Sources informed that following Rio’s resignation, Chief Minister-designate TR Zeliang; NPF President, Dr. Shurhozelie Liezietsu and Minister for Parliamentary Affairs, Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu will meet Governor of Nagaland on May 23 to stake claim to install the new ministry. However, the time is yet to be known. Speaking to media persons, Azo said that the formation of the new DAN III ministry might take place on May 23 evening after Rio tenders his resignation or on May 24 morning, followed by the simultaneous induction of all parliamentary secretaries. He added
that the formation of the new DAN-III ministry will be done in consultation with the present Chief Minister, Neiphiu Rio. Meanwhile, it is reported that the legislators supporting TR Zeliang had a meeting at the residence of the NPF president here today and decided that the members would stand by whatever the party and the leader (TR Zeliang) decide. On being asked about his expectations on the new DAN III ministry, Azo said that reformation of the governing system will be one of its priorities. “We want to provide a better, stronger, cleaner and stable government,” he said. Azo
reiterated that the present government has been doing a good job but said that there is still a lot of room for improvement. On his expectations from Rio, Azo said that since he (Rio) has taken up greater a responsibility “our expectation is very high.” “He will come to the rescue of the government, especially on financial matters. He will be our main advisor because we need expertise like him who has knowledge in governing the government,” said Azo. Azo further expressed optimism that under Rios’s leadership, the Naga political issue will also be expedited.

An opportunity to Sharmila wishes to meet Modi over AFSPA Nagaland tops in LS ‘Iron lady’ optimistic that new re-introspect: nPcc voter turnout government will repeal the Act
KohIMA, MAY 22 (MExN): The Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee today reiterated its commitment to the people of Nagaland and to “always carry out the bounden duty of a responsible political party to serve and meet the aspirations of the people in the days ahead.” This was resolved in a meeting of the NPCC at Congress Bhavan, Kohima. A press note from the NPCC General Secretary, Vaprumu Demo stated that the meeting resolved to stand by the ideal and principle of the INC, which it said has “withstood the test of time in allowing secular and inclusive growth of all people irrespective of religion, caste, religion, region etc.” It further envisaged that the present electoral defeat for the Congress at the Center after a decade in power “presents an excellent opportunity for the party to re-introspect and change itself in tune with the aspirations of the people.” The NPCC called upon every Congress men and women of the state to rededicate oneself towards the ideal and principle of the INC and place the interest of the party above all other interest. The NPCC extended its appreciation to party rank and file at different levels who had worked during the
recently concluded Parliamentary Election to 16 Lok Sabha. It expressed gratitude to all party supporters who remained steadfast in their commitment in support of the INC Candidate, KV Pusa The NPCC further condemned what it termed as the “callous statement of the outgoing CM and MP elect Neiphiu Rio made before the BJP led NDA Parliamentary Meeting held in Central Hall on May 20.” “The very statement made by the Hon’ble MP that Nagaland and Northeastern state are a liability and not a contributor to the country is a complete reverse of what he has been proclaiming for the past 11 years and actually for which he got elected. For the sake of a ministerial berth the MP did not hesitate to sell the Naga identity at the first opportunity given to him,” the NPCC alleged. It added that the NPCC further holds Neiphiu Rio and the NPF government “fully responsible and accountable for the present state of huge liabilities incurred by the state during the last 11 years, despite the generosity of Congress UPA Govt for the past ten years through various central flagship schemes that were sanctioned irrespective of political party ruling the state.”
IMPhAl, MAY 22 (IANS): Activist Irom Chanu Sharmila, on a fast-unto-death since the past 10 years against alleged rights violations by security forces, wants to meet Prime Minister-designate Narendra Modi to secure his help in getting AFSPA repealed in Manipur, her lawyer said Thursday. “She has expressed a desire to meet Prime Minister(-designate) Narendra Modi to highlight the sufferings of the people through the imposition of AFSPA (Armed Forces Special Powers Act) in Manipur and in other northeastern states as well,” Sharmila’s counsel Khaidem Mani told IANS. “We will seek an appointment
with the prime minister. We are hopeful that the prime minister would give Sharmila an audience to listen to her. Sharmila is optimist that the new government will surely heed her words and repeal AFSPA from Manipur,” he said. Sharmila, described as the ‘Iron Lady of Manipur’, has been on an indefinite hunger strike since Nov 2, 2000 in Manipur, demanding the withdrawal of AFSPA from the state after witnessing the killing of 10 people by the army at a bus stop near her home. Sharmila will be flown
to New Delhi May 27 and will be presented before the metropolitan magistrate the next day. She would be accompanied by a doctor, two nurses, a women police team and two jail officials. She, meanwhile, indicated her support for the Aam Admi Party while rejecting Manipur Chief Minister Okram Ibobi Singh’s offer for her to join the Congress. Several human rights groups, including the North East Students’ Organisation, have also been demanding withdrawal of AFSPA. Amnesty International has
campaigned vociferously against the law. However, army officials maintain that it was for the central and the state governments to decide whether to revoke or continue AFSPA. Human Rights Alert - an Imphal-based rights group - is not confident that the incoming National Democratic Alliance government would repeal AFSPA. “We do not foresee that the Modi government will repeal AFSPA as he has never mentioned repealing of the controversial act during his electioneering in Manipur,” Babloo Loitongbam, executive director of Human Rights Alert, told IANS. “Nonetheless, we hope that they will repeal AFSPA,” Loitongbam said.
