We have also invested in a substantial fleet of large diameter piling rigs able to install a wide range of pile types including bearing piles up to 2.5m in diameter and in excess of 50m depth, contiguous and secant piles, and plunge column piles. We are able to employ wet and dry bore drilling methods and carry out pile load and integrity testing.

Climate change is the biggest long-term challenge faced by all businesses and a responsibility we all share. Together with sister businesses in the Morrisroe Group we are committed to a range of carbon emissions reduction initiatives.

MANAGING FUEL EMISSIONS AND USING ALTERNATIVE FUELS
All of our rigs are fitted with fuel efficient Stage V engines which are regularly maintained by our support team. We provide continuous training to all of our rig operators to ensure they are familiar with the latest manufacturer’s guidance, particularly in relation to power utilisation. This results in improvements to rig utilisation and fuel efficiency which can reduce fuel related (scope I) carbon emissions on site.
Many of our rigs are compatible with HVO fuel. For more information about the available options, please do get in touch to with us.
We are often able to reduce embodied carbon (scope III emissions) with careful consideration to pile design. This may involve reducing the diameter and depth of piles as appropriate to ground conditions. With efficient design solutions we are able to reduce the amount of material used, particularly concrete. Pile design can also reduce the amount of soil disposed and can impact the amount of fuel consumed on site.

Due to the lighter rig weights and low track bearing pressures, the piling platform designs required are relatively nominal and not heavily engineered, typically between 100mm concrete blinding up to 300mm crushed concrete.

We were appointed by Kier Construction initially to install 39no permanent bearing piles within the existing buildings. Our contract scope was later extended to 71no. piles and additional temporary works

piling methods were required owing to the limited space and headroom on site. Our (1.9 tonne) Kitten Rig along with a hydraulic power pack was able to operate in very tight spots with limited headroom. Mini piles (340/300mm diameter) were formed using a bored temporary cased system using up to 6m of temporary casing, and using site batched sand cement grout. Grout was the preferred solution due to poor site access and difficult site logistics which prevented conventional concrete pumping.

The basement was extended from New Bond Street to plots in Cork Street Mews which were located in the middle of the site.
The Cork Street/New Bond Street project was a sensitively designed façade retention and refurbishment scheme with significant new build on a complicated site spanning several building plots between two well-known streets in the Mayfair Conservation Area.

Pile positions were set out to less than 500mm (from the wall to the centre of pile). Piles were designed to depths of between 10m—24.5m and for safe working loads of between 200-600kN.

KIMBOLTON ROW
The strata were challenging with sub-artesian water at a depth of 21.0m. A limestone layer from 0.8m to 2.0m thick was directly below the sub-artesian water. We modified the boring head of the augers and bored the piles with the aid of an air injection kit to minimize the augers torquing up and to ease the boring process.

Works at Kimbolton Row involved the formation of a double-storey basement with substantial drainage sumps and service pits for a new residential property. Access was limited by substantial properties to all elevations of the basement. Restricted access piling methodology was therefore required. Piling was carried out in two phases, the first with our Klemm KR708-2 rig to install a contiguous wall from the existing ground level, followed by the installation of bearing and temporary plunge post piles to support the ground floor slab The second phase was undertaken from B2 level using Klemm KR702-2 piling rig which needed to be lowered approximately 6m below ground to install tension piles and form a secant bored pile wall.

Piling works entailed the installation of 112 No. 450mm diameter sectional flight auger piles founding between 12m -23m depth. We selected to use our Klemm KR708-2 due to the depth of gravel and the selected pile installation methodology.

GSS was appointed by Keltbray Piling to carry out restricted access piling required for the installation of temporary works towers within the boiler house, which were erected to retain the west façade. There was a restricted head room of 5.0m.

Multi- disciplinary techniques
Piling work was undertaken utilizing two Soilmec SR-75 high-torque multi-discipline piling rigs using both continuous flight auger (CFA) and Rotary (LDP) piling techniques depending on the different street elevations. The perimeter secant wall was predominantly constructed using CFA piling techniques, with LDP techniques and segmental casing applied to one of the elevations. Temporary piles (1200mm in diameter) with heavy plunge sections were constructed using LDP techniques
To support the top-down construction methodology employed by A J Morrisroe + Sons for a three-storey basement, we installed 456nr secant (750mm diameter) piles for a 230m perimeter secant piled wall/permanent basement retaining wall, and installed 36nr temporary piles with plunged steel columns which were designed to provide tower crane support, UKPN room and a gantry slab.

The strata proved challenging with sub-artesian water pressures at a depth of 21.0m and a band of limestone (ranging between 0.8m-2.0m in thickness) which existed directly below the subartesian water. Modified drilling techniques were successfully employed using our Soilmec SR-95 piling rig fitted with air injection. This minimized the augers and eased the boring process.

Crown House was a 17-storey mixed-use office block and car park located on either side of a Grade II listed tabernacle church. GSS were appointed by McLaren Construction for the construction of piled foundations to the 17-storey mixed-use block within a contract period of 7 weeks. to a maximum depth of 32m. Piling works consisted of 153 Nr 600mm diameter load-bearing piles (to depths ranging from 27.0m to 31.5m) and 22Nr 750mm diameter CFA Tower Crane piles to depths ranging from 24.0m to 27.5m, and 1 Nr working pile test, SWL 2000kN, DVLkN – 3000kN.
