These were among the items in the first drone delivery on US soil approved by aviation officials, made by convenience retailer 7-Eleven and the drone startup Flirtey. The delivery took place yesterday in Reno, Nevada, with the items loaded into a special box for hot and cold food and flown to a local family. "We're absolutely thrilled to have 7-Eleven, the largest convenience chain in the world, embracing new technologies and working with us at Flirtey to make drone delivery a reality for customers all over the world," said Flirtey chief executive Matt Sweeny. "This is just the first step in our collaboration with 7-Eleven. Flirtey's historic drone deliveries to date have been stepping stones distant future where we to store-to-home drone are delivering you convedelivery, and today is a gi- nience on demand." Others include US onant leap toward a not-too-

trend. Flirtey is also working with drones to deliver relief supplies as part of humanitarian missions around the world. But it also hopes to expand its partnership with 7-Eleven for convenience deliveries. Yesterday's delivery also included store candy and its Slurpee iced drinks. "Drone delivery is the ultimate convenience for our customers and these efforts create enormous opportunities to redefine convenience," said Jesus Delgado-Jenkins, the retailer's chief marketing officer. "This delivery marks the first time a retailer has worked with a drone delivery company to transport immediate consumables from store to home. In the future, we plan to make the entire assortment in our stores available for delivery to customers in minutes." The Federal Aviation Administration this year updated rules allowing for some commercial drone operations in US airspace.

munications giant Nokia is all set to make a smartphone comeback with two new Android 7.0 Nougat devices by the end of this year, a media report said on Saturday. The two unnamed devices will have premium metal designs complete with IP68 certification, which means they will be as water resistant as Samsung's Galaxy S7, The Inquirer reported. The smartphones may come up with 5.2-inch and 5.5-inch QHD screens, along with fingerprint scanner and "innovations" in the camera, the report noted. Both the smartphones are expected to feature

improved gaming thanks to support for the Vulkan API and could bring "elements of touch and hover interaction", hinting 3D Touch-like technology. The struggling company revealed in May that it licensed Finlandbased HMD to produce Nokia branded mobile phones and tablets. After acquiring Nokia's phone business for $7.2 billion two years ago, Microsoft wrote off $7.6 billion last year and cut 7,800 jobs to refocus its phone efforts. Microsoft's Lumia and Windows Phone strategy has failed as both sales and Windows Phone market share have declined since the tech giant's mobile restructuring last year.

neW Delhi, July 23 (Fe): Pokemon Go, the augmented reality game from Niantic Labs, has been creating hype since its inception, whether it is about privacy or the number of downloads, it appears that it will go on shattering records. Earlier, experts believed that the game will not break Facebook’s user base. But a Forbes report, citing 7Park Data said that the Pokemon Go is being used double the Facebook app on Android.

Developed by Andrew Jiang and his team at Andromium, the Superbook provides a large screen, keyboard and multi-touch trackpad, more than eight hours of battery and phone-charging capabilities. When plugged into Android smartphone, it launches an app to deliver the full laptop experience. According to Andrew, the app is essentially Android Continuum that lets you work seamlessly -- going from phone to notebook. "With the Superbook, you can do everything you can do on a laptop - and more. With desktop-class browsing, access to office applications, games, and even programming, the opportunities are limitless," Andromium said in its project description on Kickstarter.

neW Delhi, July 23 (the hinDu): The Centre is considering special incentives for States that take the lead in embracing the Aadhaar-based direct benefit transfer platform for delivering subsidies to the poor and succeed in saving taxpayer money by eliminating leakages. So far, the government has transferred Rs.1.02 lakh crore under 74 central schemes to about 30 crore beneficiaries through the direct benefit transfer or DBT system, resulting in huge savings, Union Electronics and Information Technology Minister Ravi Shankar Prasad said. “We have been able to save Rs.36,500 crore of State and Central government funds that was sought to be pilfered or taken away by those that were not entitled for it. If we could do this in the past two years, how many more thousands of crore would we save if we go for DBT in a big way?” Mr. Prasad asked, urging state governments to play a pro-active role. Detect fraud Cabinet Secretary P.K. Sinha said that the DBT regime has helped detect fraud and yielded significant savings for the exchequer, but needs to be scaled up across the country to realise its true potential. “A co-ordinated approach is needed be-

tween the Centre and the States to enable smooth transition of all schemes to DBT. The government is considering special incentives for those states that have done good work in terms of eliminating leakages and maximising savings through the use of Aadhaar-based DBT across schemes,” Mr. Sinha said. “Thus, a good part of the savings accruing from DBT implementation would be shared with the States.” The cabinet secretary, who has also written to State Chief Secretaries to adopt the DBT regime following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s request on the same lines to Chief Ministers at the recent Inter State Council Meeting, said that the DBT framework has led to increased public trust in government schemes and enhanced transparency and accountability. The law and IT minister asked State officials to champion the cause with their political bosses, and pointed out that even though the BJP had questioned the Aadhaar project

suggested that the casualty may be more for other android-based apps as the Pokemon Go was recently launched in Japan also. The data from the iOS users will also be interesting to look out for. “The takeaway? We’re spending 4.1% more time on our smartphones since Pokémon GO was released, but it’s at the expense of apps like YouTube and Snapchat. Spending two minutes less per day in popular apps like that may seem inconsequential, but

projected outward, globally, across both iOS and Android — and taking into account that Pokémon GO just launched in Japan — that could mean considerable advertising revenue is being lost. And I’m sure these apps aren’t the only casualties,” said the Forbes report. Earlier, Apple told TechCrunch that Pokemon GO has the most firstweek downloads since Apple launched their iOS app store eight years ago creating a record.

States to get sops based on Aadhaar’s DBT platform

Now, carry your office in your pocket neW york, July 23 (ians): A US-based startup has launched a smart laptop shell that turns your Android smartphone into a complete laptop -- making it more convenient and affordable for people in developing countries like India and South Africa to carry their office in their pocket, literally. The shell, called Superbook by Andromium Inc., makes an Android smartphone output look very much like a desktop environment. It is essentially a "dumb terminal"-- a notebook without a processor but with a keyboard, battery, trackpad and display, TreeHugger reported on Saturday. Andromium launched this ambitious product on Kickstarter -- a website "designed to bring creative projects to life" -- and is available at $99.

The report said that a user spent an average 75 minutes playing the Pokemon Go than 35 minute of Facebook app. Also, after the launch of Pokemon Go, the daily use of YouTube and Snapchat app dropped by 9 and 18 per cent respectively, as per 7Park data. But what could be a cheer for Facebook, the daily time spent on Facebook has gone up by 2 per cent from 33 to 35 since the launch of Pokemon Go. The Forbes report

during the Lok Sabha election campaign, it has embraced it after coming into power and taking a pragmatic look at its utility. “I always say there are politicians with an open mind if they are told what is right and wrong. Let me tell you, a lot of my friends in the party were sceptics about Aadhaar in their campaigning,” Mr. Prasad said. “Obviously, the PM is always open to new ideas and he could appreciate and realise the gamechanging potential of the Aadhar platform and the rest is history. How fast we have rolled it out and removed the bottlenecks facing it,” he said, referring to the 100 crore people

who now have Aadhaar numbers backed by a law. ‘Ideology neutral’ Prasad said, stressing that the DBT approach is ‘ideology neutral, Centre-State neutral, but only beneficiary positive.’ The Centre has requested States and union territories to set up DBT cells and set a deadline for union territories to dovetail their schemes with the DBT platform by September 30. States have been requested to adopt the DBT platform completely by March 2017. A national DBT portal, which will be an aggregator for all DBT schemes is also being unveiled.
