Sunny smile for spring and summer

Spring is here and summer is just around the corner, and that means it’s time to get your smile ready to shine!

Searching for the Perfect Smile . . . Have the confidence that what is created for you is uniquely yours - whiter is only part of what it takes to create a perfect smile! If you’re thinking about transforming your smile, visit Dental Care Mt Eliza for an initial consultation to develop a treatment plan explaining the best solution for you. There will be time to ask lots of questions, understand the process and have a clear vision of the final outcome. Your vision may involve whitening, bonding, veneers, crowns, orthodontic treatment, dentures, implants and/or gum work. Have you heard of “NEW SMILES IN 3 DAYS?” we can do that too!

Dental Care Mt Eliza loves helping its patients create the “vision” they have for their smile, with tooth-whitening, veneers, crown and bridge work, implants, bonding and orthodontics. You don’t have to be born with a beautiful smile to have one, and Dr Scott Robertson and his team can help you achieve it. With Wednesday evening appointments available and a highly experienced and caring team of dentists and hygienists, Dental Care Mt Eliza makes it easy for you to smile through summer. So what makes a great smile? A great smile is one that makes you happy, that enhances what you already have. A smile is the most frequently used facial expression, and people are more drawn to people who smile. Smiling releases endorphins and makes people feel better, and a smiling person is judged to be more pleasant, attractive, sincere, sociable and competent than a non-smiling person. Proudly supporting Dr Scott Robertson and his passion for dental health care are Dr Emma Barnsley, Dr Meetal Shah and Hygienists Deb and Kate. Manyung Gallery custodians are developing an exciting artistic future BY LIZ ROGERS

Manyung Gallery (established 1968) is proud to be the third longest-running commercial gallery in Australia after Australian Galleries in Collingwood (1956) and Melbourne’s Tolarno Galleries (1967). Born in Mount Eliza on December 1,1968, on the Nepean Highway, the old house and land were originally part of Manyung Farm, and the faux Tuscan castle that became synonymous with this gallery of note was built in the early ‘70s. Two years ago this was regrettably lost to its many supporters who cherished its uniqueness. Now on Mount Eliza Way in the heart of the

Village and providing street-to-art space flexibility and aesthetic, Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza will be on the move again next year as redevelopment of its existing gallery space takes place. To be launched later in 2019 or early 2020, the new gallery will display twice the number of paintings and sculpture and art will flow into the public spaces of this new development, which includes commercial offices, apartments and undercover parking. The new design remains sensitive to the original buildings with superb natural stone paving being incorporated. Coinciding with its temporary departure from the site, Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza will be offering special pricing on all artwork and offers gifts with purchase from November 23 until December 22. Conditions apply.

Manyung Gallery Group has exhibited a wide range of premium works over its halfcentury lifespan and is looking forward to the next 50 years of delivering exciting art to Peninsula and metro Melbourne-based clientele. Many artists have exhibited with Manyung for much of their careers, creating world-renowned work that will continue to be available for viewing and purchase from Manyung’s Malvern, Mornington, Sorrento and Flinders sites or from proposed pop-up galleries. Watch out for announcements on Facebook or visit the Manyung online gallery to view and purchase more than 2000 works from more than 150 artists. Known for exhibiting sculptures of substance, this summer sees a stellar show at Manyung Gallery Flinders of sculptor Stephen Glassborow’s exquisite, delicately fluid work. He has been exhibiting since 1978 and stands in collections across the world and will be on show from November 3. This is a real chance for serious collectors of standout sculpture to purchase and place very large premium work in their homes and courtyards. Manyung celebrates 50 years trading on 1st December 2018

In 1968 a gallery called ‘Manyung’ was born in Mount Eliza. The old house was originally part of the old Manyung farm and during the early 70’s the faux Tuscan castle was built. It’s time for a new you, and the highly trained experts at Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy know just how to revive and reinvigorate. They are passionate about healthy, radiant skin and believe that everyone deserves to have it. Using Medik8s, which is an award-wining, global skin care brand sold only by skin care experts, in combination with in-salon targeted treatments and home care instruction, they believe that anti-ageing doesn’t have to be complicated. The Medik8s CSA philosophy of using vitamin C plus sunscreen by day and vitamin A by night is proven to give substantial results for younger-looking skin. Vitamin C provides important anti-oxidant protection while stimulating collagen production and blocking the development of pigment for smoother, brighter skin, while sunscreen protects from damaging UV rays and is one of the most important steps in any skin care routine. Combine this with Vitamin A, which is pivotal to anti-ageing success because of its fast cellular renewal properties, and your skin will be smooth and glowing. Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy’s range of Medik8s Medispa treatments have been designed to enhance a client’s in-home skin care solutions. Vale Lionel Smith BY LIZ ROGERS

Mount Eliza lost one of its legends on August 26. Honouree member of the Kokoda 2/14th Battalion, lifelong member of the Ranelagh Club and gardening enthusiast extraordinaire Lionel Smith will be remembered as a man who loved Mount Eliza so much that after building a holiday house in Rannoch Ave in 1955, he decided to plant roots and never strayed. His son, David Wemyss-Smith, explains. “It was hard travelling up and down Nepean Highway into the city where he worked, but he loved the seaside village that was in its infancy back then — just one post office, a general store and a petrol pump. He was active in the early development of The Peninsula School, oversaw the building of the tennis courts at Ranelagh Club and ran tennis tournaments there. He was six years old when he first met my mother. He cradled her as a baby and then wrote to her as a young soldier. They married in 1947 and Mum, Greta, is still going strong. She’s 93. Dad was in his 100th year but 99 when he passed.” Lionel Smith was a salt-of-the-earth kind of guy who valued hard work, remained true to his principles and had a fierce determination. As one of seven children — his sister, Elizabeth, wore a starched bonnet as matron of the children’s orthopaedic hospital in Mount Eliza — Lionel was a proud veteran who came from a long line of tough, well-respected people. David remembers his father insisting that he get himself to and from school independently and work at the Ranelagh Club for a buck an hour mowing lawns and doing odd jobs. He also remembers Lionel being flown to Kokoda in New Guinea by Channel Nine and also the Prime Minister’s Department and being interviewed by the War Museum. “He received his telegram to report to the Victorian Scottish Regiment in September 1939 as an old Scotch College boy and commenced training at Mount Martha, which became Balcombe Army Camp. Six months later he enlisted in the 2/14th which fought against the Vichy French in Palestine and Syria up through Lebanon, and at 23 headed up the Kokoda Track in Papua New Guinea.” Rest in peace, Lionel.

Vital resource down the drain Recycled water currently being poured into Bass Strait should be used for fire protection and agriculture, according to Mornington Peninsula Shire Council. Mayor Bryan Payne said 350 million litres of class A recycled water from the Eastern Treatment Plant was being wasted every day. With predictions of one of the most dangerous fire seasons approaching, he called on all major political parties to commit money for a recycled water pipeline that would pump the recycled water up Arthurs Seat at Dromana and provide a gravity-fed water pressure system to vast areas of the main ridge and coastal villages. Cr Payne said a network of pipes distributing recycled water could be equipped with fire hydrants, allowing multiple roadside quick filling points for all trucks in a fire emergency, instead of isolated or hard-to-access tanks that may not be accessible during an emergency. “The predicted dangerous fire season also coincides with the massive increase in population on the Peninsula during the summer/Christmas holidays — from 150,000 to 250,000 people — when beachside camps and holiday homes are heavily populated,” he said. “The recycled water should be treated to be suitable for both agriculture and firefighting so any run-off into streams or the environment would not impact on the Peninsula’s flora or fauna, and the pipeline should be funded as a major infrastructure project.”

Heritage awards success for Mount Eliza Mount Eliza has come up trumps at the 2018 Mornington Peninsula Heritage Awards. Ramsay House at 29 Rendlesham Ave, Mount Eliza, won the Restoration of a Heritage Place category. The restoration was overseen by designer and builder Roy Grounds’ daughter Victoria, and as one of only a few remaining early houses at Ranelagh it is an important reminder of days gone by. Other awards were given to the Ranelagh Residents Association in the Excellence in Interpretive Signage category, which included seating throughout the Ranelagh Estate, and to the Mt Eliza Rotary Group in the Conservation of a Heritage Place - Environment category for the revegetation program at John Butler Reserve in Mount Eliza. Other winners included representatives from

FOURTH SUNDAY OF EACH MONTH

Time to train for kids’ fun run OK, kids, get out those runners and hit the track — the third annual Kids’ Fun Run With K163 is on Sunday, November 18. There will be plenty of fun for the whole family, and as well as keeping fit you’ll be doing your bit to help sick or injured children. Organised by the Rotary Club of Mt Eliza, the fun run’s major beneficiary will be Frankston Hospital’s paediatric unit as well as other Rotary community projects, and organisers expect 400 youngsters will pit their pace against the historic steam locomotive K163 at Moorooduc station. Open to kinder and primary school-aged children, the event will include eight runs based on age and distance and will close with a 4km family run or walk for mums, dads, grandparents, carers and friends. There will also be face painting, an animal farm, novelty characters, a drawing competition and a CFA display, as well as a sausage sizzle, drinks and ice creams to help keep those energy levels up. Invisible orthodontic treatment for adults and children Have you always been interested in improving your smile but been put off by the thought of traditional braces? Are you time-poor with the ability to attend frequent appointments difficult?

Now you can straighten your teeth conveniently, virtually invisibly and we can monitor your treatment remotely reducing the frequency of your appointments. The Invisalign system is a virtually invisible orthodontic treatment that uses a series of custom-made removable aligners created for you and only you. These aligners are made of a virtually invisible plastic that you wear over your teeth to gradually move them to the ideal position. Most people won’t even notice you’re wearing them, allowing you to keep your lifestyle during treatment. Treatment with Invisalign is suitable for most cases from mild to moderate complexity. Invisalign aligners look similar to clear retainers, teethwhitening trays, or gum shields. A series of Invisalign aligners are custom-made for you and you will replace each one approximately every two weeks until the final position of your teeth is reached. Advantages of Invisalign: • Virtually invisible • More comfortable with no metal brackets to irritate your gums or the inside of your mouth. • Removable so it’s easier to clean your teeth and maintain your oral health during treatment. • Fewer doctor visits. We can monitor your treatment remotely meaning less frequent dental visits. Call Hanks Orthodontics today on 9787 3849 for a chat about treatment options and what the team can do to help you achieve that smile you have always wanted. Moving toward a Woodleigh School Certificate At Woodleigh, we are working toward the development of a Year 12 transcript that better reflects the scope and depth of a Woodleigh Education.

While the development of independent, creative and compassionate young people has long been an area of strength for Woodleigh, our challenge is to find authentic ways of capturing and communicating student growth and achievement in relation to these critical 21st century capabilities. In order to meet this challenge, the school has started work on the creation of a Woodleigh School Certificate (WSC). This will be a digital transcript, designed to capture the depth and breadth of a Woodleigh Education. With only one in four students now being admitted to an undergraduate course based solely on their ATAR score, this move is both timely and future focused. It should be noted that this project does not reflect a diminished commitment to helping students achieve their personal best in Year 12, but rather a wider recognition that a simple numeric score does not adequately reflect the personal learning journey and accomplishments of students during their 13 years of schooling. In support of this groundbreaking project, Woodleigh is proud to announce the creation of two key strategic partnerships that will help us with this work. Mastery Transcript Consortium (MTC) During Term 2, Woodleigh became a member of the Mastery Transcript Consortium. The MTC is an international collective of secondary schools who are working together to develop alternative models of assessment and accreditation for graduating students. Their aim is to build improved ways of capturing the scope of progressive secondary schooling, and create new platforms for supporting student transition into further study and/or work. Deakin University In Semester 1, Woodleigh developed a strategic partnership with Deakin University focused on micro-credentialling and the development of capabilities for living and learning. Through the partnership, Woodleigh students will be able to earn globally recognised credentials in relation to areas such as leadership, communication and problem solving. Complementary to qualifications gained through the completion of a VCE or VETiS course, micro-credentials will provide an externally verified way of measuring and recognising the skills and capabilities for which Woodleigh graduates have long been known.

The Woodleigh School Certificate. Focused on a future where tertiary providers move beyond ATAR as a sole measure of student performance. MtElizaVillageMag

Pet health that brings happiness to the whole family

BY LIZ ROGERS

Walking through Frankstonite Brooke Todd’s living room, you may think you’re hearing voices. Squawky voices. Voices that just keep repeating themselves. And you’d be right. Brooke lives with two talkative feathered friends who love to chat and wave, wave and chat. Her one-year-old blue-fronted Amazon parrot Luna wolf-whistles, asks “What ya doing?”, says her own name and makes kissing noises. She also waves, turns around on command and could live until she is 80. Brooke’s 10-year-old conure parrot Tookie has green cheeks, waves and turns around, bobbing her head up and down when the music starts pumping. Brooke loves animals and especially birds. She used to have six cockatiels and has had various budgies. She also has two horses,

one of which she saved from the knackery, and works at the Mt Eliza Village Vet. “Luna is a one-person bird. Both of them mainly eat fruits and vegetables and need lots of stimulation. I don’t clip their wings. They are flight-trained and come to me when I call them,” she explains. “They spend lots of time outside in the warmer months. You’ve got to watch out for lice and worms and make sure they are kept busy. They absorb everything. Both Luna and Tookie love playing with their toys.” There are about 30 species of Amazon parrots, while conures belong to a diverse group of long-tailed parrots. Either way, Brooke swears that the entertainment they deliver is A1 for quirky companionship — and it seems she’s right. Who’s a pretty parrot? Luna and Tookie are. Just ask Brooke! Ph: 9708 8222

Two joyful years of total pet care Mt Eliza Village Vet’s first two years in the Village have been thoroughly enjoyable, thanks to the clinic’s wonderful clients and their delightful pets. It has also been a time of significant growth for the clinic, which celebrated its second birthday in September. The clinic now employs six staff, including two vets, and has been able to take on a local school-leaver to begin training as a veterinary nurse as well as providing work experience for veterinary and veterinary nursing students. It also now has a visiting specialist orthopedic surgeon able to operate at the clinic, a visiting specialist veterinary radiologist for advanced diagnostic ultrasound and a visiting specialist cardiologist when required. A lot of the clinic’s

patients have already benefited from having these specialised vets available right here in the Village. Many of the clinic’s ‘regulars’ also pop in for social visits while on their walks around Mount Eliza, which always ensures a happy atmosphere. After all, animals don’t have to come in just for examinations and injections when there are treats and cuddles to be had too! Isn’t it time you and your best friend did the same? This boutique business puts the personal touch into everything it does because this is a genuine family-owned and operated enterprise! Ryman for peace of mind

Peace of mind is vital when considering retirement options. When Ryman Healthcare was founded more than 30 years ago in New Zealand, the company set one simple standard — whatever it did had to be “good enough for Mum or Dad”. Today, Ryman Healthcare prides itself on being different, providing living and care options that suit every need, from independent living, assisted living in a serviced apartment, low care, high care and specialist dementia care. Its nine peace of mind guarantees include a fixed weekly fee for life guaranteed*, a deferred management fee capped at 20 per cent and no hidden costs when you move into the village or when you leave your apartment.

However, it’s in the transparency in which Ryman’s terms and conditions are set out that makes the real difference. Residents and their families have peace of mind that retirement is a chapter in their lives to be savoured and enjoyed. To find out more about the Ryman difference, or about the proposed Mount Eliza and Mount Martha villages, please phone Kay on 1800 288 299.
