'England DNA' inspired by Germany, Belgium issued lOnDOn, DEcEMbER 5 (AP): The English Football Association released proposals on Thursday designed to enhance England's prospects which have been inspired by models from Germany and Belgium. The "England DNA" program will be rolled out to more than 1,500 coaches at the national team's St. George's Park base in central England. The FA hopes to create joined-up thinking along the pathway taking players from under-15s to the under-21s, with a view to eventual success for the senior side. As well as developing a similar playing philosophy, the plan focuses on ensuring players have pride in representing England, whose only major title came on home soil at the 1966 World Cup. The intention is for the program to keep evolving, and players will be given wristbands containing digital information from it to refer to when they are with their clubs. "It is very important we have a very clear idea of what principles we are going to follow and what we want

the players to be doing in different situations," England coach Roy Hodgson said. "We want to improve their awareness tactically and their game management. "All these types of thing are what I think is going to make England teams stronger going forward, and it is very much a coaching matter. The earlier we can get these messages across to the players and really bed them in, it should help the seniors when the players progress through the levels and arrive in that team." FA director of elite development Dan Ashworth said the organization conceived the plan after looking at rivals in Europe and South America. "It's really dangerous to copy another country, but it would be remiss of us not to look at some of the lessons other countries have had," Ashworth said. "Certainly, two that spring to mind are Belgium and Germany, who have had strong programs and leadership from their associations, and a clear direction. "In that respect it's similar ... but we do have a vision."

Australians not shy of bowling bouncers post Hughes tragedy

ADElAiDE, DEcEMbER 5 (Pti): Returning to the aggressive brand of cricket they are known for, Australian pacers on Friday showed no signs of shying away from bowling bouncers in the aftermath of Phillip Hughes' death as they held their first training session here since the tragedy. There was no shortage of bouncers as Australia's cricketers returned to training. For most players it was their first serious hit out since the Tuesday before last, when the buildup to the Commonwealth Bank Test series against India was put on hold after Hughes was fatally struck by a short ball at the Sydney Cricket Ground. Having farewelled their friend and teammate at an emotional service in Macksville on Wednesday, the Australian team returned their focus to onfield activities ahead of Tuesday's first Test against India here. And despite head coach Darren Lehmann's presession prediction that the players would "ease back into it", the fast-bowlers did not shy away from firing in the short balls, cricket.Com.Au reported. After some light-hearted drills to start the day ?- which included some dancing and an impromptu handstand from David Warner ?- Mitchell Johnson, Peter Siddle and Josh Hazlewood measured out their run ups in the middle of the picturesque Park 25 Cricket Ground here and began to charge in. Hazlewood looked the most lively of the trio, with the uncapped right-armer

Totti sets sights on Serie A scoring record

ROME, DEcEMbER 5 (REutERs): Francesco Totti turned 38 in September but Roma's leader still has two burning ambitions before he retires -- to lead the capital side to another Serie A title and overtake Silvio Piola as the league's all-time scorer. His angry reaction to being substituted during the second half of their home game against Torino last month showed that his passion and commitment still runs deep. "I'd be a liar if I said that I don't think about it (setting the goal record). I know it won't be easy, but nobody believed I could have scored as many goals I have," he wrote in the Corriere Dello Sport on Friday. Totti will hope to add to his tally when second-placed Roma host Sassuolo on Saturday. Totti has scored two goals so far in the league in nine games he has played this season and two more in the Champions League. He stands at 237 Serie A goals, 37 short of former Italy international Piola. In his last three seasons Totti

Abbott not ready for club cricket yet syDnEy, DEcEMbER 5 (Pti): Sean Abbott might have started his net sessions after overcoming the shock of bowling the fateful bouncer that took Phillip Hughes' life but the medium-pacer is not yet ready to return to competitive cricket, opting out of this weekends fixtures of Sydney grade competition. The 22-year-old, who rolled his arm over in the SCG nets at a New South Wales optional training session early this week, will not play in his club's clash with Northern Districts, according to Fairfax Media.

Sydney University are preparing for Abbott's absence but are leaving the option open if he does want to play come Saturday morning. Last weekend, all grade cricket was called off to mourn the loss of Hughes, but many clubs believe it is time to get back out there and dig in. The East Torrens Cricket Club, Hughes' Adelaide grade club, is holding a special tribute before their match against Sturt. An East Torrens official said no players had asked to sit out this week, including Hughes' state teammate Adam Zampa, who

was playing in the Sheffield Shield match when Hughes was hit. "Our club has had no one ask to sit out this week," an official was quoted as saying on 'Sydney Morning Herald'. "Players will always remember Phillip Hughes and playing in his memory is important for the club. Along the lines of Michael Clarke, our players players are ready to dig in and fight on to tea." All grade cricket teams are preparing to honour Hughes with 63-second silences, black armbands and painting his baggy green number 408 on the field.

SCG retires pitch where Hughes collapsed syDnEy, DEcEMbER 5 (Pti): Sydney Cricket Ground's Pitch No.7, the 22-yard strip on which Phillip Hughes fell after being fatally struck by a bouncer on head, has been retired. The wicket square at the SCG has 10 pitches. Hughes received his fatal blow on pitch No 7 and fell face-forward. He succumbed to the blow in the hospital a few days later, leaving the cricket-

forcing Shane Watson and then Chris Rogers to take swift action with a pair of lifting deliveries. Shaun Marsh ducked well to avoid a fast bouncer from Siddle while Warner also got in on the act late in the session, with his medium-pace pulled away by Brad Haddin. Not even brotherly love could get in the way, with a short ball from Mitchell Marsh forcing a false stroke from older brother Shaun, with the pair bidding to become the first brothers to play in the same Test for Australia since Steve and Mark Waugh in October 2002. It was far from a bounc-

ing world in shock. Curator Tom Parker told 'The Australian' that particular pitch on which Hughes was struck by a Sean Abbott bouncer would be getting the cold shoulder for a while. "Pitch No 7 has been retired," Parker said, as 3000 people converged on the SCG to watch the coverage of Hughes's funeral on the big screen on Wednesday.

er barrage, but it was enough to suggest that the tragic circumstances of Hughes's passing would not affect the on-field aggression that has long been Australia's trademark. "That's the way we've always played," Lehmann said before the session, adding that the playing group had expressed their desire to return to training. "We've had some success doing that and I don't see why that will change. "(We will play) normal Test cricket, good hard Test cricket like we always want to play as an Australian team. We've got to play a certain way, we know that,

"It breaks my heart, what's happened. This is the people's ground. It really is. Look at everyone here. I never thought I'd see someone die out here. I love this place. I love what it means to people," Parker said. "This old place has given us a lot of good memories. I'm shocked by what's happened. My staff are shocked. We won't be using that particular pitch for a long time," he said.

to get the best out of our players and ourselves and our team," he said. Ryan Harris did not bowl with his three fastbowling teammates, instead starting the session with a hit in the nets before he later bowled off his full run out in the middle. It was yet another positive sign for the 35-year-old, who yesterday declared himself a certain starter for his first Test match since undergoing major knee surgery in March. While the players seemed to relish a return to the training track, Lehmann was taking a cautious approach when asked if

they would be ready for the heat of a Test match so soon after farewelling their mate. Due to the unprecedented circumstances, Lehmann said it was hard to predict how his team would perform in what will be an emotional Test at Hughes's adopted home ground, the Adelaide Oval. "Until we get out there come 10.30 on Tuesday, we'll know then," Lehmann said. "It's never been dealt with before. It's obviously going to be a big challenge for us. But having said that getting out there playing some cricket, that's the key," he said.

has been able to suck on his thumb, his unique way of celebrating goals, 28 times. At current pace, he would have to play four more seasons, including this one, to realistically have a shot at Piola, who scored 143 of his goals for Roma's rivals, Lazio, between 1934 and 1943. "There are no secrets to my longevity," Totti said. "I lead a professional life and my desire to keep playing is the same I had when I started." Totti hopes that Roma's new stadium will be ready by 2016. "It would be a dream come true to set the record there," he said.

i d d i c k B ow e, who beat undisputed champion Evander Holyfield for the heavyweight boxing title in 1992, and popular lightweight champion Ray "Boom Boom" Mancini have been selected for induction into the International Boxing Hall of Fame. Also selected were featherweight champion "Prince" Naseem Hamed of England, light flyweight champion Yoko Gushiken of Japan, manager Rafael Mendoza of Mexico, referee Steve Smoger, journalist Nigel Collins of England, and broadcaster Jim Lampley. Posthumous honorees include Japanese flyweight Masao Ohba, U.S. middleweight Ken Overlin, and U.S. publicist John F.X. Condon. Inductees were selected by the Boxing Writers Association and a panel of international boxing historians. The induction ceremony will be on June 14 at the Hall of Fame in upstate New York. Bowe became the undisputed champ after beating Holyfield for the three major crowns. One of 13 siblings who grew up in poverty in Brooklyn, Bowe somehow made his way to the pinnacle of the sport. He won his first 31 fights to get a shot at the title, knocking out all but two of them. He fought only 10 times after beating Holyfield in the first of their three memorable bouts, and won nine of them. But it was evident his career was declining when he had to get up off the canvas to stop Holyfield in their final meeting. Bowe retired in December 1996 with a 43-1 (33 KOs) pro record after taking a second straight beating from Andrew Golota, although he won both fights because Golota hit him with low blows. Mancini followed his father, Lenny, into boxing and turned pro in 1979. In 1982, he scored a first-round knockout of Arturo Frias to win the WBA lightweight title.

Though his career was brief, the popular Mancini had a profound impact. In November 1982, he defended his title against Duk Koo Kim of South Korea at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas in an outdoor bout televised live. Mancini scored a knockout in the 14th round, but Kim suffered brain injuries that led to his death four days later. The WBA immediately shortened its title fights to 12 rounds, and by 1990 all sanctioning organizations followed suit. But Kim's death had a negative impact on the sport's popularity. Mancini also made successful defenses against Ernesto Espana, Orlando Romero and Hall of Famer Bobby Chacon before los-

ing the title to Livingstone Bramble in 1984, and in the rematch the next year. He officially retired in 1992 with a pro record of 29-5 (23 KOs). Hamed learned to box at 7 and turned pro in 1992. In the ensuing decade, he captured bantamweight, super bantamweight and featherweight titles and had an impressive string of 15 successful title defenses before retiring in 2002 with a pro record of 36-1 (31 KOs). The Tokyo-born Ohba turned pro in 1966 and compiled a 25-2-1 record before winning the WBA flyweight championship in 1970. He successfully defended the title five times over the next three years and in his lone bout outside his homeland, stopped Rocky Garcia in

the ninth round in the United States. His last fight was a successful title defense over Thailand's Chartchai Chionoi in January 1973. Three weeks later, he died at 23 from injuries suffered in an automobile accident, finishing with a pro record of 35-2-1 (16 KOs). Overlin learned to box in the U.S. Navy and turned pro in 1931. Perhaps his finest moment was a 10-round victory over future heavyweight king Ezzard Charles. He retired in 1944 with a record of 135-19-9-2NC (23 KOs) and died in 1969. Condon served as vice president and president of MSG Boxing in 1981 and was matchmaker and commentator for fights on the MSG Network. He died in 1989.
