“If you’re not living in Mount Eliza, sweetie, you’re camping out.” And with that, celebrity impersonator Victoria Ramage, aka Patsy from Always Fabulous (her take on the BBC television sitcom Absolutely Fabulous) sets an entire suburb on notice about how she might weave her performing art magic, now that she’s a local. This queen of entertaining with a killer likeness to Jane Turner, aka Kath from the hit Australian comedy series Kath and Kim, moved from the Gold Coast to the “Mt Eliza area darling” about 12 months ago. The Geelong-born woman has a razor sharp memory for names, a skill for off-the-cuff humour and a love of people. Having settled in with her husband and the two youngest of their four children, Victoria is now starting to appear in character on the Mornington Peninsula social scene. And what a ride we are in for. As we chat in her “fabulous” dining room, Victoria swings in and out of character. “I love fabulously snobbish people because they’re such great material,” she says in her Patsy voice. Patsy appeared at the annual Fields of Fashion charity luncheon at the
Mornington Racecourse in September; at a breast cancer fundraising event at Common Folk, Mornington, in October; and at a handful of other local charity events this year. Always Fabulous is, in her words, “the entertainment package never short of a Bolli, Stoli and Jolli good time sweetie darling”.
Victoria and her long-time partner in impersonating crime Jacqueline Gill, of Brighton, burst onto Melbourne’s entertainment scene in their bogan best as foxy morons Not Kath and Kim (their take on the Australian television
comedy series Kath & Kim) at a recent Brighton Rotary event. “We rocked up in Jacquie’s little Mercedes sports,” Victoria laughs. “We are in character from the time the wigs and makeup go on. If someone’s watching us arrive, we’ll play the part and fall out of the car”. Between Kimmy’s killer voice and Kath’s noice dancing style, this act promises to get a party “going off on the dance floor like a pav in the sun”. Victoria writes all of her own material and tailors it to suit the event and the audience, whether she’s performing stand up, Emcee at corporate events, roving entertainment or icebreakers. And there’s more. Her repertoire also includes former PM Julia ‘Kill-Billard’, Miss Ansett, the outrageous Miss Joan Brook (her take on the late Joan Rivers), Prude & Rude and the Trolley Dollys. The Australian Film & Television Academy and Warehouse graduate is also about to launch two new acts – Housewives of Melbourne’s Janet Roach and Pauline Hanson. “I’m going to have to get a prosthetic nose for that one,” she says of Hanson. Our world needs more than an ATAR In a recent article, Fairfax journalist Anna Patty reported that companies such as KPMG, PwC, and Macquarie University were now asking prospective employees if they have a Duke of Edinburgh Award in order to help assess whether they are well-rounded and team players. The Duke of Ed. program involves elements of community service, physical recreation, learning new skills and taking an adventurous journey. It is a program supported by an increasing number of schools, including Woodleigh, where it is a natural fit with all that we do. In the article, Deputy chairman of the Duke of Edinburgh International Award, Sandra Nori, is quoted as saying

“Resilience, responsibility, respect and co-operation cannot be taught, they can only be learnt experientially.” I could not agree more. Experiential learning, or learning through direct experience, is a term I use a lot to describe the programs offered at Woodleigh School. Our Camps, Activities, Homestead, Broadening Horizons, Round Square, and Immersion Learning Programs offer our students a myriad of opportunities that challenge them to step out of their comfort zones, to be creative, to solve problems and collaborate. Universities too are looking beyond the ATAR as a sole measure of student performance. Interviews, folio presentations and evidence of leadership and active engagement in the community are an increasingly important part of the tertiary selection
process. These human, or ‘soft skills’ not only improve employability, they support success throughout careers which will undoubtedly be longer and more diverse than our own. The concept of providing an education which is expansive and moves beyond the traditional schooling model is not new – at Woodleigh we have been practising this for more than 40 years. But today it seems more critical than ever. X Factor sensation Amalia Foy is living her dream. For as long as she can remember the Toorak College student has wanted to be a singer, and when she turned 14 this year – the minimum age for a contestant on the hit Channel 7 show – she leapt at the chance to audition. And what an audition it was – her version of Passenger’s Let Her Go had the audience on its feet and judge Iggy Azalea in tears. It also prompted a flood of tweets from viewers declaring the show’s youngest contestant a future pop superstar. “I came to the auditions definitely not expecting much, and when I finished my song they just all stood up, and I couldn’t believe it – I was getting so emotional, Iggy was emotional - that was a really memorable moment for me.” Amalia has been playing the piano since she was five – she also plays violin – and started singing lessons four or
five years ago, and even though she is no stranger to the spotlight, X Factor is on a whole new level. Yet she was able to keep her nerves in check. “They weren’t on my mind as such because I couldn’t not do the audition – I just had to give it my all. I think it was the drive to just do my best and not worry about anything. “I love acting, I’ve been in musicals and stuff and I’ve done the school soiree (but) this is my first time applying for something like this, and seriously, I can’t explain what I’m feeling right now – it’s crazy. It’s one of the best experiences of my life.” Amalia is full of admiration for US singer-songwriter Adam Lambert, who mentors her in the under-22s group. “Adam is amazing; he’s so, so good. He’s just so kind and genuine. It’s all positive feedback that we can work on all the time. It’s really uplifting to know what you can work on for the next round or in the future.” Amalia’s father stays with her while
she’s in Sydney for the show and her mother comes up to see her on weekends. “My friends and family … I could not ask for better support; everyone’s been so positive. And the school … I love attending that school. They’ve really prepped me for this experience because of the leadership they work on with public speaking and responsibility in a sense – they have contributed to what I’m doing now and I couldn’t be more thankful.” Citing Jackson Browne, Delta Goodrem and Birdy as influences, Amalia is determined to forge a career in music no matter what happens on X Factor. “If I end up winning this competition, seriously, it would be unimaginable; it would be amazing. (But even if I don’t) everything is set up from this point. Ultimately I’m achieving my dream. This is what I want to do for the rest of my life.” The X Factor screens on Channel 7 on Sundays at 7pm and Mondays at 7.30pm.

TO BEAT The Peninsula School Year 9 student Patrick Rowe is making an impression.
“Patrick Rowe is an outstanding and exciting young cricketer,” remarks Mr Steve Brennan, Director of Sport, when asked about the Year 9’s sporting ability. This comes as Patrick was named in the Australian Under 17 cricket team due to play in New Zealand next year. At only 15 years of age, this is a significant achievement. A 7-week stint in England playing 30 games of senior cricket in 40 days for a local club no doubt contributed to his success.
But his success hasn’t come overnight. “I’ve been playing since I was 6. And it picked me really,” Patrick explains. “But I can’t bowl though, I’m better at batting.” In fact, Patrick isn’t just good at batting, he’s an exceptional batsman. He’s made 12 100s and 40 50s so far and has a batting average of 53. He also won the batting award for the First X1 for the 2015/2016 season an outstanding achievement for a Year 9 student. The juggle of school and playing sport at an elite level is something Patrick is very aware of. “There are sacrifices that you just have to make – when you’re training before and after school every day and often away on trips, it is a bit difficult for friends and your social life,” he explained. Having said that, Patrick loves his cricket. “It’s a great game and I’m hoping it will take me as far as I can go,” he explains. It’s given him some amazing opportunities to travel and to work with some impressive athletes. A number of extremely supportive and enthusiastic coaches have had an impact on Patrick including professional cricketers Greg Shipperd, Darren Berry and Sri Lankan Thilan Samaraweera. He’s definitely a cricketer to keep an eye on.

Chisholm’s Rosebud students and staff are very excited as they embark on a project to establish the Conservation and Land Management Centre at the Boneo Rd site. As the result of a successful Innovation Funding grant, the Conservation teaching team and students will develop an initiative aimed at supporting school groups, community groups and individuals to improve their capacity to conduct bushland restoration and revegetation activities.

The Mornington Peninsula is a biodiversity hotspot, hosting a huge variety of flora and fauna species in more than 45 different ecological vegetation classes. Many of these species are threatened and their long-term survival depends on conservation work conducted not only by industry professionals but by the community. It is Chisholm’s intention to support these efforts to conserve local biodiversity on public and private land. The development of an indigenous plant nursery that offers community groups and individuals the opportunity to propagate their own indigenous plants for their community conservation projects is a key component of this initiative. This will be supported through the development and provision of a series of accredited and non-accredited workshops aimed at providing knowledge and skills around the following areas: An introduction to the indigenous flora and fauna of the Melbourne region, tools and tricks to identifying indigenous flora and fauna, knowledge on ecological vegetation classes, identification of potential fauna habitat, and some tips on the identification of some of the larger plant families and species within the greater Melbourne region; Information and practical sessions on native seed
collection, cleaning and storage, propagation techniques for a wide variety of indigenous species, caring for nursery plants and successful planting of trees and shrubs; and, Development of the skills and knowledge to undertake bushland restoration works. This course includes theory and field-based sessions and covers weed identification and control, principles of bushland restoration, basic GPS skills, supervised chemical use and record-keeping. Cultural Connections is a participant based program operating from the North Frankston Community Centre and targets Aboriginal, Torres Strait Islander, Maori and Pacific Islander youth from 15 to 25 years old who have been disengaged (or who are at risk of disengaging) from school, family, community or culture.
Girls’ school advantage “When girls go to single-sex schools, they stop being the audience and become the players” -
Robin Robertson The middle years of schooling is one of the most integral periods of developmental growth - cognitively, socially and emotionally. Due to this the importance of offering specialised programs during these years is integral to providing a scaffolded learning program from years 5 to 12. Research shows that gender differences in confidence and perceived abilities begin to have an impact on girls from as early as Year 3. It is supported programs, relationships and environment that foster this developmental period and are of benefit, particularly to girls, to enhance not just their academic growth but for their wellbeing as well. “Girls’ schools are focused solely on girls - how they learn, how they play, how they develop friendships and what they need to be successful,” says National Coalition of Girls’ Schools president Trudy Hall. All-girl settings provide girls a certain comfort level that helps them develop greater self-confidence and broader interests, especially as they approach adolescence. From Year 5 onwards, Toorak College offers a girls-only approach to education, providing the perfect environment to give every girl the opportunity for leadership, participation and voice. Toorak College offers endless opportunities for girls in sports, the arts, performance, academia, community engagement and leadership, so that every student can find their passion. Dr Alison Booth, from Australian National University, says: “Girls’ school students are more likely to take healthy risks than girls in co-educational settings.” Girls’ schools create a culture of achievement where girls can take centre stage and strive to fulfil the dreams they aspire to. The program is facilitated by Frankston Council officers Jeremy Nikora (Cultural Connections project officer) and Grant Lea (Aboriginal youth health officer) plus Pacific Island and Aboriginal leaders and elders, a steering committee made up of elders, local agencies and Frankston Council. In operation since September 16 this year, the program offers individual development strategies to youth and supports them with alternative pathways to education and employment where traditional pathways have failed. Some of the clients have had encounters with the justice system and some just need guidance to help figure out who they are. The group has room for 20, but Frankston Council hopes to have a positive impact on the wider local community through their cultural events and education programs, held at the community centre and Narim Marr Djambana respectively. Both Jeremy and Grant have wide experience with mentoring youth, promoting cultural awareness and assisting families. Jeremy has worked on multiple levels, mainly within the Maori and Pacific Island (MPI) communities in a mentoring capacity to youth within the justice system. He sits on a number of community and cultural committees and is regularly
consulted to help with MPI community issues, such as the current APEX youth crime wave. He is also a member of, and tutor in, a couple of Maori performing groups and hopes to encourage and support cultural self resilience within all Polynesian youth who have left their cultural foundations back in New Zealand or the Pacific region. Grant is a Wulli Wulli and Darumbal man of the Kulin Nation in Queensland and has travelled most of the country. After going back to university in his 30s to do a teaching degree, he has taught high school maths, worked with street kids, had a stint in a youth detention facility and worked with The Brotherhood of St Laurence as an Aboriginal case manager for Youth Connections. He now works with the entire Aboriginal community to help provide a better health service. FIONA PARRY-JONES Colour Your Home Fiona Parry-Jones, known as the ‘colour guru’, delves into the dreams of her clients to create beautiful homes with personality. She is the owner of Von-Haus Design Studio, which offers a range of colour and design services that are tailored to each individual client. Having recently moved to the Mornington Peninsula with her husband and little boy, Fiona and her team are motivated with a mission to bring excitement and charm to every project. We sat down to talk about her love of the Peninsula and how it inspires her design. What made you move to the Mornington Peninsula? We wanted a change of pace from the hectic inner city lifestyle and somewhere close to a beach that would be a good place for our little boy to grow up. The new roads make it so easy to still commute to clients, both city bound and

Do you think the Mornington Peninsula has its own particular style? Yes, it does have its own style. I feel the Peninsula has a more relaxed, beach vibe with the variety of styles in architecture and design to enhance this. There is a lovely sense of community all over the Peninsula, which makes each suburb have its own special style unique to the area,
What type of design do you love at the moment? I love any type of design that embraces colour in unique ways. It’s hard for me to pick one trend or design style because I am always looking at new ways to bring different styles together. What I do love is how colour is coming back into kitchens. Kitchens and bathrooms should have personality and why not make them colorful too! Where are your favourite places to shop for design pieces on the Mornington Peninsula? Tyabb Packing House has always been a top favourite of mine since I first discovered it back in 2003 when I came over from the UK. I love Mynd interiors in Frankston and all the markets too. My newfound discoveries are The Colour English in Mount Eliza and Greedi Lulu in Mornington. It’s very dangerous living so close to such beautiful shops but I’m very passionate about investing in local artisans and retailers. Where do you draw inspiration from on the Mornington Peninsula? I draw a lot of inspiration from the

Where did your love of colour come from? It started at university when I was studying fine art, I investigated the significance of colour on the human body and how we interacted with it through visual art. This led me to learn more about the effects of colour in our daily lives and particularly in our homes. From there my obsession grew to interior design and the ways I could use colour to make homes beautiful as well as reflecting the personality of people who live there. What is the most interesting project you have worked on? I recently completed a very colourful project in Northcote where the client wanted every room to have a different colour theme. They had an amazing collection of artwork that helped to explore this more and there was a special kids zone where their artwork became the wallpaper for the room. It was such a fun project and was wonderful to see how the family all had input on the overall use of the space and style. What can people expect from your ‘Colour Your Home’ workshops? There are lots of people out there buying houses and renovating, but don’t know what style they like or how to pull their ideas together. This workshop is a great starting point for any interior decorating project and helps you map out the direction you want to go in. You leave with a moodboard ready for your next step, along with a pack filled with information on local suppliers in the area to help with your purchasing decisions. Company gets the Ball rolling Leading horticulture company Ball Australia is moving to Skye as part of a $15 million expansion of its production nursery and distribution business.

The company has secured a $350,000 State Government grant to support the move, which is expected to be completed by mid-2017 and will include the construction of a production centre and office complex on a 20ha site on the corner of Hall Rd and Westernport Highway. The privately-owned Keysborough site it has occupied since 1998 will be sold. The move is expected to create up to 19 new jobs with the company over the next five years, potentially including 12 retrenched automotive workers in the first 18 months, and as many as 100 construction jobs. Ball Australia’s managing director, Paul Boland, said: “The move comes at a time of rapid growth for the amenity horticulture sector, and we want to be there to support this growth. What Ball Australia will bring to Melbourne’s southeast as well as the overall Australian horticulture industry is opportunity, jobs, improved marketing and promotion of plant products plus a continuance of bringing gardening into consumers’ lifestyles.” The new site will feature advanced equipment including germination chambers, growing and mother stock facilities and hi-tech environmental controls.

The streets in Frankston South near the corner of Humphries Rd and the Nepean Highway curve and cross each other at unusual angles because of the steep creek valleys that encircle this area. This can make finding your way around confusing, so it’s no surprise that there are streets that are not well known. Yamala Park Bowling Club is in such a street and is a hidden gem in this suburban island. It has nestled in Dunstan St for more than 50 years, yet even some locals have been unaware of its existence until recently. The green is set into the hill facing Port Philip Bay within a small park with some lovely old trees on its boundaries; Yamala Park Tennis Club is in the same park.

70 years and still going strong Seventy years is a long time in business. Watsons Pty Ltd marks its 70th anniversary in business on the Mornington Peninsula this year and, as one of the largest employers of professional staff on the Peninsula, it’s a significant milestone. Watsons has been a leader in the land development industry since September 1946, when it was founded by the late Jack Watson (a former Shire engineer and surveyor). Current director John Woodman took over the business in the early 1990s. From humble beginnings as a small local business, Watsons grew quickly to become the pre-eminent consultant to land developers across the Mornington Peninsula and Victoria. “He was a pioneer,” Mr Woodman said of Jack Watson, during an interview about the organisation’s 70-year anniversary. “He subdivided most of the land on the Mornington Peninsula (on behalf of clients).” Watsons’ clientele, past and present,
include Stockland, Evolve, Villawood, Satterley, Australand, Peet & Co and AVJennings, as well as household names such as Lindsay Fox and the Myer, Ansett, Baillieu-Myer, Hains and Coles families. The company currently employs about 60 professionals and has been involved in some of the Peninsula’s biggest developments including Moonah Links and The National (integrated golf course and low density living developments) and Martha Cove. Mr Woodman contested this year’s local government elections – a big move for a man at the helm of such a large organisation. The decision was, he explains, driven by frustration. “I feel that over a period of time councils have continued to increase rates and, to some extent, to pay themselves more money. At some stage or other someone’s got to put a stop to it.” In this issue of Mornington Peninsula Magazine, Mr Woodman has publicly thanked everyone who voted for him. The election results were declared as Mornington Peninsula Magazine went to print.

You might feel this is a situation you won’t encounter surfing on the Mornington Peninsula, given that most shark attacks (even two recently this year in May and June) occur on the west coast of Australia. Peninsula locals will never miss a deal again with the recent launch of ifloc, a mobile app that notifies users of deals in real time. Founded by Mornington locals, Anthony Cincotta and Nick Waite, ifloc is a free app that produces pop up notifications on your device when you’re within a 1 kilometre radius of the business. The app launched exclusively at Mornington Main Street Festival last month, with local businesses such as Mercetta, Merchant Lane, About Thyme Cafe, HBT Skin & Beauty and Bay Hotel posting special offers for festival goers to redeem on the day. The app is continually expanding in its offering and geographical reach, with an increasing number of businesses signing up each day. How does it work? Shoppers can download the free app available on the App Store and Google Play Store. Unlike other deal based apps you then receive ifloc alerts when you are close to a live deal, so you can access deals on-the-go, whether it’s a sale on shoes or a free coffee with lunch at your favourite local cafe. You then redeem the deal by presenting it on your phone at the business. Anthony Cincotta explains, “The idea is that somebody might be walking through their local shopping strip, and deals will pop up on their screen as they walk. They can get real dollar savings as they go about their day, without having to print off coupons or vouchers like other deal offerings”. Businesses are equally benefited by the app, which increases exposure by targeting the right customers in the right location at the right time. Rosebud is set to become the destination for families this summer with the development of the Destination Rosebud Playground where kids of all abilities are welcome. Located opposite the pier and inspired by the Mornington Peninsula’s unique geography and landscape, this innovative and fun foreshore play space will cater for a range of ages and abilities (although not officially an all abilities space) and aims to inspire and excite through a number of accessible play options. There’ll be paths throughout the ground level, ramps to shelters, a single accessible BBQ, basket swing and tactile garden, plus a natural pallet of materials to explore. Mornington Peninsula Shire Council has engaged Glascott Landscape & Civil to deliver the new Rosebud foreshore playground in time for Christmas. Designed by HASSELL, the playground is being constructed to cater to the growing community and their new ‘Destination Rosebud’ campaign aims at encouraging a high level of usage over the summer months. The junior play space at Rosebud will focus on sensory and imaginative play while senior areas will provide a range of age specific challenges. There will be large and small mounds for climbing, bank slides, swings, a flying fox, balance beams and a rope haul. An outdoor classroom, various shelters and garden beds will encourage social activities and adventure. A charity striving to build “a happier, healthier, more inclusive nation” is inviting applications for seed funding to establish community choirs. Creativity Australia, which was founded in 2008 by social entrepreneur and soprano Tania de Jong, established the With One Voice program to set up community choirs and singing projects for all people
regardless of age, race, religion, disability or disadvantage. Their purpose is to make people happier, healthier, smarter and more creative by tackling isolation and loneliness, social disconnection and mental health issues. According to Creativity Australia’s website: “When diverse people sing together on a regular basis, we create supportive communities better-placed to solve some of society’s biggest
challenges, such as mental illness, cultural tension and unemployment.” Grants of up to $12,500 are available to cover initial costs while the program establishes itself in the community. Communities will also receive support and mentoring from Creativity Australia to ensure the program becomes sustainable. The deadline for applications is November 23. If you noticed a scarecrow or two around the Mornington Peninsula hills recently, chances are they were courtesy of the Hinterland Scarecrow Festival and Trail. Between September 16 and October 3 scarecrows popped up in gardens, shop fronts, vineyards and even mazes for the annual event. With Rosebud’s long history as a great place to enjoy summer beach holidays, what better place to revive the fun-filled ‘50s and ‘60s lifestyle? This new festival, Foreshore RockFest, will run over three days - November 25-27 - and will involve a series of different music, dance, movie, car and vintage shopping events. Fun starts on Friday evening with a Beach Party in the Rosebud Scout Hall, plus the Mark Andrews Legends Show at GPO Hotel from 7pm. Mark
is a renowned Elvis impersonator and his show will focus on Elvis, Austen Powers, Tom Jones and others. On Saturday morning the town centre will rock with hot rod and ‘chrome bumper’ cars on show, ‘50s performers and dancers along the footpath. From noon outside Vinnies shop, Rosebud resident and professional impersonator Wayne Crawford will delight shoppers with his faithful recreation of the King’s velvet voice. There is also a ‘50s and ‘60s market running at Rosebud Primary School on both Saturday and Sunday. The market will include clothing, food, DJs, live bands and dance demonstrations, with a gold coin entry. The vintage shops in town will pump with music, fashion and bargains while the cinema will feature a classic Audrey Hepburn movie. Saturday evening will provide fans of
the ‘50s and ‘60s with multiple dance venues hosting live bands, including the Lincolns, Fender Benders and Honey B and the Stingers, along with a special Elvis double feature at the Dromana 3 Drive In. Sunday will see a pre-1970s hot rod and classic car show on the Village Green, featuring hundreds of cars and vintage caravans, with live music. For the fashionistas from the era, a vintage clothing and ‘pin up’ contest will also be held in the Memorial Hall next to the car show. All events will culminate at 3pm. Paintings by two of the five sisters whose large collaborative painting of their country won the Wynne Prize for Landscape Art at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in July this year feature in the Spring Salon + Art Parade exhibition at Whistlewood Gallery, Shoreham, this month. The Wynne Prize is Australia’s longest running art prize and is awarded each year in conjunction with the Archibald Prize. This year’s winners were the Ken sisters from the Aboriginal-owned art centre Tjala Arts in Amata in the Pitjantjatjara (APY) lands of northern South Australia. They are the third indigenous artists to win the much-coveted award and the first from their APY Lands to do so.

Trio to cast a spell at MOTH Young singer songwriters Ella Hooper, Melody Pool and Gena Rose Bruce will take to the stage at Music on the Hill (MOTH) in December. Expect Patti Smith and Karen Dalton to Lykke Li and Lana Del Ray and when these three collaborate, a “a magical
circle” is cast over them as they explore the feminine mystique through music, according to MOTH. For those of you who thought the industrial precinct in Mornington was just a bunch of warehouses full of space, stock and machinery, think again. This zone is a hidden maker’s melange of hand crafted creations and expressive art and November marks the emergence of The Mornington Arts Precinct (M.A.P) event, where you get to take a peek inside.
Apparently there are creators tucked away here, there and everywhere and now’s the time to share! So who’s involved? “Artspace 8, Baluk Arts, Blackspot, Co.Co Place, Commonfolk Coffee, Lost Boy Customs, MP Brewery, Oak Hill Gallery, Oasis Pop Up Bakery, and Peninsula Recycled Timber, Southern Buoy, The Nook and The Snake Hole. Everyone is volunteering their time to make this into something we hope will develop into an annual experience – even into a festival at some stage!” Lindy says.
Creative venues are plentiful on the Peninsula and 13 of them will open their doors to the public on November 11 through 13. Coordinator of this fresh-minded event, Lindy Bayley, explains: “I don’t know what I’ve got myself into! This is shaping up to be huge. M.A.P aims to showcase local creatives (think open studios, creative talks, exhibitions and live mural painting over the weekend) within the industrial area of Mornington. Each one of the studios and businesses that have agreed to collaborate will be featuring their own creative hub in their own unique way.”
There will also be an Inaugural Life Drawing Artist of the Year competition run in conjunction with Oak Hill Gallery and major sponsors BMW and Arete Aesthetics. Artists can paint, draw, sculpt or do prints based on the nude. Enter by November 12 to be part of the pop up exhibition, sales and judging by sponsors, which will take place on November 13. Magic realism meets urban expansionism at Manyung Mount Eliza BY LIZ ROGERS
Spanish/Australian fine art photographer and multi-media artist Alberto Sanchez sets the scene with his view finder and then rearranges what he sees through physical perversion. Sound interesting? That’s because it is. This multi award winning and world-wide exhibited artist (think the States, Singapore, Milano, Hong Kong, Germany, Sweden and the list goes on) conceives photography as a creative art form that is not constricted to the digital medium. His work transcends mere representation. A Sanchez work of art breathes new and reimagined life into a scene through unique hand-colouring technique, scratching and mastery manipulation. Multi layering is what you’ll see. An injection of surreal reality is what you’ll feel when viewing his sensory work which is akin to a Gabriel Garcia Marquez novel or short story. He explains: “My work is about the

Mount Eliza secures third major event for a charitable cause Geoff Nyssen has learned to turn his own adversity into an empowerment story and wants to bring others along for the ride. Geoff Nyssen has spent the past two years learning to live a new ‘normal’. Multiple Myeloma is a terminal blood cancer with the average age of diagnosis being 70 years of age. For Geoff, this diagnosis was three weeks after his 40 birthday, on February 18, 2014. It’s the pressured times in our life that bring out our true character. When you meet Geoff you’ll soon realise that he is not a man walking around shackled by his circumstance. Instead, he stands tall (literally at 6.6ft, 198cm) in the crowd, seemingly humbled by his own journey and motivated to see everyone who he meets live life to the full. “On the day that I was diagnosed, I was told that, statistically, I have 8-10 years to live. I don’t subscribe to those statistics. Statistics look backwards and I look forwards. I look forward to my 80th birthday. It will be one big party,” he said. Geoff’s story is so inspirational he has been called on to speak around the country about his empowerment journey. Taking his commitment to purposeful living a step further, he has a big vision for the Mount Eliza and Mornington Peninsula community which, he says, has provided amazing support to him and his family during his most challenging of times. “When I consider my community, I recognise that my community is extensive. I grew up on the
Mornington Peninsula. This is my community. I have Multiple Myeloma. Those with Multiple Myeloma, and those who support us, are my community. My kids go to Kunyung Primary School and I wanted to give back to my community. Something bold, something engaging and something that would bring a smile to the faces of families within my community, especially the kids.” On March 26, 2017, Geoff and his team will deliver the inaugural My Mount Eliza Run and Fun Festival. Of his team, Geoff offered, “As a rallied group of locals, we believe that our ability to empower others starts with our personal wellness. So, we decided to volunteer our own talent and time to create a sustainable annual festival that benefits the community for the longer term.” With an anticipated crowd of up to 1000 locals, the My Mount Eliza Run and Fun Festival will look to engage the community in a festival experience comprising a unique trail run around the Mount Eliza quarry, a premium skate park competition and many other family orientated activities and exhibitions. Did you know movie posters are the most collectable item in the world? And here’s a tip - if you happen to have an original Casablanca poster stashed away, you’re sitting on a goldmine, according to Greg Chilvers from Silver Screen at Tyabb Packing House Antiques. “Casablanca, you can’t get it,” this walking encyclopaedia of vintage film and television collectibles/memorabilia explains. “I sold one about six years ago and I haven’t got another one since. Today it would be worth $4000 upwards.” He also has an original ‘That’s Cricket’ Don Bradman 1931 movie poster that is so rare it commands a five-figure price tag, and it’s stored off site. Silver Screen is located at Tyabb Packing House Antiques. Greg and his team specialise in original (old and modern) movie posters and movie memorabilia, lobby cards, comics, hard to find DVDs, Disney, Beatrix Potter, limited edition figurines, statues and more. The place is a mind blowing treasure trove, and it’s right under our noses.

Tinalley enchants and surprises The internationally acclaimed Tinalley String Quartet enchanted a local audience on October 1 at the all inclusive Peninsula Community Theatre, hosted by the Peninsula Music Society. Warmth and passion marked the evening’s music; the beauty and virtuosity of Lerida Delbridge (violin) and Michelle Wood (cello) complementing the exquisitely integrated and skilled musical presence of Adam Chalabl (violin) and Justin Williams (viola). The allure began with Webern’s romantic Langsamer Satz - a piece exhibiting the powerful charge of Mahler and Wagner while heralding a change in the nature of composition. Then came the sensitively rendered String Quartet No. 2 in A minor, Op. 13, its journey developing a theme which the young Mendelssohn, fallen in love, had previously published, in an Op.9 set to which he wrote both words and music. Beethoven followed, with the engrossing drama of String Quartet Op. 59, No. 3 ‘Razumovsky’. As Tinalley’s enlightening program notes have it, this carries the listener from initial distortion to more energised colours touched with some restraint, and a second movement thematically “reminiscent of an ancient Russian folksong”. The final lyrical minuet then “surprises”; this night, it did so gloriously, with the players launching into a rapturously acclaimed finale. BY CATHERINE GODONY

Exhibition a chance to draw breath Before the Christmas rush you have 21 days to stop for a breath of nature as the Brialyn Boathouse Gallery holds its final exhibition for 2016. From the waterways of Fraser Island down the east coast of Australia you can enjoy the moments that Lyn Mellady (pictured at work on Incoming Weather) has decided to relive in her impressionistic realist paintings. This is her time to celebrate her work and take a breath. She will be very active next year. Her studio is moving and she has exciting painting and art travel planned, and this exhibition will show some of her favourite paintings to date. Robert Knight, who is known for his canvasses depicting his impressions of his beloved tall forests, has also been active across Australia this
year, painting in Perth and NSW as well as visiting the magnificent eucalypts near his home studio. He has a strong following of admirers and you too can see why in this gathering of works. Of course there is also more to see. There is another room showing some of the gallery’s favourite artists and its hand-crafted pottery, jewellery and glassware.

Bel Canto Choir spreads Christmas cheer The Bel Canto Choir would love to see you at their third and final concert for 2016. The choir, with their conductor Margaret Brown, will present a celebration of beautiful Christmas choral music interweaved with poems and prose. You will also be invited to share in the singing of traditional Christmas carols enhanced with harmonies and descants sung by the choir. All proceeds from this concert will be donated to Fusion Mornington Peninsula’s Community Placement Refuge, which supports homeless and troubled young people, helping them to become successful administrators of their own lives. Best of both worlds Living in Two Worlds is not only the title of Marion Parker’s latest solo exhibition, it also sums up the Mount Martha artist. “I was always told to ‘come back down to earth’, or ‘stop daydreaming’, as I’ve always had my mind or spirit in the nonphysical world,” she says. “And so the title of this show is all about my two distinctive styles - of the physical world of earthly landscapes where I’m inspired by nature, and the ethereal nonphysical world where I paint my abstracts and am inspired by quantum physics and the metaphysical.” Marion was a naturopath who treated such celebrities as George Foreman. She had clinics in Sydney and Melbourne, wrote a few books, had health columns, a radio show and even a racehorse then she had an epiphany and gave it all away to move to Mount Martha and paint. After 10 years, with her art now selling internationally and her name becoming known in art circles, Marion feels she’s only getting warmed up and that the best is yet to come. Breast Care first for Peninsula Health Peninsula Health has welcomed Victoria’s first McGrath Foundation metastatic breast care nurse.
Jenny Macindoe has specialised in helping women and men with breast cancer for the last 20 years. She will now help metastatic breast cancer patients and their families across the Mornington Peninsula and she said she was honoured. “I’ve been a breast care nurse for so long that I was very aware that metastatic breast cancer patients had specific needs – so I really wanted to work towards trying to specialise in metastatic disease so I could hopefully access and help these patients,” she said. Metastatic breast cancer refers to the stage of cancer that is incurable – when it has spread beyond the primary tumour site of the breast to other parts of the body. The needs of patients with metastatic breast cancer are specific and demand for the support provided by metastatic
breast care nurses is growing, according to McGrath Foundation CEO Petra Buchanan. Jenny has significant experience in specialist breast care nursing and will support metastatic breast cancer patients and their families every step of the way. “I’m a really good listener and will be there to offer advice and guidance about dealing

In South Eastern Melbourne approximately 960 people will be diagnosed with primary breast cancer in 2016 and 140 will be diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer, according to the McGrath Foundation. Peninsula Health and Jenny both acknowledged the work of the McGrath Foundation in bringing this level of support to patients on the Mornington Peninsula. “The McGrath Foundation has done an excellent job at placing breast care nurses in areas of high need so women in Australia can hopefully have access to breast care nurses when they’re diagnosed,” Jenny said. “My mandate will be to try and have at least one contact with every patient who is diagnosed with metastatic breast cancer at Peninsula Health so they know I exist and they know how to contact me.” Patients and their families can access this free service by contacting Access on 1300 665 781.

Trained in London at The British School of Osteopathy, Simon Clement left England for a one-year osteopathic placement in Melbourne in the early 1980s. Thirty years later, he’s still at work on the Mornington Peninsula. “Turns out there couldn’t really be a better place for my practice or for bringing up a family,” Simon said. “It’s wonderful feeling part of the local community and it’s also good for both the practice and the Peninsula to see so many young families moving down this way.” After many years in Mornington, Simon recently downsized to a oneman practice in Mount Martha. How to beat the odds against skin cancer BY DR SALLY SHAW
Here’s the news: spring racing has arrived and so has UV radiation. While you’re browsing this season’s designer collections, spare a thought for your precious skin because spring and early summer is a common time to get caught out with accidental sunburn. In Victoria, November weather is often cool and cloudy but the UV index can still be at an extreme level of 7‐8. Under these unpredictable conditions, our skin can start to show signs of sunburn in less than 20 minutes. A good strategy to avoid accidental skin damage is to plan ahead. Choose an outfit that will protect your skin. This is the most straightforward way to avoid UV radiation. If you can’t resist this season’s off‐the shoulder dresses, then make sure you apply broad spectrum sunscreen. This should be done 20 minutes before you go out and you will need to re‐apply at the regular intervals. Most sunscreens need to go on to clean skin, so apply the sunscreen onto your face before your makeup for maximum protection. It’s not a happy statistic. UV radiation is the major cause of skin cancer, including the most dangerous type: melanoma. There are around seven Victorians dying of melanoma every week and it is the most common form of cancer in young people aged between 13 and 39 years. So if you feel you need a tan to complete your look, I recommend you fake it, don’t bake it. No tanning is safe, it only damages your skin cells and causes premature ageing. And here’s another great tip: if you’re planning on enjoying a glass of bubbles while at the track, don’t forget to keep hydrated and match every glass of alcohol with a glass of water. It will not only help your liver, it will also help your skin. Be a winner in the skin cancer stakes this spring and remember to: cover up, apply sunscreen, choose a hat with a wide brim, wear stylish sunglasses and pick a spot in the shade to celebrate your winnings. Hence, six of his favourite words: Love. Life. Tradition. Generosity. Extravagance. Food. Such is the beauty of what Guy presents on a plate that spare tables, and even a few spare seats, are hard to find in his cafe; his cooking classes are sell outs; and his cookbooks ‘Eat Ate’ and ‘Hungry’ (you can find both in store, on display) are on coffee tables and in kitchens across the country. At age 63, Guy has creative energy to burn. In fact, he still dreams of opening a second café and has been working on another cookbook, called ‘Tom’. “I’ve been saying for 15 years that I’m going to open another place but I’m too fussy about what I want,” he says. “My philosophy has always been to try everything, do everything. We used to have a tote bag that we used to sell that said ‘Do Everything’ and that’s kind of the Shop Ate motto really, because life’s too short.” ‘Tom’ is waiting to be published, perhaps self published this time around. Tom, Guy explains, was his name for the first 11 years of his life, before his parents changed it to Guy. “It’s beautiful, it’s a beautiful book,” Guy says of ‘Tom’. “Tom is at home right now, he’s on my computer.” While ‘Tom’ waits for the right timing, Guy is busy as usual at Shop Ate Café and Store, and with teaching. He’s running a bunch of cooking classes across Melbourne between now and Christmas, but you’ll have to wait until next year for one of his popular men’s cooking classes at Shop Ate.

Fifteen years. That’s how long Guy Mirabella has been working his magic in the intimate kitchen space that is the heart and soul of Shop Ate Café and Store in Mt Eliza. And this talented cook, family man, cookbook author/ designer and business owner has his heart set on rounding that out to at least 30. “In 15 years I’ll still be here,” he says during a wide ranging interview with Mornington Peninsula Magazine about life, good food and, of course, himself. “My father used to say that you go with your heart and your brain will follow.” Whether influenced by his father, wired that way, or perhaps a dash of both, Guy Mirabella has always led with his heart, especially when it comes to food. He still, however, manages to find time for his other creative love, painting. In September, artworks by Guy featured in the front window of Pomme, in Main Street Mornington, to coincide with the store’s relocation from 59 to 27 Main Street, a little closer to the sea. “They represented a flight of birds, moving,” Guy explains. Life in and out of the kitchen is pretty sweet right now, it seems. Bring on the next 15, Guy. Ooopa! Alatonero (saltwater in Greek) is the newest offering from hospitality duo Zac and Jacqui Poulier, from the renowned Stillwater at Crittenden and Freshwater Catering. Cameron Taylor, owner, The Boathouse BY ANDREA KELLETT Cameron Taylor took over The Boathouse on the banks of Kananook Creek in Frankston five years ago. In that time, he has stamped his mark on the iconic restaurant, intent on making it a “special place” in its unique location. It seats up to 80 guests and up to 140 for cocktail service. Cameron is a qualified chef with an eye for detail, a passion for fresh, seasonal ingredients and a focus on constantly evolving. Christmas Day we are having a nice fivecourse, simple menu that’s easy pleasy! (think sweetcorn & leek veloute with char-grilled Queensland banana prawns, smoked tomato salsa and chive oil for entrée; roast porchetta stuffed with currants and pinenuts, potato galette,
buttered greens, orange and rosemary jus for main; spiced plum pudding with brandy anglaise, fresh cherries and almond nougat for dessert, plus starters). What is the key to your success? Evolving. We are constantly evolving the menu, the dishes and the wine. We are always looking for new ingredients, what’s new, the next smart thing and it’s got to be fresh and exciting. We actually offer a martini as a dessert. So you like to shake things up? I’m not afraid of trying different things. What do you love about Frankston? I think it offers a lot to everyone and there’s more than just the beach – there’s diversity, open space and an untapped beauty here with Kananook Creek. I am an advocate for Frankston. Have any big name celebrities dined at the Boathouse Restaurant? Yes (but he won’t reveal who!) What do you do when you’re not at the Boathouse? I’m a Flying 15s state champion. With these longer sunny days we will begin to see substantial growth in our edible gardens over the next few months, and keeping up with it all can be overwhelming for some. However, if you plan well for the season and understand how the cycles work in your own garden you can prepare and stay on top of the maintenance of your food crops. The important things to keep in mind over this warm period are maintaining soil moisture, watching out for pests and diseases and consistently harvesting your crops. If your soil has been prepared adequately prior to summer planting with plenty of nutrient and organic matter, a lack of soil moisture is really the main issue that may impede strong growth and healthy crops during these warmer months. A well functioning drip irrigation system covered with a thick layer of mulch is going to make maintaining moisture in your soil easy, no matter what water restrictions are thrown our way.
As a food gardener many of us will be trapping good quantities of water from our roofs anyway. As far as mulches go, a 75-100mm thick layer of straw or lucerne mulch will be fine. Any less will break down too quickly and lose its effectiveness. As well as attending to your soils, make sure you keep a regular eye on pests and diseases over the season. I recommend casting an observant eye over your crops at least 2 to 3 times a week to see if there are any little crawlers or fungal issues. The common vegetable bug will be out and about, along with the cabbage butterfly, earwigs, slaters and their friends. A few bugs in the garden are fine and a little damage is nothing to worry about, so long as you catch them before any serious infestation takes hold you will be right. If you think you may have a disease issue, pluck a leaf or fruit and have it handy as you use your reference book … or Google it. If there is a safe, non-toxic approach to remedying your situation, always take that option first. Failure to keep up with harvesting your fruit and veggies can lead to all sorts of problems, so be sure to keep track of which plants are producing, and when (this will
help in subsequent seasons). Regular harvesting will encourage your plants to continue to produce, in most cases, and prevent rotting veggies attracting flies and bugs. You may also end up with dry, split or oversized vegetables if you leave them too long. Nibble as you wander to check how they are going. The best way to stay on top of these things is to ramble through the garden two or three times a week sticking your fingers into the soil, checking for bites and bugs, and filling your harvest basket with goodies. It’s all part of enjoying an edible garden. If you haven’t already, it’s the perfect time to plant your tomatoes, capsicum, eggplants, cucumbers and pumpkin. Try watermelon and rockmelon, both easy for beginners and “golden” on those hot summer days. Successive plantings of leafy greens can continually go in to maintain constant harvests, and companion herbs will serve their dual purpose of helping other crops and providing tasty additions to meals and drinks.
