Page Turner BY KRISTY MARTIN

Local author Karen Turner’s characters have taken on such a life of their own, even she is sometimes surprised by what they get up to. The Mornington writer of the Torn series says she recalls getting a shock when she realised one of her characters was about to die. “I thought ‘Hang on, I didn’t see this coming!’ “I had to go make myself a coffee and think about how the death would affect the storyline and the other characters, and also if I could do this to my readers. “But, in the end, I had to go with it because it was the natural progression.” For Karen, the narrative plays out in her mind before she writes it down, as if she is watching a film in her head. She visualises her characters in motion, often feeling like she is not in control, and this is how she can be surprised by their actions. With a career in finance spanning more than 20 years, Karen is an unlikely fiction writer. She is responsible for writing technical documents and financial news articles, but was bored one day and decided to pen a short story. That story, titled A Book By Any Other Cover, about a journey on the Frankston train line, won Karen the Society of Women Writers Biennial Literary Award. In 2008, she published her first book, a compilation of

short stories (“they just come out”) called All That and Everything. But the passion for writing has been there since Karen was a child – she used to create her own version of ‘Little Golden Books’ - and now she wishes she’d had the courage to become an author sooner. Karen’s first novel, Torn, is an historical romance set in 1808 England that explores dark side of human relationships set against the backdrop of war. It was well received, as was its sequel, Inviolate, released last year. Karen is now working on the third book, due out in 2016. “I’m at that exciting stage, where every waking minute is about the book. “I see it rolling out like a movie for me and I can’t wait to get writing.” While the book is “coming together nicely”, the author admits feeling pressured to get it right after the success of the first two novels. “I would hate to let people down.” When asked what advice Karen would give to aspiring authors, she simply says “start writing”. Karen’s books are available at most bookstores or can be purchased online. Visit www.karenturner.com.au or check out the Facebook page ‘Karen Turner- Author’.

Georgia hits the top The Victoria Racing Club (VRC) and Myer have officially announced Peninsula girl and talented equestrian eventer, Georgia Connolly, as the 2015 Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador. Georgia, 26, who grew up on the Mornington Peninsula has been riding since she was three, said she is delighted to combine her passion for horses with her love of fashion. “I’ve been an active VRC member for many years and have always loved horses, riding, racing and fashion. To combine all my life’s passions as Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador is a dream come true.” An experienced eventer, Georgia has recently embarked on a promising dressage career, and currently has four horses. Her family once had a share in Emirates Melbourne Cup runner: the creatively named Maythehorsebewithu, who ran fifth in 2001. As Myer Fashions on the Field Ambassador Georgia will join a star-studded judging panel to select the winning looks on all three days of the Women’s Racewear competition, including the Longines Award for Elegance on AAMI Victoria Derby Day. The Longines Award of Elegance is awarded at the most prestigious race meets in the world and is only fitting that Georgia will join the panel. Longines ambassador for Elegance, Kate Winslet recently judged the award at the world renowned Longines Prix de Diane in Chantilly, France. Kate said of elegance: “It’s all about feeling good in your own skin, and that’s hard. A woman who has that elegance has a sense of calm and inner happiness’’ – Longines Ambassador of Elegance, Kate Winslet VRC Chief Executive Simon Love said Georgia is the perfect candidate for the Ambassador role this year. “We are delighted to announce Georgia as this year’s Ambassador,” he said. “Georgia’s love of racing, horses and fashion ensures she will be perfectly placed to represent Myer Fashions on the Field, Australia’s largest and most prestigious outdoor fashion event.” “The Melbourne Cup Carnival is all about elegance, so my advice is to embrace ladylike looks with a fashionable twist” Georgia said. On Water Here’s one for all the thrill seekers out there.

It’s fast, it’s fun and it’s like flying and swimming combined.

We are talking about flyboarding – a worldwide craze that has just hit the Mornington Peninsula. With a water-jet powered board attached to your feet, you can soar above the water and dive under it like a dolphin. Be the first to experience the rush of flyboarding with Peninsula Flyboard, which commences operations from the southern end of Frankston pier this month. Flyboarding is similar to learning to ride a bike, water-ski, surfing, skating or any activity that requires a little balance. The rest of the world has already been blown away by this crazy, exciting and futuristic phenomenon. When you can do something as unique as hovering 10 metres above the water and then flipping, diving and shooting back into the air, it’s no wonder people are quickly getting hooked. Peninsula Flyboard is offering an introductory price of $149 for half an hour. Lifejacket, helmet and wetsuit will be provided, plus there is a 10 minute safety briefing before your 30 minutes on the water, where you will learn basic steering and control of the flyboard. SNAPSHOT OF HISTORY Watts Cottage Watts Cottage, located in Sorrento’s Pioneer Gardens, was built in 1869/70 and named after a seaside village in Devonshire, England. Built at a cost of twelve pounds, the original cottage had two rooms and an earth floor. The roofing frame was made from ti-tree bought from Rye, and the windows and doorframes came from Kauri washed ashore from the wreck of the Hurricane, which sank off Arthurs Seat in 1869. The walls were of wattle & daub construction, using local wattle & lime, a regular wall treatment in those days.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

After the Flinders Shire Council purchased the block of land for preservation, the cottage was renovated as a bicentennial project by members of the Sorrento Rotary Club. However, as work progressed, it became evident that much of the wall timbers suffered wood rot and needed replacing. This was done faithfully to the original building. On March 29, 1988, the cottage was handed over to the Flinders Shire. The cottage is situated on the corner of Ocean Beach and Melbourne roads, Sorrento.

FAST FORWARD THE FAIL written by Andrew Van De Beek illumin8 partners

Let’s be honest, failure is a scary word. We will all fall short at one thing or another during our lifetime, but if we always play it safe and never take risks, we will become the ‘if only’ generation. Be bold. Be ambitious. Be creative. Making mistakes may be the best thing for the growth of your idea, business or career. However, the timing of these mistakes can be crucial to your long-term success. During the early stages of development there is often less at stake, you are more nimble and have less baggage. As you get older you have greater responsibilities and a ‘fail’ can have much more far reaching repercussions. Being comfortable to have a ‘fail’ moment will often bring out the best and boldest ideas possible. Speaking of bold ideas, here are a few that have reaped huge rewards: • The US pharmaceutical giant CVS, who ceased cigarette sales at their more than 7600 stores last October. This decision alone would initially cost the company around $2 billion in sales, but one year on they have reported a 10% increase in revenue. • The local barista with a vision for a coffee experience. With the help of some friends, a factory-based cafe was created, roasting their own beans and giving away 20 cents from EVERY cup of coffee sold. Most of you would know how popular Commonfolk Coffee Company is. Now, only two years on, they are gearing up to open a sister store in McCrae. Both of these decisions were bold and had huge potential for failure. Without taking that first step, having a little faith and a whole lot of guts, these ideas and experiences would have never seen the light of day. So my encouragement to you is this: Fast forward the fail. Bring that bold idea out and give it everything you have got.

Life is too short to live in the world of ‘if only’.

Mt Eliza’s Troy secures award from Richard Branson Mt Eliza businessman Troy Westley has been invited to spend a weekend on Sir Richard Branson’s private island after winning the top prize in the 2015 Talent Unleashed Awards. Mr Westley, who developed the mobile app CareMonkey, was announced as the winner of the Best Start Up -Environmental Impact award for the Asia Pacific region and the overall winner. His prize will see him flown to Branson’s luxurious Necker Island in May to meet with some of the world’s leading philanthropists and entrepreneurs. Branson presented the award to Mr Westley at the awards ceremony in Sydney, described by the peninsula resident as ‘very flash and kind of like the Logies’. CareMonkey is a popular health and safety app used by schools, sporting clubs, camps and businesses that automates the gathering of medical information, emergency contacts and permission forms. OCTOBER 2015 (47)

It gives people with a duty of care instant access to emergency and medical data on mobile devices – even when they’re offline. “As a parent, you are forever filling out forms and it drives you insane,” explains Mr Westley, CareMonkey’s chief executive and co-founder, and a father of seven. “We have automated the process of collecting information from parents. “It’s a productivity solution and a health and safety solution.” While Mr Westley was thrilled to win the prestigious award, the chance to party on Branson’s Caribbean island was a bonus. The live pitch he did in front of the seven esteemed judges, including Branson, and 200 others about the benefits of CareMonkey, was reward enough for him. He is, however, looking forward to the gathering on the island, where attendees are encouraged to ‘solve problems and share ideas’. “I’m going to get some amazing connections with industry leaders from around the world… and hopefully

Jess from Scout’s Honour Tell us a bit about you and what you do: My name is Jess, and I am the owner of Scout’s Honour, a lifestyle store in beautiful Dromana. It keeps me quite busy, working seven days, but, I love it! It is exactly where I am meant to be. I am presently in the midst of preparing myself for my first Christmas and summer season! My spare time is spent with my partner and our two border collies, Scout and Colin, and our crazy cat Penny. I am a craft junkie, I love live music, shopping, cooking and drinking tea.

Describe your style: Denim, tees and a leather jacket are in high rotation in my daily wardrobe. I tend to wear a lot of black, grey and white, and I have a thing for shoes and leopard print... and leopard print shoes! Do you think Mornington Peninsula style/ fashion has a certain look or feel? I think that the peninsula style is so varied, but there is a relaxed feel throughout and, importantly, people own their look. What are a couple of your favourite blogs or websites and why? No matter how many tabs I have open at any one time, I always have Pinterest open. I spend far too much time there, just looking at and reading about whatever it is I am interested in, in that moment. I also follow the blog by Pip Lincolne, Meet Me at Mikes. I have for years now. I have such a girl crush on her and her outlook on life! Can you tell us one or two of your fave local spots? We are SO spoilt for choice on the peninsula. Be it great food, great shopping or stunning beaches, we have it in spades. Working seven days means early breakfast dates at The Milbri in Rosebud, who serve up sensational coffee (and cocktails!) I also love heading down to the Independent Wine Store in Rye after I close up in the afternoon. These lovely ladies are so knowledgeable about what they sell and they serve amazing deli plates that showcase so many local producers. Even better, it is available to take home with you! As for beaches, I am happy at any, regardless of the season. But I do have a soft spot for Somers. It feels so much more peaceful, even in the heat of summer.

Excellence Award For Day Care Educator If your children are being cared for by Danielle Davich, you know they are in good hands. The Mt Eliza family day care educator has been named Victorian winner in the 2015 Excellence in Family Day Care Awards. Danielle (pictured with Poppy, 9, Dane, 3, and Noah, 1) has been a family day care educator for the past six years and this is her second time taking home the state title after being named regional winner. It is also the fourth year in a row she has won the regional title (for Mornington Peninsula and Bass Strait). Family day care is early childhood education and care provided by qualified educators in a nurturing, home-based setting with smaller educator to child ratios. “Educators like Danielle hold a special place in the hearts of the families who nominated them,” says Family Day Care Australia chief executive Carla Northam. “To be named regional winner is recognition of Danielle’s dedication to providing quality early childhood education, OCTOBER 2015 (47)

but also to the wonderful and unique relationship between educators like Danielle and the children in their care.” The national winners will be announced in Sydney later this month. Photo by Ben Wolstencroft. www.morningtonpeninsulamagazine.com.au

Communities, recognising the great role seniors play in community life. “Mornington Peninsula Shire is pleased to support and promote the 2015 Victorian Seniors Festival activities on the peninsula,” Cr Colomb said. Local festival highlights include: film screenings, museum displays, golf tournament, volunteering workshops, Archibald Prize bus trip to Ballarat Art Gallery, senior citizens clubs activities, croquet and bowls open days, plus the 10th annual Ageing Well Expo at the New Peninsula Church, Mt Martha, on October 8. Despite their beachside upbringing, two Mt Martha siblings are proving they’ve got talent on the slopes. Gus and Max Broersen’s parents run a ski lodge up at Mt Hotham, so every winter the family spends the season living on the mountain. Gus, who is in grade six but started skiing at the age of four, has won numerous comps over the years. This season, he won first place for a male grommet in the Bread and Butter Rail Jam at Hotham, first place for a male grommet in the Cheese and Crackered Rail Jam and also came first in the Cross Race at Hothem. He qualified sixth out of 48 in the Junior Nationals Mogul Comp at Mt Buller, which was his first national comp with no moguls to practice on! Gus has received expert coaching from his head coach, former World Cup Skier Martin Rowley. He also had the opportunity to be part of the SSA Futures program at Perisher, where he spent a week with his slopestyle and half pipe coach (and elite trainer) Al Clay. Gus even got to spend time riding with and learning from his idols, Olympian Russ Henshaw and world champion Bobby Brown. Gus’s brother Max just swapped from skiing to snowboarding this season and placed third in the Male Grommet Boarder Cross at Hotham, his first event on a snowboard. His approach is a bit more laidback, and he loves a social ski with his mates followed by chips and gravy at The Bird rather than lots of training. These boys are definitely ones to watch.

Open for Open Day On a brisk September morning, the residents of Retirement Communities Australia’s (RCA) Martha Cove Village were joined by over 200 guests at a morning tea reception to celebrate the opening of the luxurious new Community Clubhouse. “The opening of the clubhouse is a significant milestone for every RCA village. The facilities at Martha Cove Village will enable the community to grow and the residents to engage in fantastic lifestyle initiatives, such as dinner dances, happy hour, coffee club and visiting entertainers – and we are doubly excited to have the building open for the Open Day weekend this year,” said RCA managing director, Andrew Philip. The clubhouse was officially opened by the 2014 Victorian Senior of the Year Healthy and Active Ageing Award recipient, Mr Geoff Stokes, who highlighted the importance

of being active – physically, mentally and socially – as part of ageing well. He is well qualified to do so; at 83 years of age, Mr Stokes walks and cycles every day, mentors many seniors in his local community to become computer literate, and volunteers with various community organisations in his hometown of Koo Wee Rup. Following the formal program, guests were invited to take a tour of the building, which is home to a club lounge, dining room, café, club bar and a residents’ kitchen. All of these facilities will provide residents with the opportunity to host events and community initiatives, both grand and small. Hobbies, as well as work and leisure interests, can be pursued in the craft room or the gorgeous and wellappointed library and computer room. In addition to hospitality and entertainment facilities, the clubhouse will host a variety of health and wellness groups

Cassie Louise

Tell us a bit about you and what you do: My name is Cassie and I create jewellery and baby apparel for my labels ‘Cassie Louise’ being my first and middle names and ‘Baby Cassie Louise’ (baby apparel by Cassie Louise) – www.cassielouise.com.au. I import gemstone beads, unique charms and independent designer fabrics from around the world and create all my designs from scratch in my home studio in Mount Eliza. My first business venture was when I was around eight years old selling handmade friendship bracelets to friends at primary school and progressed to designing and sewing custom hoodies for friends at high school, eventually selling my creations on Chapel St and in boutiques around Australia and the world. I also have a ‘real job’ working full time, two weeks on two weeks off, in operations at a helicopter airport. Describe your style: My style is minimalist casual with a of bohemian edge, a little rock ‘n’ roll at times and hints of florals and leopard. You will usually see me in leggings and an oversized white t-shirt and thongs or sneakers and I use accessories to add a pop of colour and personality. I have a huge collection of scarfs from around the world and jewellery from both my previous and current collections. As much as it doesn’t usually reflect in what I wear, I have a massive love for

anything and everything bold and neon, which definitely shows in my baby apparel collection and random items around my home! Do you think Mornington Peninsula style/ fashion has a certain look or feel? I think the Mornington Peninsula has a beachy/casual style reflecting the amazing location and chilled vibe of where we live. What are a couple of your favourite blogs or websites and why? At the moment I’m loving the minimalist pastel vibe of the Eye Spy Milk Bar blog and Hello I’m Handmade is really inspirational with great tips for small businesses! I am obsessed with Instagram, it has been my number one source of inspiration and the best small business marketing tool. I am also pretty proud of my man for recently launching his own online shop arcart.bigcartel. com featuring his original artwork and prints. Can you tell us one or two of your fave local spots? I consider myself a bit of a foodie (yes I take photos of my food) and I love discovering new places on the peninsula. We’re so lucky to have such a diverse variety of cafés and

restaurants on our doorstep. Currently I’m obsessed with Store Fifteen in Mornington, the no.4 green smoothie and smashed avo toast is amazing! On my days off in summer I usually grab a coffee and bite to eat from either Mr Curtis or Via Battisti in Mount Martha and spend the afternoon at the beach across the road. BREAKFAST The Winey Cow in Mornington PIZZA DOC for true Italian style pizza and incredible Italian produce AND The Pizza Wagon if I see them at markets/events! GROCERIES Tully’s in Mount Eliza but always end up spending so much more than I planned! COFFEE Commonfolk, Flock, or the Franklin Coffee caravan at markets or at the beach in summer JAPANESE Kazu on Main st Mornington is always a favourite with the girls, delicious food and it’s BYO! SHOP Evergreen clothing in Mornington and I have just discovered Greedilulu just off Main St, absolutely LOVE everything in this shop!! WALK Bushrangers bay – this coastal walk to the beach is amazing!

The Peninsula’s New Neighbour Long-time Neighbours star and new Mornington Peninsula local Ryan Moloney talks to Kristy Martin about being ‘Toadie’, becoming a pilot, sustainability and sheep castration… For those of us who remember Ryan Moloney’s debut on Neighbours as the teenaged undercut-toting ratbag Jarrod ‘Toadfish’ Rebecchi, it is hard to believe the actor is now in his mid-30s and father to two primary school-aged children. The popular TV character, best known as ‘Toadie’, has been gracing our small screens for the past 20 years and has lived through a hell of a lot in those two decades. He’s been a lawyer and a wrestler called The Lawman, got married three different women, been shot in the back and recently became wheelchair-bound after a freak jumping castle accident. Fortunately for Moloney, who moved to the

peninsula with his wife and two kids back in February, life is substantially quieter. He spends his time fishing from the Flinders pier, wining and dining at Port Phillip Estate or Merricks General Store and enjoying the local produce from Red Hill Bakery. “Life’s good,” Moloney says. It’s quite a change from East Malvern, where the family used to reside. In fact, Moloney recently spent time on a friend’s property where he helped castrate sheep. “It’s, uh, a very different lifestyle down here,” he chuckles. The Moloneys (Ryan, wife Alison and their kids Erin, 9, and Jack, 7) are building a house on 11 acres at Merricks – enough space for horses and chickens and the place they decided to call home after searching for properties in the Yarra Valley.

“It (Mornington Peninsula) is the best kept secret in the world,”

Going green October 10

says the actor, when asked what brought him to this neck of the woods. “It’s got all the things we love – beautiful countryside, the bays, fishing, food and wine. “And the people are all so nice and very laid back.” Moloney’s children attend Balnarring Primary School (“Any school that’s got koalas in the playground has to be good, right?”) and he is currently helping other parents promote the community’s sustainability fair coming up on Saturday October 10. In fact, it was the environmental focus of the school that won Ryan and Alison over, as they are both big believers in sustainable

Sustainability is about living within the means of our environment and reducing one’s use of the earth’s natural resources. It’s about using what we need to live now, without jeopardising the potential for people in the future to meet their needs. This is the premise behind the Balnarring Community Sustainability Fair being held at Emu Plains Racecourse on Saturday October 10. The event aims to inform, educate and inspire people to work towards a more sustainable future.

living. As far as work goes, it might be hard to imagine 20 years in the same job, but Moloney’s career has seen him forge lasting friendships with castmates and he describes his filming days as “going to work, mucking around with great people and coming home”. But he hints there could be a career change in the air (pun intended). He has obtained his commercial pilot’s licence and hopes to soon become a flight instructor. “Who knows,” he quips, “I might be flying out of Tyabb Airport one day.” Catch Ryan Moloney on Neighbours 6.30pm weeknights on Channel ELEVEN.

The fair will run from 9am-2pm and will showcase locally made and grown foods, organic wines, plants, handmade jewellery and crafts, and eco-friendly products such as water tanks and solar panels. There will be local bands performing throughout the day. The event is a major fundraiser for Balnarring Primary School, an environmentally focused school with its own wetlands. The students have spent time creating arts and crafts from recycled materials to sell at the event. Profits from the fair will go

towards sustainability programs and maintaining the Balbirooroo Community Wetlands. The Balnarring Sustainability Fair has been held once before, back in 2012, attracting 3000 visitors and raising $15,500 for the school. Head to www.bcsf.com.au or find the event on Facebook for more details. PICTURED: Balnarring Primary students Pia and Hazel Murray, Anna Saunders and Jack and Erin Moloney with Neighbours star (and parent) Ryan Moloney, getting ready for the Sustainability Fair.

South East Water has officially opened its new headquarters in Frankston, bringing 600 staff members to our region. We spoke with the company’s managing director Kevin Hutchings (pictured) to find out more. Tell us a bit about South East Water. South East Water provides water, sewerage and recycled water services to more than 1.65 million people, through 21,000km of pipework. We service more than 3640 square kilometres from Port Melbourne to Portsea including 273km of coastline. What was the reason behind the decision to shift headquarters to Frankston? We had several sites including our head office at Heatherton, so it made sense to bring all staff from these offices under one roof. Moving to a building which we own, on land we own reduces our operating costs but also brings all of our staff together into a dynamic and inspiring work environment in Frankston.

( 28

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Tell us about the new building. South East Water partnered with internationally recognised architect BVN Donovan Hill to create a 5 Star Green Star designed building that celebrates our strong links with the natural environment, the creek and the bay. Our office is one of the first buildings in Frankston to face the waterfront and really connect the community with the boulevard. The architect designed the building to embrace Kananook Creek Boulevard and reflect the coastal nature of its surroundings. The retail and open space on the ground floor is being purpose-built for the local community. How has the move been received by the local community? Local businesses and the broader community have provided such a warm welcome from day one of our arrival – it’s fantastic to see such positivity among the Frankston community and I know our hundreds of staff have appreciated that. Needless to say we are very excited about our move to the area and we are looking forward to getting to know the community even more.

Are our dog facilities

up to scratch? Dog owners are campaigning for better signage and facilities when it comes to leash free areas and dog beaches across the peninsula.

Consistent signage, extensions to current dog beaches and the provision of poo bags and dispensers are among suggestions put to council by the Peninsula Dog Walkers Association. The association, which has over 1000 members, also hopes to see a mobile app developed that would clearly show where leash free areas are located across the shire. The PDWA says people are ‘confused by the laws, times and regulations’ and this is causing friction between dog owners and rangers. “We would like to see the Mornington Peninsula Shire work with PDWA on a test environment, on how to manage dog friendly beaches and areas in the region and then begin to roll out a delivery of consistent mapping and signage. “We want to be part of a solution that works for everybody.” According to PDWA, there are 27,000 dogs registered on the peninsula and the shire collects an estimated $1 million in revenue from registration fees. The association wants to see council allocate funds to amenities for dogs such as taps, drinking bowls, dog poo bags, dispensers

( 34

and leash areas for dogs to be safely secured. The group has created its own ‘Pick up Your Poo’ campaign to encourage responsible waste disposal. They also want to see an expansion of the dog-friendly beach at Camerons Bight in Sorrento to the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron, except on regatta days. “The PDWA acknowledges that beaches are for everyone to enjoy and we are doing our best to work with the foreshore committee and the Mornington Peninsula Shire to be a voice for everyone.” Mornington Peninsula Magazine asked Mornington Peninsula Shire whether these issues were being considered, but their response was simply that the shire ‘encourages responsible dog owners to enjoy leash-free time with their dogs at the designated leash-free areas’. “Leash-free activities may be restricted to specific areas and/or times in some reserves to facilitate a range of uses for the community in shire-managed parks and reserves,” said Paul Bonnici, team leader of shire rangers. “The shire welcomes opportunities to discuss use of shared spaces, including foreshores, with the community and can be contacted on 1300 850 600 or 5950 1000.” To contact the Peninsula Dog Walkers Association or to become a member and have your say, you can find the group on Facebook.

Life as an au pair on the peninsula Debbie Appels came to Australia from the Netherlands to improve her English.

The 21-year-old Dutch woman is now working as an au pair for a family in Mt Eliza and has also been trying her hand at various local sports. After graduating as a hospitality manager for hotels and restaurants, Debbie decided she needed to enhance her English to achieve her goal of securing a management role at a large hotel. “The main reason that I came to Australia is to improve my English. “Besides that, it gives me a terrific opportunity to travel and see more of the world. “Australia has so much to offer and I would love to explore this country.” Debbie was initially searching for hotel internships when she stumbled across the idea of working as an au pair.

She found the website AuPairWorld, created a profile and began to connect with potential host families. She is currently living with a family in Mt Eliza and cares for two boys, aged eight and 10. “I make sure they get up on time for school, eat their breakfast, do their homework and so on.” When the kids are at school, Debbie does some light household chores before picking the kids up and cooking their dinner. “My experience with the boys so far is that are are fun and honest and they often try to make me laugh. “For instance, one of the kids got a hold of my phone when I was texting my boyfriend back home. “He sent a few hilarious voice messages to my boyfriend.” Debbie will stay with the family until February before heading off to explore Queensland and

NSW. With the encouragement of her employer, Debbie decided to try some sports as a way of meeting new people. She tried local volleyball and took up women’s football. “It is amazing to play such a typical Australian sport. “I am also thinking about joining a women’s hockey team next season, but we’ll just have to see what I am up to at that moment in time.” As far as the culture shock of moving half way across the world, Debbie hasn’t had too much trouble adjusting. However, “my initial instinct to drive on the other side of the road was definitely a challenge and I accidentally drove on the wrong side once!”

BODYBUILDING – Norwood House

There are plenty of preconceived notions about the bodybuilding industry and fitness modelling world. But one thing is for certain – these competitions are becoming increasingly popular among the general population as the world turns to exercise and healthy living. Frankston woman Brooke Hubbard wants people to know that bodybuilding can improve a person’s self-confidence and body image, their mental and physical strength and discipline. However, it is also a lot of hard work and preparation for competition takes months. “We take our bodies and minds to their limits, and sometimes to our breaking point,” Brooke says. “However, we do it for the passion and the love of the sport. It’s the underlying desire to be better, fitter, stronger.” Brooke was thrilled to place fifth in her first ever INBA (International Natural Bodybuilding Aust) fitness comp, in June. “I have never felt more confident, fit, proud and healthy,” she says. Despite her nerves on stage, Brooke

powered through her routine, held all her poses and left feeling empowered. “I now feel motivated to inspire others to get their health and fitness on track.” Brooke says people who don’t understand bodybuilding can sometimes have negative or unrealistic views about it. “People just assume that once you are in the body sculpting/bodybuilding industry you only eat chicken and broccoli, that you take steroids and are trying to ‘get massive’. However, what people don’t know is we eat six meals a day, which is a variety of healthy foods, we don’t train 24 hours a day, we do not take steroids and there are different levels of fitness modelling.” Brooke’s preparation for her bikini level comp was made up of five training sessions per week -weights and cardio – and two rest days. She says she has always been into keeping fit, but listening to friends who were in the bodybuilding game was what initially sparked her interest. “I got to the point where I really wanted to push myself and give it everything.

What’s it all about? “So, slowly I started to change my exercise routines and my eating habits and then sat down with my coach to set some goals, a new diet and training plan.” Brooke was supposed to compete again, at the INBA Victorian State Championships last month, but a back injury forced her to withdraw. Understandable, given that her health is her top priority. Brooke’s advice to others wanting to take up bodybuilding is to pick a great coach and a supportive team. “I honestly do not think I could have done all of this without my amazing coach Nicky Jacobson and my team, The Ultimate Angels and Warriors.” Her final tip: “Enjoy the process!”

The different levels of bodybuilding Bikini Model: A softer, beach-body compared to the Fitness Model Class. Competitors should not have a 6 pack abs. Judged just in bikini. Fitness Model: Aim to have 6 pack abs. Figure International: Judging based on the Symmetry round only. Emphasis is on balance and stage presentation. Figure: Judged along the lines of bodybuilding but figure competitors should have less bulk. Bodybuilding: Competitors should have the most bulk and muscularity of any of the female divisions, be well defined and toned. Source: inba.com.au

Secret Sauce, which launched in August and hit 8th place in iTunes last month, is James Eling’s brand new initiative helping business owners in the restaurant industry capture a bigger slice of the market. While the founder and owner of Marketing4Restaurants is using the podcast to get into the cars of time-pressed restaurant owners around the world, James said he’s using Bartercard to drive entry into the US market. “You can already go to the US and purchase a meal on Bartercard,” he said. “When I was there, I walked into a Bartercard restaurant and paid for alligator tails and an oystertini (an oyster martini) without opening my wallet. “So it’s a market that’s already opened to the digital currency and the fact that people in the US are downloading our podcast

is incredibly exciting because it’s a market that’s vastly different to Australia.” James recently travelled to Bartercard’s head office in the USA where he is already taking up clients on the Australianbased digital currency. He said Secret Sauce, a free tool sharing tried-and-tested strategies to attract new customers, is receiving a steady uptake in the US, a market which accounts for 26 per cent of its downloads. “The tips and strategies we share in the podcast are tried and tested approaches we’ve implemented, and we’ve packaged them in a way that lets business owners listen to them on their way to work.” James has been using Bartercard in Australia for the last seven years to save approximately $350,000 in his business, and has attracted more than $500,000 worth of business on the digital currency since joining. Secret Sauce is available on iTunes. To find out how Bartercard can benefit your business call Bartercard Mornington Peninsula on 03 9773 8177 or 0410 023 453, or visit bartercard.com.au.

At Kings we believe that learning to swim is an education, not a sport, and that every child deserves to learn the life skill of swimming. We’ve been specialising in fast tracking children to become “safer-faster” for over 25 years. It’s a swimming program that develops a child’s independence and confidence in the water. Our purpose built centres provide a stimulating and quiet environment to fast track learning for children from 6 months of age. Small class sizes, regular assessments and highly trained staff provide the means to maximise learning the skills to keep your child safe when in and around water. Our water temperature is a constant 33 degrees. Our pool has variable depths to meet your child’s needs and abilities. All pool water is filtered continuously 24/7. Easy payment plans, generous family discounts and loyalty programs make learning to swim easier for all the family. Lessons are available 7 days a week to help out busy parents.

Mothers Gather Mt Eliza Pre-School for Mindful Parenting exceeds national standards Melissa Rowe is on a mission to ensure families have the essentials tools to live in happy, healthy and nurturing homes.

Mt Eliza Pre-School has been rated as ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’ under the National Quality Framework (NQF).

After 14 years in her career as a social worker supporting children and families in complex situations, Melissa knew she had to do something to assist families who felt they needed guidance with their parenting. Her business, Kids Nest, was born from the need of a compassionate service that can support parents and children struggling with the everyday dynamics and issues that families face. Melissa uses mindful parenting techniques to empower parents with the knowledge and skills to navigate parenting in the modern world. Mindful parenting has been defined by Jon Kabat-Zinn as “paying attention to your child and your parenting in a particular way: intentionally, here and now, and non-judgementally.” Recent studies show that mindful parenting interventions are increasingly being used to help prevent and treat mental health disorders in children, to reduce parental stress and improve marital functioning and co-parenting. Melissa is working with parents who are overwhelmed, confused and frustrated and mothers especially have sought out her counselling support services, wanting to deepen the connection with their children, address behavioural issues and their own mental health issues such as depression and anxiety. Run every six weeks at Beach Lane in Carrum, the affordable ‘Mindful Mama’ sessions will guide mothers of all ages and backgrounds through the role mindfulness plays in parenting and give attendees simple but effective steps to bring this daily practice into their households. Visit www.thekidsnest.com.au, call 0421 337 719 or email thekidsnest@gmail.com for more info.

The National Quality Standard (NQS) sets a national benchmark for the quality of children’s education and care services across Australia. As the NQF progresses, every service in the country will be assessed on its progress in meeting the quality standard. Services receive a rating for each of the seven quality areas in the NQS, as well as an overall rating. An overall ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’ rating is given to services that have four or more quality areas rated Exceeding, including in two of the key quality areas. “The Staff and Committee at Mt Eliza Pre-School have worked hard to earn an ‘Exceeding’ rating across all seven of the quality areas and we are proud of the service we offer to our pre-school community,” says Nicole Kuc, committee of management secretary at Mt Eliza Pre-School. “In particular we were commended for our educational program, our wonderful indoor and outdoor play areas and the friendly and respectful relationships with children, staff, committee and the entire pre-school community. “We would like to acknowledge all of the past committee members, staff and families who have contributed so much to the pre-school over the years”. The NQF is guided by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). To find out more information about the National Quality Framework and service ratings, visit the ACECQA website www.acecqa.gov.au

The festival will see 35 buskers located at sites across the town centre and around the Rosebud Plaza. In the middle of town, between Rosebud Parade and Ninth Avenue, there will be roving acts and skills workshops. Performers will be judged on how well they entertain the crowd, the originality of their act and the quality of their performance. The competition even has an under 14s category, to encourage all the talented young locals to get involved. The four judges, who all have all backgrounds in the arts, will be seeking out the outstanding emerging and established talent.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

BY PENNY IVISON Sam Michelle has been painting for over 17 years but only recently was she able to leave her successful career in finance and proudly call herself a full time artist. Sam will be bringing her floral works to the Dromana Art Show this month and apart from peonies, her other specialty is the female form. Like many artists she finds inspiration everywhere, but nature and beaches in particular help her tap into her artistic side. This made international plus-size model Laura Wells a perfect choice for Sam’s recent portrait entry into the Black Swan Prize in Perth. Laura Wells is an environmental scientist and founder of non-profit organisation Ocean Advocates and is especially outspoken when it comes to the protection the Great Barrier Reef. You may have heard of Wells recently when she was involved in a media ‘debate’ about whether or not she qualified as a plus-size model. Her response was that, yes she does (size 14), but this is her healthy and natural weight and it is the negative connotation surrounding the plus-size label that we need to change. Sam found that not only is Laura Wells an example of the beauty of the female form that has always been her muse, but they share the connection to our natural world and a desire to protect it that comes through in both their professional lives. Sam Michelle’s art will be available to purchase at the Dromana Art Show, which begins on October 30, along with the work of other talented artists such as Jean Sheridan and Christian Gundesen. Author Amanda Pipella’s story is testament to the fact that mammograms save lives.

At age 51, the Mornington Peninsula mother of two knew something wasn’t right and booked herself in for an overdue mammogram. With no family history of breast cancer, she was acting on instinct and to silence the voice inside her head and heart. This gentle prompting saved Amanda’s life. After the dreaded words “we have found cancer”, begins Amanda’s journey through hope and despair, chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation, the Mornington Peninsula and, finally Paris. Through her novel ‘From Cancer to CanCan’, Amanda takes the reader deep into the physical, emotional, and spiritual life of one who is forced into the world of cancer. You will laugh and cry with her as you learn what really happens behind the scenes as Amanda navigates her way through so many foreign and unnatural experiences to become a breast cancer survivor. Amanda’s book will encourage, inspire and educate. You will love standing at the top of the Eiffel Tower with her waving over Paris, going to her final destination of Moulin Rouge and reading about the impact that the “Cancan” really had on her and her husband. From Cancer to CanCan has been forwarded by Tim

Costello, chief executive of World Vision Australia and Suzie Botross, speaker, author and learning and development expert. Amanda’s story is raw and real, and once you pick it up you will not be able to put it down. From Cancer to CanCan will be launched at the New Peninsula Baptist Church at 370 Craigie Rd, Mt Martha, from 7:30pm on October 16. You can purchase a copy on the night, or at Farrell’s bookstore, Mornington, at bookstores nationally or online for $24.95. www.amandapipella.com

Equine Escape at

Manyung Gallery BY LIZ ROGERS If you’ve got a passion for all things horse, then you’ll love Manyung Gallery’s show Equine Elegance running from October 3 to November the 1. Featuring works by Lew Brennan, Christina Metelli, Julie Hutchings and Conchita Carambano plus Manyung Gallery newcomer, sculptor Deb Moroney, this exhibition explores horse form in all its glory. Contemporary artist Julie Hutchings began painting horses when her husband was a jockey and she has been ever since. She mainly paints with oils or uses mixed media and her work shows Australia wide. Currently a stockroom artist with Manyung Gallery, her nudes are feminine and fluid. There are six of her equine pieces in the Equine Elegance exhibition. Local artist Deb Moroney likes to think big. This retired teacher spends most of her time sculpting wire, welding and working with mild steel. She began playing around with art materials after her children had grown up and now can’t stop producing! Her life-sized horse sculpture will be appearing outside Manyung Gallery for the

duration of the exhibition and inside you’ll view more of her smaller pieces. So visit Manyung Gallery this October for a real taste of equine beauty - see you there. Artist Feature

Domenico de Clario BY ANDREA LOUISE THOMAS

Contemporary artist Domenico de Clario defies definition. His holistic inter-disciplinary practice touches on so many points – performance, installation, painting, philosophy, music and poetry. De Clario was born in Trieste, Italy and moved to Melbourne as a child in 1956. More recently, he relocated to Dromana to be near his mother at the end of her life. While there, he opened the museum of innocence; a space dedicated to a quality he feels has been lost in modern society. He’d posted a song list inviting the public to select a soundtrack for their own personal experience of the space. Then he serenaded them with their songs. His current exhibition at Mars Gallery is titled: walking slowly downhill (sleep, the gorgeous nothings, seven as the reasoning of numbers and the beginner’s song.) Each

part of that title represents a strand of the exhibition. Each has deep significance. A lifetime academic (PhD in Performance Studies/Victoria University), de Clario has an extensive CV boasting over 300 exhibitions, international residencies, grants and senior level tertiary education posts, but these are not the focus of his artistic existence, de Clario is engaged in the mindfulness of being present. With this in mind, he’ll leave Dromana midSeptember to embark on a three month solo pilgrimage, Walking Downhill Slowly, traversing the length of the Murray River from its source at Mt. Kosciusko to its mouth at Goolwa, SA as part of the Mildura Palimpsest Biennale. This journey will be an artwork. De Clario’s exhibition is at Mars Gallery, 7 James Street, Windsor until October 4. Walking Slowly Downhill will be webcast live at: www.mildurabiennale.com

The magical story of the world’s favourite nanny arriving on Cherry Tree Lane will be triumphantly and spectacularly brought to the stage with dazzling choreography, incredible effects, beautiful sets and costumes and unforgettable songs. The stage version of Mary Poppins is brilliantly adapted from the wonderful stories by PL Travers and the beloved Walt Disney film. PLOS is thrilled to welcome back to the company Nadia Gianiotti who portrayed Morticia in our season of The Addams Family as the efficient and practically perfect nanny, Mary Poppins. Bert the jack of all trades - chimney sweep, pavement artist and all round nice guy - will be played by Andrew Perry and this pair will sing, act and dance up a storm as they take you through this delightful musical that will charm the whole family. PLOS is once again putting its technical team to the test to bring to the Frankston Arts Centre stage as many magical ways to stage this timeless tale and we are sure you will find our Mary ‘practically perfect in every way’. Salon des Refusés A National Trust NSW, SH Ervin Gallery travelling exhibition

The official alternative selection to the Archibald and Wynne Prizes 2015, for the first time in Victoria exclusively at the MPRG The irreverent and playful rabble-rouser of the Archibald’s, the Salon des Refusés comes to Victoria for the first time. Showcasing ‘the ones that got away’, the exhibition is a prized selection of the humorous, innovative, mad, bad and dangerous entries that were too fabulous to resist. To be shown exclusively at the Mornington Peninsula Regional Gallery, the works torn from obscurity include portraits of Australian of the Year, Rosie Batty, gardening dynamo Costa Georgiadis, popular author Jackie French, chef Armando Percuoco and acclaimed designer Catherine Martin. A larger-than-life sized sculpture of a homeless man is a focal point of the Wynne ‘rejects’. The Salon des Refusés was initiated by the SH Ervin Gallery in 1992 in response to the large number of works entered into the Archibald and Wynne Prizes not selected for hanging in the official exhibition. Each year a panel is invited to go behind the scenes to select an exhibition from the many works entered but not chosen for the official awards. The criteria for works selected in the Salon are quality, diversity,

humour and innovation. SH Ervin’s Salon des Refusés exhibition has established an excellent reputation that rivals the selections of the ‘official’ prize exhibitions and is often cited as a more lively and discerning selection.

MT ELIZA ART & DESIGN SHOW Mount Eliza’s annual art exhibition returns this year on October 23 to 25 with an incredible collection of new talent.

Opening Night – Tickets $25 Friday October 23rd www.trybooking.com/idtd Saturday Oct 24 10am – 5pm Sunday Oct 25 10am – 4pm

Hosted by Mount Eliza North Primary School, the exhibition provides visitors with a unique opportunity to discover and purchase original and affordable art in a relaxed, community based setting. Art aficionados can look forward to browsing an extensive selection of traditional and contemporary painting, jewellery, photography, textiles, sculpture and ceramics, while enjoying a barista made coffee or glass of wine. The exhibition fosters local talent while maintaining the high calibre of exhibits that has become synonymous with this exhibition. There are four feature artists this year; Peninsula Art Space painters Christine Sharp and Amanda Steadman, Deb Moroney (sculptor), Gina Walters (photographer) and Georgie Cunningham (jeweller). Christine has always been involved in the arts and arrived on the peninsula via Adelaide and Sydney. Her New Zealand background has been an influence on her work both in style and content. Amanda was born and raised on the peninsula, spending her youth painting and drawing while growing up on her family’s country property. Together they created Peninsula Art Space to teach creative art classes and workshops. Deb is a Mornington Peninsula-based artist who discovered her passion for working with wire and metal while she was an art teacher in 2007. Gina is also based on the peninsula after moving here seven years ago from her birthplace in Yorkshire, UK. She has had a camera in her hand from a young age following her stepfather’s passion for filmmaking and photography, adding to this at 18 years of age with formal training. Georgie’s fascination with hand-crafted silver jewellery began at a young age and gained inspiration from her extensive travel throughout Europe, the Middle East and India.

Gala Opening: Friday October 23 Limited to 400 guests, the gala opening is a much anticipated social event on the peninsula with live music, gourmet finger food and an exceptional selection of wines. As well as having the first opportunity to purchase works, guests are able to bid on unique items in an auction hosted by our real estate partner; Peninsula Estate Agents. Numbers are limited so purchase early at www.trybooking. com/idtd. Gala night admission is $25. Your ticket permits unlimited re-entry to the exhibition throughout the weekend. Visiting the Exhibition Following the gala opening, the weekend times are Saturday October 24 from 10am-5pm and Sunday October 25 from 10am-4pm. Adult entry on Saturday and Sunday is $5 and children are free when accompanied by an adult. The popular Café d’Art will open all day Saturday and Sunday, serving morning and afternoon teas and light lunches with wines by the glass. Are you concerned about your smile? Do you look in the mirror and wonder if your teeth could be straighter or more appealing? Do you have problems with your bite and wonder if you would benefit from orthodontic treatment? Concerned about wearing braces?

We at Hanks Orthodontics are here for you. We can advise on whether orthodontic treatment would be of benefit and work closely with your dentist to make sure you get the smile you have always dreamed of. We take time to discuss with you different types of braces that are aesthetic, and move teeth in a gentle way. If you have always been curious as to how your smile would benefit from

orthodontic treatment, Dr Hanks and the team at Hanks Orthodontics don’t want you to wonder anymore. Straight teeth and a great smile have the ability your impact your social life, career and your self-confidence. What better time to than springtime to take your first step towards feeling better about yourself?

ORTHODONTICS AND SPORTS It’s springtime and again time to remind our patients at Hanks Orthodontics to protect their faces and teeth while playing sports. If you are participating in sports, it’s important to have a proper-fitting mouth guard. Mouth guards can prevent chipped or broken teeth, lip and cheek injuries. If you are wearing fixed appliances, please remember DO NOT use a regular mouth guard or mouth guards that are softened in warm water and moulded to the teeth.

It’s Spring - Time to Smile!

Dr Hanks recommends using a mouth guard that is fixed braces friendly, which it should say it on the box, or you can buy one from our office. Having a mouth guard can make the difference between losing your teeth or not, and because many of our patients who play high school sports have jaws that are still growing, last year’s mouth guard may no longer fit as it should. Please feel free to ask Dr Hanks and his staff any questions you have regarding mouth guards. Enjoy the sports and springtime! Seventeen years ago, ‘The Pink Room’ was incorporated at Michelle-Ann and it is an area of the business Michelle-Ann is very passionate about as it specialises in catering for women who have experienced breast surgery including mastectomy and lumpectomy. Michelle-Ann is one of the largest stockists of breast forms and mastectomy bras in Melbourne; they have five specialty fitters who have trained extensively with many years’ experience, headed by Veila Maclean, a breast cancer survivor herself. Arthritis sufferers find benefit in thermal mineral bathing With one in three Victorian’s today being affected by a muscle, bone or joint condition which is expected to increase by an alarming 43% by 2032; no wonder more and more suffers are turning to preventative and alternative methods to alleviate their pain. Hot springs soaking is a common prescription given by many licensed doctors throughout Japan and Europe for a wide range of arthritic conditions. The mineral waters and hot springs therapy are part of preventive medicine that is widely recognised, encouraged and are a major part of routine medical care. In Australia, this science is not very well known. Peninsula Hot Springs sees a number of arthritis suffers who bathe almost every week. With all the benefits that sport delivers - physically, mentally, emotionally and socially – it is little wonder people love being active.

Unfortunately, injuries can happen and it is important to seek proper treatment in order to get you fully recovered and back on the field, court or track. “Injury management requires a co-operative team effort between a patient and their therapist to achieve the optimal result and fastest possible return to activity,” says physiotherapist Adam Godfrey. Specialising in sports injury assessment, management and rehabilitation, Adam has recently launched Sports Sense Physio on Mornington’s Tanti Avenue. With a Bachelor of Physiotherapy and seven years’ experience working on the peninsula (plus heavy involvement with local football, soccer and netball

clubs), Adam knows how frustrating sports injuries can be and how they can impact on a person’s everyday activities. This is why Adam prides himself on developing close working relationships with his patients to achieve individualised patient goals, helping them return to the field, workplace or functional daily activity. In addition to sports and work related injury advice and management, Sports Sense Physio’s services include spinal injury symptom relief and recovery, post orthopaedic surgery rehabilitation, ergonomic bike assessment/setup, and biomechanical and postural assessment. Sports Sense Physio works with your private health fund, the Department of Veterans Affairs, Medicare, Work Safe Victoria and the TAC to achieve the best result for you. PURE

Familiar Stylists Reunite At New Salon Pure joy is that amazing feeling you get when you step out of the salon with a stunning new haircut or colour. Like its name suggests, the new Mornington salon Pure Joy Hair Lounge is all about feeling good. Conveniently located at the back of Main Street (at the former Mr John’s Topcuts and next to new Wisteria Boutique) with ample parking, this fresh new salon has a cool and relaxed vibe. Owner Corinne Robertson’s 17 year’s hairdressing experience began with an apprenticeship at a popular Mornington salon, she went on to work in Melbourne’s Little Collins Street and then spent four years in the UK, as a creative director for an exclusive Aveda salon based in London. Corinne’s passion for hairdressing is sparked by the interaction with her clients, helping them to feel good about themselves, while at the same time getting to explore her creativity and artistic talent. Corinne is joined at Pure Joy by her sister Verity Matthews and former work colleague and good friend Stacey Anderson. All three are very experienced stylists with impressive CVs to their names. “I am so thrilled to be working back with these talented stylists,” Corinne says. “Stacey and Verity are very easygoing and they both have bright, fun personalities. “I couldn’t have asked for a better team to be joining me in this new business venture. “We plan to approach every client with fresh eyes and by listening and caring about each individual, we aim to create the perfect look to suit your lifestyle.”

HAIR

OPENING special Cut & colour for $110* By also taking the time to guide you through caring for your hair at home, Pure Joy will enable you to look your best even between hair appointments. All of this and in a warm, friendly, relaxed environment! Pure Joy uses and stocks ‘Davines’, a natural Italian brand that includes ammonia-free colour and a boutique hair care range supplied in recycled packaging. The salon is open from Tuesday to Saturday and there is an exclusive offer for new clients during October (see ad for details). Celebrating Individuality PURE When it comes to eyewear that is as individual as you are, Main Street Eyecare is leading the way.

Stocking primarily Australian designers, this is one business that recognises the importance of having truly unique eyewear to match your personal style, just like your clothing or footwear. With stunning frames from Aussie names Carter Bond, Jono Hennessy, Paul Taylor and Brendan O’Keefe, not to mention bespoke spectacles by Adelaide designer Roger Henley, there is something for everyone at this established Mornington optometrist. Main Street Eyecare has also thrown huge support behind Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s Beautiful by the Bay luncheon, being held at Mornington Yacht Club on October 7, supporting the Breast Cancer Network of Australia. OCTOBER 2015 (47)

Owner Kay Tyrie has donated two pairs of stunning designer sunglasses to be auctioned at the event – a $595 pair of Tom Ford sunnies and a colourful pair of Paul Taylor shades valued at $395. She will also speak at the sold out event. Kay, who lost her mother to ovarian cancer, knows how important it is for cancer patients to look and feel their best and says eyewear plays a big part in that. She has assisted many chemotherapy patients who have experienced changes in their eyesight. “I know how important it is to have something to make them feel good and it is rewarding for me to be able to provide that.” Main Street Eyecare A: 57 Main Street Mornington P: 5975 3235

your october stars

by Stephanie Johnson

Aries

This time of year often sees you considering your loved ones’ needs rather than your own. This is because the Sun is sitting in your opposite Zodiac Sign of Libra. This is not a period for headstrong actions but rather one for mediation and diplomacy. Patience and consideration are required.

Taurus

Lifestyle changes may be required this month. October sees you assessing your health and wellbeing and making adjustments if needed. This is the ideal month during which to review your eating and exercise habits. You are also keen to make improvements in your home.

Gemini October sees you at your sparkling best. You are quite the social butterfly, flitting from one fun-filled activity to another. Your mind is active and you are creative. The more that you can revel in childlike imagination the more that you are likely to shine this October. Cancer

October sees the Cancerians of the Zodiac questioning a few matters close to home. You are likely to be wondering exactly where you belong. If you are comfortable in your own skin then you are likely to enjoy the month of October. If not, you are ready to make changes for the better.

Leo

Your mind is active right now. You are keen to explore your short-term options when it comes to projects, neighbourhood matters and life skills. A creative project may be a productive way to channel your intellectual powers. However, you may also enjoy chatting with siblings, neighbours or online pals.

Virgo

The planet Jupiter has moved into your Zodiac Sign heralding good fortune. Now another lucky planet, Venus, transits Virgo from October 9. In other words the planets are aligned in your favour right now. This is your time to shine. You need to set aside any fears and count your blessings.

Libra

This time of the year sees you putting yourself first for a change. Your habit of looking after everyone else first needs to be shelved for a while so that you can focus on selfdevelopment. You can enjoy pleasurable activities with loved ones, or settle back and delight in your own company.

Scorpio

It is time to batten down the hatches. October is your month to plant so that you can harvest later. October sees you on a tight budget and undergoing a time of reflection rather than one of action. It is time for you to focus on your own hopes, dreams and wishes.

Sagittarius

The serious planet Saturn has moved back into your Zodiac Sign heralding some serious plans for the usually fun-loving Archers. You are entering into a period of responsibility and possibly re-structuring one or more areas of your life. This month sees the focus on your life purpose.

Capricorn

October sees you forge ahead with professional goals but not without some adjustments. Firstly, you need to face a few fears or dust off some skeletons in the closet. Once you have done this then you are ready to shine in your career. Meditation or a brief retreat may be in order.

Aquarius

Now Aquarians can broaden horizons and reach for the stars. World affairs, philanthropic causes, environmental issues and the plight of refugees are just some of the issues that may spark your passion this month. You may study, read, and trawl the internet or travel to foreign lands in order to broaden your mind.

Pisces

Seasons come and seasons go. This month sees something changing in your life. You let go of one thing and move towards another. This is likely to be connected with your professional life. You may change roles in your current job or leave one workplace and start anew somewhere else.

SPRING IS HERE

Many therapists simply buy equipment and products with no real detailed knowledge of the science behind the hype, and deliver underwhelmingly, with no visible lasting result. Knowledge is the key, Sue says. “I have spoken to clients who have had IPL or microdermabrasion to correct a skin concern, spent a fortune, and still have no results - this is due to the therapist not investigating the problem, and not understanding the best solution option.”

LOOK GOOD FEEL BETTER This is your Mt Eliza Beauty reminder to get ready for spring!

Stop in for shellac toes, semi-permanent makeup, electrolysis, luxurious one hour facials, tinting, waxing, skin brightening, or a quick pick-me-up peel after the long winter. Fix those eyebrows with our brow specialist at Mt Eliza Beauty Therapy’s Eyebrow Bar and, of course, don’t forget your organic spray tan. Next door at Advanced Skin & Laser Clinic, Adelle and Sue are serious about skincare by tailoring your treatment to suit your individual needs.

It is imperative to understand your skin and why these conditions are reappearing or not reacting to certain treatments.

You’ve just got to try this treatment! Clear + Brilliant is a unique, non-invasive treatment suitable for all skin types. It utilises proven fractional laser technology to address and help prevent early signs of ageing – without the downtime of more invasive treatments. Treatments are comfortable, fast, effective and affordable, ranging from $300-$350 depending on skin condition and clinic. It is an in-between treatment, filling the gap between over the counter or spa treatments and more intense laser offerings such as Fraxel. There are two treatments available. Clear + Brilliant This treatment focuses on skin texture, skin elasticity, minimising pore appearance and providing longer-term improvements through collagen remodeling. Clear + Brilliant Permea This newer treatment is optimised to achieve brighter, more even skin tone and enhanced skin permeability for added benefits of topical skincare products when applied immediately after treatment. The skin is left visibly illuminated.

The most common effects from treatment are minor redness and swelling, which are typically minimal and subside quickly, so it is the perfect skincare solution for your next big event. Mornington Peninsula Magazine’s Julie Saville was offered a complimentary treatment at Peninsula Dermatology in Frankston and was thrilled with the result. “Dr Hugh Roberts discussed my skin concerns and recommended a Clear + Brilliant treatment as I wanted radiant, younger-looking skin. “I couldn’t be happier with the experience and outcome.” The number of treatments required is tailored to your individual concerns and skincare desires. Visible improvements are seen after just a few treatments, so do yourself a favour and book your appointment today. Cheese Company Enjoys Taste of Success

Eight cheese varieties by local company Blue Bay Cheese have been honoured in the Royal Melbourne Fine Food Awards 2015.

Blue Bay’s Kefir, Goat Kefir and Goat Fetta each received gold medals while its Quark, Goat Chevre and Chevre with Dill were awarded silver. The company’s Cow Fetta and Vintage Cheddar Citrus & Ginger received bronze medals in the prestigious competition. Celebrating a decade of crafting artisan cheese on the Mornington Peninsula, the owners of Blue Bay Cheese, Andriy and Taras Kogut, recently hosted an event at Veraison to reflect on their achievements. Joined by the Federal Minister for Small Business, Bruce Billson, the event also promoted the company’s latest product - kefir milk. Blue Bay kefir milk is a rich source of calcium, protein and vitamin B and with probiotic levels up to 10 times more effective than most yoghurts, kefir is attributed to making a difference in the healing process of many modern diseases. The Koguts’ decision to start producing kefir has been widely applauded, with Coles supermarkets now selling their product.

MODERN AUSTRALIAN COOKING Rob has returned inspired by the Indian spices of Goan style cooking, which is lighter and tastier than traditional Indian food, encorporating lots of coconut and spices. After riding through Bordeaux in France, UK and India, Rob has returned with new enthusiasm for encorporating French and Goan flavours in his menu. He visited the Island of Eldaran where fresh oysters were offered everywhere!! Rob’s crayfish pot is absolutely spectacular! Always on a mission to meld new aromatic flavours and styles to his restaurant, Rob can’t wait to add earthy provincial flavours to his dishes this spring! Contemporary Japanese Celebrate at Sammons Teppanyaki this spring with 10% off! For a fun, exciting and interactive dining experience, you can’t go past Sammons Teppanyaki. Sammons Teppanyaki is the first and only Japanese teppanyaki restaurant operating on the Mornington Peninsula. Their specialty is, of course, Japanese cuisine, teppanyaki; sliced, diced and cooked freshly in front of the customer’s eyes. Teppanyaki typically involves cooking food on an iron griddle; the word itself comes from the words teppan, meaning iron plate, and yaki, which translates as broiled or fried. The chefs at Sammons know the ins and outs of this method of Japanese cooking, and they do it with style and flair. Dinners at the restaurant are full banquet-style, including appetisers, right through to desserts. Meal options include chicken, lamb and beef, seafood and crayfish, vegetarian or combinations. There is also the Sammons Special, which includes everything. Any dietary requirements are catered for, and there is even a children’s menu. Dinner is served from Wednesday to Sunday nights from 5.30pm, with each table seating up to 10 people, so grab a group of friends and head along. Be sure to book your seats and arrive on time, as Sammons Teppanyaki runs on a timely schedule. The venue is fully licensed. Sammons Teppanyaki can also cater for private functions during the day or night, and they can open the restaurant for Sunday lunches to cater to group bookings (minimum numbers apply). For more information, contact Sammons Teppanyaki on 9770 0775, or book online at website www.sammonsteppanyaki.com.au. Mention that you saw this in Mornington Peninsula Magazine at the time of booking for 10% off when you dine during the month of October. Valid on Wednesday, Thursday and Sunday nights. If you haven’t already tried this amazing style of cooking, hurry up and make your booking today. Chop chop!

Let your cares float away BY THE DISCREET DINER

Meandering through the tea-tree blossoms and bright yellow wattle flowers is a sure sign it’s spring and therefore the perfect time for a hot springs experience. It always amazes me the vision and the design of this place, how you can get lost through the private tracks leading you to the myriad of ponds of choice. The frogs were singing along the way, while we sat back and let the 38-degree water ease our bodies and rest our muscles. The sun glimmered as we then made our way up to the next bathing pool alongside the cave spa, where we were enwrapped by silence and steam. This place is certainly special, well-organised and very popular. We then meandered back to reception, where we had the choice of snacks, coffee and lunch. Such a great way to start the day, meet friends for an experience, spoil yourself with some ‘me’ time, or simply relax and let it all go. La Veneta ~ Mt Eliza’s Little Italy After an Italian experience? Look no further than La Veneta in Mt Eliza. This contemporary cucina screams all things green, white and red and offers an ambiance that is reminiscent of your favourite Italian holiday (or the one you will be taking with Annette in the near future, but we’ll get into that later!)

Annette Went-Panozzo knows her stuff. Her two chefs follow her family recipes, plus rework modern methods to create satisfying and tasty Italian fare. Think classic Venetian meals like sweet and sour sardines with polenta, traditional meatballs and the very popular mushrooms stuffed with goat’s cheese, truffle fries and home-made arancini. Delizioso! “We are extending our hours over summer,” says Annette. “Our function room upstairs caters for up to 50 and downstairs our bi-folds open out so the aroma of Italy can spill out on to the street.

“You can enjoy a pre-dinner drink with tapas from 4pm onwards or dine al fresco ‘til late. Everything is made in-house from scratch.”

Special boards rotate regularly and gluten free meals are available, plus there’s gourmet pizza all day every day. Born in Australia from Italian parents Annette’s food is as Italian as Italian can get and so are the all-inclusive tours she conducts to Italy in conjunction with Canadian Bay Travel. “I take up to 12 people throughout Italy each tour. We go to places you won’t be seeing on those big bus trips.” All tours are organised through Canadian Bay Travel. Just give them a call on 9787 9477 for a copy of an itinerary for 2016 or pop into La Veneta Restaurant to get the travel bug taste!

The Top Choice for Catering Food is something everyone has in common. It brings people together, makes people happy, is used to mark special occasions and can be a great conversation starter.

She is also an avid Gourmet Traveller reader and is always dining out. “I’m always creating, always learning.”

Chef Jacqui Jones knows the importance of great food and is dedicated to bringing only the best to the Mornington Peninsula.

Jacqui’s creates a la carte, buffet, canapé and corporate menus comprising local, seasonal produce.

As director of Two Top Chefs catering, Jacqui brings fine dining to her clients, specialising in intimate dinners and cocktail parties.

But she is happy to discuss individual requirements and can tailor a menu to suit the client or event. She can even have her dishes wine matched to local wineries.

“It’s like having a restaurant come to you, with no dishes involved,” Jacqui explains. “The guests don’t have to drive anywhere, they can be completely immersed in conversation and there is a little bit of theatre involved because they get to see the cooking done right in front of them.” Jacqui has been trained by renowned chefs and formerly worked at Montalto and Stillwater at Crittenden before making the shift to catering 12 months ago. Her passion for food is fierce - she recently travelled to Greece, Italy and Switzerland, attending food expos and gaining work experience in European restaurants.

Oh, and her desserts are to die for! The best part, for Jacqui, is hearing the compliments from her clients and seeing their enjoyment of the food she has created. “I love what I do,” she says. Two Top Chefs P: 0412 707 703 W: twotopchefs.com.au E: jacqui@twotopchefs.com.au

Prime waterfront dining BY THE DISCREET DINER

The De Santis family know plenty when it comes to food, being involved for over 30 years. A modern chic restaurant with a rustic feel, The Rocks has prime position right near the Mornington pier. On this sunny afternoon, I finally made the choice to indulge in the six grain salad with Mt Martha spinach, raisins, almonds, pinenuts and pistachio honey yogurt. This was an ideal choice to complement the saganaki of keflaograviera with sweet balsamic and then the guilty pleasure of the bowl of chips. The staff were attentive and cheery and the outlook was surreal. There is a more enclosed section at the back, with more of a restaurant feel if you desire a more protected and private experience. Rob, the owner, is a happy, no-nonsense professional and runs a tight ship. The kitchen presents like a trendy New York open kitchen, the ‘see what’s going on’ style which I love. This place offers breakfast, lunch and dinner and comes with an amazing array of choices, small plates, raw bar, from the

TILE AND GROUT CLEANING

Ceramic Floor Tiles

Here’s how to get your porcelain and ceramic floor tiles and grout to gleam and sparkle like new, with our tile cleaning, grout cleaning service. Our clients are absolutely astounded when they see this system actually work on their own floors, and you will be too. This exciting system does not just remove years of built up dirt and grime from tiled floors, it also removes detergent residues from the grout lines. Detergent residues can make the grout lines appear discoloured and patchy. In fact, detergents actually make the grout more porous, thereby collecting more dirt. This spoils the look of your floors and leads to them resoling relatively quickly.

Porcelain floor tiles

By removing detergent residues, as well as soils, grout lines return their original colour, and, with a little care, you will be able to keep your floor looking cleaner for longer.

Property Home Garden

Well, here we are at the start of the magical growing season of spring, where we will be growing all of our favourite fruits and veggies. The cooler months are now hopefully well behind us and the soil gradually warming to the occasion. If you haven’t quite finished preparing your garden beds it’s not too late, though you will want to get cracking. Now is the perfect time to sow seed for your first warm season crops; beans, corn, cucumber, eggplant, pumpkin, squash, tomato and zucchini can all go in now along with continual sowings of our year-rounders like beetroot, broccoli, carrot, lettuce, radish, turnip, lettuces and other leafy greens. And don’t forget the spuds. Try also sowing some seed to bring some flowering colour (and bees and other beneficial insects) into the garden. Some favourites include sunflowers (of which there is a great range available), marigolds and borage, both great companion plants. If you’re not too keen on raising from seed you can purchase seedlings from most good nurseries in your area, however the range you can get from seed is both

vast and economical. Another thing to keep in mind while choosing a new home for your seedlings is that some plants grow together better than others. The practice of ‘companion planting’ involves grouping plants that will support each other’s growth, deter or confuse potential pests and make the most of your available soil space. Common examples are planting basil and marigolds around tomato plants, sowing onions with carrots and the popular ‘three sisters’ (corn, beans and squash), but there are many other planting combinations that work well in the garden. It is well worth sourcing some information on companion planting if you are interested. Mixing up your plantings can lead to some really creative and productive gardens. Many of the crops that we grow during this period are heavy feeders, meaning they will require some additional nutrition during the season. Pumpkins and corn are two of the hungrier plants, but it is worth coming up with a feeding strategy for the whole food garden to keep it ticking along. There are many

commercial organic fertilisers on the market that would do the trick, however it is just as easy, and cheaper, to source and make your own. Liquid manures and compost teas are the most effective food to deliver to your plants as they will be taken up by the roots quickly and provide the plant with nutrient in a useable form. You can make liquid manures in a number of ways, for example soaking cheap ‘farm-gate’ manures in water for a few weeks, or doing the same with your own compost. My favourite is a combination of worm juice from the trusty worm farm mixed with a green compost tea made from comfrey, nasturtium and stinging nettle leaves. This blend is high in nitrogen while having a good mix of other essential and micronutrients. You can apply your liquid fertiliser once a month during the growing season. Be sure to water in well if it is a strong brew. With good preparation, considered plantings and care, your fruits and veggies should thrive this season.

Happy gardening. Drew Cooper, Edible Gardens www.ediblegardens.com.au
