Mosaic Theater took audience members back to 1959 for an unforgettable rendezvous with Lady Day herself—the incomparable Billie Holiday performed by DC legend Roz White. Lady Day at Emerson’s Bar and Grill explores the triumphs and traumas of Holiday’s life and career while celebrating the resilience of Black women throughout history.
Presented in partnership with Washington Performing Arts.

“A singular piece of art that has moved me the most in my life. The final scene felt like a loving hug from a dear friend. ”
“The Art of Care was absolutely breathtaking–profoundly moving–loved this production–will encourage everyone to attend!”
Conceived and Directed
by Derek Goldman
An uplifting celebration of our local community from a global perspective! An all-star D.C. cast courageously invited audiences into their own worlds. Their riveting stories, combined with the voices of caregivers, medical professionals, and everyday people, created a deeply personal and universally resonant theatrical event.
Produced in partnership with The Laboratory for Global Performance and Politics at Georgetown University and developed in collaboration with The Global Health Institute, School of Health, School of Nursing, Medstar Health, and Medical Humanities Initiative at Georgetown University.

The Art of Care was dedicated to Dan & Gloria Logan and supported by the Revada Foundation of the Logan Family of Virginia, Georgetown University, Kaiser Permanente, and Partners Circle Visionaries the Steinglass Family Fund, Champions Dr. Bill & Evelyn Braithwaite, Believers Frank & Emily Vogl, Advocates Steven Clay & Mike Smith, Mimi Conway & Dennis Houlihan, Ed Grossman & Rochelle Stanfield, Craig Pascal, Stephen Stern & Margaret Hahn Stern, and Rosa Wiener.

“ A tremendously heartfelt and affecting world premiere. Almost entirely crafted from the perspectives of its seven-member ensemble, whose radical vulnerability is its marvelous lifeblood. The show also makes a persuasive argument about the equivalence of art and care. Both encourage recognition of another person’s perspective. Any time, but especially now, what could be more valuable?”
–The Washington Post
“ The Art of Care was more than a performance; it was a catharsis. It asked us not only to witness but to participate and acknowledge that caring for one another might just be the most powerful story we can share.”
–The 51st

“The production cullud wattah was powerful and disturbing. Well done, and thank you for picking this play to do!”
“[Mosaic] is the top, most reverberant place to experience theater that resonates a social conscience–highly intelligent, deeply felt, and deftly executed. Thank you so much.”
By Erika Dickerson-Despenza
Directed by Danielle A. Drakes
Set in 2016, cullud wattah explores the Flint, Michigan, water crisis through the experiences of one family.

“[...] We decided to provide each homeowner with a purification system, to filter out lead in cooking and drinking water. […] If it wasn’t for the deeply moving experience presented in cullud wattah, I’m not sure we would have made this decision. [...] Thank you for having the courage and wisdom to bring this production to our city.”
-Audrey Lyon, Executive Director Yachad
cullud wattah was supported by Partners Circle Visionaries David O. & Joan P. Maxwell, Believers Dianne & Herbert Lerner and Cathy MacNeil-Hollinger & Mark Hollinger, Advocates Jeffrey & Stacie Lee Banks, Robert & Irene Harriet Blum, Debbie Goldman, Sari Hornstein, and Stephanie Phillips & George Murray.

“ One of the most urgent and satisfying pieces of theater on DC stages now.”
–DC Theater Arts
“ A must-see! A searing indictment of environmental racism, a testament to Black resilience, and a spiritual reckoning, all in one. Bold design, and visionary direction.”
–MD Theatre Guide

“This is what great theatre is meant to do.”
“Mosaic Theater has been a wonderful new discovery and experience. It’s a gem among the many DC area theaters.”
By Brent Askari
Directed by Serge Seiden
In 1976, less than three years before her exile, the Empress Farah beckons Andy Warhol to begin pop-art portraits of the royals in Tehran. A fictionalized account of Andy Warhol’s real-life trip to Iran, Andy Warhol in Iran imagines Warhol being taken hostage by an Iranian revolutionary. A life-or-death struggle then ensues over revolution, responsibility and the arts. Award-winning playwright Brent Askari affirms the power of art to transcend boundaries and connect across cultures and time.

“ A deep dive into Warhol’s carefully curated persona, a ritual celebration of the art form’s theoretical virtues— empathy, compassion and love.”
–The Washington Post
“ A heartfelt story! [Director Serge Seiden] hits every beat and then some. [He] deftly highlights the comedic moments without sacrificing the gravitas of the story and its subtext. While the story may be fictional, the history is fascinating.”
-MD Theatre Guide
Andy Warhol in Iran was supported by Partners Circle Believers Deborah Carliner & Robert Remes, Activists Julie & David Zalkind, Advocates Nancy C. Beckley, David Alan Grier & Jean Grier, Julie Rios, Michael Singer & James Smith, Myrna Sislen & Bill Rice, and Dr. Frances & Tom Wills.
“ Mosaic’s commitment to new play development has yielded impactful work and meaningful collaborations. Through deep listening and a creative approach to producing, we uniquely tailor each process to the vision for each project and the artists at the helm.”
–Chelsea

This Fund supports the development of new work that brings artists and community members together and furthers conversations on social justice, racial diversity, and the importance of community.
See Mosaic’s full production of Precarious beginning June 4, 2026. The Community-Engaged Theater Fund is supported by the Capitol Hill Community Foundation, Eugene M. Lang Foundation and Ken Grossinger & Micheline Klagsbrun.

Mosaic officially commissioned the work tailored to her creative process in 2022.
This hyper-local, intergenerational story is rooted in the legacy of go-go and street drumming in Washington, DC.

“ I have had the honor of participating in [the Intergenerational Matinee] program, bringing my students to outstanding productions at Mosaic, completely free of charge. Each play we attended was not only artistically exceptional but also profoundly impactful for my students and me. These experiences have left an indelible mark on our collective appreciation for the arts and have provided invaluable learning opportunities outside the classroom walls.”
–Caity

“ I’ve always wanted to write. I’ve always wanted to be a storyteller, and to have that verified, for someone to say ‘yes’ to me, it feels amazing.”
–Destiny Linus, 2025 Contest Winner
