Living local and shopping local is at the heart of Mount Eliza Village. Christmas is coming, so now’s the time to get your presents organised by visiting one of the many fashion and homewares stores or health and beauty spots to organise a gift voucher for your special someone. And don’t forget the Mt Eliza Farmers’ Market on the fourth Sunday of every month, which is well-known for its fresh produce, unique gifts and being the place to get together with families and friends. There has been plenty of action on the street over the past six months in Mount Eliza. The Eliza Square development has commenced and will offer yet another premium shopping experience. The carpark works behind the centre will be finished by Christmas, and there are ongoing upgrades to small premises around the Village. The Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce welcomes The Girl & Bull restaurant, clothing store GoLightly, The Artisan Storeroom, Brooklyn Minute Cafe and Nana Peg (taken over Mt Eliza Deli) to the Village. These businesses represent the diversity and charm our beautiful and ever-evolving Village provides for everyone. Come celebrate your local village this spring/summer in unique Mount Eliza style. The flowers are out and the cafes are buzzing with warm weather banter. Participate in the Halloween pumpkin hunt, the Christmas gingerbread house competition, Christmas carols, late night shopping on December 7 and mark February 3 in your diary for the free music festival on the Village Green and in surrounding streets. Shop local to support all of these activities funded by your local businesses. It’s all about the community – at Mount Eliza Village. Ph: 9708 8222 Shop Taste Indulge

Leaf leads traffic to vibrant Village First came the charming wrought iron welcome signs and the mermaid benches, then the colourful bikes in the Village Green. Now Mount Eliza Village has an official gateway sign. You may have already seen it on the Nepean Highway near the intersection of Canadian Bay Rd on the approach from Frankston. Mt Eliza Village Magazine spoke with Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce Marketing and Development Co-ordinator, Alison Doherty, about the tall structure containing a leaf and the words ‘shop taste indulge’. “It’s a gateway sign to draw more attention

to Mount Eliza Village, and for passing traffic to realise it is a vibrant shopping precinct,” she explained. “We have one sign up now and eventually there will be two. The other one will be somewhere on the approach from Mornington.” The Chamber of Commerce, which is the local business association, initiated the project and Mornington Peninsula Shire Council funded it. The leaf design is a reflection of the treed surrounds. “It symbolises Mount Eliza,” Ms Doherty said. The chamber is also working with the council on other village streetscape improvements, including new median strip plantings.

Ben and twins Abrielle and Micha inspect some of the trees the Baden Powell Park Scout Group will be selling.

Do you finish dressing your Christmas tree then stand back and wonder why it looks like you’ve just grabbed a bucket full of decorations and thrown them at it? Well, this year it can be different. First, make sure the tree is situated firmly and horizontally in its pride of place. A good-quality tree stand is not inexpensive but it will support your tree and keep it upright throughout the Christmas season. Second, put your lights on the tree first. Begin at the base of the trunk and work your way up, wrapping them round the branches towards the top of the tree. Next, starting at the top of the tree and working down, begin draping your garlands. Don’t be afraid of mixing it up and using plain and fancy ones on the same tree. Finally, it’s time to hang your ornaments. Choose your favourites

first and place them in the most prominent positions. Next, place the larger ornaments evenly throughout the tree, finishing off with any last clip-on ornaments - and don’t forget the angel or star for the top. Now you know how to decorate it easily, you need to make sure you have the perfect tree. The Baden Powell Park Scout Group will be selling gorgeous trees from two locations this year: at the Scout hall on the corner of Baden Powell Drive and Humphries Rd, and from Frankston Bunnings, Frankston Power Centre. Opening hours are each weekend before Christmas in December from 8am-1pm. To make it even easier and have a totally hassle-free time of it, pre-order your tree and the Scouts will organise the delivery (South Frankston and Mount Eliza only). Just phone 0409 962 449 or order online at bpp.org.au

Talking Taste with The Ranelagh Club’s Head Chef Nicole Hawley

You’re welcome!

By Liz Rogers What’s the best thing about being Head Chef at The Ranelagh Club? The view! The Ranelagh Club is position-perfect. The next best thing is I can be very creative with the local produce. Tell us a bit about your training. I have German and English heritage, and my family love to cook. I did my apprenticeship in the Navy on the HMAS Arunta, which was a great training ground.

produce and there’ll be more grazing dishes to enjoy outside - think family friendly pizza and pasta. And finally, how do you keep reinventing the menu? I’ve been doing this for over 15 years and love to experiment. Why not explore and create? I’ll always keep the dishes that clients love, like duck liver pate, but I am keen to offer our clients new and fresh tastings too. It’s exciting!

Do you have a favourite style of cooking and why? My dishes are influenced by my travels and how I was brought up. Home-style hearty (German and Italian) dishes are my favourite. Tell us what’s on The Ranelagh Club spring/summer menu. Our clients will be enjoying a diverse tasting - we’ve already had a Mexican and Greek night - and we’ll be offering weekend breakfasts too. Endermologie on Humphries Peninsula Endermologie owner Niamh Hislop knows Lipomassage protocols work. In her training as a general nurse and working at The Harley Medical Group (UK’s leading cosmetic clinic) she witnessed the benefits Endermologie offered her clients. Having identified the need for an affordable solution to cellulite and body contouring locally (and knowing that treatment results vary according to therapist), Niamh began Peninsula Endermologie with a results-driven focus. She explains. “I’ve used this technique on myself and many more clients so I know it works. Lipomassage gradually reduces the appearance of cellulite and unwanted fat deposits. This technique has been used throughout Europe for years and has been proven with more than 140 clinical

Rob’s heartfelt thank you BY ANDREA KELLETT

It’s just a month or two since Licciardos Gallery Bar & Grill Mt Eliza closed and it’s fair to say the news has spread swiftly. Rob Licciardo announced the closure on Facebook and now wants nothing more than to express his thanks. “I really want to say thank you to all my friends who came to the restaurant,” he says. “I prefer ‘friends’ to the word ‘customers’. They’ve backed me all the way.” His youngest of three daughters, Maddie, who worked alongside Rob and his wife Christine, also took to social media after the closure: “We would like to send thanks to EVERYONE who has supported us over the past years and we will be forever grateful.” Licciardos Gallery Bar & Grill Mt Eliza opened five years ago and was Rob’s second successful restaurant in Mount Eliza (his first, Licciardos Restaurant in Mount Eliza Way, was open for 23 years). Will there be a third? “There will be, in some form or other,” he says. “I’m happy to entertain anything at this stage and I want to keep creating.” But, for now, this 60-year-old is taking time off to focus on two of his nonculinary passions - travelling and triathlons. All at Mt Eliza Village Magazine wish Rob, Christine and their family well.

Wherefore art thou coffee (cup)? BY LIZ ROGERS

Aussies love their coffee and they love their disposable coffee cups – to the tune of approximately one billion a year, making them the largest contributor to litter waste after plastic bottles. Yikes! So, what’s the answer? Recently at the Mt Eliza Farmers Market there was a small wooden shelf with coffee mugs on it and a sign encouraging people to grab one, fill it up and return it washed and ready for the next person. There’s talk of a Mount Eliza Village cup specifically designed for reuse. Pops Café in Ranelagh Drive accepts the bring-your-own-cup philosophy and Ad Hoc in Mount Eliza Way is happy to fill reusable cups. If you’re buying a coffee on the run, you can refuse a lid, choose a cup made from rapidly renewable resources or, better yet, bring a reusable one that you intend to wash yourself and that will fit in the café’s machine.

What a bearded beauty! BY LIZ ROGERS

Fancy the thought of sitting down with your feet up watching the telly with a bearded dragon perched on your shoulder? A bit cold and clammy? Scary? Spiky? Crikey! Peter Sorensen, from Mt Eliza Village Vet, and Spike have been best mates for 16 years. Bearded dragons are only meant to live for eight to 10, but Peter reckons it’s because Spike is living the high life. “He’s pretty spoilt. There’s a heat light and UVB tube (which assists in the production of vitamin D3 in reptiles and amphibians) in his terrarium. He has to keep warm because he’s cold-blooded. He eats fruits and vegies plus live crickets and insects because he needs to chase and hunt. I also ‘mist’ the enclosure so he can lick the droplets of water off the walls. Ph: 9708 8222

Bearded dragons are desert species, so they don’t need much.” Peter has always loved animals. He collected insects and skinks, green tree frogs and bluetongue lizards as a kid and worked part-time in a pet shop. He got Spike when he was at high school. “Bearded dragons lead a pretty sedentary life. We take him out at night and he just hangs with us watching television. He goes outside when the weather gets warm to sun on a basking rock. And no, lizards don’t get sunburnt.” I ask him what his wife, Libby, thought of having a lizard as a companion when they first met. “She was OK. A lizard was OK – but definitely no snakes.” And anyway, Spike is special - he waves! “He does this funny thing - he lifts up his front leg and waves at us.” What a beauty! Beard and all. For your Dental Health – EXPERIENCE MATTERS! Dr Scott Robertson has been a “fixture” in Mt Eliza for nearly 30 years. Dental Care Mt Eliza – Health Dentistry – is about longevity, beauty, health and function. It’s great to do Awesome Smiles – Balancing the Art and Science that Modern Dentistry has to offer, along with a depth of understanding that comes from a lifetime of Professional Dental Experience here in the same practice at Mt Eliza. “The Art of a Smile is Balance - and meeting the expectations that the patient has,” says Dr Scott Robertson. “Beautiful isn’t always Bright and White – it’s matching the personality to the Smile.” Leonardo Di Vinci’s golden proportions come into everything in nature, especially teeth and their position in space relative to the lips and gums which are the curtain of the Smile. Dr Scott Robertson combines the knowledge of aesthetics and the eye of an artist to accomplish the best outcomes for you. Advanced Orthodontics, Soft Tissue Laser and amazing Laboratory fabrications are the secrets of our success. The position of jaws and the underlying bony structures of the face can be altered with modern dental and orthodontic techniques, so it’s important to have a “Vision” for the outcome and a thorough understanding of the underlying neuromuscular function and mechanics of the orofacial structures.

Worn teeth, collapsed dentition and complicated 3D puzzles in the mouth and jaw are an important part of our practice. We would love to have the opportunity to discuss your unique dental and orofacial issues with you. We love to solve your dental problems. Your problems are just a solution waiting to happen!

of the jaw. This incredibly accurate system allows the team to design porcelain crowns, fillings or veneers that fit the patient’s prepared teeth in a single visit, rather than in two or three. It also replaces taking impressions (moulds), which is ideal for patients who find the process challenging. New teeth are made by a separate milling unit that cuts down porcelain blocks according to the design in less than 30 minutes! These porcelain blocks are strong and are enamel and shade compatible. This groundbreaking technology can also be used for making grinding splints, customfitted mouthguards and in their Smilefast cosmetic orthodontic treatment for adults, allowing simulation of the entire process to view potential results of having braces. Festival director Geoff Nyssen and his volunteer committee are working on securing a date in March next year to host the second MY Mt Eliza Run & Fun Festival. The successful inaugural event held on March 26 this year thrived on community spirit and celebrated the importance of family and friends having fun together. More than 1000 people came to the festival, with 680

64

Issue 40 • Spring/Summer 2017

people taking part in the 5km and 10km trail run/walk. While the festival’s primary goal was to engage the community in a day of family fun, more than $30,000 was raised for the cancer support organisation Myeloma Australia, which used the money to employ a part-time nurse to provide direct information and support services to myeloma patients, carers and their families.

“The MY Mount Eliza Run & Fun Festival 2018 will promote the importance of health and wellness in our community while raising awareness of the blood cancer multiple myeloma and much-needed funds for Myeloma Australia,” Geoff said. “We have been so well supported by our generous sponsors and community so we’re thrilled to bring this festival back for a second year Ph: 9708 8222

and will secure a date soon.” It takes a tremendous amount of effort to deliver this festival, so if you wish to support this event in 2018, please contact Geoff for a sponsorship prospectus at geoffnyssen@mymounteliza.org. au or 0423 838 374. You can also read more about Geoff’s personal journey with multiple myeloma at geoffnyssen.com

A CHAT WITH OUR FOOD, WINE & DINING EXPERTS Deon Jansen, Ad Hoc Mount Eliza, 1/84 Mt Eliza Way, Mount Eliza Tell us a little about your background? I spent two years working at a well-known Peninsula winery as head chef. Previously I was the head chef at the very well known Oxo Tower Brasserie in London for 16 years, where I learnt to cook food from many different countries. I love to cook with spice and mixing different textures in my dishes.

Why did you choose Mount Eliza? We loved the village feel to Mount Eliza; it seemed to have a strong community feel to MtElizaVillageMag

it. With great independent shops we knew it would be a good spot for a new café bistro to open. What’s on the menu right now that we should know about? Spring and summer are my favourite times of the year. Think fresh vibrant flavours, heritage tomatoes, local asparagus, broad beans and lots of cool salads. Check out our grilled spiced calamari with roasted tomato, shaved fennel salad, Mt Zero olives and rocket aioli; sweet corn zucchini fritters with crispy bacon, green pea feta smash, poached egg and kasundi relish; crispy pork belly with roasted candied peanuts, Asian slaw, sticky soy and Korean chili dressing;

and smoked salmon open herb omelette with heritage tomatoes, asparagus, goats’ curd and sourdough. What’s your most popular dish? Our most popular item is the avocado smash with daikon radish, hazelnut dukka, Red Hill goats’ curd, poached egg and micro herbs. What do you love to do on the Peninsula when not at work? I love to go riding my mountain bike up at Red Hill, and spending time on the beach and in my pool with family cooking a great barbecue is hard to beat! I just love the Peninsula. Pop & Selma’s Café on Ranelagh is the place to drop by as the weather finally works its ‘warm-me-up’ magic. Gather in groups out back in the private courtyard, which is ideal for mums and bubs, cosy up in couples inside or pull up a chair at one of the tables out front. Pop & Selma’s Café offers a wide range of speciality juices, including super cooling ice juice crushes that are full of summer flavours and are great for you too. Sip on a smoothie as music floats through the air every second Sunday, or sit back and have a drink in the afternoon sunshine – this café’s licensed. All-day breakfast with great coffee and vegan or vegetarian options are also available. This bustling little café is warm and welcoming while delivering on flavour, style and authenticity. Pop’s the word this spring. Just ask the locals. POP & SELMA’S CAFÉ A: 34 Ranelagh Drive, Mt Eliza

A school for Adventurous Minds At Woodleigh School, ‘Adventurous Minds’ defines who we are. Adventurous Minds never stop learning. To be adventurous is to have a go, to be creative, open to change and possibility. Adventurous Minds can be scientific, mathematic, artistic and expressive. There are no set limits. We are seekers of new perspectives. Our students are unafraid of failure, taking risks with their learning. They take setbacks in their stride, reflect and try again. They are capable, resourceful, collaborative and talented, always looking for innovative solutions. Our teachers and curriculum encourage students to try new things, to push beyond what is comfortable – to grow. The Activities and Camp Programs, Round Square and our Community Partnership Programs shift Woodleigh students’ perspectives beyond the safe confines of the Peninsula, to Ph: 9708 8222

national and international views. As industry and employer needs change, education too must evolve. We must acknowledge that the future will not be like the past. Transferable skills, application, effort, communication skills, curiosity, adaptability and innovation – adventurous thinking – these are fundamental for your child’s future success. They cannot be Googled. They can only be learnt through real, authentic, lived experiences. Education should be an adventure. The journeys students go on, both in and out of the classroom, should ignite a life-long love for learning. They should lead students to discover their passions and help define their values. At Woodleigh, Adventurous Minds are welcome. They are guided and empowered. Adventurous Minds are respected. Adventurous Minds are educated … here. JONATHAN WALTER, Principal
