RESTORE YOUR TREASURES AT GOUZLAN Gouzlan Group Jewellers in Mt Eliza is enjoying a steady growth in sales, repairs and remodelling. “Customers seek our advice regarding their old jewellery, Items that have been forgotten or abandoned for not being pretty any more” said Farid from Gouzlan Group. These may be inherited items with an attached sentimental value that have become clunky, unfashionable without artistic value or perhaps an unwanted memory from an ex, at Gouzlan they carefully sketch a unique new design, whether for a remodelling or a makeover. Farid invites you to come in, and not let these pieces just sit in drawers gathering dust. “Bring them to Gouzlan and you will be amazed with the quality of the work, the price and service you can trust”. says Farid Farid and his wife have just returned from an overseas business trip where they went to a number of countries. Their beautiful new stock is on offer in store now. Gouzlan Group Australia 76A Mt Eliza Way, Mt Eliza 0419 778 814 or 9787 0100 www.egyptianjewelleryaustralia.com.au

Springtime in the Village As we continue to enjoy the beautiful white blossom on the ornamental pear trees, the ‘village people’ have at last seen some sunshine and taken up their positions on the outdoor tables at our cafes and restaurants! Roll on summer.

Since the last publication the Village has welcomed The Beauty Emporium, BayLife Properties (rebranded from Ranelagh Realty) and most recently Hocking Stuart, who have taken over the property management side of Two Bay Real Estate. The Two Bays team remain the same and continue as normal with property sales. Sadly two great shops, Chipps and Style Temple, have closed while Blush has permanently relocated to share space in Yo Yo’s hair salon. In the next few months you are encouraged to join in the Halloween ‘Find the Pumpkin’ hunt around the shops, (details on a later page in this publication). The newsagency will be in full Halloween mode with an assortment of related products for sale and spot prizes for the best dressed up kids seen around the Village on 31st October! Mark your diaries with the key Mt Eliza Christmas dates. Carols on the Green will be held on Thursday 10th December starting at 7pm. Santa’s arrival, on his Samoyed dog sleigh, will be on Saturday morning the 12th December, arriving in Ritchies Centre at 10am and then will travel around the Village from 11am to 12pm. Don’t miss the parade!

Kids Haven Following an incident in the Village involving two young boys and an unpleasant, threatening man, many of the local business owners suggested that they would like to offer a safe place for kids to escape to in such situations. Simply a place to feel safe in any situation when they feel threatened or bullied either by adults or by other children. The Chamber of Commerce, the local business TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

No matter what the occasion, if you cant find the perfect gift around the Village but wish to keep it as a ‘local purchase’, buy a Mt Eliza Shopping Voucher. These can be redeemed in any local shop or restaurant and are available for purchase from Trish Stamp Travel and the gift shop, Ambyance, in Safeway Arcade. Keep the Village vibrant – Shop Local! association, has created a ‘Kids Haven’ sticker and these have been placed on shop windows throughout the Village. The primary schools have been asked to educate the students on what this ‘Kids Haven’ sticker means and to assure them that if they feel intimidated at all, they should run into any business displaying one of these signs and will be cared for. Please tell your kids about this scheme and point out for the stickers as you go shopping. It’s all about the community. Shop local!

SPRING ART SHOW Springtime is show time for the Peninsula Arts Society who will be holding their 61st Spring Art Exhibition over the Melbourne Cup Weekend. The exhibition will showcase the paintings of its many talented members and tutors. View and purchase original and highly collectable artworks at affordable prices. Shires continue to advocate for a future port at Hastings, deploying all our resources to ensure that the Port of Melbourne’s lease agreement doesn’t contain anti-competitive clauses. And, we continue to work with the City of Frankston to find out just what the future of the Stony Point railway – with possible electrification of the line to Baxter – will look like. In Briars Ward, councillors have been working with state and federal MPs David Morris and Bruce Billson and community groups in an attempt to improve safety along the busy school zone of Nepean Highway. With four schools in the immediate vicinity and the busiest intersections in Mount Eliza, local traffic issues are no secret, and the number of kids using our roads in one way or another to get to and from school demand action. With some external funding and a bit of luck, we should be able to develop the small gravel car park opposite

Eden Gardens, and with some signalling changes, create a safe environment for active transport. Over at Emil Madsen reserve, preliminary surveys for the development of two new soccer pitches and a fourth oval uncovered significant indigenous midden sites. While this mean we couldn’t move ahead with earthwork, the project has now been redesigned to incorporate a culturally significant heritage site – a fantastic development for the local clubs and aboriginal affairs. This will be the first such example on the Peninsula, with work due to start next year. For details on the many other projects happening on the Peninsula or in your ward, go to the Shire’s website at www. mornpen.vic.gov.au. Cr. Andrew Dixon Briars Ward – with Bev Colomb and Anne Shaw

MICHAEL JACKSON’S HISTORY - GHOSTS catalogues are available at the door for $2. About 300 artworks will be on show and the public can vote for their favourite painting, for the People’s Choice Award. The event will run from October 31 until November 3, 10am5pm daily, at 159 Overport Road Frankston. www.peninsulaartssociety. org.au

From beginning to end you will be left amazed at the way over 30 of Michael’s biggest hits are played as they are stripped back, rearranged and re-created to give you an experience like no other. Listen to the beautiful tones of songs like Earth Song and Give in to Me, and experience hits like Thriller, Beat It, Smooth Criminal, Billie Jean and many more in a way that not even Michael himself ever did. Mt Eliza Pre-School exceeds national standards Mt Eliza Pre-School has been rated as ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’ under the National Quality Framework (NQF). The National Quality Standard (NQS) sets a national benchmark for the quality of children’s education and care services across Australia. As the NQF progresses, every service in the country will be assessed on its progress in meeting the quality standard. Services receive a rating for each of the seven quality areas in the NQS, as well as an overall rating. An overall ‘Exceeding National Quality Standard’ rating is given to services that have four or more quality areas rated Exceeding, including in two of the key quality areas. “The Staff and Committee at Mt Eliza Pre-School have worked hard to earn an ‘Exceeding’

rating across all seven of the quality areas and we are proud of the service we offer to our pre-school community,” says Nicole Kuc, committee of management secretary at Mt Eliza Pre-School. “In particular we were commended for our educational program, our wonderful indoor and outdoor play areas and the friendly and respectful relationships with children, staff, committee and the entire pre-school community. “We would like to acknowledge all of the past committee members, staff and families who have contributed so much to the pre-school over the years”. The NQF is guided by the Australian Children’s Education and Care Quality Authority (ACECQA). These talented Mt Martha locals work hard at their sport, training six hours per week with professional talent developer Steve Foot from Mt Eliza Tennis Club and hitting the ball in their backyard court for another four. They are ranked number one for their age group in Victoria respectively, and Zahra has fifth ranking nationally. The twin’s commitment to excelling while enjoying all aspects of the game has resulted in some impressive results. They’ve just won Tennis Victoria’s statewide run Frank Sedgmen Cup held in August in Traralgon and played in the Super 10’s Tennis Australia Victorian Nationals team (four boys and four girls) during the Australian Open Ph: 9708 8222

this year. There is also a sponsorship deal with Wilson Tennis after winning Tennis Victoria’s Wayne Arthurs Cup 2014. “Our kids really enjoy sport. “They run five kilometres with us each morning and they’re always on the court,” says father Nick. Holidays are spent playing tennis tournaments and Saturday mornings are dedicated to serious competition. Zahra is set to advance to the open age competition next year as she’s already playing in the Loretta Thrupp, which is the highest competition for up to 18 year olds. Training in Florida is also on the agenda. “The kids will know how far they want to go,” continues Nick, and by the sounds of it, that will be a long long way. Watch this space.

Mt Eliza is buzzing with the news it will soon have its very own music festival, showcasing a huge range of talent from right here and across Melbourne. The exciting one-day event, to be held in the village centre on Saturday February 6, 2016, will be a celebration of all genres featuring a variety of DJs and bands, performing in venues during the day with a small stage in the village centre. There will also be buskers, stiltwalkers, face painters and a silent disco. Come nightfall and you will find more live music performances at a number of local restaurants and licensed venues in town. Tim Meyer, who is organising the inaugural festival with a small group of volunteers and ongoing assistance from Alison Doherty and the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce, said he was surprised at how quickly the event got off the ground after he initially posted the idea on a Mt Eliza community TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

Facebook page. “Everyone in town was up for it and people have been very supportive,” he said. “The chamber of commerce got right behind it and helped get venues onboard, so we’re incredibly grateful for their support.” Tim, a Mt Eliza resident, is in the music industry himself, running Melbourne-based company Cobraskin, an artist marketing agency that works with emerging music producers and DJs. While still in the early planning stages, the Mt Eliza Music Festival has already had a number of talented musicians sign on. There will also be multicultural performers, youth bands and a Boho Blends DJ booth. Stay tuned for more exciting announcements in the coming months!

Preparing for a smart future

Exciting things are happening at Toorak College It is leading the way in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) for girls with a new curriculum based on ‘hands on’ learning where students work together to tackle real life problems using technology, design, engineering and coding. Principal Helen Carmody confirms, “Toorak College is currently the only school on the Mornington Peninsula offering specialised courses in robotics and computer coding for girls in the Middle Years. Our girls are designing, building and programing Lego robots in Years 5 and 6 and progressing to gaming and coding technology in Year 7. They can design using CAD software and produce prototype new products using a 3D printer.” To support STEM thinking a specially created space called DIGI Zone

has been developed to create, tinker, collaborate, problem find and solve and communicate. This space has been created in anticipation of the School’s future Centre for Science and Innovation. Recently Year 2 students enjoyed using the CAD 3D and Circuitry for Kids resources within the new DIGI Zone, and through a process of design and construction they created ‘futuristic vehicles’ for the year 2050. “Toorak College provides broad and diverse opportunities for all our students”, explains Mrs Carmody. “We have individuals and groups who excel in English, Maths, Art, Music and Drama, while continuing to be the only school on the Peninsula providing elite sporting pathways for girls through Girls Sport Victoria (GSV).” Visit Toorak College at Open Morning on Wednesday 14 October from 9am. NEWSAGENCY

Winds of change

Lynn and Hans van Bloemendaal have seen a lot of change in the Village over their fifteen years of newsagency operation. There has also been a huge transformation in the industry due to the digital age, but these hard working locals have adapted as a result of innovative thinking and consistent delivery of first class service. Lynn explains; ‘We’ve had to develop new ways of expanding in direct response to on-line media. We provide newspapers and magazines because people still want to sit down with a cup of coffee and a paper (especially on the weekend), but we also offer parcel services and tatts lotto products including syndicates. Internet access is also available in the shop plus a put away (reserve of magazines) and home delivery service.’ TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

The Mt Eliza News Agency parcel service which is delivered through Fast Away and Toll – think express domestic freight – is a convenient, safe and reliable. Lynn continues, ‘You’ll find all the newsagency staples in store, plus a few things you wouldn’t expect. Stationery, project paper, Derwent pencils, books and toys are available. 2016 diaries and calendars have arrived and if a customer requests something we don’t have we do our best to get it’, says Lynn. They even sourced a hard to get international magazine for a client by having an acquaintance pick up a copy while overseas. Now that’s service with a capital S! Bikes in Trees… what the??

If you have wandered through Mt Eliza Village Green in recent weeks you will do doubt have noticed the brightly painted bikes hanging in the trees! This, together with the raised garden bed that has been installed along the fence line, is the outcome of a 6 month project undertaken by year 11 VCAL students from Mt Eliza Secondary College. Back in March, teachers approached the Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce asking for suggestions of a low cost, local landscaping project as a practical project for the VCAL students to learn real life skills. The Village Green was suggested and during site meetings with the students, small sections of the Green were identified, where landscaping would not impact on events such as the Farmers Market and Carols night. The students devised a landscape plan, to include the planting of Banksia’s – the school emblem, installing a raised planter and then came up with the idea to use bikes to hold pots of colourful, low maintenance plants. The practicality of making this project happen in the time frame involved several groups and individuals. TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

School teacher Bree Hudson got the students on target and was ably assisted on a weekly basis by Mornington Peninsula Council staff member Laura Crilly, who drove the logistics of the project and coordinated with the necessary Council departments. Council also provided maintenance staff to teach the students the necessary skills to build the raised planter beds and prepare the soil for planting. The training organisation called Advance, facilitated getting the students and the rusty old bikes to the Mens Shed in Mornington, where the fabulous, retired gentlemen, mentored the students in skills around stripping back the bikes to remove rust, welding and painting. Funds for the purchase and installation of the water fountain have been provided jointly by Mt Eliza Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club and Lions Club. Now it’s up to the community to call past the park and grab one of brightly coloured watering cans and water the plants in both the bikes and in the planter boxes. Please support the students work. with Dr Scott Robertson @ Dental Care Mt Eliza I find patients present to me often asking me for “brand named” dentistry such as Allon4, Lumineers or Invisalign. People now have access to so much information, available on the internet, or have heard of dental treatments from some pretty slick marketing campaigns, so often brand names are what patients come in asking for – which of course is the intention of the product sellers. Whilst these branded treatments may in themselves be very good. I believe my job as a professional and as a dentist in the community for over 25 years, is to help unravel the often confusing and sometimes “inappropriate” options that our patients come in asking for. My responsibility is to diagnose the problem and obtain an understanding of the outcome required and match the options available to the desires of the patient. Balancing the treatment choices with the individual and appropriateness for their care is Ph: 9708 8222

one of the most satisfying parts of my Job. Carrying out planned treatments smoothly and comfortably and seeing the appreciative smile from a patient confirms to me that our dental care is well done! Often my patients are relieved to find the best choice for them is not the most expensive or dramatic! Its Springtime. Time to smile! Are you concerned about your smile? Do you look in the mirror and wonder if your teeth could be straighter or more appealing? Do you have problems with your bite and wonder if you would benefit from orthodontic treatment? Concerned about wearing braces? We at Hanks Orthodontics are here for you. We can advise on whether orthodontic treatment would be of benefit and work closely with your dentist to make sure you get the smile you have always dreamed of. We take time to discuss with you different types of braces that are aesthetic, and move teeth in a

gentle way. If you have always been curious as to how your smile would benefit from orthodontic treatment. Dr. Hanks and the team at Hanks Orthodontics don’t want you to wonder anymore. Straight teeth and a great smile have the ability your impact your social life, career and your self confidence. What better time to than Springtime to take your first step towards feeling better about yourself? “Orthodontics and Sports” It’s springtime and again time to remind our patients at Hanks Orthodontics to protect their

faces and teeth while playing sports. If you are participating in sports, it’s important to have a proper-fitting mouth guard. Mouth guards can prevent chipped or broken teeth, lip and cheek injuries. If you are wearing fixed appliances, please remember DO NOT use a regular mouth guard or mouth guards that are softened in warm water and moulded to the teeth). Dr. Hanks recommends using a mouth guard that is fixed braces friendly, which it should say it on the box, or you can buy one from our office. Having a mouth guard can make the difference between losing

your teeth or not, and because many of our patients who play high school sports have jaws that are still growing, last year’s mouth guard may no longer fit as it should. Please feel free to ask Dr. Hanks and his staff any questions you have regarding mouth guards. Enjoy the sports and Springtime! Regards Dr. Paul Hanks and everyone at Team Hanks Orthodontics. Let’s Bowl

Mt Eliza Bowling Club has come a long way from the days when the length of the ladies skirt was measured before they could go out on the greens and hats were compulsory and couldn’t be taken off unless the Lady President had removed her hat first! Today it’s casual clothes, caps, fluorescent bowls, bare feet and fun and laughter all around. Cheeky commentary and friendly banter are all part of the social scene now known as Barefoot Bowls. Over the winter period the Mt Eliza Bowling Club installed new synthetic greens and floodlights which provide a wonderful TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

opportunity for the Club to offer Barefoot Bowls under lights in the summer months and to casual visitors and social members alike. Bruce Billson MP opened the greens and the Gregson Family together with Club Champions put on a demonstration match under lights. With ages ranging from 7 to 70 plus, the Gregson family (above right) are renowned for their bowling prowess, grandfather John, a past Club Champion, introduced Dylan Fisher, (21) to bowls at the age of 10 and Dylan now represents Australia. Dylan’s brother, Jett Simmons,

already has a Championship trophy at age 7, and Jett’s Dad Todd Simmons, has played over 300 games for Victoria. The Gregson family game highlighted what an inclusive game bowls has become, suitable for people of all ages and abilities. The Mt Eliza Club Barefoot Bowls programme commences on Friday 6th November and will run each Friday from 6.00pm. No prior skills necessary come have a roll up, enjoy a drink, grab something to eat, and be part of the fun. For more information contact Mandy on 0408 344 701.

Six months makes a difference @ Healthy Smiles in Mt Eliza Dr Petunia Jacob from Healthy Smiles in Mt Eliza knows that bi-annual dental checks (including cleaning) help maintain optimum oral health, and it seems the idea is catching. This family first dentist is finding that her clients are happily converting to the good oral health way of life by committing to regular check-ups because they are reaping the health rewards. Medical studies have proven that the bacteria that affect your teeth end up affecting your over-all health - especially the heart and joints. This is why Dr Petunia Jacob insists on making her clients aware of what is going on inside their mouths and how dental hygiene is paramount to optimum health. She prefers to inform her clients of what is happening to their teeth in relation to the types of food they eat and choices they make, and then suggests lifestyle alterations to help rectify any problems. Healthy smiles @ Mt Eliza is a family owned and operated business. This fully accredited by ‘Quality in Practice’ dental

Tony’s daughter and Restaurant Manager, Mireille together with Isabella serve their guests with a smile! “we are excited to introduce more seafood items on the menu over summer, still including the more popular specials each week”, says Mireille. The restaurant’s speciality is hand made pasta combined with home style Italian provincial dishes. However, if you’re looking for a nice eye fillet or pork dish, these are offered as well. He covers all tastes. He has a fabulous selection of imported and local red and white wines to accompany each meal, however you can BYO if you wish.

Owner Steve explains: ’We are at the markets five days a week’ (they’ve got three trucks and three vans) ‘so you know our produce is fresh, and because we are a family operated hands on business’ - Albert, Steve’s father, still keeps an eye on things four mornings a week along with brother in law Joe Sinopoli who manages the store, ‘reliability and commitment to our clients comes easily.’ So now’s the time to come in-store for all your fresh produce including a wide range of beautiful flowers (exotic and garden varieties) to add a bit of colour to your home this spring, because fresh is always best at Palamara Village Fruits. MOUNT ELIZA FARMERS’ MARKET It never ceases to amaze me how our market has evolved into such a community event. People seem to come along for not only their shopping but also their monthly catch up with neighbours and friends. Social chats, buskers in the street, dogs being walked, delicious tastings and quality shopping, add in a great coffee from one of the local cafes or a freshly squeezed juice from the fruit shop, to realise why the market has become an integral part of our village life. There is a media debate at the moment on the use of the words ‘Farmers Market’ and what defines a genuine farmers’ market and why some only some markets, like Mt Eliza’s, have gained accreditation from the Victorian Farmers’ Market Association. The basic principal is that the product, must be from a family farm, and generally is being sold at the stall by the person who grew it, or one of their family. Absolutely no reselling of produce is permitted. It is this aspect which Ph: 9708 8222

is frequently abused at non accredited, so called ‘Farmers’ Markets’. The only two markets on the peninsula that meet all the VFMA standards, are Mt Eliza and the Saturday Mornington Market. The benefits to you are that you know where your produce comes from and you can meet the people who grow it and know it. The produce is fresher as it is brought to you directly from the farm and can be therefore more flavoursome, has had less processing and no packaging. Not all produce is organic, that’s not an essential. I will leave you with an interesting quote from Mary Jane Butler who is an organic farmer; “I want to call my organic carrots ‘carrots’ and let the other farmers call theirs a ‘chemical carrot’ and then they can list all the chemicals they have used, instead of me having to be certified, with the burden being on us to prove something.” Food for thought! Enjoy shopping. Alison Doherty Market Manager.

Mt Eliza’s Little Italy

If you’re looking for an Italian experience then look no further than La Veneta in Mt Eliza. This contemporary cucina screams all things green, white and red and offers an ambiance that is reminiscent of your favourite Italian holiday (or the one you will be taking with Annette in the near future, but we’ll get into that later!) Annette Went-Panozzo knows her stuff. Her two chefs follow her family recipes plus rework modern methods to create satisfying and tasty Italian fare. Think classic Venetian meals like sweet and sour sardines with polenta, traditional meatballs and the very popular mushrooms stuffed with goat’s cheese, truffle fries and home-made arancini. Delizioso! ‘We are extending our hours over summer’, says Annette. ‘Our function room upstairs caters for up to fifty and downstairs our bi-folds open out so the aroma of Italy can TheVillageMtElizaMagazine

spill out on to the street. You can enjoy a pre-dinner drink with tapas from four pm onwards or dine al fresco ‘til late. Everything is made in house from scratch.’ Special boards rotate regularly and gluten free meals are available, plus there’s gourmet pizza all day every day. Born in Australia from Italian parents Annette’s food is as Italian as Italian can get and so are the all- inclusive tours she conducts to Italy in conjunction with Canadian Bay Travel. ‘I take up to twelve people throughout Italy each tour. We go to places you won’t be seeing on those big bus trips.’ All tours are organised through Canadian Bay Travel. Just give them a call on 9787 9477 or pop into La Veneta to get the travel bug taste!
