rendezvous with Lady Day herself—the incomparable Billie Holiday performed by DC legend Roz White. Presented in partnership with Washington Performing Arts.

AUDIENCE REACTIONS

“A singular piece of art that has moved me the most in my life. The final scene felt like a loving hug from a dear friend. ”

“The Art of Care was absolutely breathtaking–profoundly moving–loved this production–will encourage everyone to attend!”

Photo:

Conceived and Directed

An uplifting celebration of our local community from a global perspective! An all-star D.C. cast courageously invited audiences into their own worlds. Their riveting stories, combined with the voices of caregivers, medical professionals, and everyday people, created a deeply personal and universally resonant theatrical event.

Produced in partnership with The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University and developed in collaboration with The Global Health Institute, School of Health, School of Nursing, Medstar Health, and Medical Humanities Initiative at Georgetown University.

SPONSORS

The Art of Care was dedicated to Dan & Gloria Logan and supported by the Revada Foundation of the Logan Family of Virginia, Georgetown University, Kaiser Permanente, and Partners Circle Visionaries the Steinglass Family Fund, Champions Dr. Bill & Evelyn Braithwaite, Believers Frank & Emily Vogl, Advocates Steven Clay & Mike Smith, Mimi Conway & Dennis Houlihan, Ed Grossman & Rochelle Stanfield, Craig Pascal, Stephen Stern & Margaret Hahn Stern, and Rosa Wiener.

PRESS

“ A tremendously heartfelt and affecting world premiere. Almost entirely crafted from the perspectives of its seven-member ensemble, whose radical vulnerability is its marvelous lifeblood. The show also makes a persuasive argument about the equivalence of art and care. Both encourage recognition of another person’s perspective. Any time, but especially now, what could be more valuable?”

–The Washington Post

“ The Art of Care was more than a performance; it was a catharsis. It asked us not only to witness but to participate and acknowledge that caring for one another might just be the most powerful story we can share.”

–The 51st

cullud wattah

AUDIENCE REACTIONS

“The production cullud wattah was powerful and disturbing. Well done, and thank you for picking this play to do!”

“[Mosaic] is the top, most reverberant place to experience theater that resonates a social conscience–highly intelligent, deeply felt, and deftly executed. Thank you so much.”

Kelly Renee Armstrong and Andreá Bellamore. Photo by Chris Banks.

Set in 2016, cullud wattah explores the Flint, Michigan, water crisis through the experiences of one family.

FROM ART TO ACTION

“[...] We decided to provide each homeowner with a purification system, to filter out lead in cooking and drinking water. […] If it wasn’t for the deeply moving experience presented in cullud wattah, I’m not sure we would have made this decision. [...] Thank you for having the courage and wisdom to bring this production to our city.”

Andy Warhol in Iran

AUDIENCE REACTIONS

“This is what great theatre is meant to do.”

“Mosaic Theater has been a wonderful new discovery and experience. It’s a gem among the many DC area theaters.”

Nathan Mohebbi and Alex Mills.

In 1976, less than three years before her exile, the Empress Farah beckons Andy Warhol to begin pop-art portraits of the royals in Tehran. A fictionalized account of Andy Warhol’s real-life trip to Iran, Andy Warhol in Iran imagines Warhol being taken hostage by an Iranian revolutionary. A life-or-death struggle then ensues over revolution, responsibility and the arts. Award-winning playwright Brent Askari affirms the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect across cultures and time.

PRESS

“ A deep dive into Warhol’s carefully curated persona, a ritual celebration of the art form’s theoretical virtues— empathy, compassion and love.”

–The Washington Post

“ A heartfelt story! [Director Serge Seiden] hits every beat and then some. [He] deftly highlights the comedic moments without sacrificing the gravitas of the story and its subtext. While the story may be fictional, the history is fascinating.”

New Play Development

“ Mosaic’s commitment to new play development has yielded impactful work and meaningful collaborations. Through deep listening and a creative approach to producing, we uniquely tailor each process to the vision for each project and the artists at the helm.”

PRECARIOUS

In December 2024, Mosaic hosted a developmental workshop (pictured above with actors Terrance Fleming and Mishy Jacobson) and reading of Steph Del Rosso’s Precarious as part of its Community-Engaged Theater Fund at the DC Public Library Northeast branch. This Fund supports the development of new work that brings artists and community members together and furthers conversations on social justice, racial diversity, and the importance of community.

See Mosaic’s full production of Precarious beginning June 4, 2026. The Community-Engaged Theater Fund is supported by the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Eugene M. Lang Foundation and Ken Grossinger & Micheline Klagsbrun.

TRISH VRADENBURG NEW PLAY COMMISSION: 7TH STREET ECHO

Written and Directed by Paige Hernandez

In January 2025, Mosaic hosted a developmental workshop and reading of 7th Street Echo by Paige Hernandez, a Trish Vradenburg New Play Commission Recipient. Mosaic first began exploring the concept of 7th Street Echo with Paige in 2019, harnessing our artist-centered approach and responding to her needs. Mosaic officially commissioned the work tailored to her creative process in 2022.

This hyper-local, intergenerational story is rooted in the legacy of go-go and street drumming in Washington, DC.

THE REFLECTION SERIES

Mosaic’s innovative year-round Reflections Series harnessed the power of art to inspire connection, learning, and community action. In Season 10, we worked with dozens of partners to host special events that connected artists, playwrights, local leaders, issue experts, and community members from all 8 DC wards and across the region. We also hired our first-ever Education and Engagement Manager, Jacob Ettkin (photo top left), who has lead the programming and helped Mosaic expand our partnerships.

SPONSORS EDUCATION AND ENGAGEMENT programs were supported by Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, Nora Roberts Foundation, and Mosaic Partners Circle Champions Frank Guzzetta & Paul Manville. THE REFLECTION SERIES was supported by Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, and Partners Circle Visionaries Cathy & Bob Solomon, Champions Ken Grossinger & Micheline Klagsburn, Believers Leslie Scallet Lieberman & Maury Lieberman (of blessed memory), and Activists John & Meg Hauge. THE INTERGENERATIONAL MATINEE PROGRAM was supported by AARP, Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Events DC, Mayor’s Office of LGBTQ Affairs, and Partners Circle Advocates Janet & Robert Wittes. THE HIGH SCHOOL PLAYWRITING CONTEST was supported by Events DC, Partner Circle Champions Frank Guzzetta & Paul Manville Advocates Phyllis & Barry Caldwell, Leonade Jones, and was produced in collaboration with the DC Public Library.

INTERGENERATIONAL MATINEES

welcomed high school students and senior citizens for special performances during the school day, followed by interactive conversations with the shows’ artists.

“ I have had the honor of participating in [the Intergenerational Matinee] program, bringing my students to outstanding productions at Mosaic, completely free of charge. Each play we attended was not only artistically exceptional but also profoundly impactful for my students and me. These experiences have left an indelible mark on our collective appreciation for the arts and have provided invaluable learning opportunities outside the classroom walls.”

Schneeman, educator at Cardozo Education Campus

“ I’ve always wanted to write. I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller, and to have that verified, for someone to say ‘yes’ to me, it feels amazing.”

–Destiny Linus, 2025 Contest Winner

THE HIGH SCHOOL PLAYWRITING CONTEST

provided opportunities for high school students to embrace their creativity, grow as theater-makers, and explore topics that are important to them and their community. Mosaic offered handson mentorship to help them write original plays, and the contest culminated in a public reading of the winning plays by professional actors at the DC Public Library’s Martin Luther King Jr. branch.
