Sunday band silenced by the parking lot blues IT didn’t take long for the residents of the Morven Manor retirement village to find out that music man Sidney Cartlidge had arrived in their midst. Soon after moving in to his new Mornington address Mr Cartlidge started doing what he does best: surrounding himself with a bunch of musicians. A harmonica player since he was 10 in Staffordshire, England, the now 88-year-old was soon running the Manor Music Club which performed a monthly concert in the lounge of Morven Manor. Open to the public as well as village residents, the concert regularly pulled a crowd of up to 100 music lovers. “I spent about $15,000 of my own money on equipment, including keyboards and amplifiers, and it took off,” Mr Cartlidge said. Eight to 10 musicians would turn up on the Sunday, sharing some of the $3 a-head admissions. However, the concerts were so popular that each time one was held residents of Morven Manor discovered all their parking spaces were taken. Now the music has been stopped and Mr Cartlidge is looking for another venue in Mornington. He and his musician mates still play at aged care homes but they are ready and willing to get back into their monthly concerts. Mr Cartlidge is hoping someone will come up with a new venue “where there’ll be no complaints but plenty of space to park”. If anyone can help they can call him on 5973 6562. Keith Platt

A 73-year-old man was found dead in the water at Mt Martha on Friday, on the same day a funeral service was held for a Mount Martha father of three who died in a surfing mishap less than a week earlier.
The body of John O’Brien was located by a Mornington Volunteer Marine Rescue vessel in the waters off Mt Martha following an extensive search mission. The alarm was raised by Mr O’Brien’s wife when he failed to turn up for work at 3pm after he had set off earlier in the afternoon from Fishermans Beach to go fishing in his kayak.
A search involving the police air wing, coast guard and volunteer marine rescue teams was launched about 5pm. Ten minutes later, Mr. O’Brien’s kayak was located washed up on Birdrock Beach. At 7pm, the Mornington Volunteer Marine Rescue crew found his body. Police said his death was not being

Earlier in the day, a funeral service was held for 42-year-old David Walker of Mt Martha, who died while surfing at Point Leo the previous weekend. The father of three was dragged unconscious from the water after reportedly hitting his head on rocks while
surfing at Crunchy Point about 3pm on Saturday 2 August. The keen surfer was remembered as the loving husband of Fiona and devoted father to Joseph, Sylvie and Candace. The service was held at New Peninsula Baptist Church in Mt Martha at 1pm last Friday.
