Baha mix a classic
Blairgowrie based audio engineer Chris Hallam has purchased a classic vintage mixing console and installed it at Baha in Rye. Ready to light up and record whatever acts might grace the Baha stage. Now fully refurbished, a four-year project for the original builder, electronic ‘genius’ Alan Jenkins who happens to live in Pearcedale. The twelve channel Audek desk was built in 1968, in-house, for the former Rambler recording studio in Mt Eliza which was owned by Arthur Lewis. At that time there were no mass manufacturers of mixing desks, virtually all were custom built by hand. “Australian Crawl and John Farnham have recorded demos through it,” Chris said. The desk has a ‘softer’, old-school sound. “The design incorporates transformers that act as a ‘sonic airbag’. Which means that when the signal is at its sweet spot, in terms of gain, it actually adds a harmonic distortion that makes the recording more musical,”
said Chris. “A fuller bass sound and a silkier, smoother top end and a better quality recording overall,” he added. “The desk is a more musical way to record through to digital, it’s a clean, world class sound,” Chris said. “But passion is more important than perfection. I’m not trying to emulate a recording studio’s perfect sound, my main aim is to capture the passion,” said Chris who often records drums with three microphones, as did Led Zeppelin. A console aficionado, Chris also owned the state of the art Amek analogue mixing desk, formerly in Melbourne’s Hamer Hall. So far at Baha, Chris has recorded Sticky Fingers, Transvaal Diamond and The Brad Martin Project. Elsewhere he has recorded a long list of Aussie blues royalty including Chain, Kevin Borich and Jeff Lang. Missy Higgins’ producer Butterfly has also recorded with Chris. Mornington Bay Run - What a success! What a success, with over $25,000 raised for the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation!!! It was fantastic to see so many people getting out, getting active and giving it a go – and all in the middle of winter! The 8th Annual Mornington Bay Run was held on Sunday July 28, it was a brisk July morning, and we were thankful that the rain held off until after the event. The Mornington Bay Run exceeded expectations achieving a record turnout of over 700 participants, we would like to thank all of the participants, sponsors and volunteers who helped make the event a great success. It was great to hear that all the participants were supporting each other throughout the race, providing encouragement to those who needed the extra little push to get up the hill – some of whom were running up Beleura hill for the second time that morning. Madeline Lucas who came first in the 8.24km female division said “I love encouraging people along and giving them that spark to go that bit faster! Approaching the hill for a second time one of the guys at the front of the pack had stopped and started to walk. I tapped him on the shoulder as I ran past and told him to keep moving! He got going and we spurred each other on up the hill.” We would like to congratulate all participants and place getters from each category who successfully completed this scenic and challenging course. Visit www. morningtonbayrun.com.au for images and race times. We would also like to thank everyone who participated in SEPTEMBER 2013 (22)
fundraising for the event or sponsored a friend or family member, without your support we would not have the privilege of donating such an incredible amount of money to the Peter MacCallum Cancer Foundation. A special mention goes to ‘The Grand Team’ who raised $4,022 and won the fundraising prize, the team decided that they would like to donate the 6 Burner BBQ prize to the highest individual fundraiser Joanne Quarrell who raised $2,608 an absolutely astounding effort – well done!! The Mornington Bay Run is to be held on Sunday July 27, 2014 keep an eye on www.morningtonbayrun.com. au for updates, we look forward to an event bigger and better event in 2014!
