When work is completed on the Blairgowrie Yacht Squadron clubrooms and marina by summer this year, things will have come a long way from the tin shed, slip way and tiny jetty that was the BYS in 1952. ITN Architects, who are behind the Deck in Frankston and the modern luxury of the Brighton Savoy, were engaged to create a functional and stylish space for members that maximised the water views and complemented the coastal surrounds. The club rooms will consist of a racing lounge, seniors lounge and function rooms, while a spacious outdoor deck with bar access will wrap the front of the building. The new marina will have doubled in capacity and have the facility to get boats in and out of the water for servicing, something members previously had to go to Queenscliff or Sandringham for. Maben constructions are on track to have the clubrooms completed in October for the start of the sailing season, and the marina complete in December in time for the return of the Petersville Regatta, December 27-30. This family-friendly event was a mainstay of the sailing calendar during the 80s and the BYS are very excited to be bringing it back this year.

Celebrate indigenous art for NAIDOC Week Indigenous contemporary art takes over Frankston Arts Centre throughout June and July. Running now until June 27 is In the Saddle - On the Wall, a collaboration between five aboriginal owned galleries in the Kimberly and ABC Open (real stories from around Australia). Digital stories are alongside the stunning artworks providing a powerful and personal account of life on the cattle farms for the artists and their elders. Former Toorak College student, Lorraine Kabbindi White from Western Arnhem Land has her second solo exhibition Kolkiwarra opening on July 2. Lorraine’s work is in the Mimih style of her forebears and inspired by her grandfather a leader among his people whose works are featured at the National Gallery of Victoria. NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day Observance Committee) week is observed from July 5-12 this year and Baluk Arts in Mornington has curated a number of events to commemorate the occasion. Frankston Indigenous artist Kunda Eamo will have ceramic works on display alongside selected works on paper by Baluk

Gallery artists. Bayside Bush Sculptures will be in the glass cube by day, with a projection show by night. Bayside Bush Sculptures is a selection of animals inspired by the bayside and peninsula made from grasses, wool and string in a workshop facilitated by Gunditjmara artist Bronwyn Razem. NAIDOC week opens with a flag raising ceremony at the Frankston Civic Centre on Monday July 6 at 10:30am followed by a morning tea and gallery viewing across the road at Frankston Arts Centre. Laying the foundations Toorak College’s Junior School, Wardle House, is so much more than a kindergarten and primary school. The girls and boys find their place in a small nurturing environment, allowing quality teachers to know and respect each child as an individual learner.

Overwhelming research supports that the Early Years are a significant stage in a child’s development. “A child’s early learning, influences their life choices,” Early Years Learning Framework, Australia.

MEET OUR NEW SHIRE CHIEF LOOKING TO DELIVER BETTER COUNCIL SERVICES FOR THE COMMUNITY Mornington Peninsula Shire’s new chief executive Carl Cowie is an internationally experienced director, who has used his strong finance background to lead significant business turnarounds. In his current role, Carl is conducting an in-depth organisational review of the shire in order to stamp out inefficiencies and deliver better council services for the community. Carl has been in office for six months now, but says the time has gone fast. He has spent the past half year getting to know the councillors and shire staff and meeting with a range of community groups to learn what changes can be made to ‘deliver maximum value for less cost’. He says his aims are to positively promote the shire, improve productivity and build a more successful, sustainable and transparent organisation. And with 1000 odd staff members, this is quite a challenge. (He admits he has to

be ‘a bit bulletproof’ in his role, as people can often be resistant to change.) Scottish-born Carl, who was appointed chief executive on December 1, comes equipped with a lengthy career in finance. He studied accounting and economics at university and later completed an MBA at Monash University. Carl has worked for international oil and construction companies, hospitals, solar companies and Australian cleaning and catering group Spotless. After a stint as Caulfied Hospital’s general manager from 2000, Carl was headhunted and set off to Qatar to work as chief operating officer at Al Ahli Hospital in Doha. He describes this as a ‘massive project’, but says it was a fantastic experience living and working in the Middle East. From 2007 to 2011, Carl worked for the National Patient Transport Group, first as chief financial officer and then chief executive.

He says under his direction the company’s profits tripled, and that he enjoys tackling roles with ‘turnaround challenges’. Carl, who lives in Wheelers Hill, near Mulgrave, with wife Terri and their three boys, says when he heard about the Mornington Peninsula Shire role, he felt it would be a refreshing challenge for him. He is currently gaining knowledge about how the shire functions, performs and responds to customer needs, however is quick to assert that the organisation is not in financial strife. “We get the majority of our income from rates and we want to get that managed so that the community is getting the best value from the shire.” He says sound financial control is vital for any business and describes the shire as a large business with a high level of responsibility to the community. “I will continue to work hard with our staff every day to support council to deliver as many services as cost effectively as possible.”

RILEY’S

BIG BREAK

Local lad Riley Spadaro is following in the footsteps of some of Australia’s most famous actors, including Hugh Jackman, Heath Ledger and Lisa McCune.

Riley, who graduated from Elisabeth Murdoch College in Frankston last year, is now studying at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts, which has schooled some of Australia’s most successful acting talents. He is studying a Bachelor of Performing Arts, majoring in performance making. Last year, Riley flew to Brisbane to audition for a spot in the

JUNE-JULY 2015 (44)

exclusive course, which he says he was attracted to because it was the only one in Australia to offer an integrated approach to writing, acting and directing. “I was quite shocked when I got into it,” he says. “It is quite a prestigious school. “The first thing I did was ring my drama teacher (Angela Phillips).

“She’s been my inspiration to keep going. “I called her before I called my mum even, and we both cried on the phone.” The course, headed by Dr Frances Barbe who has trained in butoh (a form of Japanese dance) and the Suzuki method of acting for over 20 years, comprises both academic and performance-based classes. “It opens you up to different ways of thinking about performance,” Riley says. Riley has performed in numerous stage shows and been heavily involved with musical theatre since he joined a local drama group at age ten. In March this year, he returned to Melbourne to perform a monologue from Peter Shaffer’s ‘Lettice and Lovage’. It was his VCE Theatre Studies solo piece, for which he received perfect marks and, as a result, received the Premier’s Award for the subject. The performance was part of the VCE Season of Excellence, which showcased the state’s best performing arts students. In 2011, Riley was the recipient of the Music Theatre Guild of Victoria’s Bruce Award for Junior Male in a Supporting Role, for his performance as Mrs Meers in Elisabeth Murdoch College’s ‘Thoroughly Modern Millie’. He has also previously received a judge’s award and commendation from the MTGV, as well as a Lyrebird Youth Award nomination. In June 2014, Riley directed Elisabeth Murdoch College’s production of Arthur Miller’s ‘The Crucible’ at the Briars. He hopes to one day perform at the Steppenwolf Theatre in Chicago or London’s National Theatre. “To get my masters in directing at the Yale School of Drama is the dream.” BY KRISTY MARTIN www.mpmag.com.au

Mornington Peninsula man Sean Willmore’s life is full of contrasts. One day he will be speaking with Prince William and Prince Charles at Kensington Palace and the next, he’s on the frontline in Africa, helping park rangers protect endangered species from poaching. He has brought world leaders to tears at a UN summit, receives support from Hillary Clinton and Dame Jane Goodall and yet he lives in an old Melbourne tram with no mod cons and an outdoor bathtub. Sean is the founder of the Thin Green Line Foundation, the world’s only charity that helps protect wildlife by supporting park rangers. It doesn’t matter who you are, it is the message that brings people together, Sean says. In 2004, Merricks man Sean was working locally as a park ranger and attended an international rangers conference, where he met global colleagues with bullet holes and machete wounds scarring their bodies. Stirred to action, Sean set out to make a documentary about the dangers faced by international park rangers. Taking almost 12 months to travel through 23 countries, he uncovered many inspiring stories along the way. The Thin Green Line documentary JUNE-JULY 2015 (44)

premiered in 2007, capturing people’s hearts around the world. Sean has received numerous awards for his work (ABC’s Australian Story dubbed him ‘The Game Changer’), support from royalty and celebrities and the foundation now provides much needed training, equipment and funding to park rangers across the globe.

Sean says that in the last decade, 1000 park rangers have been killed in the line of duty, mainly by commercial poachers and armed militia groups. “I’ve walked the ground with them, had a gun held to my head, been charged by elephants, had malaria and dengue fever, but at the end of the day I’m lucky enough to have a passport that brings me back to Australia. “They don’t have that option.” Despite his achievements and connections to people of wealth and power, Sean remains incredibly down-to-earth. He still calls the peninsula home and holds fundraising events locally, with the assistance of his ‘unofficial office’, the Merricks General Wine Store. “It doesn’t matter if I’m speaking with celebrities or dignitaries or that mum who www.mpmag.com.au

Yes, archery is back and it is hotter than ever. And now you can learn this fun and challenging sport for yourself, getting taught by national champions with local group Angel Archers. Dawn Nelson-Furnell, secretary-treasurer and coach, is a former Commonwealth Games competitor who now teaches people of all ages how to shoot arrows. “We are all Archery Australia accredited coaches and national judges, and as a result we’ve got members from Box Hill, Werribee, Pakenham and Brighton who come to Balnarring to train with us.” Dawn took up the sport at 13, was national champion at 18 and then gave it up to have a family. In 2006 she decided to have another crack and by 2010 was part of the Australian archery team at the Commonwealth Games in Delhi. “Obviously I love it,” says Dawn, a Crib Point resident and the CFO of Archery Victoria. Her husband Peter is also a coach, former president of Archery Victoria and national

In 2013, they were given permission to use the grounds at Emu Plains Reserve in Balnarring and now teach people aged from six to mid-70s. “Archery is actually safer than all ball sports because there are so many rules and regulations,” Dawn says. “It is an all ages sport and is great for family bonding because anyone can do it. “So we get a lot of dads and sons coming along, or mothers who watch their kids and then want to try it for themselves.” Angel Archers offers coaching for beginners and experienced archers in recurve, longbow and compound style bows. DREENA NAMED

MUM OF THE YEAR Many people joke about nominating their mum for ‘Mother of the Year’, but one very special Mornington woman can actually lay claim to the title. Dreena Lawrence-Gray was officially named Victorian Mother of the Year for 2015 by the charity group Barnardos after her foster daughter Lana nominated her in the statewide competition. Theirs is a heartwarming story, in which Dreena took in troubled teenager Lana five years ago and has been raising her as her own daughter ever since. After winning the Victorian arm of the competition in April, Dreena was flown to Sydney as a finalist in the Australian Mother of the Year. Although she didn’t win (the title went to Queenslander Leanne Robson), she met Prime Minister Tony Abbott at the ceremony at Kirribilli House, appeared on Seven’s Sunrise and was given a makeover

( 16

by Woman’s Day magazine. “It’s been a wonderful few weeks,” says Dreena, who now gets recognised by strangers in the street. “It’s given me a bit of a glimpse into the celebrity world,” she chuckles. Dreena, who manages school crossing supervisors, already had her own challenging teenage daughter, Rijana, when she decided to take in Lana as well. Born to heroin-addicted parents, Lana’s father died when she was was a toddler and her mother abandoned her to a life of abuse. At age 17, Lana herself was battling a drug problem and had just dropped out of school; she was staying on people’s couches when she befriended Rijana. One night Rijana confided in her mother that Lana had nowhere to go. Dreena, who had never considered being

a foster parent, did what she says anyone in her situation would. “When it comes to young people, you’ve got to provide this safe haven for them. “I wanted to help Lana, to guide her and give her love and support.” Lana, who is now 23 and goes by the surname Gray, is clean of drugs, has a steady job in customer service and rents her own apartment in the city. She nominated Dreena (who she introduces

to people as her mum) in the Barnardos competition to show her gratitude for Dreena’s love and support. “Without Dreena’s huge generous heart and her beautiful family, I would not be the person I am today,” Lana said. “I am eternally grateful.” Photographs: Dreena and Prime Minister Tony Abbott; Dreena with her mother and daughters Rijana and Lana.

Australian of the Year

Rosie Batty to speak in Mt Eliza

It has been 16 months since Tyabb boy Luke Batty was killed by his father while at cricket training. Since then, his mother Rosie Batty has stunned Australians with her candid and articulate manner and her tireless efforts to bring the issue of domestic violence to the fore—efforts which earned her the title of 2015 Australian of the Year. Journalist Jane Hone caught up with Rosie, who will be speaking at the Circle of Life event on June 19. How did you become involved with Miss Velvet and the Circle of Life? When Luke was killed, I was contacted by a friend and told that Beckie would like to donate half of the funds raised to the Luke Batty Foundation. Circle of Life sounds like a great event. It was a great event last year—a really great event. It was quite raw for me at that time. It was quite close to Luke’s death and it was one of the first times I got out in a social sense. It was a really uplifting and inspiring night, especially with all that female energy. I’m looking forward to having a really good evening. I just appreciate the effort people go to—it keeps me inspired and wanting to keep going. What did it mean for you to win Australian of the Year? Well, it’s an amazing opportunity. It’s conflicting: on the one hand you’re having amazing experiences, but at the same time, without Luke being killed, I wouldn’t be in the position I am now. I really embrace these opportunities but not without sadness. Has becoming Australian of the Year created more opportunities to promote your message and raise awareness? Absolutely. It’s been a very overwhelming schedule with a lot of requests for me to speak at or attend functions. I’m incredibly busy trying to make the most of everything that I can. It’s given me an opportunity at all levels—political, community… and I’m able to speak now and feel like I’m really pushing that message constantly. It’s a huge platform. What’s the main message you’re trying to promote in the world? That family violence is a gender issue. The statistics are that two women a week are being murdered at the hands of a partner or previous partner, and that the time of highest risk is when they choose to leave. I want everyone to know that there are two women a week murdered, and that one in three women are affected by family violence, no matter where they live, no matter where they come from, and no matter who they are. So around any community barbecue, or conference, or get-together, you can be sure that there’ll

( 18

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

Rosie with Layne Beachley at last year’s event be one in three women who have experienced family violence. And also one in every four children. Tell us about your vision for ‘healthy relationship programs’ in schools… I think it’s really important to look at long-term prevention—starting as young as kinder, all the way through. Because we have to change attitudes and change behaviours. We need to be looking at our future generations to ensure that as they grow up, we can expect that family violence is recognised as it should be, and that when they mature, they’ve got some other views of the world rather than the ones that are ingrained. Do you think it’s more important to target the behavior of men than educating women on how to leave? Absolutely! Women know how to leave. We need to educate men and women that violence is a choice that comes from a man’s desire for power and control. It’s men’s responsibility to understand the part that they play, to look at their sexist, derogatory comments, and understand that they are role models for the younger generation. What’s on the horizon for you this year? I’m working really hard, speaking at many events, hoping to raise awareness at fundraising events and with frontline services. I’ll be doing whatever I can to raise the profile of frontline services so people understand the resources and funding that are needed. I travel a lot and speak at a lot of different types of venues and that’s a large part of my year. I’m also part of an expert panel advising COAG on family violence—that’s something that the Prime Minister has put forward to me. I’m meeting with a lot of politicians and influencing change where I can. I’m maximising all opportunities. You must have a lot of energy! Well, it’s overwhelming. But I’ll look back at this year and know I did the best I could. I just feel really honoured, actually, that people regard me so highly. Advisors that come to you Introducing Unique Strategies: Accountants, Financial Planners & Mortgage Brokers. After moving to the peninsula with his young family in 2012, accountant Anthony Cattapan knew he wouldn’t be leaving. After working with accounting firms in Melbourne for over 17 years, he toyed with the idea of starting his own firm. It wasn’t until he surveyed existing firms on the Peninsula that an idea clicked, and Unique Strategies was born. Rather than using a traditional accounting and taxation firm structure, Unique Strategies incorporates an holistic approach to client services: not simply accounting and tax at year end, but wealth creation strategies and mortgage broking services too. Not only that, but Anthony also visits clients at a time that best suits them: whether before, after, or during standard office hours. This method of catering to all key pieces of the wealth puzzle has seen Unique Strategies grow from a home office in Blairgowrie to beautiful offices on Main Street Mornington, with four staff. Anthony now employs two CPA qualified accountants (Kirsty and Tanya), a financial planner (Karlee) and a loan writer and client services officer (Adele).

Anthony, of course, wears all three hats! Anthony’s key focus is to help peninsula-based families and businesses grow their wealth, using strategies that encompass all three areas (taxation, financial planning and loan structuring). FINANCIAL SEMINAR SERIES In the second half of 2015, Unique Strategies will host a range of finance and investment seminars, with all funds raised going to local charities and

community groups. Topics include Wealth Creation, Estate Planning, Business Succession Planning & Investing through Superannuation! The power of authentic learning “When am I ever going to use this in real life?” It’s a question that most of us will have (plaintively) asked our teachers on at least one occasion during our academic careers… and it’s not a bad one either. As a teacher of Year 9 Humanities, I was lucky enough to be an active participant in Woodleigh’s ‘City Bound’ project. Two weeks working and learning in the city, commuting, based at City Cite, our office block campus. This is a fully immersive experience. Two weeks where students work toward a parent presentation evening where their learning is on show, their efforts starkly visible, and their ability to work as a team, wholly critical. At no point during these two weeks was I asked that question. On the night, our students’ presentations were most impressive. The power of ‘authentic learning’ was plain to see – visible in the confidence it had given the presenters, in their ability to respond to questioning and challenges, and their grasp

( 20

of the subject matter they had been dealing with in the previous weeks. Projects such as ‘City Bound’ demonstrate, in the words of Professor Jan Herrington and her team from Murdoch University in Perth, that “learning is best achieved in circumstances resembling the real-life application of knowledge”. Dr Herrington describes a ‘model of authentic learning’ that includes nine elements, such as providing authentic contexts that reflect the way knowledge will be used in real life as well as authentic tasks and activities. The City Bound project addresses all nine of Dr Herrington’s elements of authentic learning. Indeed the staff of the City Cite facility, which Woodleigh uses as a base for the program, remarked that no other school put as much thought and effort into the project or maximised its opportunity as much as Woodleigh. City Bound is a world away from the education many of us experienced. One of the most frequent comments I heard from the parents at the showcase

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

evening was that they wished that they had been given similar opportunities themselves at school. They remarked too, on how much their sons and daughters had enjoyed the project, as well as the challenges it had offered. Here we have our own evidence of the power of authentic learning. Authentic learning, of course, aligns very

closely with the Woodleigh School vision and mission. We will continue to look for opportunities to provide authentic experiences for our students, and for parents to celebrate student success. David Burton Deputy Principal – Head of Woodleigh Campus

35KM, 3 DAYS, ONE CAUSE

BY LIZ ROGERS

Join the PHH Grampians Challenge 2016 Last year, 14 amazing women stepped out of their comfort zones and undertook a special challenge – to raise money for Peninsula Home Hospice (PHH) by each walking 50km along the Great Ocean Walk. Together these women, ranging from 16 to 66 years of age, raised a staggering $25,000 to support palliative care in the home and forged some fabulous friendships over the three days. Aptly named the ‘Girls’ Walk and Talk’ challenge, they talked, they laughed, they walked, they learnt a lot about each other and, most importantly, themselves. With this challenge being such a success, PHH is gearing up for its next challenge, a 35km hike through Victoria’s iconic Grampians. Under the watchful eye of Raw Travel guides, the challenge will this time be open to the boys as well. Challengers commit to raising $2000 each

to support PHH, a local charity that provides palliative care in the home to those within our community who are living with a lifethreatening illness, as well as step up to the physical challenge of the hike itself. The three day walk will take place from Friday March 18 to Sunday March 20, 2016 and registrations are now open. It will be a chance to de-stress, exercise and enjoy our natural wilderness while knowing the money raised has made a real and true difference to those choosing to receiving palliative care in the home. Registration is $100 per person and can be done online at www.rawtravel.com or by phoning Raw Travel on 1300 208 245. Full trip details are available at www. peninsulahospice.com.au/fundraising events or phone Kim on 5973 2403 or email kim@peninsulahospice.com.au

THE POWER OF SISTERHOOD BY KRISTY MARTIN

Life can be scary for asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women living in Australia. Imagine not being able to speak English. Not being able to complete basic tasks like grocery shopping or take public transport. Not having the skills to be able to work. Luz Restrepo knows this battle firsthand. After arriving in Australia from Colombia as a political asylum seeker five years ago, Luz suddenly felt she had no identity.

“It’s the feeling that I used to be someone, but here I am nobody.” Luz says she felt frightened, isolated and disempowered. “Here I can’t provide for my family in the supermarket, I was scared to answer the mobile, to take public transport. “My daughter had to be my translator. “I thought, who can empower me and change my situation?” Luz started English classes in Mornington, where she met other women experiencing similar hardships.

PHOTO BY LIBBY JANE This is where the idea for SisterWorks was born. To begin, the ‘sisters’ came together socially in their homes to cook traditional meals and teach others to do the same. Realising that together, they felt stronger and more powerful, and recognising a need for money to empower oneself, the women began selling crafts at markets around Melbourne, including Mornington’s Main Street Market. SisterWorks Inc. was born in May 2013 when a committee of volunteers joined Luz with legal, fundraising, marketing and administrative skills to give support and structure to her cause. “Our mission is to enable the most vulnerable asylum seeker, refugee and migrant women to work towards financial independence by developing the skills they need to settle happily into Australian society,” says Luz, who lives

in Dromana. Today, SisterWorks encompasses 68 women from countries like Chile, Iran, Liberia and Tibet. Almost half are refugees. They do weekly markets and pop up shops selling a variety of handcrafted goods and they also do educational visits to schools. “We have become like a family,” Luz says proudly. Work helps these women gain confidence, gives them life skills, breaks their dependence on welfare and improves health and family relations. Luz says the goal is to see these women develop the business skills and acumen to be financially self-sufficient and no longer require the help of SisterWorks. www.sisterworks.org.au

FACEBOOK FOR BUSINESS BY PENNY IVISON

Facebook loves its business pages because it charges owners to post status updates - if they want to reach more than a handful of followers, that is. And although the Facebook for Business seminar at Frankston Arts Centre on May 8 was essentially a promotion for Facebook business pages, there was coffee and breakfast and tips on how to get good organic reach to sweeten the deal. In a nutshell, the advice was: research shows that people use Facebook to stay informed, but they also want an emotional connection. Emotion + information (tailored to your audience) = good social media. Otherwise, pay for your social media ads.

Of course Mornington Peninsula Magazine advertisers get free plugs on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, with some of our posts getting 9,000+ views! And on May 8 we found out why, it’s because our posts are tailored to our audience and have a broad range of topics. Facebook staff provided helpful information on page functions and answered audience questions, while small business owners and social media manager at Madman Film, Ben Clay, provided insights into what works for them on the platform. A huge turnout of the local business community including MP Bruce Bilson made it a successful event all round.

100 YEAR CELEBRATIONS

SUCCESS FOR YOUNG SURF LIFESAVERS

ANZAC CENTENARY

Representatives of the Mt Eliza Girl Guides recently took part in the 2015 Anzac Day march. Leaders Bluebell, Tonkonie and Possum (pictured) said all who attended loved being part of the 100 year celebrations and felt very privileged to be involved in the march.

Two teams of Mount Martha surf lifesavers recently competed in the youth section of ‘The Aussies’ championships on the Gold Coast, with one bringing home a bronze medal. The 10 youths (two teams of five) had already competed in nine Victorian competitions and won gold and silver at the state finals in Ocean Grove. The Aussies is the largest event of its kind in the world, with 7000 surf lifesavers representing 311 Surf Life Saving Clubs competing over nine action-packed days in Coolangatta.

The event showcases Masters, Opens and, new to 2015, Youth Championships. This was the 100 year anniversary of The Aussies and also the first time the Mount Martha club has had Rescue and Resusitation (R&R) teams compete. Team manager Emma Malone said she was proud of the girls, who had trained neraly every week, over school holidays and on weekends. “It was a tremendous achievement and a testament to the girls’ dedication and commitment to the event and their club,” she said.

Blues

Sessions are back!

Jimi Hocking is one of the great Aussie bluesmen. Singer, songwriter, guitarist and mandolin player, he has been described as the ‘electric lovechild of BB King, Jimi Hendrix and T-Bone Walker’. Jimi is one of four top-notch musicians to feature in the second Mornington Peninsula Blues Sessions, an exclusive event to be held on Saturday July 11. The high-class concert also features Ian Collard, Alison Penny and Shannon Bourne. The four will perform acoustic numbers in duos and trios for the first half of the show, followed by a fantastic electric ensemble. Held at the Peninsula Community Theatre in Mornington, this nightclub-style event will also showcase premier peninsula wine, beer and produce. Having recently moved to Mt Martha, Jimi Hocking is a peninsula local who tours nationally and internationally for blues gigs and festivals. Jimi grew up in Melbourne and toured with The Angels in the 1980s before becoming lead guitarist with the iconic rock band The Screaming Jets, who he continues to tour with today.

Perfect weather and a worthy cause were the ingredients for success at the fifth annual Walk For Western Port, which generated about $16,000 for the Dolphin Research Institute. In the late ’90s he decided to go solo and take on the blues scene. Along with his playful banter, superb storytelling and wailing guitar, he now also has a strong following for his mandolin skills. “People see me as a guitar player, but some time ago I got the mandolin bug. “It is tuned completely differently to the guitar and more resembles the violin family. “At the start I did it for the novelty, I’d get up and play one of my three chord songs on mandolin. “Now it’s my second instrument.” Jimi says the blues sessions, the first of which was held in January and a howling success, is not like a pub gig in that the crowd is there for the music. “Often, particularly with free pub gigs, the music is secondary so people perhaps don’t value it as much. “But with this event, music lovers can go along and enjoy, knowing that they are not going to be interrupted.” For event details and tickets, head to www.morningtonpeninsulabluessessions.com MORE ARTS & EVENTS ON PAGES 82-87

The event, held on Sunday May 3, attracted 250 participants, including 24 school groups. Volunteers from the Hastings State Emergency Service (SES) also took part in the 2.3km walk along the Hastings foreshore. Face painting, a magician and sausage sizzle were also part of the fun, family friendly event. Organisers say sunny weather helped attract more people than last year (and plenty of pets!) and that the fundraising had almost doubled. The money was raised for the Dolphin Research Institute, a not-for-profit conservation group based in Hastings dedicated to protecting our marine life and bays. www.dolphinresearch.org.au

Travel Expo comes to

Beleura Village As winter approaches, many residents on the peninsula head north to longer days and the sun.

Finding the right holiday can often mean wading through a mountain of brochures, but a visit to the Beleura Village Travel Expo may help make the right decision. Even in retirement, our lives are busy. Catching quality time with the whole family can be difficult while juggling work and school timetables or when the tyranny of distance separates a family. Perhaps a multigenerational holiday is the answer! “We have seen many family groups with three generations travelling together. “For families who don’t get to see each other very often, travelling together is a great way to enjoy each other and share experiences,” says expo co-ordinator Julie Griffiths from National Network Travel & Cruise.

2015 TRAVEL EXPO

July 15

Cruising is one of the most popular options for multigenerational travel because there really is something for everyone. Most groups are happy to be doing their own thing all day, but love to catch up each night for dinner to see what everyone was busy doing. Here are Julie’s top tips for finding the right holiday for you:

SECURE STATEROOMS AS CLOSE AS CHOOSE A CRUISE SHIP THAT HAS POSSIBLE Date: Friday 15 May SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE Some of the cruise ships that are most 10am –ship, 3pmchildren and teens OnTime: the right cruise popular with families are also the larger Pointmorning Cook Village, 320 Point Road, holding Point Cook willAddress: be busy from until night withCookships, over 2000 passengers. If pools, waterslides, complimentary kids clubs, colouring and drawing contests, mini golf, and more. Plus, the cruise lines haven’t forgotten that parents need their space, too, with adults-only zones and quiet pool areas.

PLAN AHEAD

Timing is of utmost importance to ensure a group receives its top choice in staterooms, especially if they desire adjoining

you are not reserving a family suite, it’s much easier for family members to gather together if their staterooms are in close proximity to one another.

CAREFULLY PLAN DINING OPTIONS

Most cruise lines offer early and late dining options in the main dining room and are assigned to passengers prior to cruising. The early dining option often fills up first, so request early dining as soon as possible,

DREAMING OF THE SUN?

so that children can get to bed on time. Grandparents may also find the early dining option to be preferable.

COMMUNICATE CLEARLY WITH THE ENTIRE FAMILY

Before the trip, it may be helpful for one family member to serve as the liaison between those travelling and the travel agent. On board, communicate expectations for how much time you plan to spend together – and acknowledge it’s acceptable to spend some time apart. The Travel Expo will feature cruise operators, tour operators and travel insurance brokers. Each company will be offering generous discounted offers on the day for travel up to the end of 2016. Attract new customers using Bartercard

Bartercard renders more profits in building and construction

The recovering property market is a double coup for entrepreneur and Bartercard member Ghulam Wakil, who is trading to conserve more cash in his rendering business Naran Clad, and has laid down a cashless property deposit on barter. While the market is picking up and seeing a boost in construction services, a good working relationship with Silverline Homes is bringing $125,000 worth of extra

rendering and tiling work to Naran Clad each year, which is paid as a split of cash and Bartercard’s digital currency. Ghulam said he uses the digital currency to cover essential expenses in his business including tools and construction materials, website and advertising costs, and most recently a deposit on a property in Dandenong. “The fact you can secure property without spending cash in the current market goes beyond value for money - it removes the barrier to the property market,” he said. “I’ve additionally reduced interest with the extra cash I’ve conserved and put on top of the deposit. Ghulam has been in construction since 2002 and also has a clothing and importing company in Jakarta that he established in 2013. The company imports handmade pieces into Australia and Denmark, which he sells on Bartercard to further conserve cash in other areas of his business. “I’ve been a Bartercard member for four years and have saved around $300,000 in this time through trading with other members,” he said. He added that membership is a double coup under the latest Federal Budget where any asset costing up to $20,000 is 100% tax deductible. “I enjoy the same allowable deductions on goods purchased with Bartercard’s digital currency without spending cash – it’s a win win.”

The spirit of

giving Red Cross member, Genie Fiebig loves life and at 85 years of age still plays the organ at her church every Sunday, but she’s also seen her fair share of challenges. Genie’s connections with Red Cross go back to her childhood in war-torn Poland. After her relatives were separated by World War Two, Red Cross helped to reunite them. Years later, after Genie had moved to Australia, Red Cross blood donations helped her through a harrowing hip surgery operation. These days Genie receives daily phone calls from Red Cross volunteers who wish her a good morning and check she’s okay. Genie recently decided to leave a gift to Red Cross in her will. “I feel that I’ve been very, very fortunate in life and it’s one way of giving back,” she says.

Genie explains that she still needs to keep some money aside in case she moves into aged care, but by leaving a gift to Red Cross she can help people in Australia and further afield to live happier, healthier lives and get support when they need it.

Anyone who needs to make or update their will should mark July 29 in their calendar, as this is the day Red Cross has organised a special event at Mornington where local solicitors will donate their time to prepare a simple will for local residents for just $75 per person.

Ian Williamson, National Bequest Manager for Red Cross says: “Writing a will is one of the most important things you will ever do in your lifetime, and yet just under half of Australian adults still do not have one.”

Full details are below on this page.

“A gift in your will helps support the everyday work of Red Cross, both in Australia and around the world.”

Recognising that most parents have their own creative flair, Adrianne takes a laid back approach that lets the family take centre stage under her own strong visual eye. “Roy Boy Photography is all about finding the joy in the moment ... and capturing it for all time.”

“Once the ideas are in place, I do some research to source the location. We are so lucky in the bayside area with a range of locations to choose from.” “Whether it’s beach, bush or parkland, I’ve never had to use the same setting twice, and some of the best shots can be found in a client’s own backyard. One of my favourite shoots was in the family’s chook shed.” The result is photos that are timeless, engaging and always representative of the personalities involved.

CREATIVE APPROACH While some parents say the arrival of their first child brings a whole new view on the world, for Melbourne photographer, Adrianne Miller, that’s literally the case. After the birth of her son, Roy, last year, Adrianne started seeing the world through different eyes...or, in her case, a different lens. “I specialise in art photography that creates and captures moments in time. We focus on the smallest members of the family, usually that’s the kids, but it can be pets too!”

“Whether it’s capturing the colour and energy of a special birthday or observing a quiet moment, I aim to bring an artistic edge to the moment.” “The medium is important too,” says Adrianne. Every shoot of hers includes a large scale image printed on museum grade artwork paper, mounted. There’s also the opportunity to design and print everything from announcement cards to photobooks. “My inspiration for Roy Boy Photography came from hanging beautiful, timeless prints of my own little boy on the walls. I find so much joy in looking at them every day, I just want to share that.” ROY BOY Ph: 04049 00051 www.royboyphotography.com

With the government proudly declaring that this year’s budget is all about energising small businesses and helping them grow, one would think that they got a pretty good deal. The question is, will any of their measures inspire real change?

• T he cost of setting up a business, often legal and accounting fees, can now be written-off in the first year of business, effective July 1, 2015. Currently, the deduction must be spread over a five year period and considering that many small businesses may not be profitable during this time, the deduction would only further increase their losses, of which no tax is paid on.

SOME OF THE CHANGES INCLUDE:

The government is hoping these measures allow for small businesses to take the leap to bigger and better things, helping drive our local economy. While no one measure will instantly propel a small business into higher profit, the combination of good business planning, as well as utilising benefits announced in the budget, could help small businesses take a step in the right direction.

• I ncome tax rates for small business companies will be reduced from 30% to 28.5%, effective July 1, 2015. Therefore, for every $10,000 of profit made, $150 of tax will be saved. On face value that looks great, and if you are a profitable small business this can provide a great short-term benefit. Once you draw the profits out for personal use, however, you will still pay the same amount of tax as you have in the past. • A ssets purchased under $20,000 can now be written off instantly. This represents an increase of $19,000 from the previous limit and can be applied to unlimited purchases (motor vehicles, computers, machinery, etc). The increase brings a deduction that is normally claimed over a number of years into the first year of ownership. The write-off does not fund the asset purchase, it merely allows for it to be deducted from your income.

Everything we love about the peninsula, fresh every month

When an opportunity presents itself, it is always important to ensure that it fits within your current business plan. What these measures do is give small businesses the ability to decide if now is the right time to take the next step in their business evolution. I can’t stress enough the importance of thinking before acting. A knee-jerk reaction based on budget night announcements (which still needs to pass parliament) could be detrimental for a small business. Never underestimate the importance of sound, educated advice, while considering its impact on your business goals. As the 2015 financial year draws to a close, now is great time for you to reassess your current position and future cash flow expectations.

RHA Accounting RHA Accounting is an outcome focused accounting practice. The principal, Ross Hellyer, has spent over 30 years assisting individuals and businesses. A strong emphasis is based on listening to clients, quietly asking questions and providing sound advice. RHA clients are not only provided with strategies and advice but are assisted in implementing recommendations to ensure objectives and outcomes are achieved. Ross works strongly on the basis that professional solutions can be found to most problems. RHA takes the same sound approach to taxation and other compliance obligations. Compliance is the word – we are all responsible to comply and it is important that lodgements are met properly and on time. ATO payment arrangements can be made where necessary. Simple logic and respect applied to taxation obligations can generate cooperation from the tax office and solve most stressful situations. Multiple years’ returns need not be a problem, says Ross. “It’s all in the approach you take and how you deal with the Tax Office. “Ultimately they want you to lodge and are happy to assist in the process” The same attention to outcomes is applied to tax planning and preparation of taxation returns for lodgement. It is important to know the tax law. With proper strategies and planning, better outcomes can be achieved. For business tax, Ross says that many businesses can structure better to protect assets and better manage taxation outcomes. Make the change to RHA Accounting and experience the difference. The End of Financial Year is Almost Here

By now you will have lodged three out of four BAS statements for the year, so it’s a great time to ask your accountant to do some year end planning. Recent budget changes need to be considered when planning asset purchases. It’s also time to reconcile your superannuation payments to be sure that your final payment is able to be processed quickly after your last June payroll. To claim a tax deduction, payments must be received by the super fund prior to June 30. It’s a good idea to prepare payment summaries for your staff in the current version of your accounting software prior to upgrading for the new financial year. Whether you are using hosted or desktop software such as Reckon Accounts or MYOB, or online products such as Xero or QuickBooks Online, we can assist you with checking your file and preparing for the new financial year. AT Main Street Eyecare From the front of the store, one might assume Main Street Eyecare was like any other optometrist. But once you step inside, you will realise this business is anything but ordinary. Main Street Eyecare houses a wonderful array of funky, chic and incredibly individual spectacle frames. After all, everybody wears different clothing and shoes, so why not select the frames that complement and enhance your unique personality? You can find handmade Australian designs such as Paul Taylor and Jono Hennessy, stylish European pieces like Lindberg and Michel Henau, and gorgeous Japanese frames like Ogreen, that you won’t find anywhere else on the peninsula. Design your very own bespoke specs courtesy of South Australian designer Roger Henley (who may even throw in a matching accessory!), or try on a pair of Brendan O’Keefe’s classy hand-pressed aluminium frames. The Paul Taylor collection includes chunky retro styles that come with darling vintage names like ‘Doris’ and ‘Audrey’, while Jono Hennessy’s vibrant tropical-inspired specs are for those seeking to make a bold statement. For something a tad more unusual, the Carter Bond collection gives the impression of being made from wood, while the frames from Danish company Monoqool are actually made using cutting-edge 3D printer technology. As one of the longest-established optometrists in Mornington, Main Street Eyecare is a trusted and professional practice offering expert advice and care for your eyes. Run by Kay Tyrie and her son Matt, this family business also boasts three optometrists - Louise Hankinson, Michael Kozulin and Chris Panagos - who are equally passionate about eyecare. This dedicated team stresses the importance of regular eye testing, which can help detect things like glaucoma, macular degeneration and cataracts. They also provide contact lens services, fitting and advice. Main Street Eyecare has recently undergone a modern revamp to even better reflect the contemporary, fun and stylish spectacle ranges they have in-store. An Evening of Power and Positive Change If you’re looking for a night of warmth, humour and inspiration this winter, then look no further than the Circle of Life event being held on June 19. Organiser Beckie (owner of Miss Velvet), is not your average clothing store owner, and Circle of Life is not your average fundraising event. Both are founded on the principle of reciprocity—of giving and receiving, hence the name Circle of Life. The giving part refers to the fact that all funds raised go to one of three important charities: the Luke Batty

( 70

Foundation, First Seeds Fund (which breaks cycles of domestic violence and abuse) and 2BMe (a grant-giving foundation for women and children on the poverty line). If you need convincing that domestic violence is a continuing problem, consider these recent statistics from OurWATCh: 1 in 5 Australian women had experienced sexual violence. 1 in 6 Australian women had experienced physical or sexual violence from a current or former partner. 1 in 4 Australian women had experienced emotional abuse by a current or former partner. 1 in 3 Australian women had experienced physical violence. The event, which is in its second year, is set to raise over $40,000 to combat these figures. But Beckie believes it’s just as important to be able to receive gifts in return. This year, attendees will be inspired by talks from Australian of the Year Rosie Batty and inspirational author Carrie Bailee, treated to a fashion parade, laugh at the comedy stylings of Kelly Nash, enjoy a two-course meal (alcohol included), and take home a ‘beautiful and exclusive’ gift bag containing $100 worth of goodies donated by sponsors. It’s time to make a difference. Get in quick before tickets sell out. BOOK NOW - Circle of Life, Friday June 19. Morning Star Estate: 1 Sunnyside Road Mount Eliza. June is your time to get your special message across. Are you presenting yourself in the best possible light? If not then what changes do you need to make? Nevertheless you have fun. June sees your professional life become extra busy, particularly if you work in any area connected with communications, marketing, teaching or getting a message across. If you have been considering a change of direction then the alignment of the planets may be the trigger this month.

If you are single then you may attract a potential partner. If you have contracts then these are changing. You are always known for your dutiful nature. This month sees you focusing on your daily responsibilities. It is time to attend to the details that crop up from day to day. You are likely to withdraw a little from society while you focus on everyday jobs and other obligations. Satisfaction comes from completing tasks.

It is time to find some creative solutions to anything that is incomplete or troubling you in life. June is a positive month for you if you take each day as it comes and enjoy yourself. If you have children, or are responsible for other people’s children, then you may spend more time with them now.

Home and family take centre stage in your life right now. You may have extra responsibilities at work but the focus remains on your family. This is an ideal time to ensure that your family and home environment support you in a positive and uplifting manner.

Laser and IPL hair removal is one of the most commonly performed cosmetic procedures in Australia.

Over the last few decades, the technology behind hair removal has evolved in leaps and bounds. Susan Verheyen from Advanced Skin and Laser has been performing these treatments for over 15 years and says: “The hair does not come back if the procedure is performed correctly with the correct equipment and by experienced operators with a strong knowledge of skin and hair.” For hair removal, lasers and IPL machines work by delivering photothermal energy to the hair follicle. Put simply, it is necessary to ‘heat’ the follicle, where the hair is nourished from, to destroy the growth pattern. In selective photothermolysis, wavelengths of light are chosen to target a chromophore (target) without causing damage to surrounding structures. There are a number of targets, including melanin, water and collagen. In the hair removal process, the target is melanin (brown colour), to keep it simple. Because melanin is found in the surface of the skin, cooling off is required to avoid damage to the skin and this is where experienced operators, with efficient medical equipment stand out. Both laser and IPL machines are very effective for hair removal and therefore there is not one ‘best’ machine. Although these types of hair removal are very safe, they are paramedical procedures with the potential for serious adverse outcomes if not performed correctly. Unfortunately, over the past few years poorer quality equipment with inconsistent energy output and wavelengths, which can vary each output, are making some clinical results unpredictable. IPL PHOTO-REJUVENATION: At least once a year, an IPL treatment for the removal of sun damage, general redness and uneven skin colour is a must.

Create a NEW YOU, or simply remove the surface damage for a new refreshed skin. Sue says rosacea, a type of skin inflammation, is one of their most commonly treated conditions, along with acne. Although rosacea can not be ‘cured’, life is much easier once IPL treatments, together with LED (Light Emitted Diode), are used. Again, with rosacea, experience is the key. REMEMBER: Photo rejuvenation can be performed all over the body, chest, hands, legs, arms and back with great success. PEELS – NEW POSSIBILITIES: A vast amount of new information is coming forward in ingredient technology, combination peels and applicable methods. Clients know that peels are a very efficient way to remove cell debris. The latest new generation peels have created a demand never seen before to safely and successfully deliver a polished, fresh skin with minimal discomfort. While high concentrations are sometimes advantageous, the more experienced technician will understand the PH and the combination aspects of the ‘new generation’ of peels. The best example is lactic acid, which has a larger molecule than many other ingredients, thus combined with other acids can control the downtime for precise application. WEIGHT LOSS Virtual Gastric Band Hypnosis Program

SUCCESS

What if I told you there was a safe and effortless way to lose weight T H R O U G H without dieting?

HYPNOSIS

That you could shed centimetres simply through utilising the power of your mind? Mt Eliza clinical hypnotherapist Gayle Dwyer offers a Virtual Gastric Band Program, in which hypnosis enables the participant’s subconscious mind to believe that the stomach is smaller. Straight after the first session it is easy to eat less while still enjoying food. The five-week program, which has long-term results, harnesses the power that every individual holds within them to make changes to their lives. The Virtual Gastric Band allows them to eat what they want, but in smaller portions. Gayle also helps work through the psychological triggers that may be contributing to overeating. Through relaxation, hypnotherapy deals with the part of the brain where all of our programs are stored, and eating is one of them. “Most of us eat without thinking about it too much, leading to overeating. “By tapping into the deeper part of the mind hypnotherapy is like ‘flicking a switch in the brain’, which leads to eating and being satisfied on smaller amounts of food without the mental

battle going on,” says Gayle, adding that she has a great success rate with the remarkable weight loss program, first established by Sheila Granger in the UK. “There is nothing magical or mystical about hypnotherapy, instead it is a method that enables a person to help themselves.

“My clients are losing weight at a healthy, sustainable rate.” “Not only are they happier because they have more control over their lives, but they also comment on how much more relaxed they feel. “With more energy and a healthier, happier mindset, the program is having a positive flow on effect to other areas of their lives.” Gayle, whose home-based clinic trades as gd therapies, uses not only hypnotherapy but other powerful techniques like energy psychology (EFT) to get relief from trauma, anxiety and depression, stress and other emotional issues or simply help you connect with who you really want to be, and what you want achieve in life. Consider this:

• As our age goes up, our metabolism goes down - causing weight to go up. • Muscle mass down - metabolism slows weight goes up. • Stressful emotions go up, triggering weight gain. • Exercise goes down – weight goes up. • Sleep goes down – weight goes up. • Portion sizes go up, calories go up – weight goes up. Let’s explore some of these ups and downs:

AGE AND METABOLISM:

Metabolism refers to the continuous chemical processes inside your body that allow life and normal functioning. These include the breaking down of nutrients from food, and those that build and repair our body. Unfortunately, as we age our metabolism rate slows down, thus reducing our ability to burn calories. But do not let ageing be an excuse.

Strategies:

• Reduce portion sizes • Get active – it boosts metabolism • Nutritionally - cut back on simple carbs and replace with protein. Protein helps with fat burning.

STRESS:

When one is stressed, adrenal glands release a hormone called cortisol, which makes you fat. Cortisol also breaks down lean muscle, which in turn slows metabolism.

Weight Loss

The ups & downs of

Strategies:

• Deep relaxation, especially deep breathing & mindfulness • Regular exercise • Adequate nutrition - (eg. reduce simple carbs / sugar)

PORTION SIZES:

This is the key driver to weight control, conquer this one and be amazed at the results. To combat overeating, some people are turning to gastric band surgery to make their stomach smaller so they will feel fuller quicker. While a few have gained success with this procedure, it does carry risks, as with most surgeries. More people are now turning to hypnotherapy to help control overeating with good results.

Strategy:

• One very successful hypnosis technique called The Virtual Gastric Band provides similar results to the surgical option. The Virtual Gastric Band hypnosis is a nonsurgical technique that uses the power of hypnosis to retrain you to be satisfied with smaller amounts of food. It changes how you think about food and is safe, painless and has no side effects. Chris Newell is the owner of NeWell Life Solutions. ANDREW ROGERS

Andrew Rogers has systematically developed the main themes of his full scale bronze sculptures through an extensive series of maquettes which on a similar scale present the variety and inventiveness of his practice. This retrospective exhibition will present these maquettes and allied small works to demonstrate the evolution of his various ideas and sculptural forms. Exploring the rhythm of life, Rogers’ quest is to create and encode sculpture with spiritual meaning. He seeks to create a metaphor for the eternal cycle of life, growth and all the attendant emotions that colour and inform the human existence. A Burst of Colour at Manyung this Winter

JULY EXHIBITION ‘Evocative Landscapes’

The June/July exhibitions at Manyung Gallery in Mt Eliza will be a celebration of vibrancy and Australian landscapes from a collection of award-winning artists. Colour Your Works and Brighten Your Day (June 5 – 28) JANINE DADDO Daddo has an “enthusiasm for life expressed in joyous, colourful paintings.” She uses a technique of layering colours to give added texture to her works. For Daddo, painting is “like creating a conversation, a memory, a yearning.” HELEN DI TOMASSO Di Tomasso explores ways of playing with line and motif in her work, as well as colour and juxtaposing soft and bold tones. She is interested in other cultures and the convergence of memory and identity. Evocative Landscapes (July 3 – 31) MELANIE HAVA Hava combines her Austrian and Aboriginal heritage to express her love of Austrian and Australian landscapes. She started in the 1990s by painting on digderidoos and canvas at local markets in her native Mt. Isa.

PETER COAD Coad displays a “distinctive and masterful fusion of colour and composition”, reflecting the vibrant hues of the natural world. He is inspired by ancient cultures and their art forms. GREG MALLYON The dominant theme of Mallyon’s work is the Australian landscape, and he uses aerial and satellite photographs taken while on field trips as inspiration. His work has been exhibited in Australia, Europe, Asia and the United States. GUY DETOT French sculptor Detot has called Australia home since 1982. Detot has a background in professional dancing and is inspired by “movement, rhythm, lyricism and the flow of nature”. His exhibition is the first to be shown in Manyung’s sculpture room. CAROLE FOSTER Foster uses a modern abstract impressionist style to convey a combination of works of a quiet nature and high energy, vibrant pieces. She employs a unique method of colour application, often drawing on the Australian outback. Manyung Gallery Mt Eliza A: 1408 Nepean Highway Mt Eliza P: 9787 2953 W: manyunggallery.com.au

THE BEAUTY OF LIFE For local artist Angela Russo, inspiration lies in the beauty and wonder of life – the people, the places, the animals. “My desire in painting is to share this beauty, to evoke happy memories, to hear the music, to be uplifted and feel the joy,” she says. “My artwork is about capturing the essence of the subject matter and this is done in my favourite medium of pastel and charcoal. I love the vibrancy of the colours, the directness of the application and the diversity of effects.” You can see Angela’s work on display in the foyer of Mornington Library from June 13 to July 10. Her collection is categorised into three groups: African animals, musicians and landscapes. The animal artworks were inspired by the artist’s visits to an open range zoo, with each captivating painting telling its own story. The musician collection, in charcoal and conté, was inspired by Angela’s love of music and the many musical performances she has attended. “When I look at these, I can hear the music and feel the joy it gives.” Anglea continues: “The Mornington Peninsula, Melbourne and Venice feature in the places I have captured in my

FAULTY TOWERS THE DINING EXPERIENCE Join Basil, Sybil and Manuel for a night of madness, mayhem and their trademark faulty service at Brooklands of Mornington. Faulty Towers the Dining Experience is two-thirds improvised, with no two performances of this ‘food-snortingly funny’ show being the same, so you can go again and again and never see the same thing twice. You truly can expect the unexpected as these three infamous hoteliers serve up a three-course meal along with a side of disorder and a dollop of disarray for dessert. The performance hits Brooklands on Thursday July 9 and Thursday August 20 and features impeccable comic timing that is sure to have you in stitches. This internationally acclaimed tribute to the BBC’s best-loved sitcom Fawlty Towers was born in Brisbane back in 1997. It comes to Mornington during yet another globetrotting year, packed with a tour of 20 countries that includes debuts in New York and

Singapore, three months in Canada, return seasons at the Sydney Opera House and the UK’s Royal Albert Hall, plus an ongoing London West End residency that ranks consistently high in Trip Advisor’s Top London Performances. The cast for Brooklands of Mornington features: Sara Dignam (Sybil), Andy Foreman (Manuel), and Jordan Edmeades (Basil) in July. In August, Geoffrey Reczek delights as Manuel. Cost for dinner and the show is $79, to book contact Brooklands of Mornington on 5973 9200 or email sales@brooklandsofmornington.com. au. The pair are passionate about the welfare of their animals and say having having healthy and happy cows is a priority. The cattle are pasture raised, live in a herd environment and are grass fed. “We transport the cattle ourselves so they are handled gently by people that they trust. “We MSA grade each carcass as a further guarantee of quality.” All beef is long hung for 14-18 days prior to being cut up by a butcher and vacuum packed for freshness. Premium quality is of the highest priority, says Ali. “We take one steak from each animal (rump or round steak) and pan fry it to medium. “We class it as acceptable if it can be cut with a serrated edged butter knife.” Ali says the beef has outstanding flavour and melts in your mouth. “Our cattle are slow growing and take 2-3 years to be ready to be processed. “This growth rate, combined with the natural feed, produces

To maintain the freshness and liveliness of the local produce in every jar, Lydia lowered the added sugar, allowing the fruit to add natural sweetness and with fresh herbs, citrus and the use of spices, Lydia enhanced and complemented the flavours of the produce, giving you a

delicious taste sensation. Lydia offers serving suggestions for all her creations on the SPREAD website. Spread products are available at a number of small businesses on the Mornington Peninsula also at local farmers’ markets and the SPREAD online store. FARM FRESH TO YOU BY LIZ ROGERS

Not visited Woolumbi Farm in Tyabb yet? Well now’s the time to treat yourself to a real taste of terrific home grown product.

Bittern Community: Every Sunday at Bittern railway station.

Woolumbi Farm owners Kenneth and Sonya Neff have created a fabulous farm gate store where you can source the best free-range lamb, beef, pork and smallgoods, plus enjoy a vast array of locally grown organic fruit and vegetables and hand-made condiments. Their ethical and environmentally sustainable farming practice also ensures the customer gets the highest quality product at the lowest cost to the environment. Deliciousness is paramount at Woolumbi Farm. Having just upgraded from a class three to a class two kitchen means Kenneth and Sonya will be making pre-prepared meals like lasagne, curries, pies, pates and stocks in addition to their already scrumptious jams, chutneys, sauces and preserves. Their new boning room is almost complete allowing them to butcher onsite, and their already full of flavour range of gourmet sausages is soon to be expanded. Kenneth is a master in Charcuterie (art of making small goods) and will be running sausage, salami, pancetta, coppacola and prosciutto making courses on July 4 and 5 at $198 respectively. Call 0417 523 173 for further details. (Morning and afternoon tea is provided.) While you’re there, see the lovely range of hand-made (all by Sonya and Kenneth) leather goods too, or check out the apple and pear cider pressing weekend on the Queen’s birthday every year. ‘TIS THE SEASON FOR PIES Winter is here and what better way to warm yourself up than by devouring some delicious homemade pies, pasties and sausage rolls? Head along to Ox & Co Bakery on Dava Drive, Mornington, where you’ll find such yummy treats, including beef pies, chicken pies, vegie pasties and homemade sausage rolls. These winter warmers are all made with love and care onsite by Ox’s wife, Belinda.

All pies are packed with 30-day aged Victorian beef and encased in traditional butter pastry. They contain no boosters or fillers - a practice used elsewhere of adding a chemical concoction that boosts the volume of the meat, Ox says. The plain beef pies are available in traveller, double and family sizes, while the single serve traveller varieties include beef and mushroom, beef and cab sav or chicken and leek, made from quality free range chicken. The sausage rolls come from an old family recipe and the vegie pasties are made from fresh vegetables pre-roasted in herbs and garlic. Pair one of these delights with delicious coffee and grab your weekly dose of bread while you are there. NEW LABEL, SAME QUALITY AT BLUE BAY Put simply, Mornington’s Blue Bay Cheese produces handmade and awardwinning dairy products that are created from farm fresh locally sourced milk. Time is of the essence in crafting these true to taste cow and goat cheeses, and kefir (extremely active probiotic) products. Milk is collected within hours from grass fed livestock, and the company’s finely tuned pasteurisation techniques ensure the maximum amounts of nutrients are retained. Combine this ‘from nature direct to you’ philosophy with the perfect balance of taste and texture and you have a uniquely peninsula product that is healthy and flavoursome. As Blue Bay Cheese has grown, cheese maker and owner Andre Kogut has kept to his ‘simple is best’ motto. Now with the integration of the Blue Bay Cheese line into Coles supermarkets – check the Blue Bay Cheese Facebook page at www.facebook.com/bluebaycheese for details of launch coming in July – Andre is rebranding his delicious dairy product. Look out for the fresh Blue Bay Cheese labels at markets and on the supermarket shelf, but remember - all your favourite cheeses like Sichuan pepper and chilli or citrus and orange vintage cheddar, or Goat Haloumi, Chevre or Mozarella will remain the same - purely delicious. A favourite Rosebud venue just got hotter with the arrival of the “Smokin’ Blues and Texas BBQ Sundays” making the GPO a destination for your Sunday lunch and afternoon entertainment. While listening to top-notch blues, order off the new Texas BBQ menu, showcasing the best in Americanstyle barbecue. Smoke barbecues are a way of life and the only way to BBQ in the United States. The GPO has two commercial smokers from Texas and is gaining a strong loyal following from the local and tourist clientele for its succulent smoky meats. “The depth of flavour in the smoked steaks is incredible,” according to head chef Patrick Bowring. GPO’s 600g grass fed rib eye (sourced through Greg’s Butchers in Rosebud), is barrel smoked and then seared and has fast become iconic, along with the Pulled Pork Slider with pickled carrot, jalapeno and bourbon BBQ sauce in brioche - a true bargain at just $6!

It’s not often you walk into a shop and experience an imaginary journey to far away lands, but European store La Brocante seems to offer exactly that. This Red Hill South store was relocated from the inner city by owners Penny Attiwill and Matt Learmonth late last year, after they came to live on the peninsula in the original 1870 Red Hill Post Office. La Brocante is a magnet for lovers of design, travel, collecting and decor with its fusion of all things eclectic, vintage, upcycled or simply curious from Europe and beyond. The store positively hums with atmosphere and style and most of its vintage stock is handpicked by the owners on buying trips to Europe. There are large pieces such as tables, restored club chairs, wine racks and cupboards, while smaller pieces include vintage French codd-neck bottles, textile factory bobbins and a selection of rewired French lighting. Complementing this ever-changing vintage range are several new ranges from Europe, including French and Italian linen, Scottish cushions, French chocolates, and that famous French soft drink, Orangina.

CAN WE BE

CARBON NEUTRAL? Mornington Peninsula Shire Council is aiming to be the fourth council in Victoria with carbon neutral accreditation. In accordance with this, the council is currently seeking community input on its Carbon Neutral Options report, which identifies a range of options for achieving carbon neutrality to ensure our community reduces the risks associated with climate change, lowers energy costs, and minimises impacts of shire activities. The report presents several options the shire could implement to achieve zero net emissions or become accredited as carbon neutral under the federal government’s National Carbon Offset Standard accreditation. Key benefits for the shire in becoming accredited as carbon neutral include reducing the shire’s greenhouse gas emissions and resources used, as well as saving money and reducing impact on climate change. Mornington Peninsula Shire Mayor Councillor Bev Colomb said carbon neutrality is an ambitious and forward-thinking approach to long-term environmental stewardship. “Only three councils in Victoria are currently accredited as Carbon Neutral,” she said, adding that the council had a strong commitment to environmental stewardship and ongoing leadership across climate change and environmental awareness. Community input to the options report closes on Friday June 19. Council will consider community submissions relating to the report at a meeting on June 24. Have your say at http://www.mornpen.vic.gov.au/Whats_On/Your_Say or email carbonneutral@mornpen.vic.gov.au with your thoughts.

Most gardeners will tell you that their compost is the life source of their garden. For those with an edible garden composting is important for you to maintain the health and fertility of your crops. While the primary function of composting is to recycle nutrients in order to return them to our soil to feed our plants, it also helps to reduce the amount of waste going into landfill, thus helping to reduce the impact our households have on the wider environment. Many families these days will have a compost bin out the back of the yard in which food scraps, leaves and lawn clippings are housed. Unfortunately, often these bins do little to help break down your waste in the short term and serve only as a storage vessel and beacon to small flies and mice. You will find that over time the waste does break down, but it can take many, many months and rots rather than composts. While there are many ways to compost, there are a three main composting methods that homeowners can use to recycle their food and garden waste; compost heaps (including bays and bins), worm farms and liquid manures.

Bulk garden waste, spent crops and lawn clippings can go into the traditional compost heap, compost bay or compost bin. It is important though that the compost receives sufficient oxygen to feed the bacterial driving force at the heart of your compost. You need to also ensure that the pile has adequate moisture, is layered well and has a good ratio of dry to wet matter (carbon to nitrogen). It is worth doing some research in order to understand the composting process better to produce optimum results. The easiest way to deal with kitchen food waste is to use a worm farm. These can be readily purchased from nurseries and hardware stores, though it is easy to make your own using recycled materials such as polystyrene boxes, bathtubs or old rubbish bins. When used well, worm farms don’t tend to smell as much as the common compost bin. You also get the added benefit of a constant supply of worm juice and worm castings, some of the best natural fertilisers you can get (depending on what you feed them, of course). Weeds can also be composted, but not with your garden waste compost system. We can use weeds separately to form liquid manures, thus retaining the goodness they have drawn from the soil. Old bins

work well for this purpose. If you grow comfrey, nettle, nasturtiums or abundant herbs, these will all benefit your liquid manure by increasing the range of nutrients and minerals in your solution. Composting needn’t be confined to a single plastic bin in the back corner of your garden. Using a combination of systems can provide you with an array of ready to use fertilisers for your food crops by retaining many of the nutrients that are coming out of your garden and kitchen.

Happy composting. Drew Cooper, Edible Gardens www.ediblegardens.com.au

FINE CRAFTSMANSHIP AT T&G ANTIQUES T&G Antiques is now open for business in Red Hill. The town’s natural beauty captivated owners Tim and Grace Gassin, and both felt it would resonate with the character of T&G Antiques. “At T&G Antiques, we’re always on the search for beauty that stands the test of time,” says Grace. The T&G Antiques collection contains fine furniture, art and decorative objects and at present includes a rustic oak sword chest carved with the initials ‘I.S.’, which dates to around 1700; a colonial Australian cedar sofa; and a stunning pair of Regency chairs (c.1825) re-upholstered with their original horsehair stuffing and covered in a rich

navy blue horsehair fabric. “Our focus on British and colonial pieces from the 18th and early 19th centuries — a time before mass production — reflects our appreciation of fine craftsmanship,” Grace explains. “The quality and restrained elegance of furniture from this period is hard to match.” Tim stresses the pair’s personal pride in T&G Antiques. “Grace and I only select objects we personally find striking or worthy, pieces of good proportion and design that epitomise traditional and restrained good taste,” he explains. “We try to find pieces of character that proudly wear

the signs of their history rather than being compromised through over-restoration.’ Do you, like Grace and Tim, appreciate classic design and character in your furniture?
