Rae Yost Hancock Record Despite the girls locking the boys in kennels made from giant Legos in kindergarten, the senior class of 2017 said some of their favorite memories of school days in Hancock were of being together. Back in kindergarten the girls would play house and make the boys pretend to be dogs, Courtney Timmerman said. “We made dog kennels out of giant Legos for them to play in,” TImmerman said. “Then, Mrs. Brown banned us from the Legos because we locked the boys in the kennel.” The boys must have put the locked in the Lego kennel experience behind them. “The loyalty of friendships made at Hancock High School will be with me for the rest of my life,” Andrew Nelson said. Those friendships didn’t start until this school year for exchange student Tess Brunnberg of Sweden. “My favorite memory is just being here in Hancock and meeting news friends and creating a family,” Brunnberg said. “Knowing that I have friends and family across the world.” For other students, the

friendships started back in elementary school. Recess was a popular time to mingle with friends. “Dodgeball at recess,” Cody Greiner said was a favorite. Don’t forget the field trips. “My favorite elementary memory was getting to go to the Como Zoo and the Science Museum,” Ryan Ascheman said. The students liked the ski trips and other ventures outside the school but the day-to-day activities were also memorable. “My favorite memory from elementary was wrestling and playing hockey in phy ed. With Mr. (Spencer) Yohe,” Michael Milander said. Dr. Seuss Week, the sixth grade pizza party and naptime were also favorite memories. “Always being able to hang out with friends,” is something Scott Iverson liked about elementary school. Sean Cunningham remembers his first day at a new school in Mrs. Voorhees’s room. “All my teachers were great. We have awesome memories,” Chandler Gramm said. School life changed

when the students advanced from elementary school to junior high. The class supported each other during those first days in seventh grade. “In seventh grade our class stuck together as a group when going to class those first few days,” Rachel Schmidgall said. Andrew Shaw liked the longer lunch periods in junior high. Organized sports started playing a larger role in junior high. One of the favorite sports was basketball. But for Taylor Zeltwanger playing football was a highlight of junior high. Ascheman like the “whole process of adjusting from an elementary student to a high school student” while in junior high. Charlie Marczak’s high school days include a memory that involved a classmate. “I will cherish the memories that I have made like when I took the wind up 4-wheeler and got it caught in Sabrina (Mattson’s) hair.” For others, another classmate, apparently Taylor Zeltwanger, made a high school memory when he broke a basket-

ball backboard in phy ed class. While Nick Lally remembers the backboard break he also said the leaf raking projects in high school were memorable for him. Students also have fond memories of pep band, cheering at basketball games and the 2017 homecoming game. “Winning our homecoming game in double overtime,” Zeltwanger said. Benjamin Koehl has memories of the homecoming game but also of the prior school year when as a junior he and friends found time to prank the seniors. Tyler Reese said the reunion of the 1997 state champions boys and girls basketball teams during his senior year basketball season was memorable. Fond memories also included decorating for prom, the trip to New York City and Washington, D.C. and class meals. And that senior trip. Before the Hancock High School seniors graduated they took one last trip as a class. Most of the seniors said that trip is one of their favorite memories. “Because of this senior

his senior year basketball season was memorable. Fond memories also included decorating for prom, the trip to New York City and Washington, D.C. and class meals. And that senior trip. Before the Hancock High School seniors graduated they took one last trip as a class. Most of the seniors said that trip is one of their favorite memories. “Because of this senior trip I finally got to do the things I never got to do, like laser tag and paintball,” Jamie Schmidgall said. His classmates had similar reasons for liking the trip but others also said it was a bonding trip

as well. “Getting to be with the whole class for a day,” was memorable for Elena Schaefer. “Each destination we went to, we created memories,” Timmerman said. “Being together for one last time was special.” Many memories from the past 13 years but for Cunningham the memories culminate on graduation day. “Being able to graduate with my classmates,” Cunningham said of a favorite memory from high school. The seniors will graduate at 7 p.m., Friday, May 19.
