Letter from the Editor This semester, along with everything that’s occurred within the past year, has been a time for reflecting on what we know to be true and how we can change it for the better. Mosaic’s experimental nature has allowed us to take active steps to better not only ourselves, but the work we produce, and it all starts with our latest issue “Piece By Piece.” Change is a process, not a switch that can be flipped on a whim, so taking steps to actively change and better the work done as a team starts with this issue. In past semesters, a lot of what we covered didn’t truly capture the student experience to the fullest extent. I’m proud that as a result, the stories we tackled this semester looked into often overlooked or unnoticed campus communities, bringing new perspectives and experiences to the forefront of Mosaic. Piece by piece, the stories covered this semester began to frame a new vision of what Mosaic can look like for the future. From covering the history of LGBTQ+ organizations on the University’s campus and the struggles the pandemic has brought on the Deaf and hard of hearing community to the impact the pandemic has had on programs like Alabama Repertory Dance Theatre and study abroad, this issue of Mosaic only touches the surface on all that it can cover moving forward. In a year as challenging and frustrating as this one, I am truly so grateful for the commitment and intent every contributor and editor has put into making this issue happen. Plenty of late nights and extensive edits brought us to this point, and I can’t thank this team enough for enduring through an already difficult time to be a student to produce a magazine of this caliber. Without further ado, I’m beyond proud to publish “Piece By Piece,” the Spring 2021 issue of Mosaic. I’m so grateful to have had the opportunity to learn and grow during my time in Mosaic and I hope you all enjoy this incredible issue.
