Letter from the President
BRIAN VOHDEN

Throughout American history, from the first autumn feast of thanks in 1621 between the Plymouth colonists and the Wampanoag people to George Washington’s 1789 Thanksgiving Proclamation, we have been encouraged to cultivate an attitude of gratitude In 1863, President Abraham Lincoln declared the first official Thanksgiving Day. His proclamation called for “ a day of thanksgiving and praise to Almighty God” and hoped this act would help heal the wounds of the nation following the Civil War.
Earlier this month, many of our student-athletes signed their letters of intent, committing to the next level of academics and athletics at some of the nation's top colleges During the celebration, our athletic director, Mr James Smith, reminded students to be thankful not only to their parents and families, whose sacrifices helped them reach this milestone, but also to God, who endowed them with their talents
Morris Catholic continually reminds us of the gifts God has bestowed upon our community. From our gifted scholars and brilliant teachers to our talented artists, dedicated athletes, student leaders, and peer ministers, every student strengthens our school. Every student matters.
While Thanksgiving offers a special opportunity to reflect and express gratitude, it’s hard not to be thankful for the Morris Catholic community year-round
We exist for our students: those currently studying here, those who have graduated, and those who will join us in the future This would not be possible without our benefactors, and I am deeply grateful for your support in our mission to educate young men and women by growing in character, community, and commitment through the knowledge of the love of Christ.
I am grateful to our Board of Trustees for their boundless dedication to our school. I am thankful to our parents for entrusting us with your children each day And, of course, I am endlessly appreciative of our students, who make Morris Catholic the incredible place it is
Know that my prayers are with you during this season of gratitude Enjoy time with your loved ones, and remember to give thanks
Sincerely, Brian J. Vohden

Spirit Week and Homecoming 2024

Student Council held their Annual Spirit Week from October 21 - October 26 Students and staff participated in a number of activities to boost school spirit and celebrate Morris Catholic and our community This year ’ s events involved: senior sunrise, themed dressdown days, class tug-of-war challenges, our PowderPuff and Homecoming games, a block party, a pep rally, and our Homecoming dance organized by the MC cheerleaders. This week was robust and jam-packed with activities and treats for our students and staff What a time to be a Crusader!

Meet Our New Staff
ARLETH SARMIENTOS
Arleth Sarmientos, joins us as our Spanish teacher. She is from Guatemala, where she studied Business Administration and now is completing her master's degree in International Business from Universidad Mariano Gálvez She shares that she loves teaching because teachers have the ability to continue to learn with their students as they teach.

Thank You
RICHARD RACINE
Richard Racine is joining our math department. He is a graduate of the Naval Academy and earned a Masters from Stanford University. He has been bringing his academic and life experience to our students

Thank you to alum, Kevin Heal, ‘83, for coming to speak to our Intro to Business class on Globalization. If you are an alum working in the business sector and would like to present to our students, contact Maureen O’Connor.

Advanced Science: AMI Activities
AMI students had two unique learning experiences this fall In October, they attended the Annual Pumpkin Sling at Picatinny Arsenal. In order to attend, AMI had to build a catapult/trebuchet machine capable of flinging 2lbs-5lbs-sized pumpkins. After several trials, MC’s team was able to successfully shoot a pumpkin 150 feet!
In November, AMI participated in a drone workshop with Alpha Aviation/Alpha Drones, who brought over a variety of their drones and three certified drone pilots. Students learned about the practical use of drones and safety instructions, and then they were off!
Benefits of College Representatives Visiting Campus
Written By: Marina Barbarisi,
‘26

Here at Morris Catholic, the guidance department provides juniors and seniors an amazing tool to help during the college process: college representative visits during Commons Students should take advantage of this to learn more about a school. Taking a booklet and listening to the representative gives a good general overview of a school. They will discuss educational programs, athletic events, and other clubs, which are some things that need to be taken into consideration to decide if that school is a possibility It is important to also ask specific questions about an intended major, sport, or other activity. These college representative visits are a great way to learn about a school before planning a formal visit.
Along with learning about the school, this is an easy way to connect with admissions counselors It is an important part of the college process to show interest in schools A great, easy way to do this is by staying after the representative’s main presentation to ask personalized questions. Introducing oneself and asking a couple of questions that are specific show commitment to the program This strategy not only helps one show interest in the college but also allows one to learn specifics about the school prior to taking an official visit. It is also important to follow up with a quick email to further interest; that can sway the admissions office towards accepting. Sometimes it is difficult to visit every school’s campus, so these college visits during Commons are a great way to show interest. College representative visits are a great resource for juniors and seniors at Morris Catholic, so encourage students to attend

The Class of 2028 Visits West Point

The ninth-grade students visited West Point this fall to learn about its rich history and continuing traditions. The students toured the campus, the Cadet Chapel, and the Great Chain that blocked a section of the Hudson River during the American Revolution The students learned about the rigorous training the cadets continue to receive and the requirements to attend a school like West Point.
Campus Ministry
During the month, our students have committed themselves to servic Theology classes have participated in the Servant Leader program wi planned service trips They have collected over $300 for hurricane relief and partnered with Loyola Retreat House to distribute The Blac Student Union raised just over $300 to donate to Mission Madera, a mission connected to Morris Catholic to serve children in Uganda
In addition, we held our Annual Veteran’s Day service and on Tuesday November 19, all of our theology classes celebrated Vocations Day with speakers from various religious orders

Fine & Performing Arts Upda
The Performing Arts department produced the first play of the season, Twelfth Night. This play was a true showcase of the many talents of the students involved in the program The students gave five performances, featuring two casts, a crew led entirely by students, and live accompaniment from student musicians. Fiftyfour students participated in the cast and crew The actors rose to the occasion to masterfully handle Shakespeare’s classical verse. The KPAC, the black box theatre, was arranged so the performers and audience could experience a traditional Shakespearean “in-the-round” performance. Eighth-graders from Divine Mercy Academy, All Saints Academy, Assumption School, and St. Therese School attended the final dress rehearsal and had the chance to learn about the theatre program at Morris Catholic.

Alumni Homecoming
Thank you for joining us at our first-ever Alumni Homecoming event! Our event began with our Alumni Memorial Mass, where we remember those in our Crusader family who have gone before us. We then had the opportunity to commemorate Christopher Harris Thomas alongside his family and classmates. We retired his jersey and it is now on display outside of the gymnasium that had been named in his honor. Our Alumni Association hosted food, games for kids, and many opportunities to reconnect with MC Thank you to all those who attended!

The classes of 1974 and 1984 recently held their reunions and were back on campus! Thank you for joining us. Scheduling a reunion? Contact moconnor@morriscatholic.org.
