Prime Minister urged to safeguard waterways ALMOST 40,000 people have already signed a petition in support of the Fund Britain’s Waterways campaign. The petition at change.org urges Prime Minister Rishi Sunak to ensure his government takes action to help safeguard Britain’s canals and rivers now and for future generations. It calls on him to acknowledge the many social, economic and environmental benefits that the inland waterways provide

and give his assurance that the Government will intervene, where necessary, to ensure Britain’s rivers and canals remain fully open, navigable, safe and accessible for all. Started by Inland Waterways Association chief executive Prof Sarah Niblock, the petition is aimed to send a clear message to the heart of government about what is at stake. She said: “The Fund Britain’s Waterways petition is now LIVE and visible

– please add your signatures and circulate far and wide. Let’s deliver a hefty pile of pages to 10 Downing Street this autumn. “Also, please download, print and proudly display a window sticker. Whether you are afloat or on dry land, these will send out a striking message.” The sticker, a copy of which can be seen on page 78, can be downloaded at www.waterways. org.uk where there is also a link to the petition.

Explaining why now is the time to act, the petition refers to the waterways’ recognised benefits to well-being, projects helping to regenerate both rural and urban areas and boat-based tourism and leisure activities contributing £2.5 billion to the economy each year. The Canal & River Trust relies on central government grant funding to make up nearly a quarter of its income to maintain its network. But if CRT loses 40%

of its grant funding from 2027, this will impact on maintenance and risk canal closures. The Environment Agency also maintains more than 600 miles of waterways including the Rivers Thames, Medway and Wye as well as the Anglian waterways. It received less than half the funding needed to support its maintenance plans for this year. Scottish Canals also has more than £70 million of maintenance work outstanding.

PROMISING to be the biggest angling event for young people in almost 20 years, the National Celebration of Young People and Fishing will take place on the Staffordshire & Shropshire Canal over the weekend of September 16-17. It has already attracted 275 entrants and is open to anyone aged from seven to 20 years old. Everyone who participates will take home a medal or trophy, a Guru goody bag and a special event certificate signed by six former world champion anglers.

RESEARCH is under way examining two species of rare plants in the Montgomery Canal. Types of pondweed, they are the long-stalked potamogeton praelongus and flat-stalked potamogeton friesii, which are a part of the Potamogetonaceae family – a group of aquatic plants comprised of more than a hundred species worldwide. The research will look at developing different ways to naturally cultivate these plants, which improve water quality, provide shelter for aquatic organisms and act as a primary food source for waterfowl and fish.

THE Brentford Toll House and Gauging Lock on the Grand Union Canal will be open to visit over the weekend of September 9-10 as part of the Open House Festival. One of London’s smallest museums, it is based in the Grade II-listed Toll House and there will also be the chance to meet some of the volunteer lock keepers. Open House Festival is a two-week celebration of London’s homes, architecture and neighbourhoods. For more information visit opencity.org.uk and click on open-house-festival-2023
