Pupils ready to take the lead

Future leaders: Sydney Swans star Luke Parker joins pupils Yolunda (St Joseph’s), Millie (Fatima), Will (St Joseph’s) Kaelan (St Macartans) Tully (St Thomas More) and Jack (Fatima) for the schools leadership conference at St Macartans in Mornington. Picture: Gary Sissons

LEADERSHIP is a big word for primary school pupils, but one which could play a big part in their futures. Last week, 150 year 5 pupils from four peninsula catholic primary schools attended a leadership conference at St Macartans, Mornington. They came from Our Lady of Fatima Rosebud, St Thomas More Mt Eliza, St Joseph’s Sorrento and St Macartans. The pupils involved themselves in leadership workshops run by teachers from each of the schools throughout the day. They also listened to guest speakers and received leadership tips and inspiration. Dunkley MP Bruce Billson opened proceedings, but perhaps the pupils’ main interest was listening to, and interviewing, Sydney Swans 2014 Best and Fairest winner Luke Parker, who is from Langwarrin. Parker played for Dandenong Stingrays as a 16-year-old, winning the club’s best and fairest award. Family lore is that his father had to build a new cabinet to house all his junior trophies: eight from under nines through to under 16s. After lunch the pupils heard from, and questioned, some year 10 Padua College students on leadership at secondary school.

Pier not ready for Christmas Mike Hast mike@mpnews.com.au THE replacement of Mornington pier’s outer 75-metre section is unlikely to be completed in time for Christmas due to bad weather. The News understands Parks Victoria’s contractor has lost up to seven weeks because of three storms this year,

and the pier will not be ready until the end of February, weather permitting. Earlier this year Parks Victoria said the pier would be ready for Christmas if the contractor was not held up by inclement weather. Work is about 75 per cent completed with the last of many concrete pours occurring two weeks ago. The installation of 80 wave screen panels started last week with five

placed on Thursday before strong wind halted work. The lifting team and a diver were twiddling their thumbs on Friday as they waited for conditions to improve. The concrete panels, made in Geelong, are stored in Carbine Way near Mornington racecourse. Stainless steel handrails are being fabricated in Geelong and will contain many small lights.

Handrails will also be installed on the middle, 53-metre section of the pier, which was replaced in 2010-11 at a cost of $3.5 million. Contractor Johnson Constructions has been using the middle section for its sheds and equipment during construction, and this will be moved and the middle section opened in time for Christmas, providing some joy for fishers and walkers.

In May 2012 the state government announced it would spend up to $15 million to replace the outer section with its 125 pylons, which had been closed since 2010 after storms damaged pylons and dislodged top deck planks in April, August and September. The money was the lion’s share of the government’s $23 million for local port infrastructure upgrades. Continued on Page 6
