Exclusive pink argyle diamonds In August 2005 I was looking to establish a unique new jewellery business in Mt Eliza, when I met the late John Richards of Hall & Hall Real Estate. John leased me a small shop in Ranelagh Arcade, where I remained for the next 5 years, before I moved out in October 2010 to our current location. So Gouzlan has now been established over 11 years in Mt Eliza. Over the years we have constantly updated and expanded our unique jewellery collection and we are still going strong in sales, repairs and remodelling. The latest addition to our jewellery collection is the Blush Pink Diamond Jewellery range. This range is crafted from 18 carat gold with an exquisite blend of fine white diamonds and Australian natural Pink Diamonds,

and is available in rings, pendants and earrings . These Pink Diamonds which are mined from the Argyle Diamond mine, East Kimberley in Western Australia are the rarest and most precious diamonds in the world with the supply of these diamonds becoming even rarer. Gouzlan is now an exclusive stockist for Blush Pink Diamond Jewellery on the Mornington Peninsula, in fact we are one of only a handful of stockists in Melbourne. Water worlds

She’s the one

Water: free and full of space and dense dreaminess. Barbara Tyson is a tad obsessed with this wonder of nature and her large works are fuelled by layers of detail, technique and the need to delve below the surface. Her oil paintings are worked on simultaneously. The seductive subject matter and paint merge together to pull you under into a world where the movement of light on the canvas takes hold. Time stands still but keeps moving in a Tyson painting. She works with transparent oils and opaque paints to create scenes that change with you. They rush at you from the wall, just like the water, landscape or figures falling within. “I’m always painting women in water - emotion. I’m more of a kinaesthetic painter. I feel the process rather than see it”, explains Tyson. You can view this 2011 Archibald Prize finalist’s work (with her painting of the Governor General of Australia Quentin Bryce AC) and Victorian 2013 Salon des Refusés finalist (with her Hilton Melbourne South Wharf) at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza from October 15 and swim in its wonder.

Rosebud’s Monica Adams draws with charcoal and paints with oil. The female form and all its perfect imperfection is the subject of her latest work, which screams feline ferociousness and silent seduction. You can see a flicker of the French painter Toulouse-Lautrec or recognise Liza Minnelli’s Cabaret character Sally Bowles in an Adams painting. Her girls are based on 1940s and ‘50s female icons and have long, long lashes from which they view the world, and their lips are full and red. Her carefully crafted and meticulously layered Beauty Icon series, which will be exhibited in Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza from November 19, explores the many hidden layers of woman through pattern, drizzled and slashed colour and mastered technique. Adams comes from a fine art background, with a Bachelor of Fine Art Honours from Monash University,

so she knows how to draw. She also knows how to link colour and subject matter with method to create contemporary art that is both beautiful and accessible. “I paint the pattern first,” she says. “I’m a bit obsessed. I’m influenced by Indonesian prints, old Italian tiles … in an abstract sense. Then comes the figurative drawing in charcoal. I never really know where the pattern and figure will rest, which is part of the fun. I’m usually working on six paintings at a time.” Adams also runs children’s art classes at Manyung Gallery Mount Eliza on Sundays and will be throwing open the gallery’s doors to offer free classes on Sunday, November 20. No bookings are required and all kids are welcome. MANYUNG GALLERY MOUNT ELIZA A: 60 Mount Eliza Way, Mt Eliza T: 9787 2953 W: manyunggallery.com.au

For relief of your pain

Release your pain Do you have constant or intermittent nagging pain? You may have fascial dysfunction. Your fascia is a layer of highly flexible, fibrous connective tissue that surrounds muscles, blood vessels and nerves, and binds structures together while allowing others to slide smoothly over each other. Its continuous matrix encases you from head to toe and gives you your shape, posture, range of motion and flexibility. Your fascia adapts to compensate for repetitive action, scarring and injury. Very often we don’t look after ourselves to allow the fibres to revert to normal, resulting in tightness, restriction, pain and tension throughout the whole body, often in places that are seemingly unconnected. Bowen Therapy balances the body’s structure and stimulates blood flow. Bodhi Tree Therapies specialises in the fascia, using Bowen Therapy and massage techniques to restore function and alignment. Owner Theresa Klos has more than 14 years’ experience in offering real relief from recurring fascial dysfunction. Release your pain today and phone for a chat. Styled right every time Euro Collections has been outfitting women for approximately forty-seven years. This Mt Eliza institution caters for all female forms from the most petite through to plus sizes and offers a complete styling experience you won’t get anywhere else. Yvonne explains; “We can make anything. Clients can come instore and select straight from the rack (think European and Australian designs full of texture, colour and individual style) or can extract different design elements from a selection of pieces to create their own look. My full time tailors have been with me for twenty years and are experts. Every Euro Collections piece is completely wearable. We also import beautiful comfortable shoes, if I’m not comfortable in the shoes, then no-one else will be either.” Yvonne selects all the pieces herself. She used to travel to Europe twice a year but now stockists come to her. Her new ultra feminine Italian Elisa Cavaletti range is full of soft flowing fabrics, sheer layered cottons and lace making them ideal for more casual weddings or sultry summer sojourns. Again the separates combine to create pure peninsula magic, while the new Italian Patrizia Pepe range is an explosion of colours, prints and embroidery. With two new ranges for the fuller figure (up to size twenty four with nothing over two hundred dollars), Yvonne has all women covered. Her selection of shoes, hand bags/wallets, jewellery and scarves plus the right styling advice makes Euro Collections a must visit when in the Village. This summer sees a blaze of colour come to Euro Collections. Feminine tailored garments float in fine metallic and textured lace while directional and flirty dresses playfully hover above the knee, at cocktail length or in long designs. Jumpsuits are featured in silks, jerseys and cottons and fabulous new silk tops and beaded caftans

Mt Eliza Music Festival line-up to entice BY ELINE COX

In the heart of summer there are a few things we can’t get enough of, and music festivals are definitely on top of the list. On Saturday, February 4, 2017, the heart of Mt Eliza Village is where you and your friends can gather and enjoy the Mt Eliza Music Festival. The event takes place throughout the village - in cafes and restaurants, three outdoor stages and eight busking locations, where more than 70 musical acts will perform. Expect bands, soloists, DJs, family entertainment, buskers and much more, day and night! The first line-up announcement tells us we can expect artists such as Josh Cashman, Reuben Stone and the beautiful Thando Sikwila (the 23-year-old from ‘The Voice’) and the major musical production Dreamgirls. More are to be announced.

30

Issue 38 • Spring/Summer 2016

The Zimbabwean Thando moved to Melbourne only five years ago, from Canberra, to pursue her career and passion. “It’s the feeling of making a genuine difference in someone’s life and seeing people through tough times and celebrating the great ones. I’m lucky to be a performer and experience bringing that kind of joy to people,” Thando says. She’s never been to the Peninsula and is looking forward to experiencing a new part of Victoria. “And of course to perform! You guys can expect an energetic set reminiscent of Aretha-style belts, a sassy backing vocal section and a groovy band that plays for the Gods. You’ll find it hard not to bop along with us.” The Mt Eliza Musical Festival kicks off from noon and entry is free. Stewart Lockie For Briars Ward

Born and raised on the Mornington Peninsula I believe in the community having a strong voice advocating for the issues that are important to them. If elected, as well as representing the residents and ratepayers, the projects I’d like to pursue during the four years are, upgrading, sporting facilities and shire amenities, all abilities family friendly access path from Mills Beach to Mt Martha, and protecting the Green Wedge. I’ve listened to many people in our community and the common thing I hear is we need a change, so here is our chance to make a change and make a difference. The Briars Ward needs a strong voice on Council to represent the Mount Eliza area. For too many years the Council has ignored our concerns and lost focus on its role as a provider of key community services.

Rebecca Taylor is a Mount Eliza local and founder of the Kunyung Residents Group.

For Briars Ward

I am a truly independent candidate who will provide that strong voice for our community and refocus the Council on your needs. As a former Councillor (20082012) for the Mount Eliza Ward I have the experience, skills and understanding of Local Government processes to make a difference on Council. I seek your Vote 1 and continued support.

As a mother of 4 young children, a scout mum, a football mum and secondary school humanities teacher, Rebecca knows how important good community facilities like green open space are for young families. Rebecca established the Kunyung Residents Group to save the South East Water Reservoir. Public land that is home to the only stable frog population left in Mt Eliza now earmarked to become a housing estate, “Healthy habitats create healthy neighbourhoods, it’s important that children see nature in their own backyards.”

Rates down! Rates down! Rates down! Over the period 2004 to 2014 the Mornington Peninsula Shire Municipal rates on the Mornington Peninsula increased by 89% and last year 2015-2016 they again increased by over 5%. Council debt also increased to over $40 million in recent years. This has to stop! I seek a mandate from the rate payers to force the rates down on the Peninsula. As a Mornington Peninsula resident and employer for over 35 years I will donate my Council annual payment of up to $28,900 to The Bays Hospital if elected.

Ritchies’ wins right off the top shelf Ritchies IGA Mt Eliza is celebrating after winning the IGA Bakery Department of the Year and IGA Grocery and General Merchandise Department of the Year. The IGA Awards of Excellence were presented during the Metcash Food and Grocery Expo on the Gold Coast earlier this year and are testament to the hard work and dedication of bakery manager Kerry Whitney and her staff and the grocery and general merchandise department of the Mt Eliza store. Metcash chief executive of supermarkets Steven Cain said the store had performed “exceptionally well”. “The store’s dedicated work for the benefit of its local community, staff and the independent retail grocery industry has been deservedly recognised with

40

these awards.” IGA said the store’s success should also provide a benchmark for the other 1455 independent supermarkets across the IGA retail network. It said the bakery department “places a strong emphasis on offering a huge range of artisan breads, cakes and other freshly baked delicacies”, with the grocery and general merchandise department “provides customers with easy access to gourmet and international lines which are a unique point of difference and attraction within the store”. The awards were presented to Ritchies chief executive Fred Harrison and Mt Eliza store manager Christine Shepherd. They were judged on a range of criteria including customer service, community contribution, department excellence, brand values, sales, profits, merchandising, shopper experience and the store’s overall performance. Special honour for Ritchies CEO

Ritchies IGA chief executive Fred Harrison has been inducted into the IGA Hall of Fame. IGA has been inducting individuals into the Dr Thomas S Haggai IGA Hall of Fame Award since 2001. The award recognises outstanding contribution to the Australian independent retail grocery industry. Mr Harrison, who has worked in retail for 41 years, said he was still passionate about the role independent retailers played in their communities. “Independent retailing is in my blood and has been part of my life since I was a teenager. It has enabled me to be involved with many aspects of the community and give back to local clubs, schools and charities, which I believe is a very important part of Ritchies IGA today,” he said. The induction took place at the annual IGA Awards of Excellence on the Gold Coast. IGA has a network of 1455 stores.

Academic excellence plus much more

College helps students stay two steps ahead Mount Eliza Secondary College principal Angela Pollard recently came across this quote: “The world is changing at such a rapid rate that waiting to implement changes will leave you two steps behind.” “There is no doubt that the world our young people are moving into is not only different to the one we entered after school, it is actually unknown,” Mrs Pollard said. “The imperative for schools, therefore, is to avoid being ‘two

MtElizaVillageMag

steps behind’ and to make the significant changes necessary to truly support students to not only have success while at school through a strong academic focus, but to be prepared for success beyond this phase of their lives. That means that an approach to build capable young people who are generous, empathetic, creative, intuitive, service-minded and problemsolvers should be part of what a school offers. “As parents and as educators, our work is to acknowledge the changing environment and to prepare students for their future, rather than for the one which was relevant for us.” MOUNT ELIZA SECONDARY COLLEGE A: Canadian Bay Road, Mt Eliza T: 9787 9888 W: mesc.vic.edu.au

Next chapter for ‘Moondah’ revealed: a retirement village

‘Moondah’ Estate’s next chapter has been revealed as a retirement village, but it will continue to operate as a Melbourne Business School conference venue until December 2017. The sprawling 8.9 hectare waterfront property stretching from Kunyung Rd to Moondah Beach has been bought by New Zealand’s largest retirement village operator, Ryman Healthcare, for a reported $40 million. Once settlement is completed, Melbourne Business School will continue its operations at the Mt Eliza campus until December 2017 under a lease-back arrangement. Moondah Estate was built by James Grice in 1888 as an opulent Victorian residence of 42 rooms and later owned by Sir Reginald Ansett who turned it into a luxury hotel. Melbourne Business School has owned it for the past six decades and put it up for sale this year after deciding to move its executive education programs to new state-of-the-art facilities at its Carlton campus. Ryman Healthcare managing director Simon Challies has announced Ryman will preserve ‘Moondah’s’ historic features. “This is an outstanding site in terms of its natural beauty and it is going to make an absolutely stunning place to live for retirees who love the

50

Issue 38 • Spring/Summer 2016

peninsula,’’ he said. “We think it has great potential and we are also conscious that ownership of such an historic site is also a privilege. It will be great to see Moondah Estate get a new lease on life as a beautiful home for retirees.’’ Mr Challies said the company’s research showed there was a shortage of retirement living options in Mt Eliza and on the wider Mornington Peninsula. The new village will include independent living apartments and aged care, including specialist dementia care, and Ryman will employ more than 100 staff. “We hope that our plans will provide a comfort to older peninsula residents with concerns about the future that they can stay in the area they love and get the care they need,’’ Mr Challies said. Ryman has promised to work closely with the peninsula community to design a village in keeping with the surroundings. Ryman operates an integrated care model, which includes independent living apartments, assisted living and aged care on the same site. Ryman Healthcare opened its first retirement village in Melbourne in 2014 and Moondah Estate is its fourth site in Australia. ‘Moondah’ is subject to a restrictive covenant that only allows it to be used for education, religion, religious-based aged care or primary production. Having a great smile means so much more... At Hanks Orthodontics, we know that smiling and laughing can have a positive effect on your well-being. Research has shown that there a number of health benefits contributed to smiling and laughing. Smiling can reduce stress levels and lower the heart rate while performing difficult tasks. In a recent study, participants who were instructed to smile had lower heart rate levels after recovery from stressful activities. In addition to improved health, these simple facial expressions and common human behaviors can have a distinctive positive affect on other factors in all areas of your life. When you smile and laugh, a number of physiological changes occur in your body, mostly without you being consciously aware of it happening.

Did you know...? 1. Laughing expands the lungs, stretches the muscles in the body and stimulates homeostasis. 2. A good laugh can be an effective way to release emotions. 3. Smiling is an attractive expression, which is more likely to draw people to you rather than push them away. Dental aesthetics is an integral part of facial aesthetics. An attractive smile enhances one’s personality and selfconfidence. The popular saying “the smile is our business card” has never been more relevant, since there is scientific evidence showing the smile is the most important element in the context of facial aesthetics. Studies by Alfred Yarbus revealed that while analyzing facial photographs, people tended to focus attention mostly on the mouth and the eyes.

Growing to meet Peninsula’s needs Mt Eliza Dental Centre has been founded on trust and reliability and has grown through developing strong connections with the community. Having studied dentistry together in Melbourne 16 years ago, Dr Liza Ince and Dr Raymond D’Souza have merged to provide all aspects of general and complex dental care for the entire family. Dr Ince has a special interest in orthodontics for both adults and children. Within the practice, children can be periodically assessed during their routine visits to monitor them orthodontically. This early intervention can prevent extensive treatment later on. Dr D’Souza has experience in cosmetic dentistry such as porcelain veneers, crowns and Ph: 9708 8222

They take a holistic view, enabling you to not just change your smile but to change your life, and offer treatment options for all of your concerns. Their treatment coordinator Robyn will be with you every step of the way because communication is key. She realizes that in the medical profession it is sometimes easy to leave the patient under informed and specifically strives to do the opposite. It’s your mouth, your health and your life. The Dental Care Mt Eliza team is there to make sure you get the most out of treatment and are happy with the results. the time to find out what’s important to you; while hygienists Kate, Natalie Mileto, Natalie Isarin and Ashlee work hard at making your time with them comfortable and leave your teeth extra clean! All dentists have mastered pain free dental techniques and can use nitrous oxide - the ‘happy gas’- to treat patients if required. Girls’ footy is on the rise

Photographs: ‘in photography by michelle pragt’ Three years ago the Mount Eliza Junior Football Club held an open day for girls to come to a girl’s only training session. They came from everywhere! Most of them are still there playing the game they love. Mount Eliza now fields three girl’s only teams; one Under 18 team and two Under 15 teams. The teams train together and on training night under the lights, around 80 girls and women can be seen on the oval developing their football skills in an encouraging environment. Mount Eliza is part of the Frankston District Junior Football League and play against teams like Seaford, Langwarrin, Frankston and Edithvale-Aspendale. In just a few short years, great rivalries have built between the clubs, but also great camaraderie as everyone

looks to grow the sport. 2016 has been a very successful year for girls’ footy at Mount Eliza. Both Under 15 Redlegs teams played off in the FDJFL Grand Final. (Only one point separated the teams at the final siren.) The Mount Eliza girls played a huge role in the League representative teams this year, and several girls have now been selected for development squads with the AFL Youth Girls Academy. With excitement building around the Women’s AFL to begin in February, Mount Eliza Junior Football Club is looking to build their girls’ teams. If you are keen to play in 2017, please register your interest at registrar@mtelizajfc.com.au so that you can be notified of any news on girls’ footy at Mount Eliza. Ph: 9708 8222

Summer delights at La Veneta Restaurant There are some exciting changes happening at La Veneta. Annette Went, the restaurant’s owner, and Mauro Crivelli, its passionate and innovative young head chef from Milan, Italy are busy putting together a summer menu that will feature delicious tapas, salads and pastas designed for the warmer weather. From November La Veneta will be holding Italian happy hours with music each weekend from 4 to 6pm. Don’t forget to book now for your Christmas function – and remember La Veneta is one of the only suppliers of Illy coffee on the Mornington Peninsula. Annette has just returned from one of her fabulous tours of Italy and is organising another for May-June next year. She

has been hosting these tours for several years and delights in showing small groups of people – usually 10-12 – all that Italy has to offer. It’s not just the tourist areas – Annette will show you many of Italy’s hidden gems, including her father’s hometown of Asiago where you will enjoy the hospitality of family and friends. You’re sure to sample some wonderful food and wine and you’re just as likely to find yourself on a truffle hunt with trained dogs or watching a human chess festival in a medieval 13th century setting. Drop into Pops, where the locals go BY ANDREA KELLETT

As the saying goes, follow the locals if you are looking for good food and coffee. That’s certainly the case at Pop & Selma’s Café in Mt Eliza. On a beautiful spring/ summer’s day this is where the locals and, quite often, their pets, linger over good food in the heart of the Mt Eliza Village. There are essentially three seating options – watch the world go by dining alfresco on the sidewalk out the front, head indoors, or spread out in the private rear courtyard, which is perfect for parents with prams and larger groups seeking a bit more space. Pop & Selma’s Café is open from 6.30am Monday to Friday, with tradies’ specials; they serve an all day breakfast menu; and Ph: 9708 8222

it is licensed. On Sundays this is the place to head in Mt Eliza for live music and good times. It’s vegan and vegetarian friendly, has plenty of gluten free options, a fabulous selection of healthy smoothies and fresh chai. One of the local favourites is the ‘Pops Big Breakfast’ – free range eggs of your choice with bacon, seasoned mushrooms, grilled roma tomatoes and wilted spinach, served on ciabatta (there’s a vegetarian version too). There’s eggs Florentine, eggs Benedict, Mexican, Turkish and much more. It’s all here, just ask the locals. POP & SELMA’S CAFÉ A: 34 Ranelagh Drive, Mt Eliza T: 8743 1120

At Woodleigh School, we encourage students to step off the production line, push the boundaries of expression and respond in interesting and different ways to the challenges they face in the world. From the play and enquiry-based programs in our Early Learning Centres at our Minimbah and Penbank Campuses, through to the VCE years at Woodleigh Campus, ours is an environment that supports original, creative thought and focuses on the development of increasingly complex and sophisticated processes of thinking. “All children start their school careers with sparkling imaginations, fertile minds and a willingness to take risks with what they think.” - Sir Ken Robinson – Educationalist Throughout the curriculum at Woodleigh, learning tasks are designed to elicit the highest level of creative thinking from our students. Students are encouraged to tackle problems and investigations in innovative ways, to challenge and test theories and engage in the process of pushing their own boundaries to break through to deeper levels of understanding. No-one can predict the details of what the students of today will need to know in ten or twenty years’ time. What we do know, however, is that as our learning and workplace landscapes change, the human capacity to be creative, to solve problems and think analytically will only grow in importance.
