Racecourse gets $5 million upgrade Mornington Racecourse is set to get a multimillion dollar makeover after the Melbourne Racing Club secured government funding from the Victorian Racing Industry Fund to support the major refurbishment. The club is committed to providing racegoers and the local community with exceptional facilities for race days and events, investing a significant $3 million in the project, with an additional $2.034 million being contributed by the state government. The club’s grandstand ground floor will be completely overhauled, creating a new range of quality spaces for the race-going public and club members on race days, with the launch of the new facility to take place on William Hill Peninsula Cup Day on November 1. These new spaces will also provide the local community with luxury options to host non-race day events, positioning Mornington Racecourse as the new premier

events destination on the peninsula. “At Mornington Racecourse we strive to maintain our place as the best country track in Victoria and grow as a key peninsula tourist attraction,” says Brodie Arnhold, chief executive of the Melbourne Racing Club. “We’re grateful for the government support which has made this fantastic renovation possible, the new space not only provides improved facilities on race days but provides the peninsula community with a new function space on non-race days.” Minister for Racing Martin Pakula said: “This $5 million refurbishment will make Mornington Racecourse the largest events centre on the peninsula, attracting even bigger crowds to its many race days throughout the season and providing the local community with an outstanding venue.” For more information about Mornington Racecourse visit mrc.racing.com

Promoting harmony

It is Sherene Hassan’s role to help people become better informed about Islam.

Sherene previously worked as a chemistry and physics teacher, but in 2001 (in the aftermath of September 11) she decided she wanted to be a voice for Muslims in Australia and set about trying to answer people’s questions about Islam.

Sherene, a director of the Islamic Museum of Australia, has given over 1000 presentations about the often-misunderstood religion, and hopes that she is helping to build bridges of understanding between different cultures.

She has since given presentations to diverse audiences, including school groups, Probus clubs and the Australian Federal Police, was the vice president and secretary of the Islamic Council of Victoria for eight years, and in 2007 was named one of ‘Melbourne’s 100 Most Influential People’ by The Age newspaper.

She has witnessed non-Muslims go from being consumed with fear and intolerance to shedding tears and hugging her, thanking her for giving them a healthier education about Islam. The Islamic Museum of Australia, located in the Melbourne suburb of Thornbury, is the only museum of its kind in Australia. In fact, it is the only Islamic Museum in any Western country in the world. The museum aims to promote community harmony and mutual understanding by sharing the arts, history, culture and heritage of Muslim communities in Australia with the general public.

This month, Sherene will be the guest speaker the Frankston Business Network’s WomenConnect Luncheon, where she will discuss the challenges of growing up as a Muslim woman in Australia during a time when multiculturalism didn’t exist. She will also touch on some controversial topics, including the status of women in Islam and that Islam does not promote terrorism. It’s Time to Bee Proactive BY JANE HONE

Albert Einstein is reputed to have said, “If the bee disappeared off the surface of the globe, then man would have only four years of life left. No more bees, no more pollination, no more plants, no more animals, no more man.”  They may seem to some like an annoying pest, but bees are actually an incredibly important part of our ecosystem - and they are at risk. Local bee campaigner Simon Mulvaney, of Save the Bees, says that “Bees are like a canary in a coal mine: if they start to die, it’s a warning to the world that something is up.” Since 2006, we have seen the rise of Colony Collapse Disorder, which has meant a yearly loss of between 30 and 90 per cent of bee colonies. The crisis is caused by various complex factors, including parasites, viruses, and insecticides used by humans on crops. “Products like round-up weed killer and insecticides have been proven to harm bees,” says Simon. Put simply, around a third of food that humans eat, including apples, onions and pumpkin, would not exist without the pollination of bees.

If bees were to die out, it would also be very difficult to feed livestock. Simon began Save the Bees a couple of years ago, after his own beehives swarmed and he decided to put the word out that he would collect swarms from other properties for free, instead of letting them be exterminated. The next day he had twenty phone calls. His job was then to re-house the hives. In just this last year, Simon saved around 70 hives. A large part of his mission is to educate people on the beauty and importance of locally produced goods. Simon points out that the larger, mostly imported brands of honey are often heated to the point where they are robbed of any nutritional value. “If we can approach life in the same way bees do, working together and sharing, then our children’s children will have an abundant future,” Simon says. Mt Eliza is buzzing with the news it will soon have its very own music festival, showcasing a huge range of talent from right here and across Melbourne. The exciting one-day event, to be held in the village centre on Saturday February 6, 2016, will be a celebration of all genres featuring a variety of DJs and bands, performing in venues during the day with a small stage in the village centre. There will also be buskers, stiltwalkers, face painters and a silent disco. Come nightfall and you will find more live music performances at a number of local restaurants and licensed venues in town. Tim Meyer, who is organising the inaugural festival with a small group of volunteers and ongoing assistance from Alison Doherty and the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce, said he was surprised at how quickly the event got off the ground after he initially posted the idea on a Mt Eliza community Facebook page.

“Everyone in town was up for it and people have been very supportive,” he said. “The chamber of commerce got right behind it and helped get venues onboard, so we’re incredibly grateful for their support.” Tim, a Mt Eliza resident, is in the music industry himself, running Melbourne-based company Cobraskin, an artist marketing agency that works with emerging music producers and DJs. While still in the early planning stages, the Mt Eliza Music Festival has already had a number of talented musicians sign on. There will also be multicultural performers, youth bands and a Boho Blends DJ booth. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements in the coming months! A three month labour of love for Red Hill artist Michael Leeworthy has come to fruition and is now proudly displayed in the Norm Clarke walkway adjacent the NAB at Rosebud. The colourful 50-metre mural was commissioned by Rosebud Chamber of Commerce to coincide with a Mornington Peninsula Shire strategy

to improve the safety and use of the laneway, which had been subjected to graffiti attacks. The laneway is now a welcoming community space with the impressive 42 panel mural depicting a vibrant streetscape, landscaping, seating and lighting. Due to weather restrictions, the artist worked on the mural under a large tarp at his home/gallery.

Mr Leeworthy does a lot of work with young people and recently mentored a group of Mt Eliza Secondary College students painting a mural on the side of a Mt Eliza business. He also completed a six month stint with the Work for the Dole program, where he helped participants complete a mural on the history of Westernport in Hastings. www.michaelleeworthy.com

Local actor in new ‘reality’ show

Mornington Peninsula actor Ella Cannon has joined a host of familiar faces to be part of the new mock reality show called ‘Footballer Wants a Wife’.

The hilarious FWAW was written by ex-Neighbours star Ben Nicholas and stars fellow peninsula girl Brooke Satchwell, as well as the likes of Cassandra Magrath from Wolf Creek and footy personality Warwick Capper. “There is a huge bevy of appearances from talent throughout the show and it has been an incredibly exciting - and side-splitting - project to be a part of,” says Ella. Produced by Julian Costanzo at Crankyfish Productions, the project was funded by Screen Australia and has been penned as Australia’s biggest ever web series. The official premiere will screen at the Astor Theatre on September 8 and will be released online the same night. “We are all confident that it’s going to be a great hit,” says Ella. Kids get walking Local primary school students are being encouraged to walk to school during the month of October as part of a statewide healthy living program. VicHealth’s Walk to School campaign encourages Victorians to live healthier and happier lives by becoming more active. I create quirky and vintage inspired clothing in my home studio. Every breast cancer patient’s journey is a personal one.

Breast cancer support for everyone

There are close to 200 breast cancer diagnoses on the Mornington Peninsula and Frankston each year, and while there are common emotions – fear, anger, denial, hope – every individual has their own unique experience. Often, all these people need is someone to listen. As a breast care nurse at The Bays Hospital in Mornington, Jo Lovelock is there to support these local women (and men) through their personal journey. Her role is to act as a patient advocate, coordinating care for those experiencing breast cancer, their families and their carers. She provides information, support and referral to services for patients from their initial diagnosis, through treatment and beyond. Jo knows what these patients are going through, having been diagnosed with the disease herself on New Year’s Eve 2003 while working as a midwife. She recalls the chemotherapy being very tough, particularly as she had three young children at the time. But she received great support from other school mums and from her colleagues at The Bays Hospital, particularly in the form of cooking and cleaning - tasks she felt too unwell to undertake. In 2004, Jo started a support group for peninsula women with breast cancer called Breast Intentions, which is still going strong after 11 years.

The following year she began working as a breast care nurse – a role that became funded by the McGrath Foundation in March 2014. This year 15,600 people will be diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia. While it doesn’t discriminate (145 men are diagnosed annually), there are some triggers, women over 50 are most at risk, as are those who have a high BMI and those who drink higher levels of alcohol. The message Jo wants to get out to the community is that everyone must take responsibility for their health, including conducting breast checks from an early age and regular mammograms for women over 50. “Live life, but follow the guidelines,” she advises. Jo will be speaking at Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s inaugural Beautiful by the Bay luncheon next month. The event, to be held at Mornington Yacht Club on Wednesday October 7, is raising money for BCNA, the peak national organisation for all Australians personally affected by breast cancer. Lighting the way for marine navigation BY KRISTY MARTIN

With 120 staff members and offices in the US and UK, Sealite is not the type of business you would expect to have its headquarters in Somerville. The company is at the top of its game, leaders in the field of marine and aviation lighting and navigation aids. In fact, it is the fastest growing manufacturer of marine navigation aids in the world. Sealite manufactures ocean buoys, channel markers, telemetry equipment and monitoring equipment. It is contracted to modernise existing ports, upgrade lighthouse technology and supplies marine lanterns and buoys to the aquaculture industry. Operating purpose-built facilities and employing a highly skilled team of engineers and production specialists, Sealite is unique in that most of its manufacturing is done in-house. The company will soon expand its headquarters in Somerville, as demand for marine and aviation products continues to grow. Sealite acquired a 43-acre site in 2014, and construction of the new facility is set to begin this year, with completion expected in late 2016. According to chief executive, Chris Proctor, Sealite was created in 2003 in his father’s Jeff’s garage as a hobby business and simply grew from there. In 2005, Chris (who has a master’s degree in marketing) and Jeff (who comes from an accounting background) recognised that the optics of their marine lighting could be altered to meet the needs of the aviation industry. Sealite recently installed new runway lighting at Tyabb Airfield, has provided lighting for Melbourne Airport and is often tasked to light up remote area runways for the Royal Flying Doctor Service. The Civil Aviation Safety Administration and the Federal Aviation Administration have also contracted the company. When it comes to maritime achievements, Sealite has worked on ports in Hastings, Melbourne and Gladstone and is currently undertaking projects in Europe, the Middle East and Singapore. They also do large projects for dredging companies in Latin America. Sealite has developed a cutting edge system that allows incandescent lamps used in lighthouses to be replaced with LEDs, which are lower maintenance and more cost efficient. They recently modernised the Cape Byron lighthouse and are set to do the same for other lighthouses across Australia. And with technology always changing, there are certainly avenues for company expansion. The future of Sealite is looking bright. www.sealite.com.au

These talented Mt Martha locals work hard at their sport, training six hours per week with professional talent developer Steve Foot from Mt Eliza Tennis Club and hitting the ball in their backyard court for another four. They are ranked number one for their age group in Victoria respectively, and Zahra has fifth ranking nationally. The twin’s commitment to excelling while enjoying all aspects of the game has resulted in some impressive results. They’ve just won Tennis Victoria’s statewide run Frank Sedgmen Cup held in August in Traralgon and played in the Super 10’s Tennis Australia Victorian Nationals team (four boys and four girls) during the Australian Open this year. There is also a sponsorship deal with Wilson Tennis after winning Tennis Victoria’s Wayne Arthurs Cup 2014. “Our kids really enjoy sport. “They run five kilometres with us each morning and they’re always on the court,” says father Nick. Holidays are spent playing tennis tournaments and Saturday mornings are dedicated to serious competition. Zahra is set to advance to the open age competition next year as she’s already playing in the Loretta Thrupp, which is the highest competition for up to 18 year olds. Training in Florida is also on the agenda. “The kids will know how far they want to go,” continues Nick, and by the sounds of it, that will be a long long way. Watch this space. BY LIZ ROGERS

Father and son tackle 320km ride It might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but for father and son Chris and Phillip Stock, a 320km bike ride through Victoria’s goldfields is the perfect family bonding exercise. Putting their feet to the pedals and their legs to the test, the Mt Eliza duo will cover anywhere between 70-100km daily as they cycle for five days in the RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride. The event, which begins on November 28, is expected to attract 3500 riders cycling between Bendigo and Ballarat over nine days. Chris and Phill, 16, have decided to tackle the five-day leg, covering 322km. Exploring Victoria’s countryside and historic gold rush towns by day, at night they will camp out and enjoy social gatherings with other riders, food and live music. Police officer Chris regularly cycles with the Southern Peninsula Emergency Riding Team (SPERT) and says the pastime offers numerous health benefits. He enjoys the freedom of the sport and the ability to relax his mind. “Cycling keeps you fit and it can really bring people together.

“Every family should be doing it together as a bonding activity.” Chris chuckles about ‘living out of each other’s pockets’ for the five days, but insists he gets along well enough with his son that there won’t be any tension. “We know how to cope with each other.” For footballer Phill, the epic ride is not only an opportunity to spend time with his father and see the countryside, cycling will also help a knee injury he suffered earlier this year. Having only recently started training, Phill knows he has a bit of work ahead to get his fitness level up. “I think it’s going to be a good experience and a good atmosphere,” he said. The RACV Great Victorian Bike Ride is in its 32nd year and is the largest multi-day bike ride in the southern hemisphere. For more details, go to greatvic.com.au

BELLA ON MAIN Melly Shute Pre-loved fashion boutique, Bella on Main has a brand new owner. Melly Shute, ex-fashion editor comes to the Peninsula with a wealth of fashion experience. Where are you originally from? I grew up in North Caulfield. My mother owned the dry cleaning business on Orrong Rd. I was raised in the tiny flat behind the business. Mum had many wealthy Jewish customers who would drop off stunning pieces, giving me exposure to designer labels at a very young age. What brought you to Mornington?

What are your plans for the store? Customer service is so important. I expect it and I get a kick out of delivering it. In terms of product, I still sell pre loved designer pieces but I source a lot of brand new Australian designer labels. The beauty of Bella is that I sell labels for a third of the price, making designer labels of affordable for people who wouldn’t usually splurge!

Bling at the Bowl High Tea Director of Frankston Bowls Club, Alan McNeil, invited Dress for Success Mornington Peninsula and The Local Red Cross Auxiliary to his club for an entertaining ‘Bling at the Bowl ‘High Tea’. Guests enjoyed delicious sandwiches, slices and cakes all prepared by the Red Cross ladies and were entertained by local singers Ron Lees and his daughter Andrea and their accompanist.

Proceeds from the event were generously donated to Dress for Success Mornington Peninsula and the local Red Cross Auxiliary. Dress for Success Mornington Peninsula operates from Bayside Shopping Centre in Frankston, and provides support, business outfits, workshops and mentoring for disadvantaged unemployed women in the area who want to return to work. They recently received a $10,000 grant from Westpac Bank for Community Services.

Can you help Jessie? Like many girls her age, Jessica Kennedy loves pink, is a fan of Dora the Explorer and wants to be a ballerina when she grows up. The five-year-old is confident, strong-minded and makes friends easily, having started school at Baxter Primary earlier this year. But despite all this, Jessie is not like most kids her age. She suffers from a rare form of congenital muscular dystrophy, meaning her muscles are gradually weakening. CMD mainly affects skeletal muscles, which are the muscles for movement. Most affected people cannot walk unassisted but progressive weakness impairs walking altogether. People with this condition develop contractures in many of their joints, including the arms, hips, and knees, which restricts movement. Respiratory muscles are weakened, requiring a machine to help them breathe. Sadly, there is no cure for this condition. Jessie has been receiving intensive physiotherapy since she was diagnosed at eight months old. She has never had the ability to crawl, run, arise from the floor unaided or do day-to-day tasks like toileting and bathing. In recent months, her walking ability has severely decreased and doctors have now said she needs to be in a wheelchair permanently.

With Jessie becoming wheelchair-bound, her family needs help to pay for the electric wheelchair, which will cost about $23,000. This amount does not take into account their need for a wheelchair-friendly vehicle, plus a number of alterations to the family home, including ramps, shower modifications and mobility aids. Jessieâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s mother Angela and friend Leonie are hosting a fundraising trivia night for Jessie at the Tyabb Hall in October and are asking the community to help them by donating items for auction. ‘I lost 20kg through hypnosis!’ Ever since the birth of her third child, Mt Martha woman Robbyn Foster had constantly struggled with her weight. While her diet wasn’t ever extremely unhealthy, she always had a problem with portion control. But last year, she found the solution she’d been waiting for – and it didn’t involve dieting or exercise! Robbyn lost 20kg through hypnosis. The 70-year-old did five sessions with clinical hypnotherapist Gayle Dwyer and under-went the ‘Virtual Gastric Band’ program, which allowed her to lose 20kg in six months simply through the power of the mind. “It was easy. You can basically eat what you want but it is just (about) portion control. “I would definitely recommend it to anybody.” Robbyn’s health was declining last year and she was in hospital for a

BY KRISTY MARTIN colonoscopy when she received a dire warning from her surgeon – he told her she had to lose weight. The doctor recommended Robbyn make an appointment with Gayle and give the virtual gastric band a go. The program allows the participant’s subconscious to believe their stomach is smaller through hypnosis. So, through relaxation, their mind is reprogrammed to eat less. During the virtual gastric band sessions, Robbyn was played soft music and encouraged to relax in a recliner chair. She was told to imagine herself undergoing a real gastric band procedure (in which the stomach is surgically restricted by a silicone band, allowing the patient to feel less hungry) and also to visualise her goal weight and appearance. Robbyn noticed a difference in her eating habits after the very first session. She began portioning meals to the size of a saucer, drinking plenty of water and

lost 2kg in the first week. Never feeling ‘restricted’ or like she was on a diet, Robbyn can’t understand why more people don’t try losing weight through hypnosis. “I think there is a stigma about hypnosis because of what you see on TV, but it’s not at all like that.” She also thinks the cost might deter some people. “Personally, it was the best $680 I ever spent!” As well as feeling better, having more energy and improving her health, people tell Robbyn she looks years younger. “The compliments are a good incentive… but it’s a mindset. “It’s like smoking, you either want to stop or you don’t. “I’ve kept the weight off for 13 months now, so it works. “If I can do it, anyone can!” To make an appointment with Gayle Dwyer, phone 0414 714 644.

Mornington Peninsula blogger Kelly McLeod is always looking for new ways to keep her children entertained. The Mt Martha mum of two runs a

popular family travel blog called My Little Adventures, where she writes about her adventures with her kids around the world and on the peninsula. Starting the blog back in November 2013, it now has close to 5500 Facebook and

Instagram followers was recently named as one of the top 100 blogs in the country by Kidspot Voices of Australia. The Eco Living Display Centre, located at The Briars in Mount Martha, is a retrofitted building that displays a range of sustainable ideas. These include include solar passive design, thermal mass, solar power and wind power, solar hot water, ventilation and devices to save ‘stand-by’ power.

The centre also shows a range of options for insulation, window coverings, glazing, energy efficient lighting and appliances and water efficiency measures. Given the current trends in disease, chemical warfare, and terrorism, there is no doubt in our minds that a Zombie Aporcalypse is coming to Mornington.

At Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery Storm in a Teacup is one of Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery’s major exhibitions for 2015. On display until September 27, this fascinating exhibition reflects upon tea drinking in Australia. Introduced by the British colonials, the afternoon tea party was an attempt to ‘civilise’ the land. Tea drinking became so popular in the colonies that by 1888 the amount of tea consumed per capita exceeded the amount consumed in England. Soon after, billy tea was to become an enduring symbol of the pioneering spirit, immortalised by Henry Lawson’s stories published under the title While the billy boils. Storm in a Teacup features paintings, works on paper, photographs, ceramics, and sculpture and installation. Bring the kids along to see the incredible afternoon tea setting with cakes, crockery and even cushions made entirely of icing sugar!

Children will also be captivated by tiny figurines in glass teapots along with portraits of an artist’s grandparents made from coffee stained sugar cubes. A range of special events accompany the exhibition, including a school holiday pantomime on Saturday September 26 from 10.30am-12.30pm presented by the Flying Bookworm Theatre Company. After the pantomime children and parents will be guided to the Civic Reserve Recreational Centre to enjoy a supervised 45 minute activity class of bunny hop bounces and tea party tumbles. This special event is a major fund raiser for the College, which is organised by a small team of volunteer parents and College staff. The Fashion Show provides a wonderful opportunity for all secondary students to display their artistic fashion talents and showcase their own creations to a large audience. The event also aims to encourage students to develop greater confidence and self-esteem within themselves. Slated for February 2016, the festival will be in its fifth year and is an ever-growing event that has placed Rosebud firmly in the arts scene. The winner of the major prize will take home $5000 in cash after being judged by a panel of celebrities on the night. Festival director and Australian actor Steve Bastoni encouraged people to submit their entries to the competition when they open later this month. All it takes is one good idea, he said. “We had an entry in this year’s festival and it was the first film the filmmaker had ever made. “To be shortlisted for a film festival on your first short film is amazing.” Entries open in late September, there is a $30 (+ GST) entry fee and films are accepted from Australia and overseas. Psychedelic works by local enigma BY PENNY IVISON

Philippe De Kraan has been painting portraits across Europe and Australia since the 1970’s but his upcoming exhibition ‘A Moment in Time’ at Oak Hill Gallery is an important one for him. He feels he has been able to conquer Europe and Holland and achieved much success, but he has not yet been able to achieve the same locally. De Kraan’s works may transport you back to a place you loved in the 70s but the human element makes them relevant in any era. Although he no longer uses real people as subjects for his art, each character is very real to him and has a soul. He hopes this will touch those

who experience his art – “I hope they will cry.” De Kraan is inspired by Rembrandt, Van Gogh and Brett Whitely because of their perseverance against the odds and their struggle to create. “It is not an easy thing to make something from nothing.” So will this be the moment that De Kraan succeeds against the odds? Launch of new open gardens program

Open Gardens Victoria is delighted to be launching a new era of garden openings in Victoria at the inspirational Musk Cottage in Flinders on September 26 and 27. This family-friendly weekend will include activities for children, guided tours, food and coffee carts, Sam Baillieu wines and plants for sale. Some 27 years after the first open garden scheme was launched in Victoria, the wheel has turned full circle and Victoria once again has its own state-based program. Rick Eckersley, owner of the inspirational Musk Cottage garden, has been a longtime supporter of the open gardens scheme. Indeed, some visitors will remember this garden as part of a special twilight opening in 2012. It is fascinating to see just how much the garden has developed since then. Musk Cottage has been a pet project of Rick Eckersley and the Eckersley Garden Architecture design team for the past seven years. The 10-acre property was purchased in 2008 with the intention of creating a different approach to garden making in Melbourne and the Mornington Peninsula. The plan was to ignore the latest fashion trends and to create something uniquely Australian. Strong, tough and sustainable. The palette of plants was not restricted to native, or indigenous. Rather, there was a conscious choice to plant what would grow well in the particular conditions of the Musk Cottage grounds, seamlessly knitting plants from around the world. Musk Cottage today stands as an incredible testament to low maintenance, sustainable gardening.

Shoreham’s Whistlewood Gallery directors Susan McCulloch and Emily McCulloch Childs have just returned from their annual trips to the Aboriginal art awards and art fairs in Darwin and Alice Springs to select works for their Spring Salon + Art Parade on Sept 19-20. This year they were thrilled to find that they represent more than 20 of the 65 artists who were finalists in the 32nd Telstra National Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Art Awards in Darwin. “The NATSIAAs are Australia’s longest running and most prestigious Aboriginal art awards,” says Susan. “More than 280 works were entered, and it was quite something to find out that this year we represent around 1/3 of those chosen as finalists. “Two - Robert Fielding and Betty Pumani both from the APY’s Mimili Maku art centre – won awards. “Betty won the general painting award and Robert won the works on paper award. “We’ve been long time supporters of Robert’s work in particular,” Susan continues. “He’s not only a wonderful artist but a strong

cultural leader as well as talented curator and assistant art centre manager. “We’ve also selected the work of another very talented artist from Mimili, Tuppy Ngintja Goodwin, to feature on the invitation for the upcoming show.” As well as a range of works of these, and other finalist artists from the South Australia’s APY art centres, such as Anyupa, Keith & Tjampawa Stevens from Tjungu Palya, the McCullochs are presenting more than 100 works from the Central, Western and Eastern Deserts, Arnhem Land, the Pilbara and the Kimberley along with new watercolours by the Namatjira school of Hermannsburg in one of their unique and informative Art Parades that launches the show. Suzannah Espie’s voice melts all over you, gets under your skin and settles deep inside.

Her soulful songs merge with powerhouse vocals to create pure listening pleasure. This blues/soul songstress knows her craft; she’s been on the Melbourne music scene for more than 25 years after leaving Perth a lifetime ago, and still thrives on playing hometown front bars where the crowds get rowdy and rock on. “I still get stage fright,” she says. “I mean what happens if people think I’m s--t?” Unlikely, as this mother of two is just about to release her fourth album Mother’s Not Feeling Herself Today on the back of the haunting single I’m Sorry which was recorded with a choir of 13 female musicians. Her folk/country album Sea of Lights received album of the year in Rhythms Magazine 2012 and was listed in the top 15 albums of the year in the 2012 Age Entertainment Guide. She was also Port Fairy Folk Festival Maton Artist of the year 2013. A lot of hard work has resulted in receiving the music kudos she deserves.

Espie spent eight years gigging around Australia and touring the States in three-part harmony country pop band Git with Trish Anderson and Sarah Carroll. She performs with country outfits the Cartridge Family and the Junes, and continues to write and record. So how does she juggle the kids, a musician husband (who plays in three bands too) and stay sane and creative? “It’s just who I am. “My parents played a lot of music at home and Mum and nanna played the piano. “I wrote my first song at fourteen.” Does she have any nerves releasing her next album after the great success of Sea of Lights? “I’m really proud of Mother’s Not Feeling Herself Today. “It’s the first time I’ve written songs to a theme - all those pressures women place on themselves when they have kids and the conflict between art and motherhood. “I’m very happy with it,” and you’ll be happy too because Espie is heading peninsula way in November. The little white church on Nepean Highway is turning 150! October 16 marks the day in 1865 when the corner stone of the heritage-listed St James the Less Church in Mt Eliza was laid. With its Gothic architecture and altarpiece paintings by Australian artist, Violet Teague, the church at St James the Less remains a distinctive landmark and home for the current community of Anglican Christians in Mt Eliza, who SEPTEMBER 2015 (46)

gather there every week. Art has always been a feature of worship spaces in the parish and a source of inspiration for its people. Along with Teague’s paintings, artworks including a spectacular stained-glass window by Leonard French and woodcarvings by sculptor Eva Schubert, form a wider collection on permanent display. Continuing this tradition, the main church’s foyer has this year been opened up as a gallery space for contemporary art that explores Christian story, spirituality and experience.

New direction for Primrose Fair

Jacqui and Sophie are the new team at the helm of Primrose Fair, the peninsula’s wonderful designer market that showcases innovative and creative small businesses and is held on the grounds of Toorak College. Sophie and Jacqui, who met at Toorak College when their boys became friends in the ELC and have known each other for four years, both have experience in brand and event management and also share a passion for design. “We are delighted to be working together and excited about our future plans for Primrose Fair.

Mount Eliza local and professional milliner Felicity Northeast (pictured) is heading to the Arts Centre this month to be part of the Millinery Association of Australia’s MAArvelous Millinery event. This talented milliner has produced yet another inspiring collection of bespoke headwear which will be paraded on the catwalk on September 19. There are around 60 pieces combining Felicity’s love of art, textiles and the practical (she used to be a paediatric dietitian) in her new collection. All MAA members will be hosting one off popup stores after the show, so guests can purchase or order custom-made creations – just in time for Melbourne’s Spring Racing Carnival! Felicity began sewing and painting as a child. Her Felicity Northeast Millinery business was launched in 2009 and has flourished as a result of her elegant, labour intensive headwear which is now being worn throughout Australia, England, Ireland, France and Dubai. Local photographer in AusMumpreneur Awards Kelly McDonald of Garden Babies Fine Art Photography has made it to the finals of the national 2015 St George Banking Group AusMumpreneur Awards. Kelly, a local mum who creates whimsical fairytale portraits of children, was shortlisted in the People’s Choice Category for Service in Business. Kelly previously worked as a children’s entertainer and educator before starting Garden Babies, an amalgamation of her love of faeries, working with kids, and magic. It’s been a year and her work is slowly being recognised. She has also begun teaching her technique of painting the pictures digitally. Comfort for breast cancer patients A group of selfless Mornington Peninsula volunteers are helping to give comfort and support to breast cancer patients by providing them with handmade post-surgery cushions.

Breast Cancer Comfort Cushions facilitate rest and sleep by cushioning and supporting the wound site after surgery. They also protect the area from troublesome everyday objects like car seatbelts. Up to 25 volunteers from the Mt Martha Valley Probus sewing group and other members of the community make the cushions from scratch, which are given to patients at Frankston Hospital and The Bays in Mornington. The cushions come as part of individual gift packs that include X-ray bags, drainage bags, a small pouch of lavender and an inspirational poem.

One group of peninsula women get together once a month to work on the project and while some can’t sew, they are given other tasks such as stuffing the cushions and tying ribbons. The Breast Cancer Comfort Cushions initiative was created in 2002 by dairy farmer Paula Summerfield. They are now made by volunteer sewing groups all over Victoria. Local woman Nanette Vassallo knows firsthand the positive impact these cushions can have. After she underwent surgery for breast cancer at Frankston Hospital, she was given one of the cushions and says it provided not only pain relief, but also emotional comfort. “It was so nice to think someone cared enough to volunteer their time to make these. “I was so grateful I rang up to give a donation and by the time I got off the phone I was the Dromana co-ordinator,” she chuckles. The peninsula group has been running for four years and

they are about to deliver their 460th cushion. “We can barely keep up with the demand,” says Nanette. “We are always looking for assistance, whether it be volunteers or donations.” To support the group or find out more, phone 5981 9058.

Local woman Nicky Mih established her human rights organisation Free To Shine in 2010, after setting out to make a difference. “I read harrowing stories about girls in the sex trade and I had to act, I had to do something to help.” Nicky packed her bags and headed off to Cambodia in 2010, with a background in teaching and working with children. She arrived in Cambodia and spent a month with survivors of sex slavery. What she heard was horrific. Looking at what is most effective in stopping people traffickers Nicky decided to make education the main focus of her organisation. She found that girls who were better educated were far less likely to be targeted, and staying in school can make all the difference. The difficulties in accessing remote communities and villages have stopped other organisations from helping these girls, but not Nicky. In five short years, Nicky and the Free To Shine team have put 500 at risk girls back in school and provided them with the basic human rights of clean water, shelter and food.

Driven by a team of dedicated young women, including a group of Mornington locals, Free To Shine also helps Australian women too. By providing leadership opportunities as well as skills in working in a human rights organisation, the young women involved are helping girls on an international scale and getting the experience they need to enact real change locally. Involving the community is essential in getting sponsors and supporters. Free To Shine runs the annual Mornington Masquerade, held at Café 115, which is coming up on October 10. Where does YOUR food come from? Marlene Hoff lives by a simple philosophy: Eat local. It was her desire to spread the word about local, sustainable and ethical food and wine that led her to establish her business ‘100 Mile Foodie’ in 2013. “I have always cared deeply about where my food comes from, how it has been raised and the impact it has on the planet,” Marlene explains. “Our family would sit at the dinner table and be excited about how locally sourced the food was on our plate. “Where possible we would try and support local farmers and producers and eat with conscience in lieu of just filling our tummies.” Marlene is based in Somerville - but also owns a property in Gippsland - and after seeing a documentary about how far the food in your shopping basket travels (sometimes 70,000 miles!) before it reaches the plate, she set about trying to change this. Educating herself about local produce, she now eats a diet of local, seasonal vegetables with a small amount of sustainable fish and free-range poultry (but no pork or red meat) mostly sourced from within a 100-mile radius. Marlene does this for numerous reasons: to support Australian business, to protect the environment and to avoid participating in cruel industrial farming practices that are common in the meat industry. “The farmers’ markets are a great place to start for anyone who wants to better their food habits, as it brings a variety of produce together in one place.” Marlene, who recently completed a scholarship with Maggie Beer in the Barossa Valley, recently implemented a SEPTEMBER 2015 (46)

Kitchen Garden Program in Somerville Secondary School, and hopes to establish something similar to Stephanie Alexander’s Kitchen Garden Foundation for primary schools. It is her belief that teenagers should be taught to cook healthy meals using local, seasonal and sustainable produce. Marlene has now formed partnerships with local ethical businesses and people who share her passion for local produce, she runs cooking classes in Frankston using produce sourced from within 100 miles from home. Peninsula tops dining awards If there was ever any doubt that our region has the best restaurants, you just have to look at how many were honoured in the 2015 Restaurant & Catering Industry Association Awards.

THE ROCKS NAMED BEST SEAFOOD RESTAURANT

The Rocks in Mornington was named Best Seafood Restaurant in Victoria and Two Buoys in Dromana won Best Breakfast Restaurant. Four of the six finalists from across regional Victoria and Tasmania vying for the breakfast restaurant award were from the Mornington Peninsula. Mornington’s The Boyz 4 Breakie and The Winey Cow were both in the running, along with Rosebud’s Blue Mini Eatery. Accolades also went to Rosebud’s hip new hotspot The Milbri, which picked up finalist awards for Best New Restaurant and Social Media. The ever-popular Winey Cow was also shortlisted for the new restaurant award and Blue Mini Eatery, Emporium and Events was named among the best tourism restaurants. Woodman Estate in Moorooduc received a finalist award for Restaurant in a Hotel or Resort and Paringa Estate was honoured in the Winery

I own and produce the fudge and nougats at Peninsula Fudge in Rosebud. My husband Tony is the business director. How long have you worked there? We have had the business for eight years. Where did you work previously? I’ve previously owned cafes, had a small catering business and have also been a cook at an aged care facility. What is your signature fudge flavour? Our signature fudge flavour is Strawberries & Cream featuring local freeze dried berries and our signature nougat is Honey and Roasted Almonds featuring Pure Peninsula’s Orange Blossom Honey. What makes a good chef? I believe you need a genuine desire and interest to produce a top quality product, and to create something that tastes amazing for your consumers.

Favourite food? Anything produced on the peninsula, in particular the amazing cheeses our producers make. Favourite restaurant and why? On the peninsula we love Max’s at Red Hill Estate and in Melbourne Rockpool. What is the best thing about the Mornington Peninsula? Everything! We have it all. What do you do in your spare time?

Play with our gorgeous grandsons as often as possible and catch up with friends and family. What is one thing not many people know about you? I love the V8 Supercars – Bathurst is mandatory viewing. From a vineyard at 100m altitude on the warmer end of the region. The aroma is savoury subtle oak, lees and wild yeast The weave of fruits and acids allows the plump fruits to hold with a long acidity building and holding creamy yoghurt white butter with a long line of acid to finish, Main Ridge Estate Chardonnay 2013 96 points $55 This may be Nat’s second last wine but it is still a delight. Rich in chardonnay nuance and dense with age worthy fruit, honey yellow peach and stone fruit aromas with creamy lees, subtle cashew and nuts in a very subtle frame. The palate has plush fruit weight, texture and stylish chardonnay glamour like a wedding day dotted with confetti of flavours of wild honey, white and yellow nectarine fruit and a rich creamy texture. Yabby Lake Block 2 Pinot Noir 2013 96 points $95 Exquisite balance of stalk, spice, dark berry, and savoury, fresh and ripe red fruit aromas makes this wine a remarkable balancing act. BRINGING WORLD FLAVOURS to Peninsula’s Leading Contemporary Brasserie With only a backpack and lots of motivation, Rob Licciardo rode a bike around France, visiting all the local markets, wineries and food stalls he could possibly cover! He was on a food fact-finding mission to be able to add a modern touch and presentation to the classic flavours of Europe. Riding along the beautiful rivers at Bordeaux to Hildorien, he stopped to take in the beautiful scenery and local produce at the markets. He visited the wineries of Rothschild’s’ Chateaux, then rode across to Cornwall, popping in for a squiz

at Michelin-starred restaurants along the way with their traditional Provençal cooking style influence. Of course he spent a day again working with Marcus Eaves at Pied a Terre in London through a busy lunchtime, always learning new flavours and styles.

Italy without the airfare D.O.C. has really placed its stamp on Main St, Mornington, and by looking at the blackboard and the news, they have made an impression on the world too.

‘Raku’ launch at Antipodes The opening of ‘Raku’, an exhibition that ran from July 18 to August 2 at Antipodes Bookshop in Sorrento, was held on July 17. Jo Ridgeway from Mornington Peninsula Shire opened the evening with an excellent speech, and it was a vibrant event in which guests could view (and purchase) beautiful ceramic pieces created by Sue Sanderson and her pottery students. The ceramics were made in the traditional raku firing style—an ancient Japanese ceramics technique (although it may have been introduced to Japan by Koreans) in which pieces are subject to low firing temperatures.

This is completely understandable with the authenticity of menu, staff, drinks and ambience. Close your eyes and you are in Italy without the airfare. After ordering and enjoying the homemade minestrone and panini, I grazed on the Rucola salad that was made up of simple ingredients again and so moreish. In fact, D.O.C’s food really does feel like you’re

As a boy growing up in Jerusalem, it was cooking alongside his mother and grandmother that first sparked his passion for food.

Chef E was trained at one of Italy’s finest culinary establishments, the three star Michelin restaurant known as ‘Da Vitorrio’ located in Bergamo, and he worked at Marco Pierre White’s one star Michelin restaurant, ‘Mirabelle’, in London.

Born and raised in Israel, Chef E went on to work with world renowned chefs in the South of Europe and England after which he obtained his BA in hospitality management at ‘Hotelschool The Hague’ before relocating to Australia in 2010.

Growing up in this multicultural city exposed him to endless flavours, ideas and possibilities.

He owned a catering company which was named after his passion and his Exploratory Culinary Lifestyle, ‘ECLpassion’, he has privately

cooked for dignitaries and celebrities, including Shane Warne and Elizabeth Hurley. His food is diverse and has a lot of international influence, you will feel like you are eating in the south of Europe and you will experience some very unique dishes. The new concept that Chef E introduced at ‘Eighteen78’ offers a fabulous tasting menu where the guests can choose between three, five or seven course ‘Chef’s Choice Menu’. There’s potato and poppy seed pikelets, nasi goreng, the Scotsman or tex mex quesadilla. From 12pm, they do a wonderful array of scrumptious lunch treats too. My nasi goreng with chilli sambal was just like closing my eyes and

being in Bali. The fried egg touch was perfect before entering back into Main St and facing the day. If you just want to grab a coffee, there is just too much to choose from in the sweets section, with everything being made in-house by ‘chef’. Growing your own food has many well-established blackboard where you can list the things to do as you see them on your regular inspections. This will be benefits, yet for some it is still deemed to involve particularly helpful when it comes to organising your too much work to make it an attractive activity. Like many aspects of suburban living there are tasks to perform in the food garden to keep it functioning well, much the same as the upkeep to your dwelling, car or lawn. However if organised and understood well, most of these tasks can be enjoyed and shared with the whole family. It’s really a matter of not letting things get out of hand where you may have to play a bit of catch-up (like the housework). A couple of hours a week in the garden should be enough to keep your crops and trees producing food for you year round. Common tasks might include a bit of weeding, pruning, pest removal, successive planting and harvesting. Regular observation is the key. If you’re not watching what happens in the garden things can get away from you fairly quickly. A good way to keep on top of the gardening jobs, thereby avoiding those ‘big gardening weekends’ is to keep a gardening diary or put up a gardening

successive plantings of various crops. For example, as you see the lettuces or beetroot starting to put out leaves rapidly you can sow the next crop, or as the spuds start to get up around your knees you can get some more in the ground (assuming you are not expecting frosts). A gardening blackboard sitting in a prominent spot will also be a good reminder as you walk past it every day. Over a number of growing seasons you will find a rhythm as with other aspects of your daily life, and care for your crops will become second nature. You will innately know what needs to be done and when. As we come into the early weeks of spring, we can begin to sow our first seeds for the warm season crops; cucumber, zucchini, tomato and eggplant seeds can all be sown in punnets ready to plant out in a few weeks. Successive crops of beetroot, leafy greens, broccoli and salad vegetables can all continue to go in as the sun starts to warm the soil for our main growing season.

As mentioned in previous articles, most of the vegetative waste coming from the garden can be reused to create compost, mulch or liquid manures. It is well worth organising an area adjacent to the food garden where you can transfer your waste to be recycled and redistributed in the garden. This will maximise the retention of nutrients in your system, saving you money and saving on packaging. With a little organisation, keen observation and an hour or two each week your garden can feed you and your family much of your fruit and vegetable needs.

Collect everything and anything that inspires you, and create your own lookbook or mood board to capture it all. “In the kitchen I was inspired by the heritage of the 1880 building while still making if feel and work as a kitchen of the 21st century,” says Shaynna. • Who will use the space and how? “Keeping these things in mind helps to create your layout, the appliances and fittings you need, right down to the colour palette you will select.” • Define your must-haves Both the bathroom and kitchen are frequently used spaces and therefore it’s critical the fittings are both functional and practical but also visually appealing.
